Mother’s Day is May 12

As we approach Mother’s Day, let us take a moment to honor and remember all the special mothers in our lives. While we celebrate the love and care of those who are with us, let us also cherish the memories of those mothers who are no longer with us. May this Mother’s Day be filled with warmth, love, and fond remembrance.

Way to go, Brandon!

David and I love watching our former youth club members venturing through their college and professional careers.

Brandon Girod of Lodge 29, Taylor is a pitcher for HardinSimmons University. We heard that the HSU Cowboys were set to play University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders at their field just up the road in Belton. It was great to see Brandon on the mound and getting the win for HSU. Congratulations and best wishes!

Governance Committee shares recommendations received for Convention deliberations

Dear Members, The Governance Committee received recommendations to consider for its deliberations for the 2024 Convention. According to the by-laws, the Governance Committee shall review submitted recommendations for changes to the bylaws. The Governance Committee will also recommend to the Convention compensation of District Directors. The Governance Committee will present its recommendations to be published in the pre-Convention Vestnik on May 6, 2024.

Dear Governance Committee, The 2021 SPJST By-Laws were reviewed and discussed in Executive Committee meetings held in January, February, and April 2024. We present the following recommendations for your committee’s and the delegates’ considerations:

ARTICLE V MEMBERSHIP

Current By-Law:

Section 8. Local Lodge Membership. The local lodge has the right to determine whether it will accept an applicant for membership into the lodge. Upon receipt of notification of a new candidate for membership, the local lodge shall vote to accept or to reject the candidate no later than the second regularly scheduled meeting after notification is received by the local lodge. The candidate for membership must receive a majority vote of those present and voting to be accepted as a member. The local lodge secretary notifies the candidate whether he/she is accepted or rejected. If rejected, the

member may begin application to another lodge. No one may hold membership in more than one SPJST lodge.

Recommended Change:

Section 8. Local Lodge Membership. Individuals seeking membership in SPJST may indicate their preference for a local lodge on their application form. No one may hold membership in more than one SPJST lodge concurrently.

Reason for Change:

This change simplifies the local lodge membership selection and takes a significant step towards creating a more welcoming environment for all current and prospective members.

ARTICLE XII DISTRICT DIRECTORS

Current By-Law:

Section 59. District Director Requirements.

(i) Candidates seeking election for one of the seven elected District Director positions must state their intention to seek election and submit information to the Vestnik regarding their qualifications for a District Director position in accordance with the procedures established and published by the Board of Directors at least 120 days prior to the Convention. The Board of Directors shall help identify and encourage well qualified candidates from each District to seek election as a District Director and Alternate District Director. The Board of Directors shall review candidate information and may gather additional background information and shall submit the slate of candidates and qualification information to an ad-hoc Credentials Committee comprised of Convention delegates who shall review and provide the slate of candidates and information regarding qualifications to the delegates at the Convention.

— • — • — • — • — • —
Insuring & Enriching Lives

Recommended Change:

Move to ARTICLE VI - CONVENTION.

Section 12. Purpose.

(1) Candidates seeking election as District Director, Alternate District Director, Governance Committee, or Alternate Governance Committee must declare their candidacy and provide the Vestnik with details about their qualifications for the position. This information should be submitted following the procedures established and published by the Board of Directors, at least 120 days before the Convention.

(2) The Board of Directors is responsible for identifying and encouraging well-qualified candidates from each District to run for the positions of District Director, Alternate District Director, Governance Committee, and Alternate Governance Committee. The Executive Officers will review the submitted candidate information, may collect additional background details, and will present the slate of candidates along with qualification information to the Convention delegates.

Reason for Change:

Eliminate conflict and create efficiency. Board of Directors currently reviews candidate information and submits to an ad-hoc Credentials Committee comprised of Convention delegates.

ARTICLE XIV DISTRICTS

Current By-Law:

Section 66. District Officers. The following district officers shall be elected during the annual meeting: president; first vice president (to serve as fraternal activities coordinator for the district unless the district elects a fraternal activities coordinator as a separate position); second vice president (optional); secretary; treasurer; fraternal activities coordinator (optional); reporter (optional); district youth counselor; assistant youth counselor (where applicable); and flag bearer.

Recommended Change:

Section 66. District Council. The District Council shall consist of local lodge presidents and youth leaders or individuals designated by the local lodge president to serve on behalf of the lodge. The primary responsibility of the District Council shall be to coordinate and oversee the annual meeting. Each District

Council may select a chair, treasurer, and any other necessary leadership positions to facilitate the effective functioning of the group.

Reason for Change: Effective for 2025, the shift to a District Council model represents a strategic pivot towards leveraging existing leadership, enhancing engagement, and fostering a vibrant community culture. By focusing on the strengths and experiences of local lodge leaders, the organization aims to revitalize its district-level activities and meetings, making them more relevant, engaging, and welcoming for all members. This change underscores a commitment to leadership, member involvement, and the continuous pursuit of growth and improvement within the organization.

ARTICLE XV LOCAL LODGES

Current By-Law:

Section 74. Lodge Meetings. Local lodges must conduct monthly meetings unless they have permission from the Board of Directors to meet every three months so as to remain in good standing and have authority to elect delegates to the Convention. Meetings are conducted on the day and hour specified by the regulations of the local lodge.

Recommended Change:

Section 74. Lodge Meetings. Local lodges must conduct at least quarterly planning meetings to remain in good standing and elect delegates to the Convention. Meetings are held on the day and hour specified by the regulations of the local lodge and announced in the Vestnik.

