Marchingontogether is a promising 3yo

MICHAELMAS HANDICAP (L) at Greyville this Sunday

Rub Of The Green

T

The Greyville polytrack may have saved many a meeting over the four years since it was inaugurated. But there is nothing quite like watching a turf meeting at the historic Durban track and we enjoy that pleasure for the second consecutive weekend with the running of Sunday’s R150 000 Listed Michaelmas Handicap.

he Michaelmas takes centre stage on an eightrace card and is back on the green surface after a three year sabbatical on the all weather. The 1900m feature has attracted a mixed bag field of nine runners, with the Eastern Cape Derby winner American Landing heading the SP ratings at his second run as a 4yo. The beautifully bred Dynasty colt didn’t make quite the impact anticipated during the SA Champions Season. He started favourite in the mixed Track & Ball Derby but was beaten by Equus Champion It’s My Turn and on his seasonal debut last month found the mile sharp when staying on behind the classy Matador Man. He looks nicely in off the 52kg mark here over the extra 300m. The Darley Arabian winner Roy Had Enough carries top weight and looked to be in need of his last run when failing to kick and finishing just over 4 lengths behind Matador Man. The Australian-bred gets the services of Anton Marcus and showed his mettle as a 3yo of some standing with good performances in some of the classics. He should be

ready for a big effort here. The ever game 6yo Celtic Captain won this race on the polytrack in 2016 when stilled trained by Gareth van Zyl. A strong front-runner, his last run is best ignored as he needed it and did not settle. He holds Roy Had Enough on his penultimate effort – but it could be a very different ball game on the turf. The lightly tried Pathfork colt Marchingontogether is the only 3yo in the field. This progressive sort tries the 1900m for the first time but his Montjeu dam has proven a source of stamina - and his racing style augurs well for a big effort off a decent pace. Lezeanne Forbes’ Warfarer is a decent hardknocking 5yo who steps up in class and could challenge for the places in the hands of the wily veteran, Mark Khan. Dean Kannemeyer won the race last year with Mr O’Neil and he saddles the first of a trio of staying sorts in One Man Show. The son of Tiger Ridge is a dogged dour stayer who has his first run when not disgraced and only 6 lengths behind stablemate It’s My Turn in the Gold Cup. Run Rhino Run is the unofficial king of the winning margin after

his 22 length win at this track over 3000m a year ago. A likely pacesetter, it is difficult to fancy his chances in this line-up. The versatile 7yo New Fort was reported lame after his last start and has not won in a while. The son of Fort Wood would probably prefer further to show his top ability. Sabina’s Dynasty is a gutsy mare and she showed nice enthusiasm when staying on behind Dawn Assault at her season opener on 27 September. She was outgunned in the July Consolation and the Gold Bracelet but looks set to improve again from the 1 draw. It’s a fascinating handicap where a pace looks reasonably likely with several candidates looking set to take them along. American Landing is highly regarded and was staying on well over shorter last time. Roy Had Enough is talented and could beat the weight to challenge. Marchingontogether is thrown in the deep end by Gavin van Zyl – how good is the 3yo? We will find out more on Sunday.

A Walk In The Park – Sometimes! It is not often that we have a well-performed sister taking on her progressive younger full-brother in a feature field of just nine runners. But that’s the family boat race that we are presented with in Sunday’s Listed Michaelmas Handicap where the 5yo Gr2 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes winner Sabina’s Dynasty takes on her 4yo fullbrother American Landing. Both were bred by well known Attorney Mike De Broglio and both were acquired for different interests off the De Broglio dispersal on the 2017 BSA August Kenilworth Sale. The then unraced American Landing, who subsequently won the East Cape Derby, was the highest priced lot at that sale when acquired for the Sherrell family for R1,6 million. In the same ring, Sabina’s Dynasty was astutely purchased as a maiden for R170 000. She now races for Messrs Mandelstam, Rabinowitz, Peter and Advocate Manny Witz. They are by multiple champion Dynasty (Fort Wood) out of the versatile five-time winner Sabina Park (Sportsworld), who won the SA Oaks in 2004. The latter was bought for R55 000 by Mike De Broglio off Varsfontein’s 2002 National Yearling Sales draft. The filly out of Batimamselle, was De Broglio’s first horse and she famously also produced dual Summer Cup winner, Master Sabina. Mike De Broglio recalled the purchase of the ‘unluckiest horse ever’ that so changed his life: “I had started playing golf and had become friendly with Alec Hogg. I approached him and said I wanted to buy a horse and what was the best way to go about it. He said ‘go to David Ferraris, he is the best trainer in my opinion.’ I bid on quite a few that I got knocked out on and it got to a point in the day where I was thinking ‘this is silly and I’m going to end up losing’, but I carried on, probably just because my mom and Alec were there. Ormond was sitting behind his son when Sabina Park was led in and he said – “Here’s one to go for. Sportsworlds are early types, they run early which is good for a first time owner.” And that was it. I bid on her, did my job and off I went. From costing R55 000, she won R600 000 in about a three week spell, winning her first three races. It was so exciting.”

ith track management under fire and unanswered questions over the condition of the Vaal surface, the 1475m race was split into two heats – and abandoned again last Saturday – this time at Turffontein. Based on three sliding scale tiers of weight, the two races give everybody a chance to hit the big time in terms of a generous cheque and some feature race exposure. Base weights were determined by the handicapper prior to consideration of additional weights for Graded and Listed races. Weights were structured as follows: Tier 1 - 57kg & above / Tier 2 - 53kg to 56,5kg / Tier 3 - 50kg to 52,5kg Additional penalties for the highest Graded/ Listed win in the last 18 months are: Grade 1: 3kg, Grade 2: 2kg, Grade 3: 1kg and a Listed success a half kilo. Ashley Fortune saddles the smart former Candice Bass-Robinson trained Rings And Things. The daughter of Querari looks to have a massive shout on our SP Ratings and her two runs up North have been first class. She was liberally used last time when caught late by former Cape-based stakes performer Rose In Boom and will strip fit and ready. Mike de Kock’s Hakeem, a son of Redoute’s Choice ran a fair third to Prince Of Kahal after five month rest following a fall at Turffontein. A once promising 3yo, it would be folly to disregard his prospects.

The same applies to the Gokhan Terzitrained Daffiq who has had two troubled outings at his last two jumps. He was not persevered with when beaten 6 lengths by Tsitsikamma Dance and then was lame on the near -fore after a fair effort behind Pietro Mascagni last time. Count Tassilo has not won in ages and pulled up lame when beaten 24 lengths in this race last year by Forest Fox. The 6yo is never far off but will need to find a finish to challenge. Dan The Lad won the Consolation feature on Grand Heritage day last year and is a decent hardknocking 5yo who is capable of a decent effort off his efficient weight mark – but has an awful draw to beat.

