Dalai's Promise - smart daughter of Potala Palace
PINNACLE STAKES at Turffontein this Saturday
A Promise Of Better Days
W
After being spoilt with an endless stream of high quality feature headlined racing that seemed to start somewhere in the height of the Cape Summer of Champions and roll through the Highveld and on to the heights of the KZN champions fest, we have hit something of ground zero as August month traditionally does on the calendar.
eaned off our decadent diet with some really entertaining non blacktype racing at Flamingo Park last weekend, we are now focussed on two R130 000 Pinnacle Stakes features on the Turffontein standside track on Saturday. Not that there is anything wrong with the quality of the contestants. The Bipot opener is a 1000m dash and not unexpectedly loaded with raw speed. While the field is a small one with only six runners, Bipot players may feel a bit nervous about bankering the SP top-rated Dalai’s Promise. But not for any other reason than she does return from an unplaced effort on Super Saturday, when she did not enjoy the Greyville polytrack and failed to feature - unning just under 6 lengths off Sunset Eyes. She is not the world’s happiest traveller if one looks back to her Cape summer campaign, and is a much better girl on home turf. The daughter of Potala Palace reeled off an impressive Vaal 1000m hattrick before travelling to Durban, and even though those victories were achieved against her own sex, she looks the
one to beat with her favourite jockey Muzi Yeni – staying loyal to her. The evergreen 7yo Donny G is never far off the action and seems to come good at this time of the year. He came back to form in August 2018 then reeled off a hat-trick of wins before finding it tough as he stepped up a league. A seven-time winner, he could enjoy the 2,5kgs off his back and find his winning habit again. Mount Keith is stablemate to the top-rated Dalai’s Promise and is an honest 6yo gelding. The son of Fencing Master is off his best form of a few months ago though and looks to have plenty to do in this line-up. Roy Magner’s Kahal topweight Prince Of Kahal is the standout current class in the race and blotted his deadly consistent copybook with unplaced efforts in two Gr1’s at his last two starts. That said, he was hardly disgraced with a two length deficit behind Pacific Trader in the Computaform Sprint and then 2,35 lengths off Chimichuri Run in the Tsogo Sun, when hampered at a strategic time of the race. The Equus Champion Sprinter for the 2015/16 season, the now
8yo Talktothestars has not won a race since storming to victory at Flamingo Park on 10 October 2016. While his recent second behind the well performed Life Is Good was his best effort in ages and built on his improvement graph, the 2016 Gr1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint winner only carries 48,5kgs and will probably think that he left his rider in the stalls. Something of a specialist over the minimum cut, the Great Britain mare Queen Of War is the second of the fairer sex contingent and enjoys a 4kgs claim courtesy of the talented Jeff Syster. While winless in close on a year, ownertrainer Grant Maroun may fancy her chances of earning a cheque. Her last win was over the course and distance and if she doesn’t give too much ground away at the jump, she could grab a back-end of the quartet cheque. Our ratings point to Dalai’s promise the industrious Muzi Yeni getting our Bipot off to a flyer. Best of the rest could be Donny G.
A General Poser?
Our Handicappers are always in the news. That’s just the way it works, it seems. Last week it was the publication of the revised and softer guidelines applicable to the assessment of races. Prior to that it was the blanket ten point merit rating increase. Now it’s a former SA Champion trainer tearing his hair out. “What am I going to do with him? Maybe the handicappers can help,” was Justin Snaith’s reply when asked by Gold Circle journalist Michael Clower as to when his ‘boom’ 3yo General Franco is going to run. This is the Frankel colt who looked a potential superstar when winning on debut in mid-April only to finish plumb last when odds-on for his only subsequent start the following month; slightly sore shins was the only plausible reason to emerge. The root of Snaith’s present quandary is that the handicappers have given the colt a rating of 102, a mark which he considers far too high. “Just have a look at what he beat -only two of the ten that finished behind him have won since – they have handicapped him on reputation and on what appeared in the papers. I can’t run him in a handicap off that mark – it would break his spirit.” A 2018 CTS Premier Yearling Sale chart topper, the R4 million Frankel colt was bought by leading bloodstock consultant John Freeman.
