LISTED CHAMPION JUVENILE CUP at Fairview this Friday
A
The visitors have a solid record in the R200 000 Listed Champion Juvenile Cup. Joey Ramsden travels from Milnerton with recent Langerman runner-up Big Pleasure in a bid to follow up on his 2015 success with Prince Of Thieves.
nton Marcus makes a rare visit to the Eastern Cape to partner Big Pleasure at his fourth start. The son of Horse Chestnut was well beaten but ran on powerfully behind the highly regarded Tap O’ Noth in the Cape 1500m feature last time. He won his maiden at the second time of asking over 1400m, and if coping with the switch from left-handed to right –handed tracks, must have a serious chance.
Step Up The Oratorios are flying and Grant Paddock’s Sacred Oration is one of the top gallopers of his year down here. A three-time winner form five starts, he has relished the step up in ground and will likely be even better over a mile. He beat Kimberley Star (0,75 lengths) and Gizmo (2,25 lengths) over the track-and-trip last time out and 2kgs better off here, he looks very capable of stepping up. Fillies have won this race 2 of
the past 3 runnings – with Vaughan Marshall’s Jet Set Go scoring a big win in 2014. Top rated of the fairer sex trio is Toreador's smart daughter, Banjo Buzz. A narrow loser of the Listed Lady’s Slipper last time, she is well drawn and takes on the boys for the first time – with the aid of a 2,5kg sex allowance. Precious Pansy finished 4 lengths behind Banjo Buzz in third there and looks held.
Champion Local champion Alan Greeff broke the raider stranglehold last year with the smart filly O Tamara and he saddles a decent trio on Friday. Looking to be the stable elect, Seattle Flame is one of a vintage crop of Sail From Seattle 2yo’s. A winner of 2 from 4 starts, he spreadeagled his opposition last time and steps up in ground from the sprints. His dam won at 2450m, so there is more than a flicker of hope on the stamina front. Kimberley Star has shown an ability to cope with this course and distance and has run four good
races. He will definitely be looking for further in time to come and while held by Sacred Oration, must have a place chance. Dorrie Sham’s Pinnacle Peak showed speed and won readily on his 1000m debut against winners. He was kept to the minimum trip at his second start when Dickensian turned the tables at level weights. Irish Flame’s first ever winner Gizmo was beaten by Sacred Oration and Kimberley Star in a fair courseand-distance post maiden effort. He has proven fairly consistent.
Runaway Coyote Creek ran a cracker in the Listed Dahlia Plate three runs back and was a runaway course and distance maiden winner last time. The son of Sail From Seattle is drawn on the wide outside and has an outside chance if maintaining his improvement. Recent polytrack maiden winner Pina steps up in class and has a tough ask in mixed company. She looks well held by Gizmo and Banjo Buzz on earlier form. The Cape Town form is usually a length or two better and if Big Pleasure adapts to the new track, he could be a major force to contend with. But Sacred Oration looks very talented and with homeground advantage, he is the selection to beat Seattle Flame – with Big Pleasure in the mix.

Flying At 40 Fairview, the venue for Friday’s Champion Juvenile Cup, recently celebrated its 40th year of existence. Although racing started via British garrisons in Port Elizabeth as far back as 1817 at a farm by the name of Cradock Place, official meetings at Fairview Estate through the newly established Port Elizabeth Turf Club were started in 1857 when there was little but a small town. The Fairview Estate was transferred in ownership in 1883 to the Turf Club, signed by Sir Hercules Robinson on behalf of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, thereby securing racing’s home for a further 120 years in the Eastern Cape before a new course was acquired, at St Albans in 1974. The Jockey Club of South Africa was also founded here in 1882 before moving to Johannesburg in 1904. The old course at Fairview (situated where Greenacres Shopping Centre is today) was relinquished and a new course at St Albans was developed with state of the art facilities and amenities over a period of three years at a cost of just over R3-million at the time, under the guidance of then Chairman, Mr A. Moffett, and visionary, Mr Roumanoff, of the Greatermans Group. The new course at St Albans opened on 18th June 1977. Known for the popular Algoa Cup run in October, Derby and Oaks in May of each year, Fairview Racecourse became part of Phumelela Gaming & Leisure in 1999, later building additions of a new R20million stabling complex with space for an additional 288 horses in 2008 as well as state of the art mechanical starting stalls imported from Australia in 2011. The Polytrack was added in 2013, allowing all weather racing. The modern day Fairview is situated in Greenbushes.

Gr1 VODACOM DURBAN JULY Greyville last Saturday
T
The 2008 July deadheat hero Bernard Fayd’herbe produced the thrills in the same silks again at Greyville on Saturday when he brought the 2016 runner-up Marinaresco with a beautifully timed effort to collar the fancied Al Sahem in the final strides of the R4,25 million Gr1 Vodacom Durban July.
he recent Cape Winter Series winning rider, Fayd’herbe was aboard the Mike Bass-trained champion Pocket Power when he shared the honours with Kevin Shea on Dancer’s Daughter nine years ago. The heavyweight rider donned the famous pink, white and blue Shirtliff silks again on Saturday to register a double in a race top of any jockey’s bucket list. And this time he did the honours for Mike’s daughter – the first lady trainer of the modern era to lift the prestigious silverware. Candice Bass-Robinson may have been born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth in horseracing terms. She took over one of the most powerful strings in the country on the retirement of her legendary father at the beginning of this season. But the blonde horsewoman has kept things very professional and progressive, and she put the cherry on top of a great season, when she saddled the winner of one of our great races, at her first attempt on Saturday. With three runners in the race – she also saddled deadheating fourth placed filly, Nightingale and the pricy 3yo Horizon – she would have fancied her chances of taking on the fancied Daily News top two of Edict Of Nantes and Al Sahem. And the racing gods were with her! Fayd’herbe had Marinaresco four from last as Piere Strydom took It’s My Turn up to lead at the mile marker, as the pace was on the slow side, after Krambambuli had lead early. It’s My Turn led them for home with Marinaresco angling from the rail out to the middle for his run. With Al Sahem challenging the relentless galloping Krambambuli for the lead, Fayd’herbe was forced to switch in for his run and he brushed a tiring The Conglomerate as the blinkered gelding darted down the inside.
With the hard-ridden Al Sahem looking a winner inside the 200m, the 17-1 Marinaresco dug deep under a peach of a ride to register his second career Gr1, with a dramatic win by a head in a time of 132,51 secs. Al Sahem ran his heart out under a punishing ride, but even in receipt of 6,5kgs was not quite good enough on the day. Fellow 3yo Edict Of Nantes had no luck on the outside but stayed on strongly for third a further 0,25 lengths back. The winner’s stablemate Nightingale and Snaith’s Krambambuli dead-heated for fourth, a further short head back. Horizon rounded off a great race for the Bass-Robinson team when making up lengths after turning last for home, to run sixth. He beat the highly vaunted Black Arthur, who probably found the weight of expectation on his shoulders counted in the end when he failed to produce the kick required. Last year’s winner The Conglomerate finished in 13th position, just under six lengths off the winner. Bernard Fayd’herbe said that he had ‘so much horse’ underneath him as he turned into the straight. “I just gave him a few taps and he took off. What a courageous little horse,” he said. This was a glorious 1-2 finish for champion sire elect Silvano, who ran 1-2-3 in 2015, and also produced 2013 winner, Heavy Metal. Marinaresco, who races in a partnership of Mike Bass, Marsh Shirtliff, Bryn Ressell and Freddie Green, is a 2014 BSA National Yearling Sale graduate. He was purchased by Mike Bass Racing for R1,3 million and took his earnings to R5 085 425 at his sixth win with 9 places from 18 starts. Bred by Mauritzfontein Stud, Marinaresco is by Silvano (Lomitas) out of the two-time winning Gay Fortuna (Fort Wood).

The splits for the two 2200m races are enlightening. The July Consolaon was visibly slow early (but was made to look faster by the camera in the car). The winner Crowd Pleaser made the running and kicked clear coming off the bend. Effecvely false run, decided in a sprint home – the winner was in the right place. The July was noceably quicker inially, but then each segment aer the 2nd call was slower, and the final me only marginally faster than that of the Consolaon. The Garden Province was visibly steady early on and developed into a sprint – yet another Gr1 win for Bela-Bela this season in a race run at a false pace, where she gets the opportunity to show her exceponal acceleraon. Here she was ideally placed, right with the pace, winning impressively – unlike the Paddock Stakes in January, where she came from near-last in a slow run race and only just got up. The bolded mes in the 1000m-spur and spur-finish segments are the fastest in their columns and tell their tale.