Everybody is in the same boat for a race originally carded for 29 September. Some horses will be more affected than others by the disruption – but one still has to fancy Mardi Gras.

he son of Oratorio, who makes his eighth career start, has run two fast-finishing seconds at his two starts this term – the last seeing his jockey and trainer questioned for the tactics employed when chasing Mr Flood home in an Assessment Plate at the Vaal on 4 October. Ashley Fortune’s Tsitsikamma Dance has pulled a 4 draw and gets the blinkers fitted after winning his first start for the new yard at the end of August. While the Grand Heritage was delayed a fortnight, he now runs off a six week lapse and the connections will be hoping that he has held his game. Mike de Kock topweight Mujallad stayed on well behind the very progressive Chimichuri Run last time out and must have a chance of

Third Time Lucky? The WSB Grand Heritage, originally scheduled to be run at the Vaal on Saturday 29 September, was replaced by the two WSB Grand Series features at Turffontein on 13 October. This effectively split the original 28 strong field in two with both 1475m races scheduled to be run on the inside track and offering stakes of R500 000 each. Last Saturday’s meeting was, however, abandoned after the fourth race after one of the heaviest downpours witnessed in years. So the features have been rescheduled for this Saturday and we try again. Will it be third time lucky? A long range weather forecast as we go to print ominously suggests that Saturday will see more thunderstorms over Turffontein.

challenging if reproducing that kind of run – but he has drawn wide. Zouaves is the only Geoff Woodruff runner in the field and the 5yo has maintained a distinquished line of form over an extended period of time. He ran Equus Champion Will Pays to a neck at his penultimate start in receipt of 4kgs and can up his game further to challenge. London Secret is one of the Sean Tarry trio and, while carrying a handy galloping weight of 52kgs, she looks to need to improve on her recent form to have a shout. Lucky Houdalakis’ Huyssteen has performed well at the Vaal and enjoys a nominal 1,5kg swing at the weights with Full Of Attitude for a six length beating last time. The big race combination of Muzi Yeni and Joey Soma team up with Greys Inn gelding Full Of Attitude, a consistent 4yo who could chase quartet honours. A winner of 3 of his 14 starts, he would have an undeniable money chance on best form from the 1 draw. The 2016 Grand Heritage winner Irish Pride is now a 6yo and has not won for some time. The son of Ideal World is known to be a touch in-and-out though and could surprise if in the mood.

Programme Shuffled After Turffontein Thunderstorm Clyde Basel, Racing Executive of Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Ltd, has lauded the PE trainers for their quick response to the unscheduled race meeting which took place on Tuesday at Fairview.

“I AM so impressed. The response from the trainers in Port Elizabeth was absolutely phenomenal. In less than 24 hours after the abandonment of Turffontein on Saturday they enabled us to finalise the declarations for an unscheduled meeting,” Basel said. “With their response, they have shown that the racing industry can indeed stand together in a time of need. The PE trainers have come to the party when we needed them most and for that, we have to say thank you. The National Racing Bureau got their team together in a matter of hours to pull this together.” Last Saturday’s abandoned features will now be run as carded and as part of the rescheduled meeting on the Turffontein Inside Track on Saturday. The original WSB Grand Heritage,

he now Summerveld based conditioner has always been keen to find another Cape Summer Season Gr1 winner and after Sunday’s Greyville feature, the R130 000 KZN Guineas Trial, there are some serious travel plans afoot! The quietly spoken Yogas stepped into Brett Crawford’s shoes in 2009 when his former boss went on his own, and he held the reins at the Plattner Racing Headquarters at Rondeberg on the Cape West Coast until February 2015. It hasn’t been a walk in the park over the past three and a half years trying to establish himself in a narrow and competitive market, but with his solid grounding, family support and natural will to succeed, Yogas has boxed on relentlessly. “It’s very exciting to have a really smart horse again and Arianos Shadow is probably the top 3yo filly in KZN. That’s a great honour for me and I believe she has earned the chance and is good enough to take her place in the Cape Fillies Guineas. Mr Logan (her owner) and I are keen to take our chances and as you know Cape Town is my adoptive home town! I think she will relish the long run-in of the Kenilworth summer course as she doesn’t enjoy being bustled and she is getting stronger – this was her first run at a mile and she will be best around 1400m to 1600m I feel.” Yogas said that with the Guineas two months away, he would not be looking at doing too much with the daughter of Querari. “You can see that she is lightly raced as she has a few issues. So I am unlikely to race her in the Cape before the feature. In a seven horse field that included a duo of promising Sean Tarry-trained two-time winners, Muzi Yeni had Arianos Shadow three lengths off pacesetter Miss Calypso and Generous Lady. Produced at the 300m, Arianos Shadow powered home to register smart 1,75 length

win in a time of 99.62 secs. Generous Lady was always thereabouts and stayed on for third ahead of the Sean Tarry pair of Sweet Mary Lou and Second Request – the latter being left with far too much ground to make up by apprentice Luke Ferraris. As her trainer suggests, Arianos Shadow looks a very decent 3yo in the making. She was runner-up behind Equus nominee Temple Grafin in the Gr2 The Debutante and has won 3 of her 5 starts for stakes of R300 300. The Narrow Creek Stud bred daughter of Querari (Oasis Dream) is the third foal of the unraced Count Dubois mare, Counting Gold. Both of her previous offspring in Harrison (Sarge) and Momo (Ideal World) won.

Sweet Stuff! Some good news for KZN Breeders is that Notation (Fastnet Rock), a filly out of the Gr1 winning Kahal mare Chocolicious (SAF), was a 3.25 length winner for Fastnet Rock and Lindsay Park at Cranbourne on Sunday. Notation is part-owned by Coolmore and was a $240,000 weanling buy in 2016. Now unbeaten in two starts, Notation is the second foal from Chocolicious, who won the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship at Scottsville as a 2-year-old.

scheduled for the Vaal on 29 September 2018, was split into two races and renamed the Grand Series 1 and 2, and re- rostered for last Saturday alongside the Grand Heritage Consolation. The three carded features fell victim to a thunderstorm that hit Turffontein and led to the abandonment of Saturday’s meeting after the running of the fourth race. In a quick reshuffle of the programme, this past Tuesday’s Turffontein meeting was moved to Thursday 18 October at the same venue, where it replaced the Workriders meeting scheduled for that day. The Fairview meeting was slotted in there. The Workriders meeting will now be run on Tuesday 23 October, alongside a twilight meeting at Durbanville.

