YES, WE ALL KNOW ABOUT RABADA He was the only colt of his generation to win Group Ones at both two and three. But his dad Brave Tin Soldier is no one-trick pony. Sean Tarry has his highly-regarded Fieldmarshal Fenix while Geoff Woodruff scored with the promising Private Swarovski. Toss in The Poet’s blistering finish at Scottsville for Trevor Denman and Mark Dixon as well as Brave Option for Alan Greeff, and you’ve got the whole package.

Maleficient beat Querari Falcon by three lengths at level weights as a 2yo. She has consistently reproduced her rating from that race and looks a good thing.

Gr3 THREE TROIKAS STAKES at Turffontein on Saturday
H
ere’s an evaluation of the race based on Sporting Post’s ratings, the 3yo fillies listed in card order.
Last Chirp has quite consistent form, running to her best rating three times in her last five starts. She often races with the pace and is drawn well for that purpose at one. Good place chance on normal form. Babbling Brooke’s last run was career-best rating. She usually races over 1600m, but shorter distance might well suit the Western Winter filly. On best rating she has a big chance. Al Hawraa’s last (winning) run produced a career-best rating. She looks distance suited. Has a widish draw, but normally races from behind. Rated on a par with Last Chirp, both having good place chances. Pool Party’s last run was a winning effort over 1400m, close to best rating. She is drawn wide, but is effective from off the pace (as well as with it). Looks to have a bit to do here.
1 Athina 2 Close The Gap 3 Winter Star
Anna Pavlova is on a hattrick, showing improved ratings at her last two starts. She might still be able to improve further on her rating, but has a tough task here. Maleficient (named after the main villain in Walt Disney’s 1959 movie Sleeping Beauty) is lightly raced, highly tried, showing quite consistent ratings. She looks to have a big chance (top rated) if those ratings are reproduced. This could well be a fairytale ending for the Mistress Of All Evil. Zaakhira often races handy, and tries blinkers again. She was supported at her last start (without blinkers), but ran well below normal rating. Often supported and might well be better than her rating suggests, in which case she has a chance. Visuality ran two topclass ratings as a 2yo in sprints, but hasn’t reproduced those as a 3yo (she would be top rated here if she could). Her last four runs were in the Cape during the season, and rather a mixed bag. Frustrating to follow, but not one to ignore.

Gr3 TONY RUFFEL STAKES at Turffontein on Saturday
A
small but quality field of 3yo’s will face the starter. The Highveld Season gets into top gear with the running of the Gr2 Gauteng Guineas on 4 March and there will be many with aspirations to go on and make a name for themselves.
The Tony Ruffel Stakes is restricted to 3yo’s and two time winners and less are set 53kgs. Thereafter, a premium of 2 kg for each additional win is applied but the gross weight is not to exceed 57 kgs for C & G & 54,5 kg for Fillies In addition, further penalties accrue to the tune of 3kgs for a Gr1 win, 2kgs for a Gr2 success and 1kg for a Gr3 win. Fillies – of which there is only one in the shape of De Kock’s Ektifaa - get a 2,5 kg allowance. Sean Tarry and S’manga Khumalo ended the Cape summer with a flourish and it is hardly surprising to see them teaming up with the SP top-rated Matador Man.
Remembering Mr Ruffel Saturday’s Turfontein feature is named in honour of the late Tony Ruffel, one of the great old school racing administrators of years gone by. Mr Ruffel was a former Steward, Chairman of the Transvaal Owners and Trainers Association, as well as a Chairman of the National Federation of Owners and Trainers(NATFED). He was appointed Chairman of the then Jockey Club of SA in 1981. His wife Joan made history when becoming the first female Steward in our history when elected to the board of the Newmarket Turf Club.

She has 2016 been disappointing since over a 1 Madame Dubois 59.0 ( 2) 8/1 2 Negroamaro 59.0 (12) 7/2 variety of distances, being held 3 Juxtapose 58.0 ( 5) 45/1 up. Her last effort was the best of her last four runs and she could be getting back in form. Drawn widest of all, but on best form in with a chance. Rouge Allure returned to sprinting at last start, running well below normal rating. This distance suits better. Drawn wide, but seems effective from off the pace (as well as with it). Has a bit to do. Elusive Strike is very lightly raced, and improved on her rating with every run. She might well improve further, but has a bit to find in this company. Triple Digit made a winning debut racing handy, but hasn’t been able to reproduce her winning rating in four starts since, racing from behind. Needs to improve to have a chance.
A Maiden Over The Gauteng classic picture could become a little clearer after the running of Saturday’s R250 000 Gr3 Tony Ruffel Stakes over the Turffontein inside track 1450m.

