ith track management under fire and unanswered questions over the condition of the Vaal surface, the 1475m race has now been split into two heats. Based on three sliding scale tiers of weight, the two races give everybody a chance to hit the big time in terms of a generous cheque and some feature race exposure. Base weights were determined by the handicapper prior to consideration of additional weights for Graded and Listed races. Weights were structured as follows: Tier 1 - 57kg & above / Tier 2 - 53kg to 56,5kg / Tier 3 - 50kg to 52,5kg Additional penalties for the highest Graded/ Listed win in the last 18 months are: Grade 1: 3kg, Grade 2: 2kg, Grade 3: 1kg and a Listed success a half kilo. Ashley Fortune saddles the smart former Candice Bass-Robinson trained Rings And Things. The daughter of Querari looks to have a massive shout on our SP Ratings and her two runs up North have been first class. She was liberally used last time when caught late by former Cape-based stakes performer Rose In Boom and will strip fit and ready. Mike de Kock’s Hakeem, a son of Redoute’s Choice ran a fair third to Prince Of Kahal after five month rest following a fall at Turffontein. A once promising 3yo, it would be folly to disregard his prospects.

The same applies to the Gokhan Terzi-trained Daffiq who has had two troubled outings at his last two jumps. He was not persevered with when beaten 6 lengths by Tsitsikamma Dance and then was lame on the near -fore after a fair effort behind Pietro Mascagni last time. Count Tassilo has not won in ages and pulled up lame when beaten 24 lengths in this race last year by Forest Fox. The 6yo is never far off but will need to find a finish to challenge. Dan The Lad won the Consolation feature on Grand Heritage day last year and is a decent hardknocking 5yo who is capable of a decent effort off his efficient weight mark – but has an awful draw to beat.

The original Grand Heritage favourite, the smart grey 4yo Mardi Gras, has dominated the news in the big race build-up in recent weeks but lines up from an 11 draw in the Grand Series leg 2 on Saturday.

Ashley Fortune’s Tsitsikamma Dance has pulled a 4 draw and gets the blinkers fitted after winning his first start for the new yard at the end of August. While the Grand Heritage was delayed a fortnight, he now runs off a six week lapse and the connections will be hoping that he has held his game. Mike de Kock topweight Mujallad stayed on

Switch & Split! The WSB Grand Heritage, scheduled to be run at the Vaal on Saturday, has been replaced by the WSB Grand Series at Turffontein – effectively splitting the original 28 strong field in two with both 1475m races now run on the inside track and offering stakes of R500 000 each. The Heritage was originally scheduled to be run on 29 September, but was postponed to this coming Saturday due to the track not being race ready. Following a track inspection late on Monday afternoon, the decision was made that the Vaal track would not be race ready come Saturday. The winners of Saturday’s two races will qualify for a match race early in December at the Vaal to determine who carries the title of Series Champion. The stakes of that race will be announced in due course.

well behind the very progressive Chimichuri Run last time out and must have a chance of challenging if reproducing that kind of run – but he has drawn wide. Zouaves is the only Geoff Woodruff runner in the field and the 5yo has maintained a distinquished line of form over an extended period of time. He ran Equus Champion Will Pays to a neck at his penultimate start in receipt of 4kgs and can up his game further to challenge. London Secret is one of the Sean Tarry trio and, while carrying a handy galloping weight of 52kgs, she looks to need to improve on her recent form to have a shout. Lucky Houdalakis’ Huyssteen has performed well at the Vaal and enjoys a nominal 1,5kg swing at the weights with Full Of Attitude for a six length beating last time. The big race combination of Muzi Yeni and Joey Soma team up with Greys Inn gelding Full Of Attitude, a consistent 4yo who could chase quartet honours. A winner of 3 of his 14 starts, he would have an undeniable money chance on best form from the 1 draw. The 2016 Grand Heritage winner Irish Pride is now a 6yo and has not won for some time. The son of Ideal World is known to be a touch in-and-out though and could surprise if in the mood.

Gr2 JOBURG SPRING CHALLENGE (F&M) Turffontein last Saturday

It’s tight but Warren Kennedy keeps Captain Aldo at it to hold Alyaasaat

Gavin Lerena steers Cacapedia to a scintillating win

St John Gray’s battle hardened 8yo Captain Aldo mocked the reality that his better days are behind him when he went from gun to tape to hold off two class 3yo’s and win the R400 000 Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge at Turffontein on Saturday at his 48th career outing.

espite the endless negative publicity, horseracing has some fairytale moments and none less so than at Turffontein on Saturday. The tough as teak 8yo Captain Aldo led all the way at any price under KZN-based jockey Warren Kennedy to upstage two Mike de Kock trained Aussie-bred 3yo’s, who look set to go on and make their mark. In a tricky looking race at weight-for-age plus penalties, the contest was compounded and tricky with fitness concerns overshadowing the form and the obvious form calculations. Returning from a break of 10 weeks since his Premier Champion Stakes victory on Super Saturday. Mike de Kock’s Epaulette colt Soqrat was considered good enough off the 52 kg mark and went off a 5-4 favourite. With Charity Mile winner Hat Puntano slow away, Warren Kennedy took Captain Aldo out

to lead Full Mast and Champagne Haze – and the race was won in the early stages. Riding a superbly judged tactical race, Kennedy gave his mount a breather at the top of the home run and the old man kept finding to withstand a late surge from the De Kock duo – a neck separating him and Alyaasaat at the line – with the winner clocking 87.2 secs. Soqraat was just under a length back in third, with Full Mast not disgraced in fourth. The winning gelding races in the interests of St John Gray and well-known former Cape restauranteur, Aldo Girolo. A winner of 10 races with 19 places from 47 starts, Captain Aldo has amassed stakes of 1 471 450. He was bred by Boland Stud and was a second feature race winning son of Captain Al (Al Mufti) on the day. Captain Aldo is out of the three-time winning Cuddle Me (Elliodor).

