NARUTO UZUMAKI IS UNDOUBTEDLY ONE OF THE GREATEST CHARACTERS EVER CREATED.

Masashi Kishimoto brilliantly developed a character outside the Japanese standards both in cultural and behavioural terms, because in addition to yellow hair, blue eyes, his latent personality clashes with what is expected within a Japanese society.

The anime deals a lot with acceptance, social structuring and, from the moment there is a tragedy behind the story, there is a peculiar way that the character of Naruto conveys confidence.

It’s no wonder that, over 21 years, Naruto inspired thousands of people around the world and gave us valuable teachings. The proof of its relevance is that, even with the end of the saga, year-after-year it remains on the list of the most watched anime.

The sequel to the Naruto anime, Naruto Shippuden premiered on Japanese television and, since then, the adventures of the young ninja who dreams of becoming the next hokage (leader of his village), only grows in numbers of fans.

According to a survey published by Crunchyroll, one of the largest anime streaming platforms, Naruto Shippuden was the most viewed anime of the decade!

One of Naruto’s main virtues is, without a doubt, to value the people around him, without distinguishing between the Hokage and a student at the Academy, for example. He is extremely empathetic and, because he considers the people of the Hidden Leaf Village his family, he always tries to help everyone.

And of course, we couldn’t fail to mention his incessant search for Uchiha Sasuke. He did everything possible and impossible to rescue his best friend from the darkness and did not give up, even when everyone asked him to move on and all seemed lost.

Naruto is determination personified. It is no exaggeration to say that he does not know the word “limit” (in a good way, of course).

Almost everyone in Brazil has heard of Naruto and many people that are curious to know it have never stopped to watch it. So, if you have never watched it, stop what you’re doing and start binge watching it now. You will not regret it.

Naruto is a fictional character in the anime franchise, based on the original manga, created by Masashi Kishimoto

The anime was produced by Pierrot Studio along with TV Tokyo and aired between October 3, 2002 and February 8, 2007 on TV Tokyo, with a total of 220 episodes.

Naruto premiered in Brazil in January 2007 on Cartoon Network and in July of the same year on SBT already dubbed in Portuguese. Abroad, the anime had already aired on Disney’s former Jetix, with its first 104 episodes. Currently, the streaming services Claro Video and Netflix show the 220 episodes of this phase. There are four seasons of the first phase of the series and two of “Shippuden” available on Brazilian Netflix, while “Naruto Shippuden” is available in full on the streaming service Crunchyroll.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF A PHENOMENON

“Naruto” has proven itself, year after year, to be an intergenerational phenomenon capable of mobilizing a legion of fans, inspiring a whole assortment of cultural and commercial products derived from its universe and influencing people as to the way they dress, the practice of sports and even gastronomic experimentation, such as the famous Ramen, immortalized by the anime.

For a long time, for an anime to be considered a phenomenon in Brazil, some important characteristics were necessary, including exhibition on open television, products in stores and recognition by people in general. The fame of this anime collection went beyond the target audience, and their characters were identified by name among anyone minimally tuned. Among the lucky ones who have achieved this status in Brazil are Saint Seiya, Goku, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Naruto. But Naturo has always seemed to have something more special about it.

While the anime was shown on pay TV by Cartoon Network, publisher Panini began publishing the comic book version. In the same year, to further enhance the success, the ninja appeared in SBT’s children’s programming. Bandanas and jutsus quickly began to gain prominence on the product shelves, ranging from dolls to highlighter pens with the ninja stamped, and much of the series was still launched in the home-video market by PlayArte.

Everyone bet a lot on Naruto and the repercussion among the target audience was immense. Years prior, a lot of informative magazines put Goku and his friends on the cover to attract the attention of readers, this was the time when several Narutos dominated specialized magazines.

The sequel Naruto Shippuden had part of its episodes dubbed and was released on DVD and shown on the PlayTV pay channel, the character’s last feature film had a lightning release in theaters (even without the series having been shown in full here) and the fourth game in the Naruto Ultimate Ninja series had the merit of being one of the few animebased games to get a Portuguese dubbing in Brazil, an unprecedented feat to date for giant franchises like Dragon Ball. Even so, the series lacked accessibility to the target audience.

However, over time, children’s programming in Brazil suffered a blow with the regulation of children’s advertising. Unable to display advertisements to this audience, Naruto in particular still had an aggravating factor in this process of extinction of children’s programming in many broadcasting TV companies. Although it is aimed at teenagers, the anime

contains many scenes of explicit violence that caused headaches for broadcasters. SBT itself had to eliminate some scenes from Naruto so as not to have problems with the indicative rating that, at any time, could prohibit the exhibition of the anime in its morning’s programs. Due to all these problems, a third batch of episodes never made it to open TV.

If Naruto had its exhibition undermined on television almost 10 years ago, how can it be so heavily in demand to this day? The character continues to win licensed products, toys, and recently the Japanese production defeated Big Brother Brasil and the movie Cruella in the dispute for best Young/Adult Brand at Licensing Con 2021.

Naruto has already entered Brazilian popular culture. We have meetings of people practicing the “Naruto race” in cities in Brazil, cosplayers appearing on national television during the coverage of the Tokyo Olympics and even Ana Maria Braga, one of the biggest presenters in the country, dyeing her hair of pink in honor to Sakura Haruno. And she even opened an episode of her show by sending a heavy “Haruka Kanata” at nine in the morning.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT NARUTO

What explains today’s young children, who weren’t even born in the sbt airing, playing with jutsus at this date? I’ll tell you why: Naruto is a 12-year-old boy who is training to be a Ninja, and has a dream of one day becoming Hokage, who is the leader of the village. This dream causes laughter from other people, but little Naruto firmly believes in

his dream and never gives up. He even stipulated several rules of his own ninja style of being.

But the reason he causes laughter is because he is super undisciplined, rebellious, has attention deficit disorder, and has always been rejected by everyone in the village because he had a beast sealed in his body when he was a newborn. Because he suffers this rejection, without knowing the reason, he longs one day to be adored and respected by all, the day he becomes a hokage.

And that’s when we get attached to Naruto, because he suffers a lot, sometimes we really cry.

Despite the suffering and all the bullying, he is always cheerful, positive, persistent, and has the power to make people believe in him. Although very stubborn, which can be a little annoying, he is passionate, and sometimes it makes you want to hug him... But

he is an anime, right? So... How do you do it? Oops... Is it shameful to admit this?

Well, in addition to that, you are also impressed by the author’s creative ability. There is an infinity of characters, each with a specific ability, which makes the fight unpredictable. And with each episode there is a surprise, and as an audience member you are constantly surprised by new characters and challenges.

In this story, ninjas are warriors who sometimes act as defenders of the village, as soldiers, with a well-militarized formation; sometimes as ninjas hired to provide services to other smaller villages or with less military power. Naruto’s village, called the Hidden Leaf Village, is one of the strongest and most respected.

Much of the amazing creativity you’ll see in Naruto revolves around each ninja’s different

abilities with their jutsus. In the anime, Jutsus are limited to Ninja techniques. Outside of fiction, the Japanese term jutsu is used to describe any technique, power, ability, or depending on the scope, arts in general.

