SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 4th - SUNDAY 6th MARCH 2016

FORESIGHT IS THE BREATH OF HOPE The leading Freshman sire of 2015, Visionaire, continues to do what he does best, LEAD. Anyone who saw Heaps Of Fun’s galloping lesson in a field of fancied winners in the Fillies Guineas (Gr.2) on the weekend will need little convincing. If you have any doubts, just speak to owner Nchakha Moloi and trainer Sean Tarry; they’ll tell you that if you missed Visionaire, you’re missing out!

The promising Rivarine will go close

RUFFIAN STAKES (Listed) at Turffontein on Saturday

T

Avontuur’s super stallion Var has five of the thirteen runners carded on the Turffontein juvenile double feature bill on Saturday. He holds a very strong hand in the R150 000 Listed Ruffian Stakes with a smashing trio of daughters – but an Australian bred galloper could blow them all away.

he New Approach fi lly Int r i g u i n g L a dy mad e a smashing debut at Scottsville shortly after the New Year celebrations, when streaking home to clock 46,01 secs for the 800m and win by 4,75 lengths easing up. Despite then regular De Kock jockey Anthony Delpech riding one of the raced runners for another yard, Intriguing Lady was backed to 18-10 and won like a professional under Brian Nyawo. There is admittedly little concrete evidence of any substance in those behind her. The De Kock team have commendably stayed loyal to Nyawo, who will no doubt feel some pressure. The young man only has a win strike rate of 2% with his 3 winners this season, but in fairness, he is usually riding the slow coaches.

Var Stars

Topping the Var charts and offering the most opposition will be Sean Tarry’s debut winner Exquisite Touch, one of only two course and distance victresses in the field. The Waterford Stud-bred flyer was easy to back at 5-1 on her first racecourse visit

earlier this month, but cruised home to beat Fursa (who she meets again here) by over 3 lengths. The second of the Var girls is Hamunaptra, named after a fictional Egyptian city, who made heavy weather of her 800m debut, when scraping home after drifting out from the red into 3-1. She did beat the boys and dug deep when asked – so could improve further with the experience under the belt. None of those behind her have raced again. Star Burst Galaxy is the third of the Vars and after winning on an objection over the course and distance on debut, she was comprehensively outplayed by 4,50 lengths by Exquisite Touch next time out. Star Burst Galaxy enjoys a 3kg pull at the weights but the Tarry galloper would have improved further with her first run experience and may be equal to the test.

Murray Rides

The Australian bred Fursa is a daughter of Hard Spun and the second of the De Kock runners. Promising jockey Callan Murray, who rode a hat-trick on Guineas Day, takes the mount on the twice secondplaced maiden.

Heavily supported on debut, Fursa enjoys a 3kg pull with Exquisite Touch, who beat her just over 3 lengths last time and she is another who looks to improve with the racing experience.

STORM BIRD STAKES (Listed) at Turffontein on Saturday

Spies Factor

Corne Spies is always a serious factor in the baby races and he saddles a pair of once-raced maidens. Promise Bay started 25-1 on debut when beaten 5,40 lengths by Arissa and may be looking for more ground to show her best ability. New freelancer Anthony Delpech rides Seattle Singer, who won her debut start – only to be demoted in the Stipes’ boardroom after shifting out on to Star Burst Galaxy. The rematch here could create a needle sub-plot and with a 3kgs pull in her favour, Corne Spies will fancy his charge’s chances – with the Delpech factor thrown into the cocktail!

Tough

It is difficult comparing the interprovincial form and the scope for improvement, but there should be sweet little to choose between Intriguing Lady and Exquisite Touch. Seattle Singer could be the joker in the pack!

C

Only eight runners line up for the R150 000 Listed Storm Bird Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday. With five winners amongst them, including two Spies fillies, a KZN dark horse raider and a beautifully-bred first timer from the Sean Tarry yard, who would want to risk the rent money with a punt on the nose?

orne Spies is one of the best judges in the game and when he makes a tactical call to get the weight allowance with his fillies and take on the boys, then he could well mean business. But the two Var males, Rivarine and He’s A Var look very decent.

Class

Rivarine was the highly anticipated first foal of international star and J&B Met winner River Jetez, and the handsome bay colt has looked every inch a horse for the future since winning on debut over Saturday’s course and distance on 2 January. Backed to win, he did not disappoint in getting the better of stablemate Aussie Austin, who won on Gauteng Guineas Saturday. Next time out things did not go according to the script, with Rivarine slow off and running green. Giving away 3kgs, he was beaten a length by a very decent sort i9n Leon Erasmus’ He’s A Var, he just looked more composed and mature on the night. They meet at level weights on Saturday, and

the return match looks to be an interesting sideshow.

Spies Girls Corne Spies opts to run two fillies here rather than the Storm Bird Stakes. Anthony Delpech partners the Querari 800m debut winner Fresh, who looked very forward and fast when winning on debut in December. She was well supported and won a good race. Her stablemate Rasberry (yes, it is a strange spelling) Lips showed nothing before travelling to Kimberley to win her maiden. It is difficult getting too upbeat about her prospects here.

Betting Sean Tarry’s well bred Trippi first-timer Flying Myth looks set to fly and his debut here may suggest that the colt is equal to the test. He cost R800 000 at sale and is out of a good mare. The last two look to have an uphill battle. Le Tigre ran fourth on an unfancied debut and had Flight Mode four lengths behind him. Rivarine must surely have benefitted from his last run and if he runs straight could have this lot beaten.

The Lecture gelding Memphis Mafia is top of the class this term

Be With Da Mob

Topweighted Winter Star has the class to surprise at best

IBHAYI STAKES (Listed) at Fairview on Friday

Spring Is In The Air BAUHINIA HANDICAP (Listed) at Turffontein on Saturday With a large field of fifteen fillies and mares, the pace for the Bauhinia sprint over 1000m should be fast and furious from the start. Such a strong pace will ensure a true run race, where the typical 1000m specialists may well have an advantage.

A

t the top of the weights with 60kg is Winter Star, whose best performances this season (going by ratings) have been over this course and distance, in October and November. Winter Star’s most recent form is over more ground, her last effort some 3 lengths off Captain Aldo over 1400m last week. How she’ll cope with the return to the minimum distance is hard to predict. Her task looks to be a stiff one. Ha Lucy produced a career-best rating when winning over 1000m at the Vaal last time out. She looks a good 1000m performer, but against her is that she’s not a reliable beginner. She’ll need to repeat her last effort. Sweet Painted Lady beat Ha Lucy by over 2 lengths over this course and distance in November, and is a kilo better off this time. That suggests she can beat Lucy again, especially as she likes to race handy or with the pace - her opponent unable to match that. A concern is Sweet Painted Lady’s last run, below best, beaten eleven lengths by stable companion Jo Malone. The latter didn’t frank the form when almost five lengths behind Ha Lucy next time out, but found the winner’s box again the time after that. Jo Malone seems to go well racing handy or upfront. A Million Dreams produced a career-best rating when winning over 1000m in December on the inside track here. She travelled to Cape Town after that, running once, when third over 1000m at Kenilworth on Met-day. It hard to say just how good she is (or isn’t) over this distance. Her trainer also ssaddles Seventh Symphony, who hasn’t raced since December, at which time her form was below best, possibly because of a recurring lameness. The break may have done her good, and she’s well suited by 1000m. Lightly raced Spring Wonder won her most recent start, over 1200m on the inner track here at the end of January. It’s hard to say whether she is a sprinter or not – if she is, improvement can be expected. She seems likely to race with the pace. Her stable companion Easy Game was beaten out of sight by Jo Malone last time out. This after she’d scored a nice win over 1200m

late in December. The daughter of Var has useful 1000m form, but her form has been unpredictable this season. She likes to race handy. Swift Sarah travelled to Cape Town for the Million dollar race in January, without making an impact. She’d won a 1200m race earlier the same month, making the pace, but she seems an unlikely 1000m sprinter given her pedigree. Drifting Dusk won her last start, over 1450m on the inner track here. She raced handy in what appears to have been a false run race, and it may well have been her sprinting ability that helped her win. The time before that she’d been third to Jo Malone over 1000m at the Vaal, which on ratings was a better effort. She’s 3kg better off this time, and ought to turn the tables. Seattle Lady won her most recent start in good style, following two second places the times before. She usually races handy or with the pace, and has the services of Delpech. Lumya has consistent recent 1000m form if ratings are anything to go by, and should be expected to be thereabouts again at the finish. KZN-trainer Miller brings Clear Sailing, who presumably is a travelling companion for the trainer’s 2yo entered in the juvenile feature race. Clear Sailing finished lame at her last start a month ago, on her return from a suspension for broken bloodvessels. It’s hard tp predict how she’ll go. Twilight Tiger put up two useful efforts in January, but ran a shocker last time out, after showing pace. She looks to have a stiff task at the weights (and races 2kg under sufferance, the bottom weight for the race having been fixed at 52kg). Her stable companion Miss December is a game sprinter, who tends to find a place with regularity, even though she’s not the soundest performer. She will no doubt be thereabouts again. In summary, an impossible choice. Quickness out of the gate, and distance suitability will count. We pick the lightly raced Spring Wonder, Lumya, Miss December and Drifting Dusk as ones to make the frame. Clearly a very open race and certainly not one to go short in.

T

Confidence will be high in the Dorrie Sham camp that their top-class Lecture gelding Memphis Mafia can go close to lifting the local 3yo Triple Crown. The R150 000 Listed Ibhayi Stakes should marginally stretch the smart galloper in terms of the sharpness of the 1400m trip – but he looks good enough to get away with that.

he Sham’s gutsy home-bred has hardly put a foot out of step since he bolted home at 33-1 to win the Listed Racing Association Stakes in October last year, as a post-maiden effort that had the cynics dashing for cover – and pointing the customary fingers. A winner of 4 of his last 5 starts, the only conceivable hurdles against Memphis Mafia appear to be the trip – and the 3kgs swing with the smart Fly Like The Wind. The two met in the RA Sophomore Plate over the course and distance at level weights last time, and a great ride saw Memphis Mafia gain the edge to win by 0,75 lengths.