Khumalo and Tarry again as Desert Rhythm finishes powerfully to beat Let It Flow
Gr2 GOLDEN SLIPPER Greyville last Saturday
Bling’s Got The Rhythm
H
The champion combination of Sean Tarry and S’manga Khumalo struck early on July day when their Mambo In Seattle filly Desert Rhythm ran away from her opposition for an eyecatching victory in the R600 000 Gr2 Golden Slipper.
ardly a feature day goes by without this power duo hitting the boards and owner Chris van Niekerk looks to have a very smart filly on his hands. Allowed to relax in third from her wide draw as Richard Fourie played catch-me-if-you-can on recent maiden winner Gee Whizz out front, and ahead of the flashy looker Spring Breeze in second, S’manga Khumalo took his time on
Desert Rhythm. He unleashed her at the 300m marker and she kicked smartly, changing legs late to resist the late challenge of Gauteng visitor Let It Flow. Desert Rhythm may have flattered her opposition with the one length win margin. She clocked 82,73 secs for the 1400m. Tsessebe came out of the pack to grab third – a great run from her wide draw. The winner’s stablemate Rockin
Russian finished her race off well and banked the fourth cheque. Trainer Sean Tarry said that he was worried about Desert Rhythm after her quiet gallop . “I thought my two stablemates would give her a run for it – but S’manga took the race by the scruff of the neck and she won readily,” he said. S’manga Khumalo, who won on her at her penultimate start, said that he felt she would be very hard to beat. Bred by Nutfield Stud, Desert Rhythm was a R200 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate. She has won 3 races with 4 places from 7 starts and took her stakes to R567 000. A daughter of Mambo In Seattle (Kingmambo), the winner is out of the one-time winner, Al Zahra (Al Mufti).
Gr3 GOLD VASE Greyville last Saturday
GOLD CIRCLE
Captain Splendid and Hermoso Mundo are locked together at the finish
I
Trainer Weiho Marwing has had his fair share of trauma with Greyville July day objections. It has been three years since he experienced one of the worst moments of his career – but things turned out well for him on Saturday.
t was Marwing’s Wylie Hall who was demoted after beating Snaith’s Legislate in the 2014 Vodacom Durban July, and the roles were reversed on Saturday, with the two yard’s experiencing things from the other side of the fence. “The Stipes read the race perfectly,” said Marwing, after a boardroom decision saw his recent Gold Bowl winner Hermoso Mundo promoted to first to add the R500 000 Gr3 Gold Vase to his cv.
The 3000m contest opened the record July day Pick 6 and looked a tricky affair. But in the end, it was to be the horse ‘the whole of Joburg’ was talking about all week, that squeaked in. Banner Hill led the charge for home, with Piere Strydom challenging early on Captain Splendid, who had been five lengths off the leader in third for most of the trip. At the 250m marker, Hermoso Mundo burst through from some lengths back and that’s where
the fun and games started. Under a right-handed whip, Captain Splendid shifted out and joined Hermoso Mundo – before Strydom straightened him and got the upper hand. It was difficult to ascertain from the head-on whether there was contact, but they came close together. Karl Zechner did not appear to stop riding – an interesting and possibly fair call by the Stipes. After a short delay, Hermoso Mundo got the verdict by a short head in a time of 187,95 secs. Kinaan ran a smart Gold Cup prep to get third, a further 1,50 lengths back – and miles away from the action in centrefield. Banner Hill was pacemaker for a long way and tired late for fourth. Helderberg Blue disappointed again and finished 11 lengths off
the winner, while Snaith topweight Ovidio was a distant last – and is unlikely to race again on the hard KZN ground. Karl Zechner, who won on Hermoso Mundo last time, said that his mount had enjoyed ‘a perfect prep’. “And he was always coming to win it,” he added, to confirm his agreement with the Stipes. A R200 000 Suncoast KZN
Yearling Sale purchase, the winner was bred by Mauritzfontein from Ideal World (Kingmambo) out of the ten time winner Escoleta Fitz (Fitzcaraldo) – an Equus champion who hails from the famous ‘E’ family. Hermoso Mundo is unbeaten in his two starts for Marwing. He has won 4 races with 9 places from 19 starts and has now earned R1 159 475 in stakes.
Luck Of The Irish! The objection against winner Captain Splendid in the Gold Vase was upheld and Hermoso Mundo declared the winner. A reminder that all straight win bets on Captain Splendid will be refunded at Hollywoodbets! This is part of the famous Hollywoodbets Irish Objection.. Multiple bets do not qualify.

Anthony Delpech enjoys an armchair ride on star filly Bela-Bela
Gr1 GARDEN PROVINCE STAKES Greyville last Saturday
W
Varsfontein’s star Dynasty filly BelaBela looks likely to be retired to stud after notching her third Gr1 success in facile fashion when slamming her opposition to win the R1 million Garden Province Stakes on July day.
hile Varsfontein Stud’s Carl de Vos confirmed to the Sporting Post that the final decision was still in the balance – particularly given the fact (and temptation!)) that she looks to be racing at her peak and has never been better – he said that they generally did not race their fillies into their 5yo careers. “Anthony Delpech said she has never felt so good. And the way she won on Saturday was really
impressive. But why should we push her? She has won 3 Gr1’s, was placed in Gr1 company against the boys this season and has done all we have asked of her,” he said, adding that there may be something left for her before the end of the season. The Cheveley Stud-bred BelaBela is living testimony again to the time-proven Varsfontein policy of buying the best, racing selectively and bringing them back to the paddock to produce the champions of tomorrow.
“We have taken things easier with her and she is now showing how good she really is. As a 3yo in KZN, she won a Gr1 and Gr2 but was not herself on July day. This was a different story with a structured approach this season,” he said, after the grey flyer had won by 3,75 lengths in a time of 94,89 secs. She’s A Giver finished best of the rest, with Bella Sonata in third. The smart 3yo Just Sensual never got into the hunt and finished in midfield. When taxed on which stallion would be covering Bela-Bela in her first season at stud, Carl said that there were options. “Captain Al doesn’t cover maiden mares so we may consider Gimmethegreenlight or Judpot. But once again, these are collective decisions that will be made in due course.”
Justin Snaith, who was disappointed to have another Varsfontein bred galloper demoted after Captain Splendid had won the Gr3 Gold Vase, had to wait twelve years to win this Gr1 for the second time and admitted he was a relieved man after everybody was talking about Bela-Bela ‘the banker’ in the build-up. “Everywhere I went it was BelaBela! So there was pressure. But that’s a plan come sweetly together. This race was the target to show how good she is – and boy, she is good! She just tired last time in the Gr1 Gold Challenge when running third. I must mention her groom Muleleki Ziwale. I have never seen a guy love and care for his horse like him. And when you are dealing with fillies, that makes all the difference to them putting it all in on the big
days,” he said. Bela-Bela took her stakes earnings to R2 586 875 at her seventh win with 2 places from 13 starts. The Cheveley Stud product was purchased by Varsfontein Stud at the BSA National 2yo Sale for R1,4 million. By Dynasty (Fort Wood), BelaBela hails from an outstanding winning female line. She is out of the prolific winner producing Mystic Spring (Royal Academy), whose champion sire, a Breeders Cup Mile winner, left behind no fewer than 167 stakes winner. Mystic Spring’s dam, Secret Sunday, is a full sister to Mystiko – who gave Michael Roberts his first British classic when winning the 1991 English 2000 Guineas.

