Farewell to Rob Clift
It is with a mix of gratitude and sadness that we announce the departure of Rob Clift, Executive Director of Camp Kubena, at the beginning of August. Rob’s leadership and dedication have been instrumental in creating an outdoor experience at Camp Kubena that positively impacts the lives of many. His commitment to fostering a sense of community, leadership, and connection with nature has left an indelible mark on everyone who has had the privilege of attending the camp.
Rob’s recent announcement of his resignation is bittersweet. While we are excited for him and his next adventure with Cassandra in Oregon, we will deeply miss his presence and guidance. His heartfelt reflections on this year’s SPJST Summer Camp, where he served as a camp leader alongside his children, Colby and Sable, highlight the profound influence he has had on both campers and leaders. Rob’s passion and enthusiasm have been a driving force behind the camp’s spirit, and we are grateful for his contributions. We wish Rob and his family all the best in their new adventure and look forward to seeing them return for future summer camps.

From Funny Quotes to Fond Memories: A Reader’s Reflection
Ms. Zavodny,
Just a note of thanks for publishing “Funny Quotes about being a Senior” in the July 8, 2024, Věstník issue, page 35. A little laughter goes a long way to improve the life of a senior or anyone of any age. The article also brought back memories. In the past, Mr. Knape’s poems were fun for all ages. In my
mother’s day, the Věstník published one poem per issue. Mama clipped the ones she really liked for herself or to send to loved ones. One of my old favorites is “Lamps” by Lon Woodrum published in the November 17, 1971, Věstník issue on the front page. You can see it and others in old copies of the Věstník which are available at the Portal to Texas History website and under “News” at spjst.org.

I met a stranger in the night Whose lamp had ceased to shine. I paused and let him light His lamp from mine. A tempest sprang up later on And shook the world about. And when the wind was gone My lamp was out! But back to me the stranger came — His lamp was glowing fine! He held the precious flame And lighted mine!

It’s Your Life
Have You Made a “To Be” List
We live off lists. There’s the shopping list so we don’t forget anything. I have my task list to prioritize work. There’s my honey-do list, which my wife keeps full. And then, there’s my to-do list so I don’t overlook anything. Lists are everywhere. But the most important list is one many have probably never think to make: the “to be” list.
I must admit, my “to be” list gets a little short sometimes, but when I focus on it, my life changes for the better. It’s a list that helps you become less stressed, more aware, and a better all-around person. It will make you happier. The people around you will be happier. The world will become brighter. You will start seeing more positives and less of the negatives our society throws at us. Your “to be” list may be the most fulfilling list you will ever put together. But it is not an easy list to follow. Unlike a to-do list, you don’t cross anything off. In fact, if done right, it gets bigger and bigger.
Once you master it, you will find you have developed great habits. You naturally become more aware of situations. You make better decisions (although we will still never be perfect). We start seeing solutions instead of excuses. To help you out, here is part of my “to be” list:
1. To be faithful to God
2. To be faithful to my family, no matter our differences
3. To be sensitive to others’ situations
4. To be more attentive to my wife (I probably fail at this more than I should)
5. To be looking for solutions instead of excuses
6. To be a person who will help anywhere I can
Start a “to be” list today and watch your life change.
“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” —Helen Keller
My door is always open, figuratively, and literally.

