Commentary

Dear SPJST Members,

I hope this message finds you well. As we embark on another year filled with opportunities and adventures, I am thrilled to share some exciting updates and opportunities within our SPJST fraternal life insurance family.

Discounted Traveling to Czechia and More!

Several board members, officers, and I recently had the pleasure of taking advantage of one of the many SPJST member benefits – discounted traveling to Czechia. What an amazing trip it was! The SPJST staff has organized several more trips for 2024 and beyond including some thrilling bus excursions. I encourage each of you to explore these opportunities and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Perkspot: Unlocking Great Deals

I also want to highlight the incredible benefits of Perkspot. Many of us have successfully used Perkspot for discounted Vegas shows, as well as the purchase of smart phones and tablets. The savings are substantial, and I encourage all members to explore the multitude of great deals available through this platform.

Welcoming Dignitaries and Foreign Delegates

It was an honor to welcome foreign delegates to Houston alongside Houston’s Mayor Whitmire and Texas Czech Consul General/SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. Their presence at the Czech Center Museum Houston was a testament to the international camaraderie fostered by SPJST.

Vibrant Activities at Lodge 88 Houston

Lodge 88, Houston continues to buzz with activities for everyone, ranging from poker and ladies’ nights to campouts, game watching parties, bingo, and dances. The variety of events ensures that there’s something for every member almost every night.

Upcoming Events and Fundraisers

Lodge 142, Houston will be hosting a meeting followed by an exciting bingo session with great prizes.

Lodge 81, Needville is organizing a dueling piano fundraiser on February 2.

Financial Prosperity in 2023

I am delighted to report that 2023 was a financially successful year for SPJST. We were able to add to our surplus and increase sales – thanks to the hard work and dedication of our District Five agents. Your commitment to SPJST has truly made a difference.

Camp Kubena and New Profitable Initiatives

Camp Kubena remains a focal point for us, and we continue to explore new ideas to make it a profitable venture. Your suggestions and input are invaluable as we work towards this common goal.

Convention 2024 in Temple

As we look ahead, Convention 2024 is on the horizon in June, set to take place in Temple. I am excited to meet fellow members from across Texas and anticipate an educational and inspiring event for all.

Spread the Word: SPJST Beyond Life Insurance

As Texas continues to grow, let us collectively spread the good word about SPJST and its offerings. Highlight the high annuity rates that SPJST provides and emphasize that we are more than just a life insurance provider.

Thank you for being a valued member of the SPJST family. Let us embrace the opportunities ahead and continue to strengthen our bonds as a community.

Fraternally,

Scenes from SPJST Family Fun Day in Austin

SPJST hosted a Family Fun Day on Saturday, March 23, 2024, in Austin, Texas. Members met at the Bullock Texas State History Museum where they toured three flours of galleries and exhibits. Members took a break to enjoy lunch in The Star Cafe at the Museum. Later in the afternoon, members walked to the Texas State Capitol and viewed the monuments on the Capitol Grounds. Inside the Capitol, members visited several areas including the Senate and House Chambers and Supreme Court Courtroom.

Is Your Life Insurance Policy Going To Be Unclaimed

E

very year, millions of dollars in life insurance benefits go unclaimed. In Texas, the Comptroller’s office is tasked with returning unclaimed property to its rightful owners. Since 2011, contract auditors working on behalf of the Comptroller’s Unclaimed Property Division have identified more than $178 million in unpaid insurance benefits owed to Texans. That's a significant sum meant to protect your family but is currently not fulfilling its purpose.

There are numerous reasons why life insurance goes unclaimed. Often, nobody knows the policy exists, or if they do, they may not know the details. Almost all of these scenarios can be prevented with a few simple steps.

1. Don’t keep it a secret.

Life insurance is meant to benefit someone, but if nobody knows it exists, it serves no purpose. Ensure that at least three people are aware of your policy: one beneficiary, one family member (not residing in the same household), and a close friend or neighbor. The latter is particularly crucial; in the event of your passing, they can provide clarity and assistance to your grieving family.

2. Don’t hide the information.

Keep your policy details somewhere easily accessible. Write them down in a notebook or on a notepad and store them in a secure but known location, whether it's a drawer, safe, cabinet, or elsewhere. Each person aware of your policy should know where this information is kept.

3. Inform beneficiaries.

If you’ve purchased a policy for someone, make sure they know about it. Many cases involve adults passing away suddenly without informing their chil-

dren about existing policies. Educate your loved ones about the importance of life insurance as soon as they can comprehend it. Waiting until they turn 18 or until a significant event is not advisable. The sooner they understand, the better prepared they’ll be.