Ninja skills are called Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Shinjutsu; Taijutsu which are bodily techniques, which involve martial arts or the optimization of natural human abilities.

Ninjustu is chakra manipulation and hand seals.

Genjutsu are techniques that cause false sensations in the victim’s nervous system, altering the flow of the victim’s chakra and,

consequently, causing a disturbance in the senses, visual or sensory illusions.

And, Shinjutsu are techniques comparable to divine miracles; few characters have mastered this technique. The hand seals are inspired by Indian Mudras.

And to manipulate and shape the Chakra it is necessary to know its nature, that is, which element is the basis of your chakra: fire, wind, lightning, earth or water. In addition, there are dozens of other techniques and jutsus specific to each clan (or families) that are passed down from generation to generation genetically, which means, there is no way to learn: you have to inherit them through your genes.

But the anime doesn’t just focus on the incredible and electrifying fights. There is the ninja code, which is mentioned throughout the episodes and deals with a life dedicated to service, cultivating loyalty, striving for an ideal, moral values, friendship, teamwork, defending a purpose with one’s own life, and putting the mission above all else.

So, in addition to Naruto’s suffering that brings you closer to the character by bringing a very familiar feeling to all of us of wanting to be accepted, there are other moments when the characters who are “special guests”

of the episodes bring a series of reflections, about the relationship between father and son, or the weight of carrying a responsibility, or of being a model and hope for an entire community.

Even Sasuke himself, who is Naruto’s friend and teammate, has internal conflicts related to his father’s demand, that he has to match his older brother who was the prodigy of the Uchiha clan.

In addition, the anime also brings the theme of spirituality through character development. At various times, to defeat a strong enemy, they learn that before anything else, it is necessary to defeat their own demons, to seek an inner strength, a convinced decision, so that they also have conviction when fighting, and so, mentally prepared, they can use the full potential of their jutsus and their chakra control.

Also at other times, the characters are faced with internal conflicts that lead them to reflect on the value of human life, the sense of justice and loyalty to teammates in the mission, versus strictly following the hokage’s orders and fulfilling only the mission objective.

So, if you thought Naruto was just a cool fighting anime, you can prepare your heart... and the handkerchiefs... Because you will be thrilled and learn a lot together with them.

LESSONS FROM NARUTO: A TALE OF PERSEVERANCE AND RIVALRY

Episode 418 of Naruto Shippuden delves into the backstory of Might Guy, the spirited sensei of Rock Lee, also known as “Bushy Brows.” As a child, Guy was not accepted into the academy due to his inability to use ninjutsu. Undeterred, he challenged himself by running 500 laps around the village with a banner proclaiming his goal of being accepted on a re-call. Despite being mocked by other children, Guy remained resolute, determined to never let his father down.

Halfway through his goal, Guy collapsed from exhaustion. His father, Maito Dai, woke him up, scolding him gently but firmly. Guy apologized for not completing the 500 laps, but Dai explained that his efforts were commendable and that his “own rule” was meant to push him beyond his limits and help him stay disciplined. Even if he didn’t achieve his goal, the effort itself was valuable and deserving of recognition. Dai encouraged Guy to embrace his youth and his strengths, highlighting that knowing one’s weaknesses can amplify one’s strengths.

Dai emphasized that perceived flaws could be seen as qualities: repetitiveness as politeness,

MORAL OF THE EPISODE

No matter what your limitations are, if you have focus and determination you can become stronger than the most skilled of the skilled. And using its principles, sacrifice is something brave and noble, worthy of a true ninja, a true hero.

LESSONS FROM NARUTO NARUTO’S DHARMA

loudness as cheerfulness, and obstinacy as seriousness. Despite being mocked by two jonin for his eternal genin status, Dai always responded with a smile, teaching Guy resilience and positivity.

However, Guy, dissatisfied with the mockery, confronted the jonin but was overpowered. It was Kakashi, his future rival, who saved him. This rivalry with Kakashi became a driving force for Guy, inspiring him to improve and push his limits.

In the present, Guy prepares to face Madara, reflecting on how rivalry can fuel one’s growth. Kakashi, though a rival, was also a source of admiration and motivation for Guy, driving him to become stronger and challenge his limits.

In episode 420 of Naruto Shippuden, Naruto meets with Hagoromo. Naruto opens his eyes and wonders if he is dead. A voice from outside asks him: “What makes you think you’re dead? This ethical view of death differs greatly from what was perceived in my time. To use the term death so loosely... you must be more fervent, candid boy.”

Naruto asks: _ who are you?

Hagoromo replies, __ This is a precise inquiry for this location, but I am not sure of your ability to connect my name to my actions as a herald. I am the one who will attain peace and order. My name is Hagoromo.

I am an anachronism. Over a long time, traditions, cultural and also ethical notions have brought significant changes. Each time I cross time and meet a reincarnated person I recognize the intense changes between the person and me.

I am a person from the past, long since dead. I am a heap that wanders through this world like chakra, crossing generations, spreading the nishu, the ninja creed. Also known as the “Sage of the Six Paths”.

“Don’t confuse Ninjutsu with Nishu.” My ninja creed is made to give hope. Do not confuse it with ninjutsu that only brings conflict.”

HAGOROMO AND THE TALE OF TWO SONS: A LESSON FOR NARUTO

In a profound exchange, Hagoromo reveals to Naruto a striking resemblance to his son, Ashura. Despite Naruto’s initial confusion and dismissive attitude, Hagoromo persists, explaining the origins of the

divine tree and his own lineage.

Hagoromo recounts the story of his two sons, Indra and Ashura, who were taught the ninja code but exhibited starkly different abilities. Indra, the eldest, inherited Hagoromo’s powerful chakra genes and was naturally gifted, earning the title of genius. He relied solely on his own strength, recognizing his powers as unique and formidable.

In contrast, Ashura struggled from an early age, lacking innate abilities. He could not achieve greatness alone and required the support and cooperation of others. Through this, he discovered the power of body chakra, ultimately reaching a level of strength comparable to Indra’s. Ashura’s journey highlighted the importance of love and collaboration, leading him to understand that true power lies in the bonds formed with others.

Hagoromo’s tale emphasizes that exceptional parents do not guarantee exceptional children, drawing a parallel between Ashura and Naruto. The story serves as a reminder of the significance of teamwork and mutual support in achieving greatness. As Naruto listens, he begins to see the value in Hagoromo’s words, nodding in agreement with the sage’s insights.

HAGOROMO REVEALS NARUTO’S ANCESTRAL BURDEN

Continuing his revelation, Hagoromo explains his decision to appoint the younger brother, Ashura, as the guardian leader of the Ninja Creed, believing that his elder brother, Indra, would support him. However, Indra rejected this decision, sparking endless conflicts. Even after their deaths, their chakra continued to reincarnate through the ages.

Naruto, intrigued, asks if these reincarnations continue today. Hagoromo confirms that Naruto is the reincarnation of Ashura, having clearly sensed Ashura’s chakra within him. When asked about the reincarnation of Indra, Naruto immediately identifies Sasuke.