The son of Toreador caught the eye with an excellent post maiden score in the Listed Secretariat Stakes when coming on late to beat stablemate Tilbury Fort (in receipt of 3,5kgs) going away by 1,75 lengths. He gets 3kgs from Doosra and is expected to put in a big effort over the 50m further.
Just Cricket Doosra carries top weight and his connections will be keen to see the Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes winner back on the feature honour roll. The son of Captain Al did not appear to stay the mile when a 5,35 lengths fourth behind Singapore Sling in the Dingaans, but looks to be over his optimal trip here. He is a kilo better off with Ready To Run Cup winner Chili Con Carne for a five length beating last time out in a small field. Gavin Lerena has been vocal about Doosra’s real ability and we can expect a major run on Saturday – and the inside track could be right up his street.
Hot Stuff The big earner Chili Con Carne gets a good draw and the services of Piere Stydom again.
The son of Just As Well has won 3 from 11 and appears to be getting better with every run. The Mike de Kock coupling of Ektifaa and Al Fahad must both have a decent chance at best. Choice Carriers Championship winner Ektifaa is the only female in the race and comes in off a 15 week break following her gutsy Cape feature win. That was her third win on the trot and while few of those behind her went on to great things in the summer, she has shown a touch of class and cannot be ignored. Stablemate Al Fahad has had one outing since running a very decent 4,15 length fifth to Sun Met placer Gold Standard in the Selangor Cup. He then ran fourth and 5,55 lengths behind Orchid Island in the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes when looking to be in need of the run and could enjoy this job in trip.