Gr3 BETTING WORLD 2200 Greyville last Saturday
July Crowd Pleaser!
T
A cracking start-to-finish effort from Cup Trial runner-up Crowd Pleaser opened the July day feature programme at Greyville on Saturday when the smart Captain Al 3yo Crowd Pleaser won the R500 000 Gr2 Betting World 2200 in style.
he traditional July Consolation attracted a smaller field than usual, but the contest was wide open. Crowd Pleaser was one of two 3yo’s in the ten horse line up and he showed his progressive ability with a smooth win from gun to tape under Keagan De Melo. He was the
second winner in three races on the afternoon for trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren and the Wernars family. Turning for home, De Melo let the colt stride off his easy lead and he was never under pressure, drawing away to beat the fast-finishing Royal Badge by 2 lengths in a time of 132,65 secs. The run confirmed his excellent Cup Trial second when he finished in front of July fancy Black Arthur as no fluke!
The gallant mare Trophy Wife came on late after a slow start to get third. Trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren said that Crowd Pleaser’s racing style was admirably suited to the Greyville track. He would possibly be gelded and rested and then taken to Cape Town for the summer. A R400 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate, Crowd Pleaser was bred by Normandy Stud and is a son of Captain Al(Al Mufti) out of the USA-bred one-time winner Happy Jean (Charismatic). He has won 4 races with 5 places from 14 starts and took his earnings to R638 250.
In a press release issued last week and addressed to ‘Dear Journalists’, Racing Association CEO Larry Wainstein, writes: On behalf of the Equus Awards Committee, comprising myself, Clyde Basel and Graeme Hawkins, I wish to advise that the print and electronic awards previously awarded at the Annual Equus Awards will be discontinued with effect from this year. The reason that the committee took this decision is that the majority of entrants are employed by the racing operators and with this in mind, it was agreed to cancel this category. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in previous years. We look forward to the continuation of your support in the future. The annual Equus Awards, also known as the Oscars of South African horseracing, are presented to individuals, both equine and human, who have achieved exceptional results during the racing season for that period.
KZN Mare & Weanling Sale
November Sky Is Top Seller The topseller at Monday’s KZN Mare and Weanling Sales held at Spring Valley Stud was the chestnut mare, November Sky, who sold for R150 000 to Clifton Stud. Her oldest foal is a yearling by Var. Peter Blyth of Clifton Stud said that she was a lovely big mare with a leading pedigree, and a bonus of being in foal to Var who is a difficult stallion to access. A half-sister to August Rush and Miss October, she descends from the female line of She’s On Fire, She’s A Pippa and Cream Of The Crop. The top priced weanling was Lot 32 which sold to Michael Roberts for R50 000. The Visionaire colt out of Vanity by Jallad is a halfbrother to two winners, from the family of Australian Gr1 winner, Dracula. 32 of the 40 Lots consigned were sold, at an average of R18 000.

The combination of Aldo Domeyer and the evergreen Argonaut mare Clear Sailing scored their second consecutive success in the Listed East Cape Breeders Stakes at Fairview. Clear Sailing hit the front at the 250m marker and stayed on best of the lot to win by a half length in a time of 69,80 secs. The ever consistent Easy Street ran another solid race after a four run winning streak, to hold second a quarter length in front of longshot Twinkle Toes. The winner’s 3yo stablemate Beataboutthebush was always under pressure and may have needed the run after a ten week rest – running a quiet fourth. Longstanding KZN owner Cecil Baitz and his Aussie based Veterinarian son Gary race Clear Sailing in partnership after purchasing her out of the Dennis Drier yard, from the Muirs. Bred by James Armitage, Clear Sailing is by Argonaut (Western Winter), out of the five-time winning Clear Up (Goldkeeper). Clear Sailing was originally purchased for R350 000 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1. She has won 9 races with 11 places from 26 starts and took her stakes earnings to R761 700. Alan Greeff was the day’s top trainer with four winners, while Yvette Bremner saddled three strikes. Highlands, Part Of Ridgemont, sponsored Greg Cheyne was the leading jockey with three winners.
Justin Snaith’s 2017 Durban July dreams may not have panned out exactly as he had hoped, but the competitive Cape trainer finished the big day with a flourish – winning the last three races on the card. The final leg of their treble was achieved in the R150 000 Listed Daisy Business Solutions Handicap from a wide draw. And it was thanks to a peach of a ride by Richard Fourie. The Cape jockey bounced Copper Force out from his 12 gate and led as he found a position against the rail. Fourie then eased Copper Force back to fourth, before producing the smart gelding at the 350m marker. In what looked an early move, there were challengers aplenty but Copper Force changed legs and kicked away to win by a length in a time of 94,69 secs. A smart 3yo, Copper Force was purchased by Eric Sands for R70 000 off the 2015 CTS March Yearling Sale and took his earnings at his first stakes win to R1 674 375, with his third victory with 6 places from 10 starts. Bred by Ian Heyns, he is a son of Royal Air Force (Jet Master), who is no longer covering thoroughbreds, and out of the maiden Eastern Copper (Al Mufti).
Brett Crawford has enjoyed a glorious SA Champions Season but had to settle for just one of the July Day features. The KZN Yearling Sale Million win by his Great Britain colt Al Mariachi was a popular one for many punters. With a Pick 6 dividend of over R250 000 riding on his back, the Gr1 placed galloper confirmed the public faith and his form with an eyecatching display. The 1300m turf contest attracted 14 runners, all graduates of the KZN Yearling Sale class of 2016, and ridden confidently from his wide draw, Al Mariachi underlined his bargain buy tag with a good win by a half length. He stopped the clock in 76,50 secs. Paul Lafferty’s Sniper Shot had been well beaten in the Gold Medallion (where Al Mariachi ran third to the exciting Sand And Sea), but the son of Judpot showed good improvement to dash through late for second. Stakes were paid all the way down to fifth spot and the R25 000 cheque went to another son of Great Britain – Clint Binda’s Whorly Whorly banking that consolation. A R70 000 KZN Yearling Sale graduate, the Riverton Stud bred Al Mariachi is by Great Britain (Green Desert)out of the maiden, Senorita Al (Captain Al). He has won 2 races with 2 places from 5 starts and took his earnings with this big win to R775 000.
The second of two July Day races to be run on the Greyville polytrack produced a smart win for the well-related Bishop’s Bounty and a second winner for July hero, Bernard Fayd’herbe. Fayd’herbe replaced Piere Strydom on the R120 000 eThekwini Sprint joint topweight four hours after he had steered Marinaresco to a sensational July win. Tracking the strong galloper My Pal Al all the way around in the 1200m non black-type feature, the Justin Snaith-trained Bishop’s Bounty looked to be carrying his head awkwardly and appeared almost reluctant to pass the pacesetter. But at the 200m he put his mind to the job and swept past to win by 1,75 lengths in a time of 68,87 secs. He went off at a generous 10-1. Trippi’s Girl maintained her consistent form in third. The favourite Doosra was never going well and finished downfield in a disappointing effort. The well-related Bishop’s Bounty is a son of Western Winter (Gone West) out of the top-class Nacarat (Pas De Quoi). He’s thus a full-brother to both Brutal Force and new Klawervlei stallion, Red Ray. Bishop’s Bounty was purchased by Kerry Jack Bloodstock for R1,4 million at the 2015 CTS Lanzerac Ready To Run Sale. He has won 4 races with 6 places from 11 starts for stakes of R442 300.

Bernard Fayd’herbe has Ancestry in full cry as he is pipped by Purple Diamond (Nooresh Juglall) on his outside in a thriller
Gr2 GOLDEN HORSESHOE Greyville last Saturday
T
Trainer Sean Tarry delivered a joker in the pack and a snappy Gr2 double when the Var colt Purple Diamond held on in a desperately close finish to win the R600 000 Gr2 Golden Horseshoe at Greyville on Saturday.
he race produced a thrilling finish and may have sealed the 2yo sire championship for Avontuur stallion Var – although there may have been some bittersweet celebrations for the Somerset West-based top breeders, with their ‘new’ man Oratorio almost cracking an early first SA crop Gr2 success – his son, Ancestry, running
a great race to go down a nostril in second. Former SA Jockey Academy apprentice Nooresh Juglall, based in Singapore these days, was the man who produced the magic, adjusting to the rigours and demands of the Greyville circuit in only his fifth ride in the province in over 3 years. He had Purple Diamond a few lengths off pacesetter Hakeem as they spun for home and with Varallo
on the wide outside, and Ancestry looking a likely winner down the inside, Juglall timed his run to perfection to get the verdict by a nose in a time of 81,90 secs. Ancestry came within a heartbeat of making history for Oratorio, while the winner’s stablemate Captain And Master was given plenty to do and rattled through late for third. Var rounded off the quartet, with Flying Free running a cracker in fourth. Varallo and Hakeem faded late to be beaten out of the money. Trainer Sean Tarry, who celebrated a smart 2yo Gr2 double on the afternoon, conceded that Purple Diamond was a casualty of the difficult to resist dash-for-cash approach with the 2yo’s. “The cash was on offer in Cape Town and we tried to get him ready.
So his few runs may make his form look ordinary. He’s a smart colt. I thought Captain And Master was a bit unlucky in third. He is a very decent colt,” he added. The winner is a 2016 CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale R400 000 purchase by Chris Van Niekerk’s Rainbow Beach Trading. He has won twice with 2 places from 5 starts and stakes of R451 375. Purple Diamond was bred by Varsfontein for Anthony Peter and is a son of Var (Forest Wildcat) out of the four-time winner Jalberry (Jallad). He has won 2 races with 2 places from 5 starts and has earned R451 375. Both Ancestry and Captain And Master look very promising and exciting prospects too.