Naruto’s enquiries about past

reincarnations, and Hagoromo reveals that Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara were previous incarnations of Ashura and Indra, respectively. Their conflict, as Naruto knows, ended tragically. Madara’s obsession with power led to the confusion of a portion of Ashura’s chakra with Indra’s, awakening the Rinnegan and essentially recreating Hagoromo’s chakra.

Hagoromo left inscriptions on a stone containing his writings to guide future generations in dealing with such power, but it appears that no one fully understood their meaning.

HAGOROMO’S WISDOM AND THE PERIL OF POWER: A CALL TO ACTION FOR NARUTO

Naruto questions Hagoromo about his observations of the ongoing brotherly rivalry. Hagoromo explains that he has always believed chakra should be a binding force among people, not a means to amplify individual power. He reflects on his mother, Kaguya, whose arrogance turned her from a revered Goddess to a feared demon, demonstrating the dangers of concentrated power.

Madara, Hagoromo notes, is a contemporary example of this peril. Having obtained the power of the Ten Tails, Madara mirrors Kaguya and seeks her immense power. The Infinite Tsukuyomi, the genjutsu Madara aims to unleash, will trap people in dreams while exploiting their power.

Wait a minute! Let’s make a parenthesis here.

Isn’t this reminiscent of the scenario in the movie “The Matrix”? And when Hagoromo emphasizes the dire consequences if chakra is centralized again, transforming people into slaves bound by the divine tree’s roots, He recalls Kaguya’s use of her Sharingan and Byakugan to enforce this dreadful state, drawing a parallel to the plot of “WandaVision.”

I always like to play this game of who have influenced who, and it seems the tales of the east and west are constantly feeding back each other. The Matrix was released prior to Naruto and Wanda Vision many years later. But knowing Naruto’s story is based in several legends from Japanese mythology it’s hard to know who might have influenced who.

Now let’s close the parenthesis and continue in Naruto’s tale then.

Hagoromo urges Naruto to stop Madara, acknowledging Naruto’s unique potential despite his apparent foolishness. He commends Naruto’s unwavering faith and determination to protect the world, even in the face of death.

Naruto expresses his gratitude, but Hagoromo humbly declines, admitting that his efforts to counteract the natural flow of events might be seen as selfish.

HAGOROMO’S FINAL WORDS: EMPOWERING NARUTO AND SASUKE FOR PEACE

The scene shifts to reveal Hagoromo simultaneously conversing with Sasuke, who, like Naruto, is teetering on the brink of death and connected with his inner consciousness.

Hagoromo laments the misuse of the tailed beasts as weapons rather than for maintaining peace and balance, acknowledging his possible naivety. Naruto passionately disagrees, defending Hagoromo’s intentions.

Suddenly, the tailed beasts appear inside Naruto, explaining that

Obito had taken them from Madara and implanted them in Naruto. Kurama, the other half that was sealed in Minato, remarks that the promised time has come, aligning with Gamamaru’s prophecy about a blue-eyed youth who befriends the nine beasts.

Naruto, surprised, confirms the prophecy that the Great Sage foretold to Jiraiya, marveling at Hagoromo’s knowledge. Hagoromo, amused, praises Naruto’s ability to foster cooperation and recognizes his acceptance of Ashura’s reincarnation within him.

Hagoromo then summons all the tailed beasts, declaring that the time of prophecy has arrived. He asks Naruto what he wants to achieve in the war, seeking his sincere thoughts.

Naruto humbly admits his ignorance compared to Ashura but emphasizes his understanding of friendship and his desire to protect his friends. This is his simple yet profound answer.

In a symbolic gesture, Hagoromo addresses both Naruto and Sasuke, expressing regret for neglecting Indra in the past and entrusting them with his power. He asks them to extend their dominant arms, bestowing his power upon them—Naruto with the sun symbol and Sasuke with the moon symbol, representing their respective roles.

Hagoromo emphasizes that the future is now in their hands, as Naruto affirms his belief in achieving peace through friendship, despite not being real brothers with Sasuke.

Hagoromo’s power transfer marks a pivotal moment, showing Naruto with a yellow sun symbol on his palm and Sasuke with a blue moon symbol, highlighting their unity and shared destiny.

WHAT DOES THIS EPISODE TELL US?

That we have free will and what we do with it has consequences. There is no higher being who can intervene for us and stop us from destroying the world. The force that exists in us is here to be controlled by us. And even when someone manages to concentrate as much power as Madara and Kaguya, everyone’s union for the greater good will always be stronger.

Naruto and Sasuke’s union is like Yin and Yang, the energy of the sun, hot and strong, Yang and the energy of the moon Cold and calm, Yin.

Karin had already observed this, when she was brought to the leaf village as an informant prisoner. She compared Naruto and Sasuke’s energy, as Sasuke had a cold chakra and Naruto had a warm chakra, which makes you want to be close to him.

Obviously, metaphorically we are saying that Naruto and Sasuke complement each other, because Ashura and Indra are two portions of a whole, as the same as the yin Yang symbol.

THE HISTORY OF YU-GI-OH!

Like other popular collectibles such as Pokemon, the history of Yugi-Oh is a meteoric rise that would put Elon Musk to shame. The story of Yugi-Oh! was originally released in the not-too-distant 1996 in a famous Japanese magazine titled Weekly Shonen Jump. The coveted magazine was renowned for publishing titles such as Dragon Ball, One Piece and Naruto. Yu-Gi-Oh! (translation is King of Games) started as a horror manga comic which used the concept of games as innovation for its creative multimodal style of storytelling.

THE GAME WITHIN THE STORY

As the story of the first issue unfolds, the protagonist plays a game with another character. The players alternate turns putting money on their hands, and then

commence vigorously stabbing the money with a blade. Once a player successfully stabs the money, they get to keep it. The game ends once a player stabs his hand.

When the manga was initially released, it failed to receive much in the way of popularity. Though the first weeks of its release garnered mild interest in the concept, the new chapters of the manga started repeating the same formula, and with a slightly different tweak. Each week featured a different game, ranging from craps to Russian Roulette, until one particular week, the manga comic introduced a card game called “Magic & Wizards,” later renamed “Duel Monsters” in English. Initially designed as the first two-chapter game, the reaction of fans was astounding.Yu-gi-oh’s creature Kazuki Takahashi, tried to make the concept work with alternative games such as chess, but it was the card game Magic and Wizard that drew the largest response, rising quickly to popularity in Japan.

Upon receiving the

news, Konami, a major producer of video-based arcade games, elected to buy the rights from Weekly Shonen Jump to create a card game based on the popular manga. It should be noted though, that due to the manga’s darker tones limited much of its global audience, especially in America, and Konami needed a franchise that could compete with the rising Pokemon giant that was quickly taking the world by storm. So, in their collective wisdom, they elected to take the safer option to design YuGi-Oh! as a more familyfriendly game. The new and creative cartoon would

shortly air in 2000 in Japan, (with a large focus on the card game, to promote the OCG(Original Card Game) and would see a localization by 4Kids and Kids WB in 2001.