JP van der Merwe keeps Mister Matchett at his task as Laws Of Succession (Lyle Hewitson) ran a close up third
The 2016 Dubai World Cup runnerup Mubtaahij will not have to face California Chrome in the 2017 renewal of the third richest race in the world at the end of March.
T FAIRVIEW MILE at Fairview on Friday
J
The 6yo Mister Matchett bounced back to winning ways and registered his first victory in 20 months when staying on well to win the R110 000 Fairview Mile at Fairview on Friday.
ockey JP van der Merwe takes his fair share of flak but is up with the best of his year when on song and produced a finely judged display of pace riding for Gavin Smith when holding a good advantage under his handy galloping weight all the way to the line. The lull after the high of the Sun Met weekend was tangible – this non black type contest
being the only feature on a thin national weekend programme. The handicap looked tricky but the classy Cape and KZN winner It Is Written was expected to come back to his best since his switch of stables and looked to have the class edge. But it was to be the biggest longshot in the ten horse field that would deliver the goods. JP van Der Merwe, who won the Sophomore Plate earlier in the day on the promising Soar
With Eagles gelding Story Of My Life, rode a confident race, and had Mister Matchett up with the fire all the way. At the 250m marker the pair looked to be under severe pressure but kept their heads down and were oblivious of the storming late run from almost last by Welsh Emperor on the outside. Into the final 100m Mister Matchett was being hailed a winner and he stayed on well to hold the flying Welsh Emperor by 0,25 lengths in a time of 96,44 secs. It was his first win over a mile. The runner-up’s momentum made the winning margin look a lot tighter than it really was. Laws Of Succession loomed dangerously late and was a
short head away in third. Eternal Jet maintained his recent improvement to run fourth. The favourite It Is Written had every chance but failed to quicken and was well beaten into sixth. Mister Matchett, who races in the blue and silver grey of Hassen Adams, was bred by Dieu Farm and is a 6yo gelded son of Badger’s Drift out of the ten-time winning Comic Blush mare, Shake Baby Shake. He took his stakes earnings to R437 075 at his seventh win with 11 places from 41 starts. Mister Matchett’s win contributed in no small measure to the part Pick 6 carryover on the afternoon.
he son of Dubawi finished just over three lengths behind the US champion and two-time Horse Of The Year last year. California Chrome has retired to take up stallion duties at Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Kentucky. Mike De Kock, who trained a good winner in former SA based Sanshaawes at Meydan last Thursday, is back in charge of the globetrotting 5yo Mubtaahij and is likely to give the son of Dubawi a run at Meydan this month in advance of his end of March date. De Kock has yet to win Dubai’s showpiece race since it was inaugurated in 1996, but the ante-post market suggests he will have a strong chance of ending that wait this year. Arrogate is favourite in some lists but is not considered a likely runner at this stage. Mubtaahij has been mixing it with some of the best horses in the world for two years now. The biggest win of his career so far came at the 2015 World Cup meeting, when he landed the UAE Derby in spectacular style. The winning margin was eight lengths, which left many pundits tipping him up for success in the 2016 Dubai World Cup. His next run was in the Kentucky Derby, when he finished eight of 18 to American Pharoah. He was then fourth in the Belmont Stakes when Pharoah completed his Triple Crown. After his runner-up finish at Meydan last year, Mubtaahij transferred to U.S. trainer Kiaran McLaughlin for an American campaign. He ran third in the Gr2 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park in July, then was beaten by a head by Shaman Ghost (who was second to Arrogate in the Pegasus last Saturday) in a four-way photo for the Gr1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga in September. Back at Belmont in October, he was a disappointing fourth in the Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes behind Hoppertunity, who had finished third in the Dubai World Cup.
PROGRESS
Reinventing The Wheel After the Pegasus World Cup in the USA last month, now Australian racing has jumped on the big prize money bandwagon.
T
he Everest, with prize money of A$10 million is the richest 1200m race in the world and also the richest turf race. It will be run at weight-for-age at Royal Randwick on 14 October 2017 and thereafter on the second Saturday of October each year. The Everest will be unique in Australian racing in that the race will be open to local and international buyers to purchase a place (slot) in the race at A$600.000. It is just this sort of progressive thinking that can reinvigorate a sport and bring new fans into the arena – just as 20/20 cricket has done for that sport. Australia’s Racenet sourced two hard-headed racing journalists, Steve Moran and Ben Dorries, known for their ability to think outside the square, and also passionate racing fans who want the best for the future of the industry. Dorries said that it wasn't long ago that Australian cricket was on its knees, struggling for relevance as turnstiles stopped clicking, TV ratings dropped off and fans vanished at an alarming rate. Cricket is now back with a bang thanks to the Twenty20 Big Bash
