Can Cape Classic winner Table Bay turn the tables on Gold Standard on Saturday?

Gr3 MATCHEM STAKES at Durbanville this Saturday

T

At last! Some serious racing to get excited about. The first rays of the Cape Summer Season will shine down on the revamped Durbanville on Saturday where the R250 000 Gr3 Matchem Stakes heralds the start of bigger things to come in the months ahead.

he 2017 renewal of the Matchem – the 59th by our calculations - is as good as anything we have seen in recent years and the ten horse contest looks set to get the hearts beating and the pulses racing. Of special interest will be the return to action of one of the best 3yo’s of last term in Glen Kotzen’s Gold Standard. The Cape Guineas runner-up and Selangor Cup winner has not seen action since his fourth behind globetrotter Whisky Baron in the Sun Met and can be expected to be marginally ring rusty after his 36 week break. He showed his paces in a public gallop recently and would only have to be in the right mood to win this.

Enigma

Joey Ramsden’s Cape Classic winner Table Bay is proven a few lengths inferior to Gold Standard – he gets a kilo from him - and has his first start since going unplaced behind Sail South in the Champions Cup last season. Something of an enigmatic talent, the son of Redoute’s Choice races over arguably his optimum trip and Anton Marcus rides him. Now a 7yo, Silicone Valley gives Glen Puller a chance to win the Matchem for the fifth time. The son of Jay Peg is very game and looks a

definite quartet inclusion – but has fitness on his side as a potential gamebreaker for the big guns. Andre Nel’s La Favourari boasts four wins from his last four starts but tries the 1400m for the first time and is another who could need the outing after a 14 week break. The family has won over further and he is an interesting poser for punters. What do they say about backing a winning horse till it loses?

Jockey Choice

The 2016 Gr1 Gold Medallion winner Always In Charge has his first run in 36 weeks but is a talented sort who cannot be underestimated. The fact that Anton Marcus could have ridden him suggests though that Table Bay could have his measure. Strong front-runner Milton will be blitzing from the 1 stall-gate and looks to give the Marwing-Bill Prestage combination a repeat of their recent Listed Settlers Trophy win. The 6yo son of Lateral has yet to win at feature level and tries Durbanville for the first time. Copper Force has his first start since winning the Thukela Handicap on July Day. This will be the son of Royal Air Force’s first Durbanville start and the draw could count against him over the 1400m.

over the Kenilworth 1400m at the end of last season and surprised on his return, when chasing Percival home over a too short 1000m last time. The son of Black Minnaloushe has won 5 of his 12 starts and steps into the higher league for the first time on Saturday. The combination of Corne Orffer and Brett Crawford won the race last year with Captain America. Last season’s Cape Winter Series bridesmaid Our Mate Art returned to action with resolve after a four month break to get the better of the highly vaunted 3yo Cot Campbell over the Kenilworth 1400m last time out in his first run as a 4yo. The son of Artie Schiller tended to lack the killer instinct in a few of his races last season, but must be considered if he maintains the improvement. Icon King has always been highly regarded by his astute trainer Mike Stewart and the son of Rebel King looks likely to show plenty of cheek. That said, he takes a step up in class and has a tough task on these weight terms. Gold Standard and Table Bay look set to fight this out. Don’t underestimate the sharp Silicone Valley, while Our Mate Art could be ready to fulfil his early promise.

Matchem Magic Saturday’s Durbanville feature is named in honour of the famous Thoroughbred foundation stallion, Matchem (1748 – 1781). Matchem - also spelled Match’em, possibly after the jockey Match’em Timms - is a direct male line descendent of the Godolphin Arabian - or Godolphin Barb as he is also known - and along with Eclipse and Herod is considered one of the three 18th century stallions that produced the Thoroughbred sire-lines of modern times. The earliest traceable record of the Matchem Stakes in South Africa dates back to 1958. It was open to 2 and 3yo horses and run on 19 April over 1400m at Kenilworth for a stake of £1,250. The idea of running juveniles against three-year-olds over 1400m in April, at what was more or less weight for age terms came in for a lot of criticism, with many feeling it was too much to ask of the youngsters. However, on the day a total of 6 runners faced the starter, including two 2yo’s (Kowloon and Avon) and four 3yos. The 1958 running of the Matchem proved the quality and strength of the juvenile crop. Although the game filly Kowloon cantered to post as the favourite, she failed to show and it was left to Mr A Kruyer’s 2yo colt Avon, who scored a smart win – under a certain M Strydom! Big names are synonomous with the Matchem Stakes. It was traditionally run at Kenilworth but was switched to Durbanville in 2010. The Vaughan Marshall-trained Captain Al won it in the hands of Jeff Lloyd in 1999 when the gross stake was R100 000. With the race being run on Saturday for R250 000, we have hardly kept pace with inflation! The prestige has continued into the 21st century with, amongst others, dual SA Horse Of The Year Variety Club taking the honours in 2011 and Champion Miler Capetown Noir winning in 2013. A pointer to a possible outcome on Saturday could be the fact that the most successful Matchem trainer of the 21st century is Milnertonbased Glen Puller. The former jockey won it in 2002 and 2003 with Sevilliano, ridden by Gerrit Schlechter and Karl Neisius, respectively. Puller also trained the 2005 winner Great Rhythm, who was piloted by Greg Cheyne – who rides Silicone Valley for him on Saturday – and his most recent success came with Reim in 2014. The son of Ashaawes was exported to Mauritius after his thrilling win and never raced here again. Reim was ridden to a memorable victory by Glen’s late son Chris. Another chapter of this fascinating race will be written on Saturday.

Have A Good Time WAYNE MARKS

Captain's Flame wins the 2016 Diana Stakes - will she play second fiddle to Goodtime Gal this time?

Race fitness could be key to unravelling the R250 000 Gr3 Diana Stakes puzzle at Durbanville on Saturday. With a decent draw, an impressive pipe-opener under the belt and top man Anton Marcus at the controls, Mike Robinson’s Goodtime Gal boasts the credentials to win the 1400m contest.

Gr3 DIANA STAKES at Durbanville this Saturday

T

he Diana Stakes honour roll boasts star names of yesteryear. Peter Kannemeyer’s gallant Mrs Noah won it twice. Remember Terrance Millard’s Party Time? And Mike Bass’ top-class Sweet Chestnut was yet another superb fairer sex galloper. Fast forward to the present and the race is run at weight-for-age plus penalties for Gr1, Gr2 and Gr3 victories in the past 18 months. The SP top-rated Goodtime Gal looks to avenge her defeat of 2016 and bumps her conqueror Captain’s Flame in what could be an intriguing sub-plot to an interesting – albeit disappointing in numbers – contest.

