The R50 000 Cape Yearling Sale graduate Mr Flood makes it five in a row

The power-packed Pathfork gelding Mr Flood has deservedly earned himself poster boy status for Bloodstock South Africa’s 2020 Cape Yearling Sale.

A R50 000 graduate of this true value -for-money regional sale, the Lucky Houdalakis trained speedster took his earnings to over the half million mark at Turffontein last Wednesday – winning the Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap to make it five on the trot, and six wins from just eight starts.

Everybody will be looking for the new generation Mr Flood amongst the diverse 170 lots catalogued for the 2020 renewal of this power platform of winners, which will be held at Mistico Equestrian Centre near Paarl on Friday 28 February.

And the Houdalakis flagbearer is clearly no one hit wonder. History shows that this sale has consistently produced high-class graded stakes winners, including the likes of Doosra, Elusive Heart,

Final Judgement, Hack Green, Princess Peach, and Drakenstein Stud’s exciting young stallion Gold Standard.

Glen Kotzen’s recent winner Coral Bay, a winner of the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery and Irridescence Stakes at two, was a R60 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Yearling Sale.

Five Futura’s To Fire

The five Futura progeny are going to be in demand and the sale kicks off with his Mauritzfontein colt, closely inbred to Fort Wood.

rakenstein Stud’s Futura celebrated his first winner, when his 2yo son Karnallie got off the mark at Turffontein on Gauteng Guineas day last week. The gelding, who had run second on debut, is out of the Parade Leader mare Ariza. He was a R75 000 buy from the 2019 Emperors Palace National 2yo Sale.

One of three sons of outstanding sire Dynasty to be named South African Horse Of The Year, Futura was an exceptional racehorse whose nine wins from 18 outings, included triumphs in the 2015 Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, 2015 Gr1 J&B Met, and the Gr1 Champions Cup – the latter in both 2014 and 2015.

He earned over R4,3 million during his racing career and was named Horse Of The Year and also Champion Older Male and Champion Middle Distance Horse in 2014-2015.

A colt by Futura made R1,2 million at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, while his son Castle On The Hill was knocked down for R1,3 million to top the 2019 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.