bonanza, with the game buzzing and rivers of gold flowing through Aussie cricket. Meanwhile, racing remains stagnant and largely stuck in the dark ages. What attraction is there for kids and women and the next generation to go to the races, or even switch them on the telly on a Saturday afternoon? Racing must be attractive to families - not just to rich, fat middle-aged men and old-timers. The racing aficionados will always have a bet on Saturday – and they might occasionally venture out to a racetrack somewhere - but that won't secure the future of the code. It must attract a fresh audience. Moran suggested it’s time for the Big Bash to come to horse racing. As the immensely popular 20-20 cricket competition has come to a close, it's timely to look at what sort of similar product we could apply to racing. The success of this domestic T-20 challenge which consistently outrated the Australian Open tennis is a further reminder that while the AFL, NRL and cricket have virtually reinvented themselves over the past 20 years - racing has sat on its collective arse and changed very little.
Moran said it raises three questions. 1. Why has the Big Bash worked and could it work in racing? 2. Do we need to change the way race meetings are conducted? 3. Do we need to change the way we present it on television? Dorries said that the cricket purists laughed at the concept of a three-hour splash and dash cricket contest but the country has fallen in love with the Big Bash. It's a bit like MasterChef. You don't have to watch every minute but you keep being seduced back to the TV. Clearly, the races need to be closer together with much less of a time gap. People want to have pre-drinks or dinner before going out and plenty more drinks while they are out. Moran said he felt the Big Bash has worked because it's quick - all done in two and a half to three hours which, coincidentally, is about the same time as a footy/rugby match or a major race meeting in Europe. It's exciting and family friendly and the commentary is chiefly provided by recently retired players with hosts who are not trying to take over the show. Time is no issue. What's wrong with a six or seven race card 30 minutes (or less) apart? In February kids are home from school by four and it's daylight saving. Go from four until seven or five to eight. Capture an after-work crowd, both
on-course and at the pubs/clubs. Or mum and dad can unwind with a drink and take the kids to the races for a couple of hours. All done, home at a reasonable hour. Or do we pitch some meetings at the younger crowd. Cocktail racing five to eight? Dorries said that one of the main reasons the Big Bash works so well is commentators like Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist are great characters who have the flair and the freedom to entertain. How refreshing would it be for a straight-talking type like Lee Freedman, Gai Waterhouse or Mick Price to co-host a meeting and speak their mind on the quality of horses and things like jockey tactics. Or even a pro punter offering his insights? He suggested they try something different rather than much of the bland, wall-to-wall racing commentary gibberish that we currently endure. Let's not stop there though. Much more innovative thinking is needed. Let's continue to speed things up in the stewards room by letting the stipes alone decide protests. Evidence from trainers and jockeys is largely irrelevant so let the stewards decide. Move on quickly. What about a race meeting with a succession of rapid-fire two-horse races, pitting the cream of the crop against each other? Sound silly? No more silly than the hit-and-giggle 20-over cricket
games which are the talk of the country. Perhaps run individual 1000m time trials between races which forms another race. One horse against the clock. The result and then dividends then simply determined by the times recorded. Or is it two horses racing against each other and the clock with the top two jockeys, at that stage of the season, riding each of them? Or something novel - a six horse 800m - 1000m challenge with all runners having a vacant stall outside them to reduce the prospect of any early interference. Have heats open to runners from all states. Have a final in each state (NSW and VIC), state versus state, with the six fastest short course horses in the country. Have class record time bonuses to assist in eliminating a lot of our ugly stop-start races. Staying races with a staggered flag or strand start so the handicap is visual, not the intangible weight factor. Could the barrier draw be the handicap? – Highest rated runners draw out. Could we have two banks of stalls with a separate starting mechanism and the bottom six rated runners get a half second or second start over the top six. On the betting front, let's provide some easier bet types. Most bet options are quite daunting for first timers who wouldn't know a quadrella from a quinella. Finally, plonk some more family friendly options on racetracks, like jumping castle for kids, and spruce up the experience for females by replacing pie vans with sushi stations.

