Gr2 DIADEM STAKES at Kenilworth this Saturday
R
un at weight-for-age plus penalties of 2kgs for a Gr1 win and 1kg for a Gr2 success in the previous 18 months, the Diadem looks set to decide the Cape Champion Sprinter title for the season, with the highclass and vastly improved Kasimir heading the ratings. A winner of the Cape Flying Championship on Sun Met day and the Gr2 Merchants back in November, the Snaith’s 4yo son of Captain Al looks to have plenty in his favour to round off a purple patch. He appears to enjoy running down the inside rail at the Southern Suburbs track and from a 2 draw on Saturday, Richard Fourie will be able to ride him much like he
did in the Cape Flying when he sat just off the heat and pounced late. Brett Crawford’s smart Gr1 winner Bold Respect has been threatening to win again and he ran on best of the balance in the Cape Flying Championship when beaten 1,75 lengths by Kasimir. He may have a bigger say over the extra 200m. Last season’s Cape Merchants winner Silicone Valley is very effective this course and distance but has not run in 43 weeks since winning a Pinnacle over the track and trip. The others could have the edge in terms of race readiness. The talented Dutch Philip has not won in over a year and has been something of a disappointing 4yo. He was well beaten 4,75 lengths in the
Cape Flying Championship but may find the extra 200m in his favour and must have a shout at best. Ryan Munger takes the ride. Second of the Crawford runners, Search Party was beaten 2,25 lengths into third in the Cape Flying but meets Kasimir on 2kgs better terms on Saturday. That must give the 6yo a chance of earning again. Our personality of the week Sean Tarry has two solid performers carrying his flag. Chimichuri Run was well beaten in the CTS 1600 behind One World but reverts back to the sprints and Anton Marcus takes the reins. He has shown excellent ability over 1200m. His perennially dawdling stablemate Trip To Heaven was slow away in the
Cape Flying but was gaining smartly at the finish when beaten into fifth and only 2,40 lengths off Kasimir. The son of Trippi should strip at peak fitness at his third run post an injury enforced layoff, and will enjoy the breathing space of the extra 200m. Speedpoint has proven slightly inconsistent but gets a 2kg pull with Kasimir after being beaten just under 5 lengths in the Cape Flying Championship. Aldo Domeyer (traditionally Dutch Philip’s pilot) takes a rare ride for the Ramsden team. The balance look unlikely on recent form. The gallant Sergeant Hardy is well held by stablemate Kasimir and has not been at his peak for some time now. Much the same applies to Sand And
Sea, who has been abandoned by Anton Marcus in favour of Chimichuri Run, while Attenborough and the veteran Tevez would both be shock winners. Elusive Trader ran out of his skin over the course and distance in the CTS 1200 when beaten 3,50 lengths by Cirillo to earn a nice cheque in second. This looks a lot tougher. Another 3yo, Russet Air is the third of the Bass-Robinson trio. He takes a massive jump in class after dead heating in a lower division handicap on Met day. Kasimir looks all set to settle the summer speed score and he could be good enough to withstand the late challenge of the dangerous Trip To Heaven, with Bold Respect and Chimichuri Run further back.

Joey Ramsden and S’manga Khumalo hit a nice patch of form at Kenilworth last Saturday and the duo can make their presence felt with the Gimmethegreenlight filly Rose In Bloom in Saturday’s R250 000 Gr3 Prix Du Cap.
amsden won this race in 2017 with the top-class Just Sensual and he had the consistent Rose In Bloom run second last year. The 4yo has strengthened notably this term after earning something of a bridesmaid tag as a 3yo. Following fair efforts in the Sceptre Stakes and the Majorca – her only two home starts this season – the SP top rated filly looks set for a big run on Saturday.
The race is run at weight-for-age plus penalties and includes a host of the usual suspect hardknockers in the fairer sex ranks. Goodtime Gal has not won a race in 16 months but is a dangerous galloper on her day and particularly lethal over the 1400m. She faded right out in the Majorca Stakes last time but will be more competitive here. The 2018 Diana Stakes winner Love To Boogie has drawn wide and is another who comes in here off an
unplaced effort in the Majorca Stakes. The smart daughter of Trippi would have a shout if getting lucky from her wide gate. Drawn at pole position, Glen Kotzen’s Too Phat To Fly comes in here off two tough races in the Merchants and the Sceptre Stakes. The daughter of Bezrin could appreciate the trip again and must go into quartets. Miss Katalin – one of four Snaith runners - was reported not striding out in the Paddock Stakes and had some good form prior to that. She has proven effective this trip and must go into all calculations. Recent Fairview Lady’s Bracelet winner Platinum Class is the mount of Snaith stable jockey Richard Fourie and is an improving sort who could challenge at best. Dynamic Diana has pulled a wide draw
and has had a very quiet season so far. Fourth of the Snaith quartet, Red Ginger does not boast the form to threaten the top three. The 2018 Laisserfaire Stakes winner Anime has not shown a her two most recent starts in the Southern Cross Stakes and the Sceptre Stakes. The daughter of Count Dubois had form over Saturday’s trip earlier on and has a chance if she can beat her draw. Dean Kannemeyer’s lightly raced R2,5 million Trippi filly Sugar Girl comes off a 14 week break and is a difficult filly to assess. She could be a lot better than her rating suggests and could find place money. Brett Crawford saddles two runners in Shamrock Wind and Love Supreme. The latter is drawn wide and has
been slightly disappointing after starting her career with promise. Shamrock Wind should be a lot more comfortable in her own sex company again after running 9,45 lengths behind Cirillo in the CTS 1200. She is yet to win beyond the sprints but is highly regarded by her trainer and could be the dark horse. Varsity Lover ran unplaced in both the Sceptre and the CTS 1200. She steps back up in ground and has a wide draw to overcome. Steffi’s Graft steps up in class after winning two low-key sprint handicaps on the trot. She is well drawn and goes the distance – but has plenty to do off her rating. Hailing from an in-form stable, the capable Rose In Bloom should be strong enough to beat this lot and she is the selection to hold Goodtime Gal and Love To Boogie.

