JuliaMorta: Whatconvincedyouto becomethe AmbassadortoPoland? Wasitacarefully plannedstepinyour career, ormoreofasuddenopportunity youdecidedtotake?
JuhaOttman: Ithinkthatitwasboth.Before comingtoPoland,IwastheDeputyDirector GeneralattheDepartmentforEurope.That meantIwasalreadydealingwiththeEmbassy, becauseweoverseealltheembassiesin Europe,apartfromthoseinRussiaand EasternEurope.Also,whenyouareina managerialpositionintheministry,after fouryearsyouhavetostartlookingfora newassignment,eitherintheministryor abroad.Iwasawarethatthispositionin theEmbassyofWarsawwas goingtobe openandIwasveryinterested incoming here.Ofcourse,italwaysdepends onwhat opensupandwhetheryouareselected. Butyes,itwasadeliberatemovebecause Warsawwasontopofthelistofembassies Iappliedto.
JuliaMorta: Wasthisexperiencemostly likeyouhadexpectedittobe,orwere thereanyelementsthatcameasasurprise orwereparticularlychallenging?
JuhaOttman: IthinkIcanreferbackto thefirstquestion.Nobodyexpectedthe COVID-19pandemic.Itseriouslyaffected ouractivitiesbecausenophysicalmeetings werepossible.TheworkoftheEmbassyis limitedwhenyouarenotabletomeetwith peopleandexchangeinformation.Onthe positiveside,welearnedalotfromthis situation,forexampletorelymoreononline meetingsandbecome,tosomeextent, moreefficientbecauseyoudonothaveto

JuliaMorta: Whatlessonshaveyou learnedasadiplomatinPoland?
JuhaOttman: Iwouldsaythatyouneed tohaveagenuineinterestinyourhost countryandfindsomethingthatyoulike inordertopromotebilateralrelations.Itis importanttobepassionateaboutwhat youaredoing,butatthesametime,you havetostayhumble.Wearenothere toteachorpreach,buttolistentoother peopleandlearn.Ontheotherhand,you needtobeabletolookatthingsalittle bitfromanoutsideperspective. Adiplomat’sjobisnotonlytoobserve things,butalsotoinfluence.Ihavealso discoveredhowimportanthistoryisin Poland.InFinland,weoftenforgetabout it,especiallyinbusiness,andhereIthink historyisverypresent.WhenIthinkabout thestartingpointofPolandaftertheSecond WorldWar,howyouhavereconstructed yourcountryfromruinstowhatitisnow, Ihavereallytremendousrespectforthe PolesandPoland.

Finnish-Polishrelations
JuliaMorta:AstheAmbassador,you havetakenpartinmanyeventspromoting FinnishcultureinPoland.Whatdoyou thinkPolescouldlearnfromFinnsinterms oftheapproachtolifeandbusiness?
JuhaOttman: Idon‘tknowifPolescould learnmuchabouttheapproachtolife becauseIthinkthatweareverysimilar, down-to-earthandnature-lovingpeople. Butperhaps,intermsofbusiness,wetend tohaveflatterhierarchiesinFinland. Themosteffectivesolutionsinclude: ahighersalary,newbenefits,saferwork conditions,remoteworkingoption, aScandinavianworkcultureand, ofcourse,amoreattractiveposition andjobtitleitself.

Myadvice?Preparewelltoavoid unpleasantsurprises.Togainasignificant competitiveadvantage,yourcompany needsacutting-edgetalentacquisition strategy.Thegoodnewsis,wecanhelp youwiththat.
HerearetenthingsIlearnedduring morethanadecadeofrecruitingPolish talentsforvariousScandinavian companies:
1. Recruitmentisalsosales.
We,astherecruiters,havetosellourselves tothecandidates.Then,weneedtosell yourcompanyasanattractiveemployer. Finally,youneedtosellyourself.
2. Recruitingrequires detectivework.
Weputalotofeffortintogeneratinglong listsofcandidatesbasedonoursearch mapandkeywords,whichhavetobevery selectiveandpartiallywritteninPolish.
3. Nocopy/paste!
Anothercrucialthingistoalwayssend approachmessagesthatfeelpersonaland thoughtful.Thebestprofiles,especially inIT,receiveseveralmessagesevery week,soouraimisnottobeanother annoyingrecruitmentcompanysending formalmessagesbasedontemplates.
4. Resignationsareeffective fromtheendofthemonth.
Itdoesnotmatterwhetherapersonresigns onthe1stdayorthe30th,inPolandthe startingdateofthenoticeperiodwillrun fromthe1stdayofthesubsequentcalendar month.Thisiswhyalotofcontractsare signedattheendofthemonth,andyour competitorswillbetryingtoclosethedeal duringthattime.Acandidateisusually takingpartinatleastafewrecruitments, somakesurenottolosethembecause oflatedecisions.
5. Youneedacombination approach-adsonjob boardswillnotbeenough.
Usingmultiplerecruitmentstrategies(ads, LinkedInTalentSearch,recommendations, etc.)isamust.Morethan80%ofourhires todayarefoundbydirectsearchorrecommen-dations.Polandcurrentlyhasarecordlow unemploymentrate(around2-3%in2022, accoringtoEurostat), meaningthereare manypassivecandidates whodonotgo throughjobboards.However, combining directsearchwithpublishingadsallows youtofindthebesttalentfromtheentire spectrumofcandidates.Someofthemost recommendedjobportalsarePracuj.pl, OLX,RocketJobsandNoFluffJobs(IT).
6. Insufficientpayisoften adealbreaker.
InPoland, talksgotosalaryearlyon, especiallyifthecandidatecomesfrom directsearch.Itisimportanttofindout earlyifyouarebothonthesamepage. Itcanbealsousefultorememberthat candidatesusuallytalkaboutnetincome whenaskedabouttheirsalary expectations.
7. Polandisnolonger acheaplaborpool.
Insomecases,salariesreachtheEU averageandsomecanevenbehigher thaninFinland.Atthesametime, therangeofsalariesisstillwide.Thebase remunerationisaroundEUR650andtop managersareincreasinglypaidbetter than inFinland.SalariesintheWarsaw areaareapproximately25%higherthan thePolishaverage.
8. B2Bcontractsarequite common,especiallyin salesandIT.
HavingaB2Bcontractmeansthataperson runstheirownsole-tradercompany,sends youmonthlyinvoicesandcoverssocialcosts themselves.However,thePolishgovernment hasbeenattemptingtoincreasethetax baseofsole-tradercompanies.
9. Employeesexpect benefitspackages.
Multisportandprivatehealthinsuranceare standardbenefits.Otherperksinclude thingslikesocialpackagesorcovering commutingexpenses.Aheftybenefits packagecanmakeaworldofdifference–still,apersonisunlikelytochooseajob basedsolelyontheperks.
10. Jobtitlesdomatter.
Managerialpositionsarealwaysindemand, whichisimportanttoconsiderwhilechoosing thenameofaposition.Forexample,ifthe titleinFinlandsayscoordinator,inPoland youmightwanttolookforpeoplethatare managers.Ontheotherhand,ifaperson hasamanagertitleinPoland,thereisless interestingoingbacktocoordinator.
