When Star-Spangled Banners Are Too Worn To Wave, American Legion Post 602 Retires Them With Dignity

A replica of the USPS mail collection box was purchased and donated to SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville by veteran Ronnie Pflughaupt and wife Debbie. They are members of Lodge 1, and Ronnie is a fourth generation member. The red, blue, and yellow receptacle is for worn and tattered United States flags. The American Legion Post 602 of Shelby will properly dispose of the flags collected at their retirement ceremony. The collection box is placed in front of Fayetteville Area Heritage Museum on the square in downtown Fayetteville. If in the neighborhood, stop by and Czech it out as well as the beautiful museum where you can read about the “Daddy of SPJST” - JR Kubena. —SPJST—

Wins National Essay Contest

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, SPJST Lodge 81, Needville Youth Club member Amber Jones from Needville Middle School was announced as the winner of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas 2024 –National Fourth Grade Essay contest with her essay on Collin McKinney. Amber wrote her essay in January. The essay was submitted to the John Berry DRT chapter in Georgetown, Texas, where she is a Children of the Republic of Texas member. On March 16, Amber was asked to read her essay to the adult chapter (image provided). She advanced, competed, and won the top prize for the State of Texas. A copy of her essay will be placed in the DRT Library in San An-

tonio. Amber has been invited to read her essay at the Daughters of the Republic of Texas National Convention in Lubbock on Saturday, May 25. Amber is 10 years old and an active member in her community. In addition to being in the CRT and SPJST, she is also a Girl Scout of Troop 15410 in Needville and an active youth volunteer at her church, Creekside Christian Fellowship.

Amber enjoys reading and playing on the trampoline with her sisters. Congratulations, Amber, and safe travels to Lubbock!

Did you know that there is a county named after Collin McKinney, and that is where his museum lies? Collin McKinney was a savior, patriot, and traveler. McKinney lived a long life, and he would never retire. He lived as a wise man helping to improve Texas. McKinney was humble, persuasive, quiet, and observant. Many saw Mr. McKinney as a mentor helping others. Let me tell you about this interesting man.

TCzech Brass Band to visit Texas in May

he Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Foundation are proud to welcome and host the Pardubická Muzika Brass Band from the renowned Pardubice Conservatory of Music in the Czech Republic. They will perform at Seaton Star Hall on Wednesday, May 22. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the concert is from 7 to 9 p.m. Suggested admission donation is $10, and proceeds benefit the Czech Heritage Museum of Temple. The band will also visit other Texas cities. See page 27 for details.

issues of the Vestnik. Leon’s suggestion of “Help Me Find My Czech Ancestor” aims to connect individuals in search of their Czech heritage.

This feature will include details such as the name of the Czech ancestor, town of origin, immigration ship’s name, year of immigration, age of immigrant, birthdate, burial location, marriage information, and more. If you’re on the quest to trace your Czech roots, we invite you to share your ancestor’s details with the Vestnik. Convention weekend begins in 26 days

Dear Convention Delegates and Members,

The 34th SPJST Convention is coming up on Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9, 2024, in Temple, Texas. The Convention is less than one month away, and we are gearing up for an exciting event. We want to ensure a smooth and efficient experience for all attendees.

Convention App

The SPJST Convention App is ready for delegates to download and install on

an iOS or Android device. We are using the Yapp platform for this app. The app is also readable from a laptop/desktop. Delegates can download the app at https://my.yapp.us/SPJST and follow the instructions.

The app includes convention news, convenient RSVP/meal payment options, documents, social feed, FAQs, schedule, hotels, venue map, pre-convention reports, contacts, and photos. The SPJST Convention App is your source for the latest updates on the 2024 Convention.

Hotels

The host hotel for this year’s Convention is Hilton Garden Inn, located at 1749 Scott Boulevard in Temple, Texas. Note the host hotel has reached its capacity on rooms. Some delegates may be provided rooms at the neighboring hotel, located across the street.

Delegate Check-In

Delegate check-in will begin in the ballroom at Hilton Garten Inn on Friday, June 7 at 4:30 p.m. The Welcome Reception is Friday evening, June 7 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Delegate’s check-in will continue on Saturday morning, June 8 at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Conference Center from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Meals - Lunches and Dinner

All members and interested guests are invited to attend the Convention and its activities. Lunch and dinner meals will be provided for delegates, Executive Committee and Governance Committee members, and Home Office Staff; ho-

wever, they must be reserved no later than May 24. Costs for guests will be $10 for lunch and $22 for dinner. Delegates may reserve their meals in the SPJST Convention App or online at https://spjst.org/2024convention/ Saturday lunch selections are chicken salad sandwich and chips; club sandwich and chips; or grilled chicken salad. All selections include a freshly baked cookie.

The menu for Saturday’s banquet dinner is ribeye steak or grilled chicken, salad, potatoes with cheese, green beans, and dessert.

Donnie Victorick Announces Candidacy for 34th SPJST Convention Vice Chair

I write to you today with a mix of gratitude, reflection, and optimism for the future of our organization. It is with great pleasure to learn of the announcement by Douglas Galler of Lodge 66, Waco in District Three seeking the chair of our 34th Quadrennial Convention. It is encouraging that our younger members are stepping up to be involved which is important for the future of SPJST. In the latter part of 2023, I informed the Executive Committee that I would not seek or accept the nomination as chair of our Convention.

I have had the honor and privilege of serving as Convention Chair since 1988, with the exception being in 2000. I have been chair for eight Conventions and feel it is time to encourage our younger leaders to step up and lead what is a very important part of our future success. The American Fraternal Alliance(formally National Fraternal Congress of America) has stressed the need to have a succession plan for all fraternals to succeed. I know it is time for our younger members who know the value of our Czech heritage to fill these positions. Therefore, I am stepping aside to let our future be a factor in determining our success. I appreciate the opportunity to have served. For this, I am forever grateful.

We must all realize that our younger members are the future of SPJST. If we do not let them spread their wings when they are interested, will they become discouraged and say we do not have a chance to make a difference? Unfortunately, SPJST is at a point where our younger members are not involved in

numbers we need to continue that success. I ask why? Is it because of our refusal to step aside, or is it because they have other interests, or is it because we have not promoted what we stand for which is the preservation of our Czech heritage and close family ties? We all must accept that there is such a thing as trying to hang on too long. Coach John Calapari, now at Arkansas, in an interview, said he stayed at Kentucky five years too long. He says, “Sometimes holding on for too long becomes counterproductive.”

We all resist change but must accept the fact that it is inevitable. We cannot keep doing the same ol’ thing and keep getting the same ole results to survive. Our environment is forever changing with new ideas and technology. Either we adapt, or we cease to exist. This is a hard fact to accept.

I have heard speakers say that whether you are 80 or 20, you need to grow every day. If you don’t, you are not living but just existing.

When things are going good, you cannot start becoming complacent and coast but continue to push forward and make sure we are successful.