It will be 3 years in August since I last rode a horse. I’ve kept myself involved in that I’ve been watching racing all the time. of days getting to know everybody and get into the rhythm of things. That is something I’m going to have to get my head around and work on as that will be a whole new role for me, but it’s exciting to buy the race card or read the Sporting Post and think ‘wow, there’s a Silvano or a Querari or one of our foals’. You see things in a whole new light.” “It is a bit daunting, but the more I’m getting involved, the more I’m enjoying it. It’s not a hard job and the nice thing is that it’s part time, so I’ve still got time for myself and my family and if I have time and want to explore other things, Andreas has given me full permission to branch out. I’ll mostly be working from home which is great as I’ve worked out in the open all my life, so I don’t want to wake up and go to an office! I’ll still do a bit of travelling to represent Maine Chance at sales or any of the big races if Andreas can’t be there.” “I’ve got a lot to learn, but Justin’s been very helpful in that regard and I wish him huge success going forward. He’s a youngster and he’s got go in him and is looking to broaden his horizons with his Green Street Bloodstock business and good luck to him.” “I officially started on 1 February, but straight after the announcement was made, I already had trainers sms’ing me and telling me race results and it’s lovely to be able to communicate with them like that. I’ve had quite a few people ringing up to say best of luck and that they’re looking forward to dealing with me and it’s nice to have been accepted like that. It was so great to be at the course on Met day. I got comments from a lot of trainers and owners and respected people in the industry, boosting me and giving me a lot of confidence and all happy to know that I’m back in the game and working for a top farm like Maine Chance.” “It’s exciting times, but I’ve got a goal to go for now and that’s the exciting thing.”

Trainer Mike de Kock is just 7 winners away from the magical 3000 winner milestone. His last local winner was Belle Rose at Turffontein on Sun Met Day, while Sanshaawes won last Thursday at Meydan. Like all countdowns, things seem to drag in the home stretch!
After the bus no-show debacle which led to last Monday’s Flamingo Park meet being abandoned, there was more stress for the hard-hit locals when Sunday’s substitute meeting was washed out. In an unprecedented move, entries for coming Monday’s 13 February programme were re-opened only for those who were due to run in Sunday’s wash-out. This showed enterprise and a softening by the racing operator - but sadly no apologies or explanations have ever been tendered for the bus.

A flat domestic racing industry had a disappointing effect on the New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale and the overall negative impact was even more evident when looking at the Premier and Select sessions from last week combined. So said NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook after over $6.5 million less had been spent by domestic buyers who have historically underpinned the middle market. The median price of $40,000 was a 16% drop on last year’s figure of $47,500. In the Select Sale international buyers accounted for 42% of the horses bought, spending $10.8 million (52% of the sale’s aggregate) while domestic buyers secured 252 horses for $9.86 million (48% of the sale’s aggregate).
Blowing Hard
Racing Association CEO Larry Wainstein has pointed out that it is the RA that governs all stake money paid to owners and it is them that foot the bill. When the decision was made to double the stakes for the Sun Met from R2.5 million to R5 million and to boost the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate from R1-million to R1.5 million it was the RA that had to find the money. “That money does not come from the sponsors. When a request was made to up the stakes on those races the guys came to me to see if we could afford it. I’m not trying to blow our own trumpet but I regularly get questioned by RA members who feel we don’t do enough for them. I just believe there is a need to set the record straight.”

