SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 26th - SUNDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2016
THE IRREPRESSIBLE POWER OF BLOOD IS THE FOUNDATION OF THE BREED • Son of the most successful dual-hemisphere stallion of the current era. • Together with Danehill, Traffic Guard’s sire More Than Ready is the only other “shuttler” to chalk up Sires’ Premierships in both hemispheres, and is the sire of the Queen’s Plate champion, Gimmethegreenlight. • Traffic Guard comes from the immediate family of Durban July (Gr.1) hero, Occult and SA Derby (Gr.1) victor, Chief Advocate.
www.summerhill.co.za
Now, Sovereign Magic, four-in-the-money, brings it home as Traffic Guard’s first winner.

Champagne Haze steps out with regular rider Andrew Fortune and could get back to winning ways
Gr2 Gauteng Guineas PAST WINNERS
2010
Betting World Gr2 GAUTENG GUINEAS
T
at Turffontein on Saturday
There is plenty to play for in Saturday’s R1 million Gr2 Gauteng Guineas, which looks to be one of the most hotly contested renewals in many a year. After last year’s away victory, the silverware is likely to stay at home with powerful local yards dominating the line-up.
rainer Mike Azzie will be keen to get rolling in the top league again after a few disappointments in recent months and his Go Deputy gelding Abashiri looks to be one of the most exciting 3yo’s to come out of this top yard in years. The gelding’s form speaks for itself and it was his Listed Sea Cottage Stakes win at his penultimate start that suggested he is ready to step into the classic scene. Despite running green, he came from way back there and stamped himself as a serious prospect – after stakes placings early on. If he runs straight, he will be in the mix.
Aussie Pair
Johan Janse Van Vuuren is another man who has enjoyed mixed success with his 3yo’s and sends out a power Aussiebred coupling of Brazuca and New Predator. Brazuca has got to be the best most frustrating horse in town, with three Gr1 runnerup credits to his credit. He returns from the Cape with his massive reputation intact after the Guineas and Derby, and Anton Marcus could be the tonic needed. New Predator ran slightly below expectations in the
Tony Ruffel when only managing a fourth cheque. His memorable ding dong battle with Noah From Goa in the Dingaans is still well in the forefront of our minds, and he is obviously top-class. Champagne Haze ran a cracker in the Tony Ruffel when going down a half length to Suyoof. The mile will be right up his alley again and from a decent draw off a good pace, Andrew Fortune will have his eyes firmly on the prize.
De Kock Duo
Mike de Kock’s pair of Tony Ruffel winner Suyoof and Muwaary are both decent sorts. Suyoof has drawn awfully but goes for four in a row and with Anthony Delpech staying loyal to him, there must be plenty more to come. Muwaary may need it after a 14 week break following his unplaced run in the Selangor Cup, where he suffered a nasal discharge and post-race distress. He is drawn at pole and should be watched in his next few starts. Top Cape heavyweight Bernard Fayd’herbe travels from the Cape to pilot the Kahal colt Romany Prince, for trainer Ormond Ferraris. He was beaten 5,40 lengths in the Tony Ruffel Stakes but was seen to be running
1 Pierre Jourdan 57.0 ( 3) 28/10 2 Havasha 57.0 (11) 10/1 3 Galileo’s Galaxy 57.0 ( 6) 28/10
on nicely and should enjoy the mile on the Turffontein outside track. Interestingly, he gave Abashiri 2kgs when chasing him home 2,50 lengths shy in the Sea Cottage Stakes. That sort of effort certainly gives Romany Prince some credibility. The second of the Mike Azzie duo is Le Clos, a very decent looking son of Jay Peg, who steps up to the mile for the first time. On breeding he should get the trip, and his gutsy last effort when staying on strongly to be beaten just 0,55 lengths behind Suyoof (level weights) and Champagne Haze (conceding 2kgs) was a top drawer performance given the use made of him.
Decent Sorts
Gavin Van Zyl saddles a pair of former KZN-based gallopers. Rocketball has won two of his three Gauteng starts and looks a nice sort in the making. The son of Judpot is 4kgs better off with Abashiri on his 3,25 length third place finish in the Sea Cottage Stakes and there should be little between them here. His wide draw will not be in his favour but he is a horse with tactical options. Stablemate Celtic Captain won 3 (2 on the polytrack)
of 7 starts in Durban and was not disgraced first time out in Joburg, when running handy for a 3,80 length fifth to Suyoof in the Tony Ruffel. This trip should be more Celtic Captain’s game and the Captain Al colt will have every chance from the 2 draw.
Tarry Quartet
For once in a Highveld feature, Sean Tarry is not hogging the top of the betting boards but the SA champion trainer could still have a big say in the finish with his quartet of runners. Lunar Approach had decent form before travelling to Cape Town for the CTS Million Dollar, where he ran unplaced and 5,95 lengths behind Illuminator. He never showed there but if he has travelled well, will need to be included and is the mount of stable jockey S’manga Khumalo. Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes runner-up Liege only earned once in four starts down in the Cape recently. The son of Dynasty ran on well for third in the Listed Politician Stakes, but failed to spark in the Derby. Rikitikitana has some decent form at a mile and may have been outpaced when staying on for 5 lengths back in the Tony Ruffel Stakes. Off a decent pace on this track, the son of Toreador will be running at them late and it remains to be seen how he copes with the top four. Malak El Moolook was a further 1,70 lengths behind Rikitikitana last time and his form really doesn’t fit the profile of a likely Guineas winner.
2011
KZN Visitor
KZN challenger Ole Gunnar has won his last two outings and has done little wrong in four career starts to date. But he is unexposed at this level and how strong is the KZN form? He beat Napoli when winning his maiden, and that fellow disappointed at his post-maiden start on Sunday when 5,75 lengths behind Team Guys. Ole Gunnar won a Graduation beating Dante’s Legacy at his last start. He comes in with a 12 draw but is proven at the mile, and makes for a quartet kicker prospect at best. Robbie Sage’s Coral Fever

looks a very optimistic entry on his current form and rating. The son of Judpot finished 5,80 lengths behind Suyoof in the Tony Ruffel Stakes at his last start and looks well held on that score.
Who Will Be King?
The R7-million SASCOC Triple Crown for 3-yearolds is the richest series of races in Africa. A bonus of R2 million will be paid to the owner of the horse that wins all three legs. The last winner of this prestigious accolade was Geoff Woodruff’s Louis The King in 2014. The Triple Crown comprises the following: Leg 1: The R1-million Grand Parade Cape Guineas (Grade 1) 1600m which was run at Kenilworth on Saturday 19 December 2015. This was won by Noah From Goa, who does not run on Saturday. OR Leg 1: The R1-million Betting World Gauteng Guineas (Grade 2) 1600m which is run this Saturday on the Turffontein Standside. Leg 2: The R2-million SA Classic (Grade 1) 1800m which is run on the Turffontein Standside on Saturday 2 April 2016. Leg 3: The R2-million SA Derby (Grade 1) 2450m which is run on the Turffontein Standside on Saturday 30 April 2016. If ownership changes across the series, the bonus will be shared proportionately 5% of the bonus will be paid to winning trainer/s, 5% to the winning jockey/s and 0.5% to the winning groom.

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 26th - SUNDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2016 The 7yo Ice Machine is in bright form
Double Whammy has the class to win
Gr2 HAWAII STAKES at Turffontein on Saturday
C
Jockey Anton Marcus and the 7yo Ice Machine go together like love and marriage - or if you prefer, a horse and carriage. The pair look very likely to produce the goods to deliver a knockout blow in a high quality line-up in Saturday’s R400 000 Gr2 Hawaii Stakes at Turffontein.
harles Laird sends out the Silvano gelding who bids for his eleventh career win (as well as a personal hattrick) as he takes on ten class opponents over the Turffontein standside 1400m. Interestingly Ice Machine has only ever run once at Turffontein and that was in the Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge where he was beaten 5,25 lengths by his main opponent on Saturday. Ice Machine conceded a half kilo that afternoon and at level weights on Saturday, he has it all to do. But he is bang in form, having clocked up meritorious wins at his last two starts. Trip To Heaven is a top class younger horse and was probably outpaced in the Joburg Merchants when failing to find his usual finish and fading out and running
a 3,55 length eighth. He is top-class over this trip and presents a major threat.
depth in this line-up and her recent form does not inspire confidence.
Double
De Kock Duo
His stablemate Whiteline Fever is getting on with it but boasts the distinction of having won this race in 2013 and 2014. The son of Right Approach finished unplaced and 4 lengths behind Chekilli last year. Drawn wide out, the others may be better. Johan Janse Van Vuuren will be looking for a major effort from the lightly raced 2014 Dingaans winner Unparalleled, who showed a spark of form return in an incident filled race last time out. The son of Lateral was one of the better 3yo’s of his year and has the chance to show his credentials. His stablemate Winter Star looks to be out of her
High On Hawaii
The Hawaii Stakes is a support feature to the Gauteng Guineas double feature. The race is named in honour of the Platberg Stud bred Hawaii, a champion at age two and three in South Africa after which he was sent to race in the United States by owner Charles W. Engelhard, Jr. where he was voted the 1969 American Champion Turf Horse. Among his wins in the United States was a track record setting performance in the mile-and-a-half Man o’ War Stakes on turf at Belmont Park. Hawaii retired from racing after the 1969 racing season having won 21 of 28 career starts with earnings of US$371 292. In his career his major awards included South African Champion Two-Year Old (1966), South African Champion ThreeYear Old (1967) and American Champion Turf Horse (1969) He stood at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentuck and famously sired Henbit, who raced in England and won the 1980 Epsom Derby. Hawaii died at Claiborne Farm in 1990 at age twenty-six and was buried in their Marchmont division equine cemetery. In an illustrious career, Hawaii’s Major wins included such races as the African Breeders’ Plate (1966), the Chairman’s Handicap (1967), the South African Guineas (1967), the Clairwood Winter Handicap (1967) the Cape Mellow-Good Guineas (1967) and the Transvaal Spring Champion Stakes (1968).
The Mike de Kock pair of Moofeed and Jayyed are not without hope of running a place. The Duke Of Marmalade entire Moofeed has a great turn of foot and races like a horse that needs more ground. Ironically his best efforts have come off blistering pace in the sprints. The year younger Jayyed was beaten 0,90 lengths by Ice Machine last time in receipt of 4kgs. He has a tough task here on 3kgs worse terms against the seasoned warrior. Captain Aldo won a cracker last time under Piere Strydom when winning the Wolf Power 1600, beating Shadow Ofhis Smile. The 5yo son of Captain Al has won 3 of his last 4 starts and his overall form and consistency is impeccable. Bernard Fayd’herbe looks a perfect foil for the St John Gray charge from the 1 draw.
Star Turn
Coenie De Beer’s Talktothestars returns from the Cape after five runs down in the Cape. The very fast son of Overlord was not disgraced in the Cape sprint features but his best trip seems to be around 1200m and he looks a touch outclassed here. Mister Matchett has his first run for Weiho Marwing after relocating from Darryl Hodgson in the Cape. The son of Badger’s Drift has lost form after a four race winning streak and is another who looks outgunned in a race of this nature.
LADY’S PENDANT (Listed) at Fairview on Friday
K
It is great to be back on the turf at Fairview on Friday where the R150 000 Listed Lady’s Pendant heads the programme. Glen Kotzen looks to have a very strong hand in the fillies and mares weight for age contest – one of those with penalties!
otzen has been in a decent vein of form and is always a factor when raiding the Eastern Cape – home to his former satellite yard and a track he knows very well. He saddles the high quality Judpot filly Double Whammy, who carries a deserved topweight and the year younger Night In Tahiti.
Class Galloper Double Whammy would only need to recapture 70% of her best form to beat this lot. The 4yo has been quiet this term but a glance back over her formline shows that she won the 2014 Gr3 Diana Stakes and paced it with the likes of big names like Cold As Ice and Majmu. She has come down from a career high 103 to her current 95 rating and her last run in the Majorca can be ignored. She was slow off and was also not striding out. Her best form is at 1200m to 1400m and if Sandile Khathi can get some spark out of her, she must go in to all perms. Night In Tahiti failed to fire in the Sceptre Stakes last time but was placed in the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes and has the enormous distinction of a victory over Cape Fillies Guineas winner Silver Mountain on debut. Anthony Andrews rides the daughter of Kildonan, who, like her stablemate, is having her first run here.
Snaith Strike Kotzen’s Cape colleague Justin Snaith saddles two 100 rated Captain Al 3yo’s in Blue Dawn and Jo’s Bond. Blue Dawn has hardly put a foot wrong since shedding her maiden in September and has the commendable record of 5 wins from her 11 starts. She was beaten by SA 1000m record holder Blizzard Belle last time by 1,25 lengths at level weights, but had the excuse that her saddle slipped. She is very versatile, having won on both surfaces and is comfortable over the 1200m. Jo’s Bond went helter skelter in the CTS Million Dollar last time, where she cast a shoe in running and ran a bad race finishing over 16 lengths back. She won three on the trot in the Cape over
the minimum trip before running out of the money in the Gr2 Southern Cross Stakes.
Consistent Tara Laing’s House Of Lorraine has been a model of consistency since relocating from Brett Crawford but looks held by Blue Dawn on their last meeting at the weight turnaround. That said, the daughter of Dynasty is capable of running a place. Alan Greeff saddles a very decent four-way coupling, and all have their claims at best. Jockey engagements suggest that another former Brett Crawford runner in Bella Spumante is the elect. The daughter of Dynasty has won both of her starts in the Eastern Cape in smooth style and looks set to produce another good performance. Shauntrel is another consistent galloper but she does look held by Blue Dawn on their last course-and –distance clash. The Australian bred Purely Atomic is the third of the Greeff quartet. This enigmatic sort always seems to find something to beat her and may enjoy a reversion to the sprinting arena. Fascinating Filly has been a little disappointing and looks very well held by Blue Dawn.
Bremner Trio Yvette Bremner brings three ladies to the party and the unknown quantity is the former Alyson Wright trained Barega, who has her first run outside KZN. The daughter of Western Winter is effective over the 1200m and if not in need of it aftera 16 week break, could surprise into the quartet. Stablemates La Rebel and Agterskot may battle at these weight terms, but the latter appears to be improving and was not disgraced in mixed company last time when just over 5 lengths behind star 3yo male, Memphis Mafia. La Rebel was tried thrice in the Cape where she managed a second but failed to deliver in feature company. There is nothing much wrong with her earlier PE form and she can bounce back into the place money. Gavin Smith now looks after the former Glen Kotzen runner One Way Ticket he transfers from Durban and has her second lifetime run in PE. Her recent form looks quite poor and she will need to up her game.