SPJST is at a crossroads of where we want to be. We must make sure we have the right people leading our organization as Executive Officers and Directors who are qualified to hold their positions and also be held accountable for their performance. We are blessed with Executive Officers who are qualified and work together for the good of the organization. We have District Directors who are committed to doing what is best for SPJST without trying to please everyone. We have a fiduciary responsibility to make sure we make decisions which we think are in the best for SPJST. We also agree to disagree without taking it personal. We must ask questions, do research, and decide what is best by taking a stand. We must have qualified individuals to oversee a $270 million organization. The days of the good ol’ boys are over with our changing world. To emphasize the point, look at the number of fraternals which have failed recently because of individuals not able to perform as necessary because they were wellliked but lacked the necessary skills to succeed. This is harsh, but a reality. We

cannot let this happen to our SPJST. We must make sure we have individuals to serve in these positions who are held accountable and are qualified to hold the position. Nothing else will be accepted if you as delegates hold on to these standards.

I am thankful for the progress SPJST has made over the last three years with this past year, 2023, realizing a remarkable achievement of a $2.1 million net income, an addition to our surplus, and also investing in and improving our admin system. Many improvement decisions must be made to ensure our success. We just have to keep pushing for efficiency and improved technology and expecting performance in all areas.

With this being said, I have previously announced my intentions for

another term as a District One Director and also say I would be honored to serve as Vice Chair of our 34th Convention to serve as support for a young man who has come up through the program and is definitely qualified to be our Convention Chair. In 2021, he served as Convention Vice Chair, and I ask you to support him as Chair-elect for 2024. Wishing the best for what appears to be a great Convention and future success of SPJST.

It’s Your Life

You Are A Seeker

(Taken from “You Are . . . Realizing Who You Are Because of Who God Is”

There are about 4,200 different religions practiced across the world. This isn’t the number showing the amount of people devoted to one religion but rather the number of religions the people across the nations are devoting themselves to. From Christianity to Hinduism to Islam to Buddhism, there are people all over the globe seeking for order and purpose in their world. They are seeking for hope beyond what they can see and meaning in the place they are in. According to the MerriamWebster Dictionary, to worship is “to honor or show reverence for a divine being or supernatural power.” The fact that about 4,200 religions are practiced to express worship shows that all of us, no matter who we are or where we come from, were made to worship something greater than us.

One morning while reading in Matthew 7, I came across something that Jesus said that really got me thinking about what we are seeking, and where we are expecting to find that which we are seeking. What Jesus said was, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8 NIV).

All of us on earth are seeking peace and joy and purpose. Each of us is seeking confidence in identity. So the question is not whether we are seeking these things but rather, where are we looking to find these things? We seek these things in our relationships, in the jobs we have, approval from others, in how fit our bodies can be, in how put together our families can look,

in how much money our bank can hold, and the list goes on and on. But if we were to honestly ask ourselves how seeking real peace and joy and purpose in all those things are going, would we confidently say, “it’s going well”?

I can say through my experience of seeking of peace in approval from people or seeking joy in trying to perform at a certain level that I never find the deepest contentment and rest that my soul is craving through seeking peace and joy in those places. But when I have sought the Lord, I have found peace. When I have knocked at His door, I discovered the door that leads to joy. When I have asked Him, He has answered me with hope. When I have sought His face in trust, I have discovered a confidence that was deeply rooted. You were made for all the peace and love and purpose that you are seeking, but you will only find it in the way you were designed to when you seek the One who made you, when you seek the One who is the Good Shepherd and who promises that in Him, you lack no good thing (Psalm 23:1). We were all made to worship, but until we wholeheartedly worship the Lord, we will not find what our souls are after.

District news

District Three presents annual meeting minutes

The District Three Annual Meeting was called to order by President Lori Pace (154) at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Lodge 25, Ennis. Flag Bearers Madison Holland (25) and Morgan Oliver (66) led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth motto. District Three and State Mr. SPJST Miles Jones (154), State Miss SPJST Bailee Beckendorf, State Junior Miss SPJST Tynlee Beckendorf (both from Lodge 47, Seaton in District Two) were introduced by President Pace (154). Then President Pace (154) recognized District Three Royalty - Junior Mr. SPJST Everett McAdams (66), Junior Miss SPJST Morgan Oliver (66), Little Mr. SPJST Luke Holland (25), and Little Miss SPJST June Holland (25).

Lodge 25, Ennis Vice President Arlene West (25) welcomed everyone to the meeting on behalf of the members of Lodge 25. Vice President CarrieAnn Jones (154) welcomed Home Office guests - SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek (24) and wife Joan (24) and District Three Director John Engelke (66) and wife Diana (66). Vice President Jones (154) called on Mr. SPJST Miles Jones (154) to pray for the members who were lost last year and their surviving family members. Milestone Members were also recognized at this time.

The next agenda item was to introduce the nominating committee, auditing committee, and contest judges. President Pace (154) introduced the nominating committee CarrieAnn Jones (154), Candice Oliver (66), and Lynda Novak (84); the auditing committee Diana Engelke (66), Michael Galler (66), and Cherri Petr (84); and contest judges Arlene West (25), Joan Vanicek, and Becky Beckendorf (47).

The next order of business was the secretary and treasurer reports. Mary Steinman (154) made a motion to accept the minutes from the last meeting as printed in the Vestnik. Lynda Novak (84) mentioned two corrections that needed to be made to the minutes. Vicki Sims (84) is not on the By-Law Committee, and the District Three Fun Day was at the Czech Slovak Heritage Day at Sokol Dallas, not at the State Fair as printed. These corrections were made, and Kay Lynn Kovar

(25) seconded the motion, and it was passed. Treasurer Mary Steinman (154) then gave her report.

The meeting was turned over to the youth at 2:22 p.m. Youth President Miles Jones (154) called the meeting to order. Vice President Madison Holland (25), Secretary Morgan Oliver (66), and Reporter Layne Oliver (66) were all present. There was discussion about camp, which will be from June 19 to June 23 at Camp Kubena. Registration is open until May 1. The youth have $586.26 in their account. Then the youth elected new officers. President is Miles Jones (154), vice president is Levi McAdams (66), Secretary Abigail McAdams (66), and Reporter Madison Holland (25). The youth meeting adjourned at 2:36 p.m.

The next agenda items were committee reports. District Three Governance Committee member Michael Galler (66) prepared a printed Governance Committee report. FAC Jodie McAdams, Sr. (66) gave an FAC report. Next, Diana Engelke (66) gave an audit committee report.

SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek (24) spoke about the upcoming Convention and encouraged everyone to read their Vestnik. He also reported that delegates should be receiving multiple emails about hotel reservations and meals prior to the Convention. President/CEO Vanicek (24) also spoke about the old Corpus Christi trips and the upcoming trip to the Nebraska Czech Festival. He also spoke about two new sales personnel who were once active youth members. Then President/CEO Vanicek (24) presented a $250 check to Dana McAdams (66), youth leader of Lodge 66, Waco for the establishment/re-establishment of an active youth club. There were some questions about annuities from the floor that President/CEO Vanicek (24) addressed.