With some low mileage on the clock, the lightly exposed Trippi mare Love To Boogie could give the Plattner Racing Team some fun this coming Cape Summer Season.

umping from the widest of the draw after a break of ten weeks, she showed resolve and courage with a hard-fought victory in Saturday’s R250 000 Gr3 Diana Stakes at a sun drenched Durbanville. On a day of rousing and exciting finishes, Love To Boogie came forward powerfully at the 300m after Red Ginger had led the pack, and held on at 11-1 under a determined ride by Bernard Fayd’herbe to hold off a late challenge from Miss Katalin by 0,30 lengths in a time of 83 secs. The favourite and defending champion Goodtime Gal, and the in-form Angel’s Trumpet, looked dangerous and came home strongly late, but were denied and finished

third and fourth respectively. Love To Boogie, who was coming in fresh off her SA Champions Season Listed Off To Stud Stakes victory on the Greyville polytrack, has won 5 of her 11 starts for 2 places and stakes of R463 525. Bred by Anthony Peter and raised at Varsfontein, the winner is a daughter of Trippi (End Sweep), out of Jalberry (Jallad), a dual stakes winner of the Gr3 Pretty Polly Stakes and Listed Goldfields Sprint, who was placed in the Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint. Love To Boogie is a half-sister to 2017 Gr2 Golden Horseshoe winner Purple Diamond (Var), amongst other winners. The winner’s granddam Taineberry won the Oaks.

Irish Mare Flies To Victory

T

Mike de Kock pulled an ace out of the hat at Turffontein on Saturday when the Irish-bred Cascapedia bounced back fresh after a six month rest as she stormed to victory under the in-form Gavin Lerena to win the R400 000 Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge (F&M).

he one-time Vodacom Durban July fancy was rested after an indifferent effort in the Gr1 Empress Club Stakes in April and was having her first outing as a 5yo – technically six months younger than her Southern Hemisphere bred counterparts. Allowed to relax early and expected to need a bit further to show her brilliant best, Cacapedia came hurtling through her opposition from near last with the speed merchant pacesetter Wrecking Ball coming up for air at the 200m. With Al Danza and Ghaalla finishing strongly, Cascapedia sliced down the middle to win by 0,30 lengths in a time of 87.23 secs. Al Danza moved up menacingly down the

outside to shade the winner’s more fancied stablemate into third. Desert Rhythm was left with plenty to do by S’manga Khumalo and ran on from last to grab fourth. A €170 000 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale purchase by Form Bloodstock, Cascapedia has won 6 of her 8 starts for 1 place and stakes of R711 850. A daughter of High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells), Cascapedia was bred by Tipperarybased Camas Park Stud and is out of the unraced Dansili mare Janoubi. The latter is a half-sister to dams and grandams of graded stakes performers in the UK & France, and hails from the female line of champion Al Bahathri.

Gr3 MATCHEM STAKES Durbanville last Saturday

Bridge To The Stars

B

The Cape has sweated through many summers since Milnerton trainer Eric Sands has had a horse really worth getting excited about.

ut Rainbow Bridge’s late victory from off the gallop in Saturday’s R250 000 Gr3 Matchem Stakes at Durbanville, suggests there could be some big moments ahead again as we move into the jet stream of the Cape Summer Of Champions. The low-profile Sands took his licence out 35 years ago and has had his share of top horses – Jungle Warrior, Wexford Boy, Double D’or, Flobayou, Perfect Promise and Hundred Acre Wood, are some that come to mind. And after Saturday’s victory – making it three straight Gr3 successes, and undefeated from 1200m to 1800m, the handsome Rainbow Bridge could be just about anything right now. Not seen since his victories brightened the dead of winter in the Cape Winter Guineas and Cape Winter Classic, Rainbow Bridge’s connections wisely – in hindsight – avoided a dip at the rich cheque on offer in the Vodacom Durban July and have brought the Ideal World gelding back to contest his 4yo term as an exciting, unfinished and untapped product. With his turn of foot, professional attitude and general cucumber cool demeanour, Rainbow

Bridge is looking a dream work-in-progress towards the perfect racehorse. He still needs to beat something of genuine note, but it’s early days and he had the 2017 Cape Guineas winner Tap O’Noth, conceding 2kgs, two lengths in arrears on Saturday. Produced late by the high-riding Bernard Fayd’herbe, who claimed a feature double on the day, Rainbow Bridge was not given a hiding and went on comfortably to beat longshot New Caledonia by 1,25 lengths in a time of 81.98 secs. Last year’s winner Our Mate Art was a further half length back in third, with Tap O’ Noth only getting going late for fourth. A R300 000 National Yearling Sale buy, Rainbow Bridge was bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein and is a 4yo gelded son of Ideal World (Kingmambo) out of the versatile seven-time winner Halfway To Heaven (Jet Master), whose successes included the 2013 Gr3 Prix Du Cap. There is a sentimental connection to the family for Eric Sands, who trained the dam for Gavin Walker until she was sold to Mauritzfontein, in whose silks she raced for Mike de Kock until the end of her career.