The smart grey flyer Negroamaro looks the obvious choice
Wilgerbosdrift Gr2 GAUTENG FILLIES GUINEAS at Turffontein on Saturday The magnificent grey Fort Wood filly Negroamaro looks perfectly placed to secure a Triple Tiara first leg victory at Turffontein on Saturday. Bred by the sponsors, she ran an eyecatching prep in the Three Troikas Stakes and will be a banker bet for many.
P
oorly drawn in that feature event three weeks ago, Negroamaro was conservatively – and cleverly – ridden by Anton Marcus and failed by a stride to catch Madame Dubois. The ground made up on the outside over the final 250m was impressive and as a course and distance winner, she will relish the extra 200m on Saturday. And Johan Janse Van Vuuren’s charge has a comfortable draw on Saturday.
Wide Juxtapose has not been so lucky. The daughter of Judpot was 0,60 lengths third behind Negroamaro in the Three Troikas but shifts out 8 gates on Saturday. She’s A Dragon was 1,40 lengths behind in fourth positions and tries a mile for the first time. KZN raider Princess Varunya faces the biggest test of her career after four successive wins in her home province. Anthony Delpech rides the Australian-bred daughter of High Chaparral who will get the trip without an issue, but needs to prove she is in this class after striking in handicaps. Heaps Of Fun ran a poor race when 7,90 lengths back in the Three Troikas. Her two second placed efforts in the Gr2 Fillies Mile and the Listed Swallow Stakes show that she is no slouch and S’manga Khumalo knows her well. Persian Rug ran fifth and 3,10 lengths off in the Three Troikas and looks held by Negroamaro on her Fillies Mile run. Western Winter filly Frosty Friday has won
three on the trot since shedding her maiden and steps into the big league on Saturday. She has not been blessed with a draw and will need to show that she is much better than rated to make her presence felt.
Visitor KZN visitor Lala was supplemented for this race and has her first outing outside of KZN. The daughter of Visionaire is another who is tested for the first time but has shown decent ability with 3 wins from 10 starts. Mike Azzie’s Melliflora returns from an unplaced run in the CTS Million Dollar and has drawn wide again. She dropped away after running handily in the Fillies Mile and cannot be fancied. Her stablemates Jungle Mist and Penny Serenade have drawn on either end of the spectrum and with ratings in the high 80’s have it all to do. Geoff Woodruff’s Varsfontein Stud-bred pair of Christmas Carol and Alexa are in the same unexposed league. The beautifully bred Christmas Carol is well drawn and has stepped up from 1400m to 2000m in the process of winning her last three starts.
Glamour Girl Trainer Gary Alexander told Tabnews that his filly Crystal Glamour is a big runner. “I don’t say Crystal Glamour can beat Negroamaro. She’ll be hard to beat because she’s obviously such a smart filly. But Negroamaro might be looking for a touch further and it’ll depend on the pace. If she fluffs her lines, my filly has as big a chance
as any. “Crystal Glamour is a beautiful horse who packs a lot of class and, the way she’s been working, I think she’ll definitely finish in the first three,” said Alexander. “Draw a line through her last run because she was drawn very wide in the Three Troikas Stakes and didn’t get cover. She over-raced three deep all the way round the turn and just ran out of steam. She’s drawn midfield this time so things will be easier.” This two-time winner from four career starts finished 14th behind Madame Dubois in that race – her worst run yet. Alexander points to an earlier race as key to her chances. That was in the Bloodstock SA Ready To
Run Cup in October when Crystal Glamour finished a neck second to Lineker over 1400m. “That was a very good run in only her second start,” said Alexander. This will be her first race over further than 1450m but Alexander believes she will get the trip easily and, depending on how she comes out of the Fillies Guineas, will probably even enjoy the 1800m of the Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Classic in early April. That race forms the second leg of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara, with the Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks on Champions Day as the final race in the series. “We’ll take it one step at a time,” said her trainer. “These races are hard for some of these young horses.”

Princesses In-Waiting The R3.5-million / R4-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Triple Tiara for 3-year-old fillies is the richest series of races for fillies in Africa. The Triple Tiara has been worn by Igugu (2011) and Tiger Ridge filly Cherry On The Top (2013). The Elusive Fort filly Siren’s Call came within a heartbeat of the illustrious achievement last year when going down in the final leg, when beaten by Pine Princess. The Triple Tiara comprises the following: Leg 1: The R1-million Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas run at Kenilworth on Saturday 5 December 2015 and won by Silver Mountain OR
Leg 1: The R500 000 Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Guineas run on the Turffontein Standside this coming Saturday. Cup Cake and S’manga Khumalo are on their own where it counts

CAPE MILE at Kenilworth last Saturday
The Boland Stud-bred Var filly Cup Cake stole the show at Fairview on Friday with a facile victory in the R80 000 Breeders Guineas Plate to give S’manga Khumalo a hat-trick of winners on the afternoon.
wner Fred Crabbia is enjoying a good run and he registered a double with the same trainerjockey combination, with the fast improving Captain Quick coming home strongly to win an MR 71 Handicap a few races earlier. But the day belonged to Cup Cake, a winner now of 4 of her 5 turf starts and she is a typical example of gutsy dynamite in a small package, with the heart of a lion to match. Her racing career has been restricted to Port Elizabeth but she hails from a good family of winners – her half-brother Captain Aldo (Captain Al) won the Listed Wolf Power 1600 two weeks back – and it would be no surprise to see her take her chances up in KZN for the forthcoming Champions Season. Lethal up to 1400m, Cup Cake went off at 2-1 second choice in the ten horse field, with the real support for the promising Kanara, who touched 18-10. The 1400m turf non black-type contest was a formality, with Cup Cake jumping keenly
T
he timing of our chat is a pleasant coincidence for two reasons: Justin said that he was excited and honoured as he has just joined the Board of the Western Province Regional Racing Association. This is in line with the body’s progressive dynamic policy of introducing younger blood into the game. It follows the resignation of longstanding Director Tom Fowler, after nearly 15 years of unbroken service to Western Cape Racing. The timing of our interview is further sweetened in that GSB’s first purchase, who turned out to be their first runner and first winner, Miss Nightingale, won at Greyville on Friday night for the first time since her debut win last February!
Big Results The passionate Justin Vermaak, who works closely with retained and sponsored jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe, was thrilled at what has been achieved in a relatively short time. “It’s been an incredible year, we expected some growth but not quite of this magnitude this quickly. When we started with one horse I had a chat with Gavin Van Zyl about how he ran his syndicates for Team G and he told me
and grabbing the lead early on, as she led easily. Into the straight, she continued to find and then showed the sign of a decent horse, as she kicked again to draw clear to win by 3,25 lengths in a time of 84,27 secs. It was a typically professional ride by Khumalo, who didn’t fight his mount, where lesser jockeys may have tried to settle her. Assistant Des Mclachlan saddled the winner for the Snaiths. Girl In Time ran on nicely for second, with her stablemate Misnomer running a cracker for third. The favourite Kanara faded disappointingly to finish 4,05 lengths back and out of the cash. A R350 000 National Yearling Sale graduate, the Boland Stud bred Cup Cake is a daughter of Var out of the three-time winning Elliodor mare, Cuddle Me. She has been a model of genuine consistency, winning 4 of 8 starts, for 4 places and R210 200 in stakes. Trainers Duncan McKenzie and Alan Greeff shared the training honours with the Snaiths, with a double apiece.