A daughter of Royal Air Force, Goodtime Gal became her sire’s first stakes winner when scoring in the 2016 Gr3 Victress Stakes and this Gr1 placer certainly has the makeup to win this after an encouraging 1200m win last time. Defending champion Captain’s Flame on the other hand returns from a 17 week break and has not won since she beat Goodtime Gal by 0,75 lengths a year ago. There is little to choose on pure ability between the two – but we will side with the Robinson runner on fitness. Joint topweight Gimme Six won the Gr3 Umzimkhulu Stakes and Gr2 Daisy Fillies Guineas before winding up a terrific first KZN Champions Season with a fourth behind the now

retired Bela-Bela in the Gr1 Garden Province Stakes. She has not run for 14 weeks since then. Glen Kotzen’s 2016 Gr2 Golden Slipper winner Final Judgement has not won in over a year but she has been on the fringes when competing against the best of her generation and could strip fresh and keen after a ten week break. The daughter of Judpot has her first start at Durbanville and is a dangerous pacy sort. Winter Oaks winner Whose That Girl ran a decent enough return race when running fourth and under 3 lengths behind Goodtime Gal over 1200m. She will be infinitely more effective over the extra 200m but has some catching up to do on the class fillies rated above her.

Seattle Gold returned to racing after a three month break when showing some pace and dropping out to 4 lengths off Goodtime Gal last time. Even allowing for improved fitness, she faces the Robinson runner on 1,5kgs worse terms but is a gutsy galloper who will enjoy the step up in trip. Second of the Snaith attack, the dual Gr3 winner Nordic Breeze returns from a ten week break after a gutsy win in the Champagne Stakes at the end of last term. The daughter of Windrush appears most effective at 1400m. Extradite is the second of the Candice Bass-Robinson contenders and is a consistent 4yo who may be outpointed on these weight terms.

The versatile daughter of Mambo In Seattle is a winner at this track and could sneak a back-end of quartets position at very best. Goodtime Gal ticks all the boxes. She is the pick to beat Final Judgement and Gimme Six.

New Predator - rested but very classy

Gr2 JOBURG SPRING CHALLENGE at Turffontein this Saturday

A

The high-class 2016 Charity Mile winner New Predator looks to go close in the hands of the in-form Gavin Lerena when he takes on eight rivals in the R400 000 Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge on the Turffontein inside track on Saturday.

s is the profile of many of the class runners all over the country this weekend, the 5yo entire returns from a rest and this could throw the formbook upside down. New Predator hasn’t seen action since running a commendable third behind KZN

Champion Sprinter Bull Valley in the Gr1 Mercury Sprint some 12 weeks ago but is a horse who runs well fresh. On his best performances, he should just about win this. Azzie hotshot Will Pays is in prime form and as a winner of 2 of his last 3 starts, the son of Imperial Stride is a serious threat from the 1 gate. His victory when running on strongly

to beat Angel’s Power over 200m shorter in the Gr3 Spring Spree Stakes last time out was eyecatching. Include in all bets! Matador Man has not raced since running on very well for third behind Sail South in the Champions Cup at the end of last season. The son of Toreador is very capable but could be run off his feet at this track. The Judpot filly Bi Pot comes off a 14 week rest since going unplaced behind champion Bela-Bela in the Garden Province Stakes. The daughter of Judpot is using this as a pipe opener and can be watched over further later on in the season. Finchatton is the second of the Tarry runners and looks comprehensively

Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge PAST WINNERS held by Will Pays on their Spring Spree clash. The now 7yo Bezanova has his first run in 46 weeks since a smart win in the Victory Moon Stakes. He is bound to need the run. Wonderwall has not raced since a well beaten third behind the highly regarded Mustaaqeem in the SA Nursery. The son of Querari only has his fifth start but has shown enough to be a lurker with just 51kgs on his back. Mike de Kock’s Mujallad is another promising 3yo who comes off a rest after running a cracking 3 lengths off Eyes Wide Open in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes. He won 2 of his 6 starts prior to that and

A determined Gavin Lerena drives Forest Fox up to get the better of Fransie Herholdt on the PE raider Classify

GRAND HERITAGE Vaal last Saturday

A

Past SA champion jockey Gavin Lerena maintained his stranglehold on the R750 000 Grand Heritage when he won the Vaal cavalry charge for the second year running on Saturday.

frica’s busiest horserace saw 27 runners charging down the 1475m straight, and it was Lerena who produced a finely judged ride to follow up on his win on Irish Pride in the inaugural running last year. This time he partnered the Paul Peter-trained Dupont 6yo Forest Fox to a thrilling victory over gallant PE challenger, Classify. A juice detox diet was the recipe that saw the 32 year old in the right shape for the 56,5kgs allotted

to Forest Fox in the well endowed handicap and things worked out according to plan. Joey Piper, Vulcan and the KZN visitor Secret Captain led the early charge down the middle inside, with Piere Strydom and Arctica trying their luck alone on the outside. Gavin Lerena had Forest Fox beautifully relaxed about six lengths back down the inside. At the 800m he started moving his charge up slowly and with Collen Storey throwing a curved ball at his opponents by bursting clear at the

400m on Starret City, things looked desperate for some. With Starret City shortening his stride and Classify finding his, Lerena wasn’t panicking and he got Forest Fox into top flight into the 200m. Forest Fox got the better of a brief duel with Classify and went on to win by a head in a time of 88,03 secs. Dorrie Sham’s Classify ran a cracker and looks on track for a possible tilt at the Summer Cup on 25 November, Starret City moved up dangerously late in the race, and has proven consistent – the Geoff Woodruff runner banked R65 000 for his efforts in third. Morpheus finished in fourth and with Saftote paying 6 places, Social Order and Zouaves were the others that mattered as they ran fifth and

sixth respectively. Stakes of R10 000 were paid all the way down from sixth to fifteenth finisher – Tandava being the fortunate last recipient of that bonus. Gavin Lerena, who had the pick of a few runners, said that Forest Fox was well weighted and had came well at the same time last year. He thanked the Peter team and the owners as well as his family for the support. “I had him switched off and in a rhythm following Classify the whole way through until the 700m. Classify came right back to challenge us, but Forest Fox was not throwing this one away and he dug deep,” said Lerena. Trainer Paul Peter, who enjoyed a great day with four winners, told

how his son Tony had suggested that they prep their horses for this meeting. “I am so pleased for my special owners, the Nassif brothers, Hassen Adams and Bernard Kantor. This horse hasn’t got the biggest heart. He needs a specific type of ride – Gavin gave him that today!” he added. Forest Fox was bred by Peter de Beyer and is a son of Dupont (Zafonic) out of two-time winner Fort Vixen (Fort Wood). He cost R210 000 at Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 2. Stakes placed as a 3yo and third in the Heritage Consolation at the corresponding meeting in 2016, Forest Fox is now a winner of 5 races with 14 places from his 35 starts. This was his best pay day and he took his earnings to R1 019 250