Brazillian Joao Moreira was fined HK$255,000 (R430 000) for causing interference in the tenth race 10 at Sha Tin on Saturday aboard beaten favourite Master Albert - a record for a careless riding charge. Moreira pleaded guilty to allowing Master Albert to ‘shift in sharply’ passing the 1000m mark. It could have been worse as Stewards allocated the hefty fine in lieu of a three-day riding suspension. Moreira is currently one win short of his record 168 winner total for a Hong Kong season, with three meetings remaining.
The Council of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association Of Zimbabwe have taken the decision to formally close the association. According to reports, they no longer have a viable breeding industry in Zimbabwe and thus see little point in maintaining an office. July winner and international star Ipi Tombe remains one of the best to have come out of Zimbabwe.

Pari-mutuel wagering dominates in Hong Kong – but that is not in competition with fixed odds! Recently released figures show that football betting looks likely to soon outstrip racing turnover at the Hong Kong Jockey Club. That should be yet another wake up call for horseracing administrators.
One of the most popular horses to race in the Cape in recent years has been retired to a life of luxury at the Equine - Librium Animal Therapy Clinic in Plettenberg Bay. The 8yo Nysaean gelding Blarney Bay won 9 races in a career spanning five years and three trainers. Blarney Bay was a two time winner when he was relocated to Mike Robinson after his former conditioner Stephen Page moved to Australia in 2014. Owned and bred by Peter De Beyer and Gill Dempsey, the gelding boasted a victory over superstar Captain America and knew only one way to race – from the front. He won 1 race for Sharon Kotzen at Fairview in January. He was the only horse we know who had to be hooded once he was in the stalls! Partowner Gill Dempsey lives in Plett and will be monitoring Blarney’s next career.”He may want to jump or do dressage. That’s up to him,” she said.
Lekker Bekker
The 45 year Jannie Bekker, who made a comeback after 9 years away from raceriding on the 2017 Easter Weekend, rode his first winner back at Kenilworth on Tuesday. Bekker partnered the fancied Apollo Star for trainer Joey Ramsden and staunch patrons Gisela Burg and Martin Wickens. Piet Botha, another veteran who made his comeback at the same time as Bekker, has already been amongst the winners.
Piere Strydom, riding Captain Splendid, not only lost the R500 000 Gr3 Gold Vase in the boardroom on Saturday on an objection, after a 50/50 duel – but got walloped with a ten day suspension for his efforts. That’s quite a turnaround.
The Equus Older Female category could be quite an interesting tussle next month after Bela-Bela’s scintillating Garden Province Stakes success on Saturday. Her and super sprinter Carry On Alice now have two Gr1 wins each this season.
Britain’s most successful female jockey Hayley Turner turned what is expected to be a brief comeback into an immediate success when riding Flying Sparkle to victory at Windsor on Monday night. The 34-year-old, who retired at the end of 2015 and is now principally employed as a broadcaster, seems to have some trouble staying out of the saddle and is back in action for the second consecutive summer. Her appearance at Windsor was supposedly just a warm-up before her participation in the inaugural Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship, which was held near Stockholm on Tuesday night.
BETTING IN AUSTRALIA… The untangling of agreements and red tape is one of the mountains in the path of a national tote and national pools in Australia. Former Phumelela man and current Tabcorp chairman David Attenborough is the guy in the hot seat. Pari-mutuel wagering has been on the decline in Australia due to the entry of corporate bookmakers and the tidal wave that has been their marketing. The bookies have successfully shifted many Aussie punters to a fixed-odds mindset; a transition that would appear difficult to reverse. Today’s punters are better educated and more price-sensitive than ever, increasingly viewing their betting through more of an investment lens.
The 2003 July winner Dynasty, sire of Saturday’s Garden Province stakes winner Bela-Bela, has had another big season, with his nine individual black type winners landing no fewer than 16 black type races in 20162017, including the Gr1 Woolavington 2000, Gr1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas, Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, and his son African Night Sky landing all three legs of the Cape’s Winter Series – sponsored by his home-base, Highlands, Part Of Ridgemont.