Next, District Three Director John Engelke (66) announced the District Three members who received scholarships this year. He also mentioned the Convention Souvenir Program Book ad deadline and that sponsors are needed for snacks and treats during the convention. Director Engelke (66) also mentioned the lodge incentives program awards for District Three lodges. He reminded delegates about the May 4 online delegate meeting at 10 a.m. Delegates should have received a link from the Home Office.

There was no old/previous business. Under new business, Dana McAdams (66) and CarrieAnn Jones (154) presented information about Operation Christmas Child and the gift boxes that are part of the caring challenges later this year. Samples were displayed and questions were answered about where to get supplies and how to deliver boxes to be processed. President/CEO Vanicek (24) then thanked everyone for all of their fraternal activities and events. Director Engelke (66) suggested that in the future District Three meetings, we may need to rethink the $1,000 hosting lodge payment. Since our meetings have gotten shorter, we are no longer having a meal, and the district is receiving funds from the Home Office based on meeting attendance, we may need to reduce how much we give to the hosting lodges in subsequent meetings.

FAC McAdams (66) announced the number of members present today from each attending lodge. There was one member from Lodge 180, Burleson; two from Lodge 183, Arlington; five from Lodge 84, Dallas; eight from Lodge 154, Fort Worth; 16 from Lodge 25, Ennis; five members from other districts or the Home Office; and 21 members from Lodge 66, Waco. The total was 53 present.

Prizes were then presented to the youth members who participated in the rock contest. Steinman (154) presented a $1,000 check to Lodge 25, Ennis for hosting today’s meeting. The winners of

the adult rock contest all donated their winnings back to the district fund.

Lynda Novak (84) mentioned that October 13, 2024, will be the Czech Slovak Heritage Day at Sokol Dallas. Dana McAdams (66) made a motion to make this our District Three Fun Day for 2024. The motion, seconded by Mary Steinman (154), was passed.

Douglas Galler (66) spoke about being asked to be the Convention Chair, and he is hoping for support from the District Three members.

Many members were lucky enough to win door prizes provided by the Home Office, and youth members received a piggy bank and a rubber ball from Director Engelke (66).

District Six presents annual meeting minutes

The District Six Annual Meeting and Social was held on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at St. John’s Parish Hall in El Campo, Texas. Lodge 30, Taiton cohosted the event with District Six. A total of 65 members and guests from six lodges were present. All officers were present.

Registration and social began at 11 a.m. with a bucket raffle and a 50/50 cash raffle. At noon, President/CEO Brian Vanicek said the blessing for the meal. A delicious chicken spaghetti, green beans, and salad meal was served. Delicious desserts were provided for everyone to enjoy. Members brought a variety of

items for the bucket raffle.

President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order at 12:51 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance was recited by membership. A moment of silence was observed for our deceased members. President Joe Siptak welcomed everyone to the annual meeting and social. He thanked everyone for coming out on this beautiful day. Also, thank you to Lodge 30 for co-hosting and providing the delicious meal.

Written reports were presented to the membership at time of registration from our District Six Director, SPJST Senior Living Centers, treasurer, secretary, and Governance Committee member. The cemetery report was presented by Johnny Hoffman with only the Velehrad Cemetery remaining under our care. The Home Office is working on signage to post at the cemetery to advertise lots for sale.

Lodge 30 President Yvonne Marcaurele welcomed everyone to the meeting. She also thanked representatives from the Home Office for attending and her dad for attending the meeting.

Second Vice President Crystal Bacak introduced District Six meeting special guests—President/CEO Brian Vanicek; State Fraternal Director Frank Horak; Territory Manager Kerry Herrington; District Six Director Annie Vahalik and husband Philip; Honorary District Six Director/ Audit Committee member Karen Kaspar; District Six Youth Counselor/Governance Committee member Lisa Bubela; Cemetery/Audit Committee members Janie and David Bucek; Cemetery/Nominating Committee member Johnny Hofmann; Nominating Committee member Linda Henderson; Miss SPJST Bailee Beckendorf; and Junior Miss SPJST Tynlee Beckendorf.

District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela reported that she had 17 youth present for the meeting and that they were working on coloring for Veterans appreciation and making bird feeders with pine cones and bird seed. Camp registration deadline is May l. Summer camp at Camp Kubena will be June 19 to 23 with lots of new activities planned for this year at camp. State Youth Showcase will be July 26 and 27 at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple. Lisa Reck was introduced as the new youth leader for Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje.

Correspondence was read.

Treasurer Marjorie Treumer presented the printed copy of her report. Linda Henderson made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as presented, seconded

by Karen Kaspar. Motion passed, and the treasurer’s report was accepted.

State Fraternal Director Frank Horak thanked the members for attending. He reported on a couple of Lunch & Learn programs for lodge officers. If lodges need anything, please contact the Home Office. He distributed name tags to the lodge officers who were present in appreciation for all they do to promote SPJST in their lodge and community.

Lisa Bubela presented the Governance Committee report in writing. The deadline for submitting by-law recommendations for the June convention has passed.

President/CEO Brian Vanicek thanked the membership for their devoted service. SPJST works with very nice people; and he enjoys working with Director Annie Vahalik. SPJST has shown an increase in revenue over the last year. 2023 was a very positive year for SPJST financially. There has been an increase in annuities due to increase in interest rates. SPJST works to take care of families and their communities. More media advertising is taking place. There are new, young sales representatives from Snook and Needville. He said it was good to have young sales agents with a background in SPJST.

Some restructuring has taken place with the reassignment of lodges. We now have 77 lodges in SPJST with 63 of them that are currently active. A total of 48 scholarships will be awarded in 2023. SPJST supports several organizations like Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center and the SPJST Foundation. The Czech Heritage Museum is strong with its Night at the Museum events. They are also working on redeveloping space in the basement of the Home Office. Flyers were handed out for the August 2 SPJST trip to the Wilber, Nebraska, Czech festival. More trips are planned for the future. The Czech Republic trip last fall was a success and a good trip. He thanked District Six for welcoming him for the visit and sent greetings from his wife, Joan.

Territory Manager Kerry Herrington thanked the district for having him present. He is excited to have new sales agents in the territory and is looking for more good talented sales agents to join. He also presented membership drive cards for lodges to be able to earn extra incentives.

District Six Director Annie Vahalik appreciated everyone for being there. She thanked Lodge 30, Taiton for being

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Sister Jeanette Beseda. Treasurer Sister Peggy Dobecka provided the treasurer’s report and was approved as given. Sister Jeanette provided the FAC report. April’s Caring Challenge project was Nourishing Nature. The suggestion to donate money to the bird habitat at Waco Zoo was agreed upon by all present. May’s focus will be Community Clean-up. A decision was made to clean up cemetery plots of past Lodge 6 officers and honor them with our efforts and new flowers. Sister Jeanette reported that by participating in all the Caring Challenges last year, our lodge was given the highest-available incentive award from the Home Office. Sister Jeanette reported that get well cards were sent to Don Urbanovsky, Bobby Dobecka, and Raymond Joe Hromadka. Sympathy card was sent to Nancy Polansky.

Hall Manager Sister Peggy provided information on the lodge bookings for May and June, as many family reunions will be held at our lodge this summer. See the last section of this Vestnik to review the upcoming events.

