As a reader of Spooled Up magazine, you’ve no doubt heard of SCT and Bully Dog tuners. But did you know both brands are now part of a larger company called Derive Systems? Spooled Up magazine recently sat down with Derive Systems’ CEO, David Thawley; Vice President of Sales, Scott Barbour; and SCT Founder Chris Johnson. Our conversation provided interesting insights into the men who run one of the most successful automotive electronic component companies in the industry, how they got started, and what the future holds for these iconic brands. S.U.: Let’s start by asking how each of you got involved in automotive in the first place. DAVE: My entrance into automotive started while I was growing up in Minnesota. My father made me do routine maintenance on our car because nobody likes to be turning a wrench and rapping their knuckles when it’s ten degrees below zero, so he got his young son to do it versus crawling under the car himself. Then, as I became driving

www.sinisterdiesel.com

age, he and I worked on my first two vehicles which had been insurance company write-offs. They were two Acura Integras. We had to pull the subframes off both of them and do body work and some engineering to get the cars on the road. That’s probably an important part of my childhood and my relationship with my father. Later I went to college, followed by a decade in the Air Force, followed by work in the business world, so I had a long break from anything automotive. While I was working as a business strategy consultant, one of my clients was eBay Motors. I got involved in helping them define their five year strategy for their automotive parts and accessories business. I had a really good experience with the team there and enjoyed being back in the automotive space. I saw the huge opportunity in e-commerce sales of automotive parts and accessories. I left the consulting firm and went to manage the parts and accessories department at eBay, growing it from a $1.5 billion business to a $3 billion business in just a few years. That was really my entry into any type of technology and it renewed my interest in automotive.

At eBay, we were very active with SEMA, both domestically and internationally, particularly in China. In 2011, SEMA hosted their first event in China, so I went. That’s when I met Rick Trudo, SCT’s former CEO and Jeff Oltz, VP of International Sales for SCT. Ultimately, my relationships with them led to my current position. A private equity firm acquired SCT in the fall of 2013. Shortly after acquiring that business, there was interest from Bully Dog in selling their business, so that was another acquisition that took place in February of 2014. After acquiring those two businesses, there were really three brands that existed: SCT performance; SCT fleet, which we now call Derive efficiency; and Bully Dog. The name Derive was eventually established as the parent company that would house all three brands. I joined Derive as CEO in November, 2014. Because of the companies’ understanding of control systems and ECUs, I knew that we could develop a wide variety of unique and compelling technical solutions that could be widely adopted by consumers. People think of SCT and Bully Dog solely as performance tuning companies, but

they’re actually very sophisticated software and hardware businesses that have the ability to create a range of products and solutions. So joining Derive was really a great opportunity. S.U.: That’s an interesting history. Thanks for clarifying the relationship between Derive, SCT and Bully Dog. Scott, what’s your background? SCOTT: I’ve been a car guy as long as I can remember, back to the very early days of my childhood running R.C. cars around the front yard and breaking them and fixing them, even souping them up by getting parts from the hobby store. My first car was a 1984 Firebird. I was taking my friend to school one day when we heard a strange engine noise. I had to pull over and he said “don’t worry, my father owns a shop. We’ll have it towed over there. He’ll see what’s going on with it.” After school his father took apart the bottom side of the Firebird, all the way down to removing the transmission. He found the crankshaft had cracked. Fortunately, he was

www.sinisterdiesel.com

skilled enough and generous enough to replace everything that was needed to get the car running. Not having money to pay for all that labor, we agreed that I would work at the shop on a part time basis after school and on weekends. I picked up rags around the shop, put down kitty litter on oil spills, and just cleaned up anything I could get my hands on. I did that for about three months at the end of which I was told that the debt was settled, but by that time I was hooked, so I asked the owner if I could continue to come in for minimum wage.

a piece of software that would allow you to tune your car. We called it Advantage. SCT was spawned two years later when we partnered with Superchips, and the rest is history. S.U.: Are you still racing? CHRIS: Off and on. In 2004, I wrecked my Street Outlaw Mustang. This car was a serious commitment and a time sucker. It rolled twentytwo times. If you look for Overpowered Mustang Crash on YouTube, you can watch it. That wreck actually freed me because prior to that, a lot of my time was spent on the car and trying to make sponsors and other people happy. As soon as the car was wrecked, that all went away and I could put that energy into growing SCT.