After gaining enormous success nationally throughout Japan, and with the international release of the television show, Konami sold the localization rights to Upper Deck Entertainment in order to translate the cards into English, which occurred in 2002. Konami delayed the production of the cartoon to compete with the decline in Pokemon popularity and saw an opportunity to gain an advantage over their competition, as children were looking for something new. In late 2001, Konami was sending VHS and DVD guides, and the first promo card was revealed in December 2001: the “Summoned Skull” sample.

The iconic Legends of the Blue Eyes, distributed in March 2002, was the first set produced outside of Japan. It also featured the acclaimed “Blue-Eyes White Dragon” card used mainly by Seto Kaiba, a popular rival in the cartoon; “Dark magician”, the main character’s primary card; and finally “Exodia, the Forbidden One”, a legendary card that allows the player to win if they get all five parts in your hand, as revealed during the first duel between Kaiba and Yugi in the anime series.

And because the cartoon was

also promoting and showing how the game is played, children quickly became more interested in Yu-gi-Oh cards much more than with other franchises.

YU-GI-OH’S LEGACY AND WORLDWIDE IMPACT

Yu-Gi-Oh! previously sold over $17 million USD worth of cards in the first few months of their release in the US, with Konami’s share gaining over 30% in the following 12 months after it.

By the end of the following year 2002, Yu-gi-oh released four iconic sets: Legends of the Blue Eyes, Metal Rider, Magic Ruler (renamed to Spell Ruler) and Pharaoh’s Servant. In the years that followed, Toys “R” Us (and similar toy and game outlets) regularly promoted Yu-gi-oh tournaments to increase public interest in the franchise. Yu-Gi-Oh! was the first of the large gaming companies to team up with McDonald’s and similar corporations

to produce promo cards — a marketing strategy which Pokémon would copy a few years later.

Yu-Gi-Oh!  would go on to sell over 35 billion cards in the following decades, toppling even Pokémon from the coveted 1 spot who had previously sold over 34 billion. Jump were later inspired to issue their second magazine, called V-Jump, which displayed other popular card games or manga comics that were featured in the Weekly Shonen Jump (this included popular brands like Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Heroes and YuGi-Oh! information and promos, and it also features mobile phone games and apps: Dokkan, Dragon Ball Legends, One Piece Treasure Cruise, etc.).

As one of the holy trinity of gaming inspired shows that popularized Japanese animation on TV in the US, Yu-Gi-Oh! deserves its spot when discussing the most important media franchises of the early 2000s.

MOST VALUABLE AND ICONIC TRADING CARDS.

3. Tyler The Great Warrior: $311,211 Its impossible not to mention one of the most heart-warming tales in the history of trading cards.

In 2002, There was a young boy named Tyler who was heart-breakingly diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of liver cancer. Make- A-Wish foundation caught wind of Tyler’s plight, who showed a lot of courage and had to endure painful and rigorous surgery to treat it. Once they heard the story, Make-A-Wish were quickly in touch with Tyler’s family and 4Kids to allow the boy to design his own card. This dramatic event led to the creation of Tyler The Great Warrior, the only Make-A-Wish promo card to feature in the history of Yu-Gi-Oh! There has only ever been one printing of the card, which was given to Tyler himself.

In addition to this, Tyler’s battle with cancer has a happy ending as well, as Tyler beat cancer and is currently living a healthy life. Last year, Tyler put the card up for auction where it sold for $311,211, making it one of the most

expensive Yu-Gi-Oh! card purchases in the game’s history.

2. Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon (T3-01):

Valued at USD

$400,000

One of the most powerful cards in Seto Kaiba’s deck, The Blue Eyes Ultimate dragon card is a force to be reckoned with, also taking years for the card to be printed in English. Japan, however, received a version of the card as early as 1999.

In 2001, the Asia Championships occurred,

with the winner of the tournament receiving a copy of the coveted BlueEyes Ultimate Dragon, complete with casing signed by Kazuki Takahashi himself.

It popped up on sale at Card Shop Spiral in Japan, going for a whopping $400,000 (or 45 million yen). It›s the rarest Blue-Eyes and Fusion Monster, as this version of the card is so rare, as it is the only one to ever be made.

1. Black Luster Soldier: Valued at $10

Million USD

Black Luster Soldier was used by Yugi in the original cartoon and is nothing

more than a vanilla Ritual Monster. While each of these versions aren’t rare or valuable at all, a special version of Black Luster Soldier was given to the winner of the first-ever YuGi-Oh! tournament Duel Monsters 1 and to make it stand out even futher, it was printed on stainless steel.

In 2013, the owner decided to put it up for sale for ten million dollars, the highest price at the time for a trading card.

25 years on, Yu-GiOh continues to be a powerhouse in the trading world, with new competitions and tournaments springing up annually, and a new VR experiment on the horizon.

THERE ARE MOMENTS IN LIFE WHERE WE ALL FACE ADVERSITY

and meet personal hardship, and its during those moments that we truly see the best in those that support us. We have been facing such a time at Spoiler where personal tragedy has unfortunately set back some of the projects we wanted for 2024, and at times we worried that it carried over into our passion, our fire for doing what we love. And so it was in the spirit of rekindling that fire that Fandomcon was ignited. This was a time for fans and lovers of all things pop-culture, especially in the animation and TCG world, where we could set aside our personal tragedies and come together to celebrate some of the things we love. Our friendship group extended beyond our personal and everyday familiar and went

global, to reach to the many thousands of fans and supporters in all things that spark that passion. We are truly grateful for all the people who

showed up, tuned in or are currently reading this 2024 issue. Spoiler is unique in this way, as it is a magazine composed by fans, for the fans, and the convention in San Jose was an event with the same spirit. We are truly humbled by the groundbreaking attendance that took place at FandomCon this year. This was represented in every nook and cranny of the centre, from the people lining up around the block to claim their passes, the record in attendance on the main stage, the gatherings in the TCG arena, or the panels in Exhibitor Hall

where fans could have a more in-depth Q and A with some of the creative genius that was present. This was the true spirit of FandomCon: a place where all can share in the evocative effects of the creative process and how animation and gaming can come to life and breach the divide between the artist and audience. Our hallways were littered with Cosplayers: both professional and enthusiasts, and their showcases, including some of our youngest fans. We will touch base further on our Cosplay Showcase article. The party didn’t stop and performers like None like Joshua and Lindsay So warmed up the crowd with a crescendo of songs that could have you leaping on the dance floor or navel gazing about all that jazz. While we could not talk about Bruno, we could certainly talk about Adassa and other talented voice actors like Jennie Kwan and Saffron Henderson, or a comic book man such as Ming Chen. We were

blessed by entire cast ensembles like the good folks at The Amazing Digital Circus and The Hoyoverse. We played host to talented visual artists like Wil Shrike and Stuntmen like Al Burke and reviewers like Mark Ricci. People talk so flippantly about the power of belonging, or the sense of community people feel when they are connected to something larger, a vested interest where people unite over the things they love, rather than that what they are opposed to. We do not take these things for granted at Spoiler, for we understand the power that lies in belonging to such an amazing community. It is such a truly humbling experience for all, and to all our fans for your continued support, and we are eternally grateful. We thankyou for waiting so patiently for another edition, and for another opportunity for us all to gather and rekindle the fire that brings us all together. We look forward with great anticipation for the many projects coming in 2025, and base on this we hope that you continue to join us for conventions in the future, as you are all truly the spark that continues to fuel our fire in the years to come.