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 12th - SUNDAY 14th OCTOBER 2018

Gauteng Track Review

A

John Stuart, recently appointed CEO of Phumelela Gaming and Leisure, undertook to commission a full review of the current track management processes after last Thursday’s meeting on the Vaal Classic track was called off owing to an “uneven and inconsistent track”.

ccording to Stuart, track management and maintenance needs to be aligned to the racing calendar to avoid a repeat of these types of incidents in future. It was also decided to close down the Vaal Classic course for immediate scarification. It will only reopen at the end of November. As a result, all race meetings scheduled for that track will be moved to alternative courses. Last Tuesday a track inspection had also been made after which the track manager, trainers, Phumelela officials, the chief stipendiary Steward and a senior jockey, had concurred that the track was in racing condition. The senior jockey concerned was Deon Sampson, who along

T

with former jockey Andrew Fortune, worked the horses last Tuesday morning. “When I walked the course on Tuesday morning I thought there is no way we could race on Thursday and I expressed my view to Andrew. I found mole holes on the course and reported those to the track manager so they would sort them out. “Andrew also looked at the track and said he was considering scratching his runners because he saw lots of divots in the parts of the course where most of his horses were drawn. “However, Andrew and I then took two horses and raced them over different parts of the track and the course held up well. At no stage did either horse stumble and mine felt safe under me.” The decision was then taken to

My disappointment in the way racing is run in Gauteng has prompted me to put pen to paper to try and get the attention of the powers-that-be, writes Terry Lowe in the Sporting Post Mailbag.

he racing game has been the love of my life for all of my life. My grandfather was a trainer first licensed in 1928 and my father was a trainer. Control of racing in Gauteng has, in my opinion, fallen to the lowest level of all time. I was a Stipendiary Steward both in Natal and in Gauteng for almost 3 years, and have been a trainer continuously for just on 40 years. As a Stipe, my Chairmen were the likes of Jock Sproule, Frank McGrath, and Mike Tillett – all of who were rated as the best. They took no nonsense and ruled with an iron fist. Nothing escaped them and, although not always popular, were highly respected by everyone in the racing community. They were consistent and fair. I also worked alongside the likes of Dudley Feldman and Barry Patterson – both missed nothing and knew every aspect of the racing industry, and were rated as amongst the best Stipes ever. When I was transferred to Johannesburg from Durban, Mr Sproule took me to lunch. He gave me some simple advice – he said never bend a rule and he said I should make sure that one could ever point a finger at me. “Be squeaky clean,” he urged. I can proudly say that in all my years in the racing game I have a completely clean record as far as serious transgressions are concerned. I write this letter as I am extremely disappointed with the

level of control and general running of the sport – an industry I have been involved in all these years. It has deteriorated dramatically and the quality of the people left to run it, as far as their experience is concerned, leaves a lot to be desired. They are simply not experienced enough and are not trained by people who themselves are experienced and knowledgeale. It’s tragic that an industry is run this way. For the punters and the owners and in fact for everyone involved it is an injustice. People invest huge amounts of money and their lives into this industry, and there are things that happen, and that should not happen, or should be at least be controlled properly. I can quote a couple of instances that have affected myself, my clients and my friends. These are not hearsay but are factual instances that occurred. I have always had the utmost respect for the Stipendiary Stewards but on two occasions quite recently could not help myself and told the Stipes that they don’t know what they are doing. In both instances I believe that it was their inexperience which was their downfall – yet they run the show. An industry should be run from the top by people who know every intimate detail and that can lead and advise. That is the problem. I really didn’t even know who to address this to because I don’t know who is in control! The Stipendiary board’s integrity should be beyond question.

stage the meeting at the course. “Obviously it is embarrassing that we got it so wrong but it was a bad judgement call from all parties,” said Sampson. “Unfortunately, our tracks have taken a pounding this winter and we don’t have many options. I have helped out about 50 times on these issues and it is the first time I have got it wrong. The fact that Andrew did not scratch any of his horses tells you he was quite happy to race. Last Thursday’s meeting was called off after the running of three races. This Thursday’s meeting will be moved to the Inside track at Turffontein but as the card has already been printed it will still show Vaal on the cover. According to Thomas Rasasamola, Phumelela’s senior track manager, the Vaal Inside and Outside track, on which the Grand Heritage will be raced, is coming along nicely. “I am confident that the track will be ready,” he said. Press Release issued by Phumelela Gaming & Leisure on 4 October 2018

Unfortunately I know that in the past it hasn’t been. Again I realise it’s not easy to source the right people for the position but if the people above them knew what they were doing the rotten and incompetent apples would soon be sifted out. I think it’s time the racing industry was taken in hand by people who know what they are doing. They need to employ good dedicated people on the ground – let them learn from the experienced people above them and when punters and owners have complete confidence in the control of the industry, you will find turnovers picking up, the local owner base will increase and the game in general will start turning for the better. Racing has been very good to me. I have won many races, including Gr1’s, featured on the top trainers lists, received many awards, took horses overseas and trained in the USA,have visited racing and breeding centres throughout the world, owned and run my own stud farms, and was offered a training position in Hong Kong. It is my involvement in this wonderful profession which prompts me to speak out. Let’s see if the powers that be take note. They should. They need to.

