200 000 The highest advertised fee at conception in 2014 of National Sale yearlings by a South African based sire.
That honour belongs to former champion sire Silvano, who stood at R200k in 2014. He has 20 yearlings on offer. Joint second are Dynasty and Captain Al on R150k.
29
The highest number of yearlings at the sale by an established stallion. That is 29 for Varsfontein stallion Judpot, who made a cracking start with his first crop, on the strength of which the current yearlings were conceived. Avontuur’s sire Var is hot on his heels with 28, then comes Dynasty with 24. The current leading sire of 2yo winners Sail From Seattle has 23 on offer - p. 28
21
The highest number of yearlings at the sale by a first-season stallion. That is a dead-heat between Drakenstein stallion Duke Of Marmalade and Varsfontein’s Master Of My Fate, both with 21. The Duke isn’t a first-season stallion in the true sense of the word, as he has winners the world over from his earlier crops at Coolmore – this is his first local crop.
4 750 000 Highest-priced lot ever at the National Sale.
It belongs to the Fort Wood filly Savannah Cat, who is out of a half sister to Western Winter. She was sold at 2015 Nationals, and is a winner over 1400m and last seen out this year in March when trained by Duncan Howells for the Rattrays. The top-five priced lots include two colts sold in 2010. Divine Jet (4 million), a Jet Master stallion with his first crop on the ground as foals of 2016, and Singspielstallion Potala Palace (3.6 million), whose first crop are yearlings. Potala Palace has three at this sale, including #209, a colt out of a mare by Spectrum. The latter has combined spectacularly with the female line of the stallion.
3
178 33 5000
The difference in age in days between the oldest and the youngest yearling at the sale.
The oldest is #383, a filly out of Brazilian Gr2 & Gr3 winner (as a 2yo, over 1400 and 1500m) Energia Elegante. The mare was bought for 15.000 guineas by David Allen at the Tattersalls July-sale in 2015, and foaled a colt by Epsom Derby winner Sir Percy later that same month, on 29 July. The yearling is his dam’s first foal, and is consigned by Ascot Stud. On pedigree he should have no problem staying 2000m. The youngest is #67, a filly born on 23 January 2016. This one’s a stud prospect first, more than a racing one. She’s the 12th foal of her dam, the Irish-bred Royal Academy mare Mystic Spring. The mare is dam and grandam of champions and Gr1 winners, including the sisters All Is Secret and The Secret Is Out, who are both by Captain Al. The hope of the winter season, Bela-Bela, is a half sister to the filly. Expect spirit bidding for the Cheveley Stud consigned youngster, whose stamina seems likely to stretch from sprints up to a mile.
168
The number of yearlings sired by the top-dozen stallions on the current sire-list. The top-dozen are from the Sporting Post table of Leading Sires by Stakes as at 21 April, in this order, with their number of yearlings on offer. 16 CAPTAIN AL 20 SILVANO 6 TRIPPI 24 DYNASTY KAHAL 28 VAR 9 ELUSIVE FORT WESTERN WINTER 19 GIMMETHEGREENLIGHT 2 GREYS INN 23 SAIL FROM SEATTLE 21 MAMBO IN SEATTLE
50
The total number of vendors of yearlings at the sale
The highest number of yearlings catalogued from a single vendor.
The lowest advertised fee at conception in 2014 of National Sale yearlings by a South African based sire.
The three leaders are the same as last year, only the order is different. Moutonshoek has 33, Varsfontein 31 and Klipdrif Stud 28. Hot on their heels with 27 is Mauritzfontein Stud, then come Drakenstein (24) and Ascot Stud (22). Between them, that’s a perfect third of the whole catalogue.
That stallion is Dupont, who has a single filly on offer. She’s lot 186, consigned by Lyth Orford’s Bosworth Farm Stud. The filly is full sister to a winner (rated AR 87), and half sister to stakes winner Rivulet, their dam a winning daughter of highclass miler Northern Singer (full sister to champion stayer Travel North). The stallion’s advertised fee was R5k in 2014.
The number of yearlings sired by 10 stallions with 20 or more yearlings on offer.
Sires represented at the sale, with their number of yearling by sex, and their advertised fee at time of conception in 2013, and current fee as advertised in 2015.
230 That’s 46% of the total 492 yearlings on offer.
364
The number of yearlings sired by 19 stallions with 10 or more yearlings on offer. That’s 73% of the total 492 yearlings on offer.
9
The highest number of stakes winners to date from a sire x broodmare sire combo at this sale. Not unexpectedly the combo consists of older names, stallions who have had plenty of opportunity. In this case it is champion sire Captain Al with mares by Champion sire Fort Wood. The nine stakes winners include current Vodacom July topweight Captain America, a Gr1 winner, and this year’s Cape Guineas winner William Longsworth, destined to start his stallion career in 2017. The lot represented at Nationals is #337, a filly out of stakes winner Cinnamon Sugar, consigned by Moutonshoek. Her full brother sold at this sale last year for R175k, and is an as yet unraced 2yo this season.
453 Countdown at Nationals.

It is said that when the going gets tough, the youknow-who get going... After the 2016 NYS reality check – attributed in some quarters to a lack of presence in the upper market - the hosts and our never-say-die breeding fraternity are to be commended for bouncing back with the perfect tonic – a genuine quality bumper and varied catalogue, to lift the spirit in 2017. The National Yearling Sale has stood the test of time, with graduates having won over 400 Gr1 races. They include some of our biggest names of the last four decades in that illustrious alumni. The sale has also moved with the times – R7 million is up for grabs by way of the lucrative added value stakes incentive – which has been tweaked to include Gr1, Gr2 and Gr3 races – as well as a unique quick return option of the Maiden Juvenile category! The 2017 renewal sadly marks the end of an era in South African racing and breeding as numbered amongst the 50 sires is Mauritzfontein’s late, great champion and champion broodmare producer, Fort Wood. This will be a last opportunity to acquire one of eight yearlings by one of the most influential stallions ever to stand at stud in Africa. The wise suggest that blood rules the land and the 492 lots include a grey colt (#380) by exciting internationally proven sire Oratorio out of Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner, Emerald Beauty; a Var colt (#401) out of the Gr1 Summer Cup winner
Flirtation; a Visionaire filly (#14) out of champion 2yo and Gr1 Allan Robertson winner, Legally Blonde while multiple Gr1 winner Princess Victoria has a Silvano filly (#112) that will have every man and his dog barking. If that doesn’t get you there, consider the worldbeating possibilities of # 67 – a Captain Al half-sister to champions Rabiya and BelaBela from one of our best families. For those looking for some classic class, try Gr1 Durban July winner Heavy Metal’s half brother (# 97) by Ideal World. A 2017 July candidate and multiple Gr1 winner, Captain America has a half-brother (#132) by the high-class Judpot, while Sail From Seattle has been on fire with his 11 2yo winners this term and his halfbrother (#10) to multiple Gr1 star Smart Banker will fill the auditorium from the opening bell. And there are plenty more! Now it’s up to you to put your hand up at the right moment – there should be plenty of those potentially life-changing flashes over the three days. Enjoy!

As stallions get older, so their commercial appeal diminishes. The market knows no mercy. A slightest sign of weakening with offspring on-track, and down come the prices at the yearling sales. Right now all of our top-sires are twenty years old, or just under, or dead. No real pretenders to the crown in sight yet. A healthy breeding industry depends on a solid number of vigorously competing top-class stallions. Like we have now. But may not have in five years time, or even less. As breeders, how worried should we be?