State Fraternal Director posts August updates
Just as June zipped by, so has the month of July. I hope everyone enjoyed celebrating Independence Day on July 4. SPJST celebrated by entering our float in the Belton Fourth of July Parade. Everyone attending had a good time waving to the families lining the streets of Belton, Texas.
Teachers and our youth will be heading back to school in August. Another thing that comes to mind in August is Westfest, which will start Friday, August 30 and continue through Sunday, September 1. Lodge 6, Cottonwood will have its food booth at the fairgrounds again this year. If you find yourself in West for the festival, make sure to visit their booth and purchase a sausage potato boat with sauerkraut or a sausage sandwich. You will be very happy you did.
We are very excited about what their future holds for them. November will mark a momentous occasion for our family as we prepare to embrace our new roles as grandparents! We are elated to welcome a sweet baby girl into our family and spoil her with love.
State Youth Showcase
This Weekend in Temple
We are excited to welcome all SPJST youth and their families to Temple this weekend for the State Youth Showcase, which will be held at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center, 3303 North Third Street, Temple.
Connie and I had a big family event on June 9. Our son, Jacob, married his best friend, MaKayla, in a double ring ceremony outside of Palmer. After a brief encounter at his sister’s apartment while studying for finals, they both began working at Camp Kubena two weeks later. They began dating after returning to college in Nacogdoches.
Participants and parents will be receiving an email explaining what to expect when they arrive in Temple on Friday, July 26. The letter will have information about the check-in process, special category contest, and the Lions Junction Family Water Park social on Friday evening. Lions Junction Family Water Park has been reserved for SPJST, and this is an opportunity for our youth to have some fun before the competition on Saturday. The email will also include information on Saturday’s program.
• Friday, July 26: Check-in for creative arts, talent, and royalty starts at 1:30 p.m. There will be a royalty stage walk and talent sound check starting at 3:30 p.m. The Special Category competition begins at 4 p.m. Once youth have completed their special category projects, they are free to leave the Mayborn Center and settle into their hotel room before dinner at Lions Junction park (located outside the water park) at 7 p.m. Lions Junction Family Water Park will open for SPJST at 7:30 p.m.
Members: You are cordially invited to attend the family fun social at Lions Junction on Friday evening from 7 to 9:30 p.m. A hot dog dinner will be served to Showcase participants and their families from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Then, enjoy an evening of swimming, waterslides, and the lazy river.
• Saturday, July 27: Doors open at 8:30 a.m. The opening ceremony is at
9 a.m. Individual and group talent competition follows. We will have a break after talent until royalty begins at 1 p.m. The snack bar will be open throughout the day, and Burgers & More food truck will be outside the Mayborn Center providing lunch to those who may not want to drive to local restaurants. (Note that the Chickfil-A near the Mayborn Center is currently closed and undergoing renovations after the May tornado.) The awards ceremony will follow the royalty competition.
Country Store
Visit the Country Store on Saturday between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to purchase dessert entries (pound cakes) and homemade Christmas ornaments made by our youth. Christmas ornaments will be available for $10, and pound cakes will be $15 each. All money goes directly to the youth.

Youth attending the Showcase on Saturday will have an opportunity to participate in a community service project that will benefit local veterans. Art supplies will be available for youth to decorate special bags. Donations of individual snacks (crackers, cookies, trail mix, etc.) will be gladly accepted for the bags, too.
2024 Incentives Program –Third Quarter Entries
We appreciate the attention to detail demonstrated by our lodge officers in recording fraternal and community hours during the second quarter, ensuring the success of the incentive program.

giance and the SPJST motto, followed by a moment of silence for departed members. Flag Bearer Irene Peterson reported 15 members, three youth, and one guest in attendance.
The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Jeanette Beseda. Treasurer Peggy Dobecka provided the treasurer’s report, and both were approved as given. Sister Jeanette provided the fraternal report. June’s SPJST Caring Challenge of collecting aluminum tabs has been competed. The challenge for July will be filling school backpacks. As suggested by two lodge members who work with West ISD, the focus of donations will be tissues, cleaning wipes, EXPO dry erase markers, and Ticonderoga No. 2 pencils. The August challenge, Book Bonanza, will involve a donation of children books and games. Please bring both types of donations to the August meeting.
Per report from the Sunshine Committee, Sister Barbara Hykel asked Sister Jeanette to report a get well card was sent to Dorothy Kucera. Sister Jeanette read correspondence from the Ronald McDonald House, thanking our lodge for a donation, given earlier this year.

An adjusted report was approved by all present.

