Milnerton trainer Bill Prestage is one of the respected older generation of veteran trainers who continue to hold their own and tick over the winners with a small string at his disposal. He saddles the Western Winter 8yo Red Peril in a bid to register the double in the R150 000 Listed Settlers Trophy at Durbanville on Saturday.

dour out-and-out stayer, the Daytona-bred Red Peril was the subject of a particularly innovative ride at the unofficial opening of the ‘new Durbanville' track at the corresponding meeting last year, when, after a sluggish start, he went round his field and caught them napping to register a 5,25 length win. Red Peril needs a true test of stamina and he relished the tough gallop that he set that day. He hasn’t won since but has earned at three placed efforts and is an honest sort who doesn’t have a lot of race options on the programme. Red Peril isn’t getting any younger and it is the Snaith’s progressive 4yo Magnificent Seven who could have his measure as he goes for a hattrick of wins and his fifth win in six starts. The son of Horse Chestnut tries the 2400m for the first time but should have no difficulty in seeing it out on the manner of his recent 2000m victories. His unraced dam is a full-sister to Model Man Gr1 performer Pratique and he relaxes smartly and can turn it on when required. The Cape Winter Derby third placer Ballad Of The Sea, one of a trio of runners from the Candice

Bass-Robinson yard, returns after an 11 week break and goes straight in boxing, without the benefit of a pipe-opener. The son of Teofilo is lightly raced and has shown ability at 2500m, although only a maiden winner. He can assert at his first start as a 4yo but may lack for genuine race fitness and may have bigger fish to fry. His stablemate Benjan was beaten 1,25 lengths by Magnificent Seven last time and now meets the Snaith galloper on 1,5kgs better terms over the extra 400m. The son of Fort Wood has not won in ages but did finish third in this event last year behind Red Peril and is a nominal half kilo better off this time round. The one-time winner Woodland’s Forest from the Burger-Van Reenen training combination has lacked punch at the business end of matters and looks limited at best. Pacific Chestnut is the third of the Bass-Robinson trio. The son of Horse Chestnut has his first start in 11 weeks since running a poor race in the Winter Derby when beaten 10,50 lengths by Doublemint. This one-time winner won at his fourth start over 2400m and is likely to mature and improve in his 4yo term. The Snaith’s 7yo Master’s Eye lumbers a back-breaking 65kgs and is clearly the proven class act in the

race. The 7yo Jet Master gelding has run well fresh and can go the trip. He has not run for 11 weeks and may lack the edge to pace it with his younger and fitter stablemate, Magnificent Seven. Andre Nel’s Silvano mare Sister Soozie was an impressive courseand-distance winner at her last start

Heritage Moves Following gallops and a track inspection by various interested parties, a decision has been made to postpone the scheduled WSB Grand Heritage and WSB Heritage Consolation to Saturday 13 October. THE remaining races scheduled at the Vaal this Saturday will now be held on the Turffontein Inner track. Speaking on Tellytrack on Tuesday, Clyde Basel said: “It was felt that the track is close but not quite there yet. So to avoid any possibility of problems arising after a few races had been run on Saturday, we have decided to postpone.”

Local Legend The 83 year old Bill Prestage who saddles Red Peril in Saturday’s feature, took over from his father in 1978. In 1994 he stopped training for seven years due to business commitments and then started again in 2001. HE dates back to the heyday of the Durbanville Gymkhana Club and, like our Personality Profile Paul Garlicki (see page 13), also rode at the Cape Hunt amateur meetings. One of three boys, his brother Bobby rode for Heine Schultz, while he rode mainly for Georgie Brown and CB de Meillon. He cut his race riding teeth alongside the likes of Terrance Millard and Ralph Rixon. “Before us, there was Willie Kleb. Colin Tyler was a top rider – he became the manager of Highlands. Arthur Gray also rode for Heine Schultz. I think the other guys are all gone,” he mused in a 2017 interview with the Sporting Post.