TECH WIZARD AND COMIC BOOK AFICIONADO MING CHEN IS BEST KNOWN AS ONE OF THE STANDOUT

stars of Kevin Smith’s coveted Comic Book Men. Alongside such other superfans of the Comic craft as Walter Flanagan, Ming has earned a reputation as the geek culture cheerleader we not only need, but deserve. From his fast-paced banter on screen to his irresistible passion for all things comics, toys, and collectibles, Ming’s appreciation for the finer things in pop-culture, especially the TCG market, is as authentic as it gets.

Ming first rose to prominence in pop-culture, specifically the comic world, through a dream gig—running the website for cult director and producer Kevin Smith’s View Askew Productions That connection would eventually land him a coveted spot in Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, the comic shop that is the prime focus of Comic Book Men, where fans got to see Ming get his geek on with Kevin Smith, Walter Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, and the rest of the crew on all things collectible, and unlike the show Pawn Brokers, focused very heavily on the game and action figure market. Comic Book Men ran for a total of seven seasons on AMC, and included some great celebrity cameos. My favorite was of course when Lando Calrissian himself, Mr Billy Dee Williams was involved in a game of high stakes…errr… go fish, to win back The Millenium Falcon. While the cameos were great, it was no

doubt that Ming’s infectious energy was at the center of it all,and one of the primary reasons why fans would tune in each episode.

After Comic Book Men, Ming’s career has continued to thrive. He’s built a growing podcast empire with the show I Sell Comics, with a rapidly rising fan base, where he dives deep into the latest comic book news, and he’s become a prominent figure on the comic convention circuit.

Ming Chen is also a committed entrepreneur, co-owning A Shared Universe PodcaStudio,. through this podcasting medium, Ming helps others harness the power of the fandom and their individual passion and creativity to build their own communities.

With his limitless enthusiasm and authentic love for nerd-dom, Ming Chen is the ultimate ambassador for fans everywhere. Whether he’s breaking down comic book storylines, savoring the latest collectibles, or sharing behind-the-scenes stories from his work on AMC’s Comic Book Men, Ming fulfills the wisdom that if you love what you do, you don’t work a day in the life. What’s next for Ming? More conventions, more podcasts, and maybe even more screen time.

It was a great honor to see Ming Chen grace the stage at Fandomcon, and in the immortal words of Palpatine, we will continue to “watch his career with great interest.”

HISTORY: IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE THE RESOUNDING

impact Pokemon has made on modern culture as a whole, starting off as a small Nintendo game called Pocket Monsters before becoming a worldwide phenomena, ranging from television shows, action figures, live action movies and several parodies including South Park’s hilarious Chin Pokemon episode.

SO HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

Pokemon is the brainchild of Satoshi Tajiri and his friend and illustrator, Ken Sugimori. In 1982, Tajiri started a small but unique gaming magazine called Game Friends, which was a collaborative effort involving some of his closest friends. The group branched out from magazines before deciding to have a crack at the emerging video game market. They realized soon after that the video arcade scene at the time wasn’t as popular anymore and decided to develop games themselves into the

rising market of cartridge games with companies like Nintento, Atari and Sega making a name for themselves. This included games that were published by Nintendo on the Nintendo Entertainment system NES and Game Boy like Yoshi, and even games for SEGA like Magical Tarurūto-kun on consoles such as the Sega Master system 1 and 2, and the popular Sega Mega Drive. When Tajiri and Co. introduced the idea of Pokémon to Nintendo, however, the publishers were a bit flummoxed and didn’t really get the concept. However, Tajiri was given the benefit of the doubt thanks to the previous success of Game Freak’s earlier works, and they also considered his tutelage under the mentor Shigeru Miyamoto to create Pocket Monsters: Red and Green, a game which combined the

collecting and trading of monsters. And so began the meteoric rise of a franchise that would go on to become the second largest gaming franchise of all time. (A close second to the ever-popular Super Mario series, also owned by Nintendo.

The date of 26 February 1996, would be revered among Pokemon fans the world over as it ushered in the debut of the Pokémon franchise in the form of both those games on the Nintendo Game Boy. At its core, Pocket Monsters: Red and Green was a very basic Japanese role-playing game. You play as a Pokémon trainer travelling the world and collecting the ubiquitous little monsters (inspired by Tajiri’s childhood love for insect collection) and training them in battles with other Pokémon. What was so innovative about this product was that gamers could connect to each other’s Gameboys using a data cord and trade Pokemon with each other.

United Kingdom and the rest of the world a year later, as a Red and Blue version (instead of Green). They also shortened and adapted the game title from Pocket Monsters to Pokémon.

Since this auspicious launch, seven more generations of Pokémon games have been released, from Gold and Silver, to Ruby and Sapphire, Diamond and Pearl, Black and White, X and Y, Sun and Moon, and most recently Sword and Shield. The game also evolved to Pokemon GO: the popular phone game app that was made even more immersive and innovative by including real world maps, allowing users to find Pokemon as they walked around their local neighbourhoods and catching them with their phone. (certainly a great way to get those daily steps in).

With each new generation more Pokémon joined the games, in fact there are now around 898 different species of Pokémon! (So it’s going to take a long time to Catch ‘Em All!)

TV HISTORY

In 1997, and after such as successful run of cards and games, Pokémon was eventually turned into an animated TV series in Japan, before soon being broadcast worldwide.

POKEMON’S WORLDWIDE IMPACT

The games went on to sell millions of copies, and were soon unleashed on the US market in 1998, with the

The series followed the story of a boy named Satoshi (inspired by the creator) as he set off on an epic quest to try to become a Pokémon master, joining him on this journey was his faithful companion, Pikachu.

When the series was released worldwide, the producers changed Satoshi’s name to Ash Ketchum. Since then, there has been 23 series of Pokémon, and more than 1,000 episodes of the show! The show was a cult hit amongst children and young adults alike. Eventually, the television series would become a live action movie as well.

TRADING AND COLLECTIBLES

After the worldwide success of the first few games, the company Media Factory created the Pokémon Trading Card Game (or TCG for short).

The first set of cards were produced on October 20, 1996, containing 102 cards, and included detailed drawings by Ken Sugimori, Mitsuhiro Arita and Keiji Kinebuchi. The cards grew very quicklyin popularity, and three years later in 1999, they were introduced to North America by Wizards of the Coast and soon after, had a worldwide release, much like the video games, that were a hit in the rest of the world.

Pokémon card tournaments sprang up all around the USA and worldwide, where players could

duke it out, forging the way for the renowned  world championship tournament.