A suspected, but as yet unconfirmed, African Horse Sickness fatality in close proximity to Fairview Racecourse reported last Thursday morning has placed a cloud over visitor plans for feature races next week in the Eastern Cape.

lockdown on all movement was implemented immediately. This case could have serious consequences for Cape trainers who have come out in numbers with entries for the R350 000 Listed Algoa Cup over 2000m to be run on Sunday 28 October and the Listed Racing Association Plate for three-year-olds over 1600m to be run on Friday 26 October at Fairview Racecourse. The Sporting Post has been in contact with the State Vet as well as Adrian Todd, Head of the Horse Import/Export Task Team (HIETT) and further information was awaited as we went to print on Tuesday. If confirmed, visitors could travel into Fairview but would then have to remain in the area for 40 days. The two Fairview features are scheduled for

declaration on Monday 22 October. Tabnews reports that Justin Snaith has been a regular supporter of racing in the Eastern Cape, so it comes as no surprise to see his runners among the entries, but Candice BassRobinson, Glen Kotzen, Vaughan Marshall and Dan Katz also have nominations for the two races. Sean Tarry, whose runners finished first and second in 2015 when Stonehenge touched off Orchestrated, has entered lightly raced Helios who has a record of one win and two places from three starts. Snaith has entered Doublemint who is likely to go off favourite if he runs. He has two Grade 3 wins to his credit – the Politician Stakes and the Winter Derby, both at Kenilworth – and placed behind unbeaten Rainbow Bridge in both the Winter Guineas and Winter Classic.

Kenilworth Hosts Cape Features

NEXT Saturday sees the running of the first graded races of the Cape Summer Season at Kenilworth as the R400 000 Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship and the R250 000 Gr3 Cape Classic take pride of place. It is good to see Highveld-based trainers Mike de Kock and Sean Tarry considering taking on the local hopes. Gold Circle report that De Kock has nominated Premier’s Champion and Joburg Spring Challenge runner-up Alyaasaat for the Cape Classic and Ghaalla (a close-up third in the Jo’bug Fillies Spring Challenge) for

the Western Cape Fillies Championship – formerly the Choice Carriers and before that the Odessa. De Kock, successful with Ektifaa two years ago and with Phillipa Johnson in 2003, has also entered Nafaayes who has won two out of three. Sweet Mary Lou, Anneka and Sally Called are the three Tarry entries for the 1 400m Grade 2 and the three-time champion trainer has also entered two for the Cape Classic including top-rated Chimichuri Run, who was third in both the SA Nursery and the Gold Medallion.

Exotic Bets Hold The Key Raymond Hyde

W

My concerns for racing are well known and shared by many and it is tragic that operators locally and worldwide seem content with the sport sliding into obscurity, writes Leon Smuts.

hen will those responsible for racing realise that it can be a gold mine by being a source of great pleasure to multitudes not yet acquainted with racing. The many reasons for racing’s demise and the difficulty in marketing it to new participants are well documented and need not be highlighted again. Would it not be better to rather work on a few compelling reasons to get involved and offering these to a market constantly seeking new entertainment and affordable past times, than to only offer excuses as to why it is not happening? It is very evident that the few trying to promote racing are up against it with very little support from those that stand to benefit or the media and appears to be flogging a dead horse most of the time. The lack of creativity and general care displayed by

operators is sickening and suggests that the wrong people are in charge of growing the sport to the detriment of everyone earning a living from it. Many years of involvement in both marketing and racing suggests that alternative product development could offer tremendous benefits in delivering new and more viable markets for the sport. It is not a case of current products being bad or not comprehensive enough but they are simply not effective in the role of supporting new interest in racing. To experienced or skilled players they offer useful variety and purpose but for racing to prosper again the sport has to appeal to an entirely new group of players. Exotics hold the key to new interest but pools and rules must be player friendly and supportive of promoting participation. Right now this is not

The Gym That Lyndon Built…

T

the case with game rules, take out percentages, the ability to win and the cost of a competitive permutation making new involvement anything but attractive and of little support to any sales team trying to promote racing. This could be easily remedied with more creative formats designed to make racing fun and affordable and created to promote longer term and more regular involvement. The objective should be to generate mass appeal and an enjoyable platform for skills creation, the cog around which involvement and long term value extraction actually turns. Without skill and enjoyment, constant losses will put paid to any chance of securing longer term interest in racing. The old belief that being knocked out of a game will produce further involvement in other race products relies heavily on addiction and unrealistic optimism and should never be a supported argument if new markets are being sought. Give both new players and existing supporters, formats that will underscore the enjoyment that racing has to offer and that will make involvement a long term exercise rather than a chore for which the novelty and reason for participation soon wears off.

Dear NHA Board Members O M G! What a reply! Now we know who Hazel is to the last detail. But all my other questions? Swept under the carpet? Audit? I STILL have some questions and seeing as you never addressed my previous queries, here we go again. Do we really need a qualified accountant to run the Stud Book from an Executive Office Upstairs? What is the salary to employ this accountant in a position that certainly does not require a B Comm? Are we satisfied with an accountant with NO hands on experience to run our stud book, one who ticked the boxes with a most discredited previous CEO? I never saw the position advertised - how did Hazel get to be Keeper? As a Breeder who pays part of the approximately R8 million breeders annually put into the NHRA coffers, I’m entitled to ask and to expect a civil reply. You mention as an aside that I should not have ‘gone to the press’. If I had approached you as an ordinary , previously silent

member, what reply would I have had? Be Honest Guys. Your reply is an insult to all your members. Especially those who have the gumption to stand up. Have a good racing Year Gentlemen. Enjoy the privileges of your lofty positions while racing struggles to survive . I can assure you, we Breeders, here on the farm, are an endangered species. But then again, it cannot be as bad as I think. Otherwise more would have taken to their keyboards. PS – When you decide to shut down ‘The Gym that Lyndon Built’ – that’s on the first floor of the old Jockey Club building – same floor where the Stud Book is, please give us all a chance to bid on those fantastic bits of equipment. A memorial service for the late Raymond Rogers will be held on Friday 19 October at Greyville Racecourse at 11h00. GOLD CIRCLE’S longserving Television Producer, Raymond passed away suddenly on Monday 8 October.