Heat Leads To Fairview Abandonment
T
The final race at Fairview on Friday was abandoned following a protest by the on course Veterinary Surgeon against the extreme heat.
he Sporting Post has learnt that the rare absence of wind and the stifling heat, some of it generated off the polytrack surface, had created extremely uncomfortable conditions for the horses. A runner in the seventh race died of possible circumstances related to heat exhaustion. An independent observer at the track informed the Sporting Post shortly after 15h00 that the prevailing conditions were ‘not fair’on the horses. The meeting was abandoned over an hour later. NHA Racing Executive Arnold Hyde said that the welfare of the horses were
of paramount importance and that the cooperation of all stakeholders in the decision to abandon the final event on the nine race card had been commendable. Phumelela GM Luciano Passerini said that the very high humidity and absence of any wind had combined to create the conditions. He felt that the polytrack temperatures had been higher in the past, but that the combination on Friday was extreme. It is thought that the temperature at Fairview was around 27 degrees with high humidity at the time of abandonment. It is believed that this is the first time in the history of horseracing in South Africa that extreme temperatures have contributed to a decision to abandon racing.
Gr3 TOMMY HOTSPUR HANDICAP Turffontein last Sunday
R
NHA Assurances Over Equine Flu
When the rains came and forced a move of the meeting to the twilight zone on a sleepy Turffontein Sunday, the R250 000 Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap lived up to the expectations of a curved ball result – and it came in the form of the Mike and Adam Azzie coupling’s lesser fancied Down To Zero.
escheduled from its Saturday slot to a rare Sunday evening, the weather gods finally played ball and confirmed the Phumelela decision in a tough week that saw SA racing lose four fixtures in total. The scratching of Red Chesnut Road (blood disorder) and Chantyman (Stipes permission) had the 1000m feature field reduced to 14 runners on the soft track. With the pace on from the gun, Keanan Steyn had Great Shaka bowling along out front ahead of Rocky Valley, Down To Zero and Rivarine. Prince Of Kahal moved up strongly at the 300m as Rivarine looked dangerous down the outside and Down To Zero maintained a solid pace. But riding a superbly judged race, Marco van Rensburg kept the 20-1 shot Down To Zero interested and he came forward strongly to score a hard earned 0,30 length win in a time of 57,51 secs. The consistent Prince Of Kahal stayed on
well for second and must be overdue for his sixth win as he maintains a solid form profile. The topweighted Rebel’s Champ showed no after-effects of his long Cape journey and after getting tight down the outside rail, rattled on well late in the race for third 1,80 lengths further back, with Donny G taking the quartet into another dividend zone in fourth. The 15-4 favourite Rivarine, stablemate to the winner, showed pace in his newly fitted blinkers but failed to go on with his run. He has really never enjoyed the softer ground and could do no better than fifth. The pacemaker Great Shaka faded out to seventh and 3,50 lengths off the winner. Bred by the Sorrento Stud supremo Terry Andrews, Down To Zero is a son of the very versatile Judpot (A.P.Indy) out of the one-time winner Armatrading (Var). A R220 000 2016 CTS March Yearling sale buy to the bid of trainer Mike Azzie, the winner took his earnings to R512 750 with his 4th win and 8 places from 16 starts.

Equine Influenza cases were reported from the UK on 7 February 2019 and there have been current updates.
A
ccording to the BHA’s Veterinary Committee and their team of competent Veterinarians, they confirmed that the Equine Influenza virus is the “Florida Clade 1” strain, which is endemic to North and South America. This is different from the “Clade 2” strain that is endemic to Europe. In South Africa we vaccinate utilising vaccines that mostly contain these abovementioned strains. The difference with our vaccination protocol is that we vaccinate our race horses every six months, in order to
ensure that we avoid an outbreak. Horses being imported into South Africa from these countries are tested for Equine Influenza during their 30 day quarantine period prior to departure, and thereafter, a further 30 day quarantine period after arrival in South Africa. As a precautionary measure we advise that strict biosecurity measures be applied to all persons coming into contact with thoroughbreds, especially from these affected regions. SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 22nd - SUNDAY 24th FEBRUARY 2019
The Story of Diadem a precious jewel in the crown of our sovereign breed
Gr2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes Saturday, 23 February 2019
Diadem
Who Will Wear The Crown?
T
he crack English sprint filly, Diadem was bred by Edgar Vincent, 1st Viscount D’Abernon, in 1914. By English and Irish Derby winner Orby, out of the distinguished racemare, Donnetta, the diminutive chestnut was described by her trainer, The Hon. George Lambton, (trainer to the great Lord Derby) as, “the sweetest and most gallant little mare that ever was seen on a racecourse.” Diadem has been commemorated with the Diadem Stakes at Ascot Racecourse, as well as South Africa’s prestigious sprint test.
2YO (1916)
Back to back winner, Flaming Rock, won the Diadem Stakes in 1991 and 1992
Diadem first set foot on a race track as a juvenile in 1916. However, owing to the First World War, there was very little racing that year and few opportunities to expose the filly. According to Lambton’s account in ‘Men And Horses I Have Known’, she was late in shedding her winter coat and was a shy feeder, so the decision was taken not to debut her until the 5 furlong New Coventry Stakes on 22 June 1916. Despite not looking a picture in the parade ring, she came home the winner by two lengths in a 12 horse field and would close off her 2yo tally with four wins from five starts, and when finishing third by Dansellon in the Hopeful Stakes she was conceding him 9lb., as well has having been badly interfered with at the start.
3YO (1917)
Diadem made her 3yo debut in May 1917, winning the 1000 Guineas as the 6/4 favourite, despite not being at her best. After an uncharacteristic 12th place finish in the Derby on a holding course, Diadem started favourite for the 1917 Oaks over a mile and a half, despite her trainer's misgivings. He wrote, "Personally, I did not like the idea at all, but as she never left an oat, and seemed quite contented she had to run. It never stopped raining that week, and by the Friday (Oaks Day) the course was a sea of mud, but, in spite of this, so well had she run in the Derby that she started a hot favourite. In the Dip, she and her old opponent, Sunny Jane, singled themselves out, but by this time all Diadem’s speed had gone, and nothing but her great heart enabled her to hang on. After a ding-dong struggle she was beaten half a length. I went home a miserable man, thinking to myself she would never get over these two races, and I am sure that not one filly in a million would ever have done so, but after a good rest she came out in the Autumn as good as ever." Diadem would campaign three more times that season, winning both the Great Eastern Railway Handicap and the Kennett Plate and finishing 2nd by a neck in the Queensberry Handicap.
4YO (1918)
Lightly raced at 4, Diadem had four starts, kicking off with the 6 furlong Bretby Handicap at Newmarket in May, which she won by 1.5 lengths from Roscius. She then added the Salford Borough Handicap at Manchester three
weeks later, winning by half a length, despite being assigned 10lb more than the rest of the field. In October she won the Snailwell Stakes over 5 furlongs at Newmarket, before finishing three and a half lengths third in the Champion Stakes over one and a quarter miles later that month. She was described that season as "one of the most brilliant sprinters seen in England for very many years."
5YO (1919)
At five, Diadem was campaigned 10 times for 7 wins and a second place. She won the 7 furlong Rous Memorial Stakes at Royal Ascot on 19 June and was back the very next day to win the King's Stand Stakes by two lengths over Best Born. She followed up with two more wins including a three length victory over Iron Hand in the July Cup at Newmarket, as well as the 5 furlong Molneux Plate at Liverpool by 1.5 lengths, to make it four in a row. At Goodwood she lined up in the King George Stakes, but was hampered at the start, putting paid to her chances and finishing 4th in a 4 horse field. However, she bounced right back, winning over 5 furlongs at the Curragh in August, followed by the Town Moore Handicap at Doncaster’s St Leger Meeting where Diadem defied top weight and a late challenge to win by a head from Quadrille. She won the Challenge Stakes in October and closed the term with a distant second in the 1m 1 furlong Cambridgeshire Stakes.
6yo (1920)
By 6, Diadem was being assigned welterweights, but undeterred, the gallant little filly still managed
12 starts for 7 wins, 4 seconds and a third. She won three times at Ascot, including the 1920 Rous Memorial in a walkover and All Aged Stakes on 17 June, followed by a second consecutive Kings Stand victory the following day. She won the Bottisham Plate at Newmarket three weeks later, followed by a second July Cup in a walkover on 1 July. She suffered narrow defeats in the Molneus Plate, the King George and the Peveri of the Peak Plate at the Derby summer meeting, before threading back to back victories in Newmarket’s Snailwell Stakes and the Thames Stakes at Kempton over 1 ½ miles. A second attempt at the Champion Stakes at Newmarket saw her finish a well beaten 7 lengths 3rd over the 1 ¼ mile trip.
7yo (1921)
Diadem had two final starts as a 7yo, finishing fourth in the 6 furlong Royal Stakes at Epsom (02/06) and then posted a second placed finish at Ascot in the 7 furlong Rous Memorial Stakes (16/06), to close her career with 24 wins and thirteen places from 39 starts.
Legacy
Diadem retired to stud but sadly did not produce anything of consequence and died at the age of 17 in 1931. The great sprint filly was honoured by Ascot Racecourse when they named a new sprint race in her honour in 1946, although Ascot's Diadem Stakes is now known as the British Champions Sprint Stakes. She is still remembered every year at Kenilworth and 2019 will see the 60th renewal of one of South Africa’s greatest sprint races.
The 1200m Diadem Stakes was the longest standing WFA sprint in South Africa. As every race tells a story, we consulted SA Racing’s ‘History man’, Charles Faull, to learn more about the history and significance of this great race. The Diadem is on a par status-wise with the LQP mile,” Charles states firmly. At least it was, until it was compromised to a conditions event in 2015.”
he inaugural running of the Diadem WFA Stakes took place on Saturday, 30 Nov 1957, when it was won by Mr J.W. Hill’s 3yo filly Tetrina. The filly, trained by Stanley Gorton
and ridden to victory by Freddie Heyman, downed Black Pirate, a son of the mighty Black Cap (IRE), in the process. She was a tremendous race filly who went on to become a taproot mare. Black Pirate had to settle for second again when the 1958 Diadem was won by Tetrina’s full brother, Royal Affair. Johnny Cawcutt in the saddle that day, recounted,“We started with tapes in
those days and I was left standing after Bertie Sage on Time To Shine had cut us off at the jump. We lost at least 4 lengths, and yet I was 8 lengths clear after only 200 metres. I never let him go and still won by 7 lengths from Black Pirate.” Johnny classified it ‘the most staggering sprint performance of my life’ and remained adamant that Royal Affair was the fastest horse ever seen in South Africa. The two horses met again in the 1959 Queen’s Plate, won in a staggering performance from Royal Affair, who broke down inside the final furlong, with Black Pirate in 3rd place. Black Pirate was vindicated in 1959, winning the race by a neck
from Astray and Time To Shine, with a half sister to Tetrina and Royal Affair, Teresina, in 4th. Black Pirate would go on to finish 2nd in both the 1960 Queen’s Plate and the Met, beaten less than a length in each. Black Pirate made it a Diadem double in 1960, not only confirming his own quality, but putting the 7 length beating he’d received from Royal Affair into sharp relief.
The Mighty Inverthorn Inverthorn ruled the Diadem in 1961, beating the mighty Royal Affair (by this point having recovered from breakdowns in the Queen’s Plate as well as in the
USA), by 0.75 length and winning the Queen’s Plate from the mighty Jerez a month later, in a race hailed by Sir Mordaunt Milner as the greatest of all time. Inverthorn won it again in 1962, beating subsequent July winner Left Wing and the mighty filly, Majorca. He finished 3rd in 1964, followed up by a 2nd place finish in the Queen’s Plate behind Fair Mountain. “He was a tremendous racehorse,” pronounces Charles. The 1963 race went to Cheery Chatter, “a good horse” who won it by 1.5 lengths and in 1964 it was won by Vaso. By now the race had slipped into an early December slot. In 1965 the race went the