Sex Claim
A new rule in France allowing horses with female jockeys to carry less weight has been labelled ‘unfair’, ‘offensive’ and ‘patronising’. Governing body France Galop will allow 2kg (4.4lbs) less in the saddle to encourage the use of female riders. Gr1-winning jockey Hayley Turner wants ‘more subtle’ help, adding: “It seems a bit unfair on the lads.”
Sue Martin is living proof that ‘age is but a number’, as the 62-year-old great-grandmother rode a winner at Tampa Bay Downs last Sunday. Martin, who will turn 63 soon, is married to trainer Wayne Martin, who saddled 5yo Blue Haze Of Fire who scored for the first time in a claimer. The winner was Martin’s first success since 2014. However she rode her first winner over 40 years ago in 1974, having started riding a year earlier. She has 7 children, 18 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, and as a devout Christian, credits her longevity to God. She added: “I’ve broken every bone in my body, I have a titanium leg and I have a plate and screws in my arm. I just follow the lead of the Lord and try to be obedient.”

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 10th - SUNDAY 12th FEBRUARY 2017

Reach For The
A Chat with Skye Gilbert They say there are many ways to skin a cat. As it turns out, there are many ways to become a jockey too. hile the SA Jockey Academy is the traditional tried and tested route for local aspirants, there are a few other options for those brave enough to explore them. Someone who has made it happen, is Skye Gilbert, who had her first race under rules at Scottsville on Wednesday, 1 February 2017, piloting Just Rap for Des Egdes in race 6 on the afternoon’s card. She rode an accomplished race to finish 4.2 lengths off. Skye is the daughter of well-known KZN show-jumper and eventer, Kim Egdes (now married to KZN trainer Des Egdes) and Cape farrier, Ford Wallace. Having grown up with a strong horsey background, Skye says she always wanted to be a jockey, but couldn’t get into the SA Jockey Academy as she wasn’t quite small enough and because her parents wanted her to finish her education first. After school, she took a gap year and went to England, basing herself with her aunt in Newmarket. She applied for and got a work rider job with Marco Botti, working for him for 8 months before going to work on a private stud for a year.
Being in the right place at the right time “A friend of mine is the head lass at Ed Dunlop’s yard and said they were looking for staff. I went on a trial and got the job!” Skye moved to Ed Dunlop about a year and a half ago and in her own words, ‘just started doing more and more.” She eventually approached him about taking out her apprentice license. “It works differently there. The trainer needs to apply for you through his yard and then he’s
responsible for you. I went on the course and then my license came through in November. I have an unrestricted license there, not like here where an apprentice has to have their first rides down the straight.”
Becoming a jockey As someone who harbored similar ambitions many years (and quite a few kilo’s) ago, it’s difficult not to be slightly envious. How did she do it? “The SA Academy requires you to be 45kgs or less to get in, which just wasn’t possible for me and if you want to finish your education first as I did, that also makes things tricky. I had given up on the idea completely and didn’t think there was any chance of making it, but it works quite differently in England. You need to get experience and learn to work with horses before you apply. Then you need a trainer that’s willing to apply and go through the process for you which is also tricky. And you have to be under the age of 23 to apply. I turned 24 last week, so I got in just in time.” Having gained sufficient experience, aspirant candidates then need to attend an apprentice license course. “It’s a course to assess you fitnesswise and riding-wise. You jump through the stalls and ride work on different kinds of horses with different temperaments. They also test you on the rules of racing, so you have to know every side of it. Then they either grant you your license or a restricted license, depending on your assessment.” Skye completed her course through the British Racing School in Newmarket. “You stay on the premises and the course is all sponsored. Your trainers applies on your behalf, so the application fee is paid by the trainer and there is a fund that subsidises the course fee. The course is only held 3 or 4 times a year and they only accept a certain number of people. We had 8 on our intake.”
CANDIESE MARNEWICK
Different focus “Although the main focus is your riding ability, they do ask for your weight and you need to be 8st 3lbs with your kit. I did have to lose some weight to make it, and got to 8st for my weigh in, so I was 8st 3lbs with my riding stuff.” Interestingly, they are less focussed on height. “Joseph O’Brien is quite tall and he was very successful. Being tall just means your career might be short-lived, but you can still do well in that amount of time.” It is interesting to hear her being so matter of fact about it. “People tend to think there are only two options in racing – you’re either a jockey or a trainer (or a jockey
and then a trainer), but there are so many different careers in racing after being a jockey. You can study anything – nutrition, physiotherapy, personal training, become a racing secretary or go into the stud side of things – there are many options.” In fact, there is even a fund (named JETS – Jockeys Employment & Training Scheme) dedicated to helping prepare jockeys for second careers.” Skye explains that similar to the SA system, she will also start out with an apprentice allowance of 7lbs, which she will shed as she accumulates wins and once she reaches 95 wins, she will be considered a professional jockey. “It’s a lot more difficult to get rides and winners there than here. Apprentices are quite lucky here, they do get rides and do get used a lot. It’s a lot more difficult in England, so I’m very lucky to be with Ed Dunlop.”
Daily Routine For now, Skye’s routine is much the same. Work starts at 5:30 and riders are expected to tack up their own horses, walk them to the heath, exercise them, trot them, bring them back, brush and feed every horse they ride. Riding and yard work finishes by around 12 after which it’s home for lunch and then off to the gym at 2pm, where there is an equiciser to practice on. Then it’s back to work for evening stables where horses are skipped out, groomed, fed and watered and that takes them through to 5:30 / 6pm.
year, Josephine Gordon was champion apprentice, so that’s great for us girls.” Is it a career path she would recommend for girls? “I would recommend it if you are very determined. You have to be passionate. It takes a lot of work, fitness, eating well – all your time goes into it – but I think it will be worthwhile to achieve my dream and it’s been an achievement to get this far.” What about the obvious question about family and children? “I would like to have my own family eventually, but for now I want to give it all I have and see where I can go. I think you have to set that limit and reassess in a few years time. You can get a good few years out of it, so I think rather go for it now and have children later on.”
How was her first ride under rules? “I loved it, it was a great experience,” she enthuses. “I couldn’t have had a better ride and I must give a shout out to my step father, Des Egdes for the ride! It was extremely hot and I did a very light weight on the day as well, so I did get tired. I’m quite fit cardio-wise, but race riding is a whole different ballgame and one can only improve your fitness by race riding. But otherwise I think I handled it well. I’m glad to get the first one out of the way! It was good experience and hopefully I can build on that.” How was she received in the jockey room? “The local guys were great and professional, but helpful. Luckily I’ve known most of them since I was young, so they were all really helpful and supportive.”
One of the most striking things about Newmarket is how beautifully all the horses and riders are turned out. Tack is Asked to talk me through the race, spotless, riders all have polished leather Skye says, “We broke quite well. I gave boots and the horses would not look the filly a tap on the shoulder as I knew out of place in a showing class. Each they would be going quite quick. It’s a string works together as a unit and is bit short for her, so I got her settled 3 easily identifiable from or 4 lengths off. Skye to apply for you slightly earlier as there’s a explains, “In summer through his yard bit of a hill coming into the you put quarter marks and then he’s finish at Scottsville and she on every horse you responsible for you. showed a turn of foot and ride. Everyone takes stayed on well. She could do real pride in themselves with further next time, they and their horses and takes a lot of pride were just quite quick for her and it was in their job. Riding is a big part of a strong field.” the industry there and people work “I loved it, I really did. I think it very hard. Being a groom / rider is helped that I was drawn wide as I wasn’t considered a career there.” really in the middle of it and could sit on What is it like living and working the outskirts and think about it. I think I in the racing capital of the world? “I had the best experience for a first time. I cannot handle winter – it’s tough! With think the idea to give apprentices 5 rides the ice and the snow, it’s just so cold down the straight is a really good one. It and I do battle, but other than that, would be overwhelming to go round the it’s great. Everyone gets on really well bend first time out in a full field.” and it’s a great team. Everyone in town Future knows each other and it’s a lot of fun. Skye heads back to the UK on 13 The whole in industry is just racing, February and then it will be straight back racing, racing.” to work. “It will be back to work, get fit The X factor and get back into it. If I can, I’d like to Is there any difference / difficulty start riding out for a few other trainers being a girl? “On my course there were to get more experience and hopefully 4 girls and 4 guys which is great. There get some more rides. We’ll be coming are a lot more women jockeys over there to the end of the all weather season and the numbers are increasing as the so hopefully I can get going when the years go by. We’ve got Hayley Turner turf season starts and hopefully Ed will showing that we can do it and in our support me with a few rides.”