A dismal effort by the favourite Night Trip opened the door for the well-travelled Big Cat to grind his way to a shock victory with a sustained effort down the inside rail in the R150 000 Cape Mile at Kenilworth on Saturday.
nconsidered in the betting for the non blacktype feature at 25-1, few punters saw the prowling cat in the shadows and the 6yo chestnut gelding made it a winning opening run for his new trainer under J&B Met winning rider, JP van der Merwe. Big Cat has been around. He started out life with Stan Elley (the man who signed for him as a yearling) in Phillipi and upon Elley’s retirement at the end of last season, he joined the KZN outfit of Dennis Drier. Now that Drier has returned home after the Cape season, the strapping 6yo has been left in the care of Brett
Crawford, and he is obviously enjoying his new home, judging by the enthusiasm of his victory on Saturday. The miler is Big Cat’s a-game, and well drawn at 2, there was nothing complicated about the way Van Der Merwe settled him in midfield as Milton went off to lead them. With a few, including the weak favourite Night Trip, opting to go outside in the run for home, Big Cat went down the inside rail and simply ground away, making up lengths inside the final 200m to win by a length in a time of 97,52 secs. Besides the feature double (he saddled the Prix Du Cap winner Cuvee Brut), Crawford also produced the exacta, with Sail South coming on
late for second, after having to check around Hard Day’s Night at a crucial point at the 250m marker. Sheer Trouble improved nicely and looked dangerous late in the race – he secured third a further 0,75 lengths behind, and shaded the pacy Milton who always runs an honest race. Night Trip never showed and ran 7,75 lengths downfield. Big Cat races in the Badge Boys silks and was bred by Maine Chance Farms. He is a son of Black Minnaloushe, out of the two-time winning Fort Wood mare, Blue Heather. He was bought by Stan Elley for R600 000 on the 2011 Cape Premier Yearling Sale and took his stakes tally to R522 400 with 7 wins and 14 places from his 34 starts.
On The Right Road… Green Street Bloodstock
A Bumper Year It’s been close on a year since the Sporting Post last caught up with Green Street Bloodstock, the dynamic syndication and race management company managed by new WPRRA Director, Justin Vermaak.
that at its prime he had 25 horses.” Vermaaak added that he had told Bernard Fayd’herbe that he had wanted to double that and get to 50 horses in training under the Green Street banner. “It seemed a laughable pipe dream but in the last twelve months we have gone from 4 horses in training to the current number of 24, are thus halfway there! We have already added 3 yearlings to the stock list taking the total to 27 and we plan on being very active at the next few yearling sales, with the aim of securing another 15 or so yearlings this year.” The young racing expert said that they had been well supported by some owners who kept reinvesting. “That really helps and we thank them for that. Obviously we are always looking for new ownerS,” he said. Of the current 24 GSB horses in training, 19 are unraced two-year olds likely to start running soon.
“That could be our next major drive in terms of raising our profile and our next big PR push,” he confirmed.
Confidence In a game where talk is cheap and results count, Green Street Bloodstock have delivered. ”Our results have been great which has helped us instill confidence in people to buy new horses and to grow.” GSB have had a total of 32 runners, 5 have won and 23 of the runners have found the first 4 places. That is top 4 strike rate of 72% which is something they are obviously very proud of. “This means the horses are constantly earning which importantly means that our owners aren’t paying as much as they may do on a monthly basis as the horses are paying their way.” Selecting the right horses is at the core of the success of the business.
“The results are a testament obviously to how we pick them, especially considering the first few that have been flying the flag for us were relative cheapies. I look at most horses on the sales, then Bernard usually arrives before the sale after riding commitments and I show him a shortlist, from which we monitor what they go for in the ring and grab the ones we perceive as value.” He added that a very key factor to their good earning strike rate came from buying ready to run two-year olds in training. “It naturally helps when you can buy them off the track when they already showing some good work, and not blind like at the yearling sales, it also helps the owner get a quick return and not wait a year for horses to run, although I’ve noticed some prefer buying yearlings. I think between myself being at the track fairly regularly and Bernard working a lot
of horses, our “scouting network” for picking horses in training is quite good.”
Stock On the subject of available Stock he confirmed that they still have one more two-year old in training to get involved with this year. “He is a high quality Hard Spun colt (sire of Ertijaal) who has produced Gr1 winners globally, He is an Australian import and qualifies for the CTS Ready To Run bonuses and his work is very good, He is in training in KZN with Paul Lafferty and we couldn’t be happier with him- there are a few shares left,” he confirmed. GSB have two smart yearling fillies, one by Maine Chance sire Querari, who Justin believes is one of the next big stallions. “Querari’s freshman record backs it up and he is a horse close to my heart. This filly has been stamped by him down to her facial markings and we are hoping he has left some ability in her too! The other filly is the first Green Street Ladies Syndicate horse. She will be based in KZN and is almost sold out. We have had a huge response from ladies wanting to race together, so when this filly sells out we will probably have to grab another one for the ladies to race in the Cape or JHB! Her name is Oriah and she was bred at Mauritzfontein. It is difficult to get better than that!”

Anton Marcus keeps Cuvee Brut focussed as she draws clear to win the Gr3 Prix Du Cap
Vasco Gr3 PRIX DU CAP at Kenilworth last Saturday

The Count Dubois filly Cuvee Brut confirmed her bright promise with a resounding victory in the R250 000 Vasco Gr3 Prix Du Cap at Kenilworth on Saturday to bring the curtain down on the Cape Summer Of Champions season.
enilworth was humming with a happy summer’s day crowd, some out for the racing, most there for the prawns – and a good vibe prevailed on track, without the music – as so aptly summed up by trainer Andre Nel, after he had saddled Hoist The Sail to win the fourth. The Brett Crawford trained Cuvee Brut added to the festivities, proving a popular winner in the hands of visiting jockey Anton Marcus. Thirteen runners lined up in the very
competitive 1400m race, with Cuvee Brut hogging the limelight, after two excellent Gr2 sprint placings – and her first stakes win looked overdue. Marcus endured a fairly frustrating afternoon, with his five relatively fancied rides producing just the one winner – but he was at his clinical best on the Brett Crawford charge, who jumped from a two draw and looked relaxed in midfield. We were to learn after the race that Cuvee Brut was not keen to corner and was trying to run out in the straight, but Marcus really made it all look so easy.
After Acaciawood had led them for home, Grant Van Niekerk sent Come Fly With Me forward, with Cuvee Brut perfectly placed from her midfield position and starting her run down the centre. The Count Dubois filly came forward powerfully inside the 250m marker as the improved Petty Officer made a bold bid, with Flying Ice staying on powerfully late. At the post the 18-10 Cuvee Brut was full of running to score an easy win by 1,25 lengths in a time of 85,71 secs. KZN stakes winner Flying Ice flew late to grab second and deny the aspirations of
Petty Officer, who earned herself some small black-type with a gutsy effort. The winner’s stablemate Alexis was also one of the few that got going too late, but managed to secure fourth and was only 2,40 lengths behind. According to Marcus, Cuvee Brut should stay 1600m and that gives the Crawford team some nice options in advance of the KZN Champions Season. The 4yo, who races for her trainer’s wife Jill, and Mark Wright, will spend a few weeks on the farm before travelling up the coast to Summerveld in March. The Gary Player Stud-
bred Cuvee Brut is by Count Dubois out of the twotime winning Aristis mare, Lemonzest. She was acquired for a bargain R65 000 on the 2013 Emperors Palace National 2yo Sale and took her earning, with a paddock value boosting stakes victory, to R477 925. She has won 5 races with 4 places from 12 starts and looks to have plenty to come. This was the first leg of a winning feature double for Crawford, with Big Cat proving slightly less popular with the punting public when romping home two races later to win the Cape Mile.
CTS Gr3 CHAIRMAN’S CUP at Kenilworth last Saturday
I
An entertaining display of tactical race-riding, with the assistance of the Cape crawl, gave Joey Ramsden’s former KZN Champions Season Gr1 winner King Of Pain a deserved victory in the R250 000 Gr3 Chairman’s Cup run over 3200m at Kenilworth on Saturday.
t was a race that was won in the first 800m by top heavyweight Bernard Fayd’herbe, who turned in a big ride on his sponsor’s day – on an afternoon that produced one of the major surprise Saturday attendance turnouts, on the final day of the Cape Summer Of Champions – without the ‘doof, doof, doof’ of the rave music! The six horse field for the 3200m ‘marathon’ contest had always shouted ‘no pace here’, and with top staying conditioner Joey Ramsden saddling half the field, the Milnerton magician always appeared to hold the tactical upper hand. Nobody gives Fayd’herbe instructions when he rides ‘The King’, and the thinking man’s
jockey conceded afterwards that it was always his game plan to call the odds. “The last thing I wanted was Anton (Marcus) dictating on Coltrane in front. King Of Pain was breathing nicely and enjoying it out front. At the 400m he still had two gears left. It was a massive training feat by Joey (Ramsden) and his team. The only problem with this horse is that he thinks more than me in a race!” he laughed. And so things panned out beautifully – and there were more than fifty shades of King Of Pain’s last career win – a display of front-running tactics under the same jockey in the Gr1 Gold Challenge in June 2014. On Saturday King Of Pain
went to head the race from the jump with a selection of finely judged sectors, and mental surfing of the winds, that had his opponents gasping for air as he spun for home and went for the outside rail. With stablemate Coltrane looking dangerous momentarily at about the 300m, none of them had the toe to match the grey bomber, and it was left to the under sufferance Three Balloons to chase him home, 1,75 lengths adrift – shading Coltrane for second. King Of Pain went off a generous 8-1. Joey Ramsden’s solid mare Gallica Rose was always in no man’s land in the middle of a Sunday cruise, and she fizzled out late to run fourth. Corne Orffer stifled Zante for
Bernard Fayd’herbe greets the judge as King Of Pain slams his opposition to win the Chairman’s Cup much of the race at the rear, and that is where the daughter of Ideal World stayed. The winner’s time was 218,72 secs – Latin Groove’s (admittedly he carried 46kgs) decade old course record of 204,12 secs was thus never in danger. King Of Pain, who may now have opened up some new marathon horizons and career
options late in the game, has won 8 races with 11 places from 31 starts. To further illustrate the merit of this effort, it is worth bearing in mind that he was placed in the Gr2 Diadem Stakes run over 1200m earlier in the Cape summer. He took his stakes account to R1 862 616 on Saturday –
not bad for an R80 000 Vintage Sale graduate! He was bred by Arc En Ciel and is out of the Defensive Play mare Viva La Belle, who was placed in Australia and is a halfsister to Lady Of The Turf. At the time of his 2014 Gold Challenge victory, he was Greys Inn’s second Gr1 winner after Royal Bencher in the 2011 SA Derby.

