Rivarine - ignore last run and can register the Lebelo double
Gr3 LEBELO SPRINT at Turffontein this Saturday
Time To Call The Last Round!
M
With the shadows lengthening on an action-packed 2018, the R250 000 Gr3 Lebelo Sprint enjoys the distinction of being the final feature event of the year. The 1000m handicap has, not unexpectedly, attracted a field of lowflyers of all shapes and sizes.
ike and Adam Azzie hold a strategic hand in the race with their coupling of Var’s past winner Rivarine and the super-quick Judpot colt, Down To Zero. Rivarine, whose topclass Mum River Jetez won the 2010 J&B Met, has been imbued with much of his sire’s speed and has held his own in the top reaches of competition without eve really stamping his authority with consistency. A winner of this race in 2016, he ran another good race in the 2017 renewal when just 1,50 lengths off Mike de Kock’s Alfolk. After his very eyecatching Golden Loom Handicap victory over Saturday’s course and distance, he was quietly fancied to win the Merchants on Summer Cup day but after showing some toe he fell away to finish closer to last and over 9 lengths off the winner, Africa Rising. In Rivarine’s defence he was reportedly fatigued after that race and will have been freshened up for Saturday. He certainly has the ability to win. Piere Strydom takes the ride on his stablemate Down To Zero, a speedy Judpot colt who showed plenty of toe in the Merchants and was not disgraced when sixth and
3 lengths off the winner. Strydom knows him well and is the master of the conservative ride on the pace. He must go into quartet calculations. Paul Matchett’s fast filly Kissable comes in with a handy 52,5kgs and has maintained her formline well. She is 2kgs better off with Rivarine on their Golden Loom meeting where she ran 2,20 lengths off the Azzie gelding. Roy Magner’s 7yo Isphan has his 66th run on Saturday and has been round the block a few times. The son of Tiger Ridge has not been far off the action since returning from a stint in the Eastern Cape – no doubt to escape the feature season here earlier in the year. A course and distance winner, he is another who has the capacity to run into the money. Louis Goosen Captain’s Girl travels the long road from Ashburton and is holding her form well. She chased Rivarine home in the Golden Loom and now meets the Azzie charge on a half kilo better terms for a half length beating. She wouldn’t have returned to Turffontein if her vastly experienced trainer didn’t believe she could turn the tables. Paul Peter’s Rebel’s Champ lumbers top weight and is one of the better Rebel King progeny around
with 7 wins from his 19 starts. The 4yo is in a rich vein of form, having won 3 of his last 4 starts. He should be right on top of Rivarine on the Golden Loom collateral and can very definitely contest the finish. Pure Blonde has been battling to regain his better for after winning last on 23 December last year. The son of Kahal should not be far off the action again and jockey Randall Simons is riding the crest of a wave. Clever Guy seldom runs a bad race and caught the eye when running into the money in the Merchants on Summer Cup day behind Africa Rising. The son of Argonaut will be running at them late again and must have a shout on his best form. Former champion sprinter Talktothestars is a shadow of his former self but has tumbled from a career peak rating of 121 down to a substantially more humble 89. He has been tried over further recently without too much spark and is difficult to fancy on recent form. Wrecking Ball always shows plenty of speed but has not won in close on a year and failed to flatter when beaten over 7 lengths in the Magnolia on Summer Cup day. He may need to improve a little bit. Donny G will certainly strip fit after a busy campaign recently. He won three on the trot but was then outgunned on Summer Cup day when well beaten in the Merchants. There should not be too much between him and Rebel’s Champ on the weight turnaround after his last run. Prince Of Kahal is probably better over marginally further than this but is in fine form, having won 3 of his
last 4 starts with some authority. He was beaten 3,70 lengths by Rivarine in the Golden Loom and is a kilo worse off. If they don’t run him off his feet, he can find a cheque. Great Shaka is the third of the Maroun trio and takes something of a step up in class after beating Copper Jay going away in an MR 86 Handicap over the course and distance last time out. This quick gelding gave Gr2 winner Purple Diamond 2,5kgs and ran him to a head over the course and distance at his penultimate start. With just 52kgs to lump, he may just think he is running without a jockey and could be dangerous if he gets away from them.
We are leaning towards Rivarine to come back to himself and put his best foot forward and hold off Kissable and Down To Zero. But it’s not straightforward so go wide in the Pick 6. Have a wonderful 2019!

If The Shoe Fits...
An interesting runner in Saturday’s Lebelo Sprint, Coenie de Beer’s 2015/16 Equus Champion Sprinter Talktothestars has his 55th start. The gutsy Scott Bros bred ten-time winner has earned over R2 million in a distinguished career and caught the public attention when winning the 2016 Gr1 Tsogo Sun Sprint unshod at Scottsville under Piere Strydom. He carries only 52kgs in Saturday’s feature, with his merit rating having tumbled from a career high mark of 121 down to 89. His vastly experienced trainer Coenie De Beer, who races the son of Overlord in shoes these days, is on record making some interesting observations about equine footwear. “There shouldn’t be such a fuss about a horse racing without shoes. Traditionally this is how they raced, unshod or at times with steel shoes. In the days before shoe declarations I’d say the majority of trainers raced their runners in steel shoes, then someone came up with a rah-rah around alumites and it changed people’s perceptions. There are racing fans who believe horses are only capable of winning when they are declared to race with alumites. That’s nonsense, they can also win in steels or without shoes altogether. Trainers have exploited this situation at times, but for me it’s about getting a horse fit and ready to win. I don’t consider shoes a factor.”