Reason for Change: Currently, some lodges meet quarterly, while others meet monthly. By requiring all lodges to conduct at least quarterly planning meetings, the new regulation ensures consistency across all lodges within the organization. This standardization prevents any perceived advantage or disadvantage based on the frequency of meetings.

Recommended Addition to By-Laws:

(f) Failure of the lodge to meet regularly or to operate in accordance with the rules, regulations, by-laws, or fraternal spirit of the Society shall be grounds for the President/CEO, following consulta-

tion with the Board of Directors, to suspend the lodge’s charter for a period of 90 days. If the lodge fails to correct the deficiency within the suspension period, it shall be grounds for the reassignment of lodge members and/or the revocation of the lodge’s charter.

Reason for Addition: Overall, the inclusion of this provision in the by-laws strengthens governance, accountability, and the Society’s ability to maintain its organizational integrity. It provides a clear framework for addressing noncompliance while safeguarding the reputation and values of the organization.

Current By-Law:

Section 78. Lodge Officers.

(a) The offices of the local lodge president and secretary cannot be combined, but each other office may be combined with other offices.

Recommended Change:

Section 78. Lodge Officers.

(a) The office of the local lodge president may not be combined with any other office within the local lodge.

Reason for Change: Many organizations follow similar practices of keeping certain leadership positions separate to maintain transparency, accountability, and efficiency. The change brings the bylaw in line with these best practices in organizational governance.

Recommended Addition:

Section 78. Lodge Officers.

(d) The President/CEO shall have supervision and control over all lodge officers. He/She shall have the authority, following consultation with the Board of Directors, to remove from office any lodge officer who fails to properly perform the duties of said office or whose actions are deemed contrary to the best interest of the Society or the local lodge. In the event of a removal, another member of the lodge shall be appointed by the President/CEO of the Society to fill the vacancy in an interim capacity until the lodge can convene and fill the position through an elective process.

Reason for Addition: This by-law is designed to promote accountability, maintain organizational integrity, and facilitate effective leadership within the organization, ultimately contributing to its stability and success.

ARTICLE XVII ANNUITY CERTIFICATES

Recommended Addition:

Section 90. The Board of Directors sets policies and procedures on Annuity Certificates.

Reason for Change: Update to reflect same procedure as Section 92 with Mortgage Loans.

ARTICLE XXV RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES

Current By-Law: Section 104.

(b) Formal disciplinary procedures should be regarded as a drastic step reserved for serious situations or those potentially so. In the event that a grievance cannot be resolved informally, SPJST provides an orderly, confidential, and progressive procedure to deal with any serious differences of opinion which cause a member to believe that they have been dealt with unjustly.

(c) The grievance must be submitted in writing and signed by the person(s) making the charge. The grievance should be specific and should identify a desired outcome. Anonymous or unsigned grievances will not be considered. The grievance should be addressed to the lodge president — or if the lodge president is being cited — to the lodge vice president; and so on. Grievances dealing with matters on a district level or state level are to be directed directly to the Office of the President/CEO — or if the President/CEO is being cited — to the Chair of the Board of Directors. The procedural process is essentially the same as outlined throughout this section.

(d) The lodge president shall appoint a Lodge Grievance Committee of at least three members who are not directly involved or named in the grievance. The lodge president shall serve as a non-voting member of the Grievance Committee. In the event that the grievance involves the lodge president, the committee shall be appointed by the vice president or another lodge officer not cited or affected directly by the grievance. The Lodge Grievance Committee may be a standing committee of the lodge; otherwise, the Lodge Grievance Committee shall be designated at the next lodge meeting following the written filing of the grievance.

VĚSTNÍK Monday, April 29, 2024 5

(e) The Lodge Grievance Committee will be instructed to make a determination that the allegations cited against the member are well-founded. In the event that the allegations are determined wellfounded, the Lodge Grievance Committee shall address the matter, including any corrective actions which are deemed necessary, discretely with the member in question.

(f) The severity of the action taken or recommended by a Lodge Grievance Committee should depend upon the nature and severity of the offense. Under most circumstances, it is recommended that upon first offense, that the Lodge Grievance Committee issue a discrete written warning to the accused, detailing the offense and the corrective action(s); moreover, SPJST seeks to ensure that a lodge doesn’t expel anyone from membership for reasons of race, religion, gender, or disability.

(g) If the problem persists following this issuance of written warning — or if the individual cited protests the findings of the Lodge Grievance Committee — then the Lodge Grievance Committee may reconvene to reconsider the matter and — if deemed necessary — request that the accused member be brought before the general membership at a regularly scheduled lodge meeting for a hearing to:

(1) consider evidence and determine innocence or guilt by a two-thirds vote of eligible voting members present; and

(2) consider and vote upon disciplinary action(s) recommended by the Grievance Committee, subject to an affirmative vote by two-thirds of the voting members present.

(h) In the event of a finding of guilt by the lodge, the cited member may appeal, in writing, to the Board of Directors. Such an appeal must be made within 15 days after receipt of notice of action by the Grievance Committee; likewise, the aggrieved member, if not satisfied with the Grievance Committee’s ruling or sentencing, may appeal to the Board of Directors in the same manner as the accused member.

(i) The appeal will be added to the agenda of the next regular meeting of the Board of Directors

(j) The Board of Directors shall investigate thoroughly all facts pertinent to the

ruling of the Grievance Committee. To facilitate in this process, the lodge Grievance Committee will furnish a transcript of all prior proceedings on the matter to the President/CEO.

(k) The Board of Directors shall uphold, reject, and/or amend the ruling of the Grievance Committee, and this decision shall stand.

