Inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s novel Walden, Casa Tiny is a place to escape from society, enjoy a simple life for a couple of days, a week, or a month in this minimal, low-impact, isolated abode. Be part of the tiny-house movement in this luxury designer’s home!
For anyone who doesn’t know Walden, the novel tells the story of Thoreau’s two-year-long experiment of living off the grid in a cabin near Walden Pond. In the case of Casa Tiny, the pond was replaced by the Pacific Ocean and the cabin by a tiny house made of smooth concrete, but you get the picture … Casa Tiny is one of the first projects by young local architect Aranza de Ariño, who erected this concrete beach house with kitchen, sleeping mezzanine and private pool just a stone’s throw from the beach. The roof, floor slabs, stairs, and furniture are all built out of smooth concrete, giving it a robust feel. The other main building material is native parota wood, a dark, honey-coloured timber, used for the doors, windows, closets, and shelves. Two terraces extend out from the house, one encompassing the swimming pool and the other an extension of the kitchen. Its concrete dining table runs from the cooking area to the terrace, encouraging dwellers to throw open the shutters and enjoy nature. “This beautiful, tiny house is the perfect escape,” says Claudio, the owner. “Enjoy the private beach, private pool, and vegetation. Casa Tiny is perfect for a couple or just to relax alone in the hammock. It’s ideal for people looking for a remote place to escape from the city.” The cabin is located near Hotel Escondido and Casa Wabi—an artists’ retreat designed by Pritzker Prize-winning master architect Tadao Ando—, both of which are accessible for guests. It offers a ‘back to nature’ experience, but with modern amenities. Casa Tiny is actually part of Hotel Escondido, an excellent four-star hotel on Escondido Beach, with an impressive rating of 9.5 on Booking.com. This almost virgin beach is located in the tranquil and peaceful shade of Puerto Escondido, Mexico’s lively and busy surf mecca, which annually attracts numerous top international surfers. Usually, they go to Playa Zicatela, the site of the so-called Mexican Pipeline, which means the perfect surfing conditions (albeit with a strong undertow). Considered one of the top ten surfing destinations in the world, Puerto Escondido is an action-packed experience where the town comes to life at night with parties that last until dawn. Escondido Beach, on the other hand, where Casa Tiny and Hotel Escondido are located, is surrounded by complete peacefulness, and therefore attracts a completely different type of clientele.

In the westernmost part of the picturesque Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, lie two wooden buildings that together form Mountain Lodge Tamersc. This mountain hut is an ode to the flair and modern architecture of South Tyrol, combined with a touch of local tradition.
In the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park (Italian: Fanes-Senes-Braies), at a height of 1,400 metres, Mountain Lodge Tamersc welcomes its visitors in an oasis of tranquillity, luxury, style and natural beauty. The exclusive Sports Hotel in San Vigilio di Marebbe, a charming village in the Dolomites of Val Badia, runs the lodge. Eight kilometres from San Vigilio, Mountain Lodge Tamersc is hidden deep in the mountains between the conifer trees. The chalet, which mixes traditional and modern architecture, actually consists of two buildings and can house a maximum of six people on approximately 130 square metres. The main building consists of two floors; the annex building has only one bedroom with two single beds and a shower. What immediately stands out in Mountain Lodge Tamersc is the love for larch wood, which is featured almost everywhere, from the walls and the ceiling to the furniture. “The interior is dominated by strong, clear lines and few frills, and the furniture is intelligently integrated into the house: in the bedroom areas, the wardrobes act as both storage space and room dividers. Doors are hardly recognisable as the wooden walls almost appear to be fully walk-through. A small writing desk is part of the staircase and the kitchen equipment is simple and functional,” say the managers. “Throughout the whole house, the floors, walls, ceilings, staircase and the built-in furniture are made of bright larch wood. The open kitchen and the dining table are made of solid pine. The corner bench and the lounge chairs, in which you can enjoy a drink or two, are a classic South Tyrolean detail. From the leather-covered sofa, you can enjoy impressive views of the meadows, mountains and spruce trees. An open stove set in the combined living and dining area adds the perfect finishing touch to a perfect mountain-hut atmosphere.” The exterior facades of the main and secondary building blend harmoniously into the surroundings of the nature park. In winter and summer, the nature park offers numerous tourist attractions. “Just eight kilometres from the chalet is San Vigilio and the Kronplatz with its twenty-five blue-, twelve red-, and five black-category ski runs where skiing is guaranteed from the end of November to the middle of April. Right outside Mountain Lodge Tamersc, you will find a marvellous, cross-country slope. You couldn’t be closer. In summertime, wild flowers bloom, cows moo pleasantly, horses trot leisurely across the pasture, and the mountains glow in a warm summer sun. Breathtaking hiking and mountain-bike trails await our guests in the FanesSennes-Prags Nature Park.”
