Sabina’s Dynasty is finding her best form and can challenge

Gr3 VICTORY MOON STAKES at Turffontein this Thursday

Moon Magic Under Lights

W

A rare Thursday evening double feature under the Turffontein lights provides some welcome variation for punters this week. After Girl On The Run's sensational victory in the 2017 renewal, can the R400 000 Gr3 Victory Moon Stakes be fought out by two talented members of the fairer sex brigade again?

eighted on merit rating bands, this feature, named in honour of one of our great equine athletes, has a very open look to it and cognisance should also be taken that it is often used as a Summer Cup prep - or a last gasp access pass for the big one in some borderline cases. Whatever the priority, a good showing in the Victory Moon can only be a plus for the Summer Cup date a fortnight away. Fourteen of the fifteen runners are Summer Cup entries, with the exception being the SP top-rated Zouaves. This 5yo son of Sail From Seattle tries the 1800m for the first time after a luckless second behind Tsitsikamma Dance in the Grand Series leg 2 last month. Racing from a nice draw with only 52kgs to shoulder, he is in prime form and a big effort is expected. While his dam only won at 1200m, his racing style suggests that he can be relaxed and turn it on late in proceedings. Mike De Kock has a two-pronged attack headed by last season's very capable Triple Tiara bridesmaid Takingthepeace. With two nice runs under the belt as a 4yo - her last being a solid effort over the 1800m on the inside track, when giving weight and beaten under a length by the capable Fort Ember – she stays

every inch of the trip and she will be running at them late. Last season's Gerald Rosenberg winner, Sabina's Dynasty, has the major advantage of a rail draw and the value added skills from the cockpit of the master, Piere Strydom. The daughter of Dynasty has been edging back to her best form with two good placed efforts this term, and ran on really nicely when third behind Warfarer in the listed Michaelmas at Greyville last month. The 7yo French Navy is the first of the Sean Tarry trio. The very capable son of Count Du Bois is realistically past his prime and was beaten over 8 lengths by rising star Buffalo Bill Cody last time. Ashley Fortune's Cash Time has unfortunately pulled a wide draw and will need to improve on his three most recent runs, when showing pace but fading out. Highly regarded as a 3yo, he can be expected to start finding his better form as the season develops. Anton Marcus is an interesting jockey booking for the 7yo Bulleting Home, who was beaten almost 6 lengths in the Charity Mile at his last start. His recent form suggests that he has some ground to make up to challenge, having last won in March 2017 on the Greyville polytrack. It has also been some time since Bankable Teddy's last win and the 6yo Bankable gelding is probably

at his optimum over 200m further. That said, he has had two recent runs under the belt and if suffering no aftereffects from his lame pull up at his penultimate start, could run into the money. Big race jockey Muzi Yeni takes the reins on the fast improving Gambado, a winner of his last four starts - his only unplaced effort was in the SA Derby - and a horse on the upgrade. He showed good resolve over the course and distance last time when beating the highly regarded The Rising Legend and comes in with a handy 52kg. Now a 7yo, the classy Deo Juvente has shown good commitment at his first two starts this season - running on well from way off the gallop, as is his style. While he has not won for some time, he certainly has the ability to beat this field if on top of his game. Gavin Lerena partners Arctica for Mike Azzie. The son of a Captain Al has maintained his form over an extended period and was under a length behind Coral Fever in the Charity Mile in his last start. While he has not won since February, and he was unplaced in the race last year, a win would not be a surprise. The Call To Combat entire Dawn Assault beat Sabina's Dynasty a length over the Turffontein 2000m last time but meets the Dynasty mare on 4kg worse terms. He is also widely drawn and will need some luck to feature. The versatile Tandava has not won since February when scoring over the Vaal 1000m. He was on the heels of Big Mistake in the Grand Series Consolation at his last start but does not appear to boast the credentials to feature here. Drawn worst of the lot, Like A Panther is the second of the Mike De Kock duo. The 4yo registered a confidence boosting win over stablemate Wheel Of Time in an Assessment Plate at the Vaal at his last start. While he was weighted to win that, it would be

folly to disregard the fact that he was considered good enough to travel to Cape Town for the classics last summer. He ran a nice race for third behind Tap O’ Noth in the Guineas and would be dangerous if recapturing his better 3yo form. Full Mast looked dangerous late in proceedings in the Charity Mile but faded out to finish second last. He gets the services of Weichong Marwing and could be a much better proposition with a favourable draw on Thursday evening. The topweight Liege has his final prep in advance of his defence of his 2017 Summer Cup title. Winless since that peak day in his career, he may be worth another chance. So a really tough race and a ‘gowide’ leg in the Pick 6.

The form ladies Takingthepeace and Sabina’s Dynasty could show up the boys and fight it out. But don’t write off Zouaves if he stays – or Like A Panther, who has been edging back to best.