“Don’t ask me why I needed to go faster. I can’t tell you. It was just something that I wanted to do!”

8

S.U.: How old were you at the time? SCOTT: I was seventeen. He agreed. I continued to work at the shop for the next three years as a mechanic and I started to get interested in technology. Soon, I was getting into electrical diagnostics and doing print outs on ECUs and following wiring diagrams. Everybody in the shop really hated diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical issues, but I really enjoyed it, so I got all of those that came in. I left the shop when I entered college, earning a degree in information systems from the University of Texas. I continued to play with cars on my own time and became a hobbyist type of enthusiast at that point. My career path took me to the East coast and then to California. All the while, I was tuning cars on the side, going to dyno shops and performing calibrations as a consultant. Eventually, I landed a sales leadership role at LinkedIn. While there, I was sent an email from a former colleague who knew Dave Thawley. The email said, ‘Hey I think you ought to talk to this guy. He’s doing something in automotive.’ So, that’s how I got introduced to Dave. It was an opportunity to take what I learned to do at work and combine it with what I loved to do after work. So I joined Derive in January of 2015. S.U.: Sounds like many things came together at just the right time for you. How about you, Chris? When did you have your ‘aha’ moment about automotive? CHRIS: Even before I was sixteen, I was working on my cousin’s and friend’s race cars. Later, I got a Buick Regal which was modified with a turbocharger. Then, in 1990, I owned a 1989 Taurus SHO that did 144 miles per hour. I re-soldered the memory out of the ECU and started sifting through it to find the value to be able to go faster than 144. Don’t ask me why I needed to go faster. I can’t tell you. It was just something that I wanted to do!

S.U.: Let’s talk a minute about corporate culture. Dave and Scott, I’m curious about how your vision, methods and procedures differed from the way SCT and Bully Dog were doing business when you both came on board. What challenges have you faced implementing a new corporate culture? SCOTT: One of the observations we made coming into the business was that the sales teams wore many hats. They wore a technical support hat, they wore an inside sales hat, they wore an outside sales hat, and they essentially tried to solve every problem themselves without a lot of specialization. That’s one of the things that we changed early last year. Now every individual has a specialty. Of course, everyone is encouraged to help one another in times of need. But each has a specialty and specific measurements against which they are incentivized and rewarded to accomplish their specific goals or their specific tasks. In addition, we didn’t have a customer relationship management system in place. Now our CRM is the life blood of our sales team. S.U.: Any other changes you had to bring to the company, perhaps even philosophical, that you plan to implement? SCOTT: Not only did we institute the customer relationship management system, but we also embraced technology so all the teams can cohesively interact virtually. We now use instant messaging, video teleconferencing and screen sharing technology to allow the teams in Idaho to interact with the teams in Florida as if they’re all sitting together. Communication is key to any integration and any team’s success, so the more friction you can remove from day-today interactions the better. We really embraced modern communication technologies so that in-office and off-site employees can interact seamlessly as if they are working in the same physical location.

“In 2004, I wrecked the car that was my time sucker. It rolled twenty-two times”

S.U.: And once you accomplished that? CHRIS: In the early nineties, I connected with other people with similar talents on the internet. Together we worked on software and tried to figure out how these cars worked. In 1993, I started a company that did chips specifically for Mustangs and other Ford vehicles. I used the income from that to fund my racing. Then in 2001, I joined with a couple of partners to develop

www.sinisterdiesel.com

S.U.: How entrenched was the old culture? How difficult was it to get people to shift, not only their way of using technology, but also the philosophical values you described? DAVE: Both SCT and Bully Dog were very proud in the way

they did things, both companies were extremely successful, so there needed to be a meeting in the middle. We had to spend a lot of time getting people to communicate openly and feel empowered to share their opinions, also to push back if they thought things weren’t being done in a constructive manner. We wanted people to understand that by combining the strengths of both companies, the end result would be significantly greater than the sum of the two parts.

can do a good job. If they take it and own it and run with it, I’m perfectly O.K. with that. The folks that have been brought in are really doing a good job of trying to shake up the environment so that we can develop and bring some new things to the table.