Candice Robinson
Smooth Sailing S
They say Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels. Someone who is doing the same in the SA training ranks is Candice Robinson, who has just become our first lady trainer to saddle a July winner.
aturday, 1 July 2017 was one for the history books when the littlest horse, with the biggest weight and the tallest jockey, stormed to victory for Candice Robinson, having her first go at the July under her own name. If that isn’t impressive enough, Marinaresco did it with same jockey as Pocket Power, carrying the same the famous silks for part-owner Marsh Shirtliff and with dad Mike Bass owning a share in the horse, it is likely the first time a trainer saddled a July winner for their father too !
Gracious
CANDIESE MARNEWICK
We caught up with Candice Robinson the day after the big race and found her taking a few moments to grab an ice-cream and a few moments of quiet (well, until we showed up anyway) on the Durban promenade. “No, no,” she protests when we apologise for the intrusion. “I’m just relaxing for a few minutes. We’re all a bit tired. It just hasn’t stopped!” While one might be forgiven for thinking she meant the victory celebrations, she explains, “My poor mother is sick with food poisoning, plus she fell on her way to the winner’s enclosure. She landed on her hip and now she can hardly walk. It’s been a bit of a nightmare, actually. Never a dull moment!” she exasperates good
go to him – it’s not easy to deal with the pressure. I think he took a fair amount of criticism with Marinaresco and I think a lot of people wrote him off after his last run, but he was just spot on for Saturday and he ran accordingly.”
Writing History
Much has been made about it naturedly and somehow makes it all sound like a light-hearted adventure being Candice’s first season and rather than additional pressure on her first July under her own name as top of what must have been an well as the additional provenance of incredibly long and nerve-wracking running Marinaresco in the famous pink, white and blue that Bernard day. What’s it like waking up as the Fayd’herbe and Pocket Power carried latest July winning trainer? “I’m to victory for her father’s string back just trying to catch up on all the in 2008, but it’s particularly special messages and Facebook posts,” that Mike Bass owns a share in Marinaresco. “They she admits. “There coming up with have been a million I trained a winner for are all sorts of stats, I messages from far you today, Dad don’t know where and wide. People they get them from, have come out of the woodwork that we haven’t heard but I think it must be the first time from for years.” Noting that one is anybody has trained a July winner always overwhelmed by the number for their father. I said to him of friends and acquaintances that afterwards, ‘I trained a winner for you know are out there, but who you today, Dad’ which was nice. I one doesn’t necessarily hear from was really happy for him.” All in all it was a real family affair or contact on a regular basis until big occasions like this, she agrees as Bass Racing is very much a team readily. “It’s quite nice actually. effort between Mike, Carol, Candice and Mark and there is another bit One forgets.” “I had a feeling all three would run of provenance with assistant trainer well. Last Thursday after the sprint Robert Fayd’herbe being jockey up, they all just looked unbelievably Bernard Fayd’herbe’s brother. And of course there’s the small well and fit. They looked spot on. It was difficult for me to think which matter of Candice being the first one would finish in front of the other. lady trainer to saddle a July winner. They really peaked at the right time. “They are saying I am the first. I I must say Robert (Fayd’herbe) did a wouldn’t know, but according to the great job and a lot of praise must general opinion out there I am. I think it’s quite nice for us ladies for a change,” she says proudly.
Mad Dash Asked how the horses have pulled up from the race, she reports that Marinaresco has a bit of a swollen eye, “He must have got hit by a clod, but he’ll be fine. It was a bit of a late night last night, so
I haven’t been out to check on them is the first horse since Pocket Power yet myself, but Robert is there and as to win carrying top weight, she long as they are eating, they’re fine. reflects, “It’s all sorts of little details We’ll trot them up and check them like that that make it so special. It’s all thoroughly in the afternoon.” a big feat for a little horse like that. The July is a bit of a scrum – what I don’t think people realise just how were her thoughts as she watched much. For the size he is to carry top the race unfold? “They turn for weight and there were some pretty home and it’s just a mad dash. It well-weighted horses in the race this was quite difficult having three year. It’s usually won by the best horses to watch. I started watching handicapped horse, that’s what the Nightingale first, July is all about. It with her black just makes it all the It’s all sorts of little colours – she was more special.” details like that that probably the best Commenting that placed in the race, they are in danger make it so special really - so I had my of needing a new eye on her. Then I was watching plaque to match Pocket Power’s Marinaresco until Bernard switched one at the front door of their yard, him in and got behind the other two she agrees. “He’s like the little mini horses, so I stopped watching him Pocket Power!” and went back to Nightingale. Then Meant To Be? I saw Horizon coming – he’d turned for home last and was coming down It seems a little unfair to enquire the outside - so I could see the two if there are any definite future plans of them and was shouting for them for Marinaresco yet and asked and didn’t actually see Marinaresco whether he has done enough for the on the inside. All of us sitting around season or might have another run the table – my mom, myself, Marsh before coming home Candice says and my dad – none of us realised they are still undecided. “I won’t he’d popped up. We only saw it for say definitely not. We’ll possibly the first time on the slow motion look at the Champions Cup, but we’ll replay,” she laughs. “I had to watch just have to wait and see.” After it over and over a few times for it to that it will be back to Cape Town actually sink in!” to prepare for the Cape ‘Summer Champions’. We’ll probably go Little Horse, Big Heart of the usual route of the L’Ormarins Bred by Mauritzfontein Stud by Queen’s Plate, the Green Point and Maine Chance Farms’ champion the Met again,” she says. sire Silvano out of the Fort Wood Of course it could all have been mare, Gay Fortuna, the little horse quite different. Fortunately – or has quite an interesting name, unfortunately, depending on one’s which was kindly explained by Guy point of view - plans for Marinaresco Murdoch. Fortuna is the Roman to join a proposed export consignment goddess of Fortune and is often to America at the end of the 2017 depicted holding a ship’s rudder. Cape summer season fell flat. “He Marinaresco is the Italian word for was supposed to go overseas, but sailor. Marinaresco stopped the they couldn’t fill up the plane and clock for the 2200m trip in 132.51 so he stayed.” And perhaps, like so and Candice was full of praise for many things in racing, it’s all worked jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe. “Bernard out as it should. rode a great race and that’s exactly Remarkable Feat how Marinaresco wants to be ridden. He likes to be left alone early and This year’s July produced a sit quite far back, sneak up a few blanket finish with the first 8 runners positions and then switch off a little all crossing the line within 2 lengths bit. He has an unbelievable turn of of each other and while it is hard not foot, which he has when ridden like to focus on the winner, it should also that, and that’s him. With his run be noted that all Candice’s runners in the Gold Challenge we just did did her proud. Anthony Delpech the wrong thing, and trying to keep on the gallant Nightingale crossed him close to the pace over a mile, I the line less than half a length think it was just too much. But in back to deadheat for fourth with a way, maybe it wasn’t a bad thing Krambambuli and Richard Fourie and Bernard knew exactly how to and Horizon were only a fraction of a ride him this time round.” length behind them in fifth spot. As Marinaresco seemed to take all the first attempts at the July go, it was big day hype in his stride and didn’t the most incredible performance. look the least bit perturbed by any of Wife, mother, devoted daughter, the post-race formalities. He hadn’t human to very demanding broken a sweat and didn’t even look Chihauhau named George, serious out of breath. “He was very relaxed top level dressage rider, boss of and so chilled the whole day,” notes one of the most competitive racing Candice. “He was quiet to saddle, strings in the country and now the quiet in the ring – everything. He first lady trainer to saddle a Vodacom was like ‘I’ve got it. I know what Durban July winner – in her very first I’m here for.’ He’s just an amazing, season – is there anything Candice amazing little horse.” Marinaresco Robinson can’t do?

Rider Cup On Saturday New Turf Carriers will sponsor the 2017 Rider Cup Interprovincial jockeys’ challenge which takes place at Scottsville Racecourse this Sunday. Based on the National Jockeys and Apprentice logs as at the end of May, invitations were sent to riders from each of the provinces with the leading jockey in each of the jurisdictions being appointed the Captain of his team. “The top three riders in each province at the end of May (based on National statistics) will qualify for automatic invitations but the fourth member of each team will be a ‘Captain’s pick’, which represents a change from previous years’ team selection,” said Gold Circle’s Marketing
Executive Graeme Hawkins. “There are sometimes unforeseen circumstances which could lead to a deserving rider not having ridden enough winners to qualify automatically and the onus will now be on the Captain to extend a personal invitation to the fourth member of each team,” he added. The Highveld Hawks are the defending champions while the KZN Falcons won the inaugural Rider Cup in 2015. The Cape Eagles have finished second in both previous events and will be looking to set the record straight this year.
Mercury Rising! The R800 000 Gr1 Mercury Sprint, one of South Africa’s premier-weight-for-age contests, brings the curtain down on the season’s speed majors when it is run at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday 15 July. A total of 22 entries have been received, and they include the whose who of the sprinting ranks. There is still opportunity for this number to swell with supplementary entries due by Friday 7 July. The Mercury Sprint was hosted at Clairwood for years but on the Garden Course’s closure was run there for the last time in 2014, when won by Mike Bass’ Jet Master filly Fly By Night. It has been won by some of our great horses over the years – including Jet Master,
National Colour and international star, JJ The Jet Plane. The first two runnings at Greyville have produced two stallions – Captain Of All and Red Ray both having retired to Klawervlei. Drakenstein stallion What A Winter won the race in 2012. Unlike when it was run down the Clairwood straight, the Greyville circuit brings luck of the barrier draw into play. The Mercury Sprint preview and history will be covered in our next weekend edition.