Decent Sort

Renate Du Plessis trained Fly Like The Wind is 3kgs better off and nothing was finishing better when he stormed home for second at that last start. He also runs like a fellow who is most comfortable at the mile, but will have every opportunity to turn the tables

from his 1 draw. Justin Snaith is in town with the two time winning Trippi colt, Fifty Cents, who was considered good enough to go the Selangor Cup route early on. He never pitched for that race as he was not eating up, but his general form in Cape Town must give him a shout here. He has not run for 7 weeks, but has shown up well in relatively senior handicap company around the Kenilworth turn at his last two starts.

Bremner Duo

Yvette Bremner saddles the place consistent Cruzcampo and the rather formless former Gauteng based Slinky Jack. Cruzcampo invariablyn runs an honest race, but looks well held by Memphis Mafia, while Slinky Jack needs to improve on his two local starts. Alan Greeff saddles the promising Welsh Emperor and the Visionaire gelding, Struben. Welsh Emperor has something of a boom reputation but was solidly hammered by Memphis Mafia over the course and distance last time – where he failed

to run on. The son of Go Deputy is 2kgs better off with the Sham star, but he needs to find his spark – and cannot win this if repeating his last. Struben has run a hat-trick of polytrack seconds recently and surely is overdue to register a second career win. He does not look likely to achieve that feat in this company, but is worth quartet inclusion.

Unlikely

Jacques Strydom’s recent maiden winner Eviction gets thrown in the deep end after scoring at his fifth start over Friday’s course and distance. Even off his 53kgs, he will find this a lot tougher than he has encountered so far. Corne Spies trained Paulus is one of the most well travelled customers in town but looks hard-pressed to feature here after a quiet spell. He was stakes placed as a 2yo in KZN and could well burgle a place – as the Spies runners are always fit. Memphis Mafia is the choice to beat Fly Like The Wind and Fifty Cents. Welsh Emperor is worth another chance as his last run doesn’t look to be his true effort.

Sophomore Challenge – It Takes A Top Horse! The Listed Ibhayi Stakes is the opening leg of the R900 000 Eastern Cape Sophomore Challenge which will add plenty of intrigue to Fairview racecourse’s Autumn and Winter racing programme. The Challenge provides a lucrative bonus prize and incentive to owners. It consists of three legs and the distance of the races increase each time, meaning it will take a versatile horse to complete the treble and win the respective bonus. Last year’s Eastern Cape Sophomore Challenge enjoyed something of a fairytale start when Charles Lytton, the son of a teaser stallion, won the first leg. He later failed narrowly to win the second leg, the Listed East Cape Guineas.

The Sophomore Challenge culminates each year with the Gr3 East Cape Derby over 2400m, which is run at one of Fairview’s biggest annual meetings, being Derby Day. Captain Aldo (Bernard Fayd’herbe) holds off Lazer Star (Anthony Delpech) in a thriller

Gr3 ACACIA HANDICAP at Turffontein last Saturday

O

Sean Tarry has enjoyed a winning association with leading Cape breeders Avontuur and he looks to have another very decent sort on his hands. The well-bred Jet Master filly Off The Mark stepped back into the limelight with an impressive late dash win in the R250 000 Gr3 Acacia Handicap at Turffontein on Saturday.

Gr2 HAWAII STAKES at Turffontein last Saturday

T

Wolf Power winner Captain Aldo stamped himself a serious contender for the Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes when he sealed the verdict in a thrilling three-corned finish to win the R400 000 Gr2 Hawaii Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.

ff The Mark won early on at her third outing when very highly thought of by the SA champion trainer, but appeared to have lost her way somewhere down the road. But easy to back on Saturday at 7-1, she came storming home and looks to have strengthened up and is maturing into a filly that will win plenty. It was a race of mixed emotions for her trainer Sean Tarry, who saddled the favourite Seventh Heart. The daughter of Seventh Rock was given every chance but fell in a hole to run seventh and 3,30 lengths behind the winner. She proved she doesn’t go a mile and she is unlikely to be tried over the trip again. Cassie O’Malley led for a long way from Kwinta, with Noor and Sensible Lover in the firing line. Off The Mark was settled closer to last early

on, but was gradually brought into the action and within striking distance by young JP van der Merwe, who can do little wrong at the moment. At the 200m Off The Mark was in full stride and she stayed on too strongly for the improved again Sensible Lover, who came out firing after a dull Cape campaign. The winning margin was a comfortable 0,40 lengths and the time was registered at 98,36 secs. Mike de Kock’s Noor stayed on well for third, ahead of the ever present Cassie O’Malley who ran a decent race after showing pace. Off The Mark was registering her first stakes victory and being a well-bred filly, she has certainly enhanced her paddock value. She has now won 4 races with 3 places from 10 starts and stakes of R405 250. An R800 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 purchase, she was bred by Avontuur and is by Jet Master out of the four-time winning Sportsworld mare, Sport’s Chestnut.

he good to soft underfoot conditions added a tricky testing element to the quality 1400m feature and with the fancied Ice Machine and Trip To Heaven hesitating at the start, the race was thrown wide open. Three ‘stars’ lead the early gallop – Andrew Fortune had Talktothestars in front, ahead of Lazer Star and Winter Star, and this tongue-twister created a mini nightmare for commentator Alistair Cohen, with the pace a mixed one. The favourite Ice Machine was relaxed at the rear, with Trip To Heaven a length ahead of him on the rail. The ten horse field fanned out with attacks coming from all sides at the 400m marker as the first cheque looked anybody’s for the taking. With the 4yo filly Lazer Star accelerating impressively down the centre, and Ice Machine taking his time to find his pitch down the outside, it was the top-class heavyweight

Bernard Fayd’herbe who had Captain Aldo ghosting through down the inside. In a sprint to the wire, Captain Aldo got the better of the gallant Lazer Star, by a short head in a time of 86,89 secs. Ice Machine was a neck away in third, a head in front of the improved again, Unparalleled, who finished powerfully. Only a half length covered the top four, with Trip To Heaven producing a fairly modest effort after his poor start. He ran 1,75 lengths back in fifth. Captain Aldo races in the interests of St John Gray and well-known Cape restauranteur, Aldo Girolo. He was bred by Boland Stud and is a son of Captain Al out of the three-time winning Elliodor mare, Cuddle Me. Gray has been associated with this family with some success and said that Captain Aldo had shown that he could be close to as good as his brother, Glorious Jet. Next stop the Horse Chestnut!

Kotzen’s Pendant Exacta It has been a long time between drinks for Glen Kotzen’s smart Gr3 winner Double Whammy, but the daughter of Judpot bounced back with a big bang to produce a storming finish to win the R150 000 Listed Lady’’s Pendant run over 1200m at Fairview on Friday. IN a memorable result, Kotzen also saddled the runner-up, Night In Tahiti. Double Whammy was last in the winner’s enclosure in October 2014 when beating Gr1 winner Lanner Falcon to win the Gr3 Diana Stakes, but she has had her problems and was having only her twelfth start on Friday. Going off a generous 10-1, she was always the class in the field and Sandile Khathi rode a perfectly collected race as Double Whammy flew late to hold off stablemate Night In Tahiti by a half length in a time of 70,85 secs. The fancied Snaith coupling of Jo’s Bond and Blue Dawn had nothing to offer late, and ran seventh and eleventh respectively. The Shirluck Stud-bred Double Whammy is a daughter of the Varsfontein sire Judpot, and is out of the twice winning Kabool mare, Frida, the dam of a good few winners. She has now won 4 races with 4 places from 12 starts and stakes of R617 975.

Mama Mia That Sinking Feeling Antonius Pius’ lightly raced staying son Cool Chardonnay registered a commendable double in the R150 000 Listed Aquanaut Handicap, when he ran on strongly to win the 2450m feature at Turffontein on Saturday. A beautifully balanced and well judged ride by young apprentice Callan Murray, who rode a three timer on the Guineas afternoon, saw the Weiho Marwing trained Cool Chardonnay romp home in an exciting finish to a bumper Pick 6, where 2.23 winners collected a hefty R 1 972 812! Interestingly, Cool Chardonnay has had only two runs in the year since he beat Henry Higgins under 6,5kgs less pudding in the 2015 Aquanaut. Murray waited till late to put the whip on Cool Chardonnay, who eventually got a few lefthanded smacks in the final 150m as he went for the line to beat the fast-finishing Elusive Flyer by 0,75 lengths in a time of 157,79 secs. Marmalady stayed on gamely for third, ahead of Storm Warning. Cool Chardonnay has now won 4 races with 3 places from 10 starts for stakes of R354 375. The Highands Farms bred Cool Chardonnay is a son of Antonius Pius out of the American-bred Touch Gold mare Wine Dark Sea, who won twice. Weiho Marwing paid just R80 000 for the winner on the 2013 Emperors Palace National Two Year Old Sale.

Summerhill Stud produced three good feature winners over the past three days and it was the 4yo Admire Main filly Mamasita, the lesser fancied of the Weiho Marwing duo, who led all the way to win the R120 000 Umsinzi Handicap at Scottsville on Sunday.

The R100 000 Kimberley 1400 produced the best finish of a trueblue Monday afternoon for punters at Flamingo Park with Ryan Munger getting longshot Taso The Sailor up in the final stride to head the consistent Emerald Mackay, who had looked a winner inside the distance.

THE 1800m non black-type feature was only able to attract seven runners, with the class Gr1 winner Bilateral carrying topweight under Anton Marcus and touching 9-10 before starting a firm 15-10 favourite. Delpech rode a perfectly judged race on Mamasita from the front and she won full of running to score by 1,25 lengths in a time of 114,10 secs. This was her first win on turf, Anton Marcus had Bilateral out wide but she simply lacked the toe to sprint with the leaders and she only got going late – falling out of the Place Accumulator, much to the chagrin of punters. Just back from a feature success in the Cape, Gathering Fame chased her home with Supercede also running a fair race to grab third. The 4yo Mamasita is a daughter of Admire Main out of the one-time winning Joshua Dancer mare, Espinado. She has won 4 races with 6 places from 15 starts for stakes of R340 775.