South African champion jockey and champion apprentice Lyle Hewitson suffered a blow to his confidence in advance of the PGI Jockey International at Kranji on Tuesday when he was suspended for careless riding at his first meeting in Singapore on Sunday.

t was a rude introduction for the superbly talented Hewitson who partnered Dicton, who finished third in the day’s feature, the $150,000 Gr3 El Dorado Classic, behind SA trainer Ricardo Le Grange’s King Louis. The Stipes reported: App L Hewitson, the rider of DICTON, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that he permitted his mount to shift inwards, at the Winning Post on the first occasion, to a point where there was insufficient room for GOLAZO, resulting in that horse being severely crowded for room and eventually losing its rightful running.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account his record, guilty plea, the degree of interference and carelessness and submissions from Hewitson that he was engaged to ride at the Singapore Race Meeting on Tuesday. The Stewards determined to suspend his licence to ride in races and acting under MRA Rule 48(5), the commencement of the suspension was deferred to begin on Wednesday, 03 October 2018 until Sunday, 07 October 2018 both dates inclusive (two Singapore Race Days). He was advised of his Right of Appeal. The Jockey Challenge Victor Ludorum was won by Hewitson's stablemate, Aldo Domeyer.

Emerging stayer King Louis finally put his sizzling turn of foot to winning effect in a big race when he claimed the SGD$150 000 Gr3 El Dorado Classic in dominant fashion on Sunday.

In It For Life

It was 79 years ago that his late Dad escaped the German invasion of Poland and commenced a journey that was to end in the Mother City at the tip of Africa and sow the seeds of one of Cape racing and breeding’s most popular modern era foundation families.

oday Paul Garlicki reflects on a life immersed in horses, the success of Connemara Stud and how the game and the underlying industry has evolved – in some respects for the better. But not always so. After 30 years of breeding champion racehorses – the Sportsworld star La Deportista was one of their first - Paul and Lindi Garlicki run their breeding and boarding operation on a sprawling 160 hectare spread of an almost hidden gem of paradise nestled in the foothills of the Perdeberg, near Windmeul in Paarl. They are expecting 40 foals to join the 43 mares and 24 odd yearlings that inhabit the magnificent paddocks, with lush green carpets interspersed with splashes of spring flower finery. It’s a wonderfully relaxing place – ask their Head Groom Ace who has been with the family for 39 years! A stone’s throw from their well-known counterparts Varsfontein Stud, Sorrento and the Kotzen family’s own ‘Southfork’ of Woodhill Racing Estate, the Garlicki family residence is a Cape Dutch homestead dating back to 1802. Paul is 61. With his wiry frame and sporting his trademark Adidas specs, he frankly doesn’t look a day older than somebody 30 years his junior and regularly runs the 12 km gravel road round-trip from the beautiful house to the Voor Paardeberg Road that carries the unwitting world on their daily business past the Garlicki Family’s patch of horsey heaven. It is hardly surprising to hear then that the top showjumper and amateur jockey regularly heads the log in the 60 plus category in the local 5km Park Run. “I have many 18 and 25 year olds puffing away behind me. It keeps one motivated! I have made a point of keeping fit all my life. I still ride competitively and coach aspiring dressage and show-jumpers. It keeps

me busy. In fact, I have no doubt I could ride in another Cape Hunt race if those ever had to return. In fact, I would love to do just that!” The former Marist schoolboy, who grew up in Plumstead, had the seed of equine passion planted by his late Dad. “My father was a small-time punter and owned shares in a few horses. It was a chance visit to the Rodeo Riding School in Ottery at the age of 12 in 1969 that stoked the fire. Before I knew it we had five horses and I was experiencing those extraordinary sleepless nights that so many youngsters of that era enjoyed on the eve of the Cape Hunt & Polo Club meetings, which were held in the school holidays.” Paul rode many winners, including the likes of Theo de Klerk’s top division stars Mithra and Persian War, as well as the former Cookie Amos galloper Godspeed. “My first horse was a son of Sympathetic, called Baker Pan. He was trained by Alec Soteriadis and was retired after he threw a jockey that some may have heard of at an international jockey meeting here at Kenilworth. That jockey was Lester Piggott. I loved riding Baker Pan as Lester was one of my childhood heroes.” But it is the first winner that he trained on the amateur flat that holds special memories. “It was an 800m scurry. His name was Shepherd Boy. They had flag starts. Karen Park just had to hang on for dear life as he took off and ran away to win well! It feels like yesterday!” Paul was keen to pursue a career in training when he left school and got an offer from Chris Snaith to come and work for the current SA Champion operation at a time when Justin and Jono were in push-chairs.