Good Moon Rising The memory of top-class racehorse Victory Moon, who died at Maine Chance as a young stallion in July 2009, is honoured with the running of Thursday evening’s feature race. He won his only start here – a Scottsville 1200m maiden – and helped to put South Africa on the world racing map with a victory in the 2003 Gr2 UAE Derby. He won a total of 7 races from 13 starts and over $US2,4 million in stakes. His successes included the Gr3 UAE 2000 Guineas and he finished third in the 2004 Dubai World Cup. At the time of Victory Moon’s passing, stud manager John Slade said: “This great horse changed many people’s lives. He was owned in partnership by the Victory Moon Syndicate and several other prominent stud farms. John Maroun, for one, is devastated. He lived for Victory Moon. This happened at a time when Victory Moon was starting to shape as a stallion.” By Al Mufti from Dancing Flower, Victory Moon was bought for R5 million at Mike de Kock and Dean Maroun’s dispersal sale and covered more than 100 mares a season for four seasons. His first Gr1 winner came in July 2011 when Princess Victoria won the Durban Golden Slipper.

Bridge To Glory

WOOLAVINGTON HANDICAP (L) Kenilworth last Sunday Sandile Mbhele makes it a personal double as he guides Benjan to victory

Candice Bass-Robinson broke the Snaith stranglehold on the Listed Woolavington Handicap when she saddled the first three home in the 2400m feature at a sundrenched Kenilworth.

oung apprentice Sandile Mbhele crowned a personal double on the afternoon after upsetting Pick 6 punters earlier with the Alado filly Grandiflora, and he rode a determined race to get the well-bred Fort Wood gelding Benjan home for the 6yo’s first stakes score. With the most fancied of the Bass-Robinson trio, the Australianbred Ballad Of The Sea, setting the fractions ahead of Sister Soozie

and Rock My Soul, Mbhele rode a patient race as he stalked the leaders in fourth position about three lengths off the action for much of the journey. He set sail for home at the 300m and it was left to his long-suffering bridesmaid stablemate Ollivander – also in the Marsh Shirtliff silks – to come out of the pack to do the chasing. But under a vigorous ride Benjan stayed on best of all to beat

Ollivander by 2,50 lengths in a time of 148,65 secs with the more fancied Ballad Of The Sea fading into third after making most of the running A R420 000 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale graduate, Benjan gave Mauritzfontein a feature double on the day after Rainbow Bridge’s eyecatching success in the Cape Mile earlier. Benjan is by Fort Wood (Sadler’s Wells) out of the UK-bred Machiavellian mare, Awaited – an unraced half sister to the wellperformed Esmaltina, from the famous ‘E family’. He has won 4 races with 12 places from 29 starts and stakes of R403 300.

Cape racing reaffirmed its newest and fastest rising star as the undefeated Rainbow Bridge produced an exercise gallop type stretch to win the R150 000 Cape Mile unextended, and make it five out of five.

he treble Gr3 winner was technically out at the handicap with Investec Cape Derby winner Eyes Wide Open and the stakes winner Fifty Cents, but his 104 rating looks like little more than an official number at this stage, shaded by the red tape of the restrictions on our handicappers. Taking on ten opponents in the non black-type feature on a warm afternoon that saw him sweating badly, Bernard Fayd’herbe had Rainbow Bridge relaxed in midfield as the well-backed Silver Maple went hard out front in receipt of 9kgs. The former Geoff Woodruff galloper went quickly under Lyle Hewitson and led The Slade, Fifty Cents and Copper Force into the 350m. But in a matter of strides Rainbow Bridge lengthened and drew away from his field to win easily under the hands by 1,75 length in a time of 96,18 secs. Silver Maple stayed on to bank second cheque, with the runner-up’s stablemate Platinum Prince finishing well for third. The 2017 Gr2 Selangor Cup winner Rocket Countdown moved up but appeared in need of the run and flattened to run a 3,40 length fourth. Derby winner Eyes Wide Open was beaten into fifth.

“I was going at my own pace – I just wanted him to drop the bit and enjoy it. And he did just that. He has a great turn of foot and is a very smart horse. This was a gallop – he is an athlete and loves to run,” said Bernard Fayd’herbe who was only a passenger for the mile. Trainer Eric Sands confirmed that as Rainbow Bridge has settled down he is showing more ability. “He is phenomenal and we will now go to the Green Point, the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and then the Sun Met on 26 January, “ he added. A winner of 5 from 5 and stakes of R612 50, Rainbow Bridge, who races in the blue and yellow silks of the late Chris Gerber, was a R300 000 National Yearling Sale buy. He was bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein and is a 4yo gelded son of Ideal World (Kingmambo) out of the versatile seven-time winner Halfway To Heaven (Jet Master), whose successes included the 2013 Gr3 Prix Du Cap. Eric Sands trained the dam for Gavin Walker until she was sold to Mauritzfontein, in whose silks she raced for Mike de Kock until the end of her career.

last Weekend Guineas Plate

Fairview Friday

Bold Exacta Vodacom Durban July and international winner Bold Silvano gave owner Gail Thomson some of the greatest thrills of her racing life. Showing her Dad’s courage and heart, his smart daughter Klever Kathy beat the favourite March Music in the Guineas Plate at Fairview on Friday to make it a feature exacta for the classy Ascot Stud stallion. With Oratorio’s daughter Carlita lumping top weight in the 1400m non black-type feature, a Bold Silvano exacta was always on the cards and the inform Winning Form flagbearer Muzi Yeni rode a terrific tactical race on the Gavin Smith-trained Klever Kathy. In a field of seven, the high-onconfidence Yeni took Klever Kathy out to dictate the pace and she was never headed.