Eye On Summer

S

Mike de Kock’s Cascapedia has rocketed to the top of the Summer Cup betting boards after her impressive win in the Gr2 Jo’burg Spring Fillies and Mares Challenge over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside on Saturday.

he is currently 5-1 with Hollywoodbets, while top Equus Champion Stayer It’s My Turn is 6-1 second favourite in the ante-post market. Gold Circle report that the Irish-bred daughter of High Chaparral is six months younger than her five-yearold contemporaries, being Northern Hemisphere-bred, so will be coming into her own now.

Saturday was her first run since the L’Ormarin’s Queen’s Plate and she improved her career record to six wins from eight starts. The Irish-bred mare will relish the step up to 2000m and the patience the yard have shown, which saw her missing a few engagements including the Vodacom Durban July, looks to have paid dividends. Gomez Breaks Ice

G

Peruvian jockey Carlos Herrera Gomez had his maiden ride on African soil at Turffontein on Saturday, and booted home his first winner when Angelic won at the same track on Tuesday to register an early 25% win strike rate.

omez is the nephew of former jockey Guillermo Figueroa, who retired from riding a number of years ago. Trainer Paul Peter has not always been happy with the support he has been getting from local riders and he appears quite happy to give Herrera a chance while he rides in South Africa. The National Horseracing Authority have confirmed Gomez has applied to ride in this country although he

has yet to apply for a local licence. According to an NHA representative, jockeys can ride in other countries on their licences for three months, as long as they have been given a clearance from their home jockey club. Tabnews reports that it has not been easy to get much information on Herrera because he rode under another name in Peru – Carlos Javier Herrera. In his home country Gomez won the Derby Nacional three times.

Gavin Lerena

Taking The Rough With The

G

At the age of 33, and after an at times rollercoaster ride in his sixteen years in the saddle, former SA Champion jockey Gavin Lerena has adopted a philosophical and positive attitude towards his profession. The relaxed and ‘wholly at peace’ family man has ridden the winners of the first two runnings of the Grand Heritage and was looking forward to an historic hat-trick bid on Saturday – but the Vaal track has put paid to that dream.

avin was sitting watching swimming lessons with his 4yo son Ashton when he chatted to the Sporting Post this week. “Naturally I am very disappointed that the Vaal meeting on Saturday and the Grand Heritage has been lost. But these things happen. Phumelela have taken the bold step to switch the meeting in the face of what I would guess is natural resistance from punters and stakeholders. But it is in the interests of the safety of horse and rider. That has to be a non negotiable and the track is simply not in a condition to carry a full programme safely,” said the top jockey who was down to ride the big race favourite Mardi Gras. Gavin suggested that it was time to go back to the drawing board and revisit the programme and timing of the Grand Heritage for 2019. “The Heritage replaced the Emerald Cup which was run on the sand. It may be time to look at running it later in the term. We can’t tweak nature. There is nothing wrong with the unique big field concept and it does kindle the public interest with all of those horses stampeding down the track. I hope that they can reschedule it and that it will get the publicity it deserves – and for all the right reasons,” he added. With a national log-leading 40% win strike-rate Gavin Lerena is Joe Punter’s newest best friend and has been riding like a demon since he returned to race action in the first week of September, after a dreadful previous season that stretched his resilient mind, body and spirit to the ultimate. In April he broke his right shoulder blade and collar bone in a nasty tumble from Hakeem in the Listed Derby Trial at Turffontein. In January he was overcome by bouts of extreme fatigue and booked off for months after being diagnosed with the Epstein-Barr virus. In October 2017, he was on the sidelines for three weeks following an eye operation.

The previous season he had sacrificed a lead on the National Jockey Log for a spell in the UK, only to find a trainer that was less than accommodating and soured his experience in the racing rich territory. We asked what had given rise to his new determination and red-hot strike-rate. “The time has flown by and I have had my fair share of knocks. Adversity builds character and I have discovered that no hurdles are actually insurmountable.

The human spirit is bullet-proof if one's determined enough to box through and come out the other side of negativity. I have three beautiful children, a wonderful wife and the most extraordinary family support and inspiration. I really have no excuses but to do well! I am loving life and enjoying my riding. I don’t want to say I am content, as that might imply that I am stagnating. To the contrary, I am always out to learn and improve.” And what of the SA Championship title for a second time? “If I find myself in a position where I am within striking distance then I will certainly target the title. For now, I just want to keep riding winners.” He laughed when we reminded him of the 2012 SA championship chase that went right down to the wire at Kenilworth on Tuesday 31 July. Anton Marcus won on Scaky Phane and Pirate Flag to beat him by just a solitary winner. That was despite Gavin breaking his leg four months earlier and being off for six to seven weeks.

“That’s a part of the character inventory of the game. I was devastated at the time. But we grow up. Life goes on and you quickly realise it doesn’t help being stuck ín self-pity and pondering what-could -have- beens or shou;dhave-beens.” Pressure goes with the territory and has always been a close cousin. A son of top jockey Tex, Gavin joined the SA Jockey Academy in 2002 on reflection, a seriously vintage year that included today’s big hitters, Randall Simons, Raymond Danielson, S’manga Khumalo, Muzi Yeni and Richard Fourie. He rode his first winner at Clairwood in 2002 aboard Waves Of Argosy for trainer Jeff Freedman and owners Mr and Mrs Van Der Bank. His longstanding record, held by the legend Muis Roberts for thirty years, for most winners during an apprenticeship, was recently broken by new star on the block, Lyle Hewitson. Winners and experience in such diverse destinations as China, Dubai, England, Mauritius, Hong Kong, Macau and Zimbabwe have shaped the young man into one of our best today. These days he rides freelance, mainly for Geoff Woodruff and Johan Janse van Vuuren. He has plans to ride in the Cape in the Summer Of Champions Season, but says that he will take each day as it comes.