You Can Take Them Anywhere... There was a rare sight in the winner’s enclosure at Niigata in Japan on Sunday after the white thoroughbred Hayayakko had won the Gr3 Leopard Stakes – the country’s only Graded dirt race. The three-year-old colt, who was winning for the third time from nine starts, was providing owner Kaneko Makoto Holdings
with a poignant success following the death of their sire sensation Deep Impact earlier in the week. Held up towards the rear, Hayayakko headed favourite Derma Louvre, fourth in the UAE Derby at Meydan, to strike by a neck. Winning rider Hironobu Tanabe said: “It is a very rare opportunity to ride a white racehorse and it’s a historical moment.”
Horses officially registered as white are extremely rare. At the time of his Classic Chase win at Warwick in 2016 Russe Blanc was said to be the only white horse in training in Britain. The Rathmor-bred Gran Blanco attracted plenty of worldwide interest in 2011 when becoming the first ever white thoroughbred foal born in South Africa.

Greeff Off To A Flyer Boom Boom Lerena The Alan Greeff machine maintained the momentum from last season with four winners at Fairview on Friday, including a gutsy win by the Twice Over mare Studio Blues in the non blacktype R110 000 Wedgewood Handicap. There isn’t more form outfit in the country and the Greeff team delivered the goods again to get the new term off to a flyer. Only eight runners faced the starter for the first feature of the season and Ridgemont Highlands rider Greg Cheyne rode a well-judged race on the favourite Studio Blues who was stepping up to the 2400m for the first time. Ryan Munger slowed things down up front on the free-striding Flying Squadron, but Cheyne was stalking and aware and he released Studio Blues early with a winning effort. With Flying Squadron fading late, it was the ever consistent Just My Style who ranged up dangerously down the inside. But confidence is a winning tonic and Greg Cheyne had judged it perfectly as Studio Blues stayed on strongly to win by a half length in a time of 156,49 secs. Just My Style is often a PA banker and she also plugged on well to grab second and three lengths ahead of longshot Exclusivity in third. Studio Blues has won 5 of 20 starts with 7 places and stakes of R353 375. A Daytona Stud-bred daughter of Twice Over (Observatory) she is out of the twice winning Six Blue Notes (Qui Danzig), who raced for Glen Kotzen. Cheyne grabbed a Greeff double on the day with the Jackson colt Go Goodfellow winning the opener. Charles Ndlovu and Wayne Agrella each rode the balance of the champion yard’s quartet.
The Oracy gelding Two Guns provided the Lerena family with a memorable moment at Flamingo Park on Saturday when he went every inch of the 2200m to win the R110 000 Diamond Stayers. The 5yo relishes the Kimberley sand and he made it five wins from six starts in the Northern Cape, winning under apprentice Dylan Lerena, and owned in partnership by, amongst others, the winning rider’s cousins – top boxer Kevin and the winner’s former trainer, Stephen. It was a polished and confident rider from the from by Dylan, whose grandfather Spike rode successfully and became one of the country’s leading trainers. His uncle Tex was a successful jockey and is today still the Chairman of the SA Jockeys Association. Tex’s son Gavin has become a world-class rider, while cousin Brandon is an up-andcoming talent in his own right. For trainer Sarel von Willingh Smit, the victory was the first leg of a feature double. Young Lerena never panicked and kept his mount well balanced to stave off a late challenge by 44-1 outsider Assisted Take Off by a neck in a time of 150,65 secs. The 33-1 Calls To Heaven was finishing fastest of all under Kabelo Matsunyane to grab third – a further neck away. The favourite Paddington failed to fire and finished out of the money and ten lengths behind. A genuine Flamingo Park specialist, Two Guns has won 6 races with 2 places from 25 starts for stakes of R287 500. He was bred by Klawervlei Stud and is a son of Oracy (Zabeel) out of the two-time winning Western Winter mare, Hidden Nest. On a buzzing afternoon, the local Pick 6 reached R2 394 075.