TASO The Sailor has won four races in the Northern Cape since relocating under a change of ownership from the Paul Peter yard to Bill Human just over a year ago. On Monday he picked up the biggest win of his career to date and produced a storming finish from lengths back to pip Emerald Mackay. The verdict took a photo but it showed that Ryan Munger had timed his charge to perfection, to get up and win by a head in a time of 85,50 secs. Jaguar was always thereabouts and held on for third, ahead of Just A Jag. The Summerhill bred Taso The Sailor is a 4yo gelded son of Muhtafal out of the Saumarez mare, Mediterranean. He took his stakes tally to R270 725 with his fifth win and 7 places from 27 starts. Taso The Sailor was purchased for R120 000 under the name Sail On Sailor by Paul Peter at the 2013 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.

Karl Zechner and his newest best friend Abashiri look set to rewrite the record books

Betting World Gr2 GAUTENG GUINEAS

T

at Turffontein last Saturday

Emotions reigned supreme at Turffontein on Saturday as South Africa’s fast ascending equine star Abashiri confirmed his arrival with a breathtaking display of power galloping to grind his hapless opposition into the dust with a terrific win in the R1 million Gr2 Gauteng Guineas.

he first leg of the 2016 SA Triple Crown was run in beautiful weather conditions in front of a crowd that had RA CEO Larry Wainstein asking, “where have you guys been all this time?” Trainer Mike Azzie had the son of Go Deputy looking a million dollars and for a man who always wears his heart on his sleeve and talks more than an American Presidential candidate, he was decidedly subdued in the build-up week, suggesting that his charge was going to do the talking on the track. “I am not talking to the media or Tellytrack. Usually I’m the one who does all the talking

and it lands me in trouble so this time I’m going to let the horse do the talking.”

So said the Azzman earlier in the week and it certainly did the trick! On a dream afternoon for Azzie and his mainstay owners Adriaan and Rika Van Vuuren, things came together with the gelding running a cracker to register a hat-trick of wins – but more importantly to signal that he could well gallop in the golden hoofprints left by Horse Chestnut and Louis The King. Enjoying one of the best seasons of his career to date, Karl Zechner never missed a heartbeat, although he had a few of us with our vital organ in our throats, as he hit the

front with what seemed like an eternity still to run. Thoughts that the big moment had gotten to the talented rider were quickly quelled, as Abashiri dug deep from the 400m and frankly never looked like being nabbed. He performed his customary hanging out display, but it was less accentuated than previously and he is obviously learning quickly. The outsider of the Tarry trio in the King’s Chapel colt Malak El Moolook seemed the only danger late, but he was run out of it by a late pop of the cork by the consistent Champagne Haze, who came through to snatch second. The judge declared that Abashiri had won by 2,50

lengths in a time of 97,95 secs. The Johan Janse Van Vuuren danger duo of Brazuca and New Predator disappointed, with the former finishing the better to secure fourth, but a solidly beaten 4,35 lengths off. The Mike de Kock trained Suyoof ran a bold attacking race from the front but was outrun and finished in midfield. The KZN based attack were comprehensively outplayed, as was probably to be expected. Jockey Karl Zechner paid tribute to a very promising 3yo. “I am so privileged to ride a horse like this and I appreciate the owner and trainer staying loyal to me. Abashiri gives one such a great feel. Typical of a top horse, he is so relaxed and he is the kind of athlete that can correct a jockey’s mistakes. I had him in a nice position and wanted to be closer than usual as I knew they’d come from the outside. But the pace was right and he told me when he was ready

to go. I am so grateful to be part of the team and thanks to my agent Desmond Zacpack Zackey – it is his daughter’s birthday today so it is a double celebration,” said Zechner. Choking back the tears, an emotional Mike Azzie said that Abashiri was the type of horse a trainer woke up early for. “Like Dynasty he won a mile first time of asking. I told my sons Adam and Ryan that this was was another opportunity like National Currency and we couldn’t mess things up. Adriaan and Rika are not owners, they are friends. This horse makes me look better than I am. “He really is a machine. Well done to my team –they take my nonsense every day, but I’m a perfectionist and my clients deserve nothing less,” he said. Owner Adriaan Van Vuuren said that next to a child being born, moments like this were the most memorable. “This horse means business-he has the look.

When Abashiri walked into the ring it was a moment reminiscent of me meeting my wife again,” he said. The magnificent Abashiri was bred by Lammerskraal Stud and is a son of resident sire Go Deputy, out of the prolific winner producing mare, Donya. The latter, a daughter of champion broodmare sire Elliodor, won seven races. Abashiri was very well bought at R400 000 on the National Yearling Sale. He is now a winner of 4 races with 2 places from 6 starts and stakes of R940 000. That excludes the BSA Value Added Stakes Bonus of R102 500. On breeding and raw ability, he could well go on and make history this season. The next leg of the Triple Crown is the Gr1 SA Classic to be run over 1800m on 2 April. Larry will be hoping that the crowd returns – and on what we saw today, we can’t wait.

The Summerhill Stud bred Visionaire filly Heaps Of Fun exacted sweet revenge on her Fillies Mile conqueror Negroamaro when she led all the way and got the better of a dogged tussle over the final 300m to win the R500 000 Wilgerbosdrift Gr2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas at Turffontein on Saturday. he Tarry team were in typical major day form and a superb ride by the Mauritzfontein-Wilgerbosdrift sponsored S’manga ‘Bling’ Khumalo, saw Anton Marcus playing second fiddle in a thrilling opening leg of the Wilgerbosdrift SA

Triple Tiara. For Tarry, the victory by the obviously smart Heaps Of Fun would have echoed shades of his 2015 Triple Tiara exploits with the brilliant Siren’s Call, who failed narrowly at the final hurdle of the coveted series. But back to the present, and what a brave

tactical ride it was by the ever reliable Khumalo, who showed fine judgement when it counted most – at the jump and at the wire. A decision to go out and dictate matters ahead of the fancied Negroamaro, looked to have turned pear shaped at the 400m as Marcus gunned the beautiful grey daughter of Fort Wood into top gear. But despite being passed for a stride or three, the 20-1 Heaps Of Fun lived up to her name, as she caught her breath and had the last laugh, powering away to put 0,90 lengths between herself and the favourite. She clocked 98,65 secs.

Negroamaro was not disgraced, but was just not good enough on the day, with Gavin Van Zyl’s low-key contestant Frosty Friday running a smart third a further 0,90 lengths back. She’s A Dragon snuck into fourth, with De Kock’s Persian Rug in fifth – she could be a

different proposition in the next two legs. Bred by Summerhill, Heaps Of Fun is a daughter of Visionaire out of the one-time winning Northern Guest mare, Dream Starling. A R200 000 2014 CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run graduate, Heaps Of Fun has

won three races with 2 places from 8 starts for stakes of R570 625. It will be fascinating to see how she builds on this performance in the next leg – the R1 million Wilgerbosdrift Gr1 SA Fillies Classic which will be run over 1800m at the same venue on 2 April.

All Talk No Action In Cape?

Trainers Need To Wake Up

T

Cape Town racing has been shocked by the decision to axe this past Tuesday’s Durbanville meeting – handing over R620 000 in stakes to Port Elizabeth – but, more particularly, by the fear that this could be just the beginning, writes Michael Clower.

he decision was taken after entries of 160 produced just 54 acceptors. The two 2000m races had nine and ten runners but each of the other six had only between five and seven. A hastily arranged Fairview polytrack substitute produced 95 declarations. “I think it’s a crisis,” said Tellytrack presenter and former trainer Stan Elley, echoing the view of many. “We’ve got to do something or Phumelela will cut more meetings. A lot of people’s livelihoods are at stake here.”

Big Yards

Elley, a member of what is effectively a local programmes committee for more than half his 41 years as a trainer, believes the problem lies with the big yards (he estimates that

the top half dozen have 8085% of the horses) often being reluctant to run their clients’ horses against each other for fear of upsetting owners. He said: “Trainers have got to wake up. Owners have to as well and spread their horses around more while I think there should be a limit on the number of horses each trainer is allowed. You cannot do anything about the trainers that have their own yards but you can with the rest. It has been done in PE and I believe in Durban too.”

Warning

Last September Phumelela and Kenilworth Racing warned trainers that fixtures would be dropped and stakes reduced if the average field did not increase from ten to 12 (the minimum necessary to generate decent betting turnover). Yet this month only

six of the 62 races produced 12 or more runners. Dean Kannemeyer is one of the big trainers involved and he said: “They tell me that I am not having enough runners and they are putting me under pressure but I have moved 30 of my horses to Durban. “I understand the need for runners but there is something wrong somewhere in Cape Town. I see meetings here with 150-160 entries but in Durban they can have as many as 700. “What is needed is for somebody to sit down with me (and other trainers), ask how many horses I’ve got, where I want to run them and over what distances in a coming three-month period rather than being told you’ve got so many rated 70-80 etc.”

Rest Time

Eric Sands, a former member of the programmes

committee, made the point that in February many Cape trainers want to give their horses a break after a busy summer season while most two-year-olds based here do not race until the rains come to avoid getting sore shins on the firm ground. He added: “I am not saying that the trainers are blameless – they are not – but the programmes are drawn up only twice a year, one for five months and the other for seven, and they are done two to three months in advance which means that a horse can be running in a programme prepared ten months earlier. It should be done every three months and from a boxby-box census to make it relevant.” Kenilworth Racing issued a press release last Friday saying, inter alia: “A number of trainers have not stepped up to the plate… the last resort is to reduce the number of racemeetings… re ce nt l y a ce nsus was completed and the winter programme (April-August) is based on the latest facts.”