Since their inception, more than 30 billion cards have been printed, with a few connoisseurs paying hundreds of thousands of pounds for some of the rarest of cards. The most expensive sale to date: the 1 PSA 10 Illustrator Pikachu was bought by YouTube influencer Logan Paul in 2022 at an approximate value of $5.275 million dollars, making it the most expensive Pokémon card ever sold.

The Pokemon brand is still to this day one of the most iconic of trading cards, and refuses to end its successive run, with local and international tournaments currently taking place in 2024, and consumer demand for each of the cards is still sky high.

THE FUTURE OF POKEMON

Rumours have hit the international market that the phenomon that is Pokemon is set to launch a new series of the game, especially in the online component, while Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in 2024 are almost unanimously getting new events, such as special Tera Raid bosses or Mass Outbreaks, TPCi may reveal that both Pokemon Johto and Unova games could be next in the pipeline, and they would likely take the internet by storm now after all the rumors, and possibly taking over as the company’s main project. At the moment, consumers are looking toward 2025, when Gen 10 could be announced and released, but The Pokemon Company may decide to wait a bit longer and break their traditional three-year development cycle for the latest instalment of games and trading options.

Whatever the future of the Pokemon Empire, there is no doubt of the impact Pokemon has had on modern culture, and still appears to makes waves in 2024.

The cast of The Amazing Digital Circus

is a diverse and highly skilled troupe of voice actors who bring life to the enigmatic characters of this recent and popular dark comedy animated series. Celebrated for their energetic and highly engaging performances, the cast has garnered a large following, especially within the wide and equally diverse fandom of the Amazing Digital Circus, which is why we were proud to announce their inclusion to our guest list for FandomCon 2024.

You can see some of the inspirations behind this show including Tim Burton, Drawn Together, I have No Mouth and I Must Scream, and possibly Peter Jackson’s Meet the Feebles. Lizzie Freeman is known for her expressive range

and her ability to bring both humor and depth to character performance (She is also part of the main cast of the Hoyoverse).

Their work on The Amazing Digital Circus has earned them widespread acclaim, particularly for their portrayal of volatile emotions in an otherwise chaotic and satirical, digital world. Michael Kovac brings a comedic edge to the show, delivering sharp, and calculated biting dialogue with impeccable timing, while Amanda Hufford captivates audiences with their rich, dramatic performance, often serving as the emotional heart of the story. In addition to these players and vocal talents, resides Alex Rocchon, who brings charisma to the very unstable and volatile Caine. Rounding out this prominent guest list is Marissa Lenti and Amanda Hufford, who bring further comedic energy and emotional depth to the show.

Each actor’s unique contribution helps to create the show’s distinctive tone, blending humor, emotion, and highenergy performances that have made it a fan favorite, which made them a vital inclusion to FandomCon 2024.

We may not talk about Bruno, but we can certainly talk about Adassa’s

contribution to the family Madrigal in the smash hit Encanto. One of the most prominent voices in the movie, Adassa almost missed her showstopping opportunity after having unfortunately been struck by covid, which put Adassa in hospital twice after her audition. Despite this, she took on a Rocky Balboa-esque return to form and knocked the role right out of the park.   Adassa’s steady rise to fame began as a reggaeton superstar, touring and performing alongside the likes of Pitbull, Flo-rida and Snoop Dogg, and has five studio albums to her name so far. But thanks to Disney’s Encanto, Adassa has skyrocketed into international fame as the voice of Dolores Madrigal—the whispering, mysterious cousin with the power of superhuman hearing. Born in Miami and raised in St Croix, The Virgin Islands, Adassa’s diverse cultural background shines through in everything she does. Her transition into acting started with Encanto, and was met with critical acclaim. While Dolores might be soft-spoken, Adassa’s performance was anything

but, making the bombastic tune of We Don’t Talk about Bruno an instant hit, dominating the charts worldwide.  Like all good performers, Adassa is multi-talented. Outside of Disney studios, she’s continued her musical journey, collaborating with big names in the Latin music scene and performing at major events. She’s also become a fan favorite at conventions and Disney events, where she interacts with Encanto lovers of all ages, spreading the joy of the Madrigal magic wherever she goes.

The mother of seven children, Adassa also thinks passionately about her family and the local community. Adassa is also passionate about giving back to the community. She’s a vocal advocate for arts education and frequently speaks about the importance of Latin representation in the entertainment world. She is also starting to tour pop-culture conventions worldwide, including her wonderfully entertaining efforts at FandomCon in San Jose this year.

INTRODUCING MAGIC THE GATHERING: THE WORLDWIDE GAMING PHENOMENON

Sorry- I couldn’t help but make the highlander reference there, but much like the immortals of the iconic 1993 film, you might have seen these cards just out of the corner of your eye, hanging in the shadows or you may have seen it hiding in plain sight around many school playgrounds from the early 90s till the present day. The various elemental symbols as people flashed them in their exchanges felt more like a secret code and custom. I’m talking about the widely popular Magic: The Gathering

HISTORY OF THE BRAND

Magic: The Gathering was the invention of Richard Garfield, a PhD candidate in mathematics who was a little unsatisfied with previous games and wanted to deliver a card game experience that was like no other and unleashed his creation on the world in 1993. He brought games into his college courses for undergraduates and even demonstrated the fundamentals of what were considered condiment games when eating out with

colleagues. After a major game publisher refused a board game that Garfield submitted, he challenged the man to “describe a game concept—any concept—and I’ll design a game around it for you.” So the President of games of Wizards of the Coast, (a company that was struggling financially) Kent Adkison, devised a simple but distracting game that was useful during downtime at game conventions. Following that moment and in just two short years after Garfield’s golden goose, Magic: The Gathering premiered at GenCon in 1993. From that moment on, the world of card games would never be the same.

SO, HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?

Magic players are wizards, who battle it out with each other with magic spells which can summon certain supernatural creatures or it can affect the conditions of the battle, or manipulate the rules of the game. Magic: The Gathering is deliberately complex and can seem

difficult at first but is also a lot of fun because each card is unique, and all can change the elements and directions, or essentially the rules, of the game. There are also some rare cards, which are quite the collector’s item which we will get to in a moment, that if used can open up even more ways to win or lose. Despite the complexities of this, however makes the game not only unique but very fun to play, from novices to experts.

UNIQUE MARKETING AND DISTRIBUTION

Where most other card games were sold as a single packaged and distributed product, Magic cards would come in randomised packs( much like NBA and baseball collectible cards). Unique and often

powerful cards would be rarer than others, making collecting and trading them as much a part of the experience as actually playing matches. Players would assemble their own decks, with a near-limitless ability to personalise their game and develop their own tactics.

This card production formula proved to be a lucrative hit for Wizards of the Coast. After its release and initial distribution run in 1993, Magic grew by word of mouth. Players obsessed over the process of building decks, endlessly hunting for the most effective card combinations and devising a huge range of winning strategies.

In 2024, Magic: The Gathering is played by approximately 20 million people around the world. It is published in eleven languages, has a globally popular tournament scene, a professional league and even recently provided the basis for an episode of South Park.