Mardi Gras – Will Be Ready Gavin said that the 11 draw would now be key to the outcome of original Grand Heritage favourite Mardi Gras’ bid to win the Grand Series on Saturday. “I had a feeling that we were drawn on the wrong side at the Vaal on Saturday, but had a plan to drift myself to the middle of the track and make my run from there. Now at Turffontein, the draw will be critical. I’d like to have been somewhere from gate 1 to 7 but have landed 11. It won’t be a walk in the park – but I have a fit and classy horse under me and we won’t go down without a fight.” Gavin was questioned regarding his riding of Mardi Gras when the son of Oratorio ran second to Mr Flood at the Vaal on 4 October. He told the Sporting Post that the kickback on the day in question was reminiscent of Kimberley ‘in the old days’. He also pointed out that his mount had galloped some way after a false start and it took him a while to pull him up. He said he was a talented horse who he felt would develop into a top sprinter in time. He explained to the Board that his instructions were to drop this gelding in and get cover as he has a tendency to over-race when in the open. At the top of the straight, he elected to track Crimson Magic as the kick-back was particularly bad and by slip streaming this horse, it had lessened the impact of the kick-back. Thereafter when he switched his mount out for a run, it hung in from the 300m. Trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren was also questioned regarding the ride on Mardi Gras. He explained to the Board that his instructions to Jockey Lerena was to drop this gelding out in the early part of the race and allow him to run on strongly from the 600m. He further added that he was satisfied with Jockey Lerena’s ride and he has also undertaken to report back to the Stipendiary Board on the well-being of Mardi Gras on return to stables.

Gavin Says… Gavin has some nice rides at Turffontein on Saturday and is hopeful of maintaining the extraordinary win strike-rate that he has achieved since his return from injury. Geoff Woodruff’s Insignis runs in the third race. Gavin says that the mile is the minimum range for the daughter of Go Deputy who may have needed her last when winning an Assessment Plate. “There is of improvement to come. She will be staying. She is a lovely filly.” Stephen Lerena saddles Samarra who runs in the fifth. Gavin says that her form does not truly reflect her ability and that Samarra has a decent chance of finding the money. Parisienne Chic runs in the ninth. Gavin says that the St John Gray mare would have preferred the longer run-in offered at the Vaal. He suggests that even though she is lumping 60kgs, she is worth including and that she was all heart and tried her hardest every time she came racing. The dark horse Mutrib runs in the tenth. Gavin says that on the feel given him during work, the Mike de Kock 4yo did not give the impression of a onetime winner and one-time placer, and that he could prove some value for quartet inclusion.

Highlands Stud part of Ridgemont’s outstanding stallion Dynasty had a field day at Durbanville last Wednesday. The former South African Horse Of The Year was responsible for two very impressive 3yo winners, but his triple Gr1 winning son Jackson also produced an eye catching debut winner in the form of Heaven’s Embrace. Now the sire of ten first crop winners, Jackson also produced the good looking Dynamite Jack to win at Durbanville on Saturday.

Is It Time?

The NHA has warned licenced officials that irrespective of recent changes in local cannabis legislation, NHA Rules still apply. Prohibited substances in horses are covered by Rule 73.4.2, while banned substances in riders are covered by Rule 77.2.2. The NHA cautioned that preparations produced from any Cannabis plant species contain tetrahydrocannabinoids (THC), which could result in a positive finding in horses and riders.

Nadeson Park’s Redoute’s Choice stallion Time Thief will be represented in Saturday’s A$13 million The Everest by Gr1 winner In Her Time. She is the most fancied of the Kris Lees trio, which includes Graff and Le Romain. The three have drawn wide in barriers 8, 10 and 11 respectively.

VISION

Lammerskraal Stud’s Visionaire enjoyed a memorable Saturday when he was represented by winners in three different countries. The Visionaire treble included a very smart performance by his Summerhill bred 3yo son Bestday Of Mylife, who stormed home to shed his maiden over 1250m at Durbanville on Saturday. Visionaire’s other winners over the weekend included Hillah The Hun and Crazy Vision, who scored at Borrowdale Park and Champ de Mars respectively.

ENOUGH

There will be no seasonal swansong for Sea Of Class at the Breeders' Cup next month as connections of Sunday's gallant Arc runner-up have decided to call it a year. Unlike her conqueror Enable, runner-up Sea Of Class has been on the go since making her debut at the Craven meeting in April and it has been decided she has done enough for the year, with the plan to keep her in training in 2019.

Fat Old Men "I've lost a lot of weight but I always say you never see fat old men – you can't carry the weight around forever.” The words of Iconic UK racing figure, the 78 year old John McCririck, who has played down fears over his health after concern was expressed on social media about his gaunt appearance. McCririck – known as Big Mac during a lengthy period as a pundit on Channel 4 Racing – said the weight loss had been deliberate but was accelerated by a spell of ill health last year.

