Jeremy Owen > Graphic Design & Creative Communication > Editorial & Social Media Content -Meistersingerstrasse, 48 81927 Munich Germany
A very warm welcome to this, the latest issue of Pleasure Unit, a “magafolio“, if you will, wherein I show my latest work in the fields of graphic design and creative communication. As you probably know I like to work on as varied a selection of projects as possible. This past year has been no exception. Since we last spoke I have been involved in digital apps, brand relaunches, online campaigns, packaging, good old-fashioned print advertising and have continued my assualt into the world of entertainment with a number of unusual projects for film and TV production houses.

All the work featured has been created by me either as a solo practioner or as creative lead. Each project has proven to be successful in communicating directly to it‘s intended audience, fulfilling the needs of the brief and providing maximum ROI but also offering originality, substance, and memorability along the way.

What follows is a small selection of my favourite pieces. As ever, my aim is to demonstrate a real cross-platform skillset: there is work across many different styles and vernaculars, many based on original concepts that I have developed, others where I am working with supplied assets to pre-determined guidelines.

// TASTEFUL BRANDING #FOOD & HOSPITALITY Each year prestige concept catering company Rex Bavariae produce 4 catering themes that are available for clients to purchase for corporate events. To give a taste of what can be expected I created 4 idents that expressed these individual concepts visually but maintained the high-end feel established by the Rex brand.
Street Food A rough and ready version of the corporate typeface was used to bring across the uncomplicated but flavoursome visual attitude of street food vendors around the world.
Munich Disco The corporate typeface was once again adapted and tweaked to symbolise something of the glamour of Munich’s elegant nightlife scene.
Toscana Tuscan food is always popular but is marred by many visual clichés. To combat this I returned to the 1930s heyday of resorts such as Forte Dei Marmi for inspiration.
Healthy Eating Health food can often seem to be the antithesis of party food. To show that it doesn’t have to be a heavy-weight script font was used to present a relaxed nature with an elegant attitude. -CLIENT: REX BAVARIAE INPUT: LAYOUT, TYPOGRAPHY, DESIGN

// HOME IS WHERE... #LICENSING Founded by two experienced members of the licensing community, The Brand Residence is a new agency for brand licensing. They came to me to create an identity that reflected the fact that with over 50 years of combined experience on entertainment licensing properties of the calibre of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, The Brand Residence provide a natural home for clients wishing to leverage their brand across a multitude of applications.
Logotype To create a new logo I took the initials of the company and used them to form a pictogram reminiscent of a building plan. The ‘open door’ formed by the tail of the R ‘welcomes’ in a circle, a dynamic element to reinforce the claim of a natural home for their clients’ brands.
Website The first application of the ident was a company website. The design was limited to a one-page responsive site. We wanted to avoid all clichés of the brand licensing industry and used the agencies Starnberg ‘home’ as the inspiration and the driver for a collection of natural imagery to provide counterpoint to the content, a strong focus on the clients’ brands. -CLIENT: THE BRAND RESIDENCE INPUT: CONCEPT, TYPOGRAPHY, DESIGN
// AIMING HIGH #SPORT H&N Sport share the top of the sports shooting market but they want to be the company leading the way. As such they have invested in the design of their packaging to ensure that it is has more standout on the shelves than that of their competitors. The products were high performance ammunition from the target/hunting range. The packaging needed to reflect their individual naming and related product characteristics for a very loyal and discerning consumer market. -CLIENT: H&N SPORT INPUT: CONCEPT, LAYOUT, IMAGE RETOUCHING

// A SENSE OF COLOUR #MARKETING & DATA FARMING Leading sensory market research laboratory ISI were attending the 11th Sensory Science conference in Pangborn, Sweden. To compliment a new newly revised logo they needed a fresh approach to the rest of their brand that was vibrant and colourful to express the idea of ‘sensory’ engagement. I applied a secondary palette of colours to a flash device based on the notion of an open swatch book. These stylings were applied to two new corporate brochures and extended to create a brand image for their exhibition space and a series of giveaways. -CLIENT: ISI SENSORY LABORATORY INPUT: CONCEPT, TYPOGRAPHY, LAYOUT, ARTWORKING