The National Board of the National Horseracing Authority has advised that until the process of appointing a permanent Chief Executive has been completed, Mr Arnold Hyde will assume the responsibilities of the position.

FORMER NHA CEO Lyndon Barends resigned last month amid reports of personal financial issues. An advertisement for the post closed last Friday 12 October.

Hollywoodbets & Gold Circle Aid Partnership

Veteran breeder Dr Marianne Thomson has asked questions of the National Horseracing Authority in recent weeks.

he NHA published a responding press release on Monday 1 October 2018. Dr Thomson is not satisfied with the lack of direct answers though and now addresses a note to the Board of the NHA via the Sporting Post Mailbag.

Hollywoodbets and Gold Circle recently came to the aid of Coastal Horse Care Unit (CHCU). Each of these well-known organisations pledged an incredible R75 000 to help extend the equine rehabilitation centre’s staff accommodation.

ituated on a farm in the Cato Ridge area CHCU’s mission is to protect and rescue horses and donkeys from all forms of abuse. They also endeavour to educate people about how to correctly care for these animals. Another of their key functions is to help rehome the equines in their care. CHCU made an appeal to the public to assist them with funding to help renovate their on-site staff accommodation and they were thrilled to receive help from both Gold Circle and South Africa’s largest bookmaker Hollywoodbets. According to the organisation’s chairperson Gill Olmesdahl the

larger facilities will significantly help improve conditions at the farm. “We needed to upgrade our staff quarters due to the nature of our work because we bring in many compromised and sick horses who sometimes need 24-hour attention and care. It’s also common for us to receive after hours emergency calls. Having limited staff on the property can put huge pressure on our workers, and there is a risk that staff could burn out from these long hours and dealing with emergencies. We felt that spreading the load would assist our staff. We also feel that having more people present and visible can assist with keeping the premises more secure as we’ve had security issues in the

past. The Coastal Horse Care Unit has limited funds which impacts staff salaries, but thanks to this donation we will now be able to offer more staff members on-site accommodation as part of their packages. This will help make it more affordable for them to keep doing the wonderful work they do!” she said. James Everett, speaking on behalf of Hollywoodbets, said that they were proud to be able to assist CHCU in this way. “Horseracing forms a key part of Hollywoodbets’ business and we are passionate about investing in this industry that is so close to our hearts. When we heard of theCoastal Horse Care Unit’s plight we jumped at the chance to assist them and to help support the great work they are doing for our equine friends. It is also great to partner with Gold Circle, with whom we have a fantastic relationship, in this really deserving cause,” he said.

Hard Cash On Soft Ground

The rich Qipco Champions Day could be staged on testing ground after a weekend deluge at Ascot.

ive days before the richest meeting in the history of British racing, which is designed to showcase all the best that the sport can offer, the going was reported to be heavy in places following the downpours that washed away Monday's meeting at nearby Windsor.

However clerk of the course Chris Stickels hopes that the forecast for a drier week in the build up to Saturday's £4.35 million card will allow conditions to dry slightly. Asked about how he expected the ground to ride on Saturday, Stickels said: "I'd say the most likely scenario would be soft. Heavy rain will be good news for

leading Qipco Champion Stakes contender Cracksman, a confirmed mudlark who has missed several engagements during a dry summer. However Queen Anne Stakes winner Accidental Agent has been ruled out of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton tweeted: "Having met with a minor setback, we have made the decision not to run Accidental Agent again this year. Although we are sad to miss the QEII @Ascot we can't wait for next year with him."

Battlers & A Billionaire It’s the stuff of movies! A Chinese billionaire who can’t speak a word of English, but easily recognises dollar signs, concreter Abram Savage, bus driver Michael Waddington, council worker Brad Playford, electrician Damien Yates and cancer survivor Peter Piras enjoyed Redzel’s great second win in the Everest on Saturday. Other than the rich man from the East, the owners could be seen as classic Aussie battlers – that’s apart from the fact their super horse has now won A$16 million, three quarters of which has come from his two Everest wins.

Young Guns

Aristotle said that youth is easily deceived because it is quick to hope. But Jono Snaith is a little more street wise than that and as Chairman of the newly formed Board of the Western Province Regional Racing Association he has high hopes of making a difference. His fellow directors are Green Street Bloodstock’s Justin Vermaak, Avontuur’s Philip Taberer and Ridgemont Highland’s Craig Keswetter. We wish them well.

Rap On The Knuckles

Apprentice Nathan Klink seems fortunate to have escaped with a ten day suspension after causing havoc in the Turffontein second race on Saturday. Riding the aptly named Split, he shifted ground and caused interference to at least four runners, including the debutante favourite African Daisy, who ended up in fourth under a length off the winner. While it may not have been deliberate on Klink’s part, the penalty seems light as it was an accident waiting to happen - and backers of the favourite were severely prejudiced.

Firing Magic’s Back

Joao ‘Magic Man’ Moreira looks set to make a sensational return to Hong Kong following his failure to secure a full-time Japan Racing Association licence.Moreira, a three-time champion jockey in Hong Kong, had intended to start a new chapter of his career in Japan. Those plans, however, were scuppered after he failed a test on the history of Japanese racing. He now looks poised to complete a return to Hong Kong after 10-time champion trainer John Size stated his intention to enter an application for the Brazilian to become his new stable jockey.

Turning Up The Heat With just seven weeks to go to the Summer Cup, Dean Kannemeyer stepped out second favourite and Equus Champion Stayer It’s My Turn in a 1000m Barrier Trial at Greyville on Sunday. The son of Dynasty finished 5,75 lengths off accomplished sprinter My Majestic Glory. It’s My Turn is likely to be tried in a mile Pinnacle Stakes in a few weeks. See the Summer Cup antepost betting on www.hollywoodbets.net.

THE NEXT FRANKEL? Too Darn Hot’s sizzling win in Saturday’s Darley Dewhurst Stakes has him labelled UK racing’s newest superstar. The Dubawi son with the big name has had his odds cut to 6-4 (from 7-2) for next year’s 2000 Guineas and is 3-1 for the 2019 Investec Derby.

News is that former SA Horse Of The Year and four-time Gr1 winner Legislate has settled in well at the place of his birth, Cheveley Stud, and has had his first mare tested in foal. The son of Dynasty stands for a live foal fee of R5 000.

SICK FOR THE GAME

An Aussie website has observed - and we have confirmed it to Phumelela Exec Vee Moodley - that the last time a punter admitted to being wrong was in 2005 which is coincidentally the year before Twitter was born. The same site confirms that getting out of your chair – whether at the tote or in your lounge - and repeatedly whipping your leg will actually not result in the horse you've backed finding an extra quarter-of-a-length at the finish.