(l) All grievance proceedings under the by-laws shall be held in executive session, and the name of the member under investigation shall not be disclosed in any public communication or to any person other than to persons whose testimony is necessary in connection with the initial proceedings and/or subsequent lodge intercession. All communications concerning disciplinary proceedings are to be marked “Confidential” and all disciplinary files are to be maintained in strict confidence.

Recommended Change: Section 104.

(b) Lodge grievances and charges against members initiated by other members are to be filed in writing with the local lodge president, with a copy to the SPJST President/CEO.

(c) The local lodge president shall review the grievance and/or charge and render a determination after conferring with the SPJST President/CEO to be communicated discreetly to the member within 30 days of receipt of the grievance and/or charge. The member making the charge shall also be informed of the determination rendered by the local lodge president.

(d) The local lodge president’s determination of the grievance and/or charge may be appealed in writing to the SPJST President/CEO within 30 days of the local lodge president’s determination.

(e) The President/CEO’s decision shall be final unless the member files a written appeal of the decision within 30 days to the Board of Directors. The decision of the President/CEO will stand unless and until the decision is modified by the SPJST Board of Directors.

(f) If the charge is filed against the local lodge president, the grievance shall go directly to the SPJST President/CEO who shall render a determination within 30 days of receipt of the grievance or charge.

Reason for Change: These updates aim to improve the efficiency, transparency, and fairness of the resolution of disputes within the organization, ultimately strengthening trust and accountability among members.

As I look at the Directors serving now and those we need to prepare for in the future, now is the time for changes. The salary we receive has been good for many years, but seeing the donations that most directors are making to their lodges, districts, and communities is making choices tougher.

I went back and looked at Social Security and C.O.L.A. increases in the past eight years. The amounts are:

As this is the first Convention with a seated Governance Committee, I hope all goes well in your considerations for our upcoming Convention in June.

Important Convention Delegate Information

This totals to 25.8 percent over eight years, or 28.5 percent compounded over the past eight years. This would come to approximately $35,910. I feel that if you were to raise it 14 percent now, we could attract some of our younger members with the qualifications we are looking for to lead us in the future.

Douglas Galler Announces Candidacy for 34th SPJST Convention Chair

The excitement of the 34th SPJST Convention grows as we get closer to meeting in Temple in June. At the 33rd SPJST Convention in Killeen, I served as vice chair and have been encouraged by several members around the state to run for chair of the 34th SPJST Convention.

As a lifelong member of SPJST and Lodge 66, Waco, I have seen this organization from various perspectives. As a youth, I learned the values of perseverance, teamwork, and leadership by competing in youth achievement day, attending camp, and holding offices in my youth club at the local lodge and dis-

trict levels. In college, I worked at the Home Office as a Fraternal Department assistant where I saw firsthand the dayto-day activities of how the organization is run. As my own kids are now involved in the youth program, I have returned to my local lodge and have served as lodge president for the last four years.

In my professional career, I have led many organizations and events to achieve great things. From directing Little League regional tournaments and being involved in the Little League World Series to organizing the largest youth golf tournament in the state of Texas. As a photojournalist for KXXV, 25 News in Waco, I work to bring the stories within the community to viewers through their televisions and the web. I have been blessed outside of my professional career to be placed in leadership positions in various other activities, including the board of elders at my church and Robinson Little League.

I would appreciate your support and look forward to a successful Convention.

It’s Your Life

If Only I Would Have Done It Sooner

These are words we hear all the time. If you haven’t said it, at one time or another, you have thought it. If only I would have done it sooner, I could have gotten it on sale. If only I would have fixed that sooner, I wouldn’t have to replace it today. If only I would have reacted sooner, it would not cost me so much. Everyday someone is saying “if I only would have done it sooner.” Every time someone mutters those words, it means they are about to pay more one way or another. This is life. Like everything else in life, if you wait on your life insurance, it will cost more later.

The cost of life insurance is based on your age and health risk. The older you are, the more it will cost. You’re not only older, but your health changes. You are not as active, you take medication, your bones are more brittle, your mind is not as sharp as it used to be. Every single day someone older finds they need more insurance. It becomes a shock to see what the cost is. Middle age is not any better. You buy a 10-year term when you are 30 and still need it when you are 40, but now the price has increased. The trick is to buy a lifetime amount when you first look at insurance when you are younger, healthier, and less risky. If you are a parent, don’t let your children make the same mistake.

When you first get married, buy a house, have a kid, establish a career, you should be thinking of your entire life. The secret is to buy the combination that will fit your life. You don’t have to buy a million dollars in term. Get some term and some whole life. When the term is over, you won’t have sticker shock when you find out how expensive it is to keep the insurance. If you buy a term policy for your major financial period and a whole life policy at the same time, when that term is up, you still have insurance. And you are not paying any more for it. I have been selling life insurance since 1993 and have never recommended a term policy without attaching a whole life with it. It has saved my

clients thousands of dollars and never left them without insurance. If your agent only wants to sell you a term, ask them about adding whole life with it. If nothing else, at least a small burial plan ($20,000 is recommended).

Even more, you should think of your children and grandchildren. If you buy them a lifetime of insurance when they are at their youngest age and their healthiest, they wouldn’t have to pay more later when they do get married, have kids, a career, and large debt. Think of how much a $100,000 policy is for a one-year-old male ($50.41/month) or female ($47.26/month). Now, how much would it be when they are 30 years old, male ($104.64) or female ($95.12). For that $100,000 trade-off, the one-year-old male would have paid $42,344 when they were 71 years old. The 30-year-old male would have paid $51,482 for the same insurance by the time they were 71. And they would have coverage for 41 years versus the one-year-old who had 70 years of coverage for less money. It works the same with the female. I have mentioned before, I have a $100,000 UL and a $50,000 whole life on each of my grandchildren. I bought it for them when they were less than a year old. They don’t have to look, and they will be set for life. Next time you want insurance for your child or grandchild, think of how much you can save them tomorrow by getting the full amount today. A $10,000 policy is a great gift, but $100,000 is a lifetime of savings for them. If only you had bought more sooner for yourself, it would not cost so much. If only you buy more now for your children, it won’t cost them so much.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16

My door is always open, figuratively, and literally.