Coming into the 300m, Greg Cheyne was making his way from last on Carlita as March Music tried her hardest to get to the pacemaker. But Klever Kathy was not for the catching and she kept on gamely to make it two on the trot over her favourite course and distance. With the official winning margin a comfortable length, Klever Kathy registered her third win from 12 starts in a consistent career that has seen her run 7 places. Her time was 83,24 secs on a sunny afternoon. Klever Kathy, who races in the Gail Thomson pink and green silks, has now earned R221 725 and has been a genuine model of consistency. She was bred at Gail Thomson’s Bathurst based Riyo Stud and is out of the Casey Tibbs mare, Bretton Wood.

The Summerveld raiding combination of Dennis Drier and Sean Veale opened their 2018/19 Cape summer campaign in style with the Ridgemont bred Anime providing them with a double in the R150 000 Listed Laisserfaire Stakes.

he high-class subsequent Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint victress Sommerlied had done the honours for the Durban visitors in 2017, when Sunday’s gutsy winner Anime had run a close-up fourth. With the underrated Veale in a determined frame, Anime took the fight to the locals on the sunny Sunday and went all the way to

register a deserved first stakes win in the famous silks of the Badge Boys. The daughter of Count Dubois showed her customary speed and held off all challengers to win by 0,30 lengths in a time of 65,27 secs from Olympic Duel Stakes winner Freedom Charter and the 2017 runner-up and favourite, Casual Jewel. The top trio finished within 0,35 lengths of each other, with longshot

Sequined giving the quartet some momentum when running 1,25 lengths back in fourth. The top-class Magical Wonderland was always labouring and finished over 5 lengths back downfield. Anime has won 3 races with 12 places from 19 starts for stakes of R378 425. Bred by Ridgemont, she is by Count Dubois (Zafonic) out of four-time winner Rei Rei. The latter is a daughter of Doowaley, who interestingly was trained for the same owners by Sunday’s oncourse presenter, Stan Elley.

Wainstein – ‘Wait For Results’ Hollywood The Racing Association’s National Board election results will be announced at the owner body’s AGM at Turffontein on 11 December.

The Sporting Post was approached by interested parties on the news that the counting of votes may have been completed by auditors BRF & Co last week. We contacted the firm as well as the Racing Association for comment. Various questions, except any direct reference to the final outcome, were put by ourselves in writing to Brett Kaye of BRF. “I have no comment to make regarding this matter – please direct your queries to the RA,” was the response. RA CEO Larry Wainstein confirmed that, as had been the case in the past, the results would be announced at the forthcoming AGM.

“This has always been the process and that is the way it will be handled again. There is no reason to deviate from the way it has always been done,” said Mr Wainstein. On suggestions that, in view of the interim period, the results could be conveyed to others close to the RA, he confirmed that he would never compromise himself or the organisation by disclosing the information to anybody. “What would anybody have to gain out of that? The outcome will be announced on 11 December, which is a raceday. I look forward to a good turnout and hope that we will all be working together for the better good of horseracing in the year ahead,” he added.

Dingaans Countdown Port Elizabeth-based trainer Yvette Bremner believes that lightning can strike twice and has entered her sensational Graham Beck Stakes winner National Park for the R500 000 Gr2 Dingaans at Turffontein, run a week before Summer Cup Saturday.

The feature is a reliable indicator to the classic potential in the current 3yo crop. National Park was a surprise winner for many of the Graham Beck on 3 November when he blew highly rated local Chimichuri Run away by 5,80 lengths. After receiving a kilo there, the PE raider may meet Chimichuri Run at level weights – the latter races off a merit rating of 116, the highest among the 20 entries. The entry list includes Mike de Kock’s Soqrat, the 2017/ 18 Equus Champion Two-Year-old Colt.

Last season’s Equus champion 2yo filly Return Flight, the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes winner, is amongst the 22 entries for the female equivalent, the R275 000 Gr3 Fillies Mile, the support feature on the day. She could face St John Gray’s Ronnie’s Candy, the recent Starling Stakes winner, who races as the highestrated entry, with an MR of 107 Supplementary Entries close at 09h00 on Friday 16 November. Declarations are due by 11h00 on Monday 19 November. See the entries on www.sportingpost.co.za

Betting On Summer

The recent Gr2 Charity Mile winner Coral Fever tops the weights for the R2 million Gr1 Summer Cup to be run over 2000m at Turffontein on 1 December 2018.

Final supplementary entries close at 11h00 on Monday 19 November. The final field will be announced on Tuesday 20 November with the barrier draws at an event 24 hours after that. Hollywoodbets have ante-post betting open for the big Summer Cup day features on 1 December. Visit www.hollywoodbets.net

Farewell To Top Jockey Dave Byrnes, a courageous and talented jockey who successfully plied his trade in the USA, died on Tuesday after a long illness.

I

European horseracing's equivalent of the Oscars, the 28th Cartier Racing Awards were announced at a glittering ceremony before an invited audience at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Tuesday evening.

oaring Lion, owned by Qatar Racing Limited, the outstandingly talented and consistent threeyear-old colt becomes the fourth Cartier Horse Of The Year in the last five years to be trained by John Gosden at Newmarket, following on from Kingman (2014), Golden Horn (2015) and Enable (2017). Purchased as a yearling by Qatar Racing's racing manager David Redvers at the 2016 Keeneland September sale for US$160,000, the son of Kitten's Joy enjoyed an outstanding year with victories in three Gr1 contests over 10 furlongs in the space of just over two months from July to September - the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park, the Juddmonte International at York and the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. Roaring Lion followed up on those superb wins with a fourth straight Gr1 success when dropped down in distance to a mile for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day on October 20.