First Ride - First Win
T
Sporting hugs and camaraderie marked the running of the 2019 R110 000 Qatar National Stud Apprentice Cup at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.
he relationship between the SA Jockey Academy and the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club is celebrated annually with the no crop apprentice dash down the KZN capital city straight and, while outside of the exotic bets, the race attracts plenty of support and interest. While trainers Paul Lafferty and Michael Roberts saddled five of the eight runners between them,it was Ashburton trainer Duncan Howells who celebrated the 28-1 winner Hamronica, who got the better of the
5-2 favourite Celebration Rock after an incident-filled tussle in the final 200m. Having his first ride, apprentice Abdullah Rashid rode the Backworth Stud-bred chestnut with the hands and the son of Byword had too much in hand as he held Celebration Rock to a 0,30 lengths margin in a time of 63 secs. The top two riders hugged and embraced in a show of rare sportsmanship! Harmonica has now won two races from six starts for stakes of R137 000.
Get The Picture?
A Flame Burns Bright
The important role of Kimberley in the broader scheme of our racing economy as a second career option for many horses was underlined again. This was courtesy of the former Dennis Drier charge Seattle Skyline who trotted up as the talking horse of the afternoon to win the R200 000 Flamingo Mile unextended. Starting at 18-10 after some inspired support, Wesley Marwing was given an armchair ride on the 6yo, who has now won 3 of his 4 starts on the sand – pulling up lame at his only unplaced effort. While he won two races out of the Drier Summerveld base, the gelding wasn’t delivering the killer blow and showed that he could be a Horse Of The Year contender in these parts on Saturday. He is a reformed character on the sand – and if he stays sound, he looks a horse for the black book. He won unextended by 2,75 lengths in a time 98,56 secs to give Klawervlei Stud and Sarel von Willingh Smit a feature double. The 36-1 shot Happy Pills came out of the pack to beat Phil’s Power (8-1) into third. The former Gr1 winner Mac de Lago, racing off an 85 with a career high 114 registered, ran a poor race to finish over 24 lengths back and confirmed trainer Corrie Lensley’s thoughts that he may well be more effective at the Vaal on the grass with his daisy-cutting action inhibiting his sand ambitions. Seattle Skyline was purchased for R140 000 by top KZN trainer Dennis Drier off the 2015 Emperors Palace National 2yo Sale. He is a son of the now Clifton Stud-based Mambo In Seattle (Kingmambo) out of the five-time winning Fort Wood mare, Isle Of Skye. He has won 5 races with 14 places from 25 starts for stakes of R569 750. This race wrapped up the Bipot, which paid a healthy R8847,40.
Trainer Cliffie Miller celebrated his ninth Northern Cape Champion trainer title at the Kimberley Racing Awards on Friday evening and started the new season in style with Bright Flame a runaway winner of the R135 000 WSB Sprint. Sadly officialdom again failed to show the professionalism and grab the opportunities to publicise the titbits of good news for the racing public – like who was the Horse Of The Year and who won what at the Kimberley Awards on Friday evening. What we can deduce from the stats was that Miller was the champion trainer and the only local to breach the R3 million mark in stakes. The days of weekends off and publishing results when they are history on a Monday morning are long gone in this instant media world. Except in racing, possibly. For the Hollywoodbets-sponsored Cliffie Miller and jockey Collen Storey the opening day proved a royal start as they registered a double, with the 5yo Kildonan mare Misty Heath grabbing an overdue second career victory in the third. The WSB Sprint was a speed charged 1000m spectacle and the 5yo Bright Flame (11-1) is living proof again that we probably shouldn’t scratch where it’s not itching. After winning over the he was tried over a bit further – but is a mean prospect down the straight. He exploded clear in the final 200m to beat the favourite Our Moon Shadow by 6 lengths in a time of 57,09 secs. The winner’s fairer sex stablemate Burgundy Rose was a quarter length back in third, with Basilius fading under his 63,5kg welterweight to run fourth. An R80 000 National Yearling Sale purchase, the Riyo Std-bred Bright Flame is by Sail From Seattle (Gone West) out of the one-time winning Strike Smartly mare, Strike The Flame. He has won 6 races with 8 places from 22 starts for stakes of R370 050. A great start to the season was characterised by a good crowd and a nice vibe. Maybe we should be racing more often here on a Saturday.