Trainer David Ferraris hit a landmark in the Class 4 Dianthus Handicap at Happy Valley last Wednesday night. Ultimate Dream stormed home under Karis Teetan to give him his 400th Hong Kong victory. Ferraris, 55, arrived in Hong Kong ahead of the 2002/03 season.

Hollywood sponsored veteran East Cape trainer Gavin Smith saddled a sensational five-timer at Fairview on Friday to find himself in the top six on the SA National log.

hile he is thrilled to achieve the rare five winners feat for the sixth time – he also saddled six winners once - in an illustrious career spanning 23 years, the eight-times East Cape Champion Gavin Smith points out that keen local competition and tough prevailing economic conditions are the sobering anchors that firmly keep one’s feet on the ground. “Friday was a champagne day for the team and our owners. But on Saturday morning we were back at work at 04h30 and the five-timer is a moment of proud history in a photo frame on the wall. Horseracing is a never ending wheel that turns. We all get our chance on it,” added the man who took the reins over from his multiple champion trainer Dad, Andy in 1995. Andy passed away in 2014 at the age of 76 after years of ill health. Just as Gavin has fought many battles with his contemporary Allan Greeff on the local trainers championship log over the past 20 years, Andy Smith and the late Stanley Greeff had many tussles for the championship in their training days. Andy Smith, whose best horses were the likes of Captive Prince, Double Your Money, Dapper Duke and Flirting Prince, was regarded as an old school horseman. He was strong on discipline and believed it took patience to get his horses to their best. The feed and fitness of the horses were principles he focussed on. He was famous

for his ability to get the best out of struggling horses. Gavin, who started riding work at the age of 11, is cast in much the same mould as his famous Dad and has saddled close on 2400 winners. Probably the best horse he has ever trained is present day Ascot stallion Bold Silvano, who famously joined the Mike de Kock team before winning one of South Africa’s most prestigious races, the Vodacom Durban July. While not over the moon by us labelling him ‘a veteran’ at the ‘relatively young age’ of 52, Gavin, who holds a National Diploma in Marketing & Sales, spoke to the Sporting Post about the ever changing climate on the South African horseracing landscape. “Living in this beautiful part of the country in what is not always classed as a major racing centre, one can be forgiven for thinking that the whole world revolves around Fairview! But seriously, I believe you have to travel far and wide to find a better place to race anywhere in Africa.” Gavin was unequivocal in his contention that the Fairview turf track is the best course in the country. “Come on, let’s go and walk it. I will show you how fortunate we are to enjoy a well managed superbly maintained facility and tell me where you can equal this anywhere,” said Gavin as he proudly surveyed the emerald landing strip that has hailed so many Smith family winners over a half century of competition.

“Management and leadership is key in any business. My own yard. The local Phumelela region. Even Pick ‘n Pay or Woolies. We are fortunate to have consultative and hands-on leadership here and it shows in the facilities and the morale in the Eastern Cape.” He was quick to stop at this point and remind us that it was not all wine and roses, though. “In a business so centred around horses and people, every day presents a new challenge. And I believe that the recent Grooms protest action was something that could have been avoided. We as the trainers and industry at large need to stand united and resolve the issues. That should happen around a table and not with weapons brandished across a courtyard. I have a family and understand the costs of living today. Grooms are key personnel in this industry. They work hard and have families of their own. We need to be very fair and even more proactive. Let’s not leave the wound till it festers, as things tend to happen.” We asked Gavin if owners had absorbed the full impact of the recently increased wage bills. “I don’t know what all of my colleagues did but a business still needs to be competitive in terms of pricing. My patrons absorbed a portion of the increase. We cannot keep lumbering owners with spiralling bills!” Gavin, who has a horse population of 97 at his disposal today, pointed out that owners had a varied choice in PE racing today.

“There are some very strong and competitive yards here. Alan Greeff is the biggest. But there is Yvette Bremner, Tara Laing and Sharon Kotzen who have their fair share of the winners. And then the Cape boys love to sneak up the Garden Route and grab some of the honey out of the pot! The outside competition is good for racing and generates interest from punters and supporters across the country. I am fortunate that I have a great base of staunch patrons who understand the game and support me. Without owners, we may as well all close up shop.” As to the solutions to problems and some key aspects going forward, Gavin feels that as a starting point, stakes need attention. “The financial model must stack up for owners. Costs are spiralling. We need to race for more money – otherwise owners will have less incentive to buy horses. Its’s a knock on as the breeders are at the start of the food chain and many of them are under tremendous pressure too. I don’t have all the answers but we need to work smarter and come up with solutions rather than watch the world go by.” As to his own season prospects, Gavin says that he is excited about his youngsters coming through this season.

“They are collectively a quality bunch. My older stalwarts are thereabouts but mostly much of a muchness and I won’t be travelling to the Cape or KZN with them. But we have some nice features coming up over the next few weeks locally, and we hope to be competitive.” Gavin will also be attending the BSA Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale on Sunday 4 November. He says it’s a source of good value and he has enjoyed some decent success there. “One of my Algoa Cup entries Chappaquidick and the regular earning two-time winner Pick Again are two recent buys from that sale that come to mind. You always feel you have a good chance as the quality is there and the prices are not telephone numbers,” he laughs. And the short term? “We are boxing on. Always looking to win races and find that next big horse. All while giving our owners a racing experience that is rewarding. I am positive about the future of this country and the industry at large. These will be the tough old bad old days in a few years from now. We just need to work together and remember that most of us have our lives invested in the heart of the sport.”

Everest Double For Redzel When Chris and Michael Ward secured a Snitzel colt from Marquee Stud at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale they were hoping the horse would turn out a life changer.