“The folks that have been brought in are really doing a good job of trying to shake up the environment so that we can develop and bring new things to the table!”

S.U.: Altogether, how many people are in the company? DAVE: We’ve got 150 employees overall. Roughly 75 are in Florida and about 75 are in Idaho. Some of Scott’s team are not located in either of those locations and a couple of us spend quite a bit of time in Silicon Valley. We’ve had a couple of people in Washington, D.C. and one in Hong Kong, but Florida and Idaho are definitely the epicenters. S.U.: Chris, since Dave and Scott shared their experiences coming into the company as outsiders, including their observations about the corporate culture and the company’s processes and procedures, I’m curious to ask you a similar question. As SCT’s founder, what were you hoping Dave, Scott and the new team could accomplish? What shifts have you seen in the thinking, the philosophy and the running of the company both on a dayto-day basis and in terms of an overall vision. DAVE: I think I’m more interested in this answer than you are! CHRIS: When I was running the company, it was a different time. The industry was a small group of mom-and-pop companies. Everything that we were doing was new and had never been generally applied to this market before. Now there are a lot of people in the space. Our new team is tasked with bringing a level of professionalism that we have not generally had in our organization before. S.U.: How does that feel? CHRIS: I’m OK with it because since 2006, I’ve been focused on handing off responsibilities as long as others

S.U.: Chris, we’ve talked about SCT and Bully Dog. Can you clarify the relationship between SCT and Superchips? CHRIS: Originally, SCT and Superchips were partners. We used to be called Superchips Custom Tuning. Superchips bought a piece of software we developed called Advantage and they were 25% partners in our company. Superchips was sold to private equity sometime in 2005, and in 2006 they exited ownership of SCT. About a year later we had some people that were brought to us that were promising to help grow the business and to put a substantial capital injection into the business. So we partnered with this private equity group and we were with them until 2013.

9

S.U.: What happened at that point? CHRIS: We exchanged into a larger private equity group. Dave and Scott are part of that team. The firm also provided additional equity to be able to grow us to the next level. S.U.: You briefly touched on the new products that are coming out. Let’s talk about those, what they are, how they fit into your product line and how they fit into your vision of the future of the company. SCOTT: Two exciting products are coming out this year. The first is a handheld unit under the Bully Dog brand. It’s called the BDX. This new unit is completely redesigned and incorporates a new methodology of firmware delivery that we’re calling firmwareon-demand. What that means is that the user of the tuner will have one hundred percent certainty that he or she is receiving the very latest and greatest firmware that we have available for that vehicle. The handheld includes a Wi-Fi chip and includes an installation wizard that walks customers through a very seamless process of acquiring the proper firmware for their vehicle and then flashing the updated calibration to their vehicle. It’s our first product that supports all of the

www.sinisterdiesel.com

vehicle applications for Bully Dog and SCT. So if you’d like to tune your Cummins truck, you can absolutely do that with the Bully Dog BDX. Or if you’d like to tune your F-150 or F-250, or legacy SCT or Bully Dog application coverage, you can. Once again this is the first product brought to market that’s really a team effort that includes coverage for all of the applications we support as a business.

10

S.U.: That is exciting. DAVE: The GTX is our other new product that is the first of its kind in this market. It includes Wi-Fi technology and features a high definition capacitive color touch screen that mounts within the vehicle cabin, either on an A-pillar or on a windshield mount. It is the highest revolution tuner you can buy and it incorporates the same firmware-on-demand technology that I discussed for the BDX. It’s being sold under both the SCT and Bully Dog brands and like the BDX, it covers all of the applications that are addressed by both brands. S.U.: It sounds like you’ve been working hard on some new technology. SCOTT: We have. We are embracing Wi-Fi in a big way, and you’ll continue to see that technology proliferate in other products we’re bringing to market this year. DAVE: We’ve invested heavily in adding a new layer of sophistication to the GTX. For example, this device will connect to a magnetic mount so you don’t have to disconnect wires and you can very easily put it in the glove box. This really creates an experience that is much more in line with modern technology. S.U.: I know that Sinister Diesel is happy to have it available on the Sinister website. Without giving away any competitive secrets, what do you see for 2017, ’18, ’19? Do you have visions and ideas for the short, near, and long term regarding new products or new developments for the company? DAVE: There’s a lot coming down the pipeline. We’ll continue to focus on refinement of the core products, both handheld units and touch screen units in the performance space. We’re also coming up with unique and innovative products for the efficiency customers we’ve talked about. We’re taking our knowledge base within ECUs and control systems and applying that to new applications and products from both SCT and Bully Dog. CHRIS: We’re also going to be focused on the cloud, so all of these devices, GTX, BDX, are going to get all of their updates from the cloud via Wi-Fi without any real software intervention from a PC. We’ve also