Old Business

A trustee meeting was held April 12 and discussion reported regarding the lodge picnic raffle tickets. Deadline is the end of May. Decisions were made

about the picnic menu, plate cost, and a change to serving time. Sister Peggy reported on a contractor’s bid to update cosmetic issues in the hall and that was agreed by membership. She also reported the bid for outside guttering will be presented at the next meeting. Water heater for kitchen has been purchased and will be installed before the picnic.

New Business

The July 21 Lodge 6 picnic preparation continues. Raffle ticket printing is the priority now. Decisions were made on appointing new audit committees to audit lodge’s bank accounts for 2023. Brother Bobby reported on hall updates and needed safety purchases for maintaining the building. He also reported doing research on the purchase of a new mobile unit for the lodge to use for Westfest, as well as needed for use at our annual picnic. Sister Jeanette listened to an SPJST webinar and reported that instructions about the upcoming SPJST Convention will be sent to our representatives.

May birthdays were celebrated by Sister Lou Blahuta and Sister Jeanette Beseda.

Name drawn for the progressive door prize was John Padilla, and he was not present. Attendance door prizes were awarded to Peggy Dobecka, Pam Urbanovsky, and Don Urbanovsky.

Lodge 24, Cyclone: Take a trip down memory lane with Vrazels’ Tribute Band

Lodge 24, Cyclone – better known as Flag Hall – is once again proud to present a dance featuring the Vrazels’ Tribute Band on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

Doors, kitchen, and bar will open at 12 noon. Lodge 25, Ennis hosts successful events

Lodge 25, Ennis has had a busy month beginning with our eclipse event held Thursday, April 4 to Monday, April 8. A big thanks to all our attendees and volunteers for making this event a once in a lifetime spectacular experience for our lodge and community. Congratulations to Charlie Pouzar, who won the big “Ring of Fire” prize of $5,000. David Culbreth won $3,000, Raquel Rivera won $2,000 with Ronnie Dlabaj, Sissy Pruitt, and Wesley Honza taking home $100. Thanks to all who supported our fundraiser!

At the monthly meeting on Thursday, April 11, everyone enjoyed a taco salad meal prepared by Betty. Thank you! Members were reminded that we are hosting the District Three Annual Meeting on April 28; summer camp registration deadline is May 1; and local lodge scholarship applications are due May 31.

March Activities

Lodge 48, Beyersville hosted a community garage sale and fish fry drivethru on Friday, March 8, 2024, and it was well received by the community. The youth club also hosted the dessert/bake sale during this event. Membership voted to make this an annual activity and added to the calendar for the second Saturday, March 7, 2025, at Lodge 48.

Members were served a taco dinner prior to the adult lodge meeting. After reports to the membership were read, the secretary also read and recognizes any Milestone Members in attendance. Robert Leshikar was present and recognized for 75 years.

The membership discussed plans for future social events in June and October. Plans for the annual fundraiser on August 17 were also discussed.

The April meeting of Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President Douglas Galler at 5:32 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bellmead. During the roll call of officers, Second Vice President/Guide Michael Galler was ab-

sent. Present were 10 adult members and one youth.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes from the March meeting. Ronald Neumann made a motion to accept the minutes as read, and Diana Engelke seconded the motion. The motion was passed. In correspondence, Dana had received an insurance report and some transfer request forms from the Home Office. Diana had received an invitation to the World Hunger Relief Anniversary Tour. Youth Club Report

Dana then gave a youth club report. The youth met on Friday, March 29 at 11:30 a.m. at Peter Piper Pizza for their March meeting. Before the meeting started, the youth created thank you cards for veterans and military personnel to be distributed as part of the March Caring Challenge. Then the youth enjoyed the salad and pizza buffet together. After eating, the youth played games together in the game room. Next, the youth chose from an assortment of donated craft items to work on for the upcoming State Youth Showcase.

After the meeting, the youth and adults went to VFW Hall 6008 in Hewitt to distribute thank you cards for our March Caring Challenge.

The next youth club meeting will be April 28 in Ennis at the District Three

Next, Diana gave the treasurer’s report. The lodge received $2,000 from the Home Office for our lodge incentive award in 2023. The youth club received $1,160 for their incentive award in 2023. John gave an update of District Three events. Diana wrote a check to Dana for the youth award to be put with the youth club funds.

In old business, Dana mentioned the possibility of the lodge paying for the youth to attend camp. The discussion was tabled until later. The March donation was delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Temple by John and Diana Engelke.

In new business, there was discussion about the Convention and the online delegates’ meeting on Saturday, May 4 at 9 a.m. John and Douglas both spoke about Convention news. The lodge decided to purchase a full page ad for the Convention Souvenir Program Book. Dana made the motion to do a full page ad. The motion was seconded by Ronald Neumann and passed. There was discussion about the appearance of the ad. The lodge officers will be featured in the ad with a patriotic theme for the backdrop.

The April donation will go to help establish the new American Legion Post 585 in Salado. That motion was made by Jodie, Sr., seconded by Thomas Galler, and passed.

Next Meeting—May 20

The May meeting will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bellmead on May 20 at 5:30 p.m. Then John mentioned many of the upcoming District Three and state events.

John won the 100 percent pot of $7, and Dana won the door prize. Sales Agent Randy House spoke about insurance sales and also the new sales incentive program.

Diana made a motion to adjourn, and Jodie seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned at 7:23 p.m.

Lodge 81, Needville reports on April meeting

SPJST Lodge 81, Needville held its monthly meeting on Sunday, April 21, 2024. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Leon Anhaiser. All officers answered the roll call except Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her minutes from the March meeting, and they were approved as read. President Vincent Newman read Bradley Stavinoha’s treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. President Vincent Newman also read the special funds report, and some changes were asked to be made to that report.

Under old business, President Vincent Newman announced that he did not hear anything about the bids on the air conditioning units. He also mentioned that we need to see about getting new eight-foot LED light bulbs for the hall. He said he will install them if someone buys them. Calvin Lamensky volunteered that he will look into purchasing some.

Under new business, President Vincent Newman read a letter about the lodge incentive award from State Fraternal Director Frank Horak.

The SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Scholarship Committee was proud to present a $2,000 scholarship to Anahi Jasmine Guerrero at the May meeting. Anahi will graduate from Middle College High School at HCC Fraga as class Valedictorian. She is a member of the Student Council, head of Senior Activities, and an active SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club member. You can see Anahi every Thursday night running the popcorn booth at bingo. Her proud family include parents Vanessa and Sergio Guerrero, aunts Ana Latigo and Sandra Latigo, grandparents Josefina and Juan Latigo, and many cousins who are all members of Lodge 88.

Anahi will attend the University of St. Thomas majoring in electrical engineering this fall. In her essay, she wrote, “With technology being so prominent, it is pretty rare for people to collectively join hands. I plan on maintaining the SPJST ideals in college by joining other organizations that allow me to make my new campus an accepting and inviting environment.”