Cape Summer Of Champions Raises The Bar
C
With new heroes, and a couple of villains, having been spawned along the way, the Cape Summer Of Champions season drew to a close on Saturday after a four month festival of high-class competition on the track in the one South African racing centre that offers literally everything.
ape racing has its problems and issues – of that there is no doubt. Winter racing is no fun. The training facilities are substandard. The field sizes are not up to scratch. Other than on the big days, Kenilworth resembles a ghost town. Many will be asking, where to from here? But at least we can savour the memories of summer racing at its prime and the Ideal World filly Smart Call’s runaway win in the J&B Met, Justin Snaith’s
massive world record eighttimer and the ‘working-class’ success in the CTS Million Dollar, must go down as the defining moments of a great season that produced winners aplenty. And after a programme shuffle, the innovative creation of the additional January ‘giant’ of the Investec Day Of Dreams deserves a mention. Leading UK commentator Richard Hoiles called both the Gr1 Investec Cape Derby and the Million Dollar on the day that saw CTS and banking giant Investec host invited guests.
Million Dollar Moments A terrific advert for racehorse ownership and a remarkable hometown victory for the working classes had the champagne corks popping at the inaugural running of the CTS Million Dollar on the Investec Day Of Dreams. What a race for anybody who feels that racing has become a rich man’s game, dominated by wealthy men in suits and big powerful yards with telephone number buying power. That sentiment was put to the sword by a small Milnerton-based operation, a low-key hardworking young apprentice jockey and a pair of ‘working class’ owners, who invested the best R180 000 they could ever dream of, when lashing out to buy a Trippi colt at the 2014 Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 2. Former jockey and a member of a famous Cape racing family, Glen Puller, who has been training since the late 80’s celebrated the biggest day of his racing career when saddling Illuminator, who won a cracker when flying up the wide outside under 23 year old apprentice Heavelon ‘Heavy’ Van Der Hoven.

rainer Alec Laird celebrated the blissful successful culmination of a stressful few weeks and the dawn of a likely new era in his own career, as he introduced a shining star to the horseracing world. An injury to regular jockey Weichong Marwing led to the Laird yard and Smart Call connections facing a week of tough decisions to find a suitable replacement rider. After negotiations fell flat with a trio of international riders, it was left to a 26 year old local lad JP van der Merwe to make a name for himself – and he did it in style. Trainer Alec Laird saddled international superstar London News to win the Met in 1997, and having another potential globetrotter on his hands must be music to the ears of the veteran horseman.

daughter of Kingmambo stallion Ideal World to Alec Laird’s yard. And the tale reached a peak on that memorable Saturday in January. Smart Call left Sean Tarry’s race favourite Legal Eagle for dead, as she drew off and won going away by 3,50 length in a time of 123,17 secs to join an illustrious modern era honour roll of female winners of this great race, that includes the likes of Igugu, River Jetez, Imperious Sue, Empress Club, Olympic Duel, and a half century back to Renounce. A classic Mauritzfontein product, Smart Call is a daughter of Ideal World out of the 1999 Met winner Horse Chestnut’s unraced daughter, Good Judgement – a half-sister to Vodacom Durban July winner, Greys Inn, who sired runner-up Legal Eagle. Smart Call will further her career on the global stage.
Y
Pinnacle Of The Season THERE were suggestions that Met Day should be renamed Snaith Day in honour of Justin Snaith’s extraordinary achievement – believed to be a world record – of saddling eight winners. Snaith’s elation at his phenomenal achievement was obviously tempered just a little by not winning either of the two big Grade 1 races on the day, the Met itself and the Cape Flying Championship. After the last race, Snaith said he’d swap the “Amazing 8” for a win in the Met, which his family has never achieved. “I’ve got to get it right and win the Met!” he exclaimed. “But I’ll take this as a good second prize.” Eight wins in 12 races – including the first six in a row – gave Snaith Racing an unbelievable J&B Met Day. Pundits at Kenilworth
Racecourse could not call to mind any stable having eight winners at one meeting, or the first six on a programme – and certainly no-one has done it at such a prestigious race day. In fact, racing fundis couldn’t recall such a feat anywhere in the world . Four of the eight were ridden by multiple South African champion jockey Piere “Striker” Strydom and two by Bernard Fayd’Herbe.
Master
Snaith led in Fire Master (9-2, Strydom) after the running of the curtain-raiser – and even the ebullient, confident young man could not have imagined he’d come to ‘own’ the winner’s circle by the time the two Grade 1 contests rolled around several hours later.
The second race went to Star Express, the 7-10 favourite under Strydom; the third to Acaciawood (141, Fayd’Herbe; the fourth to Sergeant Hardy (13-2, S’Manga Khumalo); the fifth to Qing (2-1, Strydom) and the sixth to Captain Swarovski (4-1, Strydom). Snaith, who saddled 34 runners on the day – “If they’ve got four legs and can run, they’re running,” he’d said earlier in the week – appeared at a loss for words as the winners piled up. “It’s just great,” he said, before showering praise on his staff, who worked tirelessly through the festive season to get the string into top form. Snaith had two candidates in Race 7, the Grade 1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship, but neither managed to make the frame.
No Whip
But he was back in the No 1 enclosure after Race 9 when Fayd’Herbe steered Ovidio (8-1) home in the Grade 2 J&B Stayers – despite experiencing an awkward start and dropping his crop at the 2800m jump. It was appropriate that the man who’d dominated proceedings so comprehensively should cap his momentous day with a win in the final race of the day. ‘Million Dollar Man’ apprentive Heavelon van der Hoven picked up the chance ride on hot-pot favourite Baritone – as he had done a week earlier on Illuminator. The youngster handled the pressure well and produced his charge at the right time to claim an easy win and make it No 8. Extraordinary stuff!
Sunbur & Fairytale
THE biggest shock of the Cape Summer Of Champions , some even called it a fairytale, unfolded when the Gavin Van Zyl-trained KZN raider Budapest scorched to a win in the R2,5 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes. While pundits were scrambling to find out who the gelding’s sire Lithuanian was, a vindicated few celebrated triumphantly in various parts of the world and their overriding thought was, “Yes indeed, he does have gears!” The vindicated included ebullient owner Brian “Buffalo Bill” Burnard, trainers Gavin and Gareth Van
Zyl, Budapest’s sales consigner Spencer Cook, Breeder Johan Loftus of Witzenberg Stud, Bernard Kantor, who owns Lithuanian, and Jannie Meyer, who stands Lithuanian at his Rietvlei Stud in Mossel Bay. Spencer Cook began planning a pin-hooking strategy for the CTS Ready To Run Sale three years back. He was loathe to put himself under pressure by spending big money at the yearling sales, so scoured the Cape looking for “precocious colts” to purchase off the farms. He had identified the sire Great Britain as a precocious
sire, so visited Witzenberg Stud who had a few by him. He failed to find any suitable Great Britains, but “Lofty” then whispered, “I do have this one very nice specimen, but unfortunately he is by Lithuanian.” Cook recalled, “I liked him from the second I saw him.” He had to have him and forked out R30,000 for the youngster. Cook broke Budapest in and was also the only person to ride him in the lead up to the sales. The colt impressed him from the beginning and then came the unforgettable morning when he decided to “sprint him up”. “I realised this horse had proper
gears and he had an overdrive gear too.” Cook was so excited he jumped off the horse, ran to his office and immediately dialled bloodstock agent John Freeman, asking him to pass on the message to Bernard Kantor in London that he had found a Lithuanian that was “very, very good”. Cook sold the horse and recalled one of his breeding friends asking him how he could sell a Lithuanian for that price and not feel guilty. His serious response to the quip was that “R160 000 for a champion was cheap”. There’s hope for all of us!