Work Rider’s Day
Captain In Command
Vaal 31st January
All of the runners at Tuesday’s inside track meeting were ridden by work riders. Two maiden plates over 2000m opened up proceedings and by far the quickest of these was the girl’s affair won by SEA BEAN. Always deep in the red, the lightly raced daughter of Philanthropist raced in midfield for most of the journey. She put her head in front shortly after passing the 200m marker and drew clear easily below the distance to score by three and a half. Another to win very comfortably on this card was SNOW IN SEATTLE in the faster of the two 1400m maiden plates. Sent off a clear favourite at 18/10, Barend Botes’ charge was always handy. He was ridden to lead going through the 300m and won going away by three. They also ran two maiden plates over 1000m and stopping the clock in the
fastest time here was CASA DA VAR in the boy’s division. Soon at the head of affairs, the daughter of Var was a length and three quarter clear passing the 400m pole. The always handy newcomer UNCHAINED MELODY ran on strongly in the closing stages of the race, and it was only by a neck that Louis Goosen’s charge got the verdict. TITBITS
Soon up handy, despite taking a bump at the start, the newcomer ANALYSE THAT won the girl’s division of the maiden plate over 1000m going away.

Scottsville 1st February
The fastest of the three 1200m races in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday was the bill topping MR92 Handicap won by JUST VOGUE. Always positioned close to the speed, Gavin Van Zyl’s charge ran on strongly at the business end of the race, and in a thrilling three way finish she only got the verdict by the narrowest of margins. Quickest home in the two 1400m events was MAMBO in the MR62 Handicap. Positioned in midfield in a race where there was a lot of interference in the straight, Duncan Howell’s charge ran on stoutly after taking a bump 300m out, and won well by a half. Third placed TROPICAL’S SON (drawn wide) ran on well from the rear. Two of the four remaining races were maiden plates over 1950m and by far the faster of these was the first division won by TECHNO CAPTAIN. Sent off favourite at 18/10, the

They raced on the outside track on Thursday where by far the fastest of the three 1200m races was the MR80 Handicap won by JUST AS I SAID. Looking to complete a hat-trick here, the Just As Well gelding led throughout. He held a length and a quarter advantage for most of the journey, before drawing clear over the final 300m to score by over three. Quickest home in the three 1400m events was Just As I Said’s stable companion MY FRIEND LEE in the MR68 Handicap. The last of four winners on the card for trainer Lucky Houdalakis, My Friend Lee raced in midfield during the early part of the race. She quickened well 400m out and got up nicely late to deny POLLY WOLLY DOODLE.
The three remaining races were all staged over 1600m and stopping the clock in the fastest time amongst these was another Houdalakis inmate MAN’S INN. Taken straight to the front by Marco Van Rensburg, the son of Grey’s Inn led throughout. He kept on strongly at the business end of the race, and did have the runner up SMARTIFACT held at the wire. The lightly raced 5yo DON CHRISTO was eased late when making it three from ten in the MR66 Handicap over 1200m. Despite being reported as not striding out, the 3yo ARABIAN SEA won the maiden plate over 1400m very comfortably by a length and a half.
Quick Double Greyville 3rd February
As has become the norm Friday evening’s action took place on the poly track. A maiden plate over 1000m got proceedings underway and here we saw a very comfortable victory for the uneasy second favourite APHRODEITY’S RAIN. Allowed to ease right out to 3/1 from 18/10 at the track, the Argonaut filly raced fifth during the early part of the race. She quickened well at the top of the short home straight and after striking the front 150m out, won going away by three and a quarter. Two of the evening’s eight races were run over 1600m and the faster of these was the maiden plate in which MASTER SHOGUN got off the mark. Sent off a well-supported favourite at 6/10 (op even money), Alyson Wright’s charge was soon up handy. She was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m
marker and won well by a length from the running on KASH IS KING. The faster of the two 2000m races was the bill topping MR90 Handicap in which HYAKU registered his sixth victory from just 21 starts. Easy to back at 7/1 on the off, Sean Tarry’s charge was always in touch with the leaders. He ran on strongly in the straight and after getting the better of the front running THIRTYTWO SQUADRON, he fended off a determined challenge from the 18/10 favourite MR WINSOME. TITBITS
The 3yo ORELIA was baulked for a run en-route from midfield before getting up late to shed her maiden tag over 1400m. WAVEBREAKER was always a length clear when completing a quick double over the course and distance in the 1200m Middle Stakes.
3yo son of Captain Al was content to sit in midfield for most of the journey. He was ridden to lead approaching the 300m marker and with the rest well held he comfortably accounted for SHINE UP by three quarters. TITBITS
Well supported into 4/1 from 8’s, MANOUCHE ran on well from midfield when getting off the mark in the maiden plate over 1400m.

A Rose’s Legacy Ashford Stud’s prominent young stallion Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) found himself in the limelight last week when his 3yo son Royal Mo landed the Gr2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita. He is the third stakes winner to emerge from Uncle Mo’s second US crop. His first crop yielded 20 black type winners headed by champion 2yo and Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist (now a sire).
U
ncle Mo, whose stud fee rose from $75k to $150k in 2017, made it a weekend to remember when Man From Uncle won the Gr3 ATC Eskimo Prince Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. A second Australian stakes winner for Uncle Mo, he will be aimed at the Gr1 Randwick Guineas. Champion 2yo Uncle Mo is the top sire in North America by AEI (Average Earnings Index), sporting an impressive AEI of 2.96 and CI (Comparable Index) 1.96. To give perspective, the world’s premier sire Galileo has an AEI of 2.99. Uncle Mo traces back in female line to Cherokee Rose (by Peter Pan), a full sister to Futurity Stakes winner Pennant sire of champion Equipoise. Cherokee Rose won just once from 12 outings, with two thirds in two minor stakes races. At stud she produced champion 2yo filly Rosie O’Grady, a dual SW who ran third to colts in the Futurity. Rosie O’Grady established a thriving dynasty, her
highclass racemare Crimson Saint. The latter is dam of Gr1 stallion Royal Academy and of G1 2yo filly Terlingua, dam of influential stallion Storm Cat

