O
nly good girls win this top sprint contest and except for the odd clanger every few years, the honour roll makes for satisfying reading and some truly great memories. The race carries the branding of the day’s coordinating benefactor charity in Horses For Causes – read more about that on page xx. Power Pair Only nine fillies will line up at the 1200m marker on Saturday, and at the risk of hammering a cliché, the contest really does make up in quality, for what it lacks in pure numbers. Sean Tarry saddles a power pair of accomplished Gr1 speed performer Carry On Alice and the gutsy Bichette. Off her official rating of 115, Carry On Alice looks more than extremely attractive at the weights. The daughter of Captain Al has her second run down in Cape Town this term after winning the Gr2 Southern Cross Stakes in a scramble of a finish at her opener. She bumps five of the ladies that she beat there again on Saturday on much of a muchness at the weight turnaround and even over the extra 200m, she looks very difficult to beat.

at Kenilworth on Saturday
SA champion trainer Sean Tarry will be on a deserved high after his sensational L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate victory last Saturday and he could follow up and literally ‘carry on’ at the same venue this weekend. He saddles a hot pair that includes the outstanding sprinter Carry On Alice, in the prestigious R400 000 Gr2 Sceptre Stakes. While only one of her victories have been over 1200m, it is worth noting that that was a Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint win beating the more than accomplished Alboran Sea over the Scottsville straight.
Upset
The four-time winning Cuvee Brut was the lowflyer that almost popped up to upset the odds in the Southern Cross Stakes, when she took off late under Anton Marcus to be beaten a whisker by Tarry’s Alice on the photo. She was subsequently slow away under topweight of 61kgs in the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes when failing to produce anything like that run and ran 2,35 lengths behind Victoria Lavelle. The course and distance winner looks to be held again by the Tarry flyer. Another smart filly involved at close quarters in the Southern Cross Stakes was Dean Kannemeyer’s Trippi 4yo, Real Princess. A four-time winner from 11 starts, she has placed regularly in her last three starts over shorter and has run on when the race is over. She seems like a decent sort who would probably enjoy 1400m – but word is that Grant Behr is expecting a big showing over the extra on
Saturday, and he will just have to manage the likely buffeting south easterly wind from her 1 stall-gate.
Light Me Up
Trainer Glen Kotzen is another man who literally saw the ‘light’ on Queen’s Plate day, courtesy of a massive Met prep in the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap by Light The Lights. The Paarl-based outfit saddle two here and it is the Captain Al 3yo Princess Royal, who could be the most interesting, after reverting to what looks her preferred stretch after failing to stay in the Choice Carriers Championship. The Listed East Cape Nursery winner, a halfsister to champion Princess Victoria, showed her real ability when runner-up behind the admittedly subsequently disappointing Entisaar in the Gr1 Alan Robertson Championship last season, and cannot be taken with a pinch of salt in this company. She ran handily when under a length back in fourth in the Southern Cross Stakes and may enjoy being given a chance here by Anthony Andrews. Her stablemate Night In Tahiti, a decent looking daughter of Kildonan, won on her debut but has not
60.0 (11) 8/1
been far off since. She ran on and looked dangerous in the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes when under two lengths fourth behind Victoria Lavelle. She has plenty to do on these terms, but Grant Van Niekerk sticks with her and she must fancy place money again.
Ferrari’s
Two daughters of Querari make up the balance of the 3yo challenge. Duncan Howells’ Gr2 The Debutante winner was unbeaten from three starts when going into the Southern Cross Stakes after a 14 week break from race action. She was not disgraced when running 1,65 lengths off Carry On Alice in fifth and can only improve with greater fitness levels. Eric Sands has been the ghost conditioner of some of the big visiting feature winners recently and he gets a chance to step into the limelight with the lightly raced Champers – another daughter of Querari. She won 2 from 3 starts as a 2yo and then ran on doggedly after a seven month rest to chase Victoria Lavelle home in the Laisserfaire Stakes. If improving further, she could challenge for place money and is a speedster who can be followed in her next few starts in lesser company.
Tarry Two
The second of the Tarry attack is the Gr2 Camellia Stakes winner Bichette, who didn’t show much at her opening Cape run when 6,60 lengths behind Lanner Falcon in the Diadem Stakes. Andrew Fortune takes
Can you hear it? The thunder of hooves is approaching in Africa’s Richest Horse Race, the CTS Million Dollar - runs January 2016
the ride on the daughter of Western Winter, who should finish behind her more highly vaunted stablemate – but still cannot be discounted. Mike Bass trained Fly By Night has beaten the boys at Gr1 weight for age terms over the sprints and showed a welcome spark again when chasing her stablemate Lanner Falcon home in the Diadem Stakes. She has tended towards inconsistency at times but would give Carry On Alice a serious go for her money if coming racing in the right frame of mind.

Guns
Carry On Alice may carry too many guns and she is the selection to hold Real Princess and Princess Royal. Fly By Night and the KZN 3yo Cosmic Light could fight for the scraps. There won’t be much in it when it counts.
Sceptre – A Great Mare
Saturday’s R400 000 Gr2 Sceptre Stakes is named in honour of one of the greatest mares to grace a racetrack and has been won by a host of top class performers over the years - the likes of Sunera, Laisserfaire, Blueridge Mountain and Covenant come to mind. Sceptre was a daughter of Epsom Derby winner and four times champion sire Persimmon (by St Simon), out of the unplaced mare Ornament (by another Epsom Derby winner Bend Or). Ornament, while no star on the track, was a highly successful broodmare with her progeny also including Champion Stakes winner, Labrador, and successful US sire, Star Ruby. Ornament was an exceptionally well bred mare, being a full sister to unbeaten Triple Crown winner, Ormonde, and her dam, Lily Agnes (by English Derby winner Macaroni) was a tough race mare, whose 19 wins included the Doncaster Cup. Ornament is also the ancestress, albeit a few generations back, of former champion South African sire, Jungle Cove (Bold Ruler). Not only did Sceptre compete in all five British classics of 1902 (winning four of them – 2000 Guineas, 1000 Guineas, Oaks, St Leger), but she competed in the Lincolnshire Handicap as a 3yo, where Sceptre lost by a short head. Sceptre lived until the ripe old age of 27 and would have been a racing legend even if she had been a complete failure at stud. Barring Formosa, Sceptre is the only horse in history to have won as many as four British classics, a truly remarkable feat –and her feat was made all the noteworthy by the fact that during her 3yo campaign she was trained by her eccentric, gambling owner, Robert Sievier. In South Africa, the Sceptre influence continues through the success of the Biribi sire, Jubie, sire of Summer Handicap hero Cape Heath, Met winner Minnetonka and outstanding broodmares, Rondeau (2nd dam of Broodmare Of The Year First Lisa) and Turbinia (dam of Sun Lass).

The quality galloper French Navy looks unstoppable here

Gr3 LONDON NEWS STAKES at Turffontein on Saturday After the vagaries of the intrepid Gauteng weather interrupted matters last Saturday, the R100 000 Ready To Run sale graduate French Navy gets a second chance to add the rescheduled R250 000 Gr3 London News Stakes to his impressive CV.

out, after his excellent third in the Sansui Summer Cup at his penultimate start. While Bezanova is a half kilo better off, he is unlikely to trouble Tarry’s star 4yo. Tyrone Zackey’s Judicial is sneaking back to his best form and came from the clouds to run fourth in the Sansui Summer Cup. He ran on well again when a half length behind Bezanova at his last start. Killua Castle spoilt the Tarry party last time when beating LQP runner Legal Eagle in his prep run. The Woodruff trained Australian bred galloper is a touch in and out and looks unlikely to repeat that giant
fter the success of stable star Legal Eagle in Saturday’s L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, trainer Sean Tarry indicated that French Navy is unlikely to go for the big one in Cape Town – and now more so that this race is a week later. French Navy looks likely to knock this lot over without too much sweat. The Gr1 SA Classic and Daily News 2000 winner looks to hold his 7 opponents and bumps many of the usual suspects, including Charity Mile winner Bezanova, whom he beat rather easily last time
killing act. Woodruff also saddles the improving 4yo Master ‘N Commander, who beat The Hangman last time in a race that he showed his better ability. Weiho Marwing’s Mac De Lago ran fifth and only 1,60 lengths behind Master Sabina in the Sansui Summer Cup. He also finished well to run fourth to Bouclette Top in the Charity Mile. The favourite’s stablemate Whiteline Fever has been a faithful servant but looks past his best and shouldn’t trouble the top two. French Navy is a confident selection to beat Master ‘N Commander and Bezanova.
Newsmaker Of Note SATURDAY’S delayed feature is named in honour of London News, one of the most famous South African horses of the last 50 years, died after contracting cancer at the age of 17 in 2009. The son of Bush Telegraph won 11 races including five Grade 1s, notably the 1996 Durban July and the following year’s Queen’s Plate and J & B Met,but it was his win in the 1997 Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong that marked him apart. He smashed the 1800m track record at Sha Tin and in the process became one of the comparatively few South African-bred horses to win at the top level on the international stage. London News was then transferred from Alec Laird to Barry Hills. He ran at Royal Ascot and finished third to Bosra Sham in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes but disappointed behind Alhaarth when sent to The Curragh for the International Stakes.
He rejoined Laird on his return to South Africa where he won the Drill Hall Stakes before being retired to stud. He was twice horse of the year. Laird said: “London News was a very professional horse to train. He was wellmannered and did the job. On occasion he wouldn’t do his best on the gallops - he would save himself for the racecourse. “He was a good traveller. He fulfilled my initial dream by winning the Durban July and then went beyond that by winning in Hong Kong. “ London News stood at the Cheveley Stud of the late Wilfred Koster who bred him and was champion first-season sire. Since 1996 he had been at Terry Silcock’s Starston Stud. “It’s a sad story because his breeder, his owners [Laurie and Jean Jaffee] and London News himself all died of cancer.” Michael Clower – www.racingpost.co.uk