My recent internet meanderings led me to a quote that I found intriguing and it read “What makes something better is connection.”
Sometimes you chase a story and sometimes a story chases you and horses seem to work the same way.
The dictionary definitions for connection include to join, link, or fasten together; unite or bind. Connection is what helps us make sense of something, helps us form an opinion about something and what keeps us interested or, well, connected to something. Making a connection is also an act of reaching out.
There’s an expression that you may not always end up with the horse you want, but you usually end up with the one you need. Zenyatta was one of those horses for me. Of course, with Zenyatta fever in full swing she was pretty hard to ignore, but there were plenty of other horses who got lots of press who never hit home the way she did.
And once you’ve made a connection, you are no longer alone – there are now two of you. Two heads are better than one and usually mean double the energy and double the fun and soon you have 4, then 8, then 16 and well, you get the picture.
C
onnections are important because they define us and tell us where we are in relation to the rest of the world. Or to borrow another quote, “We know who we are and we define what we are by references to the people we love and our reasons for loving them” – Gregory David Roberts. Lastly, our connections define what we do and Mahatma Gandhi opined that “Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.” While I’m not all that sure about the beliefs and the destiny bit, what I do know is whenever I open my mouth, horses seem to come out. Allow me to demonstrate.
Spreading the word I recently had occasion to visit a physio for some therapy and as it was a new referral and the first time we met, she asked what I do for a living. Telling someone you work in horse racing is usually a conversation stopper – they’re either anti-racing, anti-gambling or happy to find something else
to be anti about, but my new friend soldiered intrepidly on. Alighting on her only racing reference, she enquired about the Met. Well, you can just about imagine how that went! However, after the worst of the initial explosion dissipated, I started explaining the reasons for my ire, followed by what had transpired on the day and how and why events had affected people: the filly’s marvellous win, the story of Horse Chestnut and how he was connected, the young jockey and the chance ride and his first Grade 1 win. Alec Laird and London News, export and setting a new QEII record; the Million Dollar apprentice who pulled the rabbit out of the hat and delivered the Snaith’s Super 8. And by the end of our session she said ‘I usually ask people to be quiet while I’m treating them, but that was really interesting!’ And it’s incredible how often I get that reaction when I start telling people about racing. Small gratuitous chest puff aside, I like finding stories and enjoy the opportunity to share them via this page and any other opportunity
I get, but while compliments are always welcome and I’d love to take credit for being the world’s best story teller, what constantly amazes me is that these are not MY stories. These are racing’s stories. They are OUR stories. They make sense of who we are, how we got here and why we do what we do. And they ARE interesting. And they’re out there, bristling with colour and character and CONNECTIONS just waiting to reach out and grab someone. And the reason I care about them so much is because this stuff is AMAZING! And everyone wants to be connected to things that are amazing. People gather around amazing things and they connect to it and to each other. They add to it and make it bigger and spread it around even further. So as usual, I’m left asking the question why we ignore all this amazing stuff when we have so much of it at our disposal?
Connections everywhere The reason for asking the question (again) is that it’s been an interesting couple of weeks for connections – making them and receiving them and, particularly after my therapist and her new found racing knowledge, I got to wondering ( a g a i n ) why racing doesn’t use the idea a bit more often. As if to drive the point home, shortly after finding my little quote, one of my favourite internet haunts ran an obituary for a US exercise rider named Steve Willard, who recently passed away aged 72. I’ve never met Mr Willard, but he was the regular exercise rider for Zenyatta during her racing campaign.
When she lost the Breeders Cup Classic back in 2010, I wrote “We all dream of owning a ‘big’ horse, knowing we would be lucky simply to witness such a horse once in a lifetime, nevermind owning one. But in the end it doesn’t really matter – through their kindness, the Mosses and Shirreffs have shared Zenyatta with all of us. And somehow, simply by watching her run and loving this great horse, I too have become a small part of her story. And I humbly take my place next to all the other crazies by feeling that in some way, there is a tiny part of her that will always be mine.” I have often said that horses are great connectors and even before my Sporting Post days, the simple virtue of having a horse – or even an interest in horses – was enough to start conversations with all sorts of people in all sorts of places. It’s like a key to the universe and my conversations and connections now wind a million silken threads to a million different destinations. With the entire world connected by fibre optic cable, thanks to the magic of an internet connection and the world wide web, the world is literally at your fingertips.
Six degrees of separation Of course, the trouble with having the world at your fingertips is that the world is literally at your fingertips, which has its ups and downs. According to Stephen Fry’s recent rant about Twitter, it “is frothy with scum, clogged with weeds and littered with broken glass, sharp rocks and slimy rubbish. If you don’t watch yourself, with every move you’ll end up being gashed, broken, bruised or contused. Even if you negotiate the sharp rocks you’ll soon feel that too many people have peed in the pool for you to want to swim there any more. The fun is over.” Thanks to the six degrees of separation, like images in your rear view mirror, connections are now closer than they look.
Which is great when they are connections you want, but slightly less so when they are of the ‘peed in the pool’ variety. But faint heart and all that. I regularly trawl the internet in its various guises for stories, inspiration and interesting people to chat to. ‘Interesting’ varies from the dictionary definition of the word to the ‘may you live in interesting times’ version, but while I do find a lot of the viewpoints bemusing, there is room for us all under the sun and, so it seems, on the internet. The best part is that you can have as many connections as you like. They’re free! There are all these fun, but rather silly internet polls about which is your favourite horse, who do you like for the Dubai Carnival, who do you think will feature in the Triple Crown trail – why pick one? Double your fun and pick two, or three, or the whole lot for that matter. See where it takes you. Just last week, I read a horsey column online, emailed the author to say I’d enjoyed his work, and he emailed me right back to say thank you. I spent my entire high school career with a girl that I hardly ever spoke to fast forward a few years and it turns out that we both love horses and Thoroughbreds in particular and just like that, there’s a connection. And who knows where that might lead to. That’s magic. And that’s what horses do.
Making waves We throw stones in a pond and sometimes have no idea how far those ripples go. And that is true. When that big black mare galloped into my life she left her big, heavy hoof prints all over my heart. And I wasn’t the only one. Zenyatta collected people, she brought them together and she connected people. That was her magic. And incredibly, after her racing career was over, her fans have kept that connection going. What I’d forgotten is that those connections run both ways. I was mulling over the loss of Mr Willard, the vagaries of the internet and the world in general, when up popped a notice that her colt Ziconic was due to debut on Saturday, 20 February and here I sat, all these years later, with Zenyatta tugging on the end of the line. And she was tugging hard.
Next generation Thanks to the internet elves that keep the digital world ticking over, I knew
that Zenyatta had retired to stud at Lane’s End Farm and on 8 March 2012 produced her first foal – a gloriously handsome dark bay colt by Bernardini - who went on to be named Cozmic One. On 1 April 2013 (her 9th birthday as it happens), her match to Tapit produced a chestnut colt named Ziconic and on 20 April 2014, Zenyatta produced a little mirror image of herself in a little War Front filly that would be named Z Princess. I joined the legions of fans in mourning when Z Princess had a paddock accident in October that year and had to be put down. So when Cozmic One made his track debut for John Sherriffs in April 2015, it created new hope and legions of fans trekked to Santa Anita to watch him run. He looked the part and seemed to follow in his dam’s footsteps, loafing 10 lengths back, but unlike Zenyatta, there was no finishing kick and he cantered across the line 8.5 lengths last in a six horse field. His second start wasn’t much better, prompting comments such as ‘never posed a threat’ and he finished 7th in an 8 horse field on 8 July. While he’s posting good work times, he seems a bit of a tearaway. US journos generously refer to him as having ‘pent up brilliance’. Reading between the lines, I suspect it may be interpreted as ‘temperament’ as he seems something of a difficult character to manage. We all heaved a collective sigh. After the loss of Z Princess it seemed too much to bear. Then along came Ziconic. Unlike his brother, he’s been a model student, graduating unremarkably through the training ranks until he reached his 7 furlong Santa Anita debut last Saturday with Gary Stevens in the irons. He broke slowly and seemed content to loaf at the back. Stevens noted, “I was at the three-eighths pole and was so far back I said, ‘Buddy, your momma could win from here, do it.’” Ziconic almost did, rallying to finish third, 1 ¾ lengths off the winner. Stevens added, “I’ve never been cheered when I got third in a maiden special weight before, but the whole day has been fun. It’s an honor to get to ride him. John (Sherriffs) had a big smile on his face when I came back. He’s a man of few words, but that smile said it all.” So I’m hereby throwing another stone in the pond. I have a feeling we’re going adventuring again.

STRAIGHT TALKER There will be plenty of interest added as 2014 USA Horse Of The Year California Chrome looks likely to run in a 2000m handicap at Meydan this coming Thursday. It will be his first start in Dubai this year and serve as his prep for the $10 million Gr1 Dubai World Cup to be run on 26 March. – in which race California Chrome was runner up to Prince Bishop last year.
PRIME STAKES A million pounds will be on offer this year for the QIPCO 1000 Guineas and QIPCO 2000 Guineas – the initial two legs in the QIPCO British Champions Series - will each be worth
Bolan Var Doin I
A pair of Var daughters, both bred by the Boland Stud, caught the eye over the weekend. Cup Cake won the Breeders Guineas Plate over 1400m at Fairview on Friday. The filly, who was a R350 000 buy at the 2014 National Yearling Sale, has now won or placed in all eight of her career outings. Second of the Var/Boland Stud bred fillies to win was the speedy Miss Varlicious who scored her fifth win over 1200m at Greyville on Sunday. She is bred on the same cross as sprint star Via Africa.
£500,000. This represents a £50,000 (or 11 %) rise on last year’s value for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and a massive £90,000 (or 22 per %) increase for the QIPCO 1000 Guineas.
Tiger On Top The Alchemy’s resident sire Where’s That Tiger got on the winners board in Singapore on Sunday when his son Singsurat picked up the Kranji Stakes. A four-year-old gelding, Singsurat was making it win number four, when running on strongly to land the 1800m contest at Kranji –and provided apprentice Mohd Firdaus with one leg of a hatrick.
In less than three years, Joao Moreira is already chasing his own extraordinary riding records in Hong Kong and now his countryman Silvestre de Sousa has delivered one of the more memorable short-term stints of recent times - a standard day at Sha Tin has quickly become Brazil versus the world. Is it some sort of special South American style or physical trait that makes them better suited to life in the saddle? In fact, both sum it up in one word – ‘hunger’.
The Peter Gelagotis-trained Mourinho was allowed to run in the CF Orr Stakes despite being kicked behind the barriers before the Caulfield event but the post-race comments by racing manager Manny Gelagotis will see him appear before the stewards this week.”Integrity is about all facets of racing and the Mourinho scratching lacked integrity from all angles in our mind,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting to the hearing to hear what concerns the Stewards have with my commentary of the dissatisfaction of their roles on race day which led Mourinho to be allowed to run when kicked.”
Extravagance
Star New Zealand colt Xtravagant is set to pass up the Sydney autumn carnival in favour of an historic assault on Royal Ascot in June. Sydney’s loss will be the Royal meeting’s gain as the outstanding 3yo would become the first New Zealand-trained horse to race at Royal Ascot since the world famous carnival started attracting horses from the southern hemisphere more than a decade ago.
IN THE WARS
Jockey Ian ‘Fish’ Sturgeon rode a career first-time four winners at the Vaal last Thursday and is hoping that this is the next step towards getting better rides – the key to riding more winners. He indicated that his riding has improved since his move to Gauteng and he is assisted by jockey agent Bradley McHardy. Sturgeon is lying in 12th place on the log with 51 winners.
It is good to hear that Mick Goss is out of hospital and back on his feet again after falling ill while away at the Asian Racing Conference. Dave Mollett has also been discharged after his knee replacement surgery, while another scribe in Andrew Harrison goes in for his knees on Wednesday. What is it about these racing journos and knees? Too much grovelling – or maybe it’s the pub crawling…
Punters Not Chicken But Who is Bantam? Should the racing operators not be introducing new name trainers and jockeys to the media, prior to the punting public opening a racecard and seeing the name? A few weeks ago trainer D Devos appeared and on Saturday we found a trainer S Naidoo in the first at Turffontein. Then there is this young apprentice Bantam – whose name is nowhere to be found on the list of race-riding appies on the SAJA website.
SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 26th - SUNDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2016
13 LIESL KING
National Horseracing Authority of South Africa Acting Chief Executive Colin Hall has reacted strongly to a comment made on an editorial announcing the appointment of Mr Andy O’Connor as Chairman of the NHA, during March 2015. “I find the comment so absurd on a number of levels that I am compelled to reply,” wrote Hall in response to our submission to his office of the comment made on 17 February 2016 by Sarah Ann dos Santos. The original editorial is eleven months old. The comment stated: Can someone please explain to me, why one of the biggest punters is the chairman of the National Horseracing Authority? The National Horseracing is the integrity of Horseracing surely this was not suppose to be allowed, its a huge conflict of interest, he is a punter, breeder, owner and now THE CHAIRMAN?? No ways Hall clarified that the Chairman was elected to the National Board by the members
of The National Horseracing Authority (NHA). “With a minor exception, all members are either owners or breeders, or both. A Director of the NHA must be elected from the membership so it follows that the Chairman, who is elected by the Directors, will be an owner, breeder or both. To suggest that this is a conflict of interest is nonsensical.” He went on to say that the second point that he had an issue with is that the statement seemed to suggest that there was something illicit or immoral with a person placing a bet on horseracing. “Many highly respected people place bets on horseracing and I am sure that they would be seriously offended by the suggestion
that this would make them unsuitable to hold office. The suggestion that there is a relationship between betting on horseracing and integrity must be rejected outright.” He said that, most, if not all, previous Chairmen of the NHA bet on horseracing to a greater or lesser degree. “It therefore appears that this comment is a personal attack.” Hall closed by stating that horseracing should not be concerned about hardworking people who give their time and expertise in an effort to better the horseracing industry for all of us. “It should be concerned about those people who do nothing except to criticise the industry, often without the courage to even provide their names.”
Gambling On Change I find the Hall reply very interesting, as it perfectly mirrors the change of power within the NHA board. In the days when the lawyers held sway in voting terms, Robert Bloomberg was seen as a lessor candidate to WittsHewitson for the position of Chairman.
The reason for this was apparently due to the Ringer being perceived to be a man who liked to gamble. History has shown that Witts was supported and elected as Chairman. Now let it be known that I am no Bloomberg fan. The knives in my back bear testament to this. Personal feelings aside, I have to
acknowledge his experience and talent with regards to racing. I wonder if the NHA would be in the embarrassing position that it currently finds itself in, if more racing men like Bloomberg were on the board. Steve Reid via www.sportingpost.co.za comments
History The Teacher I am interested in the comment - “The suggestion that there is a relationship between betting on horseracing and integrity must be rejected outright”
Acceptance of that would require amendment of a number of NHA rules insofar as they apply to stakeholders,as suggested by barnesgbarnes! However, history shows that
Now I Know! Inasmuch as Mr Hall finds “the comment so absurd on a number of levels that” he is “compelled to reply”, can I expect that every time an absurd comment is made regarding the NHA on a public forum, there will be a reply from the NHA? I disagree that what Ms dos Santos stated and asked is absurd. Has anyone noticed that Ms dos Santos has not replied to the NHA’s response? I can understand why. The brutal and unfair response by the the NHA should have been tempered. In my view, the unfortunate conclusion that is drawn that Ms dos Santos has made a personal attack on Mr O’Connor has no merit. This statement, in my opinion, is absurd. The vast majority of people involved in horseracing are not
members of the NHA. Likewise the majority of people involved in horseracing do not know the provisions of the NHA constitution and its Rules. Moreover, outsiders have little to no knowledge of the Rules. In my view, it is absurd for someone to think that the NHA Chairman should not be the chairman because of his involvement in horseracing on so many levels. The only reason why Mr O’Connor and anyone else who is eligible to run for Chairman (or director) can do so, is because the NHA Constitution
or Letters can be faxed dema: eMailed to Karel Mie spost@iafrica.com Fax: (021) 761 4003 used, Pseudonyms may be e and provided the full nam are address of the sender supplied to the editor.