In 1971, the race was named the Southern Cross Stakes. Prosperous won it for Millard with Yves St Martin in the saddle. Captain Bell and Fernando Toro fought them tooth and nail, but were ultimately beaten a head. Gianfranco Dettori (Frankie’s dad) riding Sultan’s Pearl was 3rd. Captain Bell won the Cape Flying Championship on 12 February with Johnny Cawcutt in the saddle, beating the imported Miss Lindeman and Bolero. The race was called the Southern Cross Stakes again in 1972, when it was won by Lords, ridden by Willie Carson. Fernando Toro was 2nd on Captain Bell by 1.5 lengths. “When they brought international jockeys over And then there in those days, they brought the world’s were two best,” says Charles. In February, Lords The Diadem was contested by finished 2nd to the mighty Sentinel 0.5 length. In 1967 the race went the way of Fire Eyes. “This,” remembers Charles, “was an interesting horse. It was one of those strange things. He won the Cape Derby and then lost his ability to go a mile and a half and ended up a pure sprinter.” Peter Beware racked a second Diadem in 1968, beating the ‘iron horse’, William Penn, and then finished 2nd (to William Penn) in the 1969 Queen’s Plate and then won the Met.

Mrs Frank Waring’s Lurgan to victory for Chris Snaith. “Karl was a head waiter like Bert Abercrombie. He stalked them 3 lengths back the whole way and then pounced at the 200m and won going away from Jack Mitchell’s Young Captain,” remembers Charles. That season’s Cape Flying was won by War Ribbon (by Royal Affair), beating Spider O’Toole, Rotterdam and Horatius, with Lurgan in 5th. Chris Snaith was back in 1982 with Breeze Past. It was a windless day and Kenny Michel took him to the front and held on from the Ralph Rixon-trained Craftsman, leaving a great field behind them. “Kenny was a great rider and it was a tactical masterstroke to hold off Craftsman.” The December Cape Flying was won by Foreign Ambassador, coming off the back of winning the Cape Guineas. There was no Diadem in 1983, although the Cape Flying was won by the Mike Bass trained Green Silver with Gavin Howes, beating the oddson Smackeroo from Joburg. 1984 was another Snaith victory, when Karl Neisius on Front Cover dead-heated with Garth Puller and the Kannemeyer-trained Chili Bite. The race was held in September, on yielding going. Front Cover went to the outside and hit the front with Mystery Me. Chili Bite just got there for the photo. In January, Tucaman, one of Graham Beck’s first good horses, won the Cape Flying. Kenny Michel was back again on Mrs Zuccola’s Gin Rummy in 1985, beating Chili Bite. In a brilliant race,
Karl Neisius won that year’s Cape Flying Championship on Lord Randolph, beating Sunera (GB). In 1986, Eric Fordred won on Izindaba, probably on a par with Politician’s other crack sprinter, Senor Amigo. Charles interjects, “Crown Agent nearly caught her, but Eric coaxed her home to hold off a good field.” Equine flu sadly put paid to the Cape Flying Championship that season. The result went the way of Snaith, Neisius and the 4yo Lord Randolph for the Jaffees in 1987. Lord Randolph went on to contest the Cape Flying, but was pegged back by the Eric Sands trained Wexford Boy by 0.75 lengths. There was another son of a Diadem winner in 1988, with Express Courier (by Over The Air), bred by Maine Chance Farms, trained by Stan Elley and ridden by Allan Levy, who got up to beat Eric Fordred on Esprit du Corps by a neck. That season, the Cape Flying went the way of Springing Leopard (USA) by Hawaii, for Felix Coetzee and Terrance Millard. 1989 saw a win for the wonderful filly Wainui for Glen Hatt and Guy Rixon, winning by 4.75 lengths from a stellar field including Mark Anthony, Priceless Asset, Springing Leopard, etc. “What a filly,” breathes Charles. “She took the lead approaching the 500m and pulled away.” The Cape Flying was won by the Woodruff-trained Simonside from Springing Leopard.

