MR 92 HANDICAP at Vaal on Tuesday
N
Trainer Lucky Houdalakis has turned the career of the gallant 6yo Kahal gelding Noble Star on its head. Now a six time winner as he approaches his half century of outings on Tuesday at the Vaal, one wonders whether the charismatic in-form Greek conditioner is not pushing the envelope, as he asks his charge to take on some decent sorts over a sharp looking 1400m.
oble Star won twice over a mile earlier on with Dean Kannemeyer down in the Cape but he has been converted into a decent hardknocking stayer since joining Houdalakis. He has won 3 of his last 5 starts, all over 2400m, with his last win down in KZN one of his best when storming home by a most impressive 9,25
lengths at Greyville. While no champion, it is surprising to see Noble Star line up in the Vaal 1400m straight MR 92 Handicap - although it may well be a sharpener and part of a wider strategy for some bigger fish in the pipeline.
Woodruff Duo
Amongst his 12 opponents, there is some genuine, and certainly more distance suited, class. And top of the pops on this front would
be Geoff Woodruff ’s coupling of The Captain’s Tune and Master ‘N Commander. Piere Strydom rides the topweighted The Captain’s Tune, who disappointed in the feature season, and comes off a 22 week break following a decent running-on second to Rushmore River in a mile MR 100 Handicap. The son of Captain Al has his first run back and, while fitness is a concern, he has won off a break previously and needs to be considered. Gavin Lerena rides the stablemate –also by Captain Al – Master ‘N Commander, who won his second race from eight starts on the Vaal
sand 1800m last time of asking. He looks a fair sort, but a horse who battles to quicken and this may be on the short side for him.

De Kock
Mike De Kock has three in the race, with the lightly raced Crevasse and Foyle (the mount of Anthony Delpech) looking the picks. Crevasse races in the Rattray red-and-white and is a really smashingly bred son of Western Winter who won 2 from 6 prior to his 22 week break from action. Both of his wins came on the Greyville poly, but

he has run on well at all of his starts and he has shown that he has a turn of foot to suggest he could be anything if anywhere near peak fitness. Foyle is seldom far off the action and one assumes that the stable jockey elected to ride this fellow. Cont. p.2