Vice President Lynda Novak then reported on graduating seniors who received scholarships, The Fraternal Council, and Czech Heritage Day plans. She said a meeting for Czech Heritage Day is being scheduled before July to continue with preparations for the celebration.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Vicki Sims discussed the upcoming 2024 Caring Challenges; for June, we will be collecting pop-tabs. For the future months, we will be working on the caring challenges with the themes “Supplying Success” and “Teacher Tribute.”

Lodge 142, Houston hosts successful District Five spring day

Dear Readers,

Lodge 142, Houston had its meeting on Sunday, April 21, 2024, in conjunction with the District Five family spring fun day. SPJST Lodge 142 hosted the district meeting.

The day was filled with fun games of bingo, cornhole, and contests for children. There were door prizes and a great attendance. The delicious meal served was sausage, potatoes, and sauerkraut. Thanks to our wonderful kitchen cookers Dorothy Pflughaupt, Barbara Linney-Gonzalez Dennis Hermis, and Keith Kieschnick.

A beautiful memorial service was presented by Pat Schleider and District Five Youth.

Lodge 180, Burleson visits nursing home

For our “Seeds of Caring Challenge,” Lodge 180, Burleson members visited the Alvarado Meadows Nursing Home in Alvarado, Texas, and delivered a donation of 108 pairs of hospital socks for the elderly. Members walked around and visited with the residents and one of our members, Red Kelly, who now resides there. The Home was very appreciative of the sock donation. The residents enjoyed the interaction with us as we handed the socks out personally to many of them. The experience was fulfilling for all of us; we plan to visit again soon.

Tips on choosing a college major

Choosing a major can be challenging for students who have various interests and/or did well in multiple subjects in high school. The good news is that once a major is chosen, it isn’t set in stone. Many students change their majors as they are exposed to different coursework in college. When choosing a major, students should weigh various factors to find a course of study that suits their interests and career goals. Here are a few ideas for choosing a major.

● Don’t be pressured by family. Some students simply choose “the family business” route and select the same school and major as one or both of their parents.

● Select a subject you enjoy. You do not want to be slugging through the next four or more years of school studying topics that bore you.

● Research a related industry. Investigate which jobs have higher rates of openings and compare other factors like

earning potential. While the goal is not simply to select the major that will lead to a job with the highest earning potential, you should consider majors that will lead to jobs that are stable and offer growth potential.

● Determine how rigorous coursework will be as some majors feature more rigorous coursework than others. If you know that marathon study sessions and lots of research or writing projects are going to lead to extensive stress, it is probably best to consider another course of study.

● Check in with your academic advisor. Academic advisors can guide you by offering career assessment quizzes and going over your grades.

● Delay the decision. If you truly do not know what you want to study, enroll in school undeclared. This will give you a chance to explore some general education “core” classes and feel out a school. (metroservice)

Ben and Martha Trcalek were longtime members of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor and residents of Cooks Point where they engaged in cattle ranching. his law degree in 1912 and promptly went about opening his law office in Rosenberg. A champion of community causes, he was elected Judge of Fort Bend County in 1918. A tireless supporter of civic causes, Brother Chernosky was also an outspoken advocate for an independent Czechoslovak nation. In 1929, Texas Governor Moody selected Judge Chernosky as one of the first nine members of the newly established State Board of Education. Brother Chernosky and his wife, Vlasta Foyt Chernosky, were married in 1912 and had four children, Charles Henry Jr, Juanita Eulalia, Joyce Clarina, James Eugene. Brother Chernosky passed away in 1963.

* Ben F. Trcalek, Jr. Scholarship

Ben F. Trcalek, Jr. was a rancher, businessman, investor and civic leader. A native of Bryan, Texas, Mr. Trcalek was a graduate of Texas A&M University and a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. An avid sports enthusiast and a past football coach, Mr. Trcalek was a board member and past treasurer of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, life member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and a strong supporter of the Texas A&M 12th Man Foundation.

* Bessie Bessie Petr Scholarship

Bessie Petr Bessie Petr was the longtime and devoted youth leader and District Youth Counselor of SPJST District Three. She was extremely active in SPJST and served as the Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Leader for 63 years. Generations of children grew into young adults under her guidance, and lovingly referred to her as Mama Bessie. A devout Catholic and member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Bessie was known throughout the Greater Dallas region for culinary skills and Bessie’s Catering.

Birdie Hilsher Pech Scholarship

Birdie Hilsher Pech of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston was a driving force behind SPJST’s Youth Movement in the early 1950s. In a Věstník column that Sister Pech wrote in 1953, she says, “If you think that the grass is just a little greener on the other side of the fence, better think twice. Our SPJST has all of the green grass. It is up to us to keep it watered now and keep it growing bigger and better all the time. Keep our youth and keep them entertained for a greater future of our SPJST, for without them, we would perish as grass would die without water.”

Cyrill “Sid” Pokladnik Scholarship

A successful businessman and lifelong SPJST supporter, Cyrill Pokladnik served as President of Lodge 84, Dallas, District Three President, Director of the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, a founding Director of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, and for 32 years as District Three Director. In addition to his involvement with SPJST, Mr. Pokladnik served as President of the Texas Fraternal Congress and as President of the National Fraternal Congress of America Fraternal Section.

* Denisse Wuensche Scholarship

Denisse Wuensche of SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville loved helping children and teaching them new things. She loved volunteering and serving as the Youth Club Leader and Camp Counselor. An active member of Taylor Brethren Church, Denise was also a Sunday School Teacher, Brethren Youth Fellowship Sponsor, Junior Sermon Leader, and Vacation Bible School Teacher.

Victorick Family Scholarship

The Victorick Family Scholarship honors the memories of Janice and Ashley Victorick, wife and son of longtime SPJST District One Director Donnie Victorick of Snook. A loving wife and a devoted mother to daughter, Melissa and son, Ashley, Sister Janice passed away in 2021. Helping to care for others, working to make a positive difference, and cooking were the things she so loved to do. Sister Janice was the rock for Brother Donnie and supported him in all facets of his career. Sister Janice’s unwavering support and belief in Donnie built him up to believe in himself and the causes that he continues to champion. Brother Ashley, who passed away in 2022, was a lifelong member of SPJST and in recent years served as District Five President and as Secretary of the SPJST Finance Committee. As a member of Lodge 88, Houston, Brother Ashley served in many key roles including Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Treasurer, and as a member of the Bingo Committee.

Charles H. Chernosky Scholarship

Born in 1885 in Rocky Creek near Bellville, Charles H. Chernosky served as SPJST President from 1925 to 1948. An honor graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Brother Chernosky helped organize the University’s first Czech club, Čechie, in 1909. Brother Chernosky received

Edward L. Marek Scholarship

Edward L. Marek was the sixth President of SPJST and service in that capacity from 1949 through 1969. Prior to that, Mr. Marek served as Vice President from 1945 through 1949, and as Financial Secretary from 1933 to 1943.

Ernest A. Wentrcek, Sr. of Bryan was a founding member and President of SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station and a 20year member of the SPJST Finance Committee. Mr. Wentrcek attended Texas A&M University and served as Associate Director for Business Affairs of Texas Engineering Extension Service. He owned two family businesses: W&W General Contractors, Inc. and W&W Real Estate Company and was one of the organizers of the First Federal Savings and Loan in Bryan.