www.sinisterdiesel.com

adjusted prices. SCOTT: That’s right. The Bully Dog GT diesel part number 40420 was historically advertised at $593. That price had been in place for eight years. We determined that we had an opportunity to be the best value in diesel tuning with an adjustment down to $449. Since that price change, it has become one of our best selling products. Also starting in January, the fifty state legal Bully Dog gas EO device, part number 40410, got the same price point as the non-EO device part number 40417. So both of those are now $429. That’s a reduction from $499. CHRIS: People may also be interested in GT custom tuning. SCOTT: Yes. Last year we enabled custom tuning on a number of applications on the Bully Dog products. SCT has a long history of being able to do custom tuning, but that hasn’t been the case with Bully Dog. So in 2015, as part of the integration we enabled custom tuning on the Bully Dog GT units. The BDX as well as the GTX will support custom tuning right out of the box. S.U.: It sounds like there are a lot of things happening quickly. DAVE: What you’re seeing is the upside of finishing this post-merger integration process and really getting our engineering and business teams aligned across both locations. All of a sudden we have a lot of engineers that have increased bandwidth to go after new applications and new technology. We’re going to continue to invest in that part of the business and add new application coverage. We’re also going to concentrate on supporting new OEMs. I also think you’re going to see a lot more benefits come out of our company due to having a lot of these engineers working off of Cummins platforms. S.U.: Well, I know everyone at Sinister Diesel is excited about everything you’re rolling out. Thanks to all of you for so much information about your personal backgrounds, the background of the businesses, and what lies ahead. We’ll certainly keep our readers up to date on all the changes you’re making.

Behind the Scenes at Sinister Diesel

How does an upstart diesel performance parts company go from selling a few components on eBay, to becoming the number one manufacturer and retailer of high performance aftermarket components in the diesel industry? Here’s the fascinating story about the explosive growth of the company that did just that, as well as the parallel expansion of the diesel aftermarket industry in general.

S inister Diesel co-founders Michael Mitchell and Brian George

came from divergent backgrounds when they first met in 1998. At that time, Michael was working at his father’s manufacturing company and Brian was involved in the boating and marine industry. Their paths crossed during a chance business meeting in the Sacramento area where they both lived. Michael and Brian hit it off right away. It wasn’t long before they were exploring opportunities to collaborate on special projects. Eventually, a business partnership developed. Together, Michael and Brian started manufacturing and

www.sinisterdiesel.com

distributing parts for both the marine and the medical industries. They also dabbled in automotive parts by manufacturing and retailing grilles and other exterior parts for trucks under the MKM Customs name. A happy coincidence led to a turning point for their company when Michael’s 2003 Ford Excursion needed repairs. Along with the fixes, Michael decided to boost the Excursion’s performance by adding aftermarket components. While shopping around for one of those parts, Michael and Brian discovered they could manufacture it themselves and that it would be superior to anything that was currently on the market. They also determined that rather than making just one, it would be more cost effective to produce several and sell them on eBay. It was a decision that would pave the way for the company’s rapid expansion. The parts sold out in a matter of days on eBay. So, Michael and Brian manufactured more and more parts.