It is rare to see Hong Kong champion jockey Zac Purton salute after a victory – even in a Group 1 race – so when he stands up in the irons and flourishes the whip, you know he really enjoyed it.

e did that after You Have My Word’s narrow victory at Sha Tin on Saturday, and there was some extra meaning to it. Hong Kong racing fans immediately twigged the significance – and that Grant van Niekerk was on the receiving end of a bitter lesson. Purton is in a spat with Van Niekerk – both on and off the track – which was brought into the public sphere after the Australian was critical on Twitter about one of the South African’s rides last month. Stewards handed Purton a HK$5,000 fine last Wednesday night for “inappropriate behaviour” over the incident, which had a crack at Van Niekerk’s handling of You Have My Word – the very same horse that Purton was celebrating on a few days later, having persuaded the connections to “jock off” Van Niekerk and give him a chance on the gelding. Purton was determined to deliver a victory for trainer Benno Yung Tin and remind the newcomer from Cape Town who is top dog in Hong Kong. “Sometimes life in racing can be a little bit boring and a little bit of drama adds theatre to things,” Purton said.

“It’s been a bit of a talking point in Hong Kong. Obviously, I’m not allowed to be critical of Grant but I’m sure he’ll go home and watch the replay and he would’ve learned something out of what happened last time and today.” Purton is at his best when challenged, as he showed last season in his championship fight with Joao Moreira, and it was reiterated on Saturday when On Saturday, Karis Teetan took out the opening race to join him at the top of the current table on 24 wins. But that tie only lasted until the third race when Purton punched home the first of a treble. “I know how things are going,” Purton responded when asked if he was aware that South African-trained Mauritian Teetan had levelled up with him. “Karis has got a lot of support at the moment, he’s going well, he’s enjoying his racing which is good, but there’s a long way to go so I’ll keep chipping away.” By the end of the day the lead was back to three wins thanks to You Have My Word and Frankie Lor Fu-chuen’s duo of Right Choice and Witness Hunter.

ON THE LOGS

Fit Or Flat? Too much exercise can be a killer. Ask jockey Evan Daly who was cautioned by stewards after he was nearly run over in the back straight while out running during Navan’s Gr3 Novice Hurdle on Sunday. Fitness fanatic Daly was listening to music (some big hits…maybe?) on his headphones while running in preparation for a ride later on the card. He was oblivious to the seven runners who loomed over his left shoulder, and only avoided being hit after last minute shouts from the riders made him take evasive action.

Muzi Yeni is 9 wins ahead of Ryan Munger at the top of the SA national log after his double at Flamingo Park on Monday. The jockeys with the best strike rate are Anton Marcus (30%), Gavin Lerena (27%) and Richard Fourie (25%). Sean Tarry (39 winners) has edged R200 000 ahead of reigning champion Justin Snaith (50 winners) on the national trainers log.

Snakes Alive! “I said to Dennis Bosch that he was wasting his time with this horse. He can’t get any wind. It sounds as if there is an anaconda in his oesophagus.” The words of Anton Marcus after he had steered the Oratorio gelding Chantyman – a horse he describes as one of the most courageous he has ridden - to his 2nd win in 9 starts (5 places) at Greyville on Friday evening. Chantyman’s oesophagus has apparently never developed since he was a baby. So he is lethal over the sprints – but no further!

The Eagle Hovers

NUDGE, NUDGE – Ear, Ear… WINX, WINX

The 7yo Ryalex won by 24 lengths at Carlisle Racecourse on Monday - but that wasn't the only reason he captured attention. The gelding has just one ear. While his appearance is uncommon, it doesn't seem to impact his racing, which he showed when giving his rivals a hiding in the handicap chase. The Lucinda Russell-trained gelding usually races in a hood, which means the missing ear doesn't often get noticed. He lost it in an accident in Ireland.

Past dual SA Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle makes his seasonal debut in the eighth race at Thursday’s Turffontein night meeting, following a sixmonth layoff. The 7yo, who boasts 13 wins from 24 starts for Sean Tarry, will contest a Pinnacle Stakes over 1160m. He is expected to bid for a 4th L‘Ormarins Queen’s Plate win in 2019 - but has a few rainbow bridges to Terrific support from breeders across cross, as it were, after we watched the Cape Mile on Sunday! Australasia has led to Magic Millions cataloguing a record number of lots in a star studded catalogue for the 2019 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. 1122 lots have been confirmed by vendors for the first five days of the auction, including a record 888 lots to be offered across Book 1 of the sale from Wednesday 9 January. This sale is number one for producing breed shapers and record breakers, including the two highest ever stakes earners in Australian history - Winx and Redzel. Find the catalogue on www.magicmillions.com.au

Go Gavin! Gavin Lerena has commenced his job as retained rider to Wilgerbosdrift/Mauritzfontein with two winners for the in-form Mike de Kock stable, who boast a tally of 9 winners in the first 10 days of November. Lerena booted home Protea Paradise (Mary Slack) in a Maiden Plate over 1600m at the Vaal last Thursday and followed up with Storm Destiny (Mary Slack and Michael Javett) in an Assessment Plate over 1600m at Turffontein Saturday.