Peak Performance Arc - Eina! The new Longchamp attracted some mixed reviews after Sunday’s Arc meeting. The grandstand, which cost a whopping €145 million, received mixed reaction in its mustard coat. There were tales of going grey while queueing for a beer or glass of wine, needing another shave by the time a toilet was found and, if you wanted to have a bet on one of the six Gr1’s on the world-class card, you had no chance of getting on if you hadn’t started queuing early in the week. And the entrance tickets cost an arm and leg.

Redzel will jump from the inside gate as he looks to defend his title in Saturday's A$13 million The Everest. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained gelding jumped from barrier 4 when winning in 2017. He is one of four horses sharing favouritism with TAB.com.au following the draw. Shoals (2), Trapeze Artist (6) and Vega Magic (7) are the other runners on the top line of betting.

SUPERMAN

They don’t call him Superman for nothing. Ridgemont Racing jockey Anton Marcus was at his brilliant best in getting the unbeaten One World home at Durbanville on Saturday. Pick 6 tickets were in the bin at the 250m marker. The champagne corks were popping a few seconds later. One of the rides of the season – even on a top horse.

Mauritian-born Karis Teetan topped the win count at Sha Tin Racecourse on Sunday with a fine five-timer that included Pakistan Friend’s short-priced score in the Chinese Recreation Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1600m) – and also a victory snagged in the stewards’ room.

he Cup success was achieved with new ally Tony Cruz but two of the Mauritian’s tally – including the stewards’ intervention – came in tandem with long-time supporter Tony Millard, who continued his fine start to the campaign with a treble. “These days don’t always happen but I had a good book of rides today,” Teetan said after the Frankie Lor-trained Morethanlucky sealed the quintet in the

afternoon’s final race, the Class 2 Yew Handicap (1400m). Teetan ended the day with 11 wins for the term, three behind champion jockey Zac Purton, but played down talk of a title challenge. “It’s still very early in the season; Zac is pretty good and it’s difficult to go past him,” he said. “I don’t want to say too much and get a big head but Joao (Moreira) is not here now so there are a few opportunities out there. I’m not going to think that big at this stage.”

Fourth Cox On Agenda For Winx

There were plenty of nervous moments but superstar Winx’s backers need not have worried as the wonder mare claimed her 28thconsecutive win – and a 21st career Group 1 success – in the AS$500,000 TAB Turnbull Stakes run over 2000m at Flemington on Saturday. Racing.com reports that the daughter of Street Cry lived up to her tag as the world’s best racehorse with brilliant final 400m, thundering home from near-last on the home turn to nab stablemate Youngstar and Kings Will Dream in the final 50m. An emotional Chris Waller heaped

praise on jockey Hugh Bowman, who remained calm during the run despite being forced to settle on the inside of other horses. The seven-year-old will now chase an unprecedented fourthconsecutive Cox Plate at The Valley on 27 October.

Winter In Dubai

L

Dean Kannemeyer’s sensational 2018 Sun Met runner-up Last Winter arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday and has joined Mike de Kock’s Blue Stables in advance of his 2019 Dubai World Cup campaign.

ast Winter, who will be based with Mike de Kock under the banner of Dean Kannemeyer Racing, has only run six times, winning his first four starts with ease, before being pipped in the Gr2 Premier Trophy by the dour frontrunning local, Milton. At his sixth and final start in South Africa, he flew up late from many lengths back under Piere Strydom to be beaten a half length by subsequent SA Horse Of The Year Oh Susanna in the Gr1 Sun Met. Last Winter was lumped with

a 119 rating after that effort and, in view of the limited local programme and being a 2000m horse at best, it was felt that an overseas campaign – Dubai and Hong Kong were mentioned – was a better option to realise his enormous potential. He is raced by Khaya Stables. Last Winter went into quarantine a few weeks after the Met and then travelled to Post Lafayette in the North East of Mauritius for a quarantine period. The 5yo son of Western Winter out of the Cape Fillies Guineas winner Field Flower (Silvano), has been based at Mary Slack’s Abington Place Stables in the UK since May.

An Arc For The Ages

Callan’s Confidence Booster South African jockey Callan Murray was rewarded for his patience as he took the opener at Sha Tin on Sunday and snared a first win for the campaign. The young man’s relief was expressed with a loud whoop as he passed the winning post aboard Top Ace, his 24th mount this season and the first leg of the Millard treble. “It’s just a relief. Every winner is nice but my last winner was actually in June, since before my hip surgery, so it’s been frustrating and this will give me the confidence I needed,” Murray said. This success on the Millardtrained galloper was the rider’s first in Hong Kong since he returned to his homeland in July 2017 following a late-season four-win stint. Murray, 20, landed back in Hong Kong in August with a view to securing a long-term contract in Hong Kong. But his early season hopes took a knock when he picked up a two-meeting suspension in September. “The suspension was the most frustrating but these things happen, I was patient enough and I think it’s made me a better person,” he said.