* Frank E. Klinkovsky, Sr.

Scholarship

Known for always being concerned about others, Frank E. Klinkovsky was a man of service to his country, community, and family. He spent most of his adult life serving SPJST as District Youth Counselor, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Life Insurance Agent, was on the Board of Directors as District Two Director. He also held many positions at Lodge 47, Seaton - Star Hall, where he was a life-long member.

* Gladys Yates Scholarship

An active member of Lodge 66, Waco, Gladys Yates was a beloved SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator who served from 2001 until her untimely death in 2004. As a testament to her fraternal commitment, Ms. Yates also served as District Three President and as District Three Assistant Youth Counselor for many years. =

Helen Fusig & King B. Hegwood Memorial Scholarship

King B. and Helen Fusig Hegwood were active members of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston for many years. King was a member of the Men’s Club, and for more than 40 years, he popped popcorn at the SPJST hall on Thursday night bingos. This earned him the title of “Popcorn King.” Helen served the Home Office as District Five State Field Representative from 1989 to 1998. She also served in local lodge, district, and state roles throughout her 75-year membership. Helen was an award-winning sales agent for many years, receiving the prestigious Million Dollar Producer Award each year from 1995 to 1999 and in 2001 and 2002. She will also be remembered for her beautiful voice with the Lodge 88 Czech Chorus. =

Joe B. Hejny Scholarship

Joe B. Hejny served as Vice President of SPJST from 1956 until his death in 1978. Mr. Hejny’s passion for SPJST and its fraternal mission fueled Societal growth during his tenure as head of SPJST’s marketing and sales area. It was during Mr. Hejny’s service to SPJST that the

SPJST Youth Program became a fully-integrated component of the SPJST’s statewide fraternal outreach programming.

Johnnie R. Krizan served as Director of SPJST District Three from 1997 until his untimely death in 2014. A member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood and graduate of Baylor University, Mr. Krizan also served as President of Lodge 6, Cottonwood and was a top-producing SPJST sales representative for more than 40 years. He was a strong community booster, an avid Texas Rangers fan, and a member of the Baylor University Alumni Association.

J.R. Kubena Scholarship

Known as the “Father of the SPJST,” J. R. Kubena was a member of Lodge 1, Fayetteville and served as SPJST Secretary from 1897 until his death in 1938, administering the affairs of SPJST out of a single room in his general store in Fayetteville. A civic leader with a keen sense of obligation to others, Mr. Kubena served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives for three terms - in 1903, 1905 and 1907; and he served for a term as mayor of Fayetteville. He was also a member of the governing body - today known as the Board of Governors - at what was then Texas A&M College.

* Larry W. Pflughaupt Memorial Scholarship

Larry W. Pflughaupt was a 60-year member of SPJST and served as SPJST District Five Director from 2000 to 2016. His affinity for SPJST goes back to when he was 15 and was honored as the first Prince of Lodge 88, Houston - a royal title which he earned at an early age and one which set the standard for what was to follow. A member of Lodge 88, Houston, Mr. Pflughaupt served as lodge president and along with his wife, Dorothy, was an avid supporter of the SPJST Youth Program at the lodge, district and state levels.

Myles Marek Scholarship

Myles Marek was a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and retired from Sun Oil in 1972 as a senior gas coordinator. Both Myles and his wife, Clarice, were strong supporters of the SPJST Scholarship Program.

Nick A. Morris Scholarship

Nick A. Morris served as SPJST President from 1969 until 1984. Prior to that, he served as Editor of SPJST Věstník for six years - selected for the position by the Supreme Lodge after the death of Editor L.O. Hosek. It was during his tenure as Editor that Mr. Morris began the SPJST library collection

* Otto Hanus Scholarship (2)

A member of Lodge 66, Waco, Otto Hanus was the first librarian, archivist and curator of the SPJST Library, Archives, and Museum serving in that capacity from 1971 until his death in 1987. Mr. Hanus earned the admiration and respect of SPJST leadership and membership for the tireless and meticulous care he devoted in overseeing and maintaining SPJST Library, Archives, and Museum collections.

* Ronnie Gene Marek Scholarship

Ronnie Marek grew up on the family farm in Meeks and had a lifelong love of farming and tractors. But after graduating high school he decided to pursue a career in aircraft engineering. He was known for being detail oriented, methodically developing electrical wiring installation solutions across a multitude of production and retrofit aerospace programs. Ron’s fingerprints are on many airframes both commercial and defense most notably the Boeing 777 airliner, Northrop Grumman B-2 bomber and the Lockheed Martin F-16 and F-22 fighter jets. Ron and his wife, Lenese, also volunteered much of their time to the Texas Early Day Tractor and Engine Association of Temple, Texas for more than 20 years, assisting with cleanup and proudly displaying their restored tractors and farm implements. Ronnie also took a keen interest in International Harvester Lone Star Chapter 25 and was involved in chapter activities for more than 20 years.

* Rudy & Maxine Sefci k Benevolent Scholarship

Rudy and Maxine Sefcik - lifelong SPJST members - earned the respect and admiration of SPJST members and the Texas Czech community statewide for their passion in promoting all things Czech. Rudy Sefcik, who was President of Lodge 88, Houston and later, Lodge 54, West, served as SPJST Věstník Editor from 1968 until 1992. Throughout his tenure as Věstník Editor, Rudy’s wife Maxine remained his faithful assistant, providing backup support in the newspaper’s composition. Perpetual community boosters, Rudy and Maxine also served as Master of Ceremonies for Westfest Cultural Entertainment program from its inception. Following Rudy’s passing in 1993, Maxine continued to serve as event Co-Emcee until health reasons prompted her to step down in 2018. As a lasting testament to Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine’s commitment to all things Czech, the Sefcik Amphitheatre on the Westfest fairgrounds is named in their honor.

The SPJST District Six Scholarship is funded annually thanks to the endowment established by the members of SPJST District Six. The scholarship is presented to a graduating senior on the basis of academic stature and activity within the lodge and/or district. Susan Chandler Scholarship

Susan Chandler served as the curator and director of Temple’s Czech Heritage and Museum and Genealogy Center from 2014 until her untimely death on September 4, 2022. Throughout her service to the Museum, Susan not only curated artifacts but also cultivated love-forged friendships and nurtured knowledge. Widely recognized for her passion for Czech history and culture, Susan was also a devoted mother to her four daughters, Grace Anne, Lauren, Marie, and Sarah, and a friend to so many. The daughter of Charles and Retta Chandler, Susan attended Texas A&M and UT-Arlington Universities. Susan shared her talents as a communicator working for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Fort Worth Police Department, and Temple Daily Telegram before establishing her lasting presence at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center.