Three South African jockeys riding in Mauritius found themselves making international news from the UK to Australia last week, after a video of a boat-trip caught the attention of the local racing authority and the police.
You-tube video showed at least three SA jockeys – Brandon Lerena, Raymond Danielson and Muzi Yeni - on a catamaran, with a group that included a South African racing personality, in the company of an on-course bookmaker.
Different Rules
In South Africa there are no rules regarding jockeys associating with bookmakers, but this is strictly outlawed on the island. South African jockeys are briefed and appraised of the Mauritius Turf Club rules on their arrival and warned of the dangers associated with socialising. So said MTC Director Of Racing Benoit Halbwachs when approached for comment by the Sporting Post on the subsequent three month suspension meted out to Raymond Danielson and Brandon Lerena for associating with a bookmaker on the boat trip last month. When pressed on how the South Africans could possibly have known that their host was a bookmaker, Mr Halbwachs confirmed that the gentleman in question was a registered on-course bookmaker. “He is one of about thirty bookmakers operating on course for many years at the Champ de Mars, and is known in the racing community,” he said.
Booked
When questioned as to what action, if any, would be taken against the bookmaker, Mr Halbwachs said that he could face censure by the Gambling Regulatory Authority – but that he could not elaborate further on that aspect. Halbwachs said that both Lerena and Danielson had appealed their suspensions. There was no indication when these would be heard. “The police will need to give clearance for them to leave Mauritius and I know that Brandon (Lerena) was scheduled to return to South Africa this week,” he said. Yeni, who was forced to forego a ride in the July last Saturday, as he has been refused permission to leave the island, has not yet been charged in regard to his boat trip as the MTC had adopted a wait and see approach. This was because he was already under police investigation for Whatsapp messages on his mobile phone. He was cleared by the MTC in that matter, but can still face charges by the racing authority in regard to the boat trip. Halbwachs said he had heard nothing further about Yeni’s case from the police and we were informed, as we went to press on Tuesday evening, that Yeni and his Mauritian legal adviser were in a meeting with the police. Fines and suspensions imposed in Mauritius are recognised by the National Horseracing Authority of South Africa.
After The Fact A not unexpectedly rough race, with some hardluck tales, and the fastest time since Pocket Power dead-heated with Dancer’s Daughter in 2008 – the Vodacom Durban July cold facts, beyond the Candice Bass-Robinson history-making fairytale. An undoubtedly deserved victor, Marinaresco was only the second horse this century to win the July with top weight since El Picha in 2000. The other was Pocket Power in 2008. The early part of the race failed to conform to the ‘gofor-broke and ease it up near the Drill Hall’ syndrome. The pace was plain slow and it took the initiative of Piere Strydom, riding a horse that came from stone last to win the Cape Derby, to go out and show the way. Aldo Domeyer, who together with Singapore visitor Nooresh Juglall was suspended for not keeping a straight course, tracked It’s My Turn all the way round and built his staying mount up for an early move in the S'manga Khumalo straight – no doubt fearing that he would be outsprinted in the chase for glory. SA Champion jockey S’Manga Khumalo appeared to lose his composure, winding the favourite and runner-up Al Sahem a good few times in the closing stages. The truth was that Al Sahem just wasn’t really quickening late. Bling was fined for using his whip with excessive frequency over the final stages. The unlucky horse of the race has to be Daily News winner Edict Of Nantes. He would not have enjoyed the muddling pace, was caught pulling up his socks, and only got going when the race was over – beaten a quarter length. Maybe a winner in three more strides? The winner’s stablemate Nightingale, finished best of the two fillies (Safe Harbour finished one from last) to dead-heat for fourth with Krambambuli. Their stable companion Horizon, who squeaked in on a reserve ticket, took sixth cheque of R50 000. He came from last in an eyecatching performance and he looks a 4yo to be with next term. The most talked about horse in the build-up, Black Arthur, appeared to have every chance and was a half length behind Horizon, and a head in front of his stablemate It’s My Turn. Betting World 1900 winner Ten Gun Salute finished in midfield, and was the last horse to pick up a stake. Last year’s winner The Conglomerate never sparked and ran 13th and just under 6 lengths off the winner. The rest were beaten fair and square.
The Stipes Report THE STARTER REPORTED : AL SAHEM (S Khumalo), MR WINSOME (W Kennedy) and HORIZON (R Fourie) were slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED (ER) : Approaching the 1800 metre mark SAFE HARBOUR (N Juglall) shifted in slightly resulting in SARATOGA DANCER (C Zackey) and TEN GUN SALUTE (AUS) (W Marwing), becoming cramped for galloping room, resulting in TEN GUN SALUTE (AUS) (W Marwing) racing awkwardly for a number of strides. Shortly thereafter SARATOGA DANCER (C Zackey) brushed the hindquarters of SAFE HARBOUR (N Juglall) which was turned inwards resulting in SARATOGA DANCER (C Zackey) losing position. Jockey N Juglall signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 62.2.7, in that as the rider of SAFE HARBOUR, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to the runners on his inside at approximately the 1800 metre mark. He was suspended for a period of 7 days. (suspended from the 10 July 2017 – 16 July 2017, bdi) At approximately the 1600 metre mark KRAMBAMBULI (A Domeyer) shifted inwards resulting in SAFE HARBOUR (N Juglall) and TEN GUN SALUTE (AUS) (W Marwing), becoming severely tightened for galloping room and making contact on a number of occasions. Jockey A Domeyer signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 62.2.7, in that as the rider of KRAMBAMBULI, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to the runners on his inside at approximately the 1600 metre mark. He was suspended for a period of 10 days. (Suspended from the 05 July 2017 – 14 July 2017, bdi) Approaching the 150 metre mark NIGHTINGALE (A Delpech) which was hanging out, shifted out, carrying TEN GUN SALUTE (AUS) (W Marwing) outwards resulting in SAFE HARBOUR (N Juglall) having to be eased off the heels of TEN GUN SALUTE (AUS) (W Marwing). Jockey C Zackey the rider of SARATOGA DANCER (7.75 lengths) reported this gelding not striding out freely in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. Jockey S Khumalo signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, in that as the rider of AL SAHEM, he used his crop in an unnecessary manner and with excessive frequency over the final 150 metres. He was fined R1500.
July – A Betting Bonanza Vodacom Durban July day once again produced betting fireworks with a total of R138 million wagered on local racing venues on the tote. The total growth from a South African perspective was up from R 106 million in 2016 to R 109 million in 2017. Gold Circle racing territory showed the highest growth of just under 5,5% from R 61 m in 2016 to just under R 65 m in 2017. On Course attendance and tickets sales confirmed this trend. Kenilworth Racing showed a 4,5% growth and only PGL showed a decline of some 2%. The
decrease was apparently due to a R10 million decrease in the PGE (Isle Of Man) turnover. The initiative to introduce guaranteed pools for the Pick 6 and the Durban July quartet worked wonders, according to Phumelela Executive Vee Moodley. “ The response from the betting public was seen in us achieving historic turnovers for those bet types,” he said. The Pick 6 achieved a nett pool of just under R 12,1 m, while the big race quartet pool reached a massive R 19 022 956. The July win pool topped the R11,6 m mark. According to Vee Moodley, the Favourable results on the day also assisted to generate more ‘churn’ for the tote, as could be seen later in the evening when the pools were strong.