T

Have the National Horseracing Authority failed in their duty of care to the industry in respect of their glaring omission to publish names of delinquent and bad paying owners? he Sporting Post has learnt that certain owners have been blocked at the National Racing Bureau from nominating, accepting or declaring their horses, on the authority of the National Horseracing Authority. The list includes a high-profile former Club Steward, a race sponsor and a senior Advocate.

The National Horseracing Authority’s failure to publish the names means that the errant payers can effectively continue to obtain buyer’s cards at sales, and incur other debts to unwitting breeders, vets and other industry service providers.

www.goldcircle.co.za

This is surely an unacceptable situation, particularly in these trying times and flies in the face of business logic and good practice.

Stand Together As One Waffle From Trainers

While the ‘temporary’ nature of the blocking action suggests scope for possible ‘rehabilitation’ and regularising of the debt, the rights of the individual cannot take precedence over the interests of the broader industry.

I have requested Clyde Basil to go back to an old system where each trainer must send in a list of the horses they have in training, along with their current merit ratings and preferred distances! Simple! The programme is a disaster at the moment and I fully agree with Stan Elley with the number of boxes allocated to big trainers! We really need to stand together as one in the Western Cape as we have some seriously top horses but more importantly we have incredible owners! There is lots of waffle from the trainers as well as excuses and the blame game. Why can PE race with full fields every week? Why can Gauteng and KZN race 2 to 3 times a week with decent sized fields? Horses are standing idly in boxes and trainers are coining it on training fees at the cost of owners! If trainers are not going to race their horses then maybe Cape Town should only have a meeting a week on a Saturday - maybe then we will have full fields! Sporting Post Letter’s Page Policy Letters to The Sporting Post are welcome from anyone. While letters printed do not necessarily reflect the opinions of The Sporting Post, where the content is not libellous and the source is known, letters shall be published, when possible, as their authors intended. Replies are welcome, and every effort will be made to allow participants to make their positions clear, for as long as there is interest in the thread.

Particularly given the fact that the individuals concerned are in arrears and making no effort to regularise the situation – it surely stands to reason that no trainer would resort to these processes if there was any evidence of cooperation from the patron. Why, as an example, when a jockey is suspended or a trainer refuses to have his vehicle searched by the Stipes, are these cases published widely? Yet the very people from whom the industry needs to be protected are allowed to carry on regardless. It is time for a rethink – like it or not, ‘name and shame’ is a massive deterrent No comment has been forthcoming from the National Horseracing Authority. For the record, Rule 97.7 states:

olly went under the knife earlier this month for his second knee replacement surgery in a year. His daughter Jade told the Sporting Post that the family were thrilled to have the old man home. “My Dad was in for 11 days with two ops so he’s not exactly a happy chappie. But he is a real war horse and he says that he is also a Yorkshireman and will pull through it all and bounce back,” she said. Now in his 69th year, Molly originally hoped to be back on the track for Classic Day on 2

April and after Abashiri’s smashing victory on Saturday, he is not the only one who will be booking a seat at Turffontein. As a contracted employee, Molly receives no remuneration for his time on the sidelines and recently made an appeal for assistance, from anybody who is willing and able to. SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 4th - SUNDAY 6th MARCH 2016

Racing usually takes a battering in formal and social media, so it was refreshing to see how a little focus on the positive can make a very big difference.

O

ne of my favourite pieces of sculpture is in Adelaide Street, behind St Martin-in-theFields church in London’s West End. It’s not a particularly big, impressive or beautiful sculpture, but I love it nonetheless. It is by Maggi Hambling and is called ‘A Conversation with Oscar Wilde’. It features Wilde’s bronze head rising from a green granite sarcophagus which also serves as a bench. I love the fact that it’s a bench as London is full of benches, usually overlooking something nice and inviting you to sit down and take some time out to enjoy the view. I also love the fact that the work was a collaborative effort by a committee of Oscar Wilde fans who wanted to have a public monument to him and made it happen. Unfortunately Adelaide Street is a funny little side street so there isn’t much of a view. It houses a line of refuse bins and it’s frequented by the homeless and late night revellers needing an emergency ‘comfort break’, so it usually smells a bit. Which makes it all the more appropriate that the work is inscribed with a quotation from his play Lady Windermere’s Fan: “We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars”. Racing can be a tough old game sometimes, full of sharp edges and harsh realities, so when the occasional ‘easy’ week swings by, it’s worth grabbing onto. Last week was one such week.

The internet I stumbled across a website by Jason Wood on Thepaddockview.com which featured a cute post titled “5 Things That Horse Racing Can Teach Us About Life’ and top of the list was “You Need a Team! He wrote, “Horses can run, but can they win without a team? It takes a team to prepare them for the challenges ahead. A team to support them during injury or weakness. “In our lives, we all too often overlook how important those around us are. Whether it be our family or friends, we need a strong team in our corner! Sometimes you need a little voice in your ear (or

on your back) to wake up and make the right choice.”

The luck of the Irish I’m not sure why it got to me so long after the event, but Irish Racing posted video footage (and a pat on the back) to jockey Bryan Cooper and others who helped fellow rider Robbie Power out of a potentially nasty situation at Gowran Park Racecourse last year. Both riders’ horses fall (and appear to be fine), but Power gets a foot stuck in a stirrup. Luckily the quick thinking Cooper grabs the reins of Power’s horse and holds it still while the hapless jockey can be safely extricated.

Victor Espinoza The next highlight of my week was seeing Victor Espinoza, America’s first Triple Crown Champion jockey in 37 years, honoured with the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award for 2016. First presented by Santa Anita in 1950, the award honours riders who demonstrate high standards of personal and professional conduct, on and off the racetrack. The recipient is chosen by a vote of jockeys nationwide and interestingly the award can only be won once during a rider’s career. Victor Espinoza was deemed to have helped Thoroughbred racing project a positive image far beyond the confines of the Thoroughbred industry throughout 2015, elevating the sport’s exposure and acceptance to a level not seen since the 1970s. In addition to his numerous media appearances through the 2015 Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup meeting, Espinoza was tireless in his efforts on behalf of cancerstricken youth, donating 10 per cent of his winnings to support pediatric cancer research at City of Hope cancer treatment centre outside Los Angeles. The trophy that goes along with the award is a one-foothigh replica of the life-size statue of Hall of Fame rider, George Woolf that, along with a bronze sculpture of his favorite mount, Seabiscuit, has a place of honour in the Santa Anita Paddock Gardens.

American Pharoah Following on from Victor Espinoza’s award came the

news that American Pharoah had confirmed his first mare in foal. It has caused something of a celebration among his fans, but better yet, like his feel good jockey, it seems American Pharoah is still reaching beyond the ‘normal’ racing realms. There is huge interest in him, how he is settling in at stud and of course, how things will unfold for his future.

Penny Chenery Last week, US Triple Crown winner and track legend, Secretariat’s ownerbreeder Penny Chenery joined WHOA – the Water Hay Oats Alliance. The Water Hay Oats Alliance was founded in 2012 and is a grassroots movement of like-minded individuals (including our adopted American son, Barry Irwin) who support the passage of federal legislation to prohibit the use of performanceenhancing drugs in the sport of horse racing in the USA. The Thoroughbred Horseracing Integrity Act of 2015 (HR 3084), introduced by Reps. Andy Barr, R-Ky., and Paul Tonko, D-N.Y., would encourage the adoption of a national uniform standard for drugs and medication in American thoroughbred racing and grant rule-making, testing and enforcement oversight to an entity created by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. In support of her move, Chenery wrote, “Every competitor and everyone betting on a race would be getting a fair shake if this legislation becomes law. It would undoubtedly enhance the welfare of our equine athletes and the integrity of our sport.”

Michael Azzie Mr Azzie is known for being attached to and outspoken about his horses. It’s one of the things that makes him one of the racing game’s great characters. Last week, in the run up to the Betting World Gauteng Guineas, when asked about his chances regarding his runner Abashiri, he commented “I am not talking to the media or Tellytrack. Usually I’m the one who does all the talking and it lands me in trouble so this time I’m going to let

the horse do the talking.” Being in the media and the public glare is part and parcel of training and as the saying goes, the tallest trees catch the most wind. Mr Azzie usually has a few nice horses in his yard and punters and the racing public being a curious bunch (there’s money at stake after all), it’s not unnatural to want to discuss them. Life would be boring if we all liked the same horse (or anything else for that matter), but as always there was someone who had to aim a comment a little further south than was really necessary. Of course racing is built on opinion and that’s all good and well – but what was really refreshing was the number of people who took the trouble to comment in defence of Mr Azzie. It was – nice!

Abashiri There is nothing like a good horse to make one want to get out of bed in the morning and the prospect of a champion fires the blood and feeds the imagination like no other. Enter Abashiri who lived up to the pre-race hype by winning the 2016 Betting World Gauteng Guineas in emphatic fashion. In his post-race video montage, Andrew Bon even borrowed a few snippets from Louis The King’s theme song ‘In the heart of a Champion’. Stirring stuff indeed. However, while it was a good race and Abashiri is undoubtedly a very exciting prospect, what really caught the eye was the lead in. In something that has become something of a rarity on our race tracks, it seemed an entire tribe of Van Vuurens descended on the Turffontein winner’s enclosure to lead their horse in. It was absolutely wonderful to see racing being a good old-fashioned family affair. There were friends, family and children, Malan du Toit and the Azzies and I found myself absent-mindedly saying ‘yesssssssssssss’ at my TV screen. That’s what racing is all about – fun and family and shared success.

Positivity What all these incidents had in common was the fact that all of them came about as the result of groups of people getting together and combining their efforts to achieve something positive. Better yet, every single one of these stories were positive racing stories and, apart from one ‘charlie’ who made a

negative comment about the Azzie yard, it came as a very pleasant surprise to see so much positivity generated by and directed to racing. It’s the first time in a long time that I’ve seen racing stand up and without being apologetic, simply get on with the job of racing and being proud of who we are and what we do. Whether it was American Pharoah’s baby joy, jockeys being heroes, (and better yet, being celebrated as such), or good people taking a stand for the good of racing, there was no holding back and the message was simply, ‘Hey, we’re here, we’re good people, we’re good at what we do and we’re working to make things better.’