“I lived in the Northern Suburbs and had to think about the costs and time of travelling across the Peninsula in the early morning hours. By chance, I was giving Graeme Hawkins riding lessons at the time and he was working for Selwyn Simpson at Computaform. Graeme was moving to Joburg and he suggested I take the job. I was keen to join the Snaiths but the better hours swayed me and I joined Computaform.” Paul was at the form guide for 8 years. He says he loved the work, with his racing passion, analytical mind and bent for statistics making it more of a hobby than a job. As things happen in the corporate world, Computaform was undergoing change and after agonising over the decision, declined the offer of a transfer to Johannesburg, Paul found himself retrenched after 8 years of employment. He then joined the SA and Cape Turf Clubs and worked in the scratchings department – a time before many of the NRB personnel of today were born. “The jockeys used to pitch up and watch the scratchings and hustle for rides. Glen Hatt was young. I remember Andrew Fortune entertaining us. Those were great days and we somehow got the cards together with a lot of hard work.” After 30 years of breeding high quality racehorses, where does Paul see the sport’s future? “I know it may sound corny or cliched, but this game needs heroes. It’s crazy, but when I was riding Cape Hunt races, even the bank tellers acknowledged me. In those days people knew Michael Roberts, Mazarin, In Full Flight. Racing was in the mainstream and we were respected. I am not sure what has gone wrong, but should we really be blaming alternative entertainment and social media?” He suggests that stars like Lyle Hewitson, S’manga Khumalo, Muzi Yeni and Aldo Domeyer are marketable commodities and should be in the forefront of a revival strategy. “Lyle is so eloquent. He is so talented. He is a walking billboard

for horseracing. Bling and Muzi, as well as Aldo, are remarkable talents and real characters in their own right. We need to stop preaching to the converted and get our stars out there. My son – a mountain biker – was in GQ magazine. He was interviewed on the Dan Nicholl Show. That reaches a wider audience. Gives credibility to the sport. Gets people interested. Instead the only time racing ever reaches the media mainstream is with bad news – animal cruelty or corporate sensation.” Paul said that he felt that while it was no silver bullet, twilight meetings at Durbanville with live music was also a way of creating a respectable and desirable destination. “I read the Riaan van Reenen interview in Sporting Post. He has made some really good points. Durbanville is a perfect venue. It has ambiance. Plenty of parking. It is central. Maybe run a jackpot of four races, get a nice band and some decent food. So then one appeals to the punter, the family and the casual visitor. Why aren’t we trying it and making it a value-for-money and enjoyable outing?” Connemara Stud have over the years proven very competitive, pacing it with the powerful and bigger studs on average earnings per runner stats, as well as percentage winners to runners. “It’s not a fairy story, but it is very difficult being a breeder and maintaining one’s head above water today. It costs an average of R100 000 plus the stallion service fee to get a horse to sale. Probably 50 horses out of 400 at the recent national sale made a profit. Look at the gross for the sale and you will quickly see that breeders are subsidising the racing industry on a massive scale – probably R20 million