Aldo Is A Okay! Captain Eyes The R5 Million! After a health scare the previous week, ruling Cape champion jockey Aldo Domeyer was in fine form at a sundrenched Kenilworth last Wednesday, booting home four winners, including a hat-trick of winners for his boss, Candice Bass-Robinson.

Trainer Vaughan Marshall has confirmed that his star 3yo One World will run in the R5 million CTS 1600 on Sun Met day.
he son of Captain Al ran a very creditable third when beaten 1,75 lengths by Mike de Kock’s now dual Gr1 winning Aussie import Soqrat and Cape Classic winner Twist Of Fate in last Saturday’s Gr1 Cape Guineas. Winner of the Listed Langerman last term, and more
recently the Gr2 Concorde Cup, this third placing was One World’s first defeat in six starts. Initially thought to be a surprising omission from the illustrious L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate entry of eleven received last Tuesday, Milnerton-based Vaughan Marshall told the Sporting Post that the intention had never been to run the Klawervlei bred athlete in the
prestigious weight-for-age mile. One World is out of the UK placed Aquilonia (Giant’s Causeway) and cost R425 000 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale. The CTS 1600 is restricted to eligible graduates of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale held on 21 and 22 January 2017, the CTS March Yearling Sale held on 18 and 19 March 2017 and the Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale held on 21 April 2017. Entries close at 11h00 on Wednesday 2 January.
Very Impressive! Sun Met
D
omeyer was subjected to rigorous medical tests after suffering headaches and what was initially thought to be a lot more serious was eventually narrowed down to sinus issues. And the local star bounced back in style after a blank Guineas day to takes his season tally to 38 at a strike rate of 18%. Eighteen of his winners have been for the Bass-Robinson team. First of Aldo’s winners was the unraced Pathfork filly Miss Honey who proved too speedy for her five rivals in the 1000m Maiden Juvenile Plate. The Highlands bred galloper, a R90 000 March Yearling Sale graduate for owner Brian Riley, skipped away to beat Duke Of Marmalade daughter Duchessofcornwall by 2,25 lengths, with the Snaith favourite Cyber Blossom finding her best hoof late for third. Pathfork has three lots on next month’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale. The Klawervlei Stud bred Window To Africa gave Aldo his next winner, when the R2,2 million Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate went all the way to win the third, a Maiden Plate for the fairer sex over 1000m.
This well-bred chestnut is out of the Rock Of Gibraltar Guineas winner Gibraltar Blue and was turned out in fine fettle as Andre Nel’s Rondeberg gallopers always are. Ridgemont Highlands stallion Canford Cliffs has proven an exciting addition to the Cape stallion roster and his Australian-bred son Meraki maintained his good improvement to register a third win from 16 starts for Domeyer and Bass-Robinson in the MR 80 Handicap over 1400m. An A$60 000 2016 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale graduate off the Blue Gum draft, Meraki was purchased by Heritage Bloodstock and is out of the wellrelated Bel Espirt mare Aerate’s Joy. The rampant partnership rounded off a happy day when their R3,6 million Var filly Varsity Lover showed that her Western Cape Fillies Championship performance around the turn came too early and was all wrong when reverting back to the 1000m. The Lammerskraal owned galloper produced a good performance to make it two wins from three starts. She is out of the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas champion Captain’s Lover. She should pay to follow!
Eagle Powered For A Royal 4! The first major racing event of 2019 is the running of the 158th Queen’s Plate and third year of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Racing Festival, which takes place on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 January 2019.
T
he final field will be declared on Thursday 27 December. Recent Gr2 Green Point Stakes winner Legal Eagle will be bidding to match the irrepressible Pocket Power who won this prestigious mile four times for Mike Bass in the first decade of this century. The three horses who finished within a neck of the champion in
the Green Point Stakes are among the entries. Mike de Kock is expected to run Soqrat and emerging hope, Buffalo Bill Cody. He said: “The Queen’s Plate really is the race it’s hyped up to be, all the very best milers are going be in there. The race will show us where we stand. It will be a contest of truly top horses and it certainly is something to look forward to.”
Ridgemont Highlands’ young stallion Jackson has been enjoying a good run of success of late, and the triple Gr1 winning son of Dynasty was at it again at the Vaal on Thursday.
J
ackson’s first crop daughter Scent Of Evening made a smart debut when scoring first time out for trainer Lucky Houdalakis and jockey Craig Zackey. Bred by Highlands, the 3yo filly stayed on to shed her maiden by a neck when victorious over 1200 metres. Scent Of Evening was a R275 000 buy from the 2017 Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale. She is the second winner in two days for her in-form sire Jackson, whose daughter Heaven’s Embrace won her second race, from just three starts, when scoring over 1600m at Kenilworth yesterday. Triple Gr1 winner Jackson, who thrashed dual Horse Of The Year Variety Club and promising young sire Potala Palace when landing the 2012 Gr1 Investec Cape Derby, is from one of the very best families in the stud book, with his
immediate relatives including dual US champion sire Smart Strike and the successful stallions Sky Classic, Strike Smartly and Sail From Seattle. The son of Dynasty ended the 2017-2018 season as South Africa’s fourth Leading First Crop Sire by winners and he looks on track for an even better year this season.