This purchase would promote our mission to serve Czech food items at Westfest, held on Labor Day weekend and other lodge activities. Much discussion was held, including the work-intensive projects of Westfest. Subsequently, the vote passed to purchase a new food trailer. Sister Jeanette stated the Johnnie Krizan Estate will help contribute toward the purchase of the trailer.

Lodge 180, Burleson member shares memory
I just had a remembrance going way back. Mother and I canned corn every 4th of July. I don’t remember for sure, but I think that maybe Daddy had already brought the corn to the house. We had to shuck the corn, which was the easy part. The hard part was getting all the silks off – those little brownish strings that were on every ear of corn. After that, it was time to cut the corn off the cobb, and then the actual canning started. The jars were put into an oldstyle canner. It was a lot of hard work, but the results were delicious.

Summer Fresh Herbs at SPJST Assisted Living at Lake Travis
by Karen Hodge, Community Relations Advisor SPJST Assisted Living at Lake Travis
SPJST Assisted Living at Lake Travis celebrates summer with the taste of fresh garden herbs, with our Serenity Gardens capturing cool summer breezes. In June, the SPJST Herb Garden was dedicated to honoring the culinary talents of our own Chef Henry (20plus years), pictured at left, and Chef Mo (15 years).
Whether residents and guests are enjoying home-grown basil on bruschetta or pesto on steaming pasta, having fresh ingredients is a core value for daily meal preparation.
“We have fresh produce delivered three times a week,” shared Chef Mo. “It is important that each meal we serve to our residents has the taste and aroma of food prepared in a home kitchen.”
Fresh herbs have a more potent flavor than their dried counterparts and add higher nutritional value. A June 12, 2022, article posted on AARP.org referenced rosemary as a rich source of several antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that may boost the immune
system and improve circulation. According to the article, basil, rosemary, and sage are three of the 10 herbs that can contribute to healthy aging. You can see from our photographs that these three herbs are growing fast in our refreshed raised garden bed.
Now that the raised garden bed is flourishing with herbs, other gardening projects are lining up. In June, several resident activities included planting flowers and vegetable seeds. “A number of teen volunteers, church groups, and Boy Scout troops have expressed future interest in helping build more raised garden beds,” says Morgan McQueen, activities director at SPJST Assisted Living at Lake Travis.
If any SPJST youth members are interested in volunteering at SPJST Assisted Living at Lake Travis, please contact our activities director or visit www.spjstseniorliving.com. For information on availability at SPJST Assisted Living at Lake Travis, call Teresa Brashear 512- 402-0968.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth looks forward to State Youth Showcase
Dear Vestnik Readers,
It is finally July! Camp was really fun. I am glad I went. The best part was the zipline.
Last weekend, I went to Typhoon Texas with my mom, brother, grandma, granddaddy, Uncle William, and Aunt Natalie. That was really fun. I really liked all the big slides. My favorite was The Shootout. In this ride, you stand crossing your arms and legs, a voice says 3, 2, 1 then a trapdoor opens underneath you, and you get dropped down a vertical water slide. It is really fast but super fun. There are also a bunch of big watersides. I already can’t wait to go back. My uncle says next time, we are going to get the Fast Pass so we can skip ahead of the lines.
I am really looking forward to the State Youth Showcase. I hope I win a lot of medals this year. I am also running for royalty. I hope I win at least District Junior Mr. SPJST. Have a good month.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth plays soccer this summer
Dear Vestnik Readers, It is July! Summer vacation is almost over. The State Youth Showcase is coming up. I am doing royalty this year. Wish me luck! I can’t wait to go to Lions Junction, too. That’s going to be fun. I really like the diving board and the slides there.
Since I made it to Select Soccer, I’ve had soccer practices a lot this summer. I’ve had two scrimmages this summer, and it is hot outside! I have to run a mile every other week, too, but I don’t mind because I actually like running! The first time, I ran a mile in 9:01 minutes. My coach also encouraged me to watch more soccer games. I watched Spain versus England in the final Euro Cup game. Spain won 2-1.
There is not a lot to talk about so I guess I’m done telling y’all stuff.