Noble Stuff Rathmor stallion Noble Tune’s Curlin half-sister sold for $600 000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale earlier this month. The half-sister to Gr1 winner Honor Code, Gr1 Breeders Cup placed Noble Tune, the handsome Declarationofpeace and Stakes horse Lady Serena, dam Serena’s Cat has been an outstanding broodmare and saw her Curlin filly achieve the third-highest price for a weanling during the Book 1 session. She was bred in Kentucky by Dell Ridge Farm and Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings. The weanling filly sold to Meadow Oaks Racing Stables.

Monique Schabort

M

Proud of her rock solid educational foundation, and with a pedigree boasting old-fashioned family values and a love of horses, Paarl Diamant Estate’s Monique Schabort is a relatively new generation player in the horseracing game.

eeting the vivacious platinum blonde Mother of two, Monique Schabort, at the main house on the magnificent 300 hectare estate that transcends both sides of the R44 between Klapmuts and Wellington, a sense of warmth and salt-of-the-earth hospitality is tangible. Her Public Relations training shines through as she welcomes the SP Team in queen’s English, tinged with a blemish of homegrown Paarl. Imagine living and working in god’s country – that’s our initial rhetoric while absorbing the picturesque surrounds. “I have been in the area most of my life and appreciate the beauty of it every day. I was born in Robertson and we moved to Paarl when I was 2 years old. My late Mom worked for KWV for roughly 35 years and my Dad owned a couple of car dealerships in Paarl. I went to Paarl Gymnasium all the way through from Grade R to Grade 12 and then went on studying public relations in Cape Town. So I am a proud ‘Gimmie’ forever,” proclaims the 37 year old who was born Monique Viljoen - until meeting her Equine Dentist husband Louw Schabort 16 years ago. In racing parlance, ‘Gimmie’ is often an affectionate reference to the top-class Aussie bred Varsfontein stallion who lives down the scenic road that winds past the Kotzen’s Woodhill Estate, in the vicinity of the Garlicki’s Connemara Stud and the Andrews’ Sorrento. But in this case it is actually a proud label worn by alumni, like Monique, of the historic school in the centre of Paarl that many of us Southern Suburbanites dreaded meeting on the sports pitch. These were the maroon, gold and green fields in the shadow of the Paarl Rock that produced the likes of Schalk Burger, Jean De Villiers, Marius Joubert, Handré Pollard and De Wet Barry. Monique explains that Paarl

Diamant has been in the Schabort family for many decades and as a result of an availability of land, coupled with a confluence of dreams and opportunities, they decided a few years back to up the ante and diversify. “There was cattle on the farm and we were growing oat-hay and other crops - but there was always the nagging desire to bring in the horses. I had been with Pioneer Foods for over a decade and my kids – Lowen is 5 and Sophia is 2 - were getting to the age where I wanted to be more involved in their lives. So the planets were aligned to introduce the horses and for me to get involved and make the move out of the corporate environment.” So she and husband Louw – a highly regarded Equine Dentist took the plunge into a whole new world and on Friday 23 November will attend their fourth sale. The farm has a professional and world-class infrastructure with 48 stables, irrigated grass paddocks, smaller paddocks for rehab horses, lunge rings and large exercise areas and 24hour supervision. “We've done our best to plant plenty more trees. It is not easy with horses, but we're getting there!” laughs Monique as she points out a playful horse fiddling with one of her newly planted trees. “Our very first sale was last year’s RTR sale. Then we attended the mixed sale at Durbanville in July 2018. After that it was the 2yo sale in Johannesburg. We have met lovely people in the industry, although it was quite scary going in to the unknown and not knowing many people or having hardly

any connections. And wondering if we made the right decision going in the direction of racing. But our business has grown every year since we started and I have to say a big word of appreciation to Joey Ramsden who took a chance on us by sending us our first horses to spell and break-in. We will always be indebted to him for taking a chance on us.” One thing led to another and Paarl Diamant expanded their services offering. They are currently doing mainly Pre-Training, Spelling & Rehabilitation, Broodmare and foal care and Sales Preparation They certainly have enough skill and experience amongst the immediate family. “My father loved horses and he had some friends who were trainers of American Saddle Horses so he introduced my sister and I to them when I was about 7 years old. I rode for 3 years and then my father passed away when I was 10. I continued riding for another few years but lost interest as my father was really the one who encouraged us to

ride and compete and my mother was left to raise two little girls on her own. It was very tough for her as a working single Mom and she was still expected to take us all across the country to compete.” Monique then met her future husband who was playing polo and polocrosse and he got her into the saddle again and introduced her to Polocrosse. “I just fell in love with it – and him - and am still competing in Polocrosse today. Louw is a member at Val De Vie Polo Club and he plays polo almost every weekend.” Louw also started young. He was introduced to horses at a very young age as his Mom had a passion for horses and owned a little riding school on their farm. “I think my husband is one of the most natural horsemen I have ever met and he just has an unbelievable seat and professional style,” says the proud Gimmie. Adding to the family depth of equine strength is Monique’s brother-in-law Dr George Schabort, who is a Veterinary Surgeon at