....to learn more about the history and significance of this great race. In 1990, Simonside took the Diadem title, giving Geoff Woodruff one of his first big wins. Woodruff collected the Cape sprint double, winning the Cape Flying Championship with Alnwick and Eric Chelin.
Flaming Rock (IRE) 1991 saw the first of Flaming Rock’s wins and he cantered down 8-10 favourite. Tucked in with the second rank, Karl sat, sat, sat and finally moved at the 200m, drawing up to Steaming Jungle who was trying to make all and then drawing away for the win. In January, John McDonald collected the Cape Flying trophy with the 3yo Senor Amigo (Gerrit Schlechter), winning impressively from Polished Silver and Alnwick. Flaming Rock collected his second Diadem title in 1992, beating Spanish Galliard and San Carlos with Paul Gadsby on board. Flaming Rock started at 6-1. San Carlos went clear and was only caught in the last 100m. Flaming Rock won by ¾ length from Spanish Galliard. That season, Senor Amigo again won the Cape Flying for John McDonald, beating Taban, Gang Leader and Marie Galante. In December 1993, Phantom Saga took the race from Best Of The Best and Tough Love, winning by 1 length at 8-1 with Freddie Macaskill on board. Best Of The Best franked the result by winning the January Cape Flying.
Flobayou 1994 saw the first of Flobayou’s three victories, beating another champion sprinter in Taban by 2.5 lengths. He won the race again in 1995, finished 4th to Cordocelli in 1996 and then bounced back for a third win in 1997.
Nhlavini Nhlavini won back to back renewals in 2001 (with Jeff Lloyd), finishing a head to the good of Sion (Mark Khan) and celebrated again with Jeff Lloyd in 2002, ahead of Eli’s Game and National Title. With no race in 2003, the 2004 renewal went to Honour The Guest with Bernard Fayd’herbe and Nhlavini 2nd. Nhlavini exacted revenge in 2005, winning a third Diadem title. In 2006, Golden Ivory won the Diadem by a nose from Pocket Power, before Pocket embarked on his L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate domination. The race went the way of Rebel King in 2007, with Anton Marcus on board, beating the game Blue Tiger. Run in late December 2008, Blue Tiger (Andrew Fortune) beat stablemate Pocket Power by 1.25 lengths, this time with Bernard Fayd’herbe in the saddle. Blue Tiger (Karl Neisius) had to settle for second again in 2009, going down half a length to the Glen Kotzen trained Thunder Key and Karis Teetan. Past Master won the race in 2010, en route to his 2011 J&B Met victory, beating Gaultier and Blue Tiger.
What A Winter What A Winter posted back to back wins, first with Karl Neisius in 2011 (beating crack filly Ebony Flyer, who flew late with Felix Coetzee) and again, very late in 2012, without WPOTA as the sponsor, with Bernard Fayd’herbe, besting stablemate Castlethorpe and Cap Alright. What A Winter, like Royal Affair and Captain Al, is adding great value at stud. In 2013, it was the turn of another filly, when Mike de Kock and Kevin Shea brought Mary Slack’s Welwitschia (GB) to the Cape and beat Jackson, Cap Alright and Divine Jet. 2014 saw the turn of Dennis Drier trained Captain Of All (Sean Cormack), beating Copper Parade and Fly By Night.
Bishop's Bounty Genevieve Michel
In 1998, the John McDonaldtrained Okukama beat Dad’s Elect by 1.75 lengths, creating a unique piece of historical colour as he was ridden to victory by Genevieve Michel the first lady rider to win the race. 1999, the first year the race was run as the WPOTA Diadem Stakes, was another vintage year with Gerrit Schlechter steering home Eli’s Game for Mike Bass, with such as Free My Heart and Cordocelli behind him. 2000 was the turn of the mighty Captain Al, again with Karl Neisius in the saddle, beating another Cape Guineas winner, Ethno Centric with his nephew Mark Neisius on board.
Conditions Change In a move condemned as a disgrace by Charles Faull, 2015 saw the race subverted to WFA plus penalties, with the victory going the way of the Mike Bass-trained Lanner Falcon (Grant van Niekerk), over Fly By Night, Gulf Storm and King Of Pain. “This was a very important race. It’s a disgrace that a race with such a great heritage and importance to South African sprinting history has been reduced to a conditions event.” The following year, the race was inched even further forward in the
calendar, being run in mid-January 2017 and went the way of Trip To Heaven (Sean Tarry / S’manga Khumalo), who characteristically got left at the gates and came flying to win by 3.75 lengths from the always game, Tevez. In 2018, the race was won for the first time by Justin Snaith, with his Lammerskraal-bred Bishop’s Bounty and the in-form Grant van Niekerk, by two lengths from the evergreen Tevez. 2019 sees the race moved right back to the end of February, to share the billing with the Vasco Prix du Cap and Kenilworth’s annual Prawn Festival. Charles adds in closing, “The Diadem has been won by champions, from champions, providing spectacle, fame and folklore. Its rich history and lasting legacy on our tracks, stud and history books, cannot be overstated.”

