MR88 HANDICAP over 1600m at Scottsville on Tuesday Just eight runners will face the starter in the MR88 over a mile at Scottsville, but the field looks highly competitive.Which is, of course, what handicaps are for.

oint top-weighted Chill has not been out of the first three at his last four starts, running to consistent ratings. He likes to race handy, or make his own pace. That should ensure a decent pace and a true run race. They’ll have to get past him! Other joint-topweight Cape Town has shown nothing like

his best form the last few times. He had good form prior to that, but has been on the go for a long time now, in ten starts since mid-December. He may be due for a break and will probably again not produce his best. Fastnetrock returned to his best form when winning a mile at Greyville on soft going last time out. He’d missed the break, but ran on well to win going

away. With a repeat of that effort he should go close. A length or so behind Fastnetrock at Greyville was Ice Machine, who was on a hattrick that occasion. He set the pace, but was hanging in the closing stages and run out of it. Assuming he’s sound and well, he has a good chance to take up the winning trail again. ‘That is provided that he really stays a mile, and isn’t a sprinter, like his dam. Ice Machine is reunited here with Anton Marcus, who was in the irons at both of the gelding’s previous wins (over 1400m, on good ground). Kings Call is stable companion of Fastnetrock, with riding arrangements suggesting that

the latter is the stable elect. Kings Call has been lightly raced in the last year or so. He won over a mile at Greyville by a nose last July, at odds of 35/1. He reappeared only in January, when well below best, and didn’t do much better at his only other start since then. He seems an unlikely winner here. Duntroon is not the most consistent of competitor, racing with and without blinkers, over distances from 1400m to 200m. He might be a bit confused about what’s requires – or perhaps the now seven-yearold just does his own thing, On his best form, which he showed twice in his last four starts, Duntroon certainly comes into

the reckoning. Only the race will tell. Colin Scott saddles Live Controversy who won his last start over 1400m on the inner track here. He’d been knocking at the door in two runs prior to that, over 1300 and 1400m at Greyville. He likes to race handy and a good effort looks again on the cards – provided he stays a true run mile (a distance which he tries for the first time). That leaves Henchman, stable companion to topweight Cape Town. He has been no more than about three lengths off the winner in his last seven starts, but hasn’t been able to win. The handicapper isn’t

showing much leniency, though, and he may again not be able to find the winner’s box. He should not be far off, though. The early pace should be a good one, and a true run race is on the cards. We pick Ice Machine and Marcus to play it cool, and complete a treble, at the expense of likely front runner Chill (“Marcus Catches Chill”) and Fastnetrock. An open race, though, especially if Ice Machine doesn’t quite see it out.