THE IMPACT THE BRAND HAS ON THE COLLECTIBLES MARKET

Last year, Hasbro company announced that Magic had become its first billiondollar brand in terms of annual sales, eclipsing other toy lines in its stable, such as Transformers and G.I. Joe.

This epic milestone was achieved after thirty years of cultivating the game for life long fans, while finding ways to encourage new players to pick it up. It

was considered a “winning playbook,” as Chris Cocks, the chief executive of Hasbro, commented in an interview.

Since the game’s inception, it has reached over fifty million people worldwide — including such celebrities as rapper Post Malone, (who is of particular note in our iconic cards section) and Hollywood actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt — who have played Magic in hobby shops, conventions and around kitchen tables around the world. The game casts players as wizards who derive their powers by picking cards from the decks they have built, drawing from an ever-expanding universe of cards that are bought, sold and traded in a thriving secondary market. Magic’s popularity has spawned a cottage industry of video games, comic books, a Caribbean cruise, with now an animated series in development for Netflix. Despite some production issues, the series is planned for launch in the near future and is rumoured to have Marvel powerhouses The Russo brothers as executive producers for the series. Wizards of the Coast also played host to the debut MagicCon in Philadelphia, which will continues this year and in the short future following the success of last year’s convention.

After the initial buzz when it first appeared, Magic flew under the

radar for many years, said Gerrick Johnson, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets who covers the toy industry. “Now you get to see how big it is,” he added. “I don’t think there is any toy brand that is even half that size.”

But Hasbro faces challenges making Magic even bigger, particularly player fatigue brought on by the release of 39 new card sets last year, up from 15 in 2019, according to an analysis by Bank of America. New sets can start around $50 and in the case of some of the rarer ones, can lead into thousands and albeit, millions of dollars.

MOST ICONIC CARDS OF MAGIC: THE GATHERING

The Highly Coveted The One Ring to Rule Them all -Highest Sold Price $2.64 Million Worth over 3 million dollars, the incredibly rare (Only one of its kind) card, much like the Lord of the

Rings ‘precious’ was highly sought after, and was sold to rapper Post-Malone, who acquired it for $2.64 million USD.

The Story behind The One Ring is a very recent addition in Magic’s rich history, as the company revealed their heavily Tolkien-inspired creation in March ;last year. A special version of the card was revealed, and much like the ring, is printed in Elvish as a unique “There can be only one” copy with Magic’ the Gathering’s Tales of Middle Earth set. The announcement triggered a maelstrom of excitement across the internet, and

as well as being inspired by LOTR, also evoked nostalgia of a real-life Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket moment. Collectors grappled with the enigma of what the first-of-itskind card might be worth, which redefined the limits of card valuations.

Black Lotus Highest Sold Price – approximately

$800,000 USD

Like the one to rule them all, The Black Lotus has also garnered quite an impressive reputation in card trading. Boasting an astounding price that has reached a mind-shattering $800,000USD, this vast price chasm compared to the third card in our list, which sold for a mere $100,000, only helps to

underscore the unparallel rarity and power of the Black Lotus.

At the price tag conveys, the Black Lotus is no ordinary card; compares to most other Magic cards, it’s a single use artifact, playable just the once, and wields an astonishing ability to instantly infuse the players mana pool with

three mana of any color.. Hailing back to Magic’s original competitive origins, the card made it’s debut in Alpha’s 1993 printing run. The card is celebrated for its scarcity, with only an estimated 1,100 copies in existence, and unrivalled power, the card is a step up to the competition, showcasing some formidable spells and an unfair advantage over any player.

Copy Artifact

Highest Sold Price-

Approximately $100,000 USD

The Coveted Copy Artifact cards rounds out the top three of this iconic list. The third most expensive in the repertoire of Magic cards, the Copy Artifact has reached mammoth heights of $100,000USD in all respective Magic collectors circles. This magical enchantment, holding a modest cost of only two mana, shows the power to forge an exact duplicate of any artifact it chooses to replicate, an ability as straightforward as the name suggests and a complete game changer for any Magic enthusiast. The history of the card’s epic price and value rise is also characterised by significant fluctuations in its original value, before recently surging past the impressive $100,000 USD milestone.

This article is just a small foray into the expansive world of Magic the Gathering, and hopefully provides readers with some insight or reaffirmation of why this iconic card game is still so popular in the present and will no doubt continue its epic surge in the collectibles market in a near future.

He has also shown off some acting chops and appeared in a number of projects including Gen V, Fear thy Neighbour and Web of lies, to name but a few.

Best know for stuntman, occasional biker, wrestler, tough guy

and Billy Idol enthusiast, you might recognise Al Burke on the wrestling mat or have seen his work behind the wheel on the Silver Screen. Most notable is his role as a die-hard Billy Idol fan in The Wedding Singer, helping Adam Sandler’s character Robbie, overcome his arch-nemesis and reveal his love for Julia.

An avid car enthusiast, Burke has had quite the career behind the wheel as a stunt driver in shows such as Relentless, American Cartel and Dead Sea. He is also a famous wrestler, aka Mr Outrageous, wrestling an enhancement talent and a 16 time Pro-wrestling champion for the WWF in the late 80s to early 1990s.

Introducing to FandomCon 2024, Mr. Wil

Shrike is a popular digital artist known for creating vibrant, detailed and sometimes macabre fan art for various conventions where they’ve become essential viewing. Shrike’s signature style blends realism and fantasy, sometimes with a touch of the horror or gothic conventions often featuring beloved characters from comics, eg Marvel anime, and horror films e.g. Michael Myers. Will’s standout pieces include: “Guardians Reborn,” which transforms superhero teams reinvented across universes, “Stellar Saga,” a warm nod to the genre of space epics, and “The Smile behind the mask,” a massive tribute to horror games such as Silent Hill. A beloved fan of pop-culture, Shrike’s work resonates with audiences for its emotional depth, its rawness and subtle nods to fan culture, with a touch of the macabre or the grotesque for fans of the horror genre. Wil was a welcome addition to our guest list at FandomCon in San Jose this year.

ANIME AND POP CULTURE CONVENTIONS AREN’T JUST EVENTS

They’re experiences, celebrations, and communities all wrapped into one vibrant package. These conventions have evolved from niche gatherings to massive festivals that attract tens of thousands of attendees from every walk of life. And at Spoiler Magazine, we’ve had the privilege of attending many conventions throughout the year, watching this growth first-hand. We believe that anime and pop culture conventions are essential for everyone: whether you’re a fan, a casual observer, or someone completely new to these worlds. Why are these conventions so important? How do they bring people together in ways no other event can? And most importantly, why should you absolutely make it a point to attend?

Let’s dive into what makes anime and pop culture conventions such a vital part of society, and why they’re so much more than just a place to geek out.

1. A CELEBRATION OF SHARED PASSION

At their core, anime and pop culture conventions are a celebration of passion. Whether it’s anime, comics, video games, movies, or TV shows, conventions give fans a space to express their love for the things that matter to them. This shared enthusiasm creates an atmosphere unlike anything else—a collective excitement that’s contagious from the moment you walk through the doors.