will be the figure for that one sale.” Paul says that top Gauteng owner and breeder Roland Bouwer is the financial strength behind their operation and that without men like him and Lawrence Wernars pursuing their passion and investing big money, it would be very difficult to carry on. “Last year we subsidised our personal shortfall to the tune of many thousands of rands. But it is our love. Our life. Our passion. We don’t know anything else – and there is little else we’d rather be doing and nothing more satisfying than producing a top horse and watching them progress from foal to first place.” He suggests that the opening of export markets will naturally be a turning point and could be the lifeline that the industry was looking for. “When we sit and chat with a beer in hand it all sounds so simple. Not rocket science. But let’s get our house in order at home and once the export protocols fall away, we are up and flying. It’s not going to happen overnight though.” Paul remembers that his Dad was an ordinary salaried person without family money when he owned horses. “That lower to middle market recreational owner is disappearing fast. It’s economics probably. Let’s face it never have we seen the proliferation of powerful breeder owners that dominate today. I’m not saying it is a bad thing. Without them we’d be in trouble. But the days of growing the audience from a young age like I was fortunate to, appear to have gone for good. Maybe fractional ownership and syndicates are the way to go to bring back the family man and bolster the middle market?”

When we met him at Connemara Stud on Heritage Day he was on crutches and on the long road to recovery after a horror crash saw him hospitalised in Germany. The 27 year old sports star went down heavily during his seeding run at the iXS Downhill Cup in Ilmenau, Germany, in August and broke his femur/hip and suffered a bruised lung. Snaith Power

All six of the Normandy Stud fractional ownership horses will be trained by SA Champion Justin Snaith.

n 4 July 1972, Chris Snaith became the youngest racehorse trainer in South Africa to be granted his licence at the age of 22. After captaining the Western Province show jumping team, Chris hung up his boots and entered the professional paddock. His true love was always horses. In the spring of 1972, with a string of five horses in his stable, Chris Snaith saddled the first Snaith runner. Over the next 30 years,

Chris and his wife Susan shaped the heart of Snaith Racing. The Millennium year saw Snaith Racing transformed into a new era when sons Justin and Jonathan took over the reins. Within a few years the Snaith boys, in their early twenties when they took over, took a mere 22 horses and built up a racing heritage that has seen Snaith Racing become one of the most respected names in the South African horseracing industry.

Judpot Hits Another Four

Varsfontein stallion Judpot was at it again over the past weekend, with the son of AP Indy producing four winners.

Newbury’s SA Connection SA owner Bernard Kantor’s Young Rascal put a disappointing effort in the Investec Derby well behind him when he relished the kind ground at Newbury on Saturday to win the Gr3 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup Stakes. Not sighted since finishing seventh in the Investec Derby, the son of Intello made up for lost time when claiming his second Gr3 contest of the season, and is set to have his sights raised once more.

The winner picked up £34 026 for the 2200m victory. The Chester Vase winner ran a good race under Jim Crowley and lunged close to the line to deny Mirage Dancer – from whom he was receiving 6lb – by a short head.

Scottsville 16 September The 4yo SOCRATES has been going from strength to strength with each outing and he again impressed when gaining his third career victory from just seven starts in the faster of the two 1000m races, a MR80 Handicap. Equally at home setting the pace, or running on stoutly from off them, Shane Humby’s charge made the running here. He found extra when challenged by CHANTYMAN 200m out, and with the rest well beaten he went on to score comfortably by a length and a half. Socrates’ stable companion TRIBAL FUSION also won well on this card when registering his fifth career victory from just 14 starts in the MR90 Handicap over 1400m. Lightly raced for a 6yo, this son of Trippi won with total authority, and that despite being burdened with 62,5kg. In terms of distance the easiest victory on the card was recorded by Sporting Post’s generously priced top bet CAT’S LEGACY. There was no real pace on in the early part of the race and after initially racing at the back, Anton Marcus took Cat’s Legacy to the front 1000m out. He was always in command from there onwards, and cruised clear in the home straight to score by six and a half. TITBITS Despite racing green, the newcomer GENEREIGHT ran on well from the backend of midfield when runner up in the maiden plate for 3yo fillies over 1200m. Flamingo Park 17 September Four of the ten races in the Northern Cape on Monday were run over 1300m and stopping the clock in the fastest of these, a MR62 Handicap, was WINGS N THINGS. Easy to back at 8/1 on the off, the daughter of A P Arrow raced in midfield for most of the journey. She quickened well at the top of the straight and won going away after striking the front 110m from home. Quickest home in the three 1400m races was TOP SALUTE when registering her fourth career victory in the MR72 Handicap. Taken straight to the front by apprentice Lerena, the Main Aim filly led throughout. She was always clear and won without any anxious moments by two and a quarter. There were a number of very comfortable victories on the afternoon, but none more so than that of RICH APPROVAL in the not so lucky last, a MR58 Handicap over 1400m. Always handy in what soon became a very strung out field, the 10/1 shot struck the front 200m out and went on to score very easily by six. TITBITS

Durbanville 18 September

The KZN raider ROYAL KAITRINA made it two from two at the circuit when easily accounting for her thirteen rivals in the MR65 Handicap.

