MR94 DIVIDIED HANDICAP over 1000m at Kenilworth on Wednesday The countdown to the official launch of the Cape’s Sizzling Summer Season will only be a matter of days away as the speed merchants go to post for an MR 94 Divided Handicap over 1000m at Kenilworth on Wednesday. The promising 3yo Royal Academy colt Cape Royal looks set to get back into the winner’s circle as his summer campaign gets under way.

t has been a frustrating six months for trainer Dean Kannemeyer and his Monaco based owner Lady Christine Laidlaw. The handsome bay colt, who had heads turning when making his debut over Wednesday’s course and distance, has had only two run since that afternoon that had the dogs yelping with delight.

Very Fast - Cape Royal returns to the scene of his cracking debut win at Kenilworth on Wednesday

Karl Neisius had merely posed for the cameras when Cape Royal streaked clear to beat subsequent multiple winner in November Rain by 6,25 lengths. But, we are yet to see the champion. Hardly surprisingly, Cape Royal was given the Durban ticket for Champions Season, and he came out five weeks later for the Gr1 Gold Medallion at Scottsville. He never got into that race as he finished a disappointing 7,60 lengths behind Drier’s Potent Power. We are not going to regurgitate the sentiment and varying opinions about the KZN Capital City’s track on the big sprint jackpot race- day as enough has been said and written. But just maybe there were genuine excuses. There were, after all, more than a few good horses that went missing that day. Cape Royal returned to action a month ago in a MR 88 Handicap over 1000m at Durbanville. He would have needed the run, but was still backed into an even money favourite as he ran on late for just under a length back to Casual Var. He is likely to strip a far fitter horse here, and we expect him to show that his debut run was no flash in the pan and that he is headed for brighter things.

sadly unsound 5yo National Emblem gelding Caravaggio, who won a tight finish at this venue last Wednesday. He beat the capable Lake Geneva by a neck in that MR 92 Handicap. It is of some concern that Caravaggio races so soon, as he is definitely the sort that enjoys breaks between his races. He has also recorded all his four wins over 1200m, and they may go just a little too quick for him here. But capable he certainly he is and a horse that his trainer suggests would have trained on and made his way through the divisions, but for a twice fractured pelvis and a hairline fracture of his cannon bone.

Visitors KwaZulu-Natalians Dennis Drier and Sean Cormack are in town and sent out their various runners this past weekend. They team up with the speedy Australian-bred Tipo Tinto. The son of Hussonet failed to win in the Cape last summer when he had 3 starts for 2 place cheques , and has been fairly consistent without adding to his winning tally into his 4yo season. He ran a good race last time in an MR 94 Handicap over 1200m at Scottsville when downed narrowly by the capable Kruger Rand, to whom he was conceding 5kgs. Tipo Tinto ran only 3,30 lengths behind the classy Depardieu in the Thekwini Sprint on July Day, when cramped at the 800m marker. That effort showed that he may be much better than his present status as a one-time winner.

Forever Fit Milnerton-based trainer Joey Ramsden hit cracking form at Kenilworth last Wednesday, and he sends out two capable sorts from two different worlds, who are both likely to need the outing. Cont. p2