and the Rules allow it. Stipendiary Stewards cannot own and gamble etc, so there is nothing wrong with the thinking of Ms Dos Santos or anyone else by comparing Stipes with the Chairman (if she did do so). The NHA could have provided a better and more informative response. I know that the next time I address an issue about the NHA or horseracing on a public forum, I need to be absurd to get a response. Ertijaal will revert to turf and will be pointed at the Gr1 Jebel Hatta over 1800m on Meydan’s Super Saturday, 5 March.
he four-year-old colt faded right out of his first dirt handicap, a 1900 contest at Meydan last Thursday, not living up to expectations, but Mike de Kock summed it up: “This was a test for Ertijaal and he didn’t act on dirt. Simple as that. We’ll go back to the turf in the Jebel Hatta and you will see a different result.” The evening didn’t produce any winners for Blue Stables and Mike reviewed the runs of the yard’s other representatives saddled at the
meeting. Mastermind was run out of it over the last 100m of a handicap over 1400m on turf, getting third and Mike commented: “He did it the hard way, he was too keen and towing. He ran well again under a big weight and if he can relax in a race he can win again.” Prayer For Relief, third in a dirt handicap over a mile, produced a very similar run to his start on 7 January. The eight-year-old started grinding with 150m to go, made up ground fast and failed by under a length to overhaul the winner, in this case the decent Maftool.
“Prayer For Relief ran another honest race, he would arguably have won in a few more strides. He’s won a number of races over 1700m, that seems to be his preference.” Sanshaawes and Tellina both had a say in the finish of the Gr3 Dubai Millennium Stakes and were respectively beaten 3.25 (fourth) and 4.5-lengths (seventh), by Tryster. “Both horses were well and gave of their best, but they’re older runners now and it’s getting hard to compete at Group level, they will do better in handicaps.”

First Hong Kong Treble
Schofield On A Roll
I
A late pick-up ride gave jockey Chad Schofield the final piece of his first Hong Kong treble at Sha Tin on Sunday as he set about making up for the time he has lost this season through suspension, and his Yan Oi Tong Cup win had an extra piquancy.
came knowing I had some good rides but you never take the results for granted in this place - one win from a good book is hard enough so three is a really good day,” Schofield said. “I missed a lot of December with suspension and that really slowed my momentum. But I’ve had a few winners lately now and hopefully that will open more doors in the coming weeks.” He landed wins for three different yards, finishing off with Benno Yung Tin-pang-trained Happy Place in the last after winning the third race with G-One Leader for Dennis Yip Chor-hong, and no doubt got an extra thrill out of Ambitious Champion’s win sandwiched in between for Richard Gibson. Schofield has been the regular rider of Victory Magic (Douglas Whyte) until his previous start and it was Ambitious Champion who was there to mow down that horse on the line yesterday after the John Moore-trained four-year-old looked to have the race shot to pieces. “He was home at the 200m but by the 100m, Dougie was calling Uber,” said Moore, who added that Derby plans are still on for Victory Magic. Schofield too was resigned to a Victory Magic win halfway up the straight but kept working at Ambitious Champion, who wore him down late. “My horse was quite dour and with every stride he was picking up a little and Victory Magic was coming back to him a little,” he said. “There wasn’t much in it but the stable has a good opinion of Ambitious Champion so I’m sure it won’t be his last win.” Chad Schofield was all smiles after partnering pick-up ride Happy Place to a victory in the last. Happy Place was a pick-up for the young Australian after local rider Keith Yeung Ming-lun was forced to relinquish his rides for the second successive meeting due to facial injuries suffered in a track accident before the trials last Tuesday. “Happy Place is quite field-shy and had won
Ambitious Champion beats Victory Magic impressively two runs ago when he was able to relax, then come out into plenty of room to finish off,” said Schofield. “Since then, he was cluttered up and didn’t get the same room so Benno asked me to try to replicate his winning ride and I thought he was pretty good. His acceleration caught me by surprise and I got there too quickly and he had a good look around when he hit the front.” G-One Leader was the first of Chad Schofield’s wins, triumphing in a busy finish that resulted in an unsuccessful protest from Silvestre de Sousa on Bold Stitch. G-One Leader is an infrequent winner and not the easiest of rides but Schofield said the light handicap suited the gelding. “There’s not much of him and he doesn’t give you a lot of help in the run. Considering he got a bump off Triumphant Light, he didn’t do a bad job,” the jockey said. “But it was a big help to him, the light weight and getting 16 pounds off the second horse.” Schofield even went within a nose of four wins on the day when G-One Leader’s stablemate, Travel First, was touched off in the final stride of race nine. www.scmp.com

scot Stud is the new home for US-bred stallion Global View, a graded stakes winner on turf in his home country. Global View won twice from 3 starts as a juvenile, including the G3 Generous Stakes, over a mile on turf. That effort earned him the second highest turf rating for 2yo colts in the US Experimental Handicap. At 3 he scored a win in the G2 American Turf Stakes over 1700m, and ran 2nd in the Listed Penn Mile over 1600m on turf. His best subsequent
effort was a 4th place in the $500k G1 Secretariat Stakes, over 2000m on turf. Global View, who was a $500.000 yearling at Keeneland in 2012, is a son of world-leading sire and sire-of-sires Galileo. His dam Egyptian Queen is an unraced half sister to G1 placed G2 winner A.P. Warrior. She is by Storm Cat, whose sire Storm Bird is a 3-part brother to Ocean’s Answer, the third dam of Egyptian Queen. This is a solid Gr1 producing turf family. Global View, who was acquired in October last

Bernard Fayd’Herbe, who rode his first British winner when the ex-Joey Ramsden-trained Cold As Ice won at Chelmsford four days before Christmas, will return to partner her in the Fillies & Mares Final at Lingfield on Good Friday, writes Michael Clower.
art-owner Brian Finch, who will also fly out for the meeting, said: “William Haggas is now very excited about Cold As Ice. That last run added a new dimension to her in his eyes.” The Choice Carriers, Sceptre and Laisserfaire winner flew home to take third in a 1200m Listed race at Lingfield early this month and, according to a report in The Irish Field, only one horse has covered the final two furlongs faster at Lingfield since the introduction of sectional timing. The report, dealing with her chance at Easter, was headed ‘Cold As Ice A Certainty’. The 4yo Cold As Ice was purchased on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 for R875 000 and races in a partnership of Kathy Finch and Belinda Kieswetter. The star filly was bred by top Cape breeders Avontuur and is by the ill-fated Western Winter out of the lightning fast seven time winning National Assembly mare, Viva (National Assembly x Hot Grass). www.goldcircle.co.za – additional by SP Editorial Staff

The St John Gray bred, trained and raced Call To Combat got his stud career off to a great start with a winner last Friday.
he Julie Dittmer trained three year old Commandtoconquer won by almost a length over 1600m at Greyville on Friday evening. The colt had finished close twice before and also ran fifth from a handful of starts. Commandtoconquer is out of All Fired Up mare Silent Heat, and owned by Mr MD Brown and Mrs CRA Kingham. The third dam is Aquasarto, the dam of amongst others Argonaut, Simply Salmon and Marine Sands. Call To Combat, a son of Announce out of Rakeen mare Gamaliya, is in turn out of a Flirting Around/Janus mare and had 22 starts at the track to win seven times and earn seven places. His wins included the Listed Wolf Power over 1600m, as well as the placing in the Gr2 Victory Moon Stakes and Listed Drum Star Handicap. With only six runners to race to date, eight of them have placed collectively. Call To Combat stands alongside his sire Announce at Hadlow Stud for owner St John Gray. Call To Combat’s service fee was R15 000 for the 2015 season.