By just 1/100th of a second, the MR81 Handicap won by the 3yo CANUKEEPITSECRET was the fastest of the four 1250m races at the country course on Wednesday. Very tightly bunched throughout, Vaughan Marshall’s charge quickened best of all when the race began in earnest. She struck the front 250m out and eased late won very cosily by two and three quarters. The bill topping MR88 Handicap was by far the faster of the two 1400m races and here the stable of Vaughan Marshall were again on the mark when ZEB registered his fifth career victory. Allowed to drift right out to 15/1 at the track, the son of Pathfork raced second in what very quickly became a strung out field. He put his head in front as they approached the 200m marker and won well by a length from the staying on pacemaker SPECTRA FORCE. A maiden plate for the girls over 1250m had opened up proceedings and here we saw a smart performance from the well-supported newcomer GIMME LONDON. Sent off second in the betting market at 26/10, Candice Bass-Robinson’s charge sat in midfield during the early part of the race. She ran on best of all over the final 400m and with the rest well beaten she got up late to deny the fancied SKYE LANE. TITBITS RIP IT UP and REDIAL both ran on well from the rear when 1st & 3rd respectively in the MR74 Handicap over 1250m.

Four From Four Scottsville 19 September

A maiden plate over 1200m got proceedings underway in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday and here we saw a smart performance from the Dennis Drier trained FRANCISCO. Well supported, as indeed he had been in each of his two previous outings, the Fort Wood gelding adopted a change of tactics here and set the pace. He began to assert his authority going through the 400m and despite being eased down late, he cruised in by five. Two maiden plates over 1400m followed and quickest home in these was MERLIN FROM BERLIN when winning the boy’s affair. Up with the speed throughout, Niklaas Van Wyk’s charge kept on determinedly at the business end of the race and just held on by a short head from the newcomer CLOUDS OF WITNESS. The

runner up had raced in the rear and was flying late. A pinnacle stakes over 1200m topped the bill and in a time 0,58 seconds faster than that of Francisco, the well-supported WYNKELDER registered his fourth career victory. Confidently ridden by Sean Veale, the son of Kahal raced in midfield for most of the journey. He quickened well when given rein and under a well-judged ride he struck the front 80m from home and won going away. Wynkelder is now unbeaten in four starts over this course and distance. TITBITS A runner up in her only previous outing, ELLA’S WORLD won the maiden plate over 1750m going away by five.

First Three Home Turffontein 20 September This was the meeting originally scheduled to take place on the Vaal classic track. Surprisingly the quicker of the two maiden plates over 1000m that got proceedings underway was the work rider’s event in which Paul Peter saddled the first three home. The newcomer PALACE CHAPEL was the most fancied of his five runners in the race and he was indeed first past the post. In touch throughout, the 2/1 favourite struck the front 150m out and won going away from another newcomer in AMERICAN HUSTLE. The only other distance to stage more than one race was 2000m where the faster of the two low grade maiden handicaps was the MR62 affair won by NUNTIUS ORATORION. Sent off a clear favourite at 21/10, Geoff Woodruff’s charge raced in midfield during the early part of the race. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 400m marker and after quickly drawing clear he was eased in the latter stages to score by a very deceiving 2,1 lengths. The stable of Geoff Woodruff were also on the mark when the newcomer ILHA DA VARLETTE got off the mark in the maiden plate for the girls over 1000m. Taken straight to the front by Gavin Lerena, the Var filly led throughout. She found extra when challenged by the odds on favourite 200m out and went on to score with authority by a length and a half. TITBITS Supported into 6/1 from 16’s, COJIMA led throughout, and was always in command when opening her account in the MR60 maiden handicap over 2000m.