“Many of them tried to pace it with Horse Chestnut but inevitably came up gasping for air at the 200m. That’s like the rest of us taking on Mike de Kock. So I will be content with my personal milestone and keep the focus on winning races.”
he words of a typically self effacing Sean Tarry after his 2000 winner landmark at Turffontein on Sunday and also in response to a question as to whether he would now be upping the ante and chasing the De Kock standard. A multiple SA champion, De Kock notched his 3000 career winner in early March 2017 after 19 years at the stable grindstone. On Sunday, the 50 year old Sean Gerard Tarry joined a select group of professionals to saddle 2000 winners when the 3yo Byword colt Flash Burn led most of the way to win the Turffontein ninth race in the hands of SA champion jockey Lyle Hewitson. Flash Burn was Tarry’s 86th winner of the season with a current win strike-rate of 13%. He has saddled 108 stakes winners. We asked him how it felt to reach the magical mark and if he had ever thought he would actually get there. “When I started out working at Randjesfontein twenty odd years ago with 16 horses, I was trying to establish myself and break through in a tough game. One tends to be more focussed on the day-to-day goals than milestones at that stage. But I must say that I am very honoured to join the 2000 club – although tomorrow the sun rises and life goes on - and we have to keep working at maintaining the standard and producing the winners,” said the 50 year old, who presently leads reigning SA champion Justin Snaith by R2,3 million in a two horse race on the SP leading trainer tables. Dedicated and a professional allrounder, Sean Tarry exudes confidence and an air of calm as he reflects on a successful career and three SA champion titles to his name. The dual Vodacom Durban July and Met winning trainer also saddled his half century of Gr1 winners when the very talented R110 000 March Yearling Sale buy Tilbury Fort won the Summer Cup on 1 December. Sean intends maintaining a small string at Milnerton for the R225 000 Klawervlei Farm Sale race at Kenilworth on 9 March. He rounds off his Cape Summer Season major feature campaign on Saturday with Chimichuri Run and 2017 winner Trip To Heaven in the Khaya Stables sponsored Gr2 Diadem Stakes “They are both well and must be considered competitive runners.
Chimichuri Run was very quiet after his below par CTS 1600 effort on Met day. He didn’t enjoy the long run-in of the Kenilworth Summer Course and may not have stayed a true run mile . We have freshened him up and dropped him back to the 1200m. I have a feeling that he is probably at his very best when running over the 1200m around the turn. He should go well and has Anton Marcus in the irons.” Often labelled the best horse never to win a Gr1, the perennially slow-starting 7yo Trip To Heaven bids for his second Diadem win. “He is a top-class sprinter as his record shows. He injured his shoulder when running third in the Mercury Sprint last season in KZN. We gave him time on the farm and brought him back slowly. He needed both his starts this term and was not disgraced at either outing as the form book shows. He will be much fitter on Saturday and is still racing with plenty of enthusiasm,” added Sean. Current SA champion jockey, the Avontuur-sponsored Lyle Hewitson rides Trip To Heaven and appropriately partnered the Tarry 2000th winner on Sunday. We asked Sean what the status was regarding S’manga Khumalo, the former SA Champion, with whom he enjoyed a successful association over many years.
Sean Tarry chats to Fee Ramsden
“Our stable jockey arrangements have largely developed circumstantially over time. Lyle works a lot, he has slotted in well and has had good success for us. Yes, he rides most of our feature horses but S’manga still makes himself available when required. He has been freelancing and mixing it up more - and let’s face it there comes a time in any professional relationship where there is evolution and change. It can be positive for both parties to develop new avenues. I have been blessed with top jockeys and, like staunch owners and loyal staff, they are key to the success of any yard.” With his Milnerton satellite yard still in operation for another three weeks, the Tarry operation has three active ‘branches’ – with their Summerveld permanent yard, currently housing 30 horses, being readied for the SA Champions Season, which commences on 3 May. Sean said that he had no clearcut plan yet as regards the SA Champions Season and would be
playing it by ear as he went along. “We enjoyed massive success out of Clairwood but Summerveld as a training centre is not yet proven for us. I may opt to raid some of the coastal features from Gauteng where we have over 150 horses and rotate the string. But plans remain fluid and we will do what is very best for each individual.” Times are tough – what of the future? “I’m fortunate to have committed and patient owners who understand the game and have stuck with
me. I am also proud to boast top personnel – and that’s important as this is not a one man show. In the broader context, horseracing is all that most of us know so we need to work on building the game up and being positive. Yes, things have gotten tougher economically and we have naysayers and negativity in the air. But that applies in any industry and SA racing is in good hands and we all just need to work together and pull through. Whatever the challenges, this remains a great game. There’s lots to be bullish about and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Clickety Click… Veteran Milnerton trainer Piet Steyn made some pointed observations about the sad lack of support of the smaller trainer after his winner at Kenilworth on Saturday. Without naming names, he pointed a finger for the ‘disaster’ in the ‘clicky Cape’ at ‘agents, breeders and the whole clique’. “It doesn’t matter how good you are – if you are not in that flow you can forget about it. In two years we will have five yards left here,” he added. What’s the answer?
Jackpot Pure Magic
Versatile Varsfontein sire Judpot, a half-brother to breed shaping sire Kingmambo, produced Sunday’s Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap winner Down To Zero. Judpot has one lot on next month’s Cape Yearling Sale. Lot 163 is a ¾ sister to the Gr1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic/ Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks winner Juxtapose.
Summerhill based Willow Magic, the first Gr1 winning son of Dubawi to stand at stud in South Africa, will offer his first yearlings at the National Yearling Sale on 24, 25 and 26 April. Trained by Sean Tarry, Willow Magic won the Gr1 SA Nursery and Gr2 Dingaans. The only British stallion to ever sire 100 Group winners in no time at all, Dubawi is the sire of 38 Gr1 winners and counting, with 16% Stakes winners and 10% Group winners. Impressive stats.

PRETTY PUNCHY While we are battling to get folk to our racecourses, the Brits have a different problem. A mass brawl erupted at Haydock Park on Saturday just before the final race at the prestigious Grand National Trial meeting. Apparently 40 or 50 people were involved. There are reports of beer and more beer and the action started after one punter bumped another. The fight follows several similar incidents on British courses in 2018, including a mass brawl at Goodwood’s opening fixture in May.
Left…& Right! It’s not often a first-timer gets left and loses lengths at the jump - and wins convincingly. Joey Ramsden’s R400 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate Minnesota Dream (Visionaire), racing in the familiar King Of Pain silks, caught the eye at Kenilworth on Saturday. He won the 1000m Maiden Juvenile Plate by just under a length under S’manga Khumalo at 13-1. He is the second of JR’s four 2yo runners this term to win.
The 2017 Vodacom Durban July winner Marinaresco looks likely to have his second Dubai start at Meydan on Thursday in the $250 000 Gr2 Zabeel Mile. The 6yo Silvano gelding finished just over 5 lengths back in the Al Fahidi Fort last month in his first outing since going third to Oh Susanna in the 2018 Sun Met. His first start in Dubai impressed trainer Mike de Kock and Marinaresco could also start in the Gr1 Jebel Hatta over 1800m on 9 March.
Frankly Fine
Opportunities for owners in Hong Kong to acquire progeny of Frankel without dipping into the European sales market are few and far between but on 15 March a pair of 3yo geldings bought at the Arqana August Yearling Sale in 2017 will step into the Sha Tin parade ring for the Hong Kong International Sale. Frankel has produced 19 Group winners from his firs crop - a figure which equates to an impressive 22 per cent Group winners to runners and he reached 20 Group winners quicker than any other European stallion in history. It is hardly surprising that his stud fee for 2019 is £175,000.
SHONGWENI COUNTDOWN A reminder that the Shongweni Mixed Sale will be held at the famous Polo Grounds on Tuesday 26 February. 114 lots make up the catalogue for this year’s sale, which, once again, will offer buyers the opportunity to acquire bloodstock, for a variety of purposes, at bargain basement prices.
KZN Yearling Sale Bloodstock South Africa are accepting entries for the KZN Yearling Sale to be held at Sibaya on 4 and 5 July. Entries close on 22 March. Visit www.bsa.co.za for more info.