A

Redzel

nd what a life changer he has become! Back then he was lot number 565. He would sell to the Ward brothers’ Triple Crown Syndications for A$120,000. A son of Snitzel, he was named Redzel. On Saturday Redzel made history when he scored back to back wins in the world’s richest turf race, the $13 million The Everest (1200m) at Randwick. Speaking of numbers, here’s another big one - A$15,372,000. That’s what he’s earned during his career to date, a career which has seen him ranked among the world’s best sprinters for the past two years. At Randwick last year Redzel won the inaugural running of The

Everest, when it carried a total purse of A$10 million. This year, running in the slot of Mr Zhang’s Yulong Investments, Redzel was able to lead throughout and score a strong win over Trapeze Artist who was chasing an emotional win for his breeders, the Vieira family. The six-year-old gelding led from the start in the second running of the 1,200m sprint to take the $6m winner’s purse again and become Australia’s second-highest-earning racehorse in history. Redzel’s race slot was bought for A$600,000 by Chinese billionaire Yuesheng Zhang who made his fortune through mines, windfarms and hotels. But the horse belongs to a group of 17 Australians with regular jobs

The win came despite a small setback during his preparation when missing a start after becoming cast in a box the night before a lead up run. The Ward brothers and the connections of Redzel feared their Everest defence was over. But under the expert care of co-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden the super sprinter was soon back on track and being set for his grand final. And what a grand final performance it was. With regular rider Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle Redzel made all, showing his versatility and class to plough through the heavy track and score. “To do it once I thought we were very lucky but again it is just unbelievable,” a beaming Peter Snowden said. “I knew we had the horse. I was confident he would make the improvement.” “He judged the pace perfectly to give him the chance to finish off hard and the last furlong was his best,” Snowden added. “This is euphoria at its best,” Kerrin McEvoy exclaimed. “It is such an electric feeling.” “I was really happy there was a bit of rain around and he did the rest. It is a huge buzz to win it again. Unbelievable!” The Ward brothers were joined by Yulong’s Mr Zhang in leading in Redzel after today’s big race and said they would all enjoy the celebrations well into the night. Yulong Investments has quickly established itself as one of the leading thoroughbred operations in Australia and are sellers and buyers of quality bloodstock around the world. Saturday’s victory as part of the Redzel team continued Mr Zhang’s successful progression into Australia.

Karis Teetan recorded a treble at Sha Tin on Saturday to move within one win of current champion Zac Purton.

e opened up with a quick double, as Strathallan and Willie Way took the first two races. Teetan than came back to close the meeting when Invincible Fresh just scraped in by a nose over Grant Van Niekerk’s mount Lady First. The recently arrived Van Niekerk didn’t have the luckiest day, with another second and two thirds, without finding the winners box.

The undoubted star of the day however was 28 year old local rider Vincent Ho, who recorded the first four timer of his career. Purton was victorious on Victory Boys in the Class 2 Tsuen Fu Handicap to move to 17 for the season, but his day didn’t end well when he picked up a two meeting suspension for careless riding on Comfort Life in the tenth and last. - Tabnews

Muscutt Injured Daniel Muscutt, son of Brett Crawford assistant trainer Peter Muscutt, suffered damage to his neck and back in a fall at Chelmsford last Thursday. Daniel sustained the injuries when thrown from Pico Boulevard after about 400m of the 1600m Novice Stakes. The George Peckham-trained two-year-old, who was making his racecourse debut, was fatally injured. “Danny has suffered a neck fracture, has fractures to his back and a cracked rib,” said his agent, Paul Clarke. “They are clean fractures which I think is why no surgery is needed. What is wrong with him will heal, however long it takes. “You have to look at the positives in these situations. He has no head injury.” Muscutt rode in Cape Town with Brett Crawford and Stephen Page in 2012 and also rode at Scottsville in 2018. He is recuperating at home.

Duke Dazzles Millard Ready To Run Gallops Internationally

– From Wednesday! On Fire SA-born trainer Tony Millard, son of the legend Terrance Millard, has lauded his promising batch of up-and-coming horses as the best he has ever had, following the win of Strathallan on Saturday at Sha Tin. Millard, with 10 winners and a 20% win strike, took the lead in the Hong Kong trainers’ championship race with the victory in the three-year-old Chung On Handicap. Strathallan had the advantage of two prior race starts over an opposition that included a number of first timers. With the likes of the lightly raced SA-breds Singapore Sling and Nassa in his stable, Millard said he was very happy with his horses and his early season form.

Those that’ve made the annual pilgrimage will know that the Ready To Run gallops at Summerhill had evolved into a national institution over the first three decades of their existence.

The dictates of a lower market have called for a more modest approach, now in the form of what one might term ‘private’ gallops, where the object is to get them filmed for public consumption on television, websites and on social media. The popularity of the gallops among hard core racing people however, meant that there was still a nucleus of professional observers, leading trainers, champion jockeys and dyed-in-the-wool owners and racing fans at Summerhill last Thursday, notwithstanding the sudden change of date on account of a nasty weather alert. And the horses. Especially the horses, more so as the word leaking from the assembly of various consignors was that this draft, if not the best ever, would at least rival the one that gave racing three Group One-winning sophomores just this past season, Takingthepeace, Hero’s Honour and Brave Mary, not to mention Chesney van Zyl’s highly regarded Group One runner-up, Railtrip. While it’s easy to forget just how

good the 2016 vintage was, there was a solid body of opinion among the top horsemen in the camp that this was the draft of all drafts, and while predictions can sometimes stray in the world of the racehorse, knowing those gathered and the sheer weight of their experience, as a player you’d want to be paying attention. Watch them from Wednesday 17 October!

Drakenstein Stud’s Cartier Champion Duke Of Marmalade enjoyed a memorable weekend with the son of Danehill producing another European group winner and also featuring as a half-brother to two impressive performers overseas.

uke Of Marmalade ‘s talented three-year-old daughter Flower Party picked up the first group win of her career when she won the Gr3 Premio Verziere Memorial Aldo Cirla at San Siro on Saturday. Flower Party, one of 37 stakes winners thus far for Duke Of Marmalade, had previously won the Listed Premio Archidamia by ten lengths, and also finished second in the Gr2 Oaks d’Italia (Italian Oaks) earlier in the year. Her five time Gr1 winning sire Duke Of Marmalade is a halfbrother to exciting two-yearold Norway, who showed his class when winning the Listed Godolphin Flying Zetland Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. Trained (like Duke Of Marmalade), by Aidan O’Brien, 2yo Norway was produced down the centre of the track by Seamie

Heffernan to hit the front inside the final furlong and beat I’ll Have Another (12/1) by a length. Norway was quoted at 25-1 for the 2019 Investec Derby following Saturday’s win. Another half-brother to Duke Of Marmalade and full-brother to Norway, the 2013 Gr1 Investec Derby hero Ruler Of The World, made headlines when his daughter Iridessa captured Friday’s Gr1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. A first Gr1 winner - from his first crop - for Ruler Of The World, Iridessa powered clear to beat favourite, and Gr3 Weld Park Stakes winner Hermosa by a length and a half, with Gr1 Prix Morny heroine Pretty Pollyanna three parts of a length away in third. Now a winner of two of four outings, Iridessa now appears a likely hope for the 2019 classics. She was quoted a 16-1 chance after Friday’s race for the 2019 Investec Oaks.