Triptique’s outstanding Gr2 Merchants win in November is visiting KZN trainer Dennis Drier’s only feature success of the Cape Summer Of Champions so far. The top yard sends out Jet Master mare Gathering Fame in a bid to win the R150 000 Listed Jamaica Handicap for the second year running.
he 5yo Gathering Fame is winless in the year since she picked up the honours in the 2015 Jamaica Handicap beating Omaticaya, but has a decent draw a good as chance as any this time round in the typically competitive handicap. And Mr Drier surely has a feature or two left in the tank this Cape stint?
No Spark Gathering Fame ran two close up G2 fifths in the KZN Champions Season but is yet to fire in her two starts down in Cape Town. She was 7 lengths off Ma Choix in the Victress but can improve with her good draw and form jockey. Her stablemate Pecan Nut ran a poor race when making a respiratory noise and dropping right out in the Victress to run close on 15 lengths down the tube. The former Stan Elley trained galloper is much better than that. Justin Snaith’s Dynasty filly Harvard Crimson can only improve on her 7 length finish in the Victress. The daughter of Dynasty has a powerful turn of foot off a fast pace (which she should get here) and had the close to run into the Diana Stakes places over a distance probably short for her at best.
Bass Duo The handily weighted Mike Bass pair of Sublime Lady and the consistent Good Grace must have a shout. Sublime Lady was a reserve runner in last Saturday’s Paddock Stakes and this lightly raced daughter of Captain Al must be highly regarded to be pitched by this powerful yard at the G1 features. She had not run for close on two months when a no show 10 lengths back to Ma Choix in the Victress Stakes. She would have been prepped towards the Paddock Stakes and will strip fitter here. The stable jockey Grant Van Niekerk rides the year older Good Grace who is a two time winner and much more experienced than her stablemate. She was hanging last time when finishing powerfully to be beaten narrowly by Speedy Chestnut and looks capable of winning a handicap of this nature.
Jump For Joy Glen Kotzen’s Tippi filly Jeweller’s Joy finally repaid her trainer’s belief in her ability last time when coming on powerfully to win an MR 86 Handicap over a mile beating the decent Moonlight ‘N Roses. Dean Kannemeyer’s Indaba was 4,55 lengths behind there and now enjoys a 3kg weight pull which could well work in her favour and bring her into

the picture. The handicapper was merciless early on with the daughter of Dynasty and she is bound to start showing more as she reaches a more competitive rating again. Brett Crawford fields a powerful four way coupling and stable jockey Corne Orffer rides the consistent Horse Chestnut mare, Speedy Chestnut. A winner of her last two in lower rated handicaps, she meets Good Grace on 2kgs better terms for a 0,40 length beating last time. Stablemate Elusive Wave has drawn wide and is racing off form and the same applies to Sea Glass – who gets a 1 draw to help her cause. Visiting jockey Muzi Yeni takes the reins on the nicely drawn Morning Light, a three time winning daughter of Dynasty who will be happier over the 2000m after a no show in the mile last time. The former Glen Kotzen runner Masked Lady showed smart ability early on but has produced in and out form this term. She is now trained by Neil Bruss and should not be far off Morning Light at best.
Wide Harvard Crimson and Gathering Fame may be best with Indaba and Good Grace not far behind. The Crawford yard has a powerful hand with Morning Light and Speedy Chestnut heading the challenge. It is a fillies and mares handicap, and in the absence of a standout form runner, go as wide as possible in the exotics.

A terrific tactical plan come together gave SA champion trainer Sean Tarry his first R1 million Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate victory when the Avontuur-bred Legal Eagle turned the prestigious mile into a royal procession. he Greys Inn gelding’s superb victory made a mockey of the general expert analysis of his ability over the distance – and of jockey Anton Marcus’s brave decision to ride him.
Marcus could hardly contain his ecstacy when interviewed at the pull-up by the lovely Fiona Ramsden, and he enjoyed the literal last laugh on those who had suggested he had to be ‘smoking something illegal’, to quote one wag, after getting off the champion proven miler Act Of War, to ride the SA Derby winner over a trip thought to be sharp for him. “I am elated but I am so sorry at the same time that owner Markus (Jooste) could not be here. I really did have faith in Legal Eagle, even with a few questions raised after his last run – which was on the inside track. He showed today what he is capable of and we always felt that if he could reproduce his 120 rating, as he does on the outside course at Turffontein, he would be a big runner. “I feel that we can put a line through his July run as there were excuses first time at Greyville. Today I followed Bouclette Top and didn’t really want to lead – even though I am
sure we could have, had the need arisen,’’ he said with a broad smile. The brilliant jockey rode the 2013 Queen’s Plate winner Variety Club in the same silks, trained by Joey Ramsden. South Africa’s highest rated horse at 120, Legal Eagle was having his final Met prep and was easy to back at 7-1, with last year’s winner Futura jumping at 15-10 after his recent fastfinishing Green Point Stakes second. The fourteen strong field was sent on their way with Legal Eagle hopping out keenly from his 8 draw, before being passed by Charity Mile winner Bouclette Top after 200m. Andrew Fortune had Act Of War placed in third, ahead of Legislate and Noah From Goa, with Futura relaxed two lengths behind. Bouclette Top lead them for home, but at the 500m Legal Eagle was raring to go and tracked by Act Of War, Marcus made his move, as Futura ghosted through down the rail, looking full of running. With 400m to go Legal Eagle continued to gallop powerfully and with Legislate staying on without threatening, Marcus kept the leader beautifully balanced and showing him a right-handed crop to score by 1,50
lengths in a time of 99,23 secs. Justin Snaith, who saddled five winners on the day, as well as one away from home base at Turffontein, was magnanimous in defeat, suggesting it was no shame to be beaten by a horse of Legal Eagle’s ability. Mike de Kock’s Cape Guineas winner Noah From Goa ran a gutsy race as the only 3yo, to finish 0,40 lengths behind Legislate, and holding out a determined late charge by Captain America, who scrambled into fourth. Horse Of The Year Futura’s flame flickered briefly in the straight but he had little to come when it really counted and found this a bit tougher than the class of 2015. He ran fifth and 3,90 lengths behind and will no doubt have his supporters for the Met, over 400m further. Marcus’ original ride Act Of War ran a tame race, finishing sixth and 4,30 lengths off, with Sansui Summer Cup winner Master Sabina in a noshow seventh, 5,05 lengths behind. Trainer Sean Tarry said afterwards that he was never

confident of beating the likes of Future over a mile – but that he had not doubted his charge’s chances in terms of his prep and pure ability. ”Anton rode a great race and I was pleased to see we got the cover. The game plan changed a few times. But, hey, it worked out well. The 5 month break from racing has done him well. I must thank all my staff who headed up my team here. Thanks to Eric Sands for assisting us. And I’m thrilled to have gotten the open boxes – the Cape guys are missing something by not filling them,” he laughed. Jooste Racing Manager Derek Brugman said that the Marcus jockey switch took ’48 hours of debating’. He congratulated Sean Tarry on a great training feat and thanked Milnerton trainer Eric Sands for his great work and help. Legal Eagle is by Vodacom Durban July winner Greys Inn, who enjoyed a fine ‘double’ on the afternoon. Greys Inn is a half brother to Good Judgement (Horse Chestnut), the dam of Smart Call, who won the Gr1
The champagne corks were popping out at Avontuur, the local champion wine and winner producing outfit who bred Legal Eagle. A quick scan of the statistics suggest they boast a 100% strike rate in this great race! Legal Eagle is out of the six-time winning National Emblem mare Young Sensation, who was also trained by Sean Tarry. The winner was bought by our champion trainer on behalf of top owner Markus Jooste for R425 000 at the 2013 National Yearling Sale. The gelded Legal Eagle has now won 5 races with 2 places from 9 starts with stakes earned of R2 297 875. And now for the Met, and a few outstanding matters of return matches and revenge. After the outward political correctness and sportsmanship that reigned on one of our truly great racedays, there will be powerful teams regrouping for a renewed assault on the silverware on 30 January at the same venue.