More Than Skin Deep!
Life Begins At 30 For Winx!
S
Supermare Winx commenced her farewell campaign at Randwick in style on Saturday, running a race record time as she toyed with her opponents in the A$252,000 Gr2 Apollo Stakes run over 1400m at Randwick. She made history, becoming the first horse to win the Apollo three times.
tretching her winning sequence to 30, it was just the sort of performance trainer Chris Waller and connections wanted to see at her first run since her fourth Cox Plate triumph in October. Winx defeated the ever reliable Happy Clapper by 2.25 lengths with two-lengths to Egg Tart –
owned in similar interests to Winx – finishing third. Jockey Hugh Bowman put Winx into a more forward position (fifth) as the field settled into stride out of respect for Happy Clapper, who tracked the leaders. “We needed to be within striking distance but as the race unfolded we settled into a lovely rhythm, as we always do and it was a pretty comfortable race for me and Winx as
well,” Bowman said. “She was in pure control from the 600 metres when the pressure started to build. “As I went past Sam (Clipperton, rider of Happy Clapper) I really asked her for a full effort.” Winx has won 34 of her 40 starts. Bowman has ridden Winx 30 times for 29 wins Part-owner Peter Tighe dedicated the victory to those Australians “doing it tough” in North Queensland with the floods and in Western NSW with bushfires. “We hope it puts a smile on your face and gives you a little bit of hope and gives you something to think about and dream about,” Tighe said. www.theaustralian.com.au
Vorster Starts New Phase
V
Singapore-based South African Barend Vorster has been issued a giant challenge for his first ride in Australia.
orster is booked to ride rank outsider Game Keeper in Saturday’s Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield in Melbourne. Game Keeper has drawn barrier one in the 14-horse field. One of Singapore’s leading jockeys over a long period, Vorster is Australia-bound to ride for Game Keeper’s trainer Tony McEvoy as his South Australian stable jockey as soon as he gains his visa. Vorster said he and McEvoy had also discussed the prospects of the occasional trip to Melbourne to ride and he was pleased to get the opportunity ahead of his permanent move. “It’s come up a little earlier than expected,” Vorster told AAP from Singapore. “Tony rang me on Monday to see if I was interested which I definitely was.
“I’ll come back to Singapore on Sunday and hopefully it won’t be too long before I’m back down again. “I’m really grateful for the opportunity. It’s wonderful racing with quality horses and I’m really looking forward to it.” Vorster said he would arrive in Melbourne on Friday and hoped to pick up a ride or two earlier on Saturday’s card and get a feel of the track. www.justhorseracing.com.au
Magic Millions

Cape Derby winner Atyaab was a first Gr1 winner for his Arrowfield sire Dundeel, who was the leading sire on an average of A$125,000 at Book One of the 2019 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale earlier this week.
beautifully related colt by leading Hunter Valley based sire I Am Invincible topped the charts. Catalogued as Lot 66 the colt from Western Breeders Alliance was purchased by leading Perth bloodstock agent John Chalmers in partnership with Pearce Racing for A$260,000. The colt was the star on a momentous day for the WA thoroughbred industry coinciding with the first day of selling from Magic Millions' new Swan Valley Sales Complex. He's a lovely colt," co-trainer Ben Pearce said the I Am Invincible sale topper.
"He's very powerful. We'll be excited to get him to the races for a loyal client of ours Warren Martin." The colt is by leading Yarraman Park Stud sire I Am Invincible and is from the grand producing Real Jester mare Jestceny, who has produced five winners including Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic winner The River and stakes-performers Jestpatim and Soundcheck. 23 yerlings sold for A$100,000 or more, with fillies by Zoustar and Snitzel selling for A$200,000 to Harvey Racing and Aquis Farm respectively. During the session almost A$7 million changed hands on 105 lots sold at a record average price of A$64,981, with an initial clearance rate of over 77 per cent, and at a A$55,000 median.
Tarry Two
On the same day that Sean Tarry notched his 2000th winner, Justin Evans scored his own 2000th career victory at Sunland Park in New Mexico on Sunday. Evans, 37, saddled his first winner on 27 July 1999 at the now defunct Prescott Downs near his childhood home in Chino Valley, Arizona. Read more about Tarry on page 11.

Karaka graduate Beauty Generation (NZ) (Road to Rock) continued his spectacular dominance of Hong Kong racing with another emphatic victory in Sunday’s HK$10 million Gr1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (1400m) at Sha Tin.
t was a seventh consecutive win for the unstoppable gelding, who was bought for just NZ $60,000 at the 2014 Select Sale. He has won 11 of his last 14 starts. The toughest opposition on Sunday was expected to come from fellow Karaka graduate Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook), who was narrowly ahead after the first 200 metres. But Beauty Generation and jockey Zac Purton slid forward into their customary front-running role and did it easily from there, powering to victory by a length and threequarters in a time of 1:21.03. Beat The Clock held on for second, two lengths clear of the rest of the field.
“It’s just a repeat of what he’s been doing all season,” Beauty Generation’s trainer John Moore said. “He just keeps doing it. He’s just too good and Zac’s the composite horseman, he knows exactly what’s going on.” Raced by Patrick Kwok, Beauty Generation is the reigning Hong Kong Horse of the Year. His rating of 127 is the equal highest ever in Hong Kong. He has now had 28 starts for 15 wins, six of them at Gr1 level. He has placed in another seven races, earning more than HK$72 million in prizemoney. That’s the equivalent of NZ$13.3 million, which is more than 220 times his purchase price.
Cape Sire’s Aussie Gr1 Success

Cape based stallion Time Thief’s gutsy daughter In Her Time held on to notch her second GrI win in Saturday’s Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington.
n Her Time won The Galaxy at Rosehill last autumn before lasting to notch her maiden Melbourne win when she held off the fast-finishing Osborne Bulls in the $750,000 Lightning Stakes. In Her Time faced the breeze near the speed but refused to give in when challenged at the 50m, clinging to a short-head margin on the line over Osborne Bulls. The Tony McEvoy-trained Sunlight was third. Zac Purton was aboard for In Her Time’s win in The Galaxy but Corey Brown was thrilled to score
at the highest level on a sprinter with which he has developed a strong partnership. “I’ve had a little bit of luck on her. I’ve had some bad luck on her as well so to get the Group I, it’s a job well done,” Brown said. “She jumped good, which she normally doesn’t and travelled up well, it’s her first time over the 1000(m) under race conditions. “She didn’t win by a big margin but it was a tough win.” In Her Time’s trainer Kris Lees said Brown’s decision to let In Her Time roll forward after beginning well was the winning move in the Lightning Stakes.
Spies Cleared The National Horseracing Authority has confirmed that Trainer Tobie Spies was afforded the opportunity to make representations to Executive Management of the NHA on Tuesday, 19 February 2019. This was in relation to certain allegations made against the legitimacy of his training operations in South Africa. The allegations related to his satellite training yards in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town being operated by people to train horses under his name and licence, as a racehorse trainer, (“training under the lap”). Mr Spies provided documentation and supporting evidence proving that
the allegations were false and that he employs licenced Assistant Trainers and Stable Employees in the said training yards to run operations in his absence. The NHA confirms that Trainer Spies has the necessary registered licensed individuals to take care of the operations. As he is domiciled in Gauteng and attends most frequently to his training operation based at the Vaal Racecourse, the NHA advised him that he should ensure that he undertakes more frequent visits, particularly to his satellite yard in Port Elizabeth. This will be monitored by NHA Executive Management and the local Stipendiary Boards.