Wellington Veterinary Clinic. “George treats most of the horses on our farm. We chiefly use Wellington Veterinary Clinic and Baker McVeigh as our main vets. It sure helps a lot having a vet in the family and he only lives a short distance from the farm which is very convenient in the case of emergencies!” Her horse dentist husband has been working in Japan for the last 3 years. “Louw was six weeks on and six weeks off. He worked for a leading Australian there but decided to give up Japan and stay in SA as our new business has grown quite a bit and he does all the breaking - in of the young horses so he is needed at home. He does a lot of horse dentistry in SA still, including with Gary Waters - so that keeps him busy when he is not breaking in horses!” Monique is keen to meet more racing and breeding people and has space available for horses. Her email address is moniqueschabort@gmail.com See the CTS Ready To Run Sale Preview on page 17.

Paarl Diamant’s Big 4 – Ready To Fly Monique says there is likely to be value in all four of their quartet at next week’s CTS Ready To Run Sale. ‘’They have been broken in and breezed and look promising,” she says. Lot 34 is Salvadora, a beautiful big filly by Oratorio from Viva La Belle, who is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Lady Of The Turf from the immediate family of King Of Pain. A strong frame and solid. A very good mover. Lot 49 is Fort Royal, by Elusive Fort from Among Royalty, by Among Men. Her dam is a half-sister to the exported Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning, as well as stakes winners Surabi and Romany Prince. She has a 100% record at stud. Beautifully topped filly, nice hindquarters and good rein. Lot 59 is a VAR colt named Sniper Fire and he’s said to be very solid and strong. “He’s probably my favourite of the four,” said Schabort of Sniper Fire, whose dam First Burst is a half-sister to stakes winner Winter Burst. He’s related to several other black-type runners including Quick As Lizard and Burst. Solidly built, strong frame good depth of girth. Lovely mover with a good temperament. From the prolific Gr1 winning Burst family Lot 72 is Elusive Force, a daughter of Elusive Fort, whose fillies are always in demand. Monique commented: “She’s quite a strong-willed dark bay filly, but actually very tame. She’s all calm once the saddle is on and looks a racy type. Classy and tall with a nice shoulder and rein and good hindquarters. Very good mover. Staying type and a well-related filly.”

Normandy Stud Is Ready To Run for 2018 Oscar Foulkes Talks Us Through Their Draft Normandy Stud has been a strong supporter of the Ready To Run concept since its inception. With Oscar Foulkes being a strong proponent of Maine Chance Farms' resident sire, Querari since his first crop hit our tracks, these two aspects have come together neatly in their draft for the forthcoming 2018 Cape Thoroughbred Sales Ready To Run Sale.

History shows you don’t have to spend big to win big!

A quality catalogue for the 2018 CTS Ready To Run Sale gives every hope that there is plenty of reason for the bullish positivity to continue at Durbanville on 23 November.

The 2000 Cape Guineas winner Captain Al is in reach of achieving a milestone no other South African bred sire has ever accomplished.

he former Champion Sire and Eight Times Champion Sire of 2YO’s has a total of 90 stakes winners, which means he needs just ten more black type winners to become the first locally bred stallion to achieve 100 stakes winners. Other top locally sires, such as Dynasty (60 stakes winners), Jet Master (75) and Elevation (approximately 40 stakes winners) are some way behind Captain Al’s tally, although it is difficult to assess past stud records of such sires as Dignitary, with data less than complete for South African bred stallions in earlier eras. While Captain Al died in 2017, he may well still have the ammunition to achieve this feat. The late stallion has a good number of runners yet to represent him and past statistics suggest that it is possible to crack 100 black type winners before his crops run out. In his past four crops (including current 3yo’s) Captain Al has averaged nine stakes winners, and some well-bred youngsters are yet to make their racecourse appearance. His current crop of 3yo’s include five stakes horses, notably the unbeaten One World, and Golden Slipper winner, Celtic Sea, as well as potential black type winners Canukeepitsecret, Juniper Spring, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Well Related Captain Al has an exceptionally well bred crop of 2yo’s due to represent him this season, with his juveniles in 2018-2019 including half-siblings to Gr1 winners Via Africa, Just Sensual, and Princess Victoria (by Al Mufti’s son, Victory Moon). Captain Al’s juveniles this season also include youngsters out of the graded stakes winners, Gibraltar Blue, Secret Of Victoria (dam of 3 top fillies by Captain Al), Sidera, and Equus Champion/ Triple Tiara winner, Cherry On The Top. Remarkably, Captain Al could be poised for another record. Should a son or daughter of the sire capture

