eading the weights is last year’s winner of this event Fort Vogue. Mike Bass’ charge progressed quickly at this stage of last season and on setting off for Natal was strongly fancied to win the prestigious Durban July. Fort Vogue was clearly below best in Natal and has been unable to make the Quartet in three starts since returning from a break in October. In terms of ratings though, he has been steadily coming to hand and he did briefly look threatening in the Gr2 Midmar Premier Trophy last time out. He has a shout if finding his best form.

Veterans Since returning from a two year break in 2008, the gutsy veteran Grafton Street has done tremendously well and as he showed when trying to make all in the Green Point Stakes, he is as well as ever. He does look held on his latest effort, but he has gained four of his career victories over 1800m here at Kenilworth and if allowed a soft lead, he could take some pegging back. As with the 9yo Grafton Street, the 8yo Mighty Atom is still performing at a high level. Indeed, he is currently racing off his highest ever mark in the handicap. As with last season when he finished ninth in this race though, Mighty Atom meets some very promising younger horses with much more scope for improvement.

Gr2 Peninsula Handicap over 1800m at Kenilworth on Wednesday As we all eagerly await the 150th renewal of the Queen’s Plate on Saturday, the highlight in midweek is the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap. There are some very promising youngsters amongst the full field of sixteen going to post. It should be a thriller, writes STEVE FURNISH.

out and he is now 1,5kg better off at the weights with that one. Last Regal seems to be at his best during the winter months as his win in the Gr3 Winter Guineas last season will attest. He has his third run after a rest here and would certainly have a shout if producing his best.

Jockey Karl Neisius did desert him in the Premier Trophy though, and this time around he’s aboard In Writing.

Joey’s Coupling Hawk’s Eye got off to a tremendous start this season, winning three of his first four starts. Those victories were all achieved over a minimum of 2000m though and he has now risen some 19 points in the weights. Hawk’s Eye is also drawn very wide. He has a stiff task. Stable companion Lion In Winter on the other hand has gained his wins over shorter. He’s yet to race this far, but he was running on nicely over 1600m last time out and he was also finishing well when