A review of the week's best SPEEDRATINGS

Stable In Form

Turffontein 11 October This was the meeting originally scheduled to take place at the Vaal. A workrider’s maiden plate got proceedings underway on the inner track on Thursday and here we saw a very comfortable victory for the second favourite CORRIDO. Content to race eighth of the nine for most of the journey, Paul Peter’s charge quickened best of all coming off the strip and after striking the front 300m out, won going away by three and a quarter. The boy’s division was comfortably the faster of the two maiden plates for 3yo’s over 1200m and here the stable of Paul Peter were again on the mark when the heavily supported MONOPOLIZE did the business. Always in the red, the lightly raced son of Elusive Fort raced fourth early on. He put his head in front as they approached the 400m marker and kept on strongly late to beat the supported newcomer VONTREO by a half. The bill topping pinnacle stakes over 1000m was comparatively the fastest race on the card and here we saw a smart performance from the 4yo REBEL’S CHAMP. The third of three winners on the card for the Paul Peter stable, the Rebel King gelding raced at the back of the seven early on. Once in the short home straight though he ran on best of all, and cruised clear below the distance after striking the front 70m from home. TITBITS Lightly raced TRAFFIC JAM showed good improvement when easily accounting for her ten rivals in the maiden plate for the girls over 1600m.

Gavin’s Big Five

Bred For Success

Fairview 12 October A pinnacle stakes over 1400m topped the bill in Port Elizabeth on Friday and here we saw a comfortable victory for the second favourite DAWNBREAKER. Taken straight to the front in a small field of just five, Gavin Smith’s charge led throughout. She kept on strongly at the business end of the race and won well by a length and a quarter from the favourite CAPTAIN MARMALADE. The MR65 Handicap was the faster of the two 1600m events on the card and here the stable of Gavin Smith were again on the mark when LATE AUTUMN registered his second career victory. Well supported on course into 7/2, the son of Gimmethegreenlight was always handy. The veteran APOC got first run in the straight and after striking the front 350m out that one looked to have done everything right. Late Autumn ran on stoutly over the final 200m though, and in what proved to be a real thriller he got up in the very last stride. The only other distance to stage more than one race was 2000m where the quickest home was SEATTLE SWING in the MR72 Handicap. On leaving the stalls it was ALL THE BIDS who elected to make the running whilst Gavin Smith’s (5 winners on the day) charge sat close up in fourth. Sent off favourite, the newcomer IN A PERFECT WORLD ran on well from off the pace to beat his stable companion ADALBERTO a lot more easily than the official winning margin of a short head would suggest.

The very nicely bred Mike De Kock trained newcomer ISLE DE FRANCE was heavily supported to win the opening maiden plate for 3yo fillies over 1450m, and the daughter of Var didn’t let down her followers. Backed into 13/10 favourite from 7/1, Isle De France raced in the backend of midfield for most of the journey. She quickened in good style coming off the strip and cruised clear after hitting the front 200m out, to score by four There were three races run over 1450m in total and the fastest of these was the Assessment Plate won by the well weighted SILVER GOD. Priced up as the lesser fancied of Sean Tarry’s three runners, the son of Silvano raced sixth of the ten early on. He was all out over the final 300m and only got to the front running RULE THE NIGHT 50m from home. Race three on the card was a MR91 Handicap over 1600m and in a race run in heavy rain and thunder, the High Chaparral mare BEING FABULOUS registered her fourth career victory. Taken straight to the front by Warren Kennedy, Being Fabulous led throughout. She

Weights Defy Pace Greyville 14 October Most of the better races on this card were very falsely run and amongst them was the bill topping KZN Guineas Trial over 1600m won by ADRIANOS SHADOW. Confidently ridden by Musi Yeni, the best weighted runner in the field raced fourth of the seven for most of the journey. She was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 300m marker and won going away from the improving GENEROUS LADY. Run in a time 0,74 seconds faster than the guineas trial was the graduation plate won by THE BAYOU. Freely available at 11/2 on the off, Paul Lafferty’s charge ran on stoutly from midfield. He moved up to dispute matters with AMOR ARDIENTE (led 250m) 150m out and after a thrilling tussle below the distance, he got

the verdict on the nod. ROY’S RIVIERA was clearly the one to beat in the pinnacle stakes over 1800m and despite this being another very false paced affair, class did tell. She lost two lengths at the start and for most of the journey raced at the rear. The field was always very tightly bunched though and when the race developed into a sprint early in the straight she quickened best of all TITBITS The newcomer MARCHETTO won the opening maiden plate over 1200m more easily than the official winning margin of half a length would suggest.

Four For Corrie

Flamingo Park 15 October First up in Kimberley on Monday was a maiden plate over 1000m and here we saw a very easy victory for the Corrie Lensley trained DIRECTOR’S ROCK. Having his first outing here since relocating from the Western Cape, the 3yo son of Seventh Rock was soon up with the pace. He only had to be pushed out at the business end of the race and cruised in by three. This proved to be the fastest of the three 1000m races. Trainer Corrie Lensley was also on the mark in race three, a maiden plate over 1400m, where he saddled seven of the ten runners. Amazingly though, it was only the sixth best fancied of his runners in the betting market PRINCE JOSH who landed the spoils. Freely available at 20/1 on the off in this his first outing since relocating from the Western Cape, the son of Horse Chestnut went straight to the front and soon had the field very strung out. He kept on determinedly under a strong ride from Nicholas Patel, and with the rest well beaten he won by a length and a half from his running on stable companion PANTHER STRIKE (8/1). There were a number of very easy victories on the card and none more so than that of JUST ASK ME in the MR84 Handicap over 1400m. Well weighted on earlier form, the veteran Seul Amour gelding was soon at the head of affairs. He was five lengths clear entering the home straight and extended that advantage to six and three quarters before crossing the line. TITBITS Horses worth following at their next few starts...

Soon two lengths clear, PAMUNKEY was always in command when getting off the mark in the maiden plate for the girls over 1000m.

skipped two and a half lengths clear at the top of the straight and although INSIGNIS did make some headway over the final 400m, she still had just over a length to spare at the wire. TITBITS The lightly raced 3yo PROFESSIONAL was finishing best of all when a 0,4 length runner up in the boy’s division of the maiden plate for 3yo’s over 1450m. Due to the weather and the deteriorating track condition this meeting was abandoned after the running of race 4.

promise as a broodmare sire and is damsire of 2018 group winners Antonia De Vega and Chilean. Love Me True’s weekend success, however, was not limited to group winners sired by her Gr1 winning sons.