Bold Silvano Stands for a fee of R12 000

this year’s Cape Guineas, it would be a third year running that his progeny have won arguably South Africa’s premier event for 3yo’s. His sons, William Longsword and Tap O’ Noth, landed the Guineas in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Dynasty Closest active sire with a record set to equal that of Captain Al in a major Cape classic is Dynasty, whose sons have won three of the past five runnings of the Cape Derby. With his unbeaten son, One World, among the leading Guineas fancies, it is quite possible that Captain Al will achieve this remarkable feat. In fact he is sure to be well represented in the majority of the Cape Summer feature races, and he has two 3yo’s entered for the upcoming Gr2 Concorde Cup - he also has three entered for the Gr2 Cape Merchants on the same day. The late bay could also make waves as a sire of sires in 2018-2019 with his Equus Champion son, Captain Of All, due to be represented by his first runners this season. One of the best sprinters seen on the South African turf over the past two decades, Captain Of All represents an increasingly rare outcross to both Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector. Well supported early on at stud, the former Equus Champion has some well-bred sorts in his first crop, including a half-sister to high class runners Rikitikitana and Rockin Russian, a colt out of Fillies Guineas winner, Go Indigo, a ¾ brother to Equus Champion, Always In Charge, and a three-parts sister to Captain Al sired Irridescence Stakes winner, Pure Power. It will be interesting to see if Captain Of All fares as well as his sire when mated to mares from the Sadler’s Wells male line- Captain Al enjoyed tremendous success with Sadler’s Wells’ son, Fort Wood, with that cross producing, among others, the Gr1 winners Captain America and William Longsword.

Roberto Captain Al was sired by Al Mufti, whose Epsom Derby winning sire, Roberto, continues to make his presence felt through his male line

Captain Al winning the Gr1 Cape Guineas descendants all around the world even if the Roberto male line is by no means as potent as it once was. The 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, Blame, (whose sire, Arch, is a grandson of Roberto) has enjoyed a stellar year in 2018, with his 13 stakes winners this year headed by the Gr1 winners, Fault and Marley’s Freedom, while his own sire is broodmare sire of boom US stallion, Uncle Mo. The Roberto male line also

continues to enjoy success in Australasia, largely thanks to a number of sire sons of the late Roberto stallion, Red Ransom. The latter’s son, Domesday, is responsible for 2018 Victoria Derby winner, Extra Brut, and this year’s Gr1 Coolmore Classic winner, Dayses Doom, while fellow Red Ransom son, All American, is responsible for 2018 Queensland Derby winner, Dark Dream. Red Ransom is also broodmare

sire of Dewhurst Stakes winner War Command (War Front), who features among the Leading First Crop Sires in the UK this season. The Coolmore Stud based War Command is bred on the same War Front/Red Ransom cross as 2018 Australian Gr1 winner, Homesman. Another Roberto horse, Silver Hawk, is broodmare sire of multiple Gr1 winner, Nathaniel, the sire of, among others, Champion and dual Arc de Triomphe winner, Enable.

Time Thief Daughter Goes Close

S

There’s not enough money at Royal Ascot so future plans are fluid for Saturday’s A$1 million Gr1 VRC Sprint Classic winner Santa Ana Lane.

o says trainer Anthony Freedman after his son of Lope De Vega won his third Gr1 sprint in the space of just six months, and his fourth overall, to lay claims to being Australia’s top sprinter. The favourite Redzel was heavily backed before the jump but was struggling a long way from home at Flemington before battling on for fifth. In the end, Cape Thoroughbred Sales will be all smiles as it was left to Cape-based stallion Time Thief ’s Gr1 Galaxy winning daughter In Her Time to take the Anthony Freedman 6yo to a neck at the line. A timeous prompter for the sire whose SA crop are being offered this year. The Nadeson Park-based

Time Thief, a 3/4 brother to SA Champion Sprinter Laisserfaire, in whose honour, coincidentally, the Kenilworth Sunday feature is being run, is a multiple Gr1 placed son of Redoute’s Choice. He has four lots on the CTS Ready To Run Sale on Friday 23 November. The late blooming Santa Ana Lane produced his trademark devastating final burst under Mark Zahra to leave Australia’s top speed machines, including dual The Everest winner Redzel, in his wake and it was a very commendable showing from In Her Time who led late in proceedings. On the line, Santa Ana Lane had a neck advantage over In Her Time, with a length-and-a-half to deadheaters Jungle Cat and Pierata. Winning trainer Anthony

Powerful Flood Vaal 6 November

Four of the nine races on the inside track on Tuesday were run over 1700m and stopping the clock in the fastest of these was DARKEST HOUR in the MR68 Handicap. Racing off a mark some 24 points below that of his earlier best here, the Await The Dawn colt raced 10th of the twelve in the first half of the race. Once given rein though he quickened best of all, and despite not finding the clearest of passages, he got up 80m from home to win going away. The assessment plate was by far the faster of the two 1200m events and here we saw an impressive performance from the lightly raced son of Pathfork MR FLOOD. Now a winner of three from five, Lucky Houdalakis’ charge flew out of the pens and was very quickly two lengths clear. He kept up a healthy gallop throughout and only having to be pushed out, he won without any anxious moments.

Run in a time over 4 seconds quicker than the MR83 Handicap, the MR74 affair won by EXCALIBUR’S RETURN was the faster of the two 2000m races. Very well handicapped on her win in an assessment plate last time out, Mike De Kock’s charge was soon positioned close to the speed. She assumed command 300m out and kept on strongly late to beat the running on favourite REDBERRY WOOD by a length and a half. TITBITS At the head of affairs throughout, SWEET RED opened up to lead by six going through the 400m and with some in hand, she went on to score by eleven. After not finding the clearest of passages when the race began in earnest, CARBON ATOM quickened nicely late on when winning the false paced MR80 Handicap over 1200m.