Michael Mitchell

Brian George

They also began to add additional products to the line, marketing them all under their new Sinister Diesel brand name. Aftermarket diesel components that combined high quality with high performance and reliability were exactly what the market was looking for. To add a final unique feature to the parts, Michael and Brian began to finish them in their now familiar Sinister Blue color. It’s a look that dresses up the engine bay, providing a clean, contemporary look under the hood and making Sinister brand parts instantly recognizable. The high performance and quality of the components had diesel enthusiasts asking for more. Word of mouth spread, and demand for Sinister Diesel parts grew. Given the growth and professionalism of today’s aftermarket diesel parts

14

industry, it’s easy to forget that just seven years ago, diesel performance parts were manufactured mostly by small local shops on an as-needed basis. Quality was inconsistent, delivery times were unpredictable, and performance was unreliable. In addition, customer service was often an afterthought, if given any thought at all. Because Michael and Brian were diesel truck enthusiasts themselves, they understood all this and were determined to meet not only the quality, performance and reliability needs of enthusiasts, but the market’s customer service needs as well. Therefore, even though the company was only a handful of people at the time, Michael and Brian made sure that there was always someone manning the phones to provide personal sales support, answer customer questions and even provide technical advice. Of course, by then Michael and Brian were selling not just on eBay. Their website, MKMCustoms.com was online and thriving, selling all the Sinister Diesel brand parts the

www.sinisterdiesel.com

company could manufacture. It wasn’t long before the number of Sinister sales outlets grew to include Amazon.com as well. As they looked to the future, Michael and Brian realized that, though the company was growing and doing well, moving to the next level would require selling parts made by other manufacturers. Michael and Brian also knew that one of the first performance upgrades most diesel enthusiasts make to their truck is the addition of a tuner, so they began to evaluate the various tuner brands available at the time. It wasn’t long before they determined that SCT Performance was the first brand they wanted to add to their product line. After preliminary introductions, Michael, Brian and the team at SCT worked out a distribution arrangement that has been a major success for everyone involved. Seven years later, SCT is still one of Sinister’s top selling brands. The diesel truck industry is a close-knit world. That was especially true when Sinister got started. Truck enthusiasts were a small and loyal market; manufacturers knew each other (often personally); and retailers and distribution companies were well aware of up-and-coming manufacturers and new brands. Sinister benefited from all of those factors in a number of ways. First, word of mouth among truck owners spread as to the quality, performance and service Sinister offered. Second, manufacturers started reaching out to Sinister for ways to collaborate and create mutually beneficial relationships. Third, retailers looked to Sinister as a reliable source of high quality aftermarket parts for their customers. Fourth, wholesale distributors began knocking on Sinister’s door, providing opportunities to distribute Sinister brand products to shops and retailers in thousands of communities that were otherwise difficult for Sinister to reach. This fourth factor really accelerated Sinister’s growth. The market penetration provided by wholesale distributors greatly increased demand for Sinister products. Propelled by that demand, Michael and Brian began adding even more production capabilities and administrative staff. As sales expanded, the company’s facilities expanded too. In 2009, the company occupied under 4,500 square feet of manufacturing and office space; had half a dozen employees; and possessed just a few essential machines. By 2011, the company was adding staff, office and manufacturing space, and machinery. Today, Sinister occupies over 30,000 square feet of office/manufacturing space just east of Sacramento in Roseville, California. In addition, the number of employees grows each month and

Sinister anticipates adding even more space in the next two years. With the diesel industry growing, it was predictable that the government would begin to involve itself. Stricter enforcement of both federal and state emissions regulations began to have an impact on the entire industry. Certain popular parts offered by some manufacturers were suddenly deemed illegal for street use while stiff penalties and fines were imposed on manufacturers for production and distribution of other parts. The overall result was a chilling effect on the industry, and even a dip in overall sales for a period of time. Michael and Brian had the foresight to see these events coming. That’s why, in 2012, they committed to the challenge of producing parts that met governmental emission standards, while pushing performance and reliability standards to new levels. In 2013, Sinister was granted an Executive Order number by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for its EGR cooler. The EO certified the part was compliant with California emissions regulations and could therefore be sold in all 50 states. Additional parts followed and today Sinister continues to develop new components that meet or exceed state and federal regulations. Also In 2012, Sinister began to focus on creating a new, state of the art website. “It was time for Sinister Diesel to have its own platform,” says Brian George. “It took 18 months to get it the way we wanted,” says Michael Mitchell, “but finally, in late 2013 SinisterDiesel.com went live.” The site features cutting edge programming and customer centered features such as live chat, advanced search, a customer image gallery, ratings and reviews, video, downloadable instructions, and more. “The funny thing is,” Brian adds, “the website is a never ending project. We have more, exciting things planned for it this year.” It is safe to say that the relationship between Sinister Diesel, and the diesel industry in general, has been a symbiotic one. The growth in one has helped fuel growth in the other. There has been a synergy that has driven expansion of both the industry and Sinister Diesel at the same time. For example, Sinister continues to develop and produce advanced techology products that boost performance while at the same time complying with state and federal emissions standards. That benefits the industry as a whole by having a