2017 Vodacom Durban July Debrief
T
Every year I do my ‘bah humbug’ impression and swear that this year July fever won’t get me. It’s a handicap, the track is impossible, it’s a rough and ready rugby scrum for the post and almost ever year there is some kind of disaster, high drama or upset result.
his year’s July got out of the starting blocks early. We nearly had a black stallion, and then we didn’t. We nearly had Muzi Yeni and then we didn’t. Of course we nearly didn’t have Horizon and then we did. I think perhaps it’s because of all the variables and its sheer unpredictability that makes it so alluring. The July, perhaps more than any of our big feature days, allows one to hope. Once those gates open, you can throw the draws, the handicaps and the going out of the window - you are in the lap of the gods and anything can happen. Whether it’s Lady Luck, the Luck of the Draw or even just plain Blind Luck, it is perhaps this sheer capriciousness that makes the Durban July the one race on the South African racing calendar that above all others, every owner, trainer, breeder and jockey wants to win. So despite my best efforts, it manages to get me every time. Like most of our big days with long standing sponsors, there is a defined rhythm to the July and the day ebbs and flows around the card, changing its mood and texture as the day wears on.
All the winners
A twelve race card is a lot to digest, but with so many horses, stories and colour, it is a white knuckle ride through the day as everyone wants a winner. I don’t want to miss anyone out, so will start at the top. Gavin Lerena, back on a flying visit, secured an early birthday present with a determined ride on Silver Class in the 1400m poly dash on the card opener for the Johan Janse van Vuuren yard. Anton Marcus earned his riding fee the hard way in race 2 with Head Honcho, to quote Sheldon Peters ‘doing everything to get beat’. Despite being devilled by an ornery horse and an errant stick, Anton was not taking no for an answer and all but physically pushed the La Plaisance homebred over the line
in the 1400m Mumm Stakes for Plattner Racing. A gracious Andre Nel gave all credit to Barend Botes and the team saying, “I’m just the one standing in front of the camera.” The Betting World 2200, or ‘consolation July’ got the day’s features under way a touch before 1pm and welcomed back Callan Murray. The Normandy bred son of Captain Al, Crowd Pleaser has shown excellent Durban form, beating Edict Of Nantes in May and finishing a short head behind Elusive Silva in the Cup Trial earlier this month. Keagan de Melo got him out smartly, settled into the driving seat and as Craig Peters said, led them a merry dance all the way across the line to give Johan Janse van Vuuren a quick double. It was fun to have Andrew Bon to get a blow by blow account from the saddle, even though he nearly directed poor Keagan the wrong way back to the winner’s enclosure. In the Gold Vase, Captain Splendid lugged in badly over the final 100m, resulting in a titanic battle with Hermoso Mundo. The son of Ideal World held his line courageously and the two crossed the line as one. It didn’t take long for the objection hooter to sound and the result eventually went the way of Weiho Marwing, resulting in one of the most entertaining post race interviews I’ve seen in a long time. Thank goodness for the volume button! Champion trainer Sean Tarry made it a clean sweep of the juvenile races, taking the Golden Slipper with Desert Rhythm and S’manga Khumalo (with Lyle Hewitson picking up a handy 4th place cheque on his pick up ride on Rockin Russian) and the Golden Horseshoe with Purple Diamond and Nooresh Juglall, also back for a visit. There is always a little spike in the adrenaline at this point in the day and somewhere between the fillies parading for the Slipper and the colts being unsaddled after the Golden Horseshoe, the Greyville crowd seems to thicken and swell and suddenly it’s standing room only for the main race.
A Rainbow Race for a Rainbow Nation
As the designated racing person in my circle of friends, I’m the ‘go to’ person for the July and do my best to give them a little pre-July run down on the year’s field. It’s also an opportunity to try and find a pick for the race. After all, it’s a horse race and you’re not invested until you have a dog in the fight. I tend to have the opposite problem and can find a reason for them all to win, but this year was a particularly colourful one in terms of the stories involved. All were deserving, but of course only one can cross the line first. Krambambuli had us holding our breath, the 3yo’s threatened, the filly flew, but the horse that threw his heart across the line and took ours with him, was Marinaresco. When I’d chatted to Bernard Fayd’herbe about his Pocket Power dead heat late last week, he said he wanted to win the race outright and as it turned out, Lady Luck chose to favour him with her smile and the rest of us got a fairytale. The lady trainer, the littlest horse, the biggest jockey, the top weight, the ‘right’ silks, the father-daughter team, the lot. Bloody Durban July running down both sides of my face. The colour of magic indeed. Last season he was the boy wonder, this season people were saying ‘boy, we wonder what happened’, and on Saturday, he said, “Boys, he who laughs last laughs the longest!’ There were some technical hitches with the sound for Bernard’s post race interview with Fiona Ramsden, but we got the bit that counted. “This one is especially for Mr Bass”. Asked for his thoughts on Candice’s first win at her first attempt, Bernard summed it up beautifully. “She’s done so well, just taking over
the reins, what a responsibility. She’s producing the goods time and time again. It just shows, what’s in your blood, you can’t wish away.” I just loved the little touch that Bernard’s silks carried Pocket Power’s name stitched into the collar. The old boy must be damn proud.
The best of the rest
With the big one out of the way, we can gradually exhale as the day starts to wind down. Mr Drier always sneaks onto the podium on July day and defended KZN’s honour with the gorgeous and beautifully named Horse Guards, who took full advantage of his 52.5kgs and walloped the field by 1.5 lengths under Sean Veale. Corne Orffer deftly overcame his wide draw in the KZN Sale Million, getting the Brett Crawford-trained Al Mariachi to the front of the pack and then following the shortest route home. Sniper Shot got to within his girth under a determined ride from apprentice Diego de Gouveia, but the post came in time. Watching the KZN Sale Million winner being led in under the stars has become another of the markers on my July day chart. With the sun gone and the day trippers melting into the interior of the track in search of libation and other comforts, the parade ring becomes the preserve of the horsemen again, which is just how I like it.
Colour Burst
As such, the stage was perfectly set for the Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes. One of the jewels on the day’s card for punters and purists alike, Susan Rowett’s ‘pink filly’ BelaBela delivered in devastating fashion for a beaming Justin Snaith. Snaith Racing proceeded to mop up the rest of the silverware, taking the eThekwini Sprint with the royally bred Bishop’s Bounty. Not only is he a full brother to Brutal Force and Red Ray (recently retired to stud), but also to Target Acquired, who Sally Jourdan was kind enough to loan me for an outride on my visit to Lammerskraal. So I was particularly pleased to watch Bernard
Fayd’herbe execute a hatchet job with military precision. However, one of my (other) favourite rides of the day (Marinaresco’s win tops the boards obviously!) was a very clever bit of riding from Richard Fourie in the last to overcome the draw and get Copper Force nicely placed to sew up the lucky last for the Snaiths as well. I just have to make a mention of all the special and hard-working people behind the scenes who put in so many hours to make sure we all have a good day out. Also a special thank you to the very lovely white-faced lead horse who did such sterling service all day and was still on duty to take the 6 horse down in the last race. Although SAFTote and Interbet were down for large parts of the day (it’s a little tough to accept poor turnover reports when we are unable to process bets on our biggest day of the year), but at least the stalls worked and the track was wide enough for all the horses, although with a number of runners finishing tailed off, the Stipes report will make for interesting reading.
Final Flourish
And there we had it. Months of sweat, frustration, fears and hopes – either delivered beyond expectation, or dashed on the Greyville theatre of dreams. The greatest ecstasy and the bitterest agony hidden behind the bright silks and the emerald turf. Molly Reinhardt’s little quote could have been made to order for this year’s theme, “Trainers, owners, jockeys, big time gamblers and small punters are revealed in their true colours when the chips are down. Many can take the triumphs, but not all can face the defeats. If you can’t take it, you shouldn’t be in it – much better to go into a nice quiet profession like undertaking – the only job in the world where you can rely on dead certs.” Either way, no matter how hard you try, the Vodacom Durban July always gets you.

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 7th - SUNDAY 9th JULY 2017
SALE PRICES 2017 KZN YEARLING SALE 28-29 June 2017 Twice Over, sire of this season’s leading Gr1 winning 2yo Sand And Sea from his first crop, got the top price at the KZN yearling sale. Nick Jonsson was the successful bidder at R800k on a colt from the Highlands consignment. The youngster is the first foal of his dam, a winning Tapit mare from the female line of sire Roberto. Recall that Highlands also consigned the top priced yearling at least year’s KZN sale, with a R1 million colt (and also had the second highest at R850k). Second top-price this year was a for colt from the first local crop of Duke Of Marmalade (who had a G1 2nd in the US over the weekend), consigned by Rathmor Stud. The yearling is half brother to Gr3 One Cool Dude and fell to a R460k bid from Team G Racing. Nick Jonsson also got the third highest priced colt, a half brother to Gr2 placed Greasepaint, consigned by Summerhill. The hammer fell at R320k, which was the same price Brett Crawford paid for a Captain Al colt from Boland Stud. That yearling’s dam is a Silvano half sister to Gr2 winner Hidden Beauty (who is by Victory Moon, and from Victory Moon’s own female line). The highest priced filly was a Var full sister to a winner, consigned by Backworth Stud. Mary Liley made the successful bid at R375k, the third highest price at the sale overall. The KZN Sale median price was R45k, down from R50k last year, continuing the slide shown in the last three years. Colt’s median was R50k (R60k last year), the one for fillies R35k (from R40k). Sale graduates qualify for the annual KZN Yearling Sale Million for 2yo’s, run on July-day. The race was won this year by Al Mariachi, a R70k buy last year. He’d earlier this year finished third to Sand And Sea in the Gr Gold Medallion, and took his earnings to R760k. Sale Index = price SI

Plenty To Go At A review of the week's best SPEEDRATINGS with Steve Furnish
KZN Breeders Day
Greyville 25 June They raced on both surfaces on Sunday with the lion’s share of the action taking place on the poly track. Four of the seven races on the poly were staged over 1200m and the quickest home in these was AMAZON KING. Backed into favouritism at the track, the 3yo son of Kahal raced ninth of the twelve early on. He ran on best of all in the short home straight and in an event where less than a length covered the first five home he got up late. The boys were also faster in the two 1600m races where in a time 2,7 seconds quicker than that of the girls, CUTTING EDGE registered his fourth career victory. Running on from a similar position to that of Amazon King, Dennis Bosch’s charge struck the front 100m out and went on to score with authority by a length and three quarters. The non-black type KZN Breeders Million Mile topped the bill and in what comparatively was the faster of the two races on the turf, we saw a smart performance from MATADOR MAN. Ridden by replacement rider Eric Ngwane, the Toreador gelding was yet another to win from the backend of midfield. He cut through the field quickly early in the straight and won going away by a length and three quarters after striking the front 120m or so from home. TITBITS

Having only his second career outing here, BIG BEAR ran on well from midfield when winning the boy’s division of the KZN Juvenile Plate over 1200m.

