WELCOME KIT SPORTACCORD CONVENTION SAINT PETERSBURG, 26-31 MAY 2013
ABOUT
SPORTACCORD CONVENTION SportAccord Convention is the world’s premier annual event at the service of sport, focused on driving positive change internationally, and dedicated to engaging rights holders, organising committees, cities, businesses and other organisations in the development of sport. SportAccord Convention provides delegates a unique opportunity to meet leading figures from the world of sport in one place at one time. It enables participants to conduct important face to face discussions and accelerate their organisation’s business objectives. SportAccord Convention assists organisations in the scheduling of their meetings by providing a networking tool allowing them to identify prospects in advance and create a schedule of meetings to maximise their time on site. •
Developing Nations attend the event to speak with sporting leaders to discuss the development of sporting programmes in their country.
•
Developed Nations meet International Federations to offer hosting solutions for their events.
•
Businesses and service providers to world sport use the event to access International Federations and Organising Committees to discuss and agree current and potential working partnerships.
•
International Federations and IOC members hold EB and AGM meetings during SportAccord Convention as well as ad hoc meetings with the wider sports business community.
The conference element of the SportAccord Convention offers all delegates the opportunity to listen to leading business figures and renowned athletes from the upper echelon of world sport. Through inspirational talks and presentations, these high profile individuals share their experiences and insight on global themes shaping the future of world sport. All participants are invited by the host city to enjoy and explore its culture via an extensive, high quality social programme consisting of multiple events and activities across the entire week. SportAccord Convention is a 6-day gathering of 1700-2000 leading representatives from international sport. The annual convention is held in a different country each year and encompasses the Congress and General Assemblies of over 100 International Sports Federations (IFs) and their related Associations. These Federations hold the rights to scores of World Championships and other annual sporting events. SportAccord Convention’s goal is to offer the international sports community an annual occasion to gather together in an exclusive and authoritative networking environment, to build relationships, expand horizons and broaden sport’s collective endeavours. The event was created and owned by what was then known as the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and the Association of International Olympic Winter Federations (AIOWF). The decision was taken to re-brand the GAISF organisation, coinciding with the start of a dynamic new organisational strategy, with the name changing to SportAccord. To make the distinction between the entities clear, the annual SportAccord event will be known as the SportAccord Convention and it will continue to be managed separately as before. SportAccord Convention was originally launched in 2003 in order for the Associations and the IFs to increase efficiency by holding all of their annual meetings at the same time and place, and also as a commercial platform whereby the sports industry could have ‘one-stop-shop’ access to all the world governing bodies and their key decision-makers. An Exhibition and a Conference were created in conjunction with the meetings, to encourage networking and facilitate understanding within the international sporting community. Since 2003, when SportAccord Convention first took place in Madrid, the event has been held in Lausanne, Berlin, Seoul, Beijing, Athens, Denver, Dubai, London and Québec City allowing attendees to experience the culture and hospitality of colleagues all over the world, and event-owners to visit cities and venues interested in hosting sporting events. This year, SportAccord Convention will take place in Saint Petersburg from 26 - 31 May 2013. 2
SportAccord Convention receives the full support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its President, who have agreed to organise the spring meetings of the IOC Executive Board at each Convention to date. In addition to its Executive Board Meeting, the IOC also hold their annual joint meetings with SportAccord (formerly GAISF), ASOIF and AIOWF during the annual gathering. Over the past decade, SportAccord Convention has become one of the key fixtures on the international sporting calendar. But the event itself has now evolved into a SportAccord Community… a diverse group of people from across the sports spectrum, and from all over the world, who value this unique opportunity to learn, to grow, and most of all to share – not only their varied experiences, but the cumulative wealth of knowledge everyone brings with them to our annual gatherings. SportAccord Convention continues to develop additional offerings – such as SportAccord Convention TV, SportAccord Convention – The Annual, City Forum, LawAccord, The Daily event publication and the IF Forum, held in November – intended to be invaluable resources for everyone within the sports movement. For more information on these, and on plans for this year’s event in Saint Petersburg, please refer to our website www.sportaccordconvention.com. We look forward to seeing you soon at one of our events!

FAQ SAINT PETERSBURG CURRENCY You will need Russian Roubles (RUR), and you can even get them in your home country. Please enquire at your local post office or currency exchange agents. However, it is simple and convenient to change either Euros or US dollars once you arrive in Russia. Traveller’s cheques can be changed, but often with difficulty. All major credit cards are accepted in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Currently there are no restrictions for amounts of money that can be brought into Russia. Any sum of money over $10,000 brought into the country (including traveller’s cheques) must be declared at customs. Individual residents are allowed to export foreign currencies in a lump cash sum up to $10,000. All exported cash assets above $3,000 must be declared. DRINKING WATER It is not advisable to drink the water in Russia unless it has been boiled or purified. You can buy bottled drinking and sparkling water at any supermarket or street kiosk in all cities and villages. CLIMATE AND WEATHER The month of May is characterized by rising daily high temperatures, with daily highs increasing from 14°C to 18°C over the course of the month, exceeding 23°C or dropping below 9°C only one day in ten.
Daily High and Low Temperature in May
The daily average low (blue) and high (red) temperature with percentile bands (inner band from 25th to 75th percentile, outer band from 10th to 90th percentile). Daily low temperatures range from 3°C to 8°C, falling below 1°C or exceeding 11°C only one day in ten. The probability that precipitation will be observed at this location varies throughout the month. Precipitation is most likely around May 31, occurring in 53% of days.

Daily Sunrise & Sunset with Twilight in May
TIPS Tipping is quite common in Russia. Although you normally will not find any service charge in your restaurant bill, many visitors do leave tips to show appreciation for a job well done and this is certainly acceptable. Such gestures are voluntary and at the sole discretion of the visitor. ELECTRICITY The standard voltage is 220V, 50Hz AC. Sockets require a Continental or European plug with two round pins. Pack a travel adaptor. PRACTICALITIES Will I be able to communicate in English? English is widely spoken in good restaurants, expensive shops and in the busier, tourist areas of Russia. Most hotel staff around the country also speak English. This is, however, not always the case in regular bars, standard shops and amongst most taxi drivers or metro staff. Nevertheless, most people are responsive and will try to help you even without language knowledge. Cyrillic is the alphabet used in the Russian language. A phrasebook detailing the Cyrillic alphabet is recommended for travel. What should I bring from Russia and where can I buy it? Russian souvenirs are authentic, inexpensive and usually well-made. The most recognisable Russian souvenir is, without a doubt, the matryoshka doll: multiple dolls, one inside another, like the layers of an onion. Small black boxes painted with traditional scenes, called palekh, are also very popular. Grocery stores are open from 8 or 9 am until 8 or 9 pm, and department stores are open from 10 or 11 until 7 or 8. Department stores may be closed on Sundays. How to use the Metro in Russia? The metro is the easiest and quickest way to get around in big cities in Russia. All metro stations are easily found by the “M” signs. Generally the metro system is very logical and easy to use. There are also information points at most of the stations with intercom connection to the station controller which can be used for assistance (however do not expect everyone understands English). Please note, most signboards are in Russian, however the maps of the metro system have Latin transcription. Please find below some useful translations: •
Exit – ВЫХОД (Vikhod)
•
Interchange – ПЕРЕХОД (Perekhod)
•
Ticket office – КАССА (Kassa)
•
Ticket – БИЛЕТ (Bilet)
Metro stations are normally open for passengers daily from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Passengers must pay the fare every time they enter the metro. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office at any station entrance and are available for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 or more rides.