Stay blessed,

Member Engagement news from state fraternal director frank horak

Hello to our membership! I hope you are enjoying the nice spring temperatures around the state. Bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes have been in full bloom.

There are many items to talk about going into summer, and one of those is youth summer camp.

Youth leaders and parents, please note that camp registration will end May 1 at 11:59 p.m. Late camp registration will begin May 2 at 12 a.m. through May 15 11:59 p.m. You can read more details under the title “SPJST State Camp” below.

Our Lunch & Learn series are now set up for District One, Five, and Seven. The dates and times are found below under the title Lodge Lunch and Learn. I will be sending out an RSVP invitation (via Punchbowl) to lodge officers by text message or email. Please note it’s not spam; it’s really from me! It will be my pleasure traveling in May and reconnecting with the lodge officers in these districts. My hopes are that all officers will attend the Lunch & Learn to help answer questions and check out our new SPJST Gives app.

Connie’s Garden 2024

Connie’s garden is coming along quite well. Her small greenhouse has made a big difference in the size of the plants. They enjoy the hot, humid condition it creates for the fruit and vegetable plants. She has planted tomatoes, green beans, squash, and pepper in her raised beds. She has started cantaloupe from seed. They are doing very well, and hopefully will be planted in the garden soon. Connie has the green thumb for fruits and vegetables.

Roses, annuals, and perennials are thriving with my green thumb, and they are currently blooming beautifully. There are many bees, redbirds, bluejays, hummingbirds, and butterflies that are drawn into our yard. Connie and I enjoy sitting in our chairs in the backyard watching all the beauty nature offers.

Celebrating Our Volunteers

SPJST expresses its gratitude to each lodge officer for their invaluable contributions and tireless efforts to our fraternal society.

As a token of appreciation, the Communications and Member Engagement Department has custom-made for you a badge with the SPJST Logo, your name, and lodge. Wear it with pride while representing SPJST at community events or service projects alongside other organizations. Your district director will be presenting these badges to you in the coming weeks.

SPJST State Camp

Summer camp is Wednesday, June 19 to Sunday, June 23 at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter . . . and what a week of fun and excitement we have planned. Kids, you do not want to miss this amazing opportunity! Register today for summer camp at spjst.org/camp. Please do not wait until May 1. Register now! Once all slots are filled, there will be a waiting list created.

The 2024 SPJST Summer Camp Information Guide with camp details, packing list, and additional guidelines is available on the camp page of the website.

Please don’t forget to download the Camper Drug Administration Record and complete it before arriving at camp. You will present this page to our staff during check-in.

Chaperone registration is open for 2024. Just like last year, chaperones will register on the same website as campers. Once camp late registration closes, I will know the number of chaperones needed for camp. Selected chaperones will receive an invitation, contract, and link to complete registration.

2024 Caring Challenges Adult Lodge and Youth Groups

The 2024 Caring Challenges are set up a little different than last year’s challenges. Each monthly challenge will follow the quarter theme that SPJST youth clubs, lodges, and members are invited to participate in. The second quarter theme for April to June is “Seeds Of Caring.”

Note: These are ideas and suggestions for lodges, youth clubs, and members who are wishing to make a difference in their communities and earn service hours for the incentives program. We realize that some lodges meet quarterly - you are not required to do any or all of these projects. We are hoping these ideas provide motivation and inspiration. A big THANK YOU to the lodges, youth clubs, and members who are participating in these projects.

Our May caring challenge is, “Community Cleanup Crusade!” As May unfolds, clean up the community by picking up trash in the park, along the roadside, at the beach, or cleaning and beautifying a cemetery. There are so many projects that lodges and youth clubs can do together or invite other fraternal groups to join in and help.

Photograph your projects and members who participated. Submit your photo along with details at spjst.org/gives and share it on social media using #spjstgives.

Lodge 107, Floresville honors Milestone Members

SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville convened for its monthly gathering on the pleasant afternoon of Sunday, April 14, 2024, at the lodge hall, at 3 p.m. under the leadership of President Bielefeld.

The proceedings began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a solemn moment of reflection to honor departed comrades, valiant servicemen and women, and esteemed veterans.

In the roll call of officers, Youth Leader Lynn’s absence was noted. Secretary Pruski presented the minutes from the March meeting, which were met with unanimous approval. Treasurer Korus then provided a comprehensive overview of the lodge’s financial status for March, a report that garnered swift endorsement from the assembled members.

The importance of timely submissions was underscored in this month’s correspondence, particularly emphasizing the imperative of submitting our quarterly 2024 Incentives Program information by April 15 and the upcoming deadline of May 15 for the 2023 financial reports.

FAC Bielefeld offered an update on the ongoing April project, which involves the construction of birdhouses, as well as the ongoing collection of pop tabs, both initiatives embodying the

spirit of community and stewardship.

Hall Manager Bertrand shared encouraging news regarding hall rentals, with occupancy rates reaching an impressive 89 percent for the remainder of the year. However, attention was drawn to the need for maintenance, notably the timely scheduling of a workday to address issues such as repainting the front door.