The final chance to have a runner in the R5 million Gr1 Sun Met to be run on 26 January closes at 11h00 on 7 January. The big race weights will be published on Monday 7 January and final declarations are due at 11h00 on Monday 14 January. There are 29 entered so far and one very likely candidate is recent Gr2 Premier Trophy winner, Head Honcho. His trainer Andre Nel is on record saying that he was annoyed that his charge couldn’t get into the 2018 Vodacom Durban July after his Listed Sledgehammer win. But he is likely to make the Met cut and Nel says that Keagan de Melo will retain the ride.
Winx Set For 2019 Australian wonder mare Winx is set to race on in 2019.
T
rainer Chris Waller released a statement that revealed an agreement had been reached between connections that the sevenyear-old would be prepared for one more racing campaign following a recent discussion. "She has nothing left to prove to us or her many followers and we are under no illusion that she is getting a little older, however, she is in excellent condition both physically and mentally and had she not pleased us in any area of her wellbeing or mental state she would have been retired immediately," Waller said. "This is not to say that it may not happen before her first run of the preparation, after her first run or at
any stage where we are not happy with any aspect of her training or physical state. "We will not commit to any races as yet but it would be logical to follow the path we have previously, commencing in the Apollo Stakes at Royal Randwick in February and if she did manage to get through a four-race preparation it would most likely culminate in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick. "I must stress to everyone that it shouldn't be assumed she will be there, it will be a race-byrace assessment as it has always been, especially over the past two seasons when deciding whether to go towards a third Cox Plate, a second Queen Elizabeth or even a
fourth Cox Plate as it was in her last start. "Each race is important for its own reason and we fully appreciate all of the support that she has had throughout her career." Waller said it was unlikely Winx would travel outside Australia. "There will be many questions from different sectors relating to racing in other jurisdictions, which, in itself, could include numerous options," he added. "However, we have and will continue to keep things simple with Winx and I believe that has been a big part of her longevity as well as something we are very proud of.”