ran those horses down.” He added: “To mow those super horses down, that was one hell of an effort.” Bred by the Throsby family, who raced his dam Lovely Jubly, Chautauqua was passed in for $300,000 at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and was retained to race by his breeders in partnership with prominent owner Rupert Legh, whose blue and gold lightning bolt silks Chautauqua carried to victory. Chautauqua is the second stakes winner from Gr1 QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes & Gr1 QTC TJ Smith Classic winner Lovely Jubly, who has also produced Gr3 SAJC Breeders’ Stakes winning filly London Lol. www.breeding & racing.com
Freeman explained that the plan is to send Legislate to Durban for another attempt at Gr1 glory in either or both of two Gr1 WFA events there. John Freeman says he has never seen two horses who have been featured on the cover of more publications and been used in as many industry adverts and features as Futura and Legislate. His team are compiling a coffee table picture book of the many newspaper clippings, magazine covers and dozens of pictures that have been published as well as some of the incredible pictures recently taken by star equine-photographer Tracy Robertson. In over 50 press cuttings and cover stories, racing scribes have heaped praise on both of these Champion racehorses’ looks and racing class. CNN recently spent two days filming them for a soon to be released international feature on SA horseracing. Superlatives are the norm in the accolades that have been heaped on these two champions.
Impressive Futura and Legislate are so similar in so many ways: both sons of super-sire Dynasty. Both won 4 Gr1 races. Futura won 3 Equus Awards and Legislate won 4 Equus Awards – both were crowned Horse Of The Year and both broke track records. Futura set a new track record in the first of his two wins in the Gr1 Champions Cup and Legislate set a new track record in the Gr2 Green Point Stakes. Dynasty and his sire Fort Wood are two of only three sires in history ever to produce three Horses Of The Year. Dynasty is also the only sire ever to be voted Equus Outstanding sire 3 times. At August 2015 Dynasty and his progeny had amassed 15 Equus Awards. Freeman explained that there are many pedigree similarities between the two Champions. He said that the best part about their pedigrees and physical prowess is that there are so many mares in the SA stud book that suit them both. With a track record of over 40 years in the thoroughbred industry, John Freeman said that he has learnt that sires are more likely to reproduce their own racing class and that of their sire-line. He said that these two exciting young sires are as good as it gets – real class in looks and performance and make a valuable addition to the South African stallion ranks.
Youth As head of Freeman Stallions, John regularly analyses the sire rankings and their availability. He said that there has never been a more opportune time for young sires to ply their trade. Karl Neisius
Life After The Saddle When Pat Eddery died in late 2015, Brough Scott, in his tremendous tribute to the great rider, wrote “A top jockey’s life will always have something of the portrait of Dorian Gray about it. Whilst he is riding, he is ever young. When he finally dismounts, there is a very old picture to come out of the cupboard.” Fifty-Eight is hardly old, but it is a very good age for a jockey and it is the age that “King Karl” Neisius retired his racing saddle in November 2015. We catch up with him to find out how retired life is treating him.
Jockeys spend their lives watching what they eat and there is a particular tension in the heavy weight jockeys. It’s something one becomes so accustomed to that you stop noticing it until it’s not there anymore. Catching up with Karl three months into retirement, it’s gratifying to find him relaxed and at ease and when the waitress brings over 2 cappuccinos and complimentary biscuits, he accepts with a warm smile.
About Karl Karl Walter Neisius was born on 27th January 1957 in the Welsh town of Carmarthen. His family moved to South Africa in 1964 and settled in the Cape Town suburb of Ottery. Being the son of a riding instructor, Karl had horses in his blood and joined the SA Jockey Academy in July 1971. He was among the last intake to start at Mariaanhill
and moved with them to the new Summerveld facility.
Being a jockey Karl was indentured to family friend, Ralph Rixon in Cape Town for whom he rode his first winner aboard Glad Rag Doll in March 1973. After qualifying, Karl rode for Rixon in KZN for 3 months, but came back to Cape Town, riding mainly for Terrance Millard before going freelance. After an injuryplagued 1978/79 season, he took up with the Snaith and Elley yards and never looked back. His career has spanned more than 4 decades and it’s been one of consistency and reliability. He tallied 100+ winners on 12 occasions, was Champion WC Jockey 10 times and rode 5 winners on a card on no less than 7 occasions. He notched his 3,000th career winner aboard Cape Royal on 9 April 2012. His winners are landmarks in our
racing history - Jamaican Music, Festive Season, Home Streaker, Lord Randolph, Flaming Rock, Eli’s Truth, Midnight Run, Flobayou, Dynasty, Free My Heart, River Jetez, Blue Tiger, Fort Vogue, Noordhoek Flyer, What A Winter, Capetown Noir. It’s quite a CV.
Retirement Karl was last seen in the saddle on 12 October 2015, when he rode a full card of 8 rides at Durbanville for 1 win, a second and two thirds. His last ride was on board Avail for the Dean Kannemeyer yard and he finished 0.9 lengths third. After battling on-going back problems, Karl officially announced his retirement on 9 November 2015 at the age of 58. Asked what prompted his decision to retire, he explains that he was boarded for medical reasons due to osteoporosis in his lower back, namely the L3, 4 and 5 vertebrae. “Riding professionally is hard on your back. You’ll probably find that about 50% of riders have back problems to some degree. Some of it is lifestyle and some of it is hereditary. Injuries and falls exacerbate it, but it’s part of the job and most of us manage it to an extent. It’s what we’re conditioned to do. I’ve been riding a little longer than average, so most of mine is wear and tear. I still had a few goals, so I’ve been hanging on for the last few years - I was still hoping to win the Met and I’d hoped to ride 2000 winners at Kenilworth. I’d have been happy to try and manage it a bit longer, but I’ve been seeing all the specialists for the past two years and it just got to the stage that I couldn’t manage it anymore.” Was he tempted to have a go at equalling Stanley Amos’ record (he retired on 3 July 1983, three months shy of his 65th birthday)? Karl laughs, “No-one knows how old Stan Amos really was! Plus he only rode
work occasionally and was only riding 1 or 2 a day towards the end. I was still riding full cards and things were much more intense,” he says with a hint of pride.
“When I do something I want to do it properly. I want to ride 5 – 6 rides a day as well as riding work, but it got to the stage where I couldn’t do that without medication practically every day. I knew it couldn’t carry on indefinitely, so I was preparing myself, but you ride a winner and you think you’re still invincible and that the next champion will be around the corner, you know?” Then “You have to draw a line somewhere,” he smiles ruefully.
What’s he been doing since? “Apart from seeing millions of doctors, I’ve basically been relaxing and trying to get my mind around the whole thing. Luckily I’m well covered in terms of insurance and will get an income replacer for a few years, so basically I’m taking a nice break. I’m spending more time with my youngest daughter and being able to go away for weekends is wonderful. I’m going to miss race riding and the guys in the jockey room. I think the Cape jockey room has got a special camaraderie compared to rest of the country – they’re all special guys – but I guess life goes on.”
On being a jockey “I’ve loved it, but it’s a rollercoaster – you’re can be on top one week and not have a job the next – that’s just racing. It’s a very insecure lifestyle, but you’ve just got to get used to it. We were all battling apprentices at one stage, but in my day, if you had a nice boss, he gave you chances, especially when you were claiming and if you got an opportunity you got to run with it. I was very fortunate and always had long relationships with the trainers I rode for. When I stopped riding for someone, I always moved on to a better job – I was very fortunate in that respect.” “We all make mistakes at every meeting. You just try and keep the mistakes to a minimum and good jockeys make less mistakes than others. I’ve always ridden a certain way - I know a lot of people think I’m not vigorous enough, but I feel if horse is balanced, it’s giving its best. I’ve had a fair amount of criticism, but you learn to deal with it. I’ve spent most of my career riding for top yards, and obviously they’re happy or they wouldn’t employ me. I’m very happy to be judged by people I ride for and the jockeys I ride against, rather than ones in the grandstand! ”
Career Highlights “The Queen’s Plate, the July, all the Classics. I’ve ridden over 50 Gr1’s – they’re all special. Winning the July on Flaming Rock was probably one of the
best. Shirley Pfeiffer was great and stuck with me through thick and thin. When I came back from injury, the first thing people said was ‘oh, he’s done his nerve.’ Straightaway Chris gave me chances and I never looked back. I had to lose a lot of weight and we won it from a wide draw, which made it very satisfying. Winning the Queen’s Plate for Lady Laidlaw on Capetown Noir was also very special.” “Flobayou – I won 16 races on him and that was fantastic, but there were multiple horses I won multiple times on. With good horses you try and build relationships with them and I was fortunate to stay on quite a few.” Eli’s Truth get a mention – “nice story and nice people”, Free My Heart and Dynasty gets the plaudit of being “probably the best I’ve ever ridden.” There’s Lizard Island, Corcovado and horses like What A Winter, Noordhoek Flyer and Capetown Noir, who Karl rode at his stud launch at the 2015 Summerhill Stallion day. “They wanted me to do a Frankie Dettori and do a flying dismount – they had no idea!” he chuckles. “It’s wonderful to ride horses that go on to be stallions and broodmares” and here he singles out What A Winter for a special mention. “He has a great temperament and I think he’ll make a good stallion.” At the mention of Pat Eddery, Karl says he rode against Pat once in an international. “We got to ride against some real greats like Joe Mercer, Pat Eddery, Lester Piggott. I had some wonderful times and got to meet great people. I’ll miss riding work almost as much as riding in races. I liked sitting on the babies early on and being able to tell someone ‘you’ve got a nice one here’. I’d always try and pick out the Classic horses for the next season, pick a nice one early, book it in the spring and say I’d like to stay with it. It all comes with experience and confidence that trainers will keep you on. Dreams are what it’s all about!”
Lows At the Gold Cup meeting of 2002 when Karl famously didn’t weigh out on a horse called To Infinity and ended up being banned from Gold Circle tracks. “That was probably the worst day of my life,” remembers Karl. “The club were trying something new that day and all the horses placed first, second, third and fourth weighed out in public in front of the stands. Unfortunately I rode 3 favourites on the day and none of them won and I was getting abused more and more as the day wore on. After that race it was particularly bad and I didn’t weigh out in front as I should have. I did go to scales at the back, but it was my fault, I was distracted and that was the situation. We brought it up afterwards as we felt it was very unfair to the jocks – in any race there’s only one winner and
only so many happy punters. Luckily that’s the last time they did it and now only the winner weighs out in front.” Gold Circle ended up banning me from their tracks. It’s a long time ago now, so I don’t remember all the details, but we had to go to court and get it overturned. It was all sorted out in the end, but it wasn’t nice, I tell you.” “The other major low was the fall that put me out of action before Dynasty’s July.”
Regrets “Not winning the Met. I probably would have won it already if it had been run under today’s conditions. But maybe I’ll breed or train one – that’s always a possibility,” he says wistfully. It’s not that much of a stretch. It’s a little known fact that Karl has had significant success on the breeding front and was part of the JACK Syndicate (short for Jehan Malherbe, Alan Hodson, Carl de Vos and Karl Neisius) who bred the champion race filly Spook Express. Interestingly, Spook Express was not accepted for the Cape regional yearling sale, so she was sold off the farm as a 2yo. She went on to be a champion race filly in South Africa before being exported to the USA, where she ran second to Banks Hill in the 2001 Breeders Cup Fillies and Mares Turf. “We had some nice horses,” he says thoughtfully. Maybe I’ll do it again.”
Future plans “I haven’t made my mind up yet. I want to stay involved to some degree – there must be a gap somewhere. I follow racing closely and I’ve been going to most of the big races during the season. Being a spectator is very different from riding – watching from the stands, speaking to owners and trainers, it gives you quite a different view. I think I preferred the jockey room!” he quips. He has considered training, but is weighing his options carefully. “One would need the right backing. I would like to keep small and perhaps run it privately from a farm, but I don’t think that’s really feasible. It’s become a numbers game and small trainers tend to battle. Things have changed a lot since the Graham Becks and Laurie Jaffees of the world. People like them really understood the game and took the wins with the losses so well because they had the means and they saw the bigger picture. One needs to be in the game a long time to understand it to that extent and there are few owners like that nowadays. I feel for the trainers who need to try and explain it to newcomers.” “I’ve had a wonderful career and would just like to say a big thank you to all the owners and trainers that supported me and particularly to my family, the Kannemeyer yard and my friend and agent, Rob Champion.”