Reporter Bielefeld proudly submitted the March meeting report, a testament to the lodge’s ongoing commitment to transparency and community engagement, which had been prominently featured in the April 8 edition of the Vestnik.

Under the agenda item of old business, enthusiastic discussions ensued regarding plans for the upcoming fall fun day, slated for September 8, with the district also coordinating a delightful potluck lunch.

Next Meeting—May 19

With no new business to address, the meeting concluded on a positive note, with the anticipation of reconvening on Sunday, May 19 at the lodge hall, once again at 3 p.m.

Following the official proceedings, members commemorated significant milestones with heartfelt camaraderie, accompanied by indulgent slices of cake and refreshing punches, fostering a sense of fellowship and community that epitomizes the essence of SPJST Lodge 107.

Lodge 117, Robstown member: Halo Flight is heartbeat hero

Dear Readers,

For one of the 2024 caring challenges, I decided to honor Halo Flight as my heartbeat heroes.

For more than 35 years, South Texans have relied on halo flight to provide dependable, 24/7 air ambulance service.

Since 1987, Halo Flight has flown more than 25,000 missions to regional hospital and to San Antonio, Austin, and Houston and provides a high level of care. It is the Coastal Bend’s only nonprofit air ambulance operation, and relies on support from the community and businesses.

Lodge 117, Robstown has been donating to Halo Flight for several years. I decided to bake various items and deliver them on March 1. They do an amazing job, and should I need the service, they will be there.

Ennis Sewing Circle reports on activities; welcomes visitors

The Ennis Sewing Circle – Kroužek – continues to meet every second Thursday in the Sokol clubroom to carry on the old time tradition of hand quilting. We hand quilt for our members who have pieced the tops on their own. We also make one quilt per year to donate to the Ennis Junior Sokol gymnastics program for a raffle fundraiser.

We arrive at 8:30 a.m. to set up a wooden frame, then stretch the backing fabric, fluffy batting, and quilt top creation to begin hand stitching. It is also a great time to catch up on our members’ and friends’ doings over the past month as we sew. At noon, we enjoy a potluck lunch, followed by a short business meeting.

We welcome visitors and new members to help us carry on this tradition. Anyone interested in learning more about quilting is invited to attend at Sokol Ennis at 2622 East Highway 34. It is about one mile east of the Highway

34/Interstate 45 intersection. We enter on the west side of the building toward the swimming pool. For more information, visit the Sokol Ennis facebook page. Sewing Circle members do not have to be members of Sokol.

SPJST at Lake Travis Assisted Living Commitment to Care

Spring 2024 marks one year since SPJST Senior Living extended its services to Lake Travis region seniors. It has been a year of steady progress for our newest acquisition, Assisted Living at Lake Travis, formerly known as Grace House on Bee Caves Road. This community is nestled among a cluster of boutique shops in Upland Village near Hill Country Galleria and is surrounded by a grove of post oak and crepe myrtle trees, enhancing the feeling of home. Each of its two small households offers 16 private suites in a comfortable, residential atmosphere.

Awarded for its architectural household design over 20 years ago, Grace House initially opened with a stellar reputation. However, after a series of for-profit owners, the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and increased competition in the Lake Travis/Lakeway region, the community welcomed a seasoned ownership with a core mission of caring.

“Our mission is caring for seniors in the Texas region,” says Donnie Victorick, president of SPJST Senior Living Board. “One of the first benefits we recognized in extending our reach in North Austin was the presence of a dedicated core team of caring professionals.”

Throughout the decades, the quality of care provided by our dedicated team members has remained consistent. Teresa Brashear, executive director at SPJST at Lake Travis Assisted Living, and Shelia Irvin, director of resident services, have each been on site for more than 17 years.

“Total compassion, love and 100 percent dedication from the care team defined my mother’s experience,” shares Elizabeth Collins, whose mother was a resident for more than 10 years.

With two talented and seasoned chefs, Chef Henry (20 years) and Chef Moe (over 14 years), our community has

gained a reputation for creating dishes that not only satisfy the taste buds but also provides residents with the flexibility to socialize in the dining room or enjoy meals in the privacy of their own apartments.

“Customized care and family choice make this place special for Mom,” explains Melanie Davis McQueen. “It feels like a boutique experience, allowing Mom the occasional choice of having dinner in privacy or coordinating with us to bring in a massage professional for that special touch.” Melanie’s mother has been a resident for nearly four years.

Come share our excitement over this unique and tranquil setting for seniors needing more support and socialization than home.

FAMILY CAMPING, FRATERNALISM, CAMP KUBENA

Roasting smores on an open fire, singing songs on a cool fall night, jumping into a clear pond on a hot summer day, or just listening to grandparents tell stories of life in Texas years ago. These are just some of the activities and experiences that bond families and communities together for life. As a member of SPJST, my kids and I have come to appreciate the foundations of fraternalism exemplified during SPJST’s youth summer camp experience at the wonderful and beautiful Camp Kubena. This camp has provided a family bond and unforgettable memories that will be with me and my kids for the rest of our lives. I love the stories told by SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek about the history of the Czech culture, or the stories from State Fraternal Director Frank Horak about his kids growing up in the SPJST youth program. It is so amazing to hear about so many great experiences that it is easy for anyone to feel a real connection to this amazing culture in central Texas. This is why it is so important to get families out and disconnect from all distractions we have today. What better way to disconnect than to take advantage of our SPJST-owned facility, Camp Kubena. This amazing facility is a wonderful resource for our lodges and organization to reconnect with each other in a true fraternal spirit.