* Vernell Foyt Scholarship

Vernell Foyt was passionate about volunteering at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and she and her husband, Rudy, shared many “two steps” at the lodge hall before his passing. Vernell was on the Rules and Regulations Committee, Treasurer of the Birthday Club Sisters, Bingo Volunteer, a member of the Swimming Pool Committee and Chairman of the Entertainment Committee. As the head of the Entertainment Committee, Ms. Foyt enjoyed a special relationship with every band that performed at the lodge as well as members of the lodge.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club cleans hall annex for May Caring Challenge

The Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club met on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 1 p.m. For the May charity project Community Cleanup Crusade, the youth cleaned up the annex at Star Hall. Youth swept, took out trash, wiped down counters, and cleaned the bathrooms.

Youth Leader Amber Bartek reminded us that next month, the charity project is Pop-Tab Palooza. We will be meeting at Ronald McDonald House to donate the pop tabs. Youth are welcome to start collecting pop tabs, and they can get household collectors to do it.

The meeting was adjourned when cleaning was completed.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth ready for summer

Dear Vestnik Readers

It is finally May! That means school is almost over! I have finished all of my big tests, too. I had to take two STAAR tests and two end of course tests. Now I only have to complete some projects for the final exam grade.

I also got into National Junior Honor Society this year! I had an induction ceremony and got my certificate last week. My MawMaw and PawPaw drove all the way up here just to watch the ceremony. I am very proud of myself!

It also means summer is near. This is good news because then I can go swimming. There are a lot of things to look forward to this month.

It has been raining a lot lately. I am glad we finally got a break for some nice weather. But the rain was able to fill up our local lakes so that was nice, too. Maybe we will get to go enjoy the lake this year. The State Youth Showcase is right around the corner. I am still thinking about what to do for it, but I know I will come up with something soon. I hope to get higher rankings this year.

Collin McKinney was born on April 17, 1766, in New Jersey, which was a colony of England. He only had six months of proper schooling as a kid because McKinney was providing for his family, while his dad fought in the Revolutionary War. Indians would harass McKinney’s family most of his life. He grew to be six feet tall. McKinney and his first wife had four kids. Only two kids survived, and the mother died also. McKinney remarried and had seven more kids. Early in life, while he was still young, he learned surveying skills. He was a magistrate in Kentucky. He moved to Tennessee and for three years. He helped Senator George W. Campbell with Campbell’s lands while he was away. In 1830, McKinney moved to the Red River area in Texas. He was about 64 years old. McKinney was a Christian man and helped build the first Church of Christ in Texas. Santa Anna, the Mexican dictator, was forcing all Texans to pay taxes and be Catholic. Collin McKinney and other Texans were mad with Santa Anna’s horrible laws and that led to fighting.

Collin McKinney was picked to be a delegate with five other people from around the Red River area. In 1835, fifty-nine delegates from across the Texas area met at Washington on the Brazos. They were meeting during stormy winter weather. The cabin had windows, but no glass because it was unfinished. They put up thin blankets letting in sunlight to help them write and to keep out the cold. Collin McKinney, at 70 years old, was the oldest man of the 59 people. Many people like Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett were supposed to be there, but they were serving at the Alamo. McKinney was put into a group to write the Texas Declaration of Independence with four other people. The five men working on the declaration stayed up all night including McKinney. The next day, knowing the Alamo was under attack, McKinney said, “We do not need to sleep on this. We need to vote now!” It took about an hour to agree and vote on the declaration. It needed a lot of editing before they could send it to Mexico and the Texans. All clapped and cheered that Texas was going to be independent. McKinney re-

wrote the whole declaration in one night. The next morning, everybody signed the declaration including Collin McKinney. McKinney got to keep the ink well, pen, and desk that everyone had used when they signed the declaration. These items were given to McKinney because he was determined to be free from Mexico.

For the next 10 years, Collin McKinney served on the first, second, and fourth congress as a representative. Then the Red River flooded McKinney’s home so he wanted to move to another

The solar eclipse party that was held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple on April 4, 2024 was so much fun. I don’t think I’ve ever danced so much before! Thank you to everyone who attended – and even those who caught a dance with me.

I also attended the District Six Annual Meeting and Social in El Campo on April 14. Thank you guys for letting me pop in and enjoy all the food, laughs, and prizes.

I attended the District One Annual Meeting at Lodge 9, Snook as well. I don’t think I have ever played on a bounce house during a meeting. We also painted rocks and played games. You guys are amazing! Thank you to the youth who shared all the stories with me.

The District Three Annual Meeting was at Lodge 25, Ennis. I received second place with my strawberry painted rock. I enjoyed the ice cream and homemade cream cheese kolaches. It was really good to get to spend the day with my Mr. SPJST Miles Jones. Thank you for the piggy bank and squish ball. Thank you, Bailee Beckendorf 2023-2024 Miss SPJST

part of Texas. For two years, McKinney made 11 trips on horseback, bringing families from Tennessee and Kentucky to Texas earning money to get a land grant. Using this money, he bought the materials to build a new house. He moved to Van Alstyne, where his children were living. He was then able to watch his family grow up to be great leaders, just like him.

When I was at Collin McKinney’s Museum, I saw a replica of McKinney’s portrait. The original portrait was burned or lost so today nobody knows what

Collin McKinney really looked like. I also saw a miniature figure of his house. A tour guide told me that McKinney had the first wooden floors in the area. His museum was full of what their house looked like including a kitchen and bedrooms from long ago. As you can see, the museum and my research taught me that Collin McKinney loved his family and never gave up on Texas.

In Memory of Franklin Elles

Franklin Delano Elles, age 89, died on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

Visitation was Monday, March 18 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Victoria. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors under the auspices of Victoria Veterans Council.

He was born on February 25, 1935, to the late Frank and Stefanie Cermak in Littlefield, Texas, and was raised and adopted by the late Joe and Rosie Hanulik Elles in La Salle. Franklin was very proud of his Czechoslovakian heritage. He learned to speak English in the first grade.

Franklin attended Industrial High School and graduated in 1954. He proudly served with the 4th Armored Division in Germany from 1957 to 1959. He attended Army reunions in Iowa, Missouri, and Tennessee. He was a heavy equipment operator and farmer. After retirement, he continued farming and each year, he raised a big garden, sharing the bounty with family, friends, and neighbors. He was a member of National Farmers Organization, Polka and Waltz Dance Club, and SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria. He served as president of each of these organizations.

Franklin married Lois Jean Kalich on November 17, 1956. They made their home and raised their family in Victoria.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Adolph, Rudy, Joe, and Harry Elles; sisters Tillie Jurcak, Adina Strmiska, Oline Horn, and Narcis Arledge; half-brothers Henry and Walter Adamek; and half-sisters Georgia Doggett, Lillie Brumbelow, and Evelyn Wilcox.

He is survived by his wife Lois of 67 years; children Darla Buccigrossi and husband Mark of La Vernia, Allison Elles of Victoria, and Daryl Elles and wife Aimee of Houston; and grandchildren Kayla Elles, Ryan Elles, Simona

Buccigrossi, and Sara Buccigrossi.

The family encourages memorials to be sent in memory of Franklin to 605 Locust Avenue, Victoria, Texas 77901.