Smart Duo

Fairview 7 November As was the case with the previous meeting, the poly track was running slow on Wednesday. Three of the afternoon’s eight races were staged over 1900m and by far the fastest of these was the bill topping MR86 Handicap won by FREE AGENT. One of three runners in the six horse field from the stable of Tara Laing, the 6/1 shot raced fifth for most of the journey. He quickened best of all when the race developed into a sprint early in the short home straight and got up 50m from home to deny his stable companion (also 6/1) IT IS WRITTEN. Race six on the card was a graduation plate over 1000m and here two former KZN campaigners, VIA SACRA and LIGHT ON HER TOES made their local debuts. Via Sacra now with Alan Greeff was the best handicapped horse in the field and she did indeed land the spoils. Sent off a strong favourite in what proved to be the faster of the two 1000m events on the card, the daughter of Pathfork was soon up handy. She was ridden to lead 150m out and eased down before the line won very cosily by two and three quarters. In terms of distance the easiest victory on the card was recorded by HIGH DEFINITION in the faster of the two 1300m handicaps, the MR71 affair. Taken straight to the front by Ryan Munger, the Trippi gelding led throughout. He raced two lengths clear for most of the journey before kicking away to score by four over the final 400m. TITBITS

Vaal 8 November A maiden plate for the girls over 1200m got proceedings underway on the inside track on Thursday and here we saw a smart performance from the Visionaire filly BLONDE VISION. Making her second racecourse appearance here, Mike De Kock’s charge was soon up handy. She was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 300m marker and won going away from the well supported HARTLEYFIVE by three. This was comfortably the fastest of the three 1200m maiden plates on the card. They also ran three races over 1600m and quickest home amongst these was WINE FESTIVAL in the MR74 Handicap. There was no pace on in the early part of the race and although Joey Ramsden’s charge raced in the rear, the field was always very tightly bunched. She ran on best of all when the race developed into a sprint 400m out and under a well-judged ride from S’manga Khumalo, she got up late to deny the always handy PALE LILAC. The easiest victory on the card was recorded by PROTEA PARADISE in the maiden plate over 1600m. Always handy, the son of Dynasty put his head in front 450m out and went on to score with a ton in hand by three and three quarters. TITBITS

Making her local debut here, WHO KNOWS won the opening maiden plate for the girls over 1000m going away.

On The Right Trail

Well weighted WONDEROUS CLIMBER ran on well from the rear when winning the MR66 Handicap over 2200m with some in hand.

Fairview 9 November In terms of prize money the pinnacle stakes over 1600m topped the bill in Port Elizabeth on Friday and here victory went to the top weighted runner AFRIKABURN. Usually one to run on stoutly from off the pace, Tara Laing’s charge adopted a change of tactics here and raced from the front. He kept on determinedly in the straight and won well by a length and a quarter from the running on GO DIRECT. Racing for the first time since March, the runner up raced detached at the rear early on and finished strongly. Another to win well from the front on this card was KLEVER KATHY when landing the faster of the two 1400m events, the Guineas Plate. Sent off third in the betting market at 4/1, this gutsy daughter of Bold Silvano found extra at the business end of the

race and did have the favourite MARCH MUSIC held at the wire. Three of the afternoon’s eight races were run over 1200m and not surprisingly the fastest of these was the MR89 Handicap in which COPPER TRAIL registered his fourth career victory. Soon up handy, the well related son of Sail From Seattle raced prominent throughout. He put his head in front going through the 400m and won well by a length and a quarter from his running on stable companion FLIGHT CAPTAIN. TITBITS Always handy, THREE TIMES A LADY won the MR58 Handicap over 1800m with authority going away.

Enjoying The Poly Greyville 9 November NEGMA was by far the best in at the weights in the opening maiden plate over 1100m on Friday evening and the daughter of Dynasty won accordingly. Taken straight to the front by Anton Marcus, Brett Crawford’s charge led throughout. She was always in command and drew clear comfortably when given rein 300m out to score by four. The only distance on the eight race program to stage more than one race was 1400m where the faster of the two was the MR76 Handicap won by another former Cape Town campaigner in MISS SMARTY PANTS. Always handy, Dean Kannemeyer’s charge quickened nicely when the race developed into a sprint early in the straight and won well by a length and a half from the running on RAES’ DYNA JET. Another to win well on this card was OVATION AWARD in the Graduation Handicap over 1800m. Always handy, the 3yo son of Stagelight was ridden to lead early in the straight by Warren Kennedy and after quickly scooting clear he went on to score by three and a half from the favourite SUBTROPICAL. TITBITS With the rest well beaten, CHANTYMAN found Horses worth following at their next few starts... extra late when getting the better of ISNANA in the closing stages of the MR80 Handicap over 1000m.

PUNTER STRIKES IT INCREDIBLY LUCKY ON SOCCER BET

A 40-year-old father of two from Thohoyandou felt like the luckiest man alive when he won R2 802 062.53 off just R1! He was overwhelmed by this enormous win and is thankful to Hollywoodbets. His win came just at the right time because he is currently training to become an electrician so he isn’t able to work full-time, and his family has always struggled financially. The new millionaire plans to build a house for his mother as well as investing some of the money. He has been betting with Hollywoodbets Mobile since 2016 and is pleased with the company’s fast and top-class service.