Transport Was Ready
T
The withdrawal of KZN-based horses on Saturday morning from the Flamingo Park racemeeting as a result of a lack of transport appears to have been based purely on commercial considerations.
he loss of any carded runner impacts on turnover and while the overall effect on Flamingo Park’s big day was minimal, it was a pity to not have any KZN competition – particularly with Kum Naidoo having enjoyed success at the venue in past seasons. He had no runners carded. South Africa’s leading transport contractor Peter Choice explained that he had quoted trainers prior to final acceptances for the meeting for a partially filled sixteen berth truck from Summerveld to Kimberley. “It’s economies of scale in terms of providing the float. The truck wasn’t full but I provided a quotation and required the account to be paid up front. You will appreciate that service providers can’t act as a banker. It’s that simple. I see Mr Naidoo didn’t accept with his entries and this obviously skewed the costs for the other guys. I was all set and planned to fulfil my obligation to the customers,” said Peter.

Australia Move – De Kock Explains
D
Mike de Kock announced on his website on Monday that he and son Mathew will be setting up a satellite yard at the Cranbourne Racing Centre outside of Melbourne, Victoria.
e Kock said that his South African racing operation will remain the stable’s main base for the time being, to be employed as a platform to feed the Australian stable with horses from South Africa. He explained: “We are doing this as a pre-emptive move for our exports protocols opening up, we are confident this will be happening soon. We have been doing things the other way around, focusing on importing horses from Australia. Soon we’ll be exporting from South Africa at an exchange rate of roughly 10 rand to the Australian dollar, which is a great opportunity and makes good business sense. We will also be supporting the Australian
market as we have been doing.” De Kock said that Australian Racing and officials at Cranbourne have bent over backwards to accommodate the venture. He commented: “They have been unbelievably helpful. They are building us new stables with a number of other benefits included. The training facilities are excellent with everything from treadmills to good tracks. “We’ve been going to Australia for a number of years and Mathew will soon be leaving to gain work experience in their industry, to pave the way. he Blitz meeting will always comprise seven races and will combine into one “race meeting” the best South African and international races in a mid-afternoon timeframe. Five multi-race bets will be in operation on each Blitz meeting Place Accumulator (Races 1 to 7), Pick 6 (Races 2 to 7), Jackpot (Races 3 to 6), Pick 3 (Races 5 to 7) and a Daily Double (Races 6 and 7). The aim of Blitz meetings is to take most, if not all, of the best-quality races from South Africa, the UK, France, Singapore and Hong Kong in mid-afternoon and combine them into a notional race meeting that TAB customers can bet on.
It’s an exciting concept and marks the first time that TAB has put the cream of local and international races into one daily basket that customers can take a range of bets on. Betting turnovers highlight that the R1-unit Rolling Double on all consecutive races at South African race meetings holds little appeal for the majority of TAB customers nowadays. Consequently, Rolling Doubles on local races will fall away from Friday 9 August and be replaced by a Daily Double with a R6 unit. The first leg of the Daily Double on South African meetings will always be the race after the first Jackpot leg. Thus, on a nine-race programme the Daily Double will be on Races 6 and

Muzi Yeni writes that his career has spanned over 14 years. During this period, I have experienced a gradual rise on the Jockey log, coming closer and closer to the top with each season. I would like to believe that it was made possible purely by hard work and dedication on my part, without expecting for anything to be handed to me on a silver platter.
I do my share of work. I too get up at the crack of dawn to go ride work on the horses I ask from the trainers. It has only been this past season that I have had the assistance of agents to help me with booking my rides for the Johannesburg and Durban centres. Otherwise I book my own rides after track work and still continue to ride a full card for the day.