Weichong Marwing takes the Paddock Stakes salute on Smart Call
Maine Chance Farms Gr1 PADDOCK STAKES at Kenilworth last Saturday
L
The Alec Laird trained Smart Call will take her place in the Gr1 J&B Met after making a sensational local debut to score a superb win in the R1 million Maine Chance Farms Gr1 Paddock Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday.
aird had told the Sporting Post in an interview during October last year that the Paddock Stakes was Smart Call’s mission and things went perfectly according to plan for the outstanding daughter of Ideal World, after she had pulled a decent 5 draw and was ridden to perfection by Weichong Marwing. Smart Call broke the Gr1 ice for her sire and for Jessica Slack’s new-look Mauritzfontein when she won the Woolavington 2000 in the 2015 KZN Champions Season, and she added to her impressive cv with an eyecatching
victory in one of South Africa’s greatest fillies and mares weight-for-age races. Her vastly internationally experienced jockey, who is also sponsored by Smart Call’s breeders, always had the 4yo in a striking position off a medium pace set by Harlem Shake, who led Come Fly With Me and Pine Princess. Into the home run, last year’s Paddock Stakes winner Inara was stalking Smart Call and drew alongside the Mauritzfontein runner at the 300m – and it was race on. But Smart Call was moving effortlessly and despite the powerful challenge from Inara,
the daughter of Ideal World lengthened her stride when asked by her rider and she drew off to win by 2 lengths in a time of 111,77 secs. The gallant Inara had her heart broken in the last 100m, but hung on to second, ahead of the improved again BelaBela, who showed her Cape Fillies Guineas run to be all wrong. Favourite Same Jurisdiction was slow away and caught wide from her poor draw. While she had a clear run up the middle, the KZN star failed to produce her customary finish and plodded into fourth, with little left in the tank. She returned with an
overreach wound on the left fore. Winning trainer Alec Laird said that Smart Call’s good draw was ‘a bonus’. “Weichong Marwing knows her well and she was always in a good position. We will now go for the Met as I don’t think going back to the mile of the Majorca is the ideal route to follow,” he said. Mauritzfontein boss Jessica Slack was full of praise for the efforts of her trainer and said that the moment felt surreal and like a fairytale. “I am going to watch the replay now, just to make double sure,” she laughed. The very talented Smart Call has won 6 races (two
Gr1’s) with 6 places from her 15 starts and took her stakes tally to R1 991 125. A daughter of Ideal World, Smart Call is out of Horse Chestnut’s unraced daughter, Good Judgement – a half sister to Vodacom Durban July winner, Greys Inn, who sired L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Legal Eagle a half hour later. A stakes winning son of Kingmambo and champion racemare Banks Hill, Ideal World is closely related to successful sires Dansili, Cacique and Champs Elysees, and this is also the family of Gr1 Qipco 2000 Guineas Gr1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas winner, Gleneagles.
Gr2 PENINSULA HANDICAP at Kenilworth last Saturday
Y
Paarl based trainer Glen Kotzen pulled a J&B Met prospect out of the hat for staunch owner Hugo Hattingh when the Western Winter gelding Light The Lights came home too strongly for Summer Cup runner-up Deo Juvente to win the R400 000 Gr2 Peninsula Handicap at Kenilworth on Saturday.
ou can’t keep a good man and the professional Woodhill Racing Team down and Kotzen was full value for a fine exhibition of programming for Light The Lights, who now looks likely to build on his early promise. With the distraction of some big names in the line-up, the Kotzen 4yo was largely ignored by punters and many may have missed his powerful flourish from way back to run on and grab fifth place and only 2,90 lengths behind Heartland in the Listed Jet Master Stakes just three weeks earlier. Jockey Stuart Randolph, who rode Light The Lights to win his maiden at his third outing, executed a perfect tactical ride
and, in typical good pilot style, showed fine judgement in the windy conditions. “Now that he been gelded he is a much better horse. We were caught a bit wide but that worked in our favour and protected us from the wind. He turned it on well and we enjoyed a good clear run up the straight,” he said. The handily weighted Milton, albeit in under sufferance, tried to make every post a winning one as he strode out well ahead of his field to lead the beautiful grey French Revolution, with Helderberg Blue and Silicone Valley further back, just ahead of The Conglomerate. Bylveleld came into the headwind and looked to have judged the pace well as Milton continued to dig down deep inside the 300m marker.
But the son of Lateral was treading water as Stuart Randolph produced Light The Lights with a beautifully sustained run up the outside, with Joburg raider Deo Juvente taking off a stride later. With nothing getting to him, Light The Lights cruised past Milton and went on to win going away by 0,40 lengths in a time of 111.54 secs. The Billy Prestage-trained Milton held on well for second, 0,75 lengths in front of Deo Juvente, who ran a cracker from a wide draw at his first start at Kenilworth. The weak 4-1 favourite The Conglomerate faded right out. Trainer Glen Kotzen, who won the opener on the card with the maiden Princess Jane, confirmed that they had tried to race Light The Lights as a colt. “We really wanted to try and
WAYNE MARKS
not geld him, but after that KZN feature where he was uncontrollable, we decided that was it. He is a different horse and can now show his true ability. He was really well coming in to this race. It was a massive team effort and I must thank my owners Hugo and Suzanne Hattingh of Tripple H Trust. They have been so patient and I don’t know what
we would have done without their loyal support,” he said. The Hallmark Thoroughbreds bred Light The Lights is a son of Western Winter out of the sixtime winning Northern Guest mare, First Arrival. This is the same family as exported Gr1 winner In The Fast Lane (Jet Master). The handsome specimen was purchased for R450 000
at the National Yearling Sale. He is now a winner of 3 races (including a PE stakes feature) with 6 places from 18 starts and R543 550 in stakes. And now that he has learn to settle in his races, Light The Lights, who has only won up to a mile so far, should readily get the 2000m of the Met – and the big race picture gets some further exciting depth!

Gr3 POLITICIAN STAKES at Kenilworth last Saturday
Arthur Stakes Derby Claim
T
Declarations are due by 11h00 on Thursday 14 January
It is no wonder that Justin Snaith is keen to engage jockey Piere Strydom for the major Summer Of Champions racedays. The multiple champion rider’s display of cucumber cool confidence and judgement rounded off one of the most impressive performances of the afternoon when Black Arthur stormed home to win the R250 000 Gr3 Politician Stakes.
he traditional Derby Trial hosted a strong field, including Gr1 Premier Champions Stakes winner Rabada, who was having his first outing in the Cape after a ten week break and some travel issues. But boom reputations and high faluting credentials aside, none of the visiting contingent had any answers for the Silvano colt Black Arthur, who has had Cape Derby written all over him since winning his maiden at odds-on at end of October. Black Arthur is just a perfect Striker kind of horse and between his reputation and his post maiden win, the money came for him as he was backed into 3-1. Rabada had to be hooded and delayed the start – he will have to be reschooled before his next engagement. The race was a dramatic one as Black Arthur was dropped out to the end of the field as Kemal Kavur led Solar Night and Mooghamir. Around the far bend, Kemal Kavur stetched his lead to six lengths with Mooghmair and Nebula trying to keep in touch. At the 400m, the field had drifted to the outside as Kemal Kavurr continued to lead, with Liege and Marinaresco chasing hard down the outside. At this point Strydom pessed the launch button and produced Black Arthur from lengths back around his field to storm home down the inside of the track and catch the outside track action napping. Black Arthur ran on strongly to win by 0,75 lengths in a time of 111,20 secs. This beat the time of 111,54 secs run by Light The Lights
in similar style, carrying 2kgs less a half hour earlier. The Mike Bass-trained Marinaresco stayed on well for second, with the Sean Tarry runner Liege improving smartly over the trip and possibly marking himself as an outside Derby hope. Jockey Piere Strydom was impressed by his charge. “Justin told me some months ago to keep an eye on Black Arthur, but when I saw his was out at the weights and had a bad draw, I thought we may be expecting too much. But in the race I felt I was always gpnna get there. He was changing legs in the back straight so has a lot of improvement to come. I’d like the ride again,” he said. Trainer Justin Snaith said that Black Arthur was an ‘amazing horse and a dream to train’. “He just looks so good and normally those ones aren’t necessarily always so good. But he is different. I’d like to congratulate Gillian and Alec Foster and say well done to John Freeman and Varsfontein Stud.” Black Arthur was bred by his co-owner Alec Foster and is a son of Silvano out of the threetime winning Western Winter mare, Grace Me Guide, who raced in the same silks for Dean Kannemeyer. He has now won 3 of his 4 starts for stakes of R243 125. Snaith and Strydom were back in the winner’s enclosure for the Fosters three race later, when the Dynasty filly Qing registered a personal hat-trick from just five outings, when winning an MR 80 Handicap. She looks very promising.