Pathfork (Distorted Humor Visions Of Clarity)
W
Promising US three-year-old, War Of Will, a War Front half-brother to Cape sire and Irish Champion, Pathfork, has again shown his class with a convincing win in the Gr2 Risen Star Stakes on Saturday.
ar Of Will sports more than one connection to South Africa – he hails from the same family as former champion sire and multiple champion broodmare sire, Northern Guest, and his Gr1 Phoenix Stakes winning third dam, Aviance, was sired by former
South African based stallion, and champion broodmare sire, Northfields. The 2019 Risen Star Stakes winner has four lines of the ubiquitous Northern Dancer through the latter’s sons Danzig (sire of War Front), Sadler’s Wells (damsire of War Of Will), Northfields and Nijinsky II. The latter is broodmare sire of champion sprinter Rubiano, the broodmare sire of War
Front. Where will the inbreeding to Northern Dancer will end, with current boom stallions Frankel, Redoute’s Choice, Fastnet Rock, Dubawi, Oasis Dream, and Exceed And Excel all inbred to the great Canadian? War Of Will and Pathfork’s first five dams are all black type performers, with dam Visions Of Clarity having won a Listed race in France, second dam, Imperfect Circle, a stakes winner and runner up in the Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes, third dam, Aviance a Gr1 winner, fourth dam the stakes placed Minnie Hauk and fifth dam having won the Gr3 Comely Stakes. New sire off the mark – Soft Falling Rain
Champagne For The Rain
R
Just five months after his sudden passing, Wilgerbosdrift’s National Assembly sire Soft Falling Rain produced a breathtaking first winner when his daughter Gin Fizz showed a spectacular turn of foot to win on debut at Turffontein on Sunday.
acing in the familiar Wilgerbosdrift black and scarlet finery, the 2yo was bred by Mauritzfontein and Wilgerbosdrift. Well backed into oddson, she was always in control in the 1000m maiden and drew right away to win unextended by 7,40 lengths in a time 58,45 secs. Mike de Kock trained the winner’s sire and dam and expressed great
hope for the Soft Falling Rain progeny. “He was a top horse and his daughter is talented. She is a bit temperamental though and has been ready for a while. Full marks to whisperer Malan du Toit as she could easily have gone the other way – we were quite nervous but I’m pleased with the effort.” Jockey Gavin Lerena enjoyed an armchair ride for his sponsors. “She is loaded with ability and gave me a wonderful feel,” he added.
The Highlands Stud bred champion Soft Falling Rain was just nine years old at the time of his passing and had been expected to cover a full book of mares in 2018 when he passed in September last year. One of 16 Gr1 winners sired by unraced Danzig sire National Assembly, Soft Falling Rain was one of five winners produced by the winning Giant’s Causeway mare Gardener’s Delight. He hails from the same family as the breed shaping US champion sire Smart Strike, sire of current stallion sensations Curlin, English Channel and Lookin At Lucky. Soft Falling Rain was never beaten in South Africa, from four starts at two. The bay followed up two smart wins by landing the Listed Storm Bird Stakes
confirmed his status as the latest top class performer descended from the prolific producer, Best In Show (Traffic Judge). The latter, the fifth dam of War Of Will and Pathfork, was once again to the fore of major feature race winners over the weekend. Best In Show is ancestress of now leading Kentucky Derby contender, War Of Will, and also features as the fourth dam of the increasingly influential, and multiple champion sire, Redoute’s Choice, whose descendants were once again prominent in Australia on Saturday. Redoute’s Choice’s now Nadeson Park based son, Time Thief, is the sire of top racemare, In Her Time, who scored a courageous win in the Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. Now a ninetime winner, with earnings of in excess of AUS$3 million to her name, the six-year-old In Her Time had previously tasted Gr1 success when victorious in the 2018 Gr1 The PFD Food Services Galaxy and also has five Gr1 placings to her name. In Her Time’s dam is a daughter of the lightning fast Zeditave, who is from the immediate family of July winner and Rosedene Stud sire, Greys Inn. Her sire is one of a growing number of Redoute’s Choice sire sons to enjoy Gr1 success with others including Snitzel, Stratum, Not A Single Doubt, Beneteau and Fast ‘N’ Famous. Redoute’s Choice and War Of Will were both sired by a Danzig son - with Redoute’s Choice a son of Danehill and War Of Will a son of War Front. A triple champion sire, the impeccably bred Redoute’s Choice has almost inevitably become an outstanding broodmare sire and he features as the damsire of Saturday’s Gr3 The TAB Vanity winner, Amphitrite (Sebring). The latter, whose prior wins included the Gr1 VRC Thousand Guineas, is one of 13 Gr1 winners produced by daughters of Redoute’s Choice, with others including before confirming his championship status when victorious in the 2012 Gr1 SA Nursery. He was named Equus Champion 2YO Colt for 2012-2013. Exported to Dubai where he was named UAE Champion Miler, Soft Falling Rain reeled off three consecutive wins, with his victories including an historic score in the G2 Godolphin Mile – he was the first 3yo ever to win that prestigious contest. He also won the Gr3 UAE 2000 Guineas and UAE 2000 Guineas Prep. Soft Falling Rain became one of just a handful of horses to win in three different countries when he smashed some smart rivals to land the Gr2 Nayef Joel Stakes at Newmarket in 2013. He ended his racing career having won 8 of 13 races and earned over £740 000 in prize money. Soft Falling Rain retired to Wilgerbosdrift in 2015 and his first yearlings made an impact at yearling sales around South Africa in 2018. He was the Leading First Crop Sire by Aggregate at the 2018 Cape Premier
current red hot stallion, Zoustar (Northern Meteor). Another famous descendant of Best In Show, Rags To Riches (A P Indy), made news this past weekend when it was announced that the Belmont Stakes winning filly was one of five equine finalists to be voted into the North American National Museum and Racing Hall Of Fame. Rags To Riches, Champion 3YO Filly in the USA in 2007, won five of seven races and made history when becoming only the third filly to win the classic Belmont Stakes, when beating subsequent dual Horse of The Year and star sire, Curlin, in the 2400m contest of 2007. Rags To Riches’ half-brother, Jazil (by Seeking The Gold, won the Belmont Stakes one year before his sibling. Best in Show was ancestress of a number of current and former South African stallions, including Atso, Devilish Ninja, Modus Vivendi, as well as the mentioned Northern Guest and Pathfork. Both Pathfork and Northern Guest are continuing to enjoy success at various levels in South Africa, with Pathfork responsible for recent Listed Tattersalls Summer Juvenile Stakes winner Miss Honey, and fellow high class fillies, Madame Speaker and Mighty High, while Northern Guest broodmares continue to make their presence felt here. Northern Guest is damsire of last season’s Leading First Crop Sire, Pomodoro, and also appears in the pedigrees of Equus Champion and triple Gr1 winner, Capetown Noir, who, at the time of writing, is South Africa’s third Leading First Crop sire by prize money. The Best In Show connection was also felt in 2017, as Manhattan Rain, whose fourth dam is Best In Show, sired 2017 G1 Sun Met winner, Whisky Baron. Yearling Sale, where yearlings by the former Premier Sale graduate made up to R1 400 000 and grossed R4 000 000 in total. He also proved hit at the 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, where yearlings by Soft Falling Rain fetched as much as R1 400 000. Soft Falling Rain was the fourth Leading Sire overall, by Aggregate, at the National Sale, where his yearlings grossed a total of R10 295. Million. The winner is a first foal for the well-performed Espumanti who raced for De Kock and retired after pulling up lame in the July in 2014. By Dansili from Jouet, she started her racing career in April 2012 and raced 17 times for six wins from 1160m -1900m and accumulated six places. Espumanti won two Gr2 races and was Gr1-placed three times, including a second to superstar Beach Beauty in the 2012 Garden Province Stakes.