I used my kids’ teenage years to teach them about the importance of life insurance and their policies so they would know what to when it was time for them to take it over (either by my premature death or they turned of age).

4. Document your plans.

Keep a written record of your wishes and vital information alongside your policy certificate. This will not only facilitate access to life insurance details but also provide guidance for funeral planning and other arrangements. SPJST offers a booklet called “The Plan . . . For a Peaceful Tomorrow,” which allows you to document all necessary information, including life and other insurance, instructions for memorial services, your obituary, your thoughts, vital documents, persons to notify, and much more. To receive a copy of this booklet, contact your agent, territory manager, or the SPJST Home Office. We will be glad to provide the booklet to you free of charge.

Additionally, the NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) website provides a life insurance lookup service for recent deceased individuals.

Remember, you invest in life insurance to secure your family's future. Don't let your hard-earned money end up as unclaimed funds. Simple steps can prevent this from happening.

Stay blessed,

THE LEGEND OF THE INDIAN PAINTBRUSH

I was not old enough to know what the Texas landscape looked like before Lady Bird Johnson came along. Today, there are so many roads, cities, and Bucee’s gas stations around, it’s hard to image what it must have looked like in the 60s and 70s. But my parents certainly did, and I know many of our SPJST members do as well. When my parents were kids in the North Texas area, they would take long drives through the country and do a lot of camping. Sometimes they wouldn’t even see another car for hours while driving. That’s not the Texas my kids and I know today. What I do remember was my grandmother reading to me the book, Old Man’s Garden by Annora Brown, specifically about the Indian Paintbrush.

The legend goes that once upon a time, a young Blackfoot girl fell in love with a wounded prisoner she was helping. The young girl realized that her tribe was only nursing the prisoner to only torture him later. She planned an escape of the prisoner and went with him for fear of the punishment. After some time in her lover’s camp, she grew homesick for a glimpse of her old camp. She finally went to the site of her old camp, hid in the nearby bushes, and overheard two young braves discussing what would happen to the young girl who betrayed them, if only they could find her. Knowing she could never return, she took a

piece of bark and drew a picture of the camp upon it with her own blood, gashing her leg and painting with a stick. After drawing the picture, the young girl threw the stick away and returned to her lover’s camp. At the location, where the stick landed, a little plant grew with a bush-like end, dyed with the blood of this girl, which became the first Indian Paintbrush.

Facts

• The Indian Paintbrush is a native perennial, annual, or biennial herb (depending on the species) of North America.

• Latin Name: Castilleja Miniata

brushes. Delphine, my dog and best friend, and I love to take walks in the Indian paintbrush fields.

Recently, I had the privilege of visiting the LBJ Presidential Library on the campus of The University of North Texas in Austin. I learned so much about our country and our wonderful state of Texas. What really caught my attention was Lady Bird Johnson. In 1969, five years before I was born, Lady Bird Johnson started handing out the Texas Highway Beautification Awards and writing personal checks to the winners. Throughout the state, Texans started planting bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes in the hopes of winning her approval. Driving out to see the wildflowers bloom was

• Other Names: Grandmother’s Hair, Common Red Paintbrush, Butterfly Weed, Prairie Fire, Painted Cup, Painted Lady

• Family: Scrophulariaceae or Figwort Family

• The paintbrush was macerated in grease by the Indians and used as hair oil to invigorate the hair and make it glossy. This effect was probably due to the selenium content.

• Indian paintbrushes were also used to make a red dye.

I wrote in the Camp Kubena song, “Where the wildflowers fill my soul,” and they do exactly that. I am fortunate to have the privilege to manage the 182 acres of Camp Kubena. During the spring, I get to look out my office window and see fields of beautiful Indian paintbrushes. You see so many fields of bluebonnets and paintbrushes mixed in, but Camp Kubena is the only place I have seen a field of mostly Indian paint-

something my parents did with us every spring. Recently, I was just on vacation in Northern California and accidentally came across the Lady Bird Johnson Grove. I had to go check this out. Those giant ancient redwoods with all of the sword ferns reminded me about how far away I was from Texas, but that Mrs. Johnson’s spirit is alive and well here, too. This grove spoke to me that she had something grander in mind than just pretty flowers. Lady Bird was known for saying, “I want Vermont to look like Vermont, and Texas to look like Texas.” It was then, I realized, that her touch was felt across the country.