Time For Change Stewards of the WP Racing Club came a step closer to immortality when the Kenilworth timing equipment fell short of the expected in a big race for the second time in four weeks.
F
irst the Fillies Guineas, where the timer started only when the horses had covered a good few lengths, now the Argus Guineas, where the timer refused to jump at all, but at the end of the day, it was all about Ashtontown. The big chestnut was, to many, the Cape’s outstanding juvenile of last season, when his four wins from as many starts included the Cape Nursery and the Saldanha Stakes. The son of Bush Telegraph remains unbeaten in Cape Town, for the Guineas marked his first start in that part of the world since he and trainer David Ferraris packed their bags and headed north. The betting showed London News as the shortest priced Guineas favourite in decades, the big colt eventually going postward at the ludicrous odds of 6/10. Ashtontown was able to employ his proven speed in what essentially became a sprint up the straight, catching London News and the rest of them flatfooted. It was Ganser Macher who made the early pace, ambling along ahead of Planetary Music and Swift Target, with London
News about three or four lengths back after being forced to ease soon after the start. Ashtontown bided his time in midfield, and was still unsighted as Planetary Music set sail for home at the 400m. London News quickly went out in pursuit, but was clearly struggling to move up through his gearbox so quickly. League Title began to throw down a sustained challenge, but nothing could live with Ashtontown once Ferraris’ colt was in full cry. Under the urgings of Weichong Mawing, he simply sprinted past his rivals to overhaul Planetary Music in the final stages, the latter having looked capable of winning less than a furlong out. London News ran on in second ahead of League Title and Planetary Music, with nothing else posing any sort of a threat once the chips were down. Thus first and second place fell to sons of Bush Telegraph, whose death at the age of nine in 1993 is proving to be a telling blow. Whether Ashtontown stays more than 1600m, or even if he really gets a hard run mile, is open to dispute. The Dingaans presented him with a much more searching test, and he appeared to be found wanting. Clearly, the Guineas was run to suit a high class sprint/miler, which Ashtontown
undeniably is. Bred by his owner, Jack Winshaw, Ashtontown has won six of nine career starts for earnings of R408, 895. London News, all things considered, ran well to finish where he did. He gives the impression that he will stay considerably further than 1600m, and will be the horse to beat if he remains in Cape Town for the 2000m Derby on February 3rd. For our money London News is still the best three-year-old male in training, but not one as dominant as the Dingaans made him look. The Guineas simply wasn’t run to suit him, and he was far from disgraced in finishing second.
Beanfeast The Maktoum family, Rulers of Dubai, have reinforced their commitment to the South African racing and breeding industry with the importation of yet another highclass racehorse for stud duties in South Africa. The grey stallion Fard, winner of the Gr1 Middle Park Stakes over 6 furlongs and Timeform rated 118 at 2, will join the Summerhill stallion roster for the 1996 season.
New Venue For Cape Sale After the closure of Goodwood Showground, a new venue for the Cape Summer Yearling Sales has been found: Boland Bank Park in Paarl. Simply follow the N1 from Cape Town to Paarl, take the Drakenstein off-ramp (last before tollgate) and turn left. Take first stop street left, into Langenhoven Street. After about 800m you’ll find the entrance to Boland Bank Park, where 200 yearlings will face the auctioneer on Saturday, 4 February.
New Select Yearling Sale in April The announcement of Odessa Stud Lionel Cohen’s brand new Premier’s Yearling Sale, to be held in Gauteng on the weekend of the R1,25 million Gr1 Premier’s Cup handicap at Turffontein, has had people talking. When the news got out, late last year, that none of the Odessa yearlings had been entered for the TBA National Sale and that Cohen intended to go it alone, Cohen was approached by several others interested in joining him. “It was tough dealing with that,” he says, “as the idea behind the new sale was to catalogue only top yearlings. I had no intention of taking on the TBA by offering an alternative to the National Sale for breeders who wanted a few here and a few there to test the water.
Sands Of Time is our flashback to racing news and events of twenty years ago. It is published monthly in diary format on www.sportingpost.co.za
To me it is all or nothing.” The new Premier’s Yearling Sale is a joint effort between three of South Africa’s leading breeders, Lionel Cohen (of Odessa Stud), Philip Kahan (The Alchemy) and John Koster (part of Koster Bros) (Wilfred Koster will continue to sell at the TBA’s National Sale). “I know I’m taking a risk,” admits Cohen. “But the horses I’ve got are really topclass. By having a sale in April they will be a stage further in their development, giving a better impression of what the final product will look like. The other advantage of the later date is that we won’t clash with the TBA’s National Sale. All three consignors have strong feelings about the likely prices their yearlings will fetch. “The horses are there to sell,” says Lionel. “The market will determine the prices. We are essentially running a cash sale, and there will be horses for everybody. We have made a total commitment to this new sale. We intend to give our customers the best service and benefits. We’ll really look after them.” The Premier’s Sale will be held at NASREC (Rand Showgrounds). The sale will be conducted by Robin Bruss, with a professional team of auctioneers including Clive Gardner and one or more from Zimbabwe.

I think I can say with confidence that the 2016 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate was one of the best editions of the race in recent memory. As I’ve been ticked off for not giving sponsors enough love, let me say straight off the bat that L’Ormarins are wonderful sponsors. Not only do they have an understanding and appreciation of the event that they have attached their name to, but they handle it in a respectful and gracious manner. Better still, they attract other sponsors who do the same. Rather than taking over the race, as could so easily be the case, they have taken care to grow the day as a whole and it has –rightly – become one of the ‘must do’ events on the Cape Town social calendar.
2016 marked the 10th anniversary of the L’Ormarins’ involvement with the Queen’s Plate. I’ve been lucky enough to be around for most of it and while there are always teething problems and growing pains with any new venture, the LQP team always had a big picture in mind and have stuck resolutely to their guns, getting bigger, better and more polished each and every time. I hate marketing jargon, but there is simply no other way of saying it than they have improved year on year and have succeeded in turning the Queen’s Plate into more than a race day – it has graduated into a bona fide racing experience. So much so, that it is has become celebrated worldwide and is acknowledged as one of the best race days in the world.
Dress Code The day has become synonymous with the Drakenstein blue and white and the dress code lends itself exceptionally well to Cape Town’s laid-back boho-chic. It’s easy for the guys and gives the girls plenty of scope to have fun. For those agonising about not having the perfect outfit, you can dress smart, dress up, dress down or anything inbetween and still feel entirely at home and part of it all. It’s quite a feat and something the Queen’s Plate pulls off beautifully, which is part of its easy charm.
always live up to the hype, the excitement and sense of fun carried through to the day itself. Best of all, the racing came through too, with one of the most exhilarating cards for many a year. It may sound a bit cheesy, but I’d really like to thank everyone who nominated and ran their horses on Saturday. There was a formidable line-up of horseflesh on offer and it would have taken guts and resolution to take them on, but it provided a feast for everyone who attended. Thanks to all the visiting trainers and jockeys, who travelled so far to take their place in the starting line-up. Thanks also to all the staff who made it happen and everyone who attended for entering into the spirit so thoroughly and providing such a perfect counterfoil to a glorious day’s racing.
Superb Organisation I’m told that tickets were sold out and confess that I was dreading a bun fight, but I needn’t have worried. The parking worked (yay!) and there was none of the bloodpressure-challenging Met day melee.
Somehow there was more of a buzz than usual around this year’s event.
On course, the hospitality tents were sensibly positioned and everything was so spaciously laid out that there was room for everyone. The folks manning the gates across the chute deserve a medal as it seemed to work exceptionally well this year and the public flowed around the course with ease. Even the predicted South Easter seemed to bite its tongue and didn’t lash us quite as badly as it could have.
It was in the papers, on the radio and wherever you went, the energy and anticipation were palpable and people were unavailable on Saturday because they were ‘going to the Queen’s Plate, darling’. It was wonderful and unlike a lot of things that don’t
As always, there were a few challenges and this year kicked off with fireworks – literally – as a small fire caused Wetton Road to be closed while fire crews got it under control. A rickety blue gum branch above the picnic area also threatened to put

a spanner in the works, but without missing a beat, the team efficiently cordoned off the area and redirected foot traffic and with the layout so skilfully done, I dare say most people didn’t even notice.
Good Vibes Everyone seemed in a good mood and there were smiles and waves and good natured banter all across the course. Although long term sponsors are rare birds nowadays, one starts to get a feel for the ones that we do have as each puts a very distinctive stamp on their day. The LQP folks have formed a definite MO over the years and arriving on course for the Queen’s Plate has become like visiting an old friend - there are always enough familiar touches to make you feel at home, but as special friends always make an effort, you know there will be quirky new additions to look forward to, to make each day memorable. The carousel was a particularly lovely (and popular!) touch this year as was the swing seat under the blossoms. Even the Kenilworth building got a make-over with thousands of bunches of flowers, photographic displays and tables, chairs and cushions scattered invitingly across the course and tempting one to linger and just soak it all in. Cape Town’s cosmo’s love a chance to strut their stuff and while there were plenty of folks taking the couture (or lack of it) seriously, overall the attire was elegant and guests easily entered into the spirit of the day and behaved accordingly. It made for a grown up day without the starched collars and itchy cuffs and Garrick Burg probably put it best on the ABC, saying it was “Eurocentric racing with South African weather”. The best of both worlds! Paparazzi were pleasantly and relatively unobtrusively out in force in the stud club