Phumelela’s recently appointed Sports Betting Executive Rob Scott says his move from horseracing’s shop window to the engine room of the game poses some of the greatest but also most exciting challenges he has faced in his thirty years on the retail interface.
o question, it's one of the biggest jobs in SA horsearcing. “I don’t believe a bull in a china shop mentality is the way to go. I have been behind Vee Moodley’s desk for a matter of weeks now and, while I have been on the Phumelela Executive team for some time and understand many of the dynamics and issues facing betting, I don’t want to be implementing and changing processes merely for the sake of impact. Let’s not forget that Vee was a vastly experienced hands on manager who intimately understood the various aspects of the betting machine. I want to try and bring a fresh new perspective – but only to add more genuine value,” says the 47 year old Bloemfontein - born MBA graduate and lifetime clothing retailer who has horseracing running in his blood. He hails from a well respected South African racing family, with both his late brother and uncle respected trainers while his father, Tony, was a steward. Rob’s black and white silks have graced the winner’s enclosure in both KZN and Gauteng for many years, even though not as prominent these days as they were in years past. After six years on the Racing Association Board, his appointment at Phumelela presented a potential conflict of interest and he resigned from the owner body board earlier this month. “It was a privilege to serve on the board of the RA and I was fortunate to work with some of the most passionate people in the racing industry. But due to my new position in Phumelela, I will not be able to wear both hats. I know the RA will go from strength to strength and I wish the incumbent Board Members all the best,” he said on his resignation. Before his appointment as CEO of Tellytrack, Rob worked in various senior management positions for the now beleaguered Edcon for more than two decades. “Clothing retail management entailed long hard hours and extensive travel. I was ready for a change and we did well out of it. The business itself was doing well but in a tough and competitive market, you
can become the victim of strategic decisions that don’t pan out. We have seen many examples of it here and abroad. I’m sad to see what is happening at Edcon today and I hope that the recapitalisation efforts work. It is an old established family brand that has been on the SA retail landscape for much of our lifetimes.” As a result of an employment constraint, he was unable to apply for a permanent position and took up a contract for a year to head Tellytrack. “I loved it. The dynamic environment, the people. The fast-paced horseracing vibe around me.
I was in my element. I was then tasked with turning the Publishing Department around and making it profitable. It’s a work in progress – and we are making strides to improving the product.” ‘Happily divorced’ in his own words, Rob is proud of his three daughters Keelan, Erin and Sinead. The Johnny Walker Black drinker, Tottenham Hotspur supporter and all-round football fanatic, whose closest associates affectionately label ‘Fat Boy’, was educated at CBC in Bloemfontein and Queens High in Gauteng. His infatuation with horseracing began at an early age. His Dad was heavily involved with all aspects of racing from training to breeding in the Free State. His late uncle George was the leading trainer in Bloemfontein and another Uncle Trevor was an avid punter and owner. His late brother Colin was later to train in KZN for many years. Rob recalls a ‘lifechanging’ visit to Highdown Stud by Trevor Lange and his Dad to look at a few horses for Colin and Lucky Houdalakis that was to change the course of his life – mostly for the best! “I ended up buying twelve horses
and the rest I guess is history,” he says with a broad smile. A keen punter, his earliest memory of a betting coup was on his own horse, the talented Dynasty gelding Sage Throne, who he had acquired off the Graham Beck Dispersal Sale, and who he backed in from 25-1 to win his maiden. “We were brave then! Today I am a lot more pragmatic and sensible! I enjoy a bet naturally but find that my work keeps me so involved that I often miss actually sitting down and studying form.” While he is still finding his feet in his new office, he says that the success of the Summer Cup day earlier this month was a good example of what could be achieved with a professional approach to the marketing. But we suggest that bums on seats and fashion don’t necessarily equate to the all important driver of improved betting turnovers. “Last year you may recall that the Cup was rain delayed to the Sunday. We were 15% up year-on-year on that day and 8% up on 2016 – which is a more realistic measure as Sundays don’t work as well for feature days. So we can’t complain about that. But market research tells us that casual
visitors on the big day often live under the misconception that one needs information and major knowledge and skill to have a bet. That may be true for the seasoned punter but we need to take the fear out of that experience and we have an exciting betting concept that we hope to introduce on Sun Met day.” He also adds that the overall experience on the big day needs to cater for the regular punter and the visitor. That is in terms of the desired facilities, the comfort and the overall appeal. “Regulars don’t necessarily want music playing over their commentary. They want to see what they are used to. We need to embrace our regulars and casual punters and accommodate them all. I like what I see the way Gold Circle do things on July Day with the tote operators and we are looking at improving the raceday experience and giving the customer what they want.” An early priority is also the establishment of a loyalty programme to reward punters and efforts to build trust and loyalty in the tote. “The model is a simple one. There is no skulduggery on the tote. The takeout is laid down and the more favourites win and the more punters that collect, the happier we are. But
items like carryovers may require a higher profile of communication and transparency. There is nothing to hide. But we need to apply our minds to ensure the customer knows and understands what’s going on. We can run them over peak periods advised well in advance from the 25th to the 7th. A carryover is the punter’s money, after all!” He went on to add that a structured incentivisation programme is also very important. “Ironically, market research tells us that punters are very brand loyal – despite the whinging and moaning! Look, that may well be because of convenience factors – like, for example, being used to people and systems. But we need to reward support. We want to implement it from the high-rollers down to the man in the tote who spends his R6. Our recent in-store activations to our core market – our lifeblood, the small punter – worked well. A cap, a voucher, a small gift. People appreciate it and we can see it talking in the stats,”he adds. Rob concedes that staff attitudes and knowledge have to be improved. “Upskilling our staff is another massive priority. We absolutely have to have the right people in the right jobs at all levels. It’s no good having a nice outlet and exciting racing and the staff are not warm and friendly. We need to learn to listen to our customers and treat them like we value them. Just like owners, without the punter we have no business.” The long-running and costly Bookmakers dispute around the open bet is another high priority item in the Scott 2019 diary. “I am determined to lay this saga to rest as soon as possible. We have a few good ideas to bring bookmakers to the table on a basis of reciprocal benefit. When we argue, racing is the loser in the long run and I hope that we can sit down, bury the personal animosity – if that even exists - and reach an agreement where we can protect his business and remunerate the bookmaker at a competitive level to place the bet through the tote.” He closed by saying that he felt that the industry could be in for a watershed year in 2019. “We live in trying but exciting times. There were massive changes in many sectors this year. New people bring new hope and new ideas. I hope that we can all work together and give everybody a chance to have his or her say in making this game great again. Talk to me. Hold me accountable. I am happy to meet and chat with anybody if racing can benefit. Thanks to the Sporting Post for what you guys do. We don’t always agree – but that’s not important! Here’s hoping that we all have a great 2019.”