Disclaimer Before the animal rights lot jump down my throat, yes of course there are inherent problems in the system (see my disclaimer above – ‘we are all lying in the gutter’). However, when one of racing’s myriad crises rolls round, discouraging as it always is, we mustn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. While the few individuals who give racing a bad name may not be poster children for the industry, it’s important to remember that they are not representative of it, either and that by and large, the vast majority of owners, trainers, assistant trainers and industry professionals are decent, hardworking people who have the best interests of the horse at heart. It was good to see that showcased so clearly and in so many different ways last week, but what really gave me pause to sit on my proverbial Oscar Wilde bench, was the positive way both the racing

public as well as the outside world responded. I don’t know whether we’re experiencing a Triple Crown hangover and perhaps floating on the coattails of the big brown phenomenon that is American Pharoah, but for the first time in as long as I can remember there aren’t a gazillion people criticising or saying racing is rigged, cruel to the horses, we’re all cheats, etc etc. Instead there was admiration for Penny Chenery, respect for our jockeys and what they do, pride in our industry professionals and hope for American Pharoah’s’ progeny. We stood up for ourselves and it felt good to be part of it. The reason I’m making a bit of a fuss is that as I wrote last week, people are attracted to good things. They want to be near and part of them. Also – as I ended up experiencing first-hand good stories, good horses and good people make one feel good about being involved with racing and that positivity spreads. They say that every moment you spend with your horse, you are training it. It’s probably worth considering that every time one talks about racing to outsiders we are doing the same thing. Either way, after the battering that we usually take, it was good to see that with a little effort, opinion can be swung the other way too.

In conclusion When asked what he thought of sports, Oscar Wilde replied, “I approve of any activity that requires the wearing of special clothing.” With coloured silks for the jockeys and smart outfits for racegoers, it’s nice to think he may have approved of racing.

VERY FAST Angry Owners

Milnerton trainer Paul Reeves is narked about the loss of the Durbanville Tuesday meeting. “I am a small trainer with 30 horses and 19 of them are two-yearolds. My clients have paid training fees and they were expecting to race. I’m angry,” he told Michael Clower.

SHORT HEADS

Despite references to ‘sticky going’ Muscatt broke the Scottsville 1000m course record on Sunday held by champion Captain Of All. Trained by Michael Roberts, he won the Pinnacle Stakes in a time of 55,8 secs, in the process breaking the previous record of 55,96 secs set up in March 2015. The 6yo Victory Moon gelding was ridden by apprentice Calvin Habib and carried a nett 54,5 kgs.

Jockey Marco Van Rensburg gets fined R1500 for having the cheek to salute in the adrenalin rush of a celebratory gesture before the post when WINNING easily on Bondiblu at Turffontein on the previous Saturday. What contravention of the rules was the greater of the two evils - and where exactly was more damage done to the game’s image and to punters?

Wine & Winner

Two 8yo sons of Avontuur stallion Oratorio performed like spring chickens over the weekend and are aging like the fine wines on the magnificent estate where their illustrious Dad currently resides. Mourinho ran third in the Gr2 St Charles at Caulfield on Saturday, while Military Attack ran a cracker to run close up third to Designs On Rome in the Gr1 HK Gold Cup on Sunday.

But Winona’s Best Wishes Jarred A Rider… Apprentice jockey Winona Costin has made allegations that she was thrown out of Randwick Racecourse on Saturday by security guards that believed she was under age and without a guardian. The 21-year-old attended the meeting with her two nieces, aged 18 and 14, and was on the sidelines due to a concussion she suffered in a fall at Canberra last Sunday.

FOR FLAG’S SAKE!

With the final race at Flamingo Park on Monday being declared null and void after a botched false start call, the attention has once again fallen on the simple idea of the employment of a flag man. If the jockeys cannot hear the signal due to wind conditions, then the present system simply doesn’t work. This is not the first time – it won’t be the last either.

We hear that jockey Jarred Samuel is recuperating well after a horror accident at Greyville on 4 December 2015. He posted this note on his Facebook page on Monday: ‘Thank god the doctor has said all is looking great. I just have to wait for my fractured spine to heal. So I am ‘A ok’ and will be ready to be back in action once the spine heals’.

Olympic Cycling champion Victoria Pendleton is a great advert for racing, says the owner of the horse she hopes to ride in the Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. But the 35 year old has been criticised by some exjockeys, who feel she is putting herself in danger. She was unseated from favourite Pacha Du Polder at Fakenham on her National Hunt Rules debut. This was her second fall. Pendleton only had her first riding lesson a year ago!

Bold & The Beautiful

Ascot Stud’s Equus Champion young sire Bold Silvano became the first of the first crop sires to have a first winner and he has since become the first of the young sires to have his second first crop winner. His latest success came with the Mike de Kock trained colt Bold Rex making a smart winning debut at Scottsville on Sunday. Bred by Ascot Stud, Bold Rex justified his even money favouritism by romping to victory by three and a half lengths.

Another Trainer Calls Time

The latest NHA racing calendar confirms that trainer Bradley Maroun has relinquished his licence. This follows on the heels of Dominic Zaki’s sudden move to throw in the towel in December. We left messages for Maroun to attempt to ascertain his reasons, but these were not returned.

Sally Jourdan

Lammerskraal IN THE Limelight Sally Jourdan has been with Lammerskraal since 1987 and overseen the expansion of the farm, the development of the broodmare band, the phenomenon that was Western Winter and the farm’s recent sale to Pieter Graaff.

With Abashiri grabbing headlines in last weekend’s Betting World Gauteng Guineas and Go Deputy very much alive and well in the Lammerskraal stallion paddock, the future looks rosy

About Sally Sally Jourdan grew up in Durban to an entirely unhorsey family. However, the bug bit when her fondness for German Shepherds found her at obedience classes at the Greyville racecourse infield and the sight of the galloping racehorses first captured her imagination. Her father was a regular buyer of the Mercury and Daily News and Sally remembers him allowing her to play a 50c PA as early as age 10. “I’d give him a straight line and we would often win,” she smiles. Her godparents had a farm in Balgowan where Sally learnt to ride and her fate was sealed. Her family moved to Komga in the Eastern Cape when she was 16 and Sally got her first horse. “It cost me R2/month to keep him on the common. I’d have to walk out of the village to catch him, walk him back, brush him, saddle up and go riding. My dad probably got me into horses, but my mom was probably the one who supported me most. I’d sit and read the racing pages out loud and chat away for hours, mostly about their breeding, and my mom would have to sit and listen,” she remembers fondly. By the time Sally left home, she had collected 7 horses for her mom to take care of! After a year of secretarial college and 2 years working in a bank, Sally decided that the corporate world was not for her. She gained experience with Terry Silcock’s Starston Stud and when visa complications put paid to a job offer at Juddmonte Farms in the UK, she adjusted her compass and made for the Western Cape instead, eventually landing a job at Daytona’s quarantine station. A keen sportswoman, Sally played squash every evening and weekends were dedicated to playing polocrosse, where she met Mike Rattray’s son, Chris. “John Kramer had found the farm for Rattray back in 1983 and it was originally a wheat farm. I used to come to the farm for parties and braais. The farm was very undeveloped and there wasn’t a tree on the place, but I could see it had potential and made up my mind that I wanted to work there.” Despite Chris’s protests that it would be too much of a challenge, Sally

joined the Lammerskraal team in August 1987. When Chris left to play polo and farm in KZN two years later, Sally applied for the manager’s job, but was told they were looking for a man. Sally sat down and wrote a long letter setting out why she was the person for the job. When Chris approached his father, Mike asked “Do you trust her? If you do, we should give her a chance.”

Girl power “It was tough,” says Sally, “But it taught me to stand on my own two feet. I had to take the mares to be covered, drive the trucks to fetch feed and roughage and there was no secretary, so I did the office work and wages by hand. I put in irrigation, planted trees and learnt about pastures and crop farming as I went along. I asked other breeders what pasture mix they used and I liked to read, so I did a lot of research and we put a lot of time and effort into our pasture management. Under Sally’s watchful eye, the stud grew and expanded and currently made up of a collection of four farms. Sally implemented a strict pasture management regime which ensures perennial high quality grazing. The farm grows its own high quality teff, oathay and lucerne as well as producing its own bedding from barley. They still have the herds of sheep, which gave Lammerskraal its name as well as Angus stud cattle and new owner, Pieter Graaff’s herd of Brown Swiss.

Going commercial “At the time I joined they stood an Argentinian stallion called Enduzante and about 11 Argentinian mares, mostly bought by Ralph Rixon. I told Rattray that we had no chance of being commercial with the existing stock and we made the decision to do it properly. We went to the Pietermaritzburg mare sale and bought Saintly Lady and Welsh Woman. For many years thereafter Rattray purchased every good race filly he could. After all, the best race fillies will be your better broodmares.”

Stallion roster A few years later they decided a stallion was needed and nearly a year’s worth of research went

into the purchase of Western Winter. “Charles Faull found him for us. We’d considered him a year earlier, but decided he hadn’t done quite enough yet. Of course, by the time we did want him, the price had gone up. I flew out to Belmont to look at him and he just had this amazing presence. Rattray phoned and asked whether I wanted him and I said yes.” “He had a white eye, which some people were nervous of, but there was no temperament with it. We used to keep the stallions at the stallion barn at one end of the farm, but Western Winter had such a good temperament that we realised he did better with company and eventually we kept him in the broodmare barn with his mares.” Western Winter helped build up the farm – both in terms of reputation as well as in brick and mortar terms and when he died in 2013, they buried him next to the stallion barn with a fittingly large memorial slab overlooking his kingdom. Western Winter was joined by Rakeen, Parade Leader and most recently, Go Deputy, sire of the impressive 2016 Betting World Gauteng Guineas winner, Abashiri.