growing number of parts available nationally that diesel truck owners need. That in turn builds loyalty, enthusiasm and an increased customer base for the entire diesel industry. At the same time, Sinister benefits as truck manufacturers add diesel models; diesel fuel becomes more accessible and affordable; and diesel events spring up around the country driving interest and new customers to the diesel market. Ultimately, that all increases the pool of customers needing aftermarket diesel parts. It’s a win-win for the company and the industry. Perhaps most importantly, the way Sinister does business has changed the way the aftermarket industry does business as a whole. Sinister’s emphasis on customer service, technical support and a state-of-theart website has set a high standard for companies in the market. It’s not an exaggeration to say that today’s customer expectations for high performance, quality and service have been set by Sinister Diesel, and much of Sinister’s success is a result of meeting those needs from the start. With such a history of growth and success, the obvious question is what’s next for Sinister Diesel? Short term, Michael Mitchell and Brian George both believe that at this stage of the company’s development, it makes sense to focus on streamlining and managing the company’s current processes and functions. “Of course, we’re very pleased with the tremendous growth of the company,“ says Brian. “Now it’s time to focus on managing that growth and laying the groundwork for the future.” What does that future hold? Greater production capabilities, a larger facility and the addition of key staff members are all in the plans. There will undoubtedly be continued updates and improvement to the Sinister Diesel website and the services Sinister offers. Spooled Up magazine and a new Sinister parts catalog are two examples of the kind of innovative thinking and added value the company offers diesel truck owners. Michael and Brian have also hinted at big changes for the MKM site for 2016 to serve an even wider range of enthusiasts. Michael adds, “Although it’s important to plan for the future, we also try to stay focused on the here-and-now. Otherwise, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important today.” Says Brian, “We could only imagine this kind of success when we began seven years ago. So for now, we’re happy living the dream.”

aFe Diesel Fuel System aFe is now shipping the DFS780 Diesel Fuel System, their newest segment of the business. This latest application is for the 2003-2004.5 Dodge Diesel Trucks L6-5.9L (td). The DFS780 was designed from the beginning to eliminate weaknesses found in other “fuel transfer” systems. aFe has spent almost four years engineering the best, most reliable system available. Depending on the specific application, aFe offers features such as boost-activated fuel flow increase, a reliable “marine grade” motor, a high-impact polycarbonate “sight glass” to visually check fuel condition and Viton seals, to name a few.

Top 5 Ways to Improve Your Truck’s Performance

Factory turbos supply your engine with only two to three times the amount of air it would otherwise draw in, but as you add component upgrades, you need even more fresh, cold air. Too little air and you’ll notice black smoke, high EGTs, and poor fuel economy. Of course, if your truck came with no turbo in the first place, your need for airflow is even greater. An aftermarket turbo upgrade will provide you the added airflow you need.

Whether it’s used for work, towing, hauling, racing, or daily driving, everyone wants better performance from their truck. Upgrading components can help by giving you increased horsepower and better torque. But with all the aftermarket parts (and options) available, it can be hard to know which upgrades to do first. Here are our top 5 component recommendations to boost the performance of your truck.

1.

2.