It was a year of great achievements on the track and turmoil and change in the boardrooms. But most of all, bright new hope for bigger and better things in the sales ring and beyond in 2019. Here are some of the random memories…
FEBRUARY – FAB PHIL
Philanthropist's smart son Singapore Sling scores a smart win in the HK$10 million Hong Kong Classic Cup run over 1800m at Sha Tin in front of a crowd of 90 000.
APRIL – CRYING OFF
Team Valor International’s Barry Irwin pulls out of South African racing after being frustrated by the perceived lack of progress on the export protocols front. He was quoted as saying that he had tried to make heads or tails - and even tales - out of the strategies. He suggested that no matter what one heard or read, ‘progress is considerably less rosy than it has been portrayed’.
May – Dirty Harry
The curtain comes down on the Highveld Season on 5 May with the Champions Day programme and 24 hours earlier the SA Champions Season launches at Greyville. Harold Crawford’s Cape raider Perovskia pulls off a shock winning the Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes. He is subsequently sold to Mauritius.
July: Superman Rules Anton Marcus makes history with his fifth Vodacom Durban July success on Twice Over star Do It Again to register the 101st Gr1 win of his illustrious career.
October Strike
Phumelela stage the first professional race in SA history where jockeys are not permitted to use whips – or crops, as we prefer to call them. The move to ban their use in the sport is gaining momentum in the UK and it has found a lot of support in South Africa. The race is won by Mike de Kock’s Hawwaam, who goes on to win the Dingaans impressively.
November Fame
The announcement is made by Phumelela that horseracing history is set to be written on 16 January 2019 when the first superstars from the racing fraternity will be inducted into the South African Hall of Fame. This is said to be arguably the most important moment in the history of South African horseracing.
The popular Winning Ways Show hosted by Paul Lafferty and James Goodman is broadcast from brand new studios at Greyville for the first time. A real make-up artist is also present for the first time – which seems strange, as nobody looks any different seven months down the line.
June – At Last
The 2016 Sun Met winner Smart Call finally breaks the ice on her international campaign when she romps to victory under Jim Crowley in the Gr3 Stobart Energy Hoppings Fillies' Stakes over 2000m at Newcastle.
WAYNE MARKS
Drakenstein bred and owned Street Cry daughter Oh Susanna becomes the first filly in over a century to win the Gr1 Sun Met – run for the first time under weight-for-age conditions. Ridden by Grant van Niekerk she is also trainer Justin Snaith’s first winner of the race.
March – Making Up
AUGUST CHAMPIONS
Apprentice Lyle Hewitson is crowned SA Champion jockey at Equus and follows in the footsteps of Michael Roberts, who also won our national jockeys championship while still an apprentice. Roberts achieved the feat in the 1972-73 season, although he attained his full jockey’s license in June of 1973.
September In Singapore
Cape champion jockey Aldo Domeyer is crowned victor ludorum against all the odds in the inaugural PGI Jockeys Challenge in Singapore. Domeyer, Lyle Hewitson and Muzi Yeni were the rainbow warriors representing SA.
Vee For Victory On 3 December, the NHA announce the appointment of Phumelela Executive Vee Moodley as CEO of the beleaguered racing regulator. His position is taken by Rob Scott. On 11 December, Robert Bloomberg and Mark Currie are elected joint Chairmen of Kenilworth Racing in an unprecedented move to unify the North and South and to pick Cape racing up from the turf. Bloomberg is the Grandson of the late legendary Cape Turf Club Chairman Abe Bloomberg. It’s a big month all round as the Gr2 Green Point Stakes won by Legal Eagle has the racing world buzzing and Mike de Kock smashes Terrance Millard’s Gr1 winner record to make it 118 when Soqrat wins the Cape Guineas.

Exciting New Year For The Browns
H
Jockey Sherman Brown has been a hard-travelling perennial in most of South Africa’s racing centres for roughly a quarter of a century.
e has temporarily relocated to Dubai to ride for trainer Rashed Bouresly, starting the stint with two rides at last Thursday’s race meeting at Meydan. “I was tipped off by Johnny Geroudis and Mike de Kock that Mr Bouresly was looking for a jockey,” explained Brown. “He is a private trainer based an hour out of Dubai itself, and I am looking forward to the new challenge. I will be there until their season ends at the beginning of April.” Bouresly is a Kuwaiti national who wears trademark red and white-checked ghutra headgear and is well known throughout the Middle East for his passion for owning and training horses. “I travelled over with my now wife Danielle. I went there as work rider and jockey, but the stable had a lot of bad luck.” His wife is ex jockey Danielle McCreedy and they have a daughter Addison, who will be seven in January. A little-known fact about Brown is that he is a gifted handyman. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I make all my own saddles and training kit. I am designing some at the moment in Mr Bouresly’s colours – bright orange and black.” The jockey signed off in perfect style at Turffontein last Monday, with victory in his

into the build-up to the big races. Kempton's general manager Steve Parlett said: "These racegoers will be able to get up close and watch preparations for the winter festival features, which include three Grade 1 races in the King George VI and Kauto Star chases and Christmas Hurdle. "There will be no distraction for anyone in the weighing room as the window is blacked out on their side but racegoers can see in." The £100 tickets were quickly snapped up and are £25 more expensive than Premier Enclosure tickets which, if coupled with reserve seating, cost £75.
Fairer Sex Dominates
It has been a remarkable decade for fillies in horseracing all over the world. Two members of the America's Best Racing team outlined what they are most thankful for as the sun sets on 2018.
“It’s tough to have perspective in the moment, but I’m incredibly grateful as a racing fan to have been able to enjoy a remarkable run of brilliance from the fillies and mares in our sport over the last 10 years,” writes Mike Curry. “I’m only scratching the surface here but we’ve been lucky to watch stars like Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra, Goldikova, Havre de Grace, Royal Delta, Beholder, Black Caviar, Treve, Songbird, Tepin, Found, Unique Bella, and Lady Eli, and this year Winx, Enable, and Monomoy Girl. Even with two Triple Crown winners in the last four years, it has been the females that have consistently dazzled over the last decade.” Penelope Miller writes that when she thinks
South Africa is not alone it seems when it comes to balancing the stakes versus costs equation for owners. British owner Malcolm Moss has blamed poor prize-money for a decision to switch his interests to Australia.