In Memory of Dorothy Gerlich

Dorothy Ann (Pechacek) Gerlich, aka Grandma Dot, age 90, of Arlington, Texas, passed away late Tuesday evening, April 23, 2024, at Medical City Hospital in Arlington.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 1 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elk, with Reverend Harry Dean as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Elk.

Dorothy was born September 16, 1933, in Elk, the daughter of Ben and Angela (Vicha) Pechacek. She was a 1952 graduate of Axtell High School. On January 20, 1953, she was united in marriage to Eugene Gerlich in Elk. Eugene preceded her in death on November 3, 2013. Dorothy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arlington and a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellmead and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elk. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington. She worked for Word, Inc. for 24 years until her retirement. Dorothy enjoyed dancing, especially waltzing with her husband, sewing, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid fan of the Texas Rangers. She loved spending time with her family especially at holiday get-togethers where she would cook for everyone.

Dorothy was also preceded in death by daughter Donna Culliton; brothers Harry “Fuzzy” Pechacek and Daniel Pechacek; sisters-in-law Paulette Pechacek, Frances Gerlich, and Albina Macha; and brother-in-law Vernon Gerlich.

Survivors include daughter Katherine “Kay” Weeks and husband Tom and son-in-law Tim Culliton, all of Arlington; grandchildren Natalie Doland and husband Tony, Nicholas Culliton, Kimberly Williams and husband Paul, Katie Weeks and fiance Jonathan Hamilton, Gena Pogue and husband Bryce, and Tommy Weeks; great-grandchildren Jude, Lilly, Elizabeth, Paul, Sarah, and John Doland and Olan, Harvey, Joanna, and Porter Williams; sister Mildred Steinke and husband Lloyd; sisters-inlaw Liz Pechacek and Carrie Pechacek; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Pallbearers were Jeffrey Pechacek, Tim Pechacek, Ronald Steinke, Bryce Pogue, Jonathan Hamilton, and Paul Williams.

In Memory of Jerry Vojacek

71 years. In 1953, they moved to Baytown where they raised their three children. Jerry and his wife owned Fuller’s Tire Pro.

Jerry loved to talk and never met a stranger. He always had a smile on his face. Besides his family, he loved his ranch and cows. He was a member of the Beefmaster Breeders United since 1984. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and SPJST Lodge 91, San Jacinto.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother; seven sisters; granddaughter; and grandson.

He is survived by wife JoAnn Vojacek; son Mike (Sharon) Vojacek of Beach City; son Darrell (Brenda) Vojacek of Baytown; daughter Pamela “Penny” (Mark) Murphy of Tuscola, Illinoia; eight grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; and one great-greatgranddaughter.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1907 Carolina Ave, Baytown, Texas 77520 for the repairs and remodeling fund.

Jerry A. Vojacek passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at the age of 96. Visitation was Monday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Baytown. A rosary followed at 11 a.m. and a mass at 11:30 a.m. Interment followed in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown. All arrangements are under the care of Navarre Funeral Home. The funeral mass was performed by Reverend Thuc Nguyen. Jerry’s grandsons served as pallbearers.

Jerry was born August 13, 1927, in Nada, Texas, to the late Charles and Mary Vojacek.

He was in the US Air Force from 1946 to 1948 and was stationed in Japan. When he returned, he went to work for Carnation Milk Company. His route included Barry’s Drive In and that is where he met the love of his life, JoAnn Dreymala. They married on June 10,1952, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Victoria. They were married for over

Pardubicka Muzika tours Texas in May

Pardubická Muzika will perform at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton - Star Hall on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, from 7 to 9 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The hall is located east of Temple - 10842 State Hwy 53, Temple 76501. Vítek Formánek lives in East Bohemia, Czech Republic. He has a deep interest in the Royal Air Force (RAF) since 1988. He befriended dozens and dozens of English ex- Guinea Pigs and POWs and has written 11 books about them. He also has written books about punk rock, speedway, film, autograph collecting, homelessness, and handicapped people, with 23 titles so far. He works as a social worker. Formánek has had over 1,500 articles published in the Czech and English media.

Eva Csölleová (1964) lives in Eastern Bohemia, Czech Republic. Along with Formánek, she has co-written 13 books about punk rock, film, the Royal Air Force (RAF), autograph collecting, handicapped people, and homelessness. She is a photographer and many of her photos have been used in her books and publications.

Blinn College offers fall Czech language classes

The Blinn College District will offer three online Czech language courses this fall.

Beginning Czech I and Intermediate Czech I will run August 21 through December 11, 2024. Classes are Monday through Thursday, with Beginning Czech I from 7:45 to 8:50 a.m. and Intermediate Czech I from 8:55 to 9:40 a.m. These courses offer both credit and non-credit options, and class recordings will be available for flexible viewing.

Advanced Czech is a non-credit course held Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:45 p.m. September 10 through November 5.

Textbooks are required for all three courses. Students seeking to earn credit or dual credit in the Beginning and Intermediate Czech courses may be eligible for scholarships. Students taking a course for credit must apply for admission to Blinn.

Thadious Polasek, president of the Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas and a seasoned instructor with more than 35 years of experience teaching Czech at all levels, will teach each course. Blinn is one of only two higher education institutions in Texas that offer Czech language classes for college credit and continuing education.

The Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus also offers Czech language dual credit to high school students.

Kolache Klobase Festival: June 8 in East Bernard

This is the 33rd year for the Czech Kolache Klobase Festival scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Riverside Hall in East Bernard, located about 45 miles southwest of Houston on Highway 90-A. This event brings people together to enjoy good music, good food, and to celebrate ethnic heritage and culture.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. and continuing nonstop until 8 p.m., this year’s festival again features a first-rate lineup of entertainers – Ennis Czech Boys, Czech & Then Some, Dujka Brothers, Red Ravens, and Al Sulak’s Country Sounds. The three-band concert at 4:30 p.m. inside the hall will feature Czech & Then Some, Dujka Brothers, and Red Ravens. A kolache eating contest sponsored by the KJT State Office is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the pavilion.

Festival admission is $10 per person - children 12 and under are admitted free. Admission fee covers all entertainment and music provided by bands and entertainers in the hall and outdoor pavilion. Parking is free, and there is plenty of handicapped parking. Massive water fans will cool the pavilion. Arts and crafts booths will be located both inside and outside the hall with crafts and goods of every kind. A silent auction will be held. Shop for all types of hand-crafted items, jewelry, and clothing. Win something sweet in the cake walk. Buy drawing tickets to win great prizes including beautiful handmade quilts.

A plate lunch will be available for purchase - sausage, barbecue chicken, sauerkraut, and other trimmings. Sausage and chicken will be prepared on site the morning of the festival. Serving begins at 11 a.m. Drive-thru plates-togo will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hundreds of kolaches for sale throughout the day, and hamburgers and sausage sandwiches available in the afternoon.

Czech costumes are encouraged and welcomed. The Po.L.K. of A. are also urged to attend in their “red and whites”. A moving flag tribute is scheduled at 3 p.m. and will recognize attending armed services veterans, followed by a grand march ff]eaturing the Czech and festive costumes on parade.