and hospitality areas and while I’m a bit rubbish at celeb spotting, there were plenty of them (so I’m told!). My version of celebs are usually found in the parade ring and from that perspective the day was a thorough spoil.
Favourites All the usual favourites were there, but big race days always bring a few extra faces to the track. With the Queens’ Plate being a stallion-maker and the Paddock being such an important race for, well the paddock, there is always interest from the breeding ranks and one can guarantee a few extra friends and familiar faces under the Kenilworth oaks. It was a treat to bump into Southford Stud’s David Southey, accompanied by his lovely son-in law, and get news of the goings on in the Karoo. David tells me that Lateral has put the most beautiful heads on his Karoo crop, which will be something to look forward to at forthcoming sales. There were visiting trainers and grooms aplenty in the loading and saddling areas providing something of a holiday atmosphere and Howling Wind, looking dashing with his smart showing attire attracted his usual share of admirers as he prepped for his big moment, to lead the field out on parade. Jessica Slack beamed from ear to ear after the very smart win by Smart Call in the Paddock Stakes and with a ‘win and you’re in’ invite to the Breeders’ Cup, there will be plenty for SA race fans to look forward to, come November. It was also lovely to have Alec Laird lead in a winner in Cape Town, which leads me on to another unsung h e r o

of the day in Eric Sands. Alec was kind enough to make mention of Eric in his acceptance speech, but it’s worth a mention that no less than Alec Laird, Duncan Howells and Sean Tarry all chose to base themselves with Eric during their Cape stay and I’d say the results speak for themselves. I caught up with Eric saddling his runner for the Terra Del Capo handicap and he smiled broadly when I congratulated him on the day’s results, quipping ‘It doesn’t matter who wins the race, as long as they’re from my yard!’ Legal Eagle’s win was a surprise for some, but less so for others and while there will be the usual grumbles and recriminations about pace, etc. the ink has dried and the result is in the frame and huge congratulations to all the connections (and particularly to Monique Mansour who managed the Tarry horses so professionally). It was particularly fitting that our premier race should go to our current champion trainer and champion owners. I thought it particularly sporting of Justin Snaith to use the opportunity of a postrace interview to weigh in on the debate regarding Legal Eagle’s rating. Justin was thoughtful enough to opine that despite the detractors, Legal Eagle had taken on the best the country could assemble and beaten them fairly and squarely at Weight For Age and deserved every bit of his rating – if not more. From one champion trainer to another, I thought it was a tremendous gesture. It’s also worth a mention that the Snaith yard pull out all the stops to support Queen’s

Plate day – both in the press and on course - and were on the winner’s podium 5 times, so congratulations to them on a very good day at the office. With the sweat drying on the day’s feature runners and the connections gearing up to celebrate, for the rest of us there was still business to conduct and three more races to finish off the day. Big race days attract big crowds and one never knows who you might find out on the course. I found an old school friend with a clutch of English visitors and we cheerfully exchanged terrible tips and I fear I may have cost them some money on the tote, but they took it in good humour. Big days are also an opportunity to make new friends and Mr and Mrs Foster and I bonded over an errant bit of plastic in the parade ring and got chatting about their horses, their breeding programme and of course their fantastic double on the day with Black Arthur (who notched his 3rd win on the trot in the Politician Stakes) and Qing, who also made it three in a row in the Terra del Capo MR 89 handicap. Even more satisfying that both are homebreds and huge congratulations to you both – may there be many more.
Lester Piggott While there was plenty of food for thought, for the racing soul and even for the stomach, my day’s highlight was undoubtedly the opportunity to meet and shake the hand of the one and only Lester Piggott. I’m not usually one to brag, but OMG. Lester Piggott! Nevermind what else happened during the afternoon, that was my day made and a definite tick on the old bucket list. I may not wash my hand for the next few weeks. Thank you again to everyone who worked so hard to make such a fantastic day. Here’s to doing it all over again in 2017.

Pat Shaw continued his dominance of not only the stayers ranks here in Singapore, but of the feature races too, writes Gareth Pepper.
erfect P, an Argentinian bred took out the Group 3 New Year Cup on 1 January and bolstered the Shaw attack towards bigger and better races later in the year. The Derby is a likely propspect for him and he broke the course record by just under two seconds. I am glad Nuresh Juglall managed to take out a deserved feature after finishing second in last year’s renewal. At the time of writing, Nuresh Is at the hospital after taking a nasty fall in trial 4 on Tuesday and although walking away from the incident, is being checked out by doctors. Let’s hope all is ok with him. This past Sunday saw another Shaw representative put in a top class performance. His name is Time Odyssey and he absolutely demolished a field of our better stayers by 6
lengths. Corey Brown has ridden him recently and he boasts 3 wins and a 5th from 4 rides on the son of Jet Master. Incidentally, he is a half brother to Tellina, was bred by Maine Chance Farms and was purchased at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale in 2013 for R1,6 million. He too looks a good staying prospect for 2016 and could be headed to the Derby.
Bye Debbie
It is a sad week here in Singapore as Debbie Hawkins ends her time at the Turf Club on Friday. As we became accustomed to back home, she did an outstanding job. I will always be grateful for the help and advice Debbie gave me not only when I arrived but throughout the last year. As I have mentioned, moving countries is tough and
adapting to the culture was not easy for me. Debbie was loved by all the owners and was the go- to Lady for any problems and in typical Debs style, it was sorted out quickly, efficiently and without hassle. I wish her well in her future endeavours and feel it is a very sad loss for the Singapore Turf Club. I have no doubt she will excel in whatever she takes on next and not only will racedays, but trials on a Tuesday and Thursday morning, not be the same without her. Till next time.
New SA Record At Fairview The Lammerskraal Stud-bred Western Winter mare Blizzard Belle set up a new Fairview 1000m course record on Monday when beating her stablemates Copper Parade and Oriental Tiger to win the third race, a Pinnacle Stakes.
IN a memorable race for the high-riding Yvette Bremner yard, Blizzard Belle was

A review of our records indicates that Blizzard Belle’s (admittedly wind assisted) time of 54,55 secs is the fastest ever run by a racehorse in South Africa over the turf

Please Talk To Us!
Let’s stamp out corruption THE National Horseracing Authority of South Africa have made a renewed appeal to the public to report any alleged illegal activities, cheating or any other malpractice involving racing to themselves for investigation. In a telephonic interview with the NHA’s Chief Investigating Officer, Riaan Van Rensburg, the Sporting Post was given the assurance that all reports with substance would be investigated. “We cannot respond to unsubstantiated and broad general allegations made by anonymous posters via newspapers or websites, but will respond to those who email or contact us telephonically. We treat information and informants with discretion and sensitivity and are determined to root out any corrupt practices,” he said. Van Rensburg said that wild stories of foul play and generalised character assassination of, for example jockeys and trainers as professional groups within the sport, merely served to damage the image of the game, to the detriment of all who were involved and who loved horseracing. He may be contacted on telephone 011 683 9283 or e-mailriaan@nhra.co.za