Picture this: You’re standing in line to meet your favorite voice actor or taking a selfie with a cosplayer dressed as a character you adore. The energy in the air is electric, because you’re surrounded by people who are just as excited about that character, show, or game, as you are. It’s a celebration of the things that make us happy, and that’s something everyone can get behind.

2. A SAFE SPACE FOR SELFEXPRESSION

For many, these conventions represent a safe space where they can express themselves without fear of judgment. Cosplay—where attendees dress as their favorite characters—has become one of the most iconic aspects of anime and pop culture conventions. Con-goers put an incredible amount of time and effort into creating costumes, and for a few days, they get to embody characters that inspire them.

What’s amazing about cosplay is how inclusive and empowering it is. There’s no right or wrong way to cosplay, and there’s an unspoken rule of respect and acceptance for everyone who participates. People of all ages, genders, and backgrounds can participate, and it’s

not uncommon to see characters reimagined in new and exciting ways. If you’ve ever wanted to live out your dream of becoming a superhero or anime protagonist, conventions are the place to do it, and there’s no better audience to cheer you on.

But it’s not just about cosplay. Conventions are a place where people can unapologetically express their interests. Whether you’re gushing over a rare collectible you found in the dealer’s hall or passionately debating the best episode of *Attack on Titan*, there’s no judgment. Everyone there understands because they’re just as passionate as you are. It’s a beautiful thing to be surrounded by likeminded people who encourage you to be your true, nerdy self.

3. A GATEWAY TO NEW WORLDS AND EXPERIENCES

One of the most thrilling aspects of attending an anime or pop culture convention is the chance to discover something new. You might go in as a diehard fan of one show or franchise and leave with a new appreciation for a completely different genre or medium. Conventions are filled with panels, screenings, and artist alleys that introduce you to fresh perspectives, underground creators, and indie art that you may never have encountered otherwise.

Ever been curious about how voice acting works? There’s probably a panel for that. Interested in Japanese culture but don’t know where to start? There’s likely an exhibit or workshop that will open that door for you. Conventions are a fantastic opportunity to broaden your horizons and immerse yourself in new experiences.

At Spoiler Magazine, we’ve attended conventions year-round, and one of the most exciting things we’ve seen is how fans explore different aspects of pop culture. Fans of Western comics might

discover a love for anime. Gamers might delve into manga for the first time. And those who came for the cosplay might find themselves staying for a fandom pop concert. The convention floor is an open playground of discovery, and that sense of wonder is what makes these events so special.

4. A SENSE OF BELONGING

In a world that can sometimes feel isolating, conventions remind us that we’re not alone. These events foster an unparalleled sense of community, where attendees feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves. Whether you’re going solo or with friends, the second you walk through those convention doors, you become part of the fandom.

For many, conventions are more than just a weekend event—they’re a yearly tradition. People come back year after year, not just for the panels and the merch, but to reconnect with the friends they’ve made over time. It’s like a giant family reunion where

5. POP CULTURE’S INFLUENCE ON SOCIETY

Anime and pop culture conventions aren’t just fun—they’re a reflection of how deeply fandom influences society. What was once considered niche or “geeky” has now become mainstream. Pop culture conventions like San Diego Comic-Con attract major studios, celebrities, and influencers, recognizing that fandoms drive trends and shape the entertainment industry.

What’s important to note is that fandoms have become a cultural force that transcends age, gender, and background. From kids cosplaying as *My Hero Academia* characters to adults revisiting their love for classic *Star Wars* films, fandom conventions cater to everyone. They highlight how integral these stories, games, and characters have become to our lives.

the love of fandom brings everyone together. Even if it’s your first convention, you’ll feel like you’ve found your tribe.

This sense of belonging is crucial. In a time where online communities often connect us, conventions take those virtual bonds and make them real. Meeting people face-to-face who share your love for *Naruto*, *Marvel*, or *Final Fantasy* is an experience that can’t be replicated through a screen. It’s a reminder that fandom isn’t just a hobby—it’s a community.

At Spoiler Magazine, we’ve seen firsthand how conventions impact the broader cultural conversation. They’re not just gatherings for hardcore fans; they’re events where major announcements, sneak peeks, and how new or emerging content is shared with the world. Fandoms now drive consumer trends, and conventions have become the epicenter of those cultural shifts.

6. THEY PROVIDE A BREAK FROM REALITY

Let’s face it—life can be stressful. Between work, school, and everyday

responsibilities, we all need a break. Conventions offer an escape into a world of fun, imagination, and creativity. For a few days, you can forget about the outside world and immerse yourself in a universe where anything is possible.

Whether you’re attending a latenight anime screening, competing in a video game tournament, or walking through an exhibit dedicated to your favorite franchise, conventions are pure fun. They’re designed to give you a break from the monotony of daily life and transport you to a place where fantasy and reality blur.

For those who might be feeling overwhelmed or stressed, conventions provide a much-needed outlet for relaxation and joy. And the best part? You get to share that experience with thousands of others who are just as excited as you are.

7. NETWORKING AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

While conventions are often seen as purely recreational, they can also be a stepping stone for career opportunities, especially

in the entertainment and creative industries. Many artists, writers, game developers, and voice actors get their start by attending conventions, networking with likeminded individuals, and showcasing their work.

For professionals in these industries, conventions are an excellent place to make connections, meet industry leaders, and promote personal projects. If you’re an aspiring artist, writer, or creator, conventions offer a unique platform to build your audience and gain exposure.

The staff at Spoiler Magazine are always excited to see countless creatives find opportunities at conventions that they wouldn’t have encountered anywhere else. Whether it’s meeting a future collaborator or landing a gig with a major studio, conventions can be life-changing for those seeking to break into the industry.

8. THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF CONVENTIONS

Beyond the fun and fandom, conventions have had a significant

economic impact. Major conventions draw in thousands of attendees, filling hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. This influx of visitors can have a positive ripple effect on the local economy, supporting jobs and small businesses.

But the economic impact isn’t just on a local scale. The convention industry itself is massive, generating revenue through ticket sales, vendor spaces, merchandise, and sponsorships. Fans travel from all over the world to attend conventions, making these events a global phenomenon.

At Spoiler Magazine, we believe that conventions are not just about fandom—they’re about communitybuilding and contributing to the economic landscape. By supporting conventions, we’re supporting creativity, innovation, and local businesses.

9. CONVENTIONS ARE FOR EVERYONE

One of the most important things to remember is that anime and pop culture conventions are for everyone. No matter your age, background, or level of fandom, there’s something at these events for you.

Whether you’re a hardcore anime fan, a casual moviegoer, or just someone looking for a fun weekend, conventions are designed to be inclusive and welcoming. Families, couples, friend groups, and solo attendees all find something to enjoy.

We’ve seen firsthand how diverse and inclusive these events can be. Fandom conventions break down barriers and unite people from all walks of life. If you’ve never been to one, we promise you’ll find something to love. his was why we love hosting conventions such as the Fandomcon event in San Jose. Everyone had a blast and it such a wonderful opportunity for fans, celebrities, cosplayers and artists to meet and share in our united bliss. Thankyou to everyone that could make it and we look forward to the next convention.