The importance of family The new regime paid dividends and the winners started coming with horses such as Celtic Grove, Set Afire, Drift Ice, Yard-Arm, Jagged Ice, Rudra, Solo Traveller, Viva Maria, Red Ray, Brutal Force, Nania and Capetown Noir amongst others. However, asked to name stand out horses, Sally says that it’s the disappointments that stick with you more than the successes. “Often you’ll have a foal and think this is a really nice horse, but then it disappoints when it gets to the track. And it’s not always the horse’s fault. That’s why it’s so important to know each family and each horse,” she stresses earnestly. “Yard-Arm was always a nice horse – he was sleek and elegant and always had this incredible athleticism about him.” Of course there are always the surprises. “Celtic Grove was a big block of a baby. When we broke him in at 2, he was almost like a Warmblood. I never anticipated he’d be as

good as he was because he was so heavy.”

Sally says she does not use any of the pedigree programmes such as Tesio or Gr1 Goldmine, “I use the Charles Faull system” she quips. She also sets a lot of store in mares and in families and stresses the importance of knowing the family and history of each horse and this is perfectly demonstrated in the pedigree of Abashiri.

Abashiri “The mare (Donya) was a half-sister to Yard-Arm by Elliodor. She had a very good Western Winter colt that ended up in Dubai, called Drift Ice. When I was looking for a name, I looked up drift ice and Abashiri is the name of the Japanese town that tourists visit every year to look at the drift ice.” Abashiri was one of those ‘nice’ horses. “He reminded me of Yard-Arm. From day one he was a beautifully balanced, athletic horse and a great walker. As a yearling Abashiri was pretty much as he is now – leggy and gangly, but with this wonderful athleticism and balance – if you watch him run, you’ll see how he flattens like a cheetah. At the sales, Mike Azzie kept coming and pulling the horse out. He said he’d always wanted to buy a horse from us, but could never afford one. When the horse went into the ring, Tom Callaghan was talking to Adriaan van Vuuren in one of the cubicles and Mike was frantic trying to get Van Vuuren’s attention. Eventually they managed to get one bid in and the horse was knocked down to them. It’s one of those ‘meant to be’ stories.” “So often when you take horses like him to the sales, you think you’ve got standout on how it looks and walks and then no-one is interested or they go for less than what you expect and you wonder why other people can’t see what you do, particularly as those ones usually end up doing well on the track. I really think if guys know what they’re looking for and do their homework, you can buy horses like Abashiri that are not overpriced. Azzie knew and he kept coming back because he’d seen what he wanted.”

Go Deputy

“Go Deputy was Charles Faull again. He also found him about a year before we bought him and kept going on about this horse. I flew over to look at him at Todd Pletcher’s yard in Florida. We were looking for a stallion to mate Western Winter’s daughters to and thought he matched pretty well.” “He’s a proper horse. He’s by Deputy Minister who was a champion racehorse, champion sire and champion broodmare sire. He’s out of a daughter to Secretariat. He’s a half-brother to Gr1 winners. He himself is a Gr1 winner and three times he was beaten a head and a neck in Gr1 races. And the Gr2 he won was subsequently upgraded to a Gr1. He’s a proper racehorse with a proper pedigree and the looks to match.” “In a way it was almost a pity that Western Winter was such a raging success,” she muses. “Rattray thought we would simply do it again decided not to syndicate any of his subsequent stallions, which made it very difficult and Go Deputy unfortunately lacked support from day one. It’s very sad, because he’s the sort of horse that would be one of our better stallions if he got more mares. His statistics are phenomenal – he’s on 41% winners to runners, which ranks him above sires

like Dynasty and Silvano and his stakes winners to runners is 17%!” “I don’t know whether anyone will suddenly send mares to Go Deputy, but it’s such a shame that a horse of this calibre is being so wasted. His foals are scopey and correct and very easy to work with, although they are late maturing. Go Deputies need to be taught and show improvement with time and patience. There’s unfortunately a perception that he’s a staying horse and that’s not true. They’re certainly not sprinters, but my own filly won from 1000m – 1400m and a lot of them can do a shorter distance. Often when they’re asked to go extended distances they disappoint, but when they’re brought back in trip they win well. I’d describe them more as milers.” When Rattray got serious about his Angus cattle, his interest in the horses seemed to wane a little, but with the farm changing hands to Pieter Graaff at the end of 2014, there is renewed energy, vigour and investment at Lammerskraal. With a resident sire like Go Deputy in the paddock, and Abashiri on the Triple Crown trail, with the passion of Michael Azzie and supportive owners like the Van Vuurens, as Sally says, it sounds like one of those ‘meant to be’ stories.

Meydan Hosts A Cracker

Set For A Super Saturday!

K

Keen Ice, the only horse to have beaten American Pharoah last season, is set to be the star turn on a glittering Super Saturday card at Meydan Racecourse this weekend.

een Ice was entered alongside fellow World Cup a s p i r a n t Mubtaahij in the third round of the Al Maktoum Challenge, while Hong Kong’s Gun Pit, Doug Watson’s Faulkner and Kiaran McLaughlin’s Watershed could also run in the Group 1 contest. With jockey Ryan Moore pencilled in to be aboard British raider Euro Charline in Thursday’s Group 2 Balanchine, The National understands the British rider will get the leg-up on Keen Ice. Keen Ice took advantage of Frosted’s early speed duel with American Pharoah in the Group 1 Travers Stakes to

skip up the inside at Saratoga in August under Javier Castellano. Since that cherished victory, Dale Romans’s son of 2008 Dubai World Cup winner Curlin has finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and filled the same position in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap in November, The four year old was then a lacklustre sixth behind fellow World Cup hopeful Mshawish in the Donn Handicap last month.

SA Duo

The Group 1 Jebel Hatta has also attracted a strong entry with Charlie Appleby’s Tryster out to secure his place on World Cup night against South African duo of Harry’s Son and Ertijaal, who reverts

to turf after a disastrous attempt on dirt a fortnight ago. Elsewhere on the sevenrace card, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Postponed has been entered in the Group 2 Dubai City of Gold with Al Asayl’s Balios in opposition. Headlining the sprints are Rich Tapestry, last month’s impressive Al Shindagha Sprint winner, in the Mahab Al Shimaal and Sole Power, the Al Quoz Sprint winner who clashes with King Stand Stakes victor Goldream in the Meydan Sprint. Polar River, the unbeaten UAE 1,000 Guineas winner, has scared off almost all of the opposition in the UAE Oaks on Thursday. Doug Watson’s filly was entered alongside Mike de Kock’s exciting Argentinean import Vale Dori, who is double entered in the Balanchine. Dolly Dagger and Pure Diamond, the only other entries, also hold other engagements. www.thenational.ae

Chrome posts perfect World Cup prep

California Chrome Shines in Dubai

T

Godolphin’s Safety Check survived a photo finish to become the first horse to win the Group 2 Zabeel Mile twice at Meydan Racecourse on Thursday, while US star, California Chrome cruised to facile victory in his Dubai World Cup prep.

he eighth meeting of the 2016 Dubai World Cup Carnival, sponsored by the Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group, proved a cracker. Dubai World Cup clues were much in evidence with Godolphin’s US raider, Marking throwing down the Dubai Golden Shaheen gauntlet with an impressive performance in his 1200m dirt prep while Doug Watson’s One Man band claimed a fourth victory of the season and looks set for a spot in the Godolphin Mile. The Charlie Appleby-trained Safety Check made Dubai World Cup Carnival history in the featured Group 2 Zabeel Mile under William Buick, winning out in a photo finish over the Ali Rashid Al Raihe-trained Ghaamer. Settled in midfield by Buick, Safety Check always looked to be travelling well and was asked to close early in the straight. With 300m to run, Zahee went to the front, passing long-time leader Ghaamer with Safety Check and Harry’s Son, runner-up in the Al Fahidi Fort, the only pair emerging from the pack. Ultra game, Ghaamer thrust his head back in front 50m from home, only to be headed right on the line by Safety Check. “He just goes so well here and loves to please so always tries hard,” said Appleby. “The 1600m is as far as he wants to go but this lovely flat, turning track and fast ground are what he wants.

He had his doubters, plenty of them, but when push came to shove Designs On Rome rewarded the faithful with a combative second victory in the Gr1 Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup at Sha Tin Racecourse on Sunday. “I’M thrilled. He’s repeated and he’s done it in fine style,” said trainer John Moore, for whom this was an 11th Gold Cup success. “He’s so talented, he’s got to be number one,” asserted Moore. “Of my other Gold Cup winners, Viva Pataca was good, but the way this horse does it, coming from last, right around the field and winning – he’s just an equine champion. He’s very exciting to watch and for that reason I’ll put him on top.” Designs On Rome was three lengths adrift of an otherwise two-by-two field of 11 as stablemate Dan Excel led off the turn into the backstretch. With 800m to race the six-year-old began his trademark advance. Tommy Berry, the first man to execute the long run for home aboard the brilliant and belligerent champion back in 2014, was in the plate for the first time since May of that year. Designs On Rome responded to Berry’s aggressive drive with apparent relish, skirting the field and driving to the fore with 150m to race, boxing past old foe Military Attack and punching on to the wire for a half-length call over stablemate Helene Happy Star, the mount of Joao Moreira. “I always like to get going a little early on him because he stays further than 2000 metres without quite getting a strong 2400,” said Berry, “and I didn’t want to be too far behind Neil Callan on Blazing Speed (race favourite) because if he was able to get away from me I thought we’d be in trouble.” Berry, who replaced Moreira atop the winner, took his record to five wins from eight starts on Designs On Rome. “He feels the same as when I rode him in the past,” said the Australian hoop. “He doesn’t give any sort of feel from the gates, but as soon as I give him a click up at the half-mile he gets going and finds three or four lengths.” The win was the former Horse of the Year’s first since last year’s edition of this 2000m showcase. The Holy Roman Emperor gelding underwent minor arthroscopic surgery to both forelegs last May and a 1000m barrier trial last week, in which the six-year-old broke slowly and never looked like getting close to the principals, did little to restore the confidence of many watchers. Trainer John Moore had no such qualms, though. “He broke slowly in the trial, he was drawn out on the course and he had nothing to run with over 1000 metres. But it did what it needed to do. “Every trainer has their concerns after surgery – I’ve had arthroscopic surgery and I can’t bowl a cricket ball anymore! It’s hard, to think that he may not come back the same horse, but the operation went great, his joints are still tight, we never lost a day with him; it took time to get him back in the coat. “Everyone said his trial wasn’t good enough but I knew exactly where he was, what he’d done, and it was enough to just top him off and he’s returned today the horse he’s been over the past few seasons. He’s the best. “He’s not travelling anywhere,” Moore added. “He’ll go into the AP QEII Cup at the end of April – then we’ll just look after him.” Designs On Rome stopped the clock in 2m 01.51s. Military Attack fought on gamely for third, a half-length behind runner-up Helene Happy Star.