Aldo Domeyer and Alan Greeff won 50% of the Fairview Friday eight-race programme between them, including the R75 000 Racing Association Plate with the Sail From Seattle colt, Seattle Flame. With Greg Cheyne on Whisky Baron duty at Newmarket, Domeyer has been doing a great job in what Cheyne once suggested was ‘the best job in SA racing’. In the ten horse 1400m feature, Valentinik led Cloud Atlas and Copper Trail throughout, with Domeyer experiencing a slightly awkward ride on Seattle Flame in fourth. In the run for home, the filly Cloud Atlas moved up dangerously but had no answers for the superior dash of Seattle Flame, who clocked his fourth career win. Seattle Flame went on strongly to withstand a late rattle from Kimberley raider, Bongo Dance. Copper Trail hung on for third. Seattle Flame won by 1,50 lengths in a time of 82,95 secs. Bred by Ascot Stud, Seattle Flame is a son of the deceased Sail From Seattle (Gone West) out of the one-time winner Forsythia (Strike Smartly). He races for Greg Bortz and Braam van Huyssteen and cost R130 000 at the National Yearling Sale. He has won 4 races with 3 places from 7 starts for stakes of R214 575.

Double Does It The 2016 Gr2 Hawaii Stakes

winner Captain Aldo was the rank outsider in the R150 000 Heritage 1200 (C&G) but the 7yo son of Captain Al showed his younger opposition a thing or two with a gutsy display of galloping. St John Gray and Raymond Danielson opened the day with Combat Muster in the first race and followed up with a well-taken double, as Captain Aldo tracked leader Alfolk all the way and moved forward at the 300m to draw clear for a good win by 1,25 lengths in a time of 68,66 secs. He started at 14-1. The more fancied Romi’s Boy got going too late and managed to oust Alfolk and bank second cheque. Captain Aldo was registering his 8th win with 15 places from 38 starts and took his stakes earnings to R1 066 200. The hardy gelding races in the interests of St John Gray and wellknown Cape restauranteur, Aldo Girolo. He was bred by Boland Stud and is a son of Captain Al (Al Mufti) out of the three-time winning Cuddle Me (Elliodor).

Grand Muzi

The Grand Heritage day bumper Pick 6 at the Vaal was opened in good style by the Highlands-bred My Friend Lee who won the first of the day’s quintet of features with a class performance. The non black-type R150 000 Heritage 1200 (F&M) attracted a field of eight and after Old Em had led for most of the trip, Muzi Yeni got My Friend Lee, who had stalked the leader all the way, to produce a sterling late surge to get up and win. The grey started at 4-1 and clocked 70,71 secs to win by 0,40 lengths. Old Em was not disgraced in second and she held off a late surge by Lady Starlett, who finished well to bank the third cheque. The disappointment of the race was the runner-up’s stablemate Simply Royal, who faded out to last. Bred by Highlands, the Lucky Houdalakis-trained My Friend Lee is a 4yo daughter of Pathfork (Distorted Humor) out of Sister Sheila (West Man). A R300 000 National 2yo Sale buy, My Friend Lee has been a model of consistency and has won 5 races with 6 places from 15 starts and stakes of R388 825.

Perfect Palace

The well-related Imperial Stride colt Pera Palace produced an impressive display of speed when he spreadeagled his field to win the R135 000 Sophomore 1000 at the Vaal. One of four winners on the afternoon for trainer Paul Peter, Pera Palace was never headed and blitzed away from his eight opponents to win at generous odds of 14-1 by 2 lengths in a time of 57,23 secs. A major interest in this race was the first run as a 3yo of the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship winner Brave Mary. Returning from an 18 week break and racing in the Team Valor International silks for the first time, she was off the gallop early but challenged late to run second. The run will bring her on. Bred by Riethuiskraal, the winner is a son of Imperial Stride (Indian Ridge) out of the five time winner, Perfect Guest (Northern Guest). That makes him a half-brother to the top class 2002 Gr1 Paddock Stakes winner Crimson Palace (Elliodor). The latter was ironically bought in training by Team Valor International – who race the second-placed Brave Mary. Pera Palace was well bought by Paul Peter at R40 000 off the 2016 CTS Ready To Run Sale. He has won 2 races (both over 1000m) with 1 place from his 4 starts for stakes of R156 875.

Not Bad, The Lad The fast improving 4yo Dan The Lad

maintained his consistent form with a convincing win in the R250 000 Heritage Consolation over the Vaal 1475m. Gunter Wrogemann had the Paul Matchett-trained Dan The Lad relaxed on the inside from his 1 gate and near the rear of the field for much of the journey. With Scott Kenny’s Tokyo Drift showing the way, Dan The Lad was given the nod at the 300m marker by Gunter Wrogemann and he went on powerfully to nab Tokyo Drift and drew away to win by 2 lengths in a time of 87.4 secs. This proved to be an unpressured faster time than the Grand Heritage! Dan The Lad was signed for by Mike Bass at R120 000 off the 2015 CTS March Yearling Sale. Bred by The Alchemy, he is by Gold Circle Derby winner Dan De Lago (Encosta De Lago) out of four-time winner Ashbrook (Doowaley). The mare is a half-sister to July winner Trademark (Goldmark). Dan The Lad has won 3 races with 7 places from his 13 starts for stakes of R373 025. While the track was said to be in good condition, the draw bias was vividly illustrated – the inside being clearly superior.