As technology, social media, and population growth are always competing for attention, camping is one of the best ways to disconnect ourselves and our children and hit the “rest” button. In fact, research shows that a week of camping has incredible benefits for our sleep habits. Another benefit of camping is, it is an excellent way for kids and grown-ups to learn about nature, experience what it’s like to “be” in nature and grow more comfortable and confident in the outdoors. Setting up camp, exploring nearby nature, cooking, and sleeping in the great outdoors brings us all closer to nature. And

of course, the more often we do it, the more confident campers our kids will be! Here are some great benefits of being at Camp Kubena.

Bonding Time

While all vacations do wonders for family cohesion and bonding, research has found nature-seeking vacationers who regularly engage in activities like camping and hiking, are the most well bonded.

Physical Benefits

As camping usually takes place in natural areas, the air is cleaner, giving us a break from the air pollution we are often subject to. Kids are especially susceptible to air pollution given their growing lungs. Camp Kubena can help with this. Researchers at an asthma summer camp found that air pollution was significantly and consistently correlated with acute asthma exacerbations, chest symptoms and lung function decrements.

Mental Benefits

In addition to the physical benefits, camping can also have a positive impact on mental health. It offers a chance to disconnect from technology and daily routines, which can help to reduce stress and improve mood. Camping also provides an opportunity for children to develop a sense of independence, responsibility, and self-reliance. Kids can help with all aspects of this adventure by helping with meals and taking care of their gear, which can boost their confidence and sense of accomplishment.

Unplugging

A child will have spent one year of 24-hour days on screens by the age of eight. It is time to unplug. And while you are likely to experience resistance from kids, one approach is to adopt a practice of short bursts of unplugging. Camp Kubena is a perfect place to do this! Make sure you all leave your devices at home when packing. Of course, your cell phone will be needed for emergencies and possibly navigation. But that’s all you should need in terms of tech.

Nature Connection

Children who spend more time in nature are more connected to it. A nature-connected child is one who will spend more time outdoors throughout their life and will be happier, more adjusted, calmer, and a better steward of nature. What’s not to like here?

What is available for families at Camp Kubena?

There are a variety of resources available for families who are interested in starting camping. Here are a few options:

• Lodge outing

• SPJST Youth Summer Camp

• Family reunion

• Wedding

• Local group or organization retreat

• Holiday getaway for a group of families

In summary, SPJST fraternalism is founded upon the principle that each of us has a responsibility to help each other and provide a way for people to meet at friendly gatherings. Fraternalism seeks to build relationships. With new relationships, come vitality, adventure, the freedom to strive, compete, and create. Camp Kubena is an excellent place for families to participate fraternally and make unforgettable memories together. With a little planning and preparation, anyone can enjoy a fun and successful adventure with their family at camp. Pack up your gear, grab your loved ones, and come out to Camp Kubena — where the oak trees grow real tall!

Inspirational gifts for Mother's Day

Mother's Day will be celebrated Sunday, May 12, 2024. Mother's Day is devoted to expressing love and showering praise on mothers, step-mothers, and special ones who have been a motherly figure in your life.

It is customary to lavish extra praise on moms come Mother's Day, and that often involves gift-giving. The following gift ideas can ensure Mom knows her efforts and unconditional love have not gone unnoticed.

● Motivational can-do candles: A little aromatherapy can treat any mother to an uplifting or relaxing fragrance in her special place in the home. But these inspirational candles from Bianchi Candle Co. feature names like "bravery," "joy" and "gratitude" and a motivational message. Purchase at bianchicandleco.com.

● Inspirational coffee table book: Author and educator Natalie Friscia Pancetti wrote, "This Too. Life-Isms to Savor the Sweetness of Life and Calm You Through the Storms" to pay homage to her parents, particularly her father, who was fond of the phrase, "this too shall pass." Pancetti says people often relate the phrase to rough patches in life, but it also can refer to cherishing all the moments that are fleeting. The book offers many inspirational passages and lessons that can be applied to all aspects of life. It can be a touching gift for a mom, grandmother, or another special woman.

● Relaxing home spa experience: Many people have turned their bathrooms into home spas, particularly empty nesters who now have more time to relax and pamper themselves. Spending time in a relaxing shower is a way for Mom to clear her mind and unwind, and home spa necessities like loofahs or a bathrobe are great suggestions.

● Ancestry exploration: Foster greater bonds in the family by giving Mom an opportunity to further trace her heritage. Genealogy online companies enable anyone to enjoy a look back at the lineage that helped shape who they are today. Most can help trace ancestors and even connect people with distant relatives.

Mother's Day gifting can revolve around inspirational and heartfelt gifts that show special mothers how much they are appreciated. (metroservice) —SPJST—

Make Make Mother's Day Mother's Day Special Special

Mother's Day is a great time of year to honor mothers and attempt to give back just a portion of the tireless love and devotion moms offer their children. Some children provide large gestures, while others feel it's the little things that can help a mom to feel appreciated. For those needing a little inspiration on treating their mothers in special ways, consider these ideas.

✓ Make mom a breakfast in bed with her favorite morning treats.

✓ Enjoy a movie at home with mom. Let her pick the flick and share her favorite film with you.

✓ Agree to not bicker for the entire day, especially if you are prone to getting into arguments with siblings.

✓ Put together a collage of photos from moments you have shared with mom or your family.

✓ Cook a meal together and learn about everyone's favorite recipes or the family history.

✓ Give her a locket with your photo inside and have a duplicate you can wear containing her photo.

✓ Customize a coffee mug, tote bag or a blanket with a meaningful sentiment or photo.

✓ Treat mom to a day off from her chores. Tackle all of the jobs she normally does for the family.

✓ Bake a delicious dessert that mom will absolutely devour.