Dirt and the Godolphin Mile were considered, but he deserves a crack at Group 1 company so will go for the Hong Kong Mile next.” Buick claimed a winning treble on the night, also steering the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Marking to his victory and was aboard Dubai debutant, Baccarat, who gave Appleby a double, in the closing Al Naboodah Civil Division Trophy.

California Chrome But all eyes were on the Art Sherman-trained California Chrome in the $150,000 Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy. Giving weight to all his rivals, the USA’s 2014 Horse of the Year and Champion 3yo Male recorded a text-book prep effort under Victor Espinoza. While the finish certainly was easy, Espinoza had to change plans early. After breaking well, California Chrome was backed off the early pace to race in third, behind front runner Success Story and Hunting Ground. Despite conceding weight to all his rivals and racing three wide through the back stretch, California Chrome always appeared to be travelling comfortably. As the field turned for home, California Chrome made his move, drawing level with his rivals. With Success Story and Hunting Ground coming under strong rides from Tadhg O’Shea and Mickael Bazalona, Espinoza eased California Chrome into the lead. Storm Belt and Sam Hitchcott mounted a late challenge, but Chrome drew

away from the field to win by a comfortable 2 lengths. After a successful return to the track in the 9 January Gr2 San Pasqual at Santa Anita, California Chrome arrived in Meydan on 22 January and appears to have settled in well. Explaining that they’d opted for the 2000m handicap on Thursday’s card rather than the 5 March 2016 Super Saturday programme in order to give themselves an extra week before the World Cup meeting, Art Sherman commented, “That was great; it was his second run after a long break so he will improve from it. We decided the best way to win a Dubai World Cup was to come early and have a prep at Meydan and this race was ideal as we now have four weeks before the big one.” California Chrome completed the race in 2:04.24 on a fast track and jockey Victor Espinoza confirmed that the win was as easy as it looked. ““I feel like it was a good race. I think that it was not really hard, but it was still a good solid race for the next one. That was the perfect prep for the Dubai World Cup. He has again showed the track and surface suit him. Hopefully he will be hard to beat in the big race.” Now campaigned by “California Chrome Inc.”, which includes Perry and Denise Martin, Taylor Made, and several prominent breeders, California Chrome is being pointed to the Dubai World Cup on 26 March, where the dual classic winner finished second last year.

Amongst The Winners Teetan Is On Fire

South African champion jockey Gavin Lerena came through his first Hong Kong meeting unscathed last Sunday. While he only managed a fourth from five rides, he feels that once he gets to know the form things will be a lot better.

A

ccording to reports by his Dad Tex, Gavin, his wife Vikki and son Ashton have all settled in well. “They are staying in an apartment in Sha Tin overlooking the racecourse and which is provided by the HKJC. The lifestyle is excellent, but he admits the weather is colder than he expected, so that caught him by surprise,” said Tex. Andrew Hawkins wrote on the South China Morning Post that the South African ace created a big impression in December, and he hopes that he can relocate to Hong Kong on a permanent basis. Longines International Jockeys’ Championship winner Gavin Lerena hopes that a two-month stint in Hong Kong, which starts on Sunday, will lead to a fulltime contract and the chance to emulate some of his childhood idols. The South African jockey, who defeated some of the world’s best riders when taking the Happy Valley series during international week in December, returned to Sha Tin on Tuesday

with his family in tow as he looks to build on that career-making success - and he couldn’t have been more clear about his goals for the stint. “I definitely want to base myself here full-time,” the 30-year-old said. “But to do that, you need a base here. You need support and to build up relationships. I will be out to try and do that.” “Growing up, some of my heroes were successful here, in particular Bartie Leisher. South African jockeys do well here look at Felix Coetzee, Anthony Delpech, the Marcus brothers and of course Douglas Whyte. Hopefully, I can join them - I’m here to ride winners.” Lerena has already forged a reputation as one of his country’s best riders, winning nine Group One races and breaking records before adding his first championship last year, but the jockey says that his IJC win remains his career highlight. “December was special,” he said. “I’d never ridden at a venue like Happy Valley - it was a fantastic experience in front of an exciting crowd. I can’t wait to be doing it each week.”

T

While Gavin Lerena is only just finding his feet, a former colleague is setting Hong Kong alight. Mauritian-born Karis Teetan rode his first four-timer at Sha Tin last Wednesday and then booted Marvel Hero home in the tenth race on Sunday.

he 25 year old Teetan has come a long way since riding his first winner, a horse called Step With Style, for trainer Paul Lafferty at Scottsville in 2005. He was, like Lerena, SA Champion apprentice and rode five Gr1 winners here , including Jackson in the Cape Derby and Thunder Dance in the Paddock Stakes, during his formative years after graduating from the SA Jockey Academy. His sizzling Wednesday four-timer included Mr Stunning for John Size, Horse Of Fortune for Tony Millard, Excel Oneself for Y S Tsui and Packing Dragon saddled by P F Yui. Sunday’s win was the 33rd of the season for Karis, who is in fourth position on the local jockey table and three behind third-placed , Brett Prebble. He rode 50 winners from 583 mounts to finish fourth on the 2013/2014 log – an exceptional achievement in a highly pressurized environment featuring some of the best jockeys in the world. As a natural lightweight (51kg) he gets plenty of opportunities, but there is also intense competition for rides given the massive stakes on offer. Teetan uses a simple counting method to monitor pace and gets rigorous practice when riding work under intense scrutiny from expert trainers and official clockers. “You can’t be even a second out,” he explained. Eventually, the sense of pace becomes inbuilt, but until reaching that stage Teetan goes through a precise and conscious per second countdown for each 400m segment. He is totally focussed on improving his riding ability and has an insatiable appetite for winning, with even lowly events providing great reinforcement. He has also made some technical adjustments to his seat and is now riding six holes longer. “The legs really should not move, and I would rather be comfortable by getting the drive and forward momentum from my upper body,” he clarified. Last year he was honoured to receive an offer to ride in Japan, but in his typical humble manner considered it slightly premature and has continued to build his reputation in Hong Kong.

Triple Crown Legacy Lives On

T

It is hard to imagine, but the likes of Citation (Bull Lea), American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile), and Saturday’s G2 Betting World Gauteng Guineas hero Abashiri (Go Deputy) all carry the name of one of history’s greatest broodmares in their pedigrees, writes Sarah Whitelaw.

his is the mighty mare Plucky Liege (Spearmint), who produced four individual sons, who became important stallions and who were subsequently named chef-de race. Citation, winner of the US Triple Crown in 1948 and widely regarded as one of three greatest horses ever to race in North America is a son of five times champion US sire, Bull Lea. The latter, in turn, is a son of Plucky Liege’s son, Bull Dog.

Pharoah

American Pharoah, who recently had his first mare test in foal, is a son of Pioneerof The Nile, who is a great grandson of the hugely influential sire, Fappiano (also male line ancestor of one of North America’s hottest stallions in Candy Ride). G1 Met Handicap winning Fappiano (Mr Prospector) is a direct male line descendant of Plucky Liege, as is Fappiano’s inbred son, Quiet American. The latter has also made a name for himself at stud, with his offspring including dual US classic winning champion

Real Quiet, whose dual G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winning son, Midnight Lute, has since become a highly successful sire. Quiet American is also broodmare sire of champions Saint Liam (Saint Ballado) and Bernardini (A P Indy), with the latter now one of North America’s most prolific sires of G1 horses. Plucky Liege is also the ancestress of G1 Sword Dancer Handicap winner, Go Deputy (Deputy Minister), whose son Abashiri was such an authorative winner of Saturday’s Gauteng Guineas and who looks a natural contender for the South African Triple Crown this season. Interestingly, a number of high class South African performers are also descendants of Plucky Liege, most notably former G1 Vodacom Durban July winner, Hunting Tower (Fort Wood) and the fine broodmare, Mabola Plum, dam of top class fillies Mocachino (Silvano) and Mocha Java (National Assembly).