I saw this quote from Lady Bird Johnson, “Some may wonder why I chose wildflowers when there are hunger and unemployment and the big bomb in the world.” I thought of Texas, and I thought of Camp Kubena and the land supported by our members. Camp is not just a feeling, but the very ground beneath our feet and toes. Lady Bird wanted each state to value and protect its wildflowers and trees because, as she said, “It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become.” That’s how I feel about Camp Kubena. And next spring, when the wildflowers bloom, maybe it could become a new tradition for our members to make the trip out to camp for a family portrait with Lady Bird Johnson’s Indian paintbrushes.

Their group is responsible for a series of violent acts, the investigation of which is entrusted to State Security Captain Koller (Stefan Konarske). The Mašíns become the most wanted men in the country. They attempt to escape to West Berlin, where they plan to join the American army in order to liberate Czechoslovakia. The search for the five resistance members continues in East Germany, where one of the largest manhunts in modern history begins. Photos sought of rural East Bell County schools

The foundation of saved rural school photos of East Bell County started many years ago with people who attended these schools donating school photos they had to the Seaton Community Improvement Association (based in Seaton School). There has been a renewed interest in locating, scanning, and labeling these old-school photos in the past few years. Each of the scanned photos in the present collection has all students numbered, and many are identified even dating back to the late 1890s. All of the school photos stored in albums at Seaton School have been scanned, labeled, numbered, and names listed when known.

At present, we have a little over 200 photos with examples showing several with the names of all the students (students are numbered for easy identification), the name of the school, and the year the photo was taken.

We need the assistance of anyone who may have photos from these schools. Please take a few minutes to look through your albums/boxes of old photos, and if any of them are from the rural schools of East Bell County, either scan them at 200% at home, have someone scan them for you, then email the scanned photos to Richard Lesikar (rlesikar@icloud.com) for inclusion in the book. The Staples store in Temple will scan your photos (for a fee), and Staples will email the scanned photos to Richard at no additional cost. You will need to leave your photo(s) with Staples, then come back when they have completed the scanning. You need to call Richard to advise him you have left photo(s) at Staples and he will coordinate with them. If there are names

written on back of photo, it, too, will need to be scanned.

It’s possible we already have the photo in our collection; however, your copy might be of better quality and may have the names of students either written on the front or back of the photo. Once we receive the scanned copy, we will do the labeling/numbering, etc., and then incorporate it into the group to be published in February 2025.

All proceeds from the book sale will be donated to the Seaton Community Improvement Association.

For those reading this article who had family attend these rural schools of East Bell County, and as we get up in age, photos that have been saved by older generations are sometimes not as important because the people who inherit the photos do not know or recognize anyone in the photos. Often, these old photos are simply put into the trash! Should you have older relatives who are downsizing or have passed on, please consider putting all these old photos in a box and mailing them to Richard Lesikar. If that is not possible, you can call Richard and he will come to your home to pick up your photos at your convenience. If you have Czech ancestry, the Czech settlers of Bell County in the early years (1880s to 1980s) were a pretty tight-knit group sharing photos of their friends and relatives. If you have photos you will be mailing, write a note of the name of the family that had possession of the photos.

Thank you for any assistance, information, and photos you can share.

Prague author visits Czech museum discusses historical novel

Occasionally singing and accompanying herself on the guitar, Barbara Ortwein of Prague, Czech Republic, talked about her novel, “A Summer in Spillville in 1893,” on Saturday at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, 119 West French Avenue.

Told from the viewpoint of one of his daughters, the tale follows the journey of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak to a farm community in Iowa. It tells about his family’s experiences in New York, a summer train trip, and how Dvorak became inspired by the American people, including those who came from his homeland. These experiences, she said, led to the creation of the Symphony No. 9 and other works by the Czech composer.

Alice Vickers, her assistant, said they were both teachers when they met in 2020.

“I was teaching Spanish in high school,” Vickers said. “She needed another teacher who could go to Europe. It was a learning experience.”

cult part for him was the soft movement at the end of the piece. He wanted it to be performed at the world exposition later that year in Chicago, she said, but that didn’t work out. It was eventually performed, however, in New York City.

Ortwein will be in Texas for about a month. She was in Rockne on March 27, Needville on April 6, and will be in Bellville on April 10.

Central Texas students visit Czech Heritage Museum in Temple

Ortwein has written three historical novels. In these, Vickers said, she tells the story of a family that emigrates from Germany to Texas. Her fictional characters interact with historical people, including many actual immigrants in the history of the German, Czech and Polish settlements in Texas.

She described Ortwein as something of a virtuoso, who used to write musical plays, designing the costumes and even writing the score for every instrument in the orchestra.

“She speaks seven languages and has been to every continent except Antarctica,” she said.

Ortwein picked up Divorak’s tale with him and his wife and two of their children near Times Square in 1892. On the trip across the Atlantic, they met a man who invited them to visit his family in Iowa.