“This is an exciting time for the team and for Lady Christine Laidlaw’s Khaya Stables. Performance on the world stage is the ultimate for any owner and trainer, and while we are relying heavily on the support, advice and technical expertise of those who have gone before us, we are looking forward to taking this fine athlete to greater heights and carrying the flag with pride,” said Dean Kannemeyer. The 2019 Dubai World Cup Carnival prize money will be boosted 12%, totalling US $12,670,000, and the exciting series will take place on Thursdays from January 3 through February 28 for its first nine meetings. Its 10th and final meeting will be Super Saturday 9 March. The Gr1 Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline, gets a $2 million boost to $12 million and boasts a $7.2 million purse to the winner; the highest first-place prize in global thoroughbred racing. in terms of the number of big race performers to have come from the sale. Buyers are in for a treat with progeny of proven international sires including Camelot, Equal Stripes, Manhattan Rain, Pour Moi and Rock of Gibraltar all on offer, alongside 2-year olds from leading SA stallions Dynasty, Silvano, Trippi and Var. There will also be an opportunity to purchase thoroughbreds ready for the track from proven up-and-coming sires Duke of Marmalade, Gimmethegreenlight, Oratorio, Pomodoro, Querari, Twice Over and What a Winter. Back home at Longchamp and in front of a new €145 million glitzy grandstand, the pressure was on the world's most prestigious Flat race to produce something special. What we got was something so special that replays will be shown over and over again and no-one will ever get sick of seeing it.

It was an Arc for the ages. Enable defended her crown in the most intoxicating of circumstances but 2018 was light years away from 2017 in every possible way. Last year's stunning success, achieved with the ease of a filly vastly superior to her peers, arrived at the end of a gruelling seven-race campaign which saw her mop up three Oaks and a King George along the way. This Arc was ground out on the back of an all-weather spin around Kempton only 29 days earlier. No previous Arc winner had got the job done on the back of just one run in the that calendar year, but this is no ordinary filly. This is a filly whose ability is outweighed only by her attitude. "It's been a nightmare year, I'm feeling a deep sense of relief – the elation will come later," admitted a visibly relieved trainer John Gosden, later to be hailed a genius by Frankie Dettori. And rightly so. "It's absolutely massive for the filly," he continued. "It's not easy when they go lame and they're off for a long time. She has such a fantastic mind. It's like a manager with a top player who always gives you 100 per cent. You can build your team around her. "You're not meant to come into the Arc after one run on the allweather. I had a slight hiccup between Kempton and here, which wasn't ideal either. She had a temperature and missed a piece of work, and the way the race was run tested her fitness. The last 100 metres were an eternity for me, the jockey and the horse."

Gold Circle

Karis’ High Five

Frankie Dettori Those thrilling final 100 metres might have felt like an eternity for Gosden but they flew by in the blink of an eye for William Haggas and James Doyle as the line came a stride, or two at most, too early for Sea Of Class. The daughter of Sea The Stars, who this year followed a similar path to Enable in 2017 by winning the Irish and Yorkshire Oaks, trailed the 19-runner pack on the home turn but arrived with her customary late burst, which ended an agonising short neck away from a share of victory. How fitting to see two topclass fillies fight out the finish to a race which has been dominated by females in recent years. The colts have not been able to cope of late, with only Golden Horn managing to get the boys on the roll of honour in the last eight years. Fillies have won eight out of the last 11 Arcs, going back to Zarkava. One boy who can't keep away from the roll of honour is Dettori. This was his sixth Arc success, two more than any other rider has managed, and you sense it was his most fulfilling of all. - Racing Post

Ray On The Way The Joey Ramsden-trained Gr1 winning sprinter Red Ray will relocate from Klawervlei Stud to stand at the Birch Bros’ Vogel Vlei Stud this season. A son of triple champion South African sire Western Winter, Red Ray’s first foals are arriving now. A R700 000 purchase from the 2012 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, Red Ray won or placed in 13 of 15 South African races and banked nearly R2 000 000 in earnings. He won his first three races on the bounce and rounded off his two-year-old campaign by finishing second in the Gr1 SA Nursery to Dubawi colt Willow Magic. The Lammerskraal Stud bred Red Ray impressed even more at three when thrashing July winner and Horse Of The Year Legislate by two and a half lengths in the Gr3 Cape Classic, before placing in all of the

G1 Cape Guineas (third), Gr1 Cape Flying Championship (second) and Golden Horse Sprint (second). A son of triple champion sire Western Winter, Red Ray claimed a well overdue Gr1 victory when romping to a clear cut two length win the 2016 Mercury Sprint, leaving Gr1 winners Real Princess, Gulf Storm, Talktothestars and Fly By Night in his wake. Red Ray is one of six stakes winners produced by the four time winning mare Nacarat. The latter is also dam of Red Ray’s graded stakes winning full-siblings Nania (Gr1 Thekwini Stakes), Bishop’s Bounty (Gr2 Diadem Stakes) and Brutal Force (Gr2 The Merchants).

Winners of various Breeders Cup races have proved hugely successful at stud. From the likes of breed-shaping stallions, Sunday Silence, A P Indy, Unbridled, Last Tycoon, and Theatrical, to such remarkable producers as Miesque, Personal Ensign, Banks Hill, Sacahuista and Dance Smartly, the modern day thoroughbred owes plenty to past Breeders’ Cup winners as sires and matriarchs.

T

he Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is set to be run over 1700m at Churchill Downs on 2 November. Winners of this race have also fared well at stud. Inaugural winner, Chief’s Crown, siring, among others, Epsom Derby winner, Erhaab, and high class miler/sire, Grand Lodge. Capote sired a string of high class gallopers (including South African Horse Of The Year, Surfing Home), headed by Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hero, Boston Harbor, and Success Express, who enjoyed success at stud in Australia. Not only did Success Express feature as sire of GR1 winners, but he is damsire of champion sire, Savabeel, and his GR1 winning son, Al Akbar, is broodmare sire of Winx.