Nine-year-old Star Empire, who started his career in Durban in June of 2009, confirmed Mike de Kock’s pre-race assessment that he was “fresh as a daisy” when he mowed down a field of younger horses to win the Longines Master Collection Handicap over 2000m at Meydan in Dubai on Thursday night.
tar Empire joined Blue Stables in Dubai in 2010 and had his first run for his new owner M o h a m m e d Khaleel almost exactly five years ago, finishing third on 20 January 2011 before winning a stayer’s contest over 2485m on the old all-weather track at Meydan on 3 February 2011. The bay gelding has raced another sixteen times since, bagging two wins and 11 places. His biggest payday was a second to Brown Panther in the 2015 Gr2 Dubai Gold Cup, and after Thursday’s quite surprisingly easy success his career earnings (with currency conversions applied from statistics at hand) are in the region of $US900,000. In South African terms, that’s on average well over R1-million a year for every
year of Star Empire’s life and jockey Sam Hitchcott will be thanking his lucky stars for securing the ride on the game old money machine who happened to be at the top his game at the start of his sixth Dubai Carnival! Hitchcott rode a patient and well-judged race. Star Empire turned for home last but one and well out of his ground, but once in full stride he started closing in hand over fist, got to the leaders with 100m to run and won going away. Hitchcott said: “This was my first ride for Mike and thanks to the team for telling me about the horse. Christophe Soumillon said Star Empire takes time to get going. I had to ride him uncomplicated, ride him cold. In the straight I pulled him wide for a run to get him rolling!”
Mike commented: “Star Empire was working the best of my three. Christophe would have ridden him if he wasn’t contracted to Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. But Sam rode a good race, well done to him. “Star Empire hasn’t won first-up at the Carnival before. This was a very satisfying win for us, horses like him only get four runs a year. Sometimes we complain about training old horses, but I wouldn’t mind a few more nine-year-olds like this one. I’m surprised they didn’t give him an attendance award tonight!” Asked whether Star Empire would be raced along the same preparatory route for the 2016 Dubai Gold Cup, Mike said: “He will be penalised by the handicapper so we will probably have to rethink one or two of his next runs.”
The stable had a good start to the Carnival with a win, two thirds and two fourths and with the likes of Mubtaahij, Ertijaal (AUS), Tannaaf, Tellina, Liquid Mercury, Mastermind and others being prepared for forthcoming meetings, things look well on target for big season. Mike commented: “The eight-year-old Prayer For Relief ran a cracking race in third, in the Al Maktoum Race 1. It was heartwarming because he’s come a long way. Declan Cronin did months of rehabilitation on the horse’s feet. “Prayer For Relief worked without shoes for a year, he was shod for the first time again today before the race. On what he showed tonight he could be a feature contender this season. “Sanshaawes gave another honest account and earned a stake. Atomic Rush made a good comeback, we kept him out of trouble and he ran on. He will improve. Anaerobio was stuck for running room, he could’ve finished closer than fourth.” www.mikedekockracing.com
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale
More Records Tumble
A
Momentum from the record-breaking Book 1 session of the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale carried over to Book 2 this past Sunday with new benchmarks in average and gross, boosted by two horses sold for Aus$230,000 (US$160,146) each.
colt by Written Tycoon and a filly by Sebring topped sales on day five, where six lots went for $200,000 ($139,254) or more and 28 sold for six figures. Buoyant trade helped push the average to $61,977 ($43,143), up 12% from last year’s Book 2 sale, while the total receipts for 199 horses sold came in at $12,333,500 ($8,585,561), soaring 25%—both figures records. The median price of $50,000 ($34,813) was up 25% for the same day in 2015. The top-priced colt, by Written Tycoon out of Rate the Choice, was purchased by Victorian
trainer Mark Riley from the consignment of Woodside Park. He is a half brother to two winners, including to Hong Kong victor Graceful Kingdom. The colt’s dam, a once-raced Redoute’s Choice mare, is a three-quarter sister to Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Bradbury’s Luck and she hails from the family of Skates, who is the dam of this week’s $1.5 million Pierro colt and reigning Golden Slipper winner (Aus-I) winner Vancouver. Later in the day, Newhaven Park’s Sebring filly from Allow was sold to B2B Bloodstock also for co-sale-topping price of $230,000. The grey filly is the sixth foal of Rahy’s 2006 Queensland Oaks (Aus-I)-winning daughter Allow, whose three
runners to date are all winners. “Competition was strong, as evidenced by the 81% clearance rate and the momentum from Book 1 flowed through the day,” said Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox. “The combined gross of Book 1 and Book 2 is almost $129 million ($89,796,190) and that is over $27 million ($18,794,551) more than last year. “ The Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale continued as we went to print on Tuesday with Book 3 and will be followed by a small and select racehorse sale. www.bloodhorse.com
Power Failure Initiated TAB Crisis
Tote Meltdown TAB has completed an investigation into the causes of an unscheduled tote system shutdown last Friday night that gave rise to various issues including delaying the declaration of results and payouts for the last two races at the Greyville night meeting. DISGRUNTLED punters expressed their anger and frustration with the tote system going down, resulting in undisclosed revenue losses and serious questions being raised of Phumelela’s IT capabilities. The unfortunate chain of events was apparently set in motion by a power failure in Johannesburg on Friday evening. TAB’s UPS back-ups immediately kicked in,but are designed to power the tote system for a limited time only.
Subsequent generator malfunctions, including startermotor failure in a generator purchased recently, then left TAB with no option but to perform an unscheduled shutdown of the tote betting system in order to protect data integrity. The system was restarted about an hour later after generator repairs had been carried out, but communications with international commingling partners were lost during that period and
the unscheduled system shutdown also caused several software glitches. Consequently, all international bets into commingled pools affected by the loss of links were excluded because of the loss of data integrity, with relevant pool totals diminishing accordingly. Issues with the tote system start-up sequencing resulted in TAB’s online betting platform going down for intermittent periods during the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate
race meeting at Kenilworth the next day. More software issues emerged on Saturday evening, which resulted in Pick 3 bets taken in South Africa on the Gulfstream Park race meeting in the USA having to be refunded. TAB apologised for all the issues flowing from the power failure and assured customers that additional operating procedures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence. With the J&B Met a matter of weeks away, punters will be hoping that the commitment to resolve the issues is not a hollow one – as the problem has historically plagued our major racedays.

Racing Royalty Geoff Woodruff trained multiple champion jockey Lester Piggott’s first ever winner as an owner and the two icons of the turf were spotted enjoying the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate on Saturday. With 4493 career wins, including nine Epsom Derby victories to his credit, the 80 year old Piggott is widely regarded as the greatest flat jockey of all time and his style has been copied the world over. Piggott loves Cape Town and is a close family friend of the Woodruffs, Terrance Millard and breeder Des Scott.

Lerena For HK SA champion jockey Gavin Lerena , who won the Longines International Jockeys Challenge in December, has been granted a Club Jockey’s licence in Hong Kong for the period 28 February 2016 until 1 May 2016, both dates inclusive. That means that he won’t be chasing the SA title again this term.
MASTER TIME
Jet Master’s smart son Time Odyssey was a R1,6 million buy from the 2013 Emperors Palace National Sale and he impressed on Sunday with a fluent win in the $80 000 Kranji Stakes .The Pat Shaw trained gelding put six lengths between himself and his rivals in the 1800m contest as he coasted home to victory under jockey Corey Brown. It was a fourth Singapore success for Time Odyssey, who now looks likely to head for the Derby.
Mountainous won the Welsh National for the second time with an impressive triumph at Chepstow. The 2013 winner, a 9-1 shot under jockey Jamie Moore, hit the front with three fences to go to beat Firebird Flyer (25-1) and Shotgun Paddy (12-1) into second and third respectively.Trained by Kerry Lee, the 11-year-old is the first double winner of the race since Bonanza Boy in 1989.
Stakes Hike
Stakes for Royal Ascot 2016 have been increased £1 million (18%) from 2015 to a record £6,580,000 for the five-day meet. Officials said £700 000 would be spent on a new unsaddling enclosure that will be ready for use in time for this year, which runs from 14 to 18 June.
That is the amount of the gross first cheque at current rates of exchange that will be banked by the winning owner of the victorious 3yo in next Saturday’s CTS Million Dollar. The horse that runs fifth will earn R674 828.
SILVANO SHINES Silvano’s five individual winners this past weekend highlights the desirability of his draft on offer at next week’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
His 25 lots includes a colt out of champion and Vodacom Durban July winner Dancer’s Daughter (Lot 187), a full sister to SA Derby winner Seal (Lot 57), a half brother to Gr1 winner and young Cape sire Potala Palace (Lot 138), and a sister to Silvano’s R2 million plus earner Tellina (Lot 105).
THE SMART ROUTE
Maurice (Screen Hero - Mejiro Frances) has been awarded both the Japan Racing Association’s Horse of the Year for 2015 and Best Sprinter or Miler award. Maurice dominated the voting for the Horse of the Year award with 291 votes out of 215. The Horse of the Year title is the highest honour given to JRA-registered horses . The awards ceremony will be held on 25 January.
Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes winner Smart Call will attempt to follow in the successful footsteps of River Jetez (2010) and Igugu (2012) in the J & B Met but trainer Alec Laird has an even bigger target in mind. He told Michael Clower: “Winning this means that we now have a ticket for the Breeders’ Cup and we may well go for that, possibly via Mauritius but hopefully we can get a shorter route by then.”