T

Former French 2000 Guineas winner Kingmambo continues to exert considerable influence as a broodmare sire.

he son of Mr Prospector and Miesque is damsire of more than 80 black type winners, with Kingmambo daughters having produced the likes of multiple German Gr1 winner Best Solution (Kodiac), Geoffrey Freer Stakes winner Hamada (Cape Cross) and Gordon Stakes winner Cross Counter (Teofilo) in 2018. Locally, Kingmambo is damsire of dual Track And Ball Oaks winner Witchcraft, among others. Kingmambo is also damsire of four time Gr1 winner and emerging stallion Camelot, whose impressive first crop contains such Gr1 winners as Athena (Belmont Oaks) and Latrobe (Irish Derby).

Regal He is also the sire of Love Me True, a regally bred matriarch whose descendants hit the headlines over the past weekend. Herself a stakes placed winner (she was third in the Gr3 Killavullan Stakes), Love Me True was firmly established as a high class mare prior to this weekend, with her progeny including five time Gr1 winner Cartier Champion Duke Of Marmalade as well as Gr1 Investec Derby hero and Coolmore sire Ruler Of The World. However, Love Me True took her

Classic

status to a new level this weekend, with a pair of sons responsible for group winners over the weekend, and another son landing the Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. Her classic winning son Ruler Of The World hit the headlines when he came up with a first Gr1 winner in the form of Iridessa. The latter gave her sire a Gr1 winner from his first crop when she stormed home to win the Gr1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile (one of Britain’s top contests for 2yo fillies) at Newmarket on Friday. Iridessa is interestingly bred with her dam, Senta’s Dream, being sired by Danehill – who is the sire of Ruler Of The World’s champion half-brother Duke Of Marmalade. This Gr1 success has sent Ruler Of The World, who himself was unraced at two, into the second spot on Britain’s Leading Second Crop Sires, with the son of Galileo second only to the sensational No Nay Never (Scat Daddy). Ruler Of The World was not the only son of Love Me True responsible for a group winner this weekend, with his half-brother Duke Of Marmalade sire of Saturday’s Gr3 Premio Verziere Memorial Aldo Cirla winner Flower Party. The latter is inbred to Lassie Dear, with her dam being sired by a son of A P Indy – a grandson of Lassie Dear.

Duke Rules Duke Of Marmalade, who has two members of his first South Africa nominated for the upcoming Western Cape Fillies Championship, has 37 black type winners to his name, with his notable performers including the G1r winners Big Orange, Simple Verse, Nutan, Sound Of Freedom, and Star Of Seville. Duke Of Marmalade has enjoyed success when mated with daughters

of Galileo and the latter’s sire Sadler’s Wells. When mated to daughters of Galileo, Duke Of Marmalade has come up with the likes of dual Oaks winner Venus De Milo while when sent mares by Sadler’s Wells or another of his sons, Duke Of Marmalade has sired such as St Leger winning champion Simple Verse, French Gr2 winner Traffic Jam, and Melbourne Cup contender Marmelo. Duke Of Marmalade is showing

She is also dam of Norway (a Galileo own brother to Ruler Of The World) who stamped himself a colt to follow when landing the ten furlong Zetland Stakes in pleasing style. A colt who holds entries in both 27th October’s Gr1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes and the 2019 Investec Derby, Norway is certainly bred for the classics and, while a way below the top performers this season, may well have further improvement to come in 2019. To date, Love Me True has a total of nine winners, including four stakes winners and two black type performers. Her other notable runners include Gr1 Irish Derby third Giovanni Canaletto (Galileo) and Gr2 Adelaide Cup winner Annus Mirabilis. Love Me True’s stud success hardly comes as much of a surprise. Not only has she been mated to some of the world’s best stallions (Duke Of Marmalade is by Danehill, while her other notable performers were sired by Galileo and Montjeu), Love Me True is from a female line as potent as any other in recent memory. She is out of Lassie’s Lady, a stakes placed Alydar half-sister to Champion SA sire Al Mufti, US Broodmare Of The Year Weekend Surprise, and dual Gr1 winner Wolfhound - the latter sire of Bungle Inthejungle – one of the Leading First Crop Sires in GB/ Ireland this year. Love Me True is also a three-parts sister to five time Gr1 winner and champion Lemon Drop Kid, a top class sire, and, if anything a better broodmare sire than his own sire Kingmambo.

A brother to Saturday’s Dewhurst Stakes winner Too Darn Hot became the most expensive yearling sold at auction this year when fetching 3.5 million guineas at Tattersalls in Newmarket last Wednesday.

y Dubawi out of Dar Re Mi, the colt was consigned by Watership Down Stud and bought by David Redvers, on behalf of Qatar Racing. The price of the youngster beat the previous best of 3.4m guineas for a Galileo colt, sold to the Coolmore operation on Tuesday.

Qatar Racing have enjoyed great success this season with multiple Group One scorer Roaring Lion, trained like Too Darn Hot by John Gosden. Redvers told Tattersalls: “This is the sort of horse that Sheikh Fahad and his brothers want to own – they want to participate at the highest level and have had a taste of it this

year with Roaring Lion. “The colt is out of an exceptional mare and by an exception stallion. It is very hard to put a value on horse such as this – you can see lovely horses selling for good money and yet they still are not the best. “We are looking to make commercial stallions – let’s hope that he goes out and lives up to all the potential that he has. He could look a cheap buy in future. “I think you can guess where he will go into training.” Too Darn Hot, brother to high-

class pair So Mi Dar and Lah Ti Dar, is unbeaten in four starts, most recently in the Dewhurst at Newmarket on Saturday. Such was his superiority over some of the best juvenile colts in Europe, big-race rider Frankie Dettori was up in the saddle and celebrating within the last 50 yards, yet the two and threequarter length-winning margin back to Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner Advertise tells only half the story. Incredibly, his eye-watering success provided both Dettori and winning trainer John Gosden with a first success in the race, and there was no question from either they were dealing with something out of the ordinary.

Smart!

VAR, who is currently South Africa’s Leading Sire by stakes, looks to have a smart sort in the form of Mike de Kock’s Saturday debut winner Isle De France. The filly produced a devastating turn of foot to win the 1450m Turtffontein maiden as she liked. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein, the 3yo is a daughter of the SA Oaks winner Ilha Bela (Fort Wood). She is bred on the same Var/ Fort Wood cross as 2013 Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint winner Contador.