// FLYING HIGH WITH HENKEL TOUCH #AEROSPACE Henkel are a household name in household products but less well known is that they manufacture a vast range of adhesives for the international aeropsace industry. To streamline their sales process they decided that they wanted to create an interactive catalogue available as an app download for smart devices. Working closely with the client, my solution was a simple and clear interface-led solution designed to be easy by sales teams in the field. To navigate the vast amount of technical data, the majority of navigation was placed in a collapsible menu on the left. This leverages the full tablet screen for product data but allowed for a stress-free method of filtering by getting the user to their product within 3 clicks via 3 search styles: category, application or specification. -CLIENT: HENKEL AEROSPACE DIVISION INPUT: LAYOUT, USER INTERFACE, ICON DESIGN

// PRIDE OF LIONS #PROMOTIONAL Calling card using letterpress technique Produced for a lawyer and board member of local Lion’s/ Rotary Clubs, the card had to look suitably prestige but also project his easy-going, personable nature. My solution was a friendly lions head with a mane that creates an outline of a wax seal. Text was limited to just the name in Myriad to offer space for personalised handwritten messages. -CLIENT: WERNER NEUMANN INPUT: CONCEPT, TYPOGRAPHY, ILLUSTRATION
// ALL ON PARK LANE #FOOD & HOSPITALITY Monopoly™ is the annual lead campaign for the famous Scottish restaurant chain, featuring an extensive online presence to support events going on in-store. A poor photography briefing led to a large amounts of assets being unsuitable for task. There was therefore a need for some urgent Photoshop-led damage limitation. I was called in to take the existing assets and build new background sets aswell as improve the quality of the portraits of the lead character created for the initiative. -CLIENT: MCDONALD’S INPUT: ARTWORKING, IMAGE RETOUCHING

// SHOOTING IN COLOUR #SPORT MVP are one of Munich’s main paintball venues but have difficulties when it comes to advertising. There are strong legal isses when promoting a firearm based activity on public transport. To circumvent these problems I devised an advert spoofing glamour product advertising as a means of catching attention without any direction to the weapons, ammunition, targets or collateral damage usually associated with shooting sports. -CLIENT: MVP MUNICH INPUT: CONCEPT, TYPOGRAPHY, IMAGE RETOUCH

//ALTERNATIVE MOVIE POSTERS #ENTERTAINMENT The brief is simple, I take a film that I like and I think how I would like to see it represented. Sometimes the intent is to improve on the original, sometimes its simply to express my enthusiasm for the film in question. Either way, these are self-contained projects that offer a space for graphic experimentation. AS FEATU

To support a recent pitch presentation to major TV networks by the prolific Berlin & Munich based production company Ratpack, I created a spoof advent calender as packaging for a seasonal script offer that centres around the premise of Santa getting burnt out by the pressures of the festive season
To support a recent pitch presentation to major TV networks by the prolific Berlin & Munich based production company Ratpack, I created a set of props to reflect a script that centres around a dentist who joins a motorcyle gang in the East German city of Neuruppin
The pack was sent out to all the major TV networks in Germany at the height of the pre-Christmas build up. The aim was that the product would fall in with all the usual corporate gifts but stand out by it‘s brazen rejection of the festive spirit: it featuresda heavyweight slogan informing the recipient that Christmas has been cancelled whilst within each window stereotypical Christmas scenes were crossed out! -CLIENT: RATPACK PRODUCTIONS INPUT: CONCEPT, LAYOUT, ARTWORKING, PRODUCTION
The key prop was a sew-on patch of the type worn by motorcycle clubs internationally. The piece featured the gang name along with legends popular in the culture such as ‘1%’ and ‘MC’, all rendered in the correct visual vernacular. Support material was a series of postcards for the town of Neuruppin. These were intended to be ironic: rather than pleasant scenes they showed a number of gritty elements but represented in the style of authentic holiday postcards. The materials were housed in a motorcyclists map case, along with the suggestive items of a knife and pair of pliers. -CLIENT: RATPACK PRODUCTIONS INPUT: CONCEPT, TYPOGRAPHY, ILLUSTRATION, PRODUCTION, RETOUCHING