Alec Laird
Alec Laird was born on 13 July 1960, a year before the first of his father - the great Syd Laird’s – seven wins in the Durban July. Alec jokes that he’s either known as ‘Syd’s son’ or London News’ trainer, but as Smart Call’s win in the Paddock Stakes proves, there’s a great deal more to him than that.
While he has been in the business most of his life, and very successfully too, it seems Alec has never got comfortable with the limelight and it comes as a shock to realise that he is in fact quite shy. Life is full of surprises! Rather than trading on the family legacy, Alec prefers to go quietly about his business and let his horses do the talking for him. When he does speak, his voice is gruff, but the words are surprisingly gentle. Below the serious reputation lies a lively intellect and an equally lively sense of humour and his stories are peppered with funny anecdotes and fascinating behind the scenes detail.
About Alec He shows me into Smart Call’s box while he fills me in on a bit of family history. Alec was born in Cape Town, the oldest of Syd and Marlene Laird’s three children, and spent his formative years at the famous, but sadly now long gone, Roamer Lodge. Asked whether he remembers much about the old place he says with a grin, “I remember the sand!” The family moved to Durban during the Sea Cottage years, and Alec did most of his schooling in KZN, before heading off for 2 years to complete his national service, where his surname got him in trouble with his commanding officer. Assuming Alec was related to the owners of tack shop Laird Leatherware, he was not happy to learn that Alec was in fact unable to get him a good price on a saddle. Alec worked as a farrier, joking that he made his mistakes on the army horses, but is proud of the fact that he can put a shoe on a horse. Syd tried hard to discourage him from becoming a trainer. “His uncle (Syd Garrett) also insisted on him learning a trade, so he became a fitter and turner on the railways. That’s how he lost the tip of one of his fingers – in one of the old locomotives.” Alec did attend three months
of university, but says his interest waned when the first set of exams rolled round and he headed to Joburg to join his father as an assistant at his Alberton base.
that was the first winner in my name. That was on the 20th of February. The owners were wonderful – they simply made out the cheques to me and that was it.”
“By then he’d had most of his big horses, but they were exciting times and we had some good horses. It was tough setting up in Joburg, but we got it right. I was keen to go overseas to learn about training, but my dad said ‘What can they teach you that I can’t?’ I suppose he had a point,” Alec says drily.
Mill Hill won again in the Lancome Fillies Handicap and gave him his first Gr1 in his first year of training. “I think it helped,” he says modestly. “It helped kick me off. When I took over the string, we had 60 boxes. There was no money in the bank, but no debt. I was 28 - almost ready. At that age, you’re bullet proof of course, but part of being a trainer is that you have to believe in yourself. You make mistakes – you think you need to be hard on them, then you feel sorry for them and you’re too soft – you’ve got to find the balance. When you’re winning, you know you’ve got it. Like my dad said, in this game, you’re always learning and whether it’s someone at the bottom of the ladder or the top, everyone has something to teach you.”
“I learnt by watching. He said ‘keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut and he gave me three years to be a sponge. He was spot on, almost to the day. After that, I started having my own opinions and in that way it wasn’t easy. He didn’t enjoy other ideas too much.”
Stretching his wings “My best times were when he was away raiding Cape Town or Durban, because that’s when I got to try out my own ideas and that’s when I learnt the most. The first time he went away, I overworked the horses. We discussed it when he got back and I realised he was right. The second time, I underworked them. Eventually I got it right. There were no cell phones in those days, so while he was away, I had to wait till the end of the day to phone and say how things went. I loved phoning him when we’d had a winner.” He rubs his wrists thoughtfully. Syd was in Cape Town for the 1988 Guineas with a filly called Mill Hill, when he died of a heart attack. “He insisted on going to Cape Town on his own – he had no assistant and was doing it all himself. He had a heart attack and dropped dead in Barn 6 on the 8th of February. I had to go down and sort everything out. Mill Hill was scheduled to run in the Rex Trueform at Kenilworth – it’s an 1800m race that isn’t on the programme anymore. She ran and she won and
After training from Alberton, Alec moved to Randjesfontein about 20 years ago and currently has a string of about 100 horses. “I think I’ve got some nice 2yo’s coming through this year,” he predicts.
Picking horses While he was lucky enough to inherit some big name clients and Alec is quick to acknowledge that the Becks and Jaffees were very supportive. “They gave me horses, but had lots of other trainers to feed,” he points out, “so I’d only get 1 or 2 a year. I have a system of picking yearlings. I grade them either 1, 2 or 3. A 1 star is ok, and should win a race, 2 is a decent horse. Threes are very rare. Talk about luck. I rated Crimson Waves about a 1 and he was a R30k buy that Beck bought back. “Turned out to be the best horse I’ve ever had. Unfortunately he broke down, which was partly the farrier and partly my fault. I’d brought three horses to Cape Town for
the Met in 1993. Queen’s Gold got biliary and never ran, but I decided to give him a run in the Merchants. Crimson Waves had been showing me something at work, but he’d overreached and missed 10 days of training. It was our last meeting before going home, so I decided to get a run under his belt. Martin Uys sprinted him up on the Saturday and he pulled up blowing hard. I didn’t know whether I was doing the right thing, but we ran him on the Wednesday and he won easily and of course couldn’t blow out a candle. “I was so excited – I said right then and there I was going to win the Guineas. Back home, Toby van Booma rode him in a 1200m Juvenile Plate – he took a hold and still won by 6 lengths. He missed the Nursery because he was shin sore, was a bit underdone for the Smirnoff and got beaten into 4th. He had terribly boxy feet. Just before the Administrators, we had a new farrier who changed the hoof angles entirely. Crimson Waves went down in the Administrators and with that and the different farriery he chipped both fetlocks. He recovered and he won again, but he was never the same,” he says ruefully. Sacred Jungle was another Beck buy, although Alec says he had very little to do with the purchase. “Beck just passed me at the sales, stuck the slip into my pocket, wagged a finger at me and said ‘Don’t f it up!’” London News had received a 2 star rating on Alec’s shortlist. “He was a nice horse, but the Jaffee’s wanted a Bush Telegraph. There were a few on the list and London News was right at the end of day 3. As the sale wore on and the others were sold, he got nicer and nicer,” he quips. When did he know he was a champion? “When you pick them at the sales, you already have an idea, but it was probably when he won the Dingaans – you don’t win the Dingaans with a bad horse.” The London News story is a wellworn one by now, but asked how he coped with all the furore and the hoopla of the international campaign he just shrugs. “He was an easy horse to train. And you just take it one day at a time.”
As we chat, big names trip off his tongue easily and after nearly 3 decades in the game, there are reels of them. Looking at his raiding string, one picks up a trend and Alec concedes that he likes a Classic type. However, despite the reputation he doesn’t always go to the sale with a big budget and likes to look for value. “If Legislate was bought for R100k, then there’s no excuse. I like to think I can pick a horse, but if I could guarantee it, I wouldn’t need any owners,” he says philosophically. Bezanova is a case in point and he has a good strike rate producing Gr1’s with first season sires, including Greys Inn, Judpot and now Ideal World.
Smart filly While we’re talking, Smart Call moves around her box, allowing a good chance to appraise her thoroughly. She has a long, delicate face, with almost comically large ears. She has a good length of rein with a deep girth and strong loin and the sort of conformation that would have the old English painters in raptures. She also has a very good temperament and as she moves around the box, finding things to pick at, she frequently stops to nuzzle her trainer, or simply to
stand quietly next to him and breathe on his shoulder. “It’s a sign of good breeding,” Alec says, giving her an appreciative stroke. “The top European studs start with good temperaments.” It seems the international escapades with London News may stand him in good stead as the Paddock Stakes qualifies for the same ‘win and you’re in’ scheme as the Queen’s Plate and they may well be off to the Breeders’ Cup. “It’s a pipe dream perhaps, but Jessica (Slack) is keen, so why not?” “She’s pulled up well, she’s trotting sound, she’s happy. We’ll have to get her out sooner rather than later, so that we have time to prep over there, but we’ll give her one more run. The Majorca is a lovely race to go for, but it would be coming back in distance and I think she’s better over 1800-2000, maybe even 2400m, so we’ll take our chances in the Met. “It’s a top race and we’ll be taking on the boys, so she’ll need to find a few lengths, but that’s the route we’re going. We’ll have a crack at the Met and then look at which avenue to go, but we’ve got a ticket to the Breeders’ Cup and as long as Jess is keen it will be a great experience. But we came for the Paddock, so for the time being, it’s Mission Accomplished.”

A review of the week's best SPEEDRATINGS
Joyous Times
Turffontein 2nd January They raced on the inner track on Tuesday where the fastest of the three 1000m races was the Gr3 Lebelo Sprint won by VIKING HERO. In a race where virtually all raced handy, the Mullins Bay gelding ran on stoutly at the business end of the race, and just got the better of TIGER TERRITORY (led 110m) by a neck. The faster of the two 1400m races was the MR93 Handicap for 3yo’s in which the improving LUNAR APPROACH registered his third career victory. Always handy, Sean Tarry’s charge was ridden to lead going through the 400m and kept up to his work all the way to the wire, won very comfortably by three and a half. Another to win a tad cosily on this card was CHRISTMAS CAROL in the MR76 affair over 1200m. Running on stoutly from midfield, Geoff Woodruff ’s charge struck the front 150m out and with the rest well beaten, she won going away by a length and a half from ESTIMATION. TITBITS
The newcomer AUSSIE AUSTIN was flying at the finish when only failing to land the maiden juvenile plate over 1000m by the narrowest of margins. The 3yo ARPAD ran on well from the backend of midfield when a three quarter length runner up in the maiden Horses worth following at their next few starts... plate over CHRISTMAS CAROL (G Woodruff, Gauteng) 1160m.