Give Durbanville A Chance Goose Settles In Sweetly fter receiving rave reviews following the unofficial opening on Saturday 23 September, the picturesque country course came under fire from some quarters after a midweek racemeeting last week. One trainer suggested that the surface was ‘too firm’ and there were also indications that the new design and fast top had in fact produced more unfair racing than ever before, benefitting front-runners and promoting cowboy antics by the jockeys. This was refuted by Kenilworth Racing and the National Horseracing Authority. Saturday proved, however, that the track will in time prove to be a genuine boon for local racing and a platform for fair results, where draws are not the death sentence they used to be, and where all runners can win – if good enough. This was amply displayed by the cracking win from a 13 draw over 1200m by the Candice Bass-Robinson trained Johnny Black, who looked to be in trouble late, before being switched in for a run and changing legs like a good horse to win the second going away. In the fifth race the Brett Crawford trained Gimme One Night was lagging in arrears as Solar Night showed the way, but switched out for a run he produced the acceleration up the middle of the track to register an overdue second victory in the hands of Corne Orffer. After Zeb’s cracking last gasp strike at Durbanville on Wednesday, MJ Byleveld and Vaughan Marshall produced the lucky last goods again. This time it was with recent Oratorio maiden winner Nordic Chant who flew up on the wide outside of the track late to

New Ashburton trainer Louis Goosen is loving life in KwaZulu-Natal. The former Vaalian teamed up with jockey Gunter Wrogemann and his staunch owner Mario Ferreira to grab a hat-trick of winners – including a top three finish – at the weather affected Greyville meeting on Sunday.

fter 67mm of rain in a short period of time, Gold Circle switched the turf meeting to the poly and while only 8% of the carded runners cried off (despite the loss of eight races last Friday evening) due to the surface switch, it did not prevent the Goosen ‘Wonder Water’ team from running riot. And nobody is in better form than the underrated Wrogemann. With a confidence boosting victory aboard Dan The Lad in the Heritage Consolation at the Vaal just 24 hours later, the Gauteng rider produced the finishing touches to the Goose’s hard work for the big spending Ferreira. The trio’s first winner came aboard the Australian-bred Di Mazzio in the fourth, a Graduation Plate over 1400m. With all the focus on the two local hotshot 3yo’s, Varallo and Monks Hood, the 4yo was given a clever

ride from his 1 draw to register his second win. Di Mazzio was no cheapie at A$240 000, but looks to have plenty of ability. The Pippa Mickleburgh-bred Dynasty filly Gratuity was knocking hard for her second win and she duly arrived in the sixth, an MR 84 Handicap over 1000m, to beat stablemates Captain’s Girl and debut winner Yaas, to register the Goosen trifecta. Gratuity cost R700 000 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale. The Goosen hat-trick was completed by the promising Ideal World gelding Zen Arcade, who made it two from three in the seventh race, an MR 91 Handicap. Zen Arcade is the R500 000 KZN Yearling Sale purchase who caused such a stir when runner up on his debut in the BSA August Million. He should pay to follow – as should the entire Louis Goosen Ashburton attack!

CLIFFTOPS Third in the Gr2 Prix Dollar on Saturday and worthy of a mention is Highlands Stud triple Royal Ascot winning 2018 shuttler Canford Cliffs’ 3yo son Salouen. Trained in Lambourn by Sylvester Kirk, Salouen broke the two-yearold course record time at Windsor with an impressive display in a mile maiden last season. He went on to acquit himself well in two of Europe’s top juvenile Gr1 races over the same trip. A horse who enjoys fast ground, he is one for the notebook.

Bush Hill Stud stallion Flying The Flag’s full sister Rhododendron caught the eye on Arc day with a hard-fought victory over stablemate Hydrangea in the Gr1 Prix de l’Opera – a second career Gr1 victory for the Irish Champion Juvenile filly. Rhododendron had been beaten by Arc winner Enable in the Oaks in June – no disgrace, after what we saw at Chantilly on Sunday!

Vaalrassic Park Who said there were no celebrities on course? Four dinosaurs of the racing media ranks were spotted by our roving photographer at the Vaal on Grand Heritage day. With over 500 years race reporting experience between them, the aged quartet paid their own way and coughed up the ten bucks admission fee. What happened, we wonder, to media privileges? From left to right, Die Beeld’s Etienne Louw, published author Charl Pretorius, Business Day’s globetrotter Dave Mollett and Wessel Moolman of the Daily Despatch and Citizen .

Summerhill Indian Ridge stallion Linngari was a stakes performer in eight different countries on four continents and his son Garlingari could have booked his trip to Hong Kong in December when he won the Gr2 Prix Dollar at Chantilly on Saturday. He added to his tally of five stakes successes and a cracking third in last season’s Gr1 Prix Ganay when following up here on his win in the Gr3 La Coupe de MaisonsLaffitte just a fortnight earlier. Trainer Corine Barande-Barbe, who won the Prix Dollar three times previously with former stable star Cirrus des Aigles, described Garlingari as a fighter. The Gr2 Prix du Conseil de Paris could be next in advance of the gelding’s global campaign. The athletic chestnut Linngari produces over 60% winners to runners from his lifetime statistics and stands for a reduced fee of R12 000 this season.

Cape-based Aldo Domeyer was propelled to the head of the SA National Jockey log courtesy of his four-timer for Alan Greeff at Fairview on Friday and a double for Candice Bass-Robinson at Durbanville on Saturday. With a big away job, Domeyer could go close to securing the championship.

Whipping Boy

Craig Zackey is enjoying a cracking season – although he seems to have been a tad under the whip during September. The former champion apprentice was fined on four occasions under Rule 58.10.2 – for striking his mount more than three times on consecutive strides. Cutey Me (Fairview 15 September), Zeal And Zest (Turffontein 25 September), Gold Medal Girl (Turffontein 25 September) and It Is Written (Fairview 26 September) were the rides in question. He was fined R750, R1000 and R1500 respectively – and oddly enough only R750 for his fourth and most recent contravention.

Congratulations to former trainer and TBA Yearling Inspector Tobie Spies on his appointment as manager of Favour Stud in the beautiful Stilbaai. The vastly experienced Tobie fills the position vacated by Renate du Plessis on her recent emigration to Australia.

WEIGHT

A MOMENT Interesting to read Ridgemont Stud Manager Craig Carey’s statement to Gold Circle journo Michael Clower that Sun Met winner Whisky Baron had pulled up well after his unplaced run at Newmarket last Friday (see page 9) “He lost 10kg in the race, which showed how much he needed it,” said Carey.

The numbers 7-4-24-15 produced what must be an all-time record quartet payout amount of R620 501 on the Grand Heritage last Saturday. The sum of R439 916 was carried over – till where and when, we don’t know.