✓ Pamper mom with a gift card for her favorite nail salon or massage therapy location.

✓ Prepare a jar of mom's favorite candies wrapped in pieces of paper that have loving sentiments written on them.

✓ Compile a playlist of songs and artists mom prefers and download them to her phone.

✓ Begin a charm bracelet tradition by purchasing a charm bracelet and a new charm each year that represents a meaningful memory you both shared.

✓ Write a new email each day with an inspirational quote or special words of love for mom.

✓ Tackle a task that she may not want to do herself, such as washing the exterior of her car and vacuuming the interior.

Mother's Day gift ideas should come from the heart and can show mothers near and far how much they are appreciated and loved. (metroservice)

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club sets May 5 cleanup, member honors, fiesta dinner

The Sunday, April 7, 2024, meeting of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club was called to order at 1:07 p.m. by Carson Erskine. Seth Martinez led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST youth club motto. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer. The register was read, and present were 12 members and nine adults.

The charity project for this month was “Nourishing Nature.” Youth made bird feeders and planted some flowers. Our youth leader, Amber, reported the charity project for May will be the Community Cleanup Crusade. Youth will be cleaning up around the hall before the next youth meeting. Youth are encouraged to stay after the meeting for a fiesta meal honoring the 25-, 50-, and 75-year members. The charity project for June will be Pop-Tab Palooza for the Ronald McDonald House. A date will be decided later for when we will be donating them.

Lodge 187, Round Rock Youth enjoy day full of fun

The picnic will be on Sunday, June 1. Preferably older youth are needed to help run plates for the drive-through that day.

Members with birthdays this month are Bailee Beckendorf.

The next youth club meeting will be Sunday, May 5 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall following the hall cleanup. A ceremony for 25-, 50-, and 75-year members will follow the meeting. After that, a fiesta will be held.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:32 p.m.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth shares life activities: birthday, STAAR test, soccer

Dear Vestnik Readers,

This is Andrew speaking. It is April. Yay! That means May is next, and it is almost my birthday! Yay! April also means STAAR testing time. Boo. My first STAAR test is Wednesday, April 10. This is my first-ever STAAR test so I am a little worried about it.

Today, at the youth meeting, we made bird feeders. It was fun, and they came out really cool.

Soccer started in March. I am really good at it this year. We did not have any games the last two weekends because of Easter and the solar eclipse. I cannot wait to start playing games again.

I cannot wait until school gets out. Summer vacation is going to be fun! That’s the one thing I am looking forward to besides my birthday and soccer!

Well, I am going to say bye so bye, guys!

Andrew Ordogne, age 8 —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth witness total solar eclipse

Dear Vestnik Readers,

What a day it has been! Today, I got to see a total solar eclipse. I think it was really a once in a lifetime experience. It was really cool to experience the totality. I made sure to wear my glasses at all times, though. I didn’t want to risk hurting my eyes.

Easter just came by. It was a pretty good Easter this year. We ate spaghetti casserole. I got a lot of candy from hunting for Easter eggs.

The STAAR test is coming up. I don’t like the STAAR test mostly because we have to take like five other practice STAAR tests in the year. I don’t think they should have that much, but it is what it is. Have a great month! Fraternally,

Lodge 185, New Braunfels youth sees solar eclipse in Salt Lake City

Hi, This past weekend, I got to travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, for my sister’s volleyball tournament. While we were there, it snowed on us several times. I also got to see the solar eclipse. It wasn’t the full eclipse like back home, but it was fun to see!

—Jennifer McCarthy, Youth Coordinator

The lodge gathered up lots of pantry items and took them to Dell Diamond for Fan Fest day. All donations are going to the Round Rock food pantry. We had lots of fun, and we got to see the Clydesdales. Afterwards, we went to an Easter egg hunt. Lastly, we went to the spring carnival at Dell Diamond. All had a great time.

This past weekend, I was able to fly for the first time to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a volleyball tournament. Flying was fun and experiencing a new state was exciting. I am hoping to go back there next year!

In Memory of Margaret Majek

Margaret Mary Hermis Majek passed away peacefully due to natural causes on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

A prayer of the rosary for her repose was held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 11 at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, followed by mass at 10 a.m.

Born on September 19, 1931, in Moravia to Ludwig Hermis and Mary Sassin Hermis, Margaret was a woman of remarkable strength, boundless energy, and unwavering faith.

Raised in the close-knit community of Moravia, Margaret attended local schools and worked on the family farm where she established a foundation of hard work and determination. In her teens, the family moved to Chapman Ranch, where they all worked in the cotton fields. Her strong work ethic led to a position at the Folger’s Coffee plant in Corpus Christi, where she was promoted to line manager, a role she performed with dedication and pride.

Margaret met the love of her life, Frank Majek at a polka dance (of course). He got her attention by kneeing her in the back of her knees, causing her to fall. With full-time jobs, the young couple worked side-by-side to build and pay for their first home before their marriage. This was the first of countless projects that the pair worked on across their 45 years of marriage until Frank’s passing in 1996.

A lifelong caregiver, Margaret’s nurturing spirit shone brightest within her family. She stepped in to help raise a niece after the untimely death of the niece’s mother and guided her two boys through the challenges of sports, scouts, and church activities. Later in life, she extended her care to the elderly, devoting countless hours to those in the twilight of their years. Her grandchildren were the absolute light of her life, and she doted on them with every opportunity, imparting lessons of total love.

Margaret’s interests were as varied as they were passionate. In her younger days, she was known as “Maggie Majek” on the softball field. Her dedication to fitness and well-being was a

lifelong pursuit. Margaret was a devout member of her church, where she found solace and strength in her faith. She also held a deep love for polka music, often swaying to the tunes of the family Leo Majek Orchestra.