descendants including Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus (Mr Prospector), Gr1 Preakness Stakes winner Pine Bluff (Danzig), South African sires Brave Tin Soldier and Where’s That Tiger, top class sire Icecapade (Nearctic) and legendary filly Ruffian (Reviewer). Another notable descendant of Rosy O’Grady is Intent, whose grandson In Reality became a top

class sire, influential broodmare sire, and sire of sires. Another daughter of Cherokee Rose was Rowes Bud, who won just once in five outings but made up for that at stud. Her offspring include 32-time winner (from 148 outings) Balios (Chicle), Champagne Stakes winner Oh Say (Dis Donc), and Rare Bloom. The latter became dam of First Rose, in turn dam of Bolero Rose, who got
Storm Cat (Storm Bird) was twice champion sire and multiple times champion 2yo sire in the US, and left behind a plethora of Gr1 winners and champions, including Horse Of The Year and triple US champion sire Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy, Harlan, Tale Of The Cat, Stormy Atlantic and Forest Wildcat (sire of Var). Storm Cat’s dam Terlingua is grandam of sire Goldkeeper, sire of Gr1 winners and broodmare sire of Gr1 winning sisters All Is Secret and The Secret Is Out whose dam Secret Of Victoria is inbred to Crimson Saint. Terlingua’s half-brother Royal Academy, who won the Gr1 July Cup and Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, produced more than 160 stakes winners and is broodmare sire of multiple champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill), among others. Interestingly, Cherokee Rose’s descendants Uncle Mo and Storm Cat both appear in the pedigree of champion Nyquist – by Uncle Mo out of a mare by Storm Cat’s son Forestry.
Farewell Carolina Cherry Mauritzfontein suffered a sad loss recently with the passing of their broodmare Carolina Cherry.
Nadeson Park Stud’s stallion Time Thief got his first Graded Stakes winner at Randwick last week, with filly In Her Time in the 1200m Gr2 Breeders Classic. The winner is from Time Thief’s second crop and has now won four from nine starts. Time Thief already had an Australian stakes winner with Volkoff, who won the Miss Andretti S-(L) at Ascot in January. Time Thief was a multiple Gr1 placed sprint/miler in Australia, rated 120 by Timeform. He was runner-up in Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) as a 3yo. His sire Redoute’s Choice, triple champion in Australia, has more than 130 stakes winners to his credit, including Australian sire Snitzel, and in South Africa Gr1 SA Derby winner Wylie Hall (now a stallion) and the imported Musir and Majmu. An A$2 million yearling buy, Time Thief is one of five stakes horses produced by Procrastinate, who is dam and grandam of Graded SW’s. Her daughter Laisserfaire (by Danehill) was South African Champion Sprinter twice. Procrastinate is half sister to the dam of SA stayer Blake (by Dynasty), their dam Reigntane a full sister to Australian champion sire Centaine. Time Thief started his stud-career in Australia and transferred to Nadeson Park in Hermanus in 2015. He stood at a fee of R15k last season.
Bred and owned by Mauritzfontein, Carolina Cherry was born in 1997 and one of two major winners to emerge from the third crop of her champion sire Fort Wood, the other being Horse Of The Year Celtic Grove. Carolina Cherry won first time out over 1000m as a two-year-old, but really came into her own at three. The Mike De Kock trained filly won three times, her biggest victory the Gr2 Gold Circle Oaks. She finished second in the Gr1 Garden Province Stakes and Woolavington Stakes, and retired to stud having won or placed in 14 of 20 outings. At stud her four winning foals included fillies Cherry On The Top and Cherry On The Cake. Equus champion 3yo filly Cherry On The Top (by Tiger Ridge) was trained by Ormond Ferraris, and reeled off wins in the Gauteng Fillies Guineas, SA Fillies Classic and SA Oaks. These races made up South Africa’s fillies Triple crown, the Triple Tiara. Her two-year-older half-sister Cherry On The Cake (by Strike Smartly) was Gr2 placed Gr3 winner. Carolina Cherry’s dam is Home Guard mare Maid Of Castile, who descends from Fleur – ancestress also of Classic Flag, Lady Windermere, Broadway Flyer and National Spirit. Cherry On The Top has a yearling filly by Silvano (named Blossom), Cherry On The Cake a yearling colt by Var (named Maraschino).