Bob’s Your Uncle Former Mike de Kock galloper Mubtaahij won the $300,000 Gr1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday. It was Mubtaahij’s first victory since the Gr2 UAE Derby and broke a 10-race winless streak for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. Now with Bob Baffert, Mubtaahij was a €450 000 purchase for Jehan Malherbe’s Form Bloodstock at the Arqana Sale in France in August 2013.

Baron Can Bounce Back While Beat The Bank continued his rapid rise through the ranks with a dominant display in the Gr2 Shadwell Joel Stakes at Newmarket on Friday, South African racing fans may have been slightly disappointed with the run of Sun Met champion, Whisky Baron. Phillipi trainer Brett Crawford’s first international runner, ridden by our East Cape Champion jockey Greg Cheyne, finished 14 lengths behind the top-class winner Beat The Bank, a horse going places. Greg Cheyne drew the whip at the 400m as Whisky Baron’s flame flickered briefly, before tapering out. A margin of interference in running, months of inactivity, over 33 weeks off the track and unsuitable underfoot conditions will be reasons to suggest that the son of Manhattan Rain is certainly worth another chance. The Brett Crawford team were reportedly ‘not unhappy’ and plans are still on track. While Hong Kong on 12 December is just around the corner in global horseracing terms,

there will be hope that Crawford can work some magic with the top-class gelding in advance of his taking his place in either the Gr1 Longines Hong Kong Cup 2000 or the Gr1 Longines Hong Kong Mile – both races are run for a purse of about US$3 million apiece. For now Friday belonged to Beat The Bank. Formerly trained in Ireland by Darren Bunyan, the three-year-old made his first start for Andrew Balding when landing a conditions race at this venue back in May. He disappointed in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, but has since won a Listed prize on the July Course and a Gr3 at Goodwood, and was the 11-8 market leader to continue his winning spree on Friday. Which he did in impressive style.

Dettori Makes Arc History

T

Frankie Dettori, who rode Edict Of Nantes to victory in this year’s’ Investec Cape Derby at Kenilworth, won a record fifth Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on the John Gosden-trained Enable in Chantilly on Sunday.

he 3yo Enable, sent off the 10-11 favourite, led for most of Europe's richest horse race to secure Dettori and Gosden their second Arc win in three years. Cloth of Stars (25-1), ridden by jockey Mickael Barzalona and trained by Andre Fabre, was second. Third-favourite Ulysses (9-1), trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Jim Crowley, came third. The victory capped a memorable season for Enable, in which she secured five consecutive Group One victories - in the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks. Winning trainer John Gosden, who also won with Golden Horn two years ago, told BBC Sport: "She's very special and she was well positioned by Frankie in order to show her sheer class and brilliance. "It's all about the filly and the owner-breeder Prince Khalid [Abdullah]. He bred the mother and for his farm to produce something like this

Frankie Dettori is exciting for us all. "I think it would be wrong to run her again this year. I think to go to the Breeders' Cup would be wrong, too hard on the filly. "If she's in great form we should consider next year. Maybe it would be wonderful to go to the opening of the new Longchamp and try to do it again." Dettori also won it in 1995, 2001, 2002 and 2015 to become the all-time Arc champion jockey.

Exceptional First Foals

Europe's Premier Yearling Sale, Book 1 of the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, which started on Tuesday and runs to Thursday 5 October, could be the next step towards the healing of a twelve year long rift between two major racing and breeding powerhouses.

ColT ex light of Dawn (Trippi)

Coolmore’s John Magnier | RACING POST When the hammer fell on Lot 35 at the Goffs Orby sale in County Kildare last Tuesday, a yearling filly by Galileo changed hands for €1.2m and the rift between Europe’s biggest racing and bloodstock operations seemingly drew to a close. The filly, a daughter of the Group Two winner L’Amour de Ma Vie, was bought to race for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, and the owner’s long-standing boycott of yearlings by stallions which stand at John Magnier’s Coolmore Stud seems to be over – just in time for Tattersalls Book 1, in Newmarket this week! The cause of the rift between Magnier and Sheikh Mohammed has never been publicly revealed, though any number of theories have circulated since September 2005, when the Sheikh’s team abruptly stopped bidding for the offspring of Coolmore stallions at the high-profile Keeneland sales in Kentucky. While the Sheikh has since bought horses in training sired by Coolmore stallions, including New Approach, who won the 2008 Derby in the colours of Princess Haya, his wife, the boycott of Coolmore-sired yearlings was maintained until a few weeks ago, when a handful were purchased in the United States. Significantly, though, the €1.2m purchase last Tuesday was the result of a bidding duel between John Gosden, representing Godolphin, and John Magnier’s son, MV Magnier, which carried the

Sheikh Mohammed | GODOLPHIN.COM eventual selling price into seven figures, more than double the €580,000 paid for the day’s second-top lot. Though he is now within sight of his 70th birthday, Sheikh Mohammed’s will to win on the turf is apparently undiminished. If Godolphin’s purchase on Tuesday really does mark the end of his Coolmore boycott, prices for Europe’s most choicely-bred yearlings at Tattersalls this week could be heading through the roof!

SA Buyers Spend In Ireland

T

South African interests Mayfair Speculators and Form Bloodstock were active at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in County Kidlare, Ireland, last week, where a well related son of Frankel topped the charts. The brother to two group winners was purchased by agent Justin Casse on behalf of Zayat Stables for €1.6 million.

wo millionaires by Galileo (a filly) and Frankel were the highlights of a sale well supported by a huge international cast of buyers , with BBA Ireland the leading buyer across the two days with 41 yearlings purchased for €4,373,000. The Castlebridge Consignment was the leading consignor with 24 yearlings selling for a total of €2,759,000 and an average of €114,958. Thoroughbreddailynews reported that Mayfair Speculators, in partnership with Coolmore, spent €2.6 million on Galileo yearlings at Arqana in August and, making their first visit to Goffs, the team of investors also gave €625,000 for Barronstown Stud’s half-sister to Gr3 Minstrel Stakes winner Air Chief Marshal (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) (lot 455).