The Fastest Milkcart
Kenilworth 2nd January The listed Sophomore Sprint for 3yo’s topped the bill in Cape Town on Saturday and in what proved to be the fastest of the three 1200m events on the card ERNIE found the winner’s enclosure. The Elusive Fort gelding raced in the rear early on, but in what was a tightly bunched field, he was only four lengths off the pace. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m marker and looked to win with a little in hand by three quarters. The only other distance to stage more than one race on the card was 1400m and quickest home from these two was PRINCE OF THIEVES in the MR86 affair. Backed into favouritism at the track (3/1 into 15/10), Joey Ramsden’s charge was soon up handy. He put his head in front going through the 200m and drew clear easily in the closing stages of the race to score by three and three quarters. Another to win with authority was FELICITY FLYER in the maiden juvenile plate over 800m. Always deep in the red, Mike Bass’ charge was soon positioned close to the speed. She only had to be pushed out in order to take up the running at the 200m pole, and won going away by a length and three quarters. TITBITS Backed into joint favouritism in the maiden plate over 1400m, KATIES JAY ran on best of all over the final 400m and with the rest well beaten won going away from STOCKADE by a length and three quarters.
Scottsville 3rd January A maiden juvenile plate over 800m got proceedings underway in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday and here we saw a smart performance from the Mike De Kock trained newcomer INTRIGUING LADY. Allowed to ease out to 18/10 joint favourite from 11/10 at the track, the New Approach filly was soon at the head of affairs. She was always in control and with some in hand won very easily by four and three quarters. Four of the afternoon’s nine races were run over 1000m and fastest against the clock in these was BELOVED COUNTRY in the non-black type African Holly Handicap. Just six went to post and although she wasn’t the quickest into stride, she was always handy. She ran on stoutly at the business end of the race and in what proved to be a real thriller she got the better of the Victory Moon gelding MUSCATT by a neck. The remaining four races were all staged over 1200m and quickest home here was SHEZALEADER in the graduation plate. Freely available at 10/1 on the off, Dennis Bosch’s charge raced up with the speed throughout. She began to TOP SPEED RATINGS assert her authority shortly after for this WEEKEND passing the 300m pole and went (Ratings shown have already been on to score very easily by five and adjusted to allocated weights) three quarters. FAIRVIEW (FRI) TITBITS After being a little slow into stride, REGARDSTOBROADWAY didn’t find the clearest of passages en-route from the rear when getting up late to win the MR77 Handicap over 1000m. ETERNAL ICE won the maiden plate over 1200m going away by four.

best of all over the final 400m and won going away after striking the front 80m or so from home. Quickest home in the two maiden events over 1400m was CHEROKEE GREY in the boys’ affair. Sent off fourth in the betting market at 11/2, the 3yo son of Greys Inn was always in touch with the leaders. He made his move going through the 300m and after a thrilling tussle with the slightly more fancied PROFIT RATIO he got the verdict by a half. TITBITS The always handy SPRING DANCE was eased late when winning the girl’s division of the maiden 1400m with authority.

A conditions plate over 1400m topped the bill in Cape Town on Wednesday and in what proved to be the faster of the two 1400m events victory went to the Dennis Drier trained EVENTUAL ANGEL. Having her third run after an eleven month layoff here, the Right Approach mare was soon positioned close to the speed. She kept on determinedly at the business end of the race and in a blanket finish she got the verdict over the more fancied ALEXIS by three quarters. The faster of the two 1600m events was the MR70 Handicap in which the 3yo MUTZI registered his second career victory from just five starts. Quick Double Tuesday’s action took place on the outside track where the faster of the two 1200m races was the MR80 Handicap won by the lightly raced PURE BLONDE. Having only his second outing following a ten month layoff, Alec Laird’s charge was always handy. He was ridden to lead approaching the 200m marker and with a ton in hand won easing down by just over a length. Race four on the card was a MR72 Handicap and in what proved to be the faster of the two 1000m races victory went to the 5yo GUN FIGHTER. Soon at the head of affairs the 9/1 shot kept up a healthy gallop throughout, and won well by a length and a quarter from the friendless SECRET PLAN (12/1 out to 33/1) TITBITS The well supported THIS IS SPARTA flew late when getting up in the very last stride to win the maiden plate over 1400m. Powerful Male Line Continues to “Turn”
A
Legal Eagle, winner of Saturday’s Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, is a member of a formidable male line, which has enjoyed a tremendous run of success in 2015.
2yos – Most Beautiful and Painted Cliffs.
son of former July winner and Equus Champion, Greys Inn (by Zabeel), Legal Eagle traces back directly to the great sire, Turn-To, whose descendants have made their mark the world over.
Al but 11 other Gr1 winners, and he has since become a highly successful broodmare sire (Inbreeding to Al Mufti has been seen to succeed here, with the graded stakes winners, Flash Drive and Hot Affair, both inbred to the Roberto son).
In 2015, this particular male line was responsible for the champion sires in all of Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa – quite a feat in an era where the Native Dancer and Northern Dancer male lines generally reign supreme.
Seven times champion sire of 2yos and consistently among the top stallions in South Africa, Captain Al was joined by his champion son, Captain Of All, at Klawervlei in 2015.
Japan In Japan, Deep Impact landed his fourth consecutive sires’ crown – his sire Sunday Silence traces back directly to Turn-To through his grandsire, Hail To Reason. Sire of more than 20 Gr1 winners, Deep Impact had runners last season that included Gr1 Hong Kong Cup hero, A Shin Hikari and Gr1 George Ryder winner, Real Impact. Another descendant of this great male line to flourish in Japan last year was Maurice, recently named that country’s Horse of The Year for 2015. Winner of both the Gr1 Yasuda Kinen and Gr1 Hong Kong Mile last year when unbeaten during the season, Maurice is a son of Gr1 Japan Cup winner, Screen Hero, with the latter being a great grandson of Derby winner and hugely influential sire, Roberto (by Hail To Reason). Remarkably, nine of the top 11 sires (by prize money) last year in Japan are descendants of Turn-To. Turn-To’s son, Hail To Reason, has more than made his mark in Japan, his son Roberto being the sire of important sires, Brian’s Time and Real Shadai, while another son, Halo, is responsible for dominant champion sire, Sunday Silence, whose sons and grandsons now dominate the Japanese sire lists.
New Zealand In New Zealand it was another branch of the male line to take championship honours. Savabeel is a direct descendant of TurnTo’s son, Sir Gaylord, whose grandson, Sir Tristram, was one of the greatest stallions ever to stand at stud in the Southern Hemisphere. Savabeel completed a rare male line generation trio, as he, his sire, Zabeel and his grandsire, Sir Tristram, have now all won general sires titles in New Zealand. Savabeel is currently second on the 2015-2016 general sires list, with another Zabeel son, Zed, being in seventh place.
South Africa Captain Al picked up his first general sires list in South Africa last season, where he was the first Turn-To male line descendant to prevail in this country since his own sire, Al Mufti (by Roberto), took the title back in 1999. Al Mufti ranks as one of the best sires in recent times to have stood in South Africa, with his offspring including not only Captain
Interestingly, another of the country’s top stallions, Dynasty, traces back directly in female line to Source Sucree (his sixth dam) – the dam of Turn-To himself. Exciting young sire, Philanthropist, whose first local crop race this season, is another interesting descendant of Turn-To.
Australia Another hugely successful modern day sire descended from Hail To Reason and thus from Turn-To is the Southern Halo son, More Than Ready. A horse whose descendants have excelled the world over (his South African runners including the Gr1 winners Entisaar and Gimmethegreenlight), More Than Ready was represented by 15 stakes winners last year. The former Gr1 King’s Bishop Stakes winner reached a notable landmark recently, when
Turn-To, the founder of this remarkable and ongoing dynasty, made just eight starts, winning six of them. His notable wins included the Garden State Stakes at two and the (subsequent Gr1) Flamingo Stakes at three.
Turn-To Centre Pivot became his 150th stakes winner, when successful in the Listed Bernborough Handicap. The sire of three Breeders’ Cup winners to date, and sire of promising stallions Pluck (NZ’s currently third leading first crop sire) and Sebring (whose first crop included Horse Of The Year, Dissident), More Than Ready has headed the leading sires of 2yos lists in both Australia and North America.
U.K. Yet another promising sire to have emerged from this male line is five time Gr1 winning miler, Canford Cliffs, who ended 2015 as the third leading first crop sire in Britain (by stakes). The son of Hail To Reason descendant and former Gr1 Prix Morny hero Tagula, made a bright start, included producing a pair of Group winners in his first crop of
A chestnut son of Nasrullah’s three parts brother, Royal Charger, TurnTo has been described by various sources as a “deepbodied, muscular, handsome chestnut with a look of great quality and plenty of natural speed”. His best performers included champion 2yos, First Landing, (sire of fellow 2yo champ Riva Ridge) and Hail To Reason, the Gr1 Futurity winner and successful sire, Cyane, Best Turn (sire of outstanding sire, Coxs Ridge) and Sir Gaylord (sire of Derby winner Sir Ivor and outstanding sire and broodmare sire Habitat). Turn-To sired a total of 25 stakes winners in all.