Margaret’s life was characterized by her love for her family. She was a matriarch in the truest sense, leading by example and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched. Her care and love for her sons, grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews will be greatly missed.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Frederick Majek; cherished siblings Henrietta Hermis Walden, Mary Ann Hermis McClain, and Wilbert Ludwig Hermis; sister-in-law Mary Roschetzky; and brothers-in law Julius, John, Joseph, Leo, and Charlie Majek.

She is survived by her devoted sister, Virginia Hermis Rebecek (Marcus) and sisters-in-law Daisy Clifton Hermis Blanton (Jerry) and Alean Schanen Majek. Margaret’s legacy continues through sons Randy Gerard Majek (Lynne) and Ronnie Gerard Majek (Pam); adored grandchildren Olivia (Fern) Grace Majek and Meredith Marie Majek; and nieces and nephews.

In Memory of Katie Mogonye

Katherine (Katie) Louisa Wolf Mogonye of Elgin, Texas, left this world to meet her Lord on Wednesday, April 4, 2024, at the age of 97 years, two months shy of 98 years old. She is leaving behind a life full of cherished memories and a legacy of kindness and generosity.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 11 at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home in Elgin.

The memorial service to honor and celebrate Katie’s life was at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 12 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elgin. A private graveside ceremony was held beforehand. Immediately following the memorial service, family and friends gathered to reminisce and visit in the fellowship hall.

Katie was born on June 12, 1926, in McDade to Martin and Martha Wolf. In 1946, she married Jim V. Mogonye. They were married for 65 years and resided in Elgin until his passing in 2014.

Katie’s loving spirit led to her helping others which led in turn her to a nursing career. Immediately after her high school graduation in 1943, Katie began her life by joining the Nurse Cadet Corp training program at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. After graduating, World War II had ended, and her first job was as a Red Cross Nurse in Kansas City, Missouri, during the polio epidemic. After leaving Missouri, she worked at a hospital in Harlingen, Texas, and in 1947, she returned home as a nurse at Elgin Fleming Hospital then as a nurse at Elgin Nursing Home. Katie would also say she loved every minute of nursing, and she was always glad to help others. Nursing was a way of life for Katie which is evident having been a nurse for 55 years.

During her 50-plus years of living in Elgin, she selflessly volunteered and belonged to a multitude of organizations. She received many awards for her community service such as Homemaker of the Year in 1980 and again in 1984, Outstanding and Significant Personal Service Certificate by the HR Department of Texas, and she was named the Most

Worthy Citizen of the Year by the Elgin Chamber of Commerce. But perhaps her most passionate volunteer work was for the American Cancer Society where she was instrumental in implementing the “Reach for Recovery” program in Elgin. This was due to her breast cancer diagnosis which she was in remission of for five years, only to learn the cancer had returned. Through her enduring faith, steadfast family and friends, amazing doctors at MD Anderson, and her endless determination, she overcame cancer a second time and was cancer free for the remainder of her life.

Katie has touched so many lives over the years, and she cherished each person she encountered. Her kind touch, thoughtful words, sincerity, and dedication to others was the essence of Katie’s character.

Katie was a member of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jim V. Mogonye; brother Martin (Katherine) Wolf; sister Adeline (Alvin) Wolf Eschberger; and brother Dan Wolf.

Katie is survived by her loving children: Mike Mogonye of Elgin, Paul (Sandra) Mogonye of Elgin, and Amy (Rob) Mogonye Darsey of Fredericksburg; grandchildren Rebecca (Matthew) Mogonye Tabor, Stephen (Sally) Mogonye, Darren Mogonye, Clee Mogonye, Randall Mogonye, Kyle (Adriana) Mogonye, Matt Darsey, and Kate Darsey; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; and sister-in-law, Dan Wolf’s wife, Evelyn Wolf.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elgin; Shiloh Cemetery Organization in McDade; Cattlemen For Cancer Research in Bastrop County; and SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin.

Happy Mother’s DayVšechno nejlepší ke

Mother’s Day in the Czech Republic is celebrated with heartfelt appreciation for mothers and maternal figures.

History surrounding this special day

● The first celebration of Den matekMother’s Day in then-Czechoslovakia took place in 1926.

● Alice Masaryková, the daughter of the first Czechoslovak president - Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk - played a pivotal role in introducing this holiday.

● The inspiration for Mother’s Day in the Czech lands came from the American model, where it always falls on the second Sunday in May. Alice’s mother - Charlotte Garrigue Masaryk - was American, and the holiday had been celebrated in the U.S. since 1907, becoming an official national holiday in 1914.

● Interestingly, 1923 is often cited as the start of Mother’s Day in the Czech lands. This is because Charlotte Garrigue Masaryk, Alice’s mother, passed away on what would have been Mother’s Day that year.

Traditions

Similar to many countries, the celebration involves children expressing their love and gratitude to their mothers. Common gestures include:

● Flowers: Children give flowers to their mothers as a symbol of thanks.

● Cards and Handmade Gifts: Children create heartfelt cards or hand-made gifts to honor their mothers.

● Cooking and Cleaning: In many families, children take over household chores, cooking, and cleaning for the day, allowing their mothers to relax and feel appreciated.

Contemporary Celebrations

Today, Mother’s Day in the Czech Republic closely resembles the American holiday. Children create cards and crafts to present to their mothers, while husbands often buy flowers to celebrate their wives. Let us cherish the love and sacrifices of mothers, not only on this special day but every day.