Markus Jooste Her 21-year-old dam, the Aga Khan-bred Hawala (Ire) (Warning {GB}), has been a hugely reliable producer, with 11 winners to her name including the listed winners Slip Dance (Ire) (Celtic Swing) and Misu Bond (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Buying in various partnerships across the two days, including with Form Bloodstock, Mayfair Speculators made their trip to Ireland worthwhile by getting involved in nine yearlings bought for a total of €2,355,000. Mayfair Speculators also teamed up with Jehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock to buy Barronstown Stud’s Australia filly (lot 265) out of Weekend Fling (Forest Wildcat), a half-sister to Gr1 Arkansas Derby winner Archarcharch (Arch), for €220,000. In total, 14 Australia yearlings were sold from 16 offered for an average of €101,143. His Coolmore studmate No Nay Never also made a splash thanks to support from the Mayfair Speculators and MV Magnier, who purchased two of his highestpriced colts at Goffs for €350,000 (lot 239) and €300,000 (lot 39) apiece. A total of 373 yearlings were sold for a total of €40,702,500 out of 433 offered, resulting in a 86% clearance rate. The 2017 gross was up 1% from last year’s total of €39,925,000 for 363 head sold. This year’s average of €109,122 was down 0.8% from last year and the median €65,000 was down 2% from last year.

Pathfork’s Super Saturday athfork’s daughter My Friend Lee made it career win number five when she won Saturday’s Heritage 1200 Fillies & Mares at the Vaal. Trained by Lucky Houdalakis, and bred by Highlands Stud, My Friend Lee stayed on gamely to lift the 1200m contest by 0.4 of a length from the smart Old Em. The four-year-old, a member of her sire’s very first crop, has now won or placed in 11 of 15 outings with Saturday’s win pushing her earnings to just shy of R400 000. Out of the West Man mare Sister Sheila, My Friend Lee was a R300 000 purchase from the 2015 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale. Pathfork was also responsible for Saturday’s eye catching debut winner Promise, who provided Grand Heritage winning trainer Paul Peter with another win at the Vaal. Bred by Willem Engelbrecht Jr, Promise

ran on smartly to score a long neck win first time – defeating some well bred individuals, including Gr1 winner Al Sahem’s half-sister Hafla, in the process. Pathfork’s third win on Saturday came in the form of Bobby Dazzler, one of three winners on the day for trainer Brett Crawford. Bred by Ridgemont Stud, the lightly raced Bobby Dazzler made it win number two with a fast finishing score over 1200m at Durbanville. Like Pathfork’s Gr3 Godolphin Barb Stakes winning son Red Chesnut Road, Bobby Dazzler is closely inbred to the great sire Sadler’s Wells - a pattern also found in Arc winner Enable’s pedigree! A son of champion sire Distorted Humor, Pathfork is from the same family as champion sires Redoute’s Choice, Northern Guest and Try My Best, with the latter the male line ancestor of top sires Dark Angel, Acclamation and Marju.

eter Gibson is the nominated representative, so I gave him a call to find out more about Brigtnumberten, Eightfold Path and Hartley SA (Pty) Ltd. Mr Guo is a businessman from the Chinese mainland and his involvement with South African racing stems back to a trade mission Peter carried out alongside Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe. “One of the meetings I set up was with the China Horse Association and we invited them to come and inspect South Africa on a protocol basis, but also to develop a relationship on an official basis.” “In 2012, Racing South Africa hosted an official delegation of 6 people from the China Horse Association and included in the group was Mr Guo. By the end of the trip, Mr Guo said he loved the country and asked us to buy him a horse. We purchased Tipo Tinto in training and he won 3 for Guo in his now distinctive blue and red colours.”

Eightfold Path

Shortly after Mr Guo started his foray into South African racing, Eightfold Path came onto the market. Bred by the Niarchos family’s Flaxman Holdings, Eightfold Path is by Giant’s Causeway and is the first foal out of French Champion race filly, Divine Proportions. He campaigned in the Niarchos colours in France under Pascal Bary. A precocious juvenile, Eightfold Path won his first race over 1200m in July of his 2yo career. He was then tried in the 7 furlong Gr3 Prix la Rochette, finishing 3rd and only 2 lengths off subsequent Champion Two Year Old Colt in France and now successful stud stallion, Siyouni. He closed out his 2yo career by winning the Prix Eclipse at Maison Lafitte. Eightfold Path was one of Bary’s leading hopes for the 2010 Classic season, before being sidelined by injury during the build up to the French 2000 Guineas. As a 4 and 5 year old, he won 2, including the Grand Handicap over 1600m at Deauville before being shipped to South Africa, where he had a few starts under the care of Mike de Kock. However, Eightfold Path was already focussing on other things than racing, so they decided to sell him as a stallion prospect. “Robin Bruss approached me and we bought him as a syndicate,” continues Peter. “At the time, Await The Dawn and Eightfold Path were the only two Giant’s Causeways to come into the country, which is quite surprising,” he muses.

Stud Career

Standing the stallion in KZN came about because by that stage Mr Guo had acquired a few mares who were all based in KZN. “The whole deal

was put together over one of the KZN stallion days,” recalls Peter. “We asked Scott Bros whether they were interested in standing him and they said yes and put together a number of others. Mr Guo has retained 64% and the rest is syndicated across various studs in KZN. He’s averaged around 55 mares per year from 2013. His first crop are now 3yo’s and based on the quality of foals he produces, we’ve upgraded the quality of mares we’re sending to him, so his best foals are probably the ones on the ground now.” Asked to describe Eightfold Path, Peter says, “He is a short, powerful horse with a lovely shoulder and a good hindquarter. He stands over a lot of ground for a small horse and interestingly, he is throwing size - most of his foals are bigger than he is, but Eightfold Path was a first foal,” notes Peter. “He had this beautiful big action on the track. His female line is outstanding and his dam was an absolute freak. She won 10 out of 11 starts, of which 5 were Gr1’s and she beat the colts.” Apart from Divine Proportions, her dam produced multiple Gr1 winner Whipper and the family goes all the way back to Shirley Heights and Pentire. “It’s a beautiful family,” emphasises Peter. “No matter what he leaves behind, his females will leave their mark.”