Racing Follows Football Initiative anchester City and Tottenham have both developed a Tunnel Club hospitality area for fans to see the players arrive and line up before the match. Racing's equivalent is the weighing room, vibrant before racing with trainers and jockeys preparing for their races, and at Kempton on Wednesday 100 racegoers booked to get this view for the first time at the Sunbury course. The Kauto Star Bar is already a dedicated enclosure in the Clubhouse building that also houses annual members and hospitality boxes, but another area, adjoining the weighing room, will offer a unique insight

of the moment in racing she’s most grateful for this year, she thinks of seeing Enable become the first horse to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. “I was lucky enough to be taking photos of the race while sitting on the grass course on the first turn; Enable swung so wide into the homestretch that, for a few moments, it really looked like she might run over the top of us when she was galloping out. The best part about that was that my brain did the math and decided that being run over by Enable as she made history with an Arc-Turf double was totally worth it, so I just kept taking photos. Her win was so exciting, and I’m incredibly grateful to have been there to see history made.”
he Racing Post reports that Dashing Poet secured a first prize of £3,752 for landing the mile handicap at Southwell last Tuesday, but it may prove one of Moss’s last winners in Britain as he winds down. Moss, who has been involved in racehorse ownership for more than 40 years, said: “I’m giving up now and have sent the majority of my horses to Australia simply because the prize-money is so much better there. “We’ve got horses with Archie Alexander, Matt Cumani and Kris Lees out there. The economics make more sense to have horses out there rather than here. “I worked it out the other day that I’ve put over £1 million into British racing, and although there is the satisfaction of winning,
it does not outweigh the costs over here.” “Some racecourses could not care less about British owners, and particularly the smaller owners, any more. The smaller owners who have two or three horses are just getting knocked out of the game. It’s a really sad state of affairs.” Prize-money levels in Britain are under the spotlight after the decision by Arena Racing Company (Arc), which owns Southwell, to reduce its contribution by £3m in 2019 because of fears its media rights income will be hit by betting shop closures as a result of the government’s decision to cut FOBT stakes to £2. The cuts have been branded a ‘disgrace’ by Ralph Beckett, and fellow trainer Alan King shared his concern. - Racing Post
Jeff Rides On Into New Year
F
Champion Brisbane jockey Jeff Lloyd was meant to be retired by now but those plans have been put on hold and he could ride on to the end of the season.
or a bloke who said months ago that he was about to pull up stumps on a grand career, it would be something of a surprise to many to see him leading the Brisbane jockeys’ title. But 57 year old former South African Lloyd is a three-time Brisbane premiership winner who has won a total of 17 jockey premierships in his career which started in South Africa and has included stints in Hong Kong, Mauritius and Sydney. So what happened to his plan to retire and why has it been put on hold? Well, his teenage son Jaden is keen to become a jockey and Lloyd Senior was going to call quits on his own career to become a mentor for his son. But Lloyd says those plans are coming along slower than expected, with Jaden breaking his wrist before attempting to become an apprentice in Victoria. Jaden is still hoping to be accepted as a Victorian apprentice, and Lloyd’s younger
son Zac also wants to be a jockey. But Lloyd now says there is “no set date” for his own retirement from the saddle and says he “will ride a little longer” and possibly through next year’s Brisbane winter carnival and until the end of the season. “I was originally going to retire to help Jaden and get him ready but he broke his wrist,” Lloyd said. “He should find out whether he has been accepted (as a Victorian apprentice) in December but it might be longer than that. “We will work it out from there and depending on how things go I could fly in and fly out (to Melbourne) to help him for a while and I’ll keep riding. “I’m just going to keep enjoying riding as much as I can.” Lloyd still rides a lot for Gold Coast-based trainer Toby Edmonds although former Melbourne hoop Maloney now also commands rides for the Edmonds’ stable. www.racenet.com.au
July Mystery Positively Unsolved On Saturday 7 July, sometime after 21h30 the courier service vehicle, which was transporting the post-race equine specimens taken after every race on Vodacom Durban July day, from Greyville Racecourse, was pulled over on the N2 freeway by an unmarked white VW Golf 7. This unmarked vehicle had a flashing blue light as well as a PA system. The driver assumed that it was a police vehicle and followed their instructions to pull over. The driver was ordered to get out of the courier vehicle and told to lie down on the ground. Three plain-clothed males alighted from the unmarked white vehicle and proceeded to rob the driver of his personal effects, including his wallet and cell phone. The three men also accessed the courier vehicle and removed all the sealed boxes containing the raceday specimens. They then left, leaving the vehicle
and driver at the scene. The courier service has opened a criminal case at the Westville Police Station. On Sunday 8 July 2018 at 11h30, a woman was walking in the Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve in Glenwood, Durban, to visit family members who stayed in the vicinity. On the pathway she found the specimen boxes, which had been forced open, with the specimens still inside. She then noticed that there was information on the boxes which stated “Greyville 7/7/2018”. On her return to the area a few hours later, she saw that the boxes had disappeared.

With the major Northern Hemisphere races done and dusted for 2018, it is a good time to look at the Leading Sires for the year, which is all but a fading memory. number of stallions and their sons continue to exert considerable influence over certain countries, with a number of young sires making a big impression in 2018.
and Kingman, had a stellar year in 2018 with his black type winners headed by the Gr1 winners Eqtidaar (Commonwealth Cup), Magna Grecia (Vertem Futurity Trophy) and Royal Meeting (Criterium International).