He developed a strong work ethic, even as a small boy growing up, by helping his parents on the farm. As a young man, he served his country by joining the Navy during the Korean War. During that time, he had the privilege of being on a ship that sailed around Alaska.
He loved to tell stories to his grandchildren who called him “Papa Red.” His favorite story to tell was about seeing the polar bears while in Alaska.
He loved to garden and had delicious, home-grown tomatoes and peppers that he would use to make homemade hot sauce for family and friends for several years.
He loved to bowl and would go twice a week to bowl with his lodge friends. He participated in bowling tournaments in the summertime in San Antonio, and the funds raised were donated to various organizations. He was very dedicated to this activity for more than 50 years. Because he was competitive, he enjoyed playing dominoes, 42, and Moon (another domino game).
He was an active member of two fraternal organizations – SPJST and Hermann Sons. In Memory of Jerry Marusak
Jerry Edward Marusak, age 92, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
Rosary and funeral mass were held on April 11 at St. John’s Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ennis, Texas, presided by Father Christopher Eggleton. Rosary began at 9:30 a.m. with mass following at 10 a.m. Kenneth Janousek led the rosary and St. John’s Catholic choir with beautiful Czech language spiritual songs which Jerry loved to hear.
Pallbearers were grandsons Bryant and Jordan Hunter and John Alex Marusak; honoree pallbearers were Josh Tay, Nathan Novy, and Daniel Valek. A celebration of Jerry’s life followed with
a reception at SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis hall.
Jerry was born on August 2, 1931, in the farming community of Bardwell to Louis and Mary Spaniel Marusak and was one of 12 children. He had six sisters and five brothers. The farm that he grew up on is now partially part of the Bardwell reservoir, where his family raised cotton, corn, and cattle. He and his family attended St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, and the children also attended school there in nearby Ennis. His first language was Czech, and he soon learned the English language. He loved the farm life with his siblings. In high school, he met the love of his life, Janie Novy, and following graduation, they married on May 9, 1953.
Jerry attended the University of Dallas Catholic University and University of Texas at Arlington. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and learned the skill of aircraft mechanics. While in the Air Force, Jerry was crew chief on B26 and B29 aircraft and on flying status. He reached the rank of Staff Sargent while serving his country. He worked for a variety of commercial airlines throughout his 45-year career being an aircraft mechanic. His last being with Continental Airlines where he commuted from his home in Ferris to the Houston Hobby Airport.
Jerry and Janie welcomed three children to their family. Jerry enjoyed his Czech heritage, Sunday family visits to Ennis, life on the farm, and his career in aircraft mechanics. While residing in the Dallas area with his family, he would pass a beautiful farm on his way to Ennis. His dream was to own that farm one day. His dream came true as the owners favored him and his family to be the next owner of this beautiful farm, which overlooks the Dallas skyline. He has enjoyed this farm since moving there in 1968. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico with his family as a benefit for being an airline employee. His pride and joy ultimately were his life on the farm raising cattle and crops and living off the land.
He had quite the appetite for Czech and American cuisine and sharing a beer or two with his family and friends. Jerry was a humble and simple man with simple dreams. His dream was to marry his high school sweetheart, Janie, become an aircraft mechanic, be a father and grandfather, and own a farm. His
dreams all came true.
Jerry was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ennis and Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Ferris. He was also a member of the SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis and Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Janie; daughter Janet Marusak; daughter Jenna Hunter and son-in-law David; son Jerry Marusak and daughterin-law Maria; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters in the Ennis area; a number of nieces and nephews; and extended family.
Jerry was declared legally blind on December 31, 2019, and despite being bedridden for six- and one-half months, he not one time complained of his suffering. Our dear mother, Janie, ultimately loved and was devoted to caring for our father. She never left his side.