Off The Mark

Given Eightfold Path’s precociousness as a racehorse, it has

been a long wait for his first winner. mare, Glittering Temple, that is “It did surprise us a little,” Peter showing promise. There was no admits, “but after Brigtnumberten number nine and then of course won, there was another winner the there’s Brigtnumberten, which has following week (Esploratore – trained just won two in a row.” Brightnumberten is the first foal by Alec Laird) and it’s been great to see Brigtnumberten now win two on out of a Joshua Dancer mare, Summer Dew. “Although he’s neat the trot.” “If one looks at Giant’s Causeway, and well-balanced, he was small, so his nick has been with Seeking The we decided to race him ourselves Gold mares, so we’ve deliberately and protect the dam, who is just gone out and looked for daughters starting her broodmare career. Roy of Windrush for him and Esploratore has always been bullish about the is out of a Windrush mare. horse, even though he's not the Brigtnumberten is out of a Joshua biggest. He’s always shown ability, Dancer mare, so you’ve got Danzig but as Roy said in his last interview, onto Storm Cat. But he’s had a good he’s quite feisty, so it took a little spread and also has some lovely time for him to mature and for the foals out of Jet Master and Western stable to get to know him, but I think Roy's team has Winter mares, so handled him really time will tell.” His female line is given him Eightfold Path outstanding and his dam well, enough time and stands at Scott was an absolute freak placed him well.” Bros for a fee of “I was quite R10k. “He always has been R10k which we feel is fair,” impressed with his second win in says Peter. “However, in a market particular and how he handled the where everyone is discounting, we’re loose horse and quickened well. Hopefully he can continue to progress certainly negotiable.” and get the extra furlong, but Roy Brigtnumberten will pick his races as and when they Mr Guo’s company in China is come up. And we need to see what called Bright Industrial Trading Co, the handicapper does,” he adds. which is what the horses are named after in numerical order. “We Name Change avoided one or two, such as 9 which Mr Guo has subsequently changed is not considered very lucky. We’ve his company name and now runs his had Brigtnumbertwo, three and four. operations as Hartley SA (Pty) Ltd. Brigtnumberfour is a listed placed “All the new horses will be named filly out of a full sister to Noble Heir Hartleyone etc,” laughs Peter. (Kahal) who won the Computaform “Hartleyone (an Eightfold Path 3yo Sprint and is now at stud in Australia. half brother to Brigtnumbersix, from Brigtnumberfour is now at stud and the immediate family of Kundalini) is has just produced a filly by Bold with Alec Laird. He is a big, rangy Silvano. Brigtnumberfive is a 5yo horse, so we’ll wait and see what he Kahal mare out of the 4 time winning does.” Saumarez mare, Star Role. She is “I’m interested in how Eightfold talented, but somewhat injury prone. Path’s later maturing progeny will Brigtnumbersix is by Visionaire and is perform. Admittedly he didn’t get with Lucky Houdalakis and has won the best mares in his first season, 2 from 5 starts. Brigtnumberseven but he still got one or two that look has retired. Brigtnumbereight is like they have the right ingredients an unraced Eightfold Path filly, the and it will be interesting to see how first foal of Listed winning Windrush they come out as later horses.”

Hot on the heels of notching the first winner for Eightfold Path on 9 September 2017, Brigtnumberten posted his second win in as many weeks, for trainer Roy Magner and Hartley SA’s Hui Guo. The promising colt now has 2 wins and a place from 7 starts.

Expanding interests

It is always encouraging to see foreign interest and investment in our local industry and Peter reports that Mr Guo is enjoying his South African venture. “He’s now got 68 horses under his care dotted around the country and he’s using a number of different stallions – not just Natal based ones. He’s also got horses in training in most centres now. He loves South Africa and has brought his family out on numerous occasions. He’s got a real feel for SA and has bought into the idea that this is an area with enormous scope to increase values once we solve our export issues.” “Last year, Hartley SA embarked on a strategy of upgrading our bloodlines with a view to the longer term breeding interests we are developing. We bought a nice selection of horses from the 2016 National Yearling Sale including the recent debutant winner, Salimah (Trippi), who makes her way to Cape Town for the coming season. Others include promising types like What A Player (What A Winter) with Alan Greeff in Port Elizabeth, Seattle Spark (Sail From Seattle) and Aldo’s Chase (Oratorio) with Dennis Drier in Durban and Pride Of Place (Black Minnaloushe) with Roy Magner in Johannesburg. We also invested in a good number of broodmares at various sales around the country and bought some nice individuals at this year’s yearling sales.”

Shared Vision

“With the closure of Horseracing South Africa (Pty) Ltd, I now work for industry on a part-time basis, so am able to look after Hartley SA’s interests in my private time. At the end of the day, we’re all aligned in the same objective, which is to access foreign markets. Guo is doing a lot of work in places like China, Singapore and Korea on our behalf – he shares the same vision as the rest of us and it’s nice to have a foreign investor looking at similar objectives.” “For example, we shipped Guo’s top colt, Welsh Emperor (runner-up in the EC Derby), out of the country with the flexible view of either going to Singapore for better prize money or taking our chances at a sale and seeing how the market responded to him.” They offered him at Tattersalls July sale and he was knocked down for 78,000 gns. “We were pretty happy with the return in Rand value, the only risk being whether one is prepared to commit 4 months and R400k to get a horse there. He was bought by a Saudi contingent to race in the UAE and it shows that a horse out of PE with a nice profile and sound track record is desirable to the foreign market. Had he been year younger, we might have got double.” Also, like a lot of the new Asian investors in Australia, Mr Guo has an Australian division as well, but it’s purely trade and based on pin hooking. “He’s just started that, supported by James Bester, the South African born bloodstock agent who also does most of Sabine Plattner’s work,” explains Peter. “I introduced Mr Guo to him and he does a lot of consultancy work for him. South Africans stick together wherever we are in the world.”

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 6th - SUNDAY 8th OCTOBER 2017

T

Journey, Monterosso, Arabian Queen, Hunter’s Light, Left Hand and Wuheida. Sadler’s Wells is also found in the pedigree of Dubawi’s Prix du Jockey Club winning son, New Bay, as well as the sire’s Hong Kong Cup winning sire son, Akeed Mofeed, and 2017 Prix Saint-Alary heroine, Sobetsu. Both Left Hand and Wuheida are out of mares by Singspiel, whose sire, In The Wings (Sadler’s Wells), is from the same family as Dubawi.

Darley’s outstanding stallion, Dubawi, second only to Galileo as Europe’s premier sire, has enjoyed yet another magnificent season in 2017.

he only Gr1 winner sired by ill-fated champion, Dubai Millennium, Dubawi enjoyed a notable Gr1 double this weekend, firstly with his son, Mubtaahij, picking up his maiden Gr1 victory when landing the Gr1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday. Formerly with Mike de Kock, the now Bob Baffert domiciled Mubtaahij (a half-brother to local broodmare, Saint Mary) could give Dubawi a first Breeders’ Cup win when he lines up in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November. Dubawi also made it back to back wins in the Gr1 Prix Marcel Boussac, when daughter, Wild Illusion, won on Sunday. The race went to Dubawi’s daughter, Wuheida, 12 months ago. Wild Illusion had won easily first time out, before finishing third at her only previous outing, in the Gr3 Prix d’Aumale. It is not the first French Gr1 won by Dubawi fillies in recent times, with his daughters, Left Hand and Bateel, lifting the 2016 and 2017

Prix Vermeille and Sobetsu landing the 2017 Prix Saint Alary. Dubawi’s success was carried further afield than Europe this weekend, with granddaughter, Bonneval, winning Australia’s Gr1 Underwood Stakes. Bonneval is a daughter of Dubawi’s classic winning son, Makfi.