A review of the week's best SPEEDRATINGS
Two From Four Scottsville 10 February The best bet for most in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday was HOME RULER in the girl’s maiden plate over 1200m, and she didn’t let down her supporters. Always deep in the red, Dennis Drier’s charge was soon up handy. She was ridden to lead going through the 200m and with the rest some seven lengths adrift, she beat the lightly raced MANTLE by a length and a half. There were three races run over 1200m in total and in the fastest of these, a graduation plate, the 3yo Rock Of Gibraltar gelding SOLID GOLD gained his second victory from just four starts. Well supported on course to go off second favourite at 47/20, Michael Roberts’ charge was soon positioned close to the speed. He ran on strongly over the final 200m and with the rest left trailing in their wake, he only got the better of the 17/10 favourite EXCLUSIVE QUANTITY (raced at the back of the six) by the narrowest of margins The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1600m where the faster of the two maiden events was the boy’s affair in which KING’S COVE opened his account. He got away well when the gates opened and nicely positioned in fifth was always poised to strike. He did so as they approached the 200m marker and won going away by three. TITBITS Improving JACK OF HEARTS won the maiden plate over 1950m going away by a length and a quarter.

Silently progressing Greyville 13 February Three of the eight races on Wednesday afternoon were staged over 1400m and stopping the clock in the fastest of these, a MR76 Handicap, was EUPHORIC. Freely available at 12/1 on the off, Dennis Drier’s charge was always handy. He quickened well at the top of the short home straight and got the verdict by a half over the more fancied COLLABRO (came from the rear). A MR60 Handicap over 1000m had opened up proceedings and in what proved to be a real thriller victory here went to the 4yoYAAS. A winner over the course and distance last time out, the daughter of Main Aim also raced close to the speed. She put her head in front going through the 300m and in a race where only a quarter of a length separated the first four home, she got the verdict on the nod. A MR80 Handicap over 1900m topped the bill and here victory went to the progressive 3yo LAST OF THE LEGEND. A fluent winner of his only previous racecourse appearance, the son of Horse Chestnut was soon prominent. He took up the running 300m out and kept on strongly late to beat the well-supported favourite HIGH GREEN by a half. TITBITS The 3yo FORTHELASTIME ran on well from midfield when comfortably accounting for his eleven rivals in the MR66 affair over 1600m.
Fairview 15 February A MR98 Handicap topped the bill on Friday’s poly track card and in what on my clock proved to be the faster of the two 1200m events, the grey FLIGHT CAPTAIN registered his seventh career victory. Taken straight to the front by Lyle Hewitson, the Captain Al gelding led throughout. He kept on strongly at the business end of the race and held on by a quarter from the faster finishing BORDER CONTROL. The Western Cape raider CELESTIAL PRINCE was the best bet on the card for most and in the end he did the business quite easily. Not the quickest into stride when the gates opened, Candice Bass-Robinson’s charge raced second last early on. Cleverly ridden by Bernard Fayd’Herbe though, the son of Duke Of Marmalade circled runners rounding the home turn and was then nicely positioned in fifth at the top of the straight. He struck the front 150m out and went on to score going away by three. There were a number of easy victories on the afternoon, but none more so than that of the former Cape Town campaigner ETERNAL NIGHT. Sent off second in the betting market at 10/3, the Black Minnaloushe mare was soon up handy. She was ridden to lead approaching the 200m pole and cruised clear in the closing stages of the race to score by six and a quarter. TITBITS Having her first outing since relocating from the Western Cape, ALPHABET STREET came from second last when running on stoutly to fill second position in the opening maiden plate over 1000m.
Kenilworth 16 February to the speed. He ran on strongly over the final 400m and got up late to deny the front running outsider SINGFONICO. Four of the afternoon’s eight races were run over 1400m and stopping the clock in the fastest time amongst these was WAITING FOR RAIN in the MR79 Handicap. Allowed to ease right out to 13/1 at the track, the 7yo, as per usual, came from off the pace. He ran on strongly in the closing stages of the race and got the verdict by a half over the favourite GREEN ARCHER (came from the rear). TITBITS The 3yo FAYE didn’t find the clearest of passages when running on from the backend of midfield to finish runner up in the MR72 Handicap over 1400m.
Inspired Taste Turffontein 17 February This was the meeting originally scheduled to take place on Saturday 16th February. The daughter of Soft Falling Rain GIN FIZZ was backed into the red to make a winning debut in the opening maiden juvenile plate over 1000m on Sunday and she went on to score accordingly. Taken straight to the front by Gavin Lerena, Mike De Kock’s charge was always travelling well. She only had to be pushed out over the final 400m and won going away by seven and a half. The stable of Mike De Kock were also on the mark with a very easy winner in the second, an assessment plate, when GREENER PASTURES registered her second career victory, Surprisingly the quickest of the three 1600m events, given that just four went to post, the Gimmethegreenlight filly raced at the back for most of the journey. She was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 400m marker and after quickly going clear, she won easing down by six and a quarter. Yet another to win very easily on this card was REGAL GRADUATION in the faster of the two 1400m events, a MR87 Handicap. Always handy, the daughter of Oratorio put her head in front as they approached the 200m pole and went on to score without any anxious moments from the running on PERFECT TIGRESS (lost 3 lengths and didn’t find a clear passage) by three and three quarters. Dream Start A maiden juvenile plate over 1000m got proceedings underway in Cape Town on Saturday and here we saw a smart performance from the newcomer MINNESOTA DREAM. Slowest into stride, the son of Visionaire raced a number of lengths off the pace at the back very early on. Patiently ridden by the experienced S’manga Khumalo though, Joey Ramsden’s charge steadily worked his way into contention. He struck the front 250m out and with some in hand won very cosily by three quarters. A MR72 Handicap was the only other race to be run over 1000m and in a time 1,46 seconds faster than that of Minnesota Dream, APOLLO ACE registered his second career victory. Sent off second in the betting market at 6/1, the 3yo son of What A Winter was soon positioned close