Vaal 27 June Tuesday’s action took place on the outside track where by far the fastest of the three 1200m races was the MR88 Handicap won by the progressive SECRET STAR. Now a winner of five from eleven, Stuart Pettigrew’s charge raced in midfield during the early part of the race. She quickened well from halfway and won in good style by three and a quarter. They also ran three races over 1400m and quickest home in these was BLUE DIAMOND ROAD in the MR66 affair. Another to run on stoutly from midfield, the 15/10 favourite had the remainder some five and a half lengths adrift when getting up in the very last stride to deny CHILI LIME (raced in the rear – led 250m). A MR96 Handicap topped the bill and in what proved to be the faster of the two 1000m events, the former Zimbabwe campaigner TANDAVA caused an upset. Freely available at 14/1 on the off, the 4yo son Century Stand sat fourth of the six for most of the journey. Just four lengths covered all going through the 400m though, and with the benefit of a 15kg pull with the useful CHAMPAGNE HAZE, he got the verdict by three quarters. TITBITS
Kenilworth 28 June Times showed that the going was clearly soft in Cape Town on Saturday. Three of the afternoon’s nine races were run over 1200m and stopping the clock in the fastest time amongst these was BLACKMORE when winning the MR80 Handicap. Dean Kannemeyer’s charge ran on well from midfield and comfortably accounted for JAY’S ROCK by a length and a half. The faster of the two 1600m maiden events on the card was the boy’s division won by the full brother to Captain America, REDEEMER. Sent off a strong favourite at 2/1, Brett Crawford’s charge was always handy. He took a while to get going, but once realising what was expected of him he ran on well, and got up nicely late to beat the second favourite TRIPPLE EXPLOSION by a length and a quarter. The stable of Brett Crawford (4 winners on the afternoon) were also on the mark in the faster of the two 1000m races, a MR86 Handicap, when the lesser fancied of his two runners SAILS SET landed the spoils. Allowed to ease out to 10/1 at the track, Sails Set raced in midfield. She began to take closer order going through the 400m and finishing best of all she got up late to beat MIRANDA FROST by a length. TITBITS
The 7/10 favourite SURCHARGE quickened very nicely late when getting off the mark in the maiden juvenile plate over 1200m.
Heavily supported WHITE RIVER won the maiden juvenile plate over 1200m with authority. Beaten three and three quarter lengths in this race, third placed COT CAMPBELL was continually baulked for a run between the 400m and 100m poles, and was fairly flying at the finish. NEW CALEDONIA and SILVER MASTER both ran on well from off the pace when 2nd & 3rd respectively in the MR80 Handicap over 1400m.
Finding Extra Vaal 29 June A maiden juvenile plate got proceedings underway on the inside track on Thursday and in what proved to be the faster of the two 1200m events victory went to the favourite MOHALLELA. Up with the speed throughout, Mike De Kock’s charge was headed by CARMALITA 100m out, but fought back gamely below the distance to score by a half. Three of the afternoon’s eight races were maiden events over 1700m and quickest home amongst these was AMERICAN INDIAN. Sent off a strong favourite in an event that was priced up as a boat race, the son of Traffic Guard was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead going through the 400m and comfortably accounted
for the staying on pacemaker LLANDUDNO (the second favourite) by four and a half. The faster of the two 1400m races was the MR74 Handicap in which TRADING PROFIT registered his fourth career victory. Without a win in 16 starts coming into the race, Michael Azzie’s charge raced in midfield for most of the journey. He ran on strongly over the final 400m and under a well-judged ride from Piere Strydom he got up late to deny the front running VULCAN. TITBITS TUNDRA TAITA had a ton in hand when beating the all-out SUMMER SUN by just three quarters.
You And Var Fairview 30 June Impressive in the fastest of the five 1200m races on the turf track on Friday was VOUS ET VAR when taking his tally of wins to three in the MR87 Handicap. Nibbled at on course into 37/10 from 9/2, Alan Greeff’s charge raced a little detached at the back early on. The field was always tightly bunched though and he was only four lengths off the pace when the race began in earnest. He cut through the field quickly when given rein and won going away by two and a half after striking the front 160m from home. The listed East Cape Breeders Stakes over 1200m topped the bill and in a time 0,7 seconds slower than that of Vous Et Var, the best handicapped runner in the race CLEAR SAILING duly landed first prize. Freely available at 4/1 on the off the Argonaut mare sat in midfield during the early part of the race. She was always travelling well and ridden to lead
250m from home she kept on strongly late to beat the five-timer seeking EASY STREET by a half. The easiest victory in terms of distance was that of CLOUD ATLAS when getting off the mark in the maiden juvenile plate over 1000m. Prominent throughout, this daughter of Royal Air Force put her head in front 300m from home and cruised clear in a good time on the day to score by four and a quarter. TITBITS Having his first outing since relocating to the Eastern Cape, the 3yo grey BAFFERT ran out a very easy winner of the maiden plate over 1200m. The newcomer JUNGLE FAIRY ran on well from midfield when comfortably accounting for her nine rivals in the opening maiden juvenile plate over 1400m.

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 7th - SUNDAY 9th JULY 2017
S
21
Currently leading the South African general sires list, Maine Chance Farms sire Silvano dominated the Vodacom Durban July.
ilvano, champion sire in South Africa in 2013, was represented by five runners in the July this year and they duly did their sire proud, with Marinaresco beating paternal half-brother Al Sahem into second, with Silvano’s Gr1 winning daughter Nightingale running fifth. Both Marinaresco and Nightingale are out of mares by dominant broodmare sire Fort Wood, while Al Sahem (whose dam is out of a Fort Wood mare) is bred on the same Silvano/ Al Mufti cross as champions Bold Silvano and Kings Gambit. Nightingale’s second dam is by Al Mufti – whose daughters have built up a formidable record when sent to Silvano, and also include this season’s Track And Ball Derby winner Mr Winsome. It is not the first time the progeny of Silvano have dominated a finish in the July, with Silvano sons Power King, Punta Arenas and Tellina running 1-23 in the 2015 July. Silvano now has four July winning sons to his credit – Bold Silvano, Heavy Metal, Power King and Marinaresco. He is the first since Montrose to have been represented by sons who have won the July on four occasions . Montrose’s three July winners include the dual winner Milesia Pride, who won in 1949 and 1950, and Silvano is now officially responsible for more individual July winners than any other sire in recent memory. More than R6 million clear on the general sires list, Silvano has enjoyed a remarkable year. He has been represented by 13 individual stakes winners this year,
and had an exceptionally strong crop of three-year-olds. Silvano sophomores in 2016-2017 include Al Sahem, as well as dual Guineas winner Janoobi, Gr1 SA Fillies Classic winner Orchid Island, SA Oaks winner Wind Chill (as well as runner up Oriental Oak) and multiple stakes winning filly Epona - another out of an Al Mufti mare! He has also got an exceptionally well bred crop of 2yos representing him this year, with Silvano’s tally of 2yo winners (at the time of writing) already standing at five, and this is bound to increase before the end of the season. Silvano’s 20 Gr1 winners are made up of 13 males to win at the highest level which suggests he may be a slightly superior sire of colts than fillies but his overall record with siring top fillies is still well above average. The most successful son of German champion Lomitas, Silvano is one of the few remaining champion sires descended from Triple Crown winner Nijinsky II, whose son Dancing Champ sired July winners Dancing Duel and Space Walk. While the Nijinsky II male line may be fading from the major global picture, inbreeding to the 1970 champion is enjoying increasing success. This pattern can be found in the outstanding stallions
Silvano Scat Daddy and Tapit. Inbreeding to Nijinsky via Silvano has already produced Guineas winner and July third Tellina, as well as Equus Champion and Dubai Gr1 winner Vercingetorix. Nijinsky II also appears in the pedigree of Garden Province winner Bela-Bela, whose outstanding dam Mystic Spring is a daughter of the Nijinsky II sired Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Royal Academy. Silvano is yet to be represented by a Gr1 winner as a broodmare sire –unusual for such a top class sire, whose first local crop was born in 2004. The best runners produced by Silvano mares thus far include Gr2 winner Cosmic Light, Victress Stakes winner Goodtime Gal, and recent stakes winners Louisiana (The Scarlet Lady), and Joking (Dahlia Plate). Both Cosmic Light and Joking are daughters of Silvano’s stablemate Querari.
Lassie Dear’s July impact It should not be forgotten the impact that the great mare Lassie Dear (Buckpasser) enjoyed at Greyville on Saturday. Lassie Dear’s name can be found in Saturday’s big race winners Crowd Pleaser (Betting World 2200), Desert Rhythm (Golden Slipper), and July runner up Al Sahem. Captain Splendid, the disqualified winner of the Gold Vase, is another carrying this great mare in his pedigree. Desert Rhythm (Mambo In Seattle) is inbred to Lassie Dear (surely one of the most underrated factors in the local stud book), through her sire and damsire Al Mufti. Lassie Dear’s greatest grandson A P Indy is the sire of Judpot, responsible for Golden Slipper second Let It Flow.