Inbreeding

Seven Up

Dubawi has enjoyed another remarkable year in 2017, with the triple G1 winner represented by seven individual Gr1 winners this year. Dubawi daughters filled the first three placings in the recent Gr1 Prix Vermeille. Also this year, Dubawi has been represented by top flight winners in three different countries – North America, France and Ireland, with his progeny winning four Gr1 features in France in 2017 thus far. Another son, Frontiersman, ran second in the 2017 Gr1 Investec Coronation Cup, a race won in 2016 by Dubawi’s son, Postponed. Dubawi also had seven individual Gr1 winners to his name in 2016, and had 10 top flight winners in the Northern Hemisphere one year prior to that.

Dubawi The grandson of Seeking The Gold has also enjoyed plenty of success with his 2yos this year, with Wild Illusion joining Anna Nerium (Gr3 Dick Poole Stakes) and Glorious Journey (Gr3 Prix la Rochette), as group winning juveniles. His other promising 2yo winners this year include the regally bred pair, Emaraaty and Ghaiyyath. One of the gaps on Dubawi’s impressive resume (he has more than 200 stakes horses to his name, including more than 30 Gr1 winners, and his runners have banked in excess of $150 000 000) are the English classics, as, with the exception of the 2000 Guineas - won

Avontuur Star Recovers From Illness

T

“Var is really doing incredible work at the moment as he takes up some of the slack due to Oratorio being booked off for the next few months, as he recovers from Laminitis,” says Avontuur Estate GM Pippa Mickleburgh.

he sad news relating to one of Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s respected stallions, became known last week, when the rest of his booked coverings had to be cancelled, so that the team could concentrate on getting him back to full health. “He’s a really relaxed horse, with a laid-back personality, so he is an easy patient,” explained Avontuur GM Pippa Mickleburgh in a press release issued on Thursday 28 September. “We hope to have him back to full strength by next year at the latest, and as he’s reacting so well to the medical regime at the moment, we could even hope for an earlier recovery, with a bit of luck,” she says. In the meantime Pippa is very happy with the current crop of

Oratorio foals and says that she has an excellent group of Oratorio’s to line up for the yearling sales in 2018. “It is a horrible experience for all of us at the farm to see him in pain, especially as his progeny are starting to show their class on a regular basis, with another wonderful win for him yesterday at Durbanville with Orakal. But the most important thing now is to concentrate on his health and to get him fully on the road to recovery.” Pippa thanked the industry on behalf of the Avontuur team for the good wishes which have been streaming in and stressed that the support was appreciated. Ed- Laminitis is a painful inflammatory condition of the tissues (laminae) that bond the hoof wall to the pedal (coffin) bone in the horses hoof. It can affect any horse, of any age or sex, at any time of the year.

by sons Makfi and Night Of Thunder - Dubawi is yet to strike a blow in England’s premier 3yo contests. Despite his 3yo’s having yet to land a 2400m English classic, Dubawi’s older runners have enjoyed plenty of success over a mile and a half, having won such Gr1 2400m contests as the King George, Coronation Cup, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Prix Vermeille and Canadian International. The sire has proven particularly effective when mated to mares from the Sadler’s Wells male line. Star performers bred on the Dubawi/ Sadler’s Wells line cross include the Gr1 winners Night Of Thunder,

Inbreeding to Shirley Heights, whose son, Deploy, is damsire of Dubawi, has also proved very successful for Dubawi. This pattern has produced four time Gr1 winner, Al Kazeem, the above mentioned Left Hand and Wuheida, Gr1 Premio Roma/Gr1 Jebel Hatta hero Hunter’s Light, Sobetsu, Gr1 British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes victress, Journey, and Arabian Queen, who downed champion Golden Horn in the 2015 Gr1 Juddmonte International. Arabian Queen has a very interesting pedigree in her own right, as she is a direct descendant of Etoile de France, the ancestress of Dubawi himself. Dubawi is well and truly established as the greatest descendant of Mr Prospector in Europe and he and his descendants look well set to continue to act as a foil for the abundance of Northern Dancer line mares the world over.

Time For The Everest

Nadeson Park stallion Time Thief’s smart daughter In Her Time staked her claim for a slot in the A$10 million The Everest after defeating a star-studded line-up in Saturday’s Gr2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

Oratorio

“I was lucky enough to snag the ride at the trials at Rosehill and I haven’t had a horse trial like that in a long while, especially since I’ve been home from Singapore,” said jockey Corey Brown. “She’s the real deal and showed it here today.I think there would be no doubt she would be competitive in The Everest.” In Her Time’s trainer Benjamin Smith said he would keep the phone on in anticipation of getting an Everest call-up. The Everest will be run at Royal Randwick over 1200m on 14 October and is the richest turf race in the world – and third highest overall, behind the Pegasus World Cup (U$15.9 million, US) and Dubai World Cup (U$13.2 million), both run on dirt. In becoming Australia’s latest equine millionairess, the 5yo daughter of Time Thief registered her sixth win with 3 places from 15 starts for stakes of A$1,013,225.

In Her Time was consigned to the 2014 Inglis Classic Yearling sale by Kanangra Stud, where she failed to make her $40,000 reserve. She is the seventh foal of the Zeditave mare Hell It’s Hot, a halfsister to Gr3 winner Hot As Hell, Listed winner Flaming Hot, Hong Kong Stakes winner Craig’s Dragon and the 5-time winner Harlem Heat the dam of Listed winner Harlem River. A top class racehorse, Time Thief won or placed in six of his seven outings. Winner of the Listed Zeditave Stakes, Time Thief’s top performances included a second in the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas, where he was beaten by Whobegotyou, and a third in the Gr1 Australia Stakes, to champion Apache Cat. An A$2 million yearling buy, Time Thief is a son of triple Australian Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice and is one of five stakes horses produced by the Gr3 Tristarc Stakes winner Procrastinate.