Scat Daddy The 2001 Juvenile hero, Johannesburg, ensured his name will live on for years to come through his outstanding sire son, Scat Daddy, while Gilded Time, Macho Uno and Street Sense have all enjoyed multiple Gr1 successes as sires. To date, the most successful Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner has been Unbridled’s Song, whose 100 plus stakes winners include no fewer than six individual Breeders’ Cup winners, headed by champion, Arrogate. An increasingly successful broodmare sire, Unbridled’s Song was Champion Sire in North America in 2017. Tellingly, perhaps, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile honour roll also features a stallion capable of going on to great things and who could yet become the best stallion to have emerged from this major 2yo feature. Uncle Mo, the four and a quarter

length winner of the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, is enjoying a fantastic year in 2018. The son of Indian Charlie has made his mark both on the track and in the sales ring, and with a number of major races still to be run in North America in 2018, Uncle Mo could well be poised for even greater things yet.

Our Uncle A sign of Uncle Mo’s increasing success can be viewed by the fact that just three stallions in North America this year have been represented by more black type winners than his eyecatching tally of fifteen. Uncle Mo’s 15 stakes winners this year places him equal to both Quality Road and Kitten’s Joy, with the latter currently North America’s Leading Sire by Stakes. Uncle Mo has also been responsible for more black type winners in the USA (his stakes winners have won a total of 17 features thus far) than high profile stallions as Speightstown (Gone West), Curlin (Smart Strike), Distorted Humor (Forty Niner) and Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado). The Ashford Stud based stallion, whose $125 000 fee in 2018 was higher than proven Gr1 sires as Candy Ride, Bernardini, Distorted Humor and Lemon Drop Kid, made a blistering start when his first Northern Hemisphere crop of foals produced 25 stakes winners. Typically well supported for an Ashford sire in his first season, Uncle Mo’s first crop did include 160 foals, which gave him a strike rate of 15.6% stakes winners to foals from his first crop, an impressive statistic. He is the first Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner to sire a Kentucky

Royal Mo Derby winner, with the Uncle Mo sired Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winning champion, Nyquist (one of three Kentucky Derby runners that season for his sire) landing the Kentucky Derby in 2016. Uncle Mo dominated the US First Crop Sires List of 2015 with his 28 winners banking $3 675 294 (runner up, Twirling Candy, had runners that earned $1 167 144 in contrast), and went on to head the US Leading Second Crop Sires List of 2016 when his runners earned over $12 million (Twirling Candy, again runner up, had runners earn just over $3.56 million that season, a good indication of Uncle Mo’s domination.

Consistent Uncle Mo has shown that he is no one season wonder, with his 15 black type winners including seven graded stakes winners - including unbeaten star filly, Dream Tree. His stakes winners this season have also included high class 2yo’s, Forty Under, Galilean and Monkeys Uncle. At the time of writing, Uncle Mo is 13th on the North America General Sires List and 11th on the North American Leading Sires of 2YOs list. Uncle Mo’s ongoing success also places the spotlight on his underrated, but top class, sire, Indian Charlie. A great grandson of outstanding stallion, Caro, Indian Charlie died relatively early but left behind 83 stakes winners (9%)

with his stars including champions Fleet Indian, Uncle Mo, and Indian Blessing and the G1 winners A.P. Indian, By The Moon, Pampered Princess and Liaison. The Indian Charlie sired shortlived champion, Fleet Indian, is second dam of the 2018 dual Gr1 winning 2yo, Game Winner (Candy Ride), who rates a leading chance in the 2018 Sentient Jet Juvenile at Churchill Downs. Uncle Mo, the sire of Gr1 winners on both dirt and turf, has a single son at stud in South Africa in the form of Gr3 Robert B.Lewis Stakes victor, Royal Mo. The latter has made an encouraging start this season and already has a number of mares tested in foal.

Farewell Encosta De Lago

A

Coolmore Stud announced the death of champion sire Encosta De Lago on Saturday.

multiple champion sire and the reigning champion broodmare sire, Encosta De Lago is one of the greatest Australian-bred sires. He produced 26 Gr1 winners worldwide headed by six-time elite winner Chautauqua, the one-time highest rated sprinter in the world. Among Encosta De Lago’s other Gr1 winners are Racing To Win, Alinghi and English. The 25-year-old was retired from stud duties two years ago and spent his final days at Coolmore Stud in the NSW Hunter Valley. “Encosta’ will be greatly missed by all who dealt with him at Coolmore over the last 14 years,” Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier told Just Horse Racing.com.

“He was a horse with a beautiful nature and we were incredibly lucky to have him. “His legacy will live on through his sire line descendants like Zoustar and Rubick, as well as through his daughters, who have already made him champion broodmare sire. He enjoyed plenty of success with his South African based runners and from 32 runners in this country, Encosta De Lago has been represented by 25 winners – a total which includes 8 stakes performers. Encosta De Lago’s best local representatives included champion 2yo Delago Deluxe and Derby winner Dan De Lago – with both colts having subsequently been retired to stud, in Australia and South Africa respectively. Their paternal half brother, Safwan,

was another decent local performer in this country, with the gelding’s best performances including a memorable dead heat in the Gr2 Betting World 1900 of 2011. Another classy performer, brilliant 2yo and Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Merlene De Lago, also returned to Australia for stud duties.