The year 2018 marks 50 years since the mighty Mill Reef was foaled. One of history’s greatest racehorses, the Never Bend sired bay won 12 of 14 outings with his wins including the Epsom Derby, Prix de’L Arc De Triomphe, Eclipse Stakes, Coronation Cup, Prix Ganay, Dewhurst Stakes and King George Vi And Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Stakes.

e was rated the fourth top European racehorse in a survey conducted by the Racing Post. Mill Reef overcame a potential fatal breakdown to become Champion Sire twice in Britain with his numerous high class offspring including Epsom Derby winners Shirley Heights (1978) and Reference Point (1987). Also Champion Broodmare Sire in Britain in 1995, Mill Reef’s progeny included eight official champions and The Jockey Club credit him with 63 stakes winners from 394 foals (or an exceptional 16% percent of Mill Reef foals were black type winners). His classic winners included Shirley Heights and Reference Point, Doyoun (2000 Guineas), Acamas (French Derby), Wassl (Irish 2000 Guineas), Paris Royal (Italian Oaks) and Fairy Footsteps (1000 Guineas), while Mill Reef son Lashkari making history by winning the very first running of the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Remarkably, Mill Reef enjoyed a major Derby double in 1978 with Shirley Heights and Acamas emerging from his 1975 crop and it is hard to wonder what else he may have achieved given a longer stud career. But what of his influence today? The last descendant of Mill Reef to garner a major sires title (on the flat anyway) was French Derby winner Reliable Man, who was Germany’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2017. Shirley Heights was by far his best sire son, leaving behind Derby winners Slip Anchor and Darshaan, with the latter becoming a Champion Sire in France and outstanding broodmare sire. While Slip Anchor (whose progeny included the great racemare User Friendly) failed to make an impact as a sire of sires, Darshaan sire sons included champions Mark Of Esteem and Dalakhani –both of whom sired European classic winners. However, Mark Of Esteem (who like Dalakhani is now retired from stud duties) has not left behind a significant sire son. Dalakhani, whose dual Breeders’ Cup

Turf winning son Conduit has failed to make a mark at stud in Japan and is now a National Hunt sire in Ireland, does have Reliable Man to his credit, with the latter both Champion First Crop Sire in Germany and fifth leading First Crop sire in New Zealand back in 2016-2017. However, Reliable Man is yet to sire a Gr1 winner and he needs to do more to feature as a viable contender to carry on the Mill Reef male line. Shirley Heights’ short-lived son Elegant Air threw multiple champion German sire Dashing Blade – himself sire of, among others, current German sire success Lord Of England. However, it is Shirley Heights son Deploy who appears likely to feature in pedigrees for years to come. His Italian Oaks winning daughter Zomaradah is the dam of triple Gr1 winner and exceptional sire Dubawi (who has been represented by five Gr1 winners this year and who is sire of Gr1 producing sires Poet’s Voice and Makfi). Lashkari, while a poor sire, is broodmare sire of Derby/Arc winner Sinndar, whose triple Arc runner up son Youmzain was responsible for 2016 Gr1 Beverly D Stakes winner Sea Calisi . Sinndar is also enjoying ongoing success as a broodmare sire and is already damsire of the classic winners Trading Leather, Encke and Flotilla. Sinndar is also broodmare sire of inaugural Sun Met winner Whisky Baron. Doyoun left behind the Gr1 winners Daylami and Kalanisi (both Breeders’ Cup Turf winners), Margarula and Manntari. While Kalanisi was a failure as a sire on the flat, his paternal halfbrother Daylami (while no star himself as a stallion) has made more of a mark as a broodmare sire. The former Horse Of The Year, whose brief stud career in South Africa yielded the smart fillies Kalami (2nd Gr1 SA Fillies Classic) and Super Elegant (Diana Stakes), is represented at stud by sons Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow and champion Voila Ici.
