President’s Corner I’d like to say a few words about my mental health. I’m doing fine – thank you - because I have an excellent therapist. I take time with my therapist to sort out my thoughts and feelings. Taking the time to do this is important to everybody’s successes in life. He (my therapist) doesn’t say much, but he is a SHAGYA and this makes him a superb mirror, reflecting my attitude and a path to meaningful perspectives. What can we accomplish? While many pay for a certified therapist, I just pay for his room and board and other various expenses. For this, he gets me moving and stretching, my body and mind, and he assists me in my quest to get more in touch with nature. I also enjoy meeting people who see the wonderful and superb attributes of the Shagya. I highly recommend this type of therapy. This booklet is the ticket to finding your own handsome, caring and charismatic therapist. I encourage you to make contact with the breeders listed. Talk to them about your dreams and aspirations. Think of them as counselors willing to guide you to the right horse, or even help you build one from scratch, if you wish to take the slow route to perfection. ASAV members have put a great amount of hard work into the promotion of the Shagya breed and this Breeder’s Guide. They know Shagya - they just need to know more about you and your goals in life. Do yourself a favor and call one or two of the listed contacts today. Forget about finding the perfect certified therapist, what you need is a Shagya Arabian! This is an ASAV first -- preparing an information booth at this prestigious AHA Sport Horse National show. Members are looking forward for the opportunity to explain and expound the merits of the Shagya breed. The purebred Arabian and the purebred Shagya Arabian are joined together in their heritage and have much to offer each other. New Shagya Arabian breeders are a necessity to preserve this rare breed. In the past few years, Shagyas have won international events and the interest is very real. Ask the volunteers who are manning the ASAV booth and they will gladly converse with you about their passion, the Shagya Arabian breed. Enjoy the show and good luck to all of you! A Short History of the Shagya Arabian The Shagya is an endangered and rare breed that came into being in 1789 when the Austria Hungarian monarchy, demanded a superior calvary horse. Desert bred Arabian stallions were bred to the native mares and a brutal selection process produced the breed as it is known today. The Shagya has excellent conformation and a kind and willing attitude. Larger bone, strong back and loins, and excellent legs and feet are commonly observed in this Arabian based breed. Demanding military and endurance tests allowed only the best of the best to reproduce. WWII decimated the population and only recently has the world population reached about 2000. They are wonderful family horses and very versatile as they can excel in jumping, eventing, dressage, endurance or as dependable trail horses. Many are winning world championships in endurance races. They have world championships at WEG, the Tevis, President’s Cups and other prestigious events. Whatever your chosen discipline you will find that the Shagya is a natural! It is a breed defined by a blue print for the ideal riding type horse, and the Shagya is certainly proof that the Hungarian Stud masters achieved their goal. Probably the greatest use of the Shagya breed has been as an outcross improvement for other breeds. Many Shagya stallions have been approved and are found in several warm blood stud books. RAMZES, founder of the “R” line was an Anglo Shagya. His dam was purebred Shagya and sire was a Thoroughbred. ASAV is the first registry to recognize this powerful cross and has an Anglo Shagya studbook. Windfall II is by Habicht, a strong Shagya line through LAPIS. The ASAV’s Appendix Shagya Arabian Studbook records the linage of all half Arabian (purebred) and half Shagya Arabian horses in the USA. This studbook compliments the AHA Half Arabian Registry. horses equally as half-arabians, can be registered in both registries, compete and receive awards. Shagya blood adds refinement without losing the height and seems to reinforce the gene for a steady, non-reactive manner. steadiness, more concentration and improved ability to please their partner. It is rare to meet any Shagya owner who does not expound upon this unique and elusive quality.

Endurance News

Miguel Vila Ubach, (ESP), and Hungares Win Individual Gold ~ FEI World Equestrian Games Today in Aachen, the Spanish rider, Miguel Vila Ubach (ESP), 33, aboard the grey SHAGYA gelding Hungares*, won the Individual world title in Endurance. This is the first time since the FEI World Endurance Championships began in 1986 that a Spanish rider wins the supreme title. This definitely was an emotional victory. After 160 km in six loops and a riding time of 9 hours 12 min., 27 seconds, the winning pair entered the main stadium to cross the finishing line under torrential downpour. The crowd cheered loudly the new World Champion and the tears of rider and crew were streaming down with the rain drops. “I knew we were good but I don’t believe I’m here today,” a happy Miguel declared at the press conference that followed his arrival. “I was a European Champion back in 1999 and I’ve been dreaming for another title ever since but I’d never have thought it would be this one.” The pair were in 47th position after the fourth vet gate but this had not discouraged them. On the contrary, they had been saving their strength for the last 13-km loop. “I knew my horse could fly over the last bit. We rode out of the vetgate, I saw the French girls and decided to follow them as I was sure they would get good placings. The horse felt so strong that we found ourselves quite up front. And then I felt we could make it and decided to just go for it.”

Hungares: the Shagya-Arabian gelding, was bred by the Bábolna National Stud and was born in Hungary, Bábolna in 1998 as Siglavy Bagdady VIII-1. He was imported to Spain in 2004. Due to the training in Spain and the special training-education method of the Bábolna Stud he achieves great results. (by Bábolna National Stud)