Kenilworth 13th February Three of the eight races in Cape Town on Saturday were run over 1000m and quickest home amongst these was CAPTAIN BAGG when registering his third career victory in the MR85 Handicap. Taken straight to the front by Grant Behr, the Captain Al gelding led throughout. One of the joint favourites STONE THROWER ran on well from off the pace over the final 400m, but he couldn’t get closer than a length and a quarter at the wire. By far the faster of the two 1600m races was the MR80 Handicap won by the improving ANNIGONI. Content to sit sixth of the eight for most of the journey, Vaughan Marshall’s charge ran on strongly in the straight, and did well to get the better of the aptly named WAITING FOR RAIN (led 150m) close home. There was a major upset in the faster of the two 1400m events when SEA SPRAY landed the spoils. Freely available at 14/1 on the off, the lightly weighted daughter of King Of Kings raced in the rear early on. She had to switch for a run en-route from the rear 200m out, but despite that she went on to win with authority by two. TITBITS Backed as if unbeatable at the track, the 1/5 favourite LEISURE TRIP won the maiden plate over 1000m very comfortably by a length and a half.

The second winner on the card for the combination of S’manga Khumalo and Clinton Binda, the 4yo son of Atso made all. The 28/10 favourite TABREEK ran on strongly from midfield to challenge below the distance, but he did have that one held by a half at the wire. The faster of the two 1400m events was the MR72 Handicap won by MISS TWEEDY. Soon up handy despite being a little slow into stride, Stuart Pettigrew’s charge raced prominent throughout. She put her head in front going through the 300m and comfortably accounted for the running on PAREE by two and a quarter. A MR90 Handicap over 1400m topped the bill and in a time 0,17 seconds slower than that of Miss Tweedy, the Toreador mare SHEPARD ONE registered her sixth career victory from just fifteen starts. On leaving the stalls it was MISS MAGICAL (reported as being distressed) who elected to make the running whilst Gary Alexander’s charge (a little slow into stride) raced fourth. She took up the running 100m out and just had enough in hand to beat the luckless favourite SEVENTH HEART by 0,4 lengths. Baulked for a TOP SPEED RATINGS run 300m out, the runner for this WEEKEND up was flying at the finish. (Ratings shown have already been TITBITS adjusted to allocated weights)
The 5yo DHAAMER made up many lengths from the rear when beaten just over half a length in the maiden plate over 2000m.

Allowed to flirt with 7/20 at one point despite returning from a rest and racing over 1000m for the first time, the well weighted son of Toreador was always positioned with every chance. He failed to quicken over the final 400m though and finished fourth beaten five and three quarters. Victory instead went to Sporting Post’s generously priced roving banker SEATTLE LADY. Nicely positioned in second going through halfway, the Sail From Seattle filly took up the running 300m out and comfortably accounted for her more fancied stable companion SILVER CLASS by three. Scottsville 14th February The 4yo HUMIDOR had been rumoured to be something special and after breaking the course record over 1200m here in the MR86 Handicap on Sunday, that might prove to be the case. In the red at 9/10 on the off, the son of Miesque’s Approval was taken straight to the front by Anton Marcus and made all. He kept on strongly at the business end of the race and with the rest some four and a quarter lengths adrift he beat the running on top weight FORTISSIMO by three quarters. Squeezed out at the start the runner up had to switch for a run en-route from midfield, and taking everything into account did very well indeed to get as close as he did. Four of the afternoon’s eight races were run over 1600m and quickest against the clock in these was BUCK SHOT in the MR64 Handicap. Another to make all, the 12/1 shot soon had the field very strung out. Indeed, he was a good seven lengths clear of the third horse turning for home. He kept on strongly in the straight and all out at the finish still had three and a half lengths to spare over the runner up. The one remaining race was a maiden plate over 2000m and here victory went to the horse with the highest merit rating in the race, IMPACT ZONE. Allowed to ease out to 7/1 from 11/2 at the track, James Goodman’s charge was always handy. Sent off third in the betting market at 9/2, the daughter of Western Winter was always handy. She was ridden to lead as they approached the 300m pole and won well by two and three quarters from the heavily supported second favourite S’WAY (10/1 into 4/1). The Year Of Slew
N
In the 14 years since his death, the great Seattle Slew has continued to make his presence felt on the stud book, writes Sarah Whitelaw.
ot only has his son A P Indy founded a strong and thriving dynasty, but Seattle Slew’s maternal grandsons, Stormy Atlantic and Lemon Drop Kid, have both continued to make their mark.
either A P Indy or Pulpit. Another son of A P Indy, Mineshaft, is the sire of one of US’ top older horses in Effinex, and is also the sire of impressive recent G3 Southwest Stakes winner Suddenbreakingnews, who could well give this powerful male line yet another US classic contender.
Another out of a Seattle Slew mare is the sadly deceased Sail From Seattle (Gone West), whose son, Gulf Storm, won the recent G1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship.
Tapit, who has headed the US General Sires List for the past two years, with his progeny smashing the all time record for prize money earned, is once again on top of the sires list, with his offspring including Mohaymen and Frosted.
World Cup Three of the top four in the betting (California Chrome, Frosted, Effinex) for the 2016 Dubai World Cup are Seattle Slew line descendants, and it certainly looks likely that the winner of that race could emerge from that foursome. New Stallion Off The Mark - TRAFFIC GUARD

T
Summerhill Stud’s exciting stallion Traffic Guard came out of the blocks flying when he broke the ice with his first raced runner at Greyville on Sunday. The Kom Naidoo-trained Sovereign Magic built on her three placed efforts with a courageous performance to win the Maiden Juvenile Plate run over 1000m on the polytrack.
he winner easily accounted for the much hyped Var debutante Beau Var, who could do no better than finish third on debut. The victory was also a memorable first for Sovereign Magic’s thrilled owner, Shamm Ganase , who had gone to just R40 000 to acquire her on the 2015 CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale. From Traffic Guard’s first crop, Sovereign Magic was bred by Messrs Thorpe and Zeeman, and is out of the three-time winning Silvano mare, Sovereign Lass. The cross looks an exciting one as her well-bred dam won up to 2000m and there has been plenty of talk and anticipation about the prospects of her high

quality miler sire, a son of More Than Ready. Traffic Guard was unbeaten at two over 1200m and celebrated his own best track effort in the Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes, where he ran the world’s best three-year-old of the time, New Approach, to a half length at level weights. His sire More Than Ready is one of the world’s leading dual hemisphere stallions and boasts impressive achievements, including twice Champion Juvenile Sire of Australia, and sire of two winners of the world’s richest Juvenile race, the Golden Slipper, as well as Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Champions, Pluck and More Than Real. He is also the sire of Australian sensation, Sebring, as well as Varsfontein-based
Gimmethegreenlight, one of the few horses to beat our champion miler Variety Club. Traffic Guard is More Than Ready’s second highest-rated Northern Hemisphere-bred son of all time, with a Timeform rating of 123lbs. He was a winner of five races in UK and Dubai from 1200m to 2300m. Traffic Guard is out of the Zafonic mare, Street Scene, a sister to Gr1 South African Derby hero, Chief Advocate and from the family of Gr1 Durban July winner Occult, leading sire Le Cordonnier, and Gr1 winner Erin’s Isle, amongst others. Traffic Guard stood for a R12 500 fee in 2015 at Summerhill. The handsome and athletic racer had five fillies and two colts on Tuesday’s Summer Ready To Run Sale.
2016 classic prospects Greenpointcrusader, Shagaf and Zulu to his name. While Bernardini has certainly been given every chance to succeed at stud, with the sire covering outstanding books of mares early on in his stud career, his ability to come up with Grade One winners cannot be denied –he is currently responsible for 13 top level winners. Brothers Congrats and Flatter (A P Indy out of Praise) occupy fourth and tenth spots on the list, with former Leading First Crop Sire, Congrats, enjoying a particularly good run with his 3yo fillies. Congrats’ sophomore fillies this year include brilliant UAE 1000 Guineas winner, Polar River, Saturday’s G2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes winner, Venus Valentine and Gr3 Santa Ynes Stakes victress, Forever Darling. North America’s Leading First Crop Sire in 2010 (when Bernardini was third) Congrats, who was placed in both the Gr1 Santa Anita Handicap and Gr1 Hollywood Gold Cup, is very much a “filly” sire, with his six top performers to date all members of the fairer sex.
Very Flattering In contrast, Congrats’ own brother, Flatter, who has built up a reputation as a consistently successful sire (33 stakes winners -5%SW to foals) is best known as the sire of top class horse, Flat Out, a dual winner of the Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, who is currently
standing at Spendthrift Stud. Interestingly, Congrats and Flatter continue to spread the great run of success of sire sons of A P Indy out of Mr Prospector mares, with this cross having also produced the likes of Pulpit and Malibu Moon. The Slew male line is also making its mark on North America’s Leading Second Crop Sire List, where, remarkably, five of the top sires (Friesan Fire, First Dude, Trappe Shot, Wilburn and Girolamo) are male line descendants of the former Horse Of The Year.
It Up (Midnight Lute) and 2016 Triple Crown hope, Exaggerator (Curlin). Inbreeding to Slew is also becoming increasingly successful and trends suggest that this pattern will continue to grow and flourish.
Present Day
This male line is also succeeding as broodmare sires, with A P Indy leading the list in North America in 2015.
Some of the top current racehorses are inbred to the 1977 Triple Crown winner, with this list including Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes winner and leading Gr1 Dubai World Cup hopeful, Frosted (Tapit), Gr1 Los Alamitos Futurity winner and Kentucky Derby prospect, Mor Spirit (Eskendereya) and unbeaten 3yo and Kentucky Derby strong fancy, Mohaymen (Tapit).
Damsire of over 130 stakes winners to date, A P Indy is represented as the broodmare sire of G1 Gulfstream Park Handicap winner, Lukes Alley (Flower Alley) this year. He is also the damsire of one of North America’s most exciting young sires in the form of Super Saver (Maria’s Mon), whose first crop included three Grade One winners, most notably champion sprinter Runhappy.
Both Mor Spirit and Mohaymen are out of mares by the very successful Dixie Union (who is from the same family as champion SA sire, Fort Wood), whose dam is by Seattle Slew’s Champion 2YO, Capote. Other grade one winners inbred to “Slew” include Condo Commando (Tiz Wonderful), Constitution (Tapit), and Morning Line (Tiznow).
Another champion son of Seattle Slew to succeed as a broodmare sire is the ill-fated 2yo champ, Vindication. The unbeaten Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner has just 60 daughters active at stud but they have already produced eight stakes winners (13%), including Gr1 Malibu Stakes winner and young sire, Shakin
With the growing number of Tapit sons at stud, Super Saver’s growing prominence at stud, added to the growing success of the likes of Tiznow and Lemon Drop Kid as broodmare sires, the number of top flight horses inbred to one of North America’s greatest racing sons is still likely to grow significantly.