Two stallions dominated proceedings in Europe during 2018 with Galileo and Dubawi finishing first and second on the Leading Sires in Europe List for 2018. Perennial leading sire Galileo has had runners earn in excess of €9.734 million in 2018 thus far, with his triple Gr1 winning rival Dubawi’s offspring having banked €6.842 million. Galileo and Dubawi’s dominance is clearly highlighted by the fact that between them, the pair were responsible for more than 50 stakes winners this year. Galileo’s progeny included seven Gr1 winners in 2018 (including British classic winners Forever Together and Kew Gardens), while Dubawi’s seven Gr1 winners - he also had a big race winner in Qatar - this year include brilliant 2yo’s Too Darn Hot and Quorto – two of the main classic hopes for 2019. Galileo’s half-brother, Sea The Stars, and son, Frankel, also enjoyed excellent seasons in 2018, with Sea The Stars’ progeny banking over €6.6 million this season and Frankel responsible for the winners of more than €5.5 million in 2018. Sea The Stars’ best offspring were headed by star stayer Stradivarius and Arc runner up Sea Of Class, while the unbeaten Frankel’s best included the Gr1 winners Cracksman, Call The Wind and Without Parole. Another son of Galileo, Enable’s sire Nathaniel, was fifth on the Leading Sires by Earnings list, with his runners banking over €5 million in 2018. Half brothers Invincible Spirit and Kodiac were two other stallions to enjoy big seasons in 2018, with Invincible Spirit responsible for 18 black type winners thus far, and Kodiac ending 2018 as Europe’s Leading Two Year Old Sire by both prize money and individual winners - he had 53 according to various statistics. Invincible Spirit, also sire of boom stallions I Am Invincible
Taking US earnings only, the unbeaten Gr1 Pacific Classic winner Candy Ride heads the US General Sires List for 2018. The Lane’s End sire enjoyed, yet again, a remarkable season this year with his big race winners headed by Pegasus World Cup victor Gun Runner, Gr1 Test Stakes heroine Separationofpowers, Gr1 Clark Handicap hero Leofric, and likely 2YO Champion, and 2018 Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner, Game Winner. In total, Candy Ride (whose progeny in the US banked over $17.565 million) has been represented by 16 black type winners in North America thus far, with his runners winning graded stakes on both dirt and turf this year. However, both Into Mischief (second on the log) and the deceased Scat Daddy (3rd) had more US black type winners than Candy Ride in 2018, with the pair responsible for 18 stakes winners apiece. Unbridled’s Song son Cross Traffic, whose first runners include Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Jaywalk, ends 2018 as Leading First Crop Sire, with his 16 winners including five black type winners. Triple US Champion Sire Giant’s Causeway ends 2018 as the Leading Broodmare Sire, according to BloodHorse statistics, with his daughters responsible for 19 black type winners, in the Northern Hemisphere alone, during 2018. Notable big race winners, out of Giant’s Causeway mares, included the above mentioned Gun Runner, and the graded stakes winners Sophie P, Blamed, Liora, Mucho Gusto, Liam The Charmer and King Zachary, as well as star SA 3yo One World, in 2018.
Japan The Sunday Silence sired Triple Crown winning champion

Deep Impact is well clear on the Japanese General Sires List, with his offspring have banked more than 6,798,000 000 yen in 2018 thus far. Deep Impact’s runners in 2018 have earned more than double that of former champion sire King Kamehameha, who at the time of
writing is second on the list. Four of the top five sires on the list are sons of the all conquering US Horse Of The Year Sunday Silence. Deep Impact, who is seeking a seventh Sires Title in 2018 – and seventh in a row, also enjoyed a big year internationally with his runners including 2000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior and French Derby winner Study Of Man. Deep Impact, who also tops the Leading Sire of 2YOs list in his country, was also responsible for big race winners in Japan in 2018 in the form of Wagnerian (Japan Derby), Keiai Nautique (NHK Mile Cup), Jour
Polaire (Victoria Mile), Fierement (St Leger) and Danon Fantasy (Hanshin Juvenile Fillies). The Kingmambo sired King Kamehameha is the sire of young sire sensation Lord Kanaloa Japan’s Leading Second Crop Sire of 2018 - whose first crop runners are headed by the brilliant Gr1 Japan Cup winning filly Almond Eye. Sunday Silence grandson Just A Way, who beat South African champion and promising young sire Vercingetorix when victorious in the 2014 Gr1 Dubai Duty Free, is currently the Leading First Crop Sire in Japan for 2018.