At this point, Ortwein took her guitar and sang about a young man who was longing for his home back in Bohemia.

Divorak is supposed to have asked his wife: “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a place right here in the U.S. like home?”

Her answer: “What are you thinking? The children are still too young.”

One of the children asked: “Why does my father want to stay in America for the summer?”

Ortwein then played a recording from the symphony that the summer trip inspired.

Divorak continued to work on the symphony, she said, and the most diffi-

powerful leadership tool you have is your own personal example.”

Youth advocacy, too, has always been one of Donnie’s defining character traits – as it applied to his work within the SPJST and as it applied to his career as an educator, school administrator and coach. Throughout his SPJST years, Donnie with the kind and generous support of his family -- have helped to make the SPJST Youth Program a memorable and meaningful experience for hundreds of boys and girls. He’s done it in so many ways – from using his strong voice in board meetings to launch and support various youth initiatives to encouraging the youth in their scholastic and extracurricular activities, to supporting SPJST youth in their fair and livestock show participation, to something as simple and enjoyable as grilling

burgers at every SPJST summer camp session.

Additionally, Donnie serves as President of SPJST Senior Living, a growing enterprise which today consists of SPJST Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation in Taylor; SPJST Assisted Living in Taylor; SPJST Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation in Needville; SPJST Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation in El Campo; and SPJST Assisted Living in Lake Travis. And under his watchful eye, the Senior Living facility in Taylor is currently undertaking the construction of 120 apartments for an assisted living facility and a 32-apartment assisted living memory care facility on the Taylor campus.

Donnie is also a member of several Czech heritage organizations, including the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) of which he is currently serving as President, Burleson County Czech Heritage Society, Texas Czech Genealogy Society (TCGS), and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC). On that note, I mentioned just a little while ago that Donnie was famous for cooking burgers for campers. He's also quite the pitmaster! Donnie barbecued 21 mouth-watering briskets for the TCHCC Muziky and Heritage Fest we had here last October.

Donnie brings to each organization that he supports the business acumen and people skills he gained as a school administrator and coach.

In 2024, in celebration of 100 years of University Interscholastic League high school basketball, the UIL honored the best, the brightest and the most unforgettable icons in the sport’s illustrious history. Making the list was Donnie Victorick, who in his 12 years of coaching amassed a 363-88 win-loss record and won five consecutive state championships at Snook High School from 1980 to 1984. Between 1978 and 1984, the Snook Bluejays won seven consecutive Class A state championships -- the streak was one short of the national high school basketball record set by Northfork High School of West Virginia from 1974 to 1981. During that same era, Donnie’s track teams earned state championships in 1980, 1981 and 1982. Behind every successful man, there is always a woman who believed in him and supported him, who trusted his instincts about the people and things he cared about. The woman who helped Donnie to become the man he is today was his dear wife, Janice, who passed from this earthly life in 2021.

A loving wife and a devoted mother, Janice was the rock for Donnie and supported him in all facets of his career. To illustrate, during Donnie’s coaching years, Janice attended every ball game. She took pride in caring for the boys and washed practice shirts every evening for the teams. She also made sure the players had fresh uniforms to wear when they were playing in tournaments. Following tournament games, Janice would gather their uniforms and go to the nearest laundromat to wash them while the team would go to eat. She loved all the players and treated them like her own.

To this day, many of the young athletes that Donnie coached and that Sister Janice supported have maintained close and personal relationships with Coach Donnie. They have become productive citizens and credit Donnie and Sister Janice for the tremendous and positive difference that they made in their lives – by believing in them and by helping them to become champions in the game of life.

We continue to miss and have fond memories of Sister Janice and her constant support and side-by-side presence with Donnie at SPJST events all over the state. Sister Janice’s unwavering support and belief in Donnie built him up to believe in himself and the causes that he has and continues to champion. Donnie did not know that we were going to be giving him his just recognition this evening; however, we did let his family in on the secret and we are happy to have in attendance, Donnie’s daughter Melissa and her husband, Allen Brown and their daughter, Addison. Also joining us this evening are Donnie’s sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Wallace Jahns and their daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Keith Casey. And looking down from above is his dear Janice and son, Ashley.

Included in the day’s awards, TOCA President Leon Anhaiser and Joyce Bezecny Lolley, left, of Fort Bend County Czech Heritage Society present a certificate to Frances Michulka Macha, who was recognized for her contributions to Czech heritage. Frances is a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton. Also honored at the event (but not pictured) was Edith Molberg, who was recognized by KJZT Family Life for her devotion to Czech culture. Edith is a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.