The Deputy

Abashiri’s well bred sire, Go Deputy (whose 3yos this season also include stakes winner and

New Stallion Off The Mark - PATHFORK

Highlands stallion Pathfork provided a notable highlight on a low-key Durbanville programme on Saturday when producing his first winner. Glen Kotzen saddled the aptly named 2yo filly Corker, who came home powerfully over the 1000m at her second start. ONLY eight runners lined up in the Maiden Juvenile Pate, with Donovan Dillon riding a peach of a race, settling R480 000 National Yearling Sale graduate Corker a few lengths off the heat and setting her alight late for an impressive victory. Bred by Hallmark Thoroughbreds, she had run second on an unsupported debut over the Kenilworth 1000m. Her dam The Party’s On (by Muhtafal) is an unraced full sister to Gr1 sprinter, Let’s Rock ‘N Roll. An Irish Champion TwoYear-Old, Pathfork brings the best of American pedigrees, strengthened through Sadler’s Wells’ influence in Europe and one of the best sire producing lines available, to mares in

South Africa. Pathfork was the highest rated 2yo in Ireland in 2010 and one of the top 5 in the world. He was undefeated in 3 races as a juvenile with an official Timeform Rating of 120. He broke his maiden in July by 4 lengths easing up over 1400m. His 2nd start In August took him to the Gr2 Galileo Futurity Stakes which he won by 1½ lengths (also over 1400m). He went back to the Curragh a month later with yet another step up in class to win the Gr1 Vincent O’Brien Stakes. After an unsuccessful tilt at the Guineas, he was sent to the USA to be prepared for the Breeders Cup. He didn’t suit the style of training or the

racing surface in America and the decision was taken to retire him. Pathfork hails from one of the top Niarchos families known for precocity and soundness. He is by twice US Champion Sire Distorted Humour, a sire of Champions, including Mauritzfontein’s Flower Alley – sire of Kentucky Derby & Preakness Stakes winner. His dam is a 3-part sister to Spinning World (TFR 130 – sire of Gr1’s in UK & Australasia) and Sagara (TFR 124). This is the sire producing female line of Redoute’s Choice, El Gran Senor, Northern Guest, etc. Pathfork stands at Highlands Stud for a 2015 fee of R10 000.

recent G3 Vasco Prix Du Cap runner up, Flying Ice, as well as the promising pair of Rap Attack and Welsh Emperor) is himself a half brother to multiple G1 winner Dare And Go (Alydar), who ended the mighty Cigar’s winning streak when victorious in the G1 Pacific Classic of 1996. The pair trace back to Plucky Liege through Acorn Stakes winner Hostility (a granddaughter of Plucky Liege through her daughter Marguerite De Valois). While a number of outstanding sires and producers are descendants of Plucky Liege herself, few, if any, can match their ancestor’s truly remarkable record at stud. The mare, who was born in 1912, had four sons that were official champion sires/and or champion broodmare sires. Plucky Liege’s tally included Epsom Derby winner Bois Roussel (Vatout) and French 2000 Guineas winner, Sir Gallahad III (Teddy), as well as the latter’s own brother, Bull Dog. Remarkably all three subsequently became champion sires and broodmare sires.

Triple Crown History

The Triple Crown connection to Plucky Liege is indeed a strong one –not only is Bull Dog grandsire of Triple Crown winner and champion Citation, but Sir Gallahad III is the sire of 1930 Triple

Crown winner Gallant Fox, whose son Omaha won the US Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes) in 1935. To date, Gallant Fox is the only US Triple Crown winner to sire a US Triple Crown winner. His sire, Sir Gallahad III, was also a superb broodmare sire, and ranks as one of the finest damsires of the 20th century – he headed the US Broodmare Sires List on no fewer than 11 occasions, and his brother Bull Dog was top broodmare sire three times. Sir Gallahad III’s numerous high class daughters included Escutcheon (ancestress of such stars as Aptitude, Coastal, Free Eagle, Slew O Gold, Sleepytime and Trusted Partner), Betty Derr (ancestress of Arch, Bayern, Green Desert and California Chrome), Double Time (ancestress of Harlan’s Holiday, Boldnesian, Cryptoclearance, Equiano, Princessnesian, and Revidere), Vagrancy (ancestress of Dark Lomond, Natashka, Anees and Elusive Quality) and Marguery (ancestress of Generous, Imagine, Treve, Triptych, Tamarisk, and Moonlight Cloud). He was also broodmare sire of the champions Gallorette (Challenger II) and Challedon (Challenger II), with the latter North America’s Horse Of The Year in both 1939 and 1940.

Classic Winners

Their half brother, Bois Roussel, whose progeny included seven times champion Japanese sire and Irish Derby winner, Hindostan, made his mark as a broodmare sire of classic winners Petite Etoile and St Paddy (Aureole), among others. Yet another leading sire son of Plucky Liege’s was Grand Prix de Paris winner, Admiral Drake (Craig An Eran), who was top sire in France in 1955. Admiral Drake, whose offspring included Epsom Derby winner Phil Drake and French 2000 Guineas winner, Amour Drake) left behind a truly outstanding daughter in Source Sucree, who produced the breed shaping sire Turn-To (Royal Charger) and who is ancestress of champion miler and leading sire and broodmare sire, Irish River (Riverman) as well as G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Cardmania (Cox’s Ridge). Source Sucree is also the ancestress of local Horse Of The Year and outstanding sire Dynasty (Fort Wood). Truly, this is a phenomenal record for any mare, and Plucky Liege’s influence today can still be felt through the deeds of the numerous high class performers to have emerged from the Fappiano male line.

A review of the week's best SPEEDRATINGS

Worthy King

Greyville 21st February This was the meeting originally scheduled to take place at Scottsville. They raced on the poly track on Sunday afternoon where the fastest of the three maiden events over 1000m was the first division won by the only female in the race GIRL GONE WILD. Priced up as the favourite in the morning (15/10 out to 5/2), Michael Roberts’ charge was soon at the head of affairs. She was two lengths clear for most of the journey and although SEATTLE LIGHT ran on strongly in the closing stages of the race, she still had a length and a quarter to spare at the wire. The faster of the two 2000m races on the card (the maiden 2000m had been originally scheduled for 2400m) was the non-black type umThombothi Stakes (in real terms, a MR96 Handicap) in which the 6yo SERISSA registered his fifth career victory. Another to lead from pillar to post, Sean Tarry’s charge raced two and a quarter lengths to the good and didn’t surrender an inch of his advantage on the run to the line. Sharing top billing was the non-black type Fever Tree Handicap over 1400m and here victory went to the well supported 2/1 favourite DIAMOND KING. He lost three lengths when the gates opened and very quickly found himself positioned at the back. Producing his usual turn of foot when given rein though, the More Than Ready gelding quickened best of all and in a blanket finish he got up late to score by a half. TITBITS After racing handy the 3yo PREMIER CHANCE won the maiden plate over 2000m going away by five and three quarters.

Steeplechase Margins Fairview 22nd February They also raced on the poly on Monday where the faster of the opening two maiden plates over 1200m was the boy’s affair won by SPORTSTRADER. Sent off second in the betting market at 3/1, the son of Fort Wood raced fifth of the eight for most of the journey. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m marker and comfortably accounted for LEGO HOUSE by a length and a quarter. The faster of the two 1900m races was the bill topping MR92 Handicap in which SENSUOUS SALLY gained her fifth career victory. Content to amble along in the rear for most of the journey, Alan Greeff’s charge quickened best of all at the top of the short home straight, and won going away by two and three quarters. Even easier a winner was her stable companion RHUMBA MAGIC in the maiden plate over 2200m. Always handy, the 3yo son of King’s Chapel put his head in front at the top of the straight and cruised clear over the final 400m to score by seven and three quarters. TITBITS Never a threat to the winner, VERLAINE made up lengths in the straight when sixth beaten 1,7 in the MR63 Handicap over 1000m.

Vaal 23rd February The best bet on the card for many at Tuesday’s outside track meeting was JANOOBI in the boy’s division of the maiden juvenile plate over 1100m, and in doing the business he couldn’t have been more impressive. Taken straight to the front by Anton Marcus the son of Silvano led throughout. He began to assert his authority 250m from home and cruised clear in the closing stages of the race to score by seven. Another to win in impressive fashion on this card was CAPTAIN’S CAUSEWAY in the MR78 Handicap over 1200m. In the rear early on, Sean Tarry’s charge was still five lengths adrift of the leaders going through the 400m. He quickened in good style at that point though, and with a ton in hand won going away by a length. Six of the afternoon’s nine races were run over 1200m and stopping the clock in fastest time amongst these was JO MALONE in the MR91 affair. Another to lead throughout, the daughter of Tiger Ridge quickened TOP SPEED RATINGS nicely at the business end for this WEEKEND of the race and won fair (Ratings shown have already been and square by a length and adjusted to allocated weights) a quarter. TITBITS FAIRVIEW (FRI) After being a little slow into stride, the newcomer Kahula ran on well from the rear when winning the girl’s division of the maiden juvenile plate over 1100m going away.

Durbanville 24th February blanket finish he got the verdict by a half over the easy to back CAVALLINO. Race four on the card was a maiden plate over 1400m and here it was nice to see the 4yo RAVISHING LAD finally open his account. Having his twenty third start in the maiden ranks here, the son of Ravishing was taken straight to the front by Aldo Domeyer and led throughout. He was always a couple of lengths clear and won without any anxious moments. TITBITS Running on stoutly from the rear in the MR76 Handicap over 2000m, PIRANGI had to switch 250m out and only failed to reel in the well supported GOOD GRACE (led 150m) by the narrowest of margins.

Due to an electrical storm and a rain affected track, this meeting was abandoned after the running of race two. A work rider’s maiden plate over 1600m got proceedings underway and in what proved to be a real thriller victory here went to the 3yo CAMBRIDGE CHOIR. Usually one to run on stoutly from off the pace, Devin Little’s charge was always handy here. She put her head in front as they approached the 200m marker and found extra over the final 100m to fend off a determined challenge from ROSE OF CASTILLE by a neck.

Two To Follow

Pillar To Post The action in Cape Town on Wednesday took place on the country course where the faster of the two 1600m races was the MR70 Handicap won by KILRAIN. Freely available at 6/1 on the off, Mike Bass’ charge was soon at the head of affairs. He raced a length and a half clear for most of the journey and extended that advantage to two and three quarters over the final 300m. Three of the afternoon’s eight races were run over 1400m and quickest against the clock here was CATKIN when successful in the feature event, a MR86 Handicap. The field was always tightly bunched and racing in sixth, the top weight was perfectly placed to challenge. He ran on strongly in the straight and in a

A MR86 Handicap over the same distance proved to be the not so lucky last, and in a time over 2,5 seconds faster than that of Cambridge Choir FAH FEE registered his fourth career victory. Another to race handy, Ormond Ferraris’ charge was ridden to lead 150m out and kept on strongly below the distance to hold off the rallying favourite BULLETING HOME (led 200m) by less than a half. TITBITS BIRD ALLEY in race 4 and MOD BARLEY in race 8 both found good market support prior to the abandonment of this meeting.