Turffontein 15 December Gauteng’s first two 2yo races of the season got proceedings underway on Saturday and stopping the clock in very marginally the fastest of these was ARAPAHO in the boy’s division of the maiden juvenile plate over 800m. Soon up handy, Paul Peter’s charge put his head in front 200m out and with the rest well beaten he got the better of his two stable companions RING OF FIRE and ASTRIX. Four of the afternoon’s ten races were staged over 1160m and quickest home in these was ALL AT ONCE when winning the assessment plate. Now a winner of two from three, Lucky Houdalakis’ charge made the useful MARDI GRAS have to work hard to beat her in a similar event last time out. She raced with the pace throughout here and kept on strongly late to hold off the very steadily gaining MIGHTY HIGH (previously unbeaten in 3 outings). They ran three of the remaining races over 1000m. The pinnacle stakes was the fastest of these and here the inform stable of Paul Peter were again on the mark when REBEL’S CHAMP registered his seventh career victory. On leaving the stalls it was KISSABLE who somewhat predictably made the running whilst the top weighted son of Rebel King raced some five lengths away in sixth. He ran on best of all from halfway and comfortably accounted for the Var mare EXQUISITE TOUCH (had raced alongside him) by a length and a half. TITBITS BASADI FAITH ran on well from off the pace when winning the girl’s division of the maiden juvenile plate over 800m going away.
Greyville 16 December Sunday’s action took place on the turf where three of the afternoon’s eight races were staged over 1200m. The pinnacle stakes was the fastest of these and here the sparingly raced 6yo TRIBAL FUSION gained his sixth win from just fifteen starts. Positioned fourth of the six after being a little slow into stride, Shane Humby’s charge was ridden to lead 220m out. He kept on strongly below the distance and won well from the ultra-consistent SIR BERNARDINI by just over a length. They also ran three races over 1400m where fastest against the clock was the improving MISS SMARTY PANTS when landing the bill topping non-black type River Indigo Handicap. Looking to complete a hattrick here, the daughter of Horse Chestnut raced prominent throughout. She ran on strongly in the short home straight and comfortably accounted for the running on ARIANOS SHADOW by two. In terms of distance the easiest victory on the card was that of FIREFOOT when getting off the mark in the maiden plate over 2000m. Always handy in a race that was run in a very slow time, the well-exposed 3yo took up the running 250m out and drew clear easily in the closing stages of the race to beat the fancied TORONTO by four. TITBITS Drawn wide and having to switch out for a run 150m from home to boot, AMBER FURST ran on well from the rear when getting up late to win the MR68 Handicap over 1200m.
Turffontein 17 December Racing returned to the old stand side track on the Day of Reconciliation where all eyes were on the highly regarded BUFFALO BILL CODY. Confidently ridden by Gavin Lerena, the 9/20 shot sat fourth for most of the journey. He put his head in front shortly after passing the 400m marker and asked to do no more than was necessary, he won very cosily by three and a quarter. Jockey Gavin Lerena rode four winners on the eight race program, the first of which being REACH FOR THE LINE in the opening maiden plate over 1600m. Another to leave the stalls deep in the red, the Potala Palace gelding was always in touch with the leaders. He was asked to take up the running 450m out and without looking flashy, he went on to score with authority by three and a half. Fairview 18 December They raced on the poly track on Tuesday where victory in the fastest of the three 2000m races, a MR70 Handicap, went to MAHIR. Nibbled at on course into 6/1 from 8’s, the son of Bold Silvano was always in touch with the leaders. He put his head in front going through the 200m and drew clear easily in the closing stages of the race to score by four and a quarter. Another to win with authority on this card was DAMARALAND in the MR72 Handicap. Soon positioned close to the speed, Alan Greeff’s charge took up the running early in the short home straight and won well from the staying on pacemaker LETS PLAY BALL by two
and three quarters. Race six on the card was a MR66 Handicap over 1200m and here we saw a very comfortable victory for the front running HIGH DEFINITION. Soon in his favourite position at the head of affairs, Yvette Bremner’s charge enjoyed a length and a half advantage throughout. He was always in command, and won by around that margin without any anxious moments. TITBITS The 4yo LOVE TALK ran on well from off the pace when getting up in the very last stride to win the MR64 Handicap over 1300m.
Highly Competitive Kenilworth 19 December Three of the eight races in Cape Town on Wednesday were staged over 1000m. The MR84 Handicap was the fastest of these and here victory went to the 4/1 second favourite VARSITY LOVER. Soon up handy, the daughter of Var raced prominent throughout. She was ridden to lead 130m from home and kept on strongly below the distance to beat the gaining OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR by 0,3 lengths. The faster of the two 1200m events was the MR74 Handicap and in a race where less than a length separated the first six home, the 3yo GREEN JACKET registered his second career victory. Positioned in the middle of a very tightly bunched field for most of the journey, Justin Snaith’s charge quickened nicely from halfway. He struck the front 200m from home and kept on determinedly in the closing stages of the race to score by a neck from the staying on pacemaker PARA HANDY. They also ran two races over 1400m where MERAKI was quickest home in the MR80 Handicap. Close up in sixth as the nine runners turned for home, the son of Canford Cliffs put his head in front 150m out and kept on strongly late to hold off the determined PRICELESS RULER (raced 3rd – led 400m) by a half. TITBITS Given a clear run in the latter stages of the MR71 Handicap over 1600m, HEAVEN’S EMBRACE would probably have won quite a bit more easily than the official winning margin of just a short head will reflect.

was also odds on. Positioned seventh of the eight during the early part of the race, Greek Fire made his move approaching the 400m pole. He struck the front 200m later and with the rest well beaten, he kept on strongly late to fend off a determined challenge from DHABYAAN by a length and a half. TITBITS PILGRIM’S PROGRESS came from the back when getting up late to win the MR80 Handicap over 2400m going away.