Upgrade Your Exhaust. Upgrading your diesel truck’s stock exhaust to an aftermarket turbo back single exhaust kit is one of the easiest ways to enhance your truck’s overall performance. An aftermarket exhaust allows your Powerstroke, Duramax, or Cummins engine to breathe more efficiently, leading to a drop in exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs) and a boost in horsepower and torque. Replacing your current restrictive exhaust with an aftermarket exhaust kit will also give you that smooth, deep resonant sound that every diesel truck owner desires. There are many top brands on the market to choose from including aFe, Flo~Pro, MBRP, and Sinister’s own line of performance exhaust kits. Whichever brand you choose, in addition to performance, you should consider longevity. Although an aluminized exhaust is an economical choice in most circumstances, if you live in snowy climates where roads are often salted, a Sinister exhaust kit made of precision cut and mandrel bent T409 stainless steel is right for you. It will provide many years of improved truck performance while resisting rust and corrosion, thereby reducing the need for costly replacement or repairs. Upgrade Your Air Intake. You can boost the performance of your truck by making sure it’s running as efficiently and cleanly as possible. That’s because the more efficiently your engine runs, the lower your exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs), and the better your fuel economy will be, all while providing a gain in horsepower. But achieving peak efficiency is easier said than done. The engine bay of your diesel truck is a tough environment. It’s full of heat that can rob power and performance. The solution is to get the greatest amount of cold, dense air into your engine as possible. To do that, you need a cold air intake. Not only is a diesel cold air intake one of the most common and least expensive performance modifications you can make, it is also the upgrade that brings the most benefit because it increases the flow of cold, dense air to your engine, leading to better combustion, more power output, and better fuel economy. As with exhaust kits, there are a wide variety of manufacturers producing high quality cold air intakes including AEM, AFE, AirAid, and Bully Dog. Plus, Sinister Diesel manufactures their own cold air intakes. The Sinister line is unique in a number of ways, including being manufactured from aluminum rather than plastic. You can learn more about all of the available cold air intakes by checking out the catalog section in the back of this magazine, or by contacting Sinister Diesel directly.

3.

Add a Tuner. One of the simplest ways to increase your horsepower and torque is with a plug-in diesel tuner. Tuners can be installed in just minutes without the use of tools and will get you the best performance gains for your dollar. Diesel tuners, including chips, modules and programmers all work by modifying stock engine parameters like injector pulse width, boost pressure, and fuel rail pressure while raising the performance of your truck well beyond its factory settings. This means more power in lower RPM ranges, less downshifting, more complete combustion and better fuel economy. Not only will your truck perform better, but it will also be more efficient, saving you money in the long run. Although most tuners come with tunes already written, to maximize benefits, consider having custom tunes written. These tunes will give you the specific performance you require from your truck based on your personal needs. Contact Sinister for information about all the top tuner brands including SCT, Bully Dog, Edge, Banks, and others, as well as about having custom tunes written for your truck.

www.sinisterdiesel.com

Upgrade Your Turbo. As we mentioned in the air intake section, the more air you can force into an engine, the more power it will make. Turbochargers use a turbine and a compressor to force-feed air to the engine, significantly boosting performance.

The turbo size you choose depends on a few factors. Bigger turbos can produce more total boost, but they also take longer to ‘spool up’ and therefore provide less boost at lower engine speeds. One solution is to install a smaller, ball bearing turbo. These turbos increase boost while spooling up more quickly because of their low internal drag. Another solution is a compound turbo system. With two turbochargers working together, you can get the benefits of a small, quick spooling turbo along with the power of a larger performance turbo.

5.

Upgrade Your Injectors. We’ve discussed increasing air flow to your engine, but the truth is that If you want to make more power, you are going to have to push more fuel to the engine as well. Upgrading your fuel injectors allows you to do just that by pumping more fuel into the engine with each injection pulse. Upgraded injectors can also have enhanced spray patterns & higher injection pressures, both resulting in improved performance. Completely replacing your stock injectors is one way to make your upgrade. Another is to install larger injector nozzles. Upgraded nozzles will increase fuel flow to your engine. It’s important to remember that an injector upgrade will feed more fuel to your engine. More fuel requires more air to avoid high EGTs, black smoke and other performance issues. Before changing your injectors, be sure you’ve considered the exhaust, air intake, tuner and turbo recommendations previously suggested. Of course, there are dozens (if not hundreds) of upgrades you can make to your truck to improve performance. The five listed above are a great place to start. Contact Sinister Diesel to discuss which upgrades are right for you.