7 with the Bipot starting on Race 2, the Place Accumulator on Race 3 and the Pick 6 and Jackpot on Races 4 and 5 respectively. The new Daily Double should put the spotlight on the big race at most local meetings because it will normally incorporate the main event. That coupled with a R6 unit, which should ensure significant payouts, will hopefully re-energise the bet and renew its appeal to TAB customers. The new Daily Double will also be added to the betting menu for selected international race meetings screened on Tellytrack. When the Daily Double is offered on such international race meetings, it will always be on the last two races with the exception of Dubai, Mauritius, Kenya and Zimbabwe. Those four countries will be treated identically to South African meetings with the race after the first Jackpot leg forming the first leg of the Daily Double. - Press release by TAB on 5 August

All of this on top of travelling around the country every single day. I would like to also take this opportunity to thank all the people who have supported me and helped me to reach this level. I have always shown my appreciation during the year. I acknowledge that there are a large number of trainers as well as others in the game that are behind me and I will forever be grateful to them. My gratitude should not be overshadowed by a single interview that was given in a moment of intense emotion. Regarding comments that I am a sore loser, I would like to emphasise the fact that my comments and

As regards the stayer category, the winning horse will be at the discretion of the voting panel. This decision was taken as the only Grade 1 race in SA is the SA Derby, which would mean that this should be the obvious winner based on a single run. This would also have excluded fillies and mares. The awards will be held at a function on Tuesday 13 August.

sentiments have absolutely nothing to do with Mr Hewitson as an individual, but rather with the general state of affairs leading up to the conclusion of the season. Had it been any other person in Mr Hewitson’s position, the sentiment would still be the same. I bear the champion no ill will and indeed congratulate him on his victory. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve enjoyed a long career. It has not, however, always been pleasant. There have been many instances where I have been subjected to blatant bullying by my peers and authority figures alike, details of which have never been made public. I am not bitter or entitled by any means. I just happen to believe in a system of fairness. I will, however, continue to be

Grant van Niekerk
T
It’s been almost a year now since the ‘new kid’ on the Hong Kong block made a memorable debut in front of the second highest Sha Tin crowd in 20 years.
wo winners on Grant van Niekerk’s first day at work in front of 74722 screaming race fans and some of his already well established colleagues, raised a few eyebrows. “You can arrive here with all the accolades, credentials, championships and Gr1 winner credits from your home country. That all means sweet nothing when you step off the plane and into the pressure cooker of racing in Hong Kong.” That was the warm welcome from Hong Kong-based Irish jockey Neil Callan in response to a question on a racing television show as to whether he’d heard about the ‘new kid’ from South Africa. Fast forward eleven months with thirty one winners on the board and a highly respectable ninth on the final jockeys’ log, including a breakthrough Gr3 Premier Cup victory in June on Flying Thunder, and the 28 year old Capetonian can feel decidedly satisfied with his achievement in the most testing race arena on earth. Grant arrived at his old homeground of Kenilworth last Saturday for his only racemeeting in South Africa this visit. “I really am keen to stay fit and also to show my face at Kenilworth. It’s a special racecourse to me and I was fortunate to win two races – despite at one stage thinking that I had made a fool of myself as it seemed to take forever! It was extremely quiet on course, but there were some staunch punters who greeted me. And it was good to greet the officials, staff and the trainers, owners and my colleagues. As they say, there’s no place like home and I was made to feel so welcome,” he said sincerely as he packed his bags for a short family holiday on the Wild Coast this week. Grant took three rides and picked up a R1000 ‘dozen strikes’ sanction, courtesy of the NHA’s new cash generator whip legislation, before he won on Sleeping Single for Justin Snaith. He also won the last on Machiavelli in the Marsh Shirtliff silks for his former boss, Candice BassRobinson, with whom he parted company by mutual agreement in February 2017. We asked him to summarise, in layman’s terms, what the difference was between Sha Tin and Kenilworth. “Coming back and riding here is like watching a movie from normal speed to slow motion The racing in Hong Kong is fast paced and split second stuff. You need to be wide awake. You
need to anticipate. You need to get into position. You need to be thinking quickly every milli-second. I’m not saying that racing here at home is any less tough or dangerous, but Hong Kong race-riding adds an edge. The pace is always on too!” Grant said that he had left for Hong Kong and the new challenges that faced him with a positive approach. “It was always important to make a good start in Hong Kong and I did that with two winners at my first meeting. That opened doors for me. Then things went quiet in the middle, but I ended the season strongly, so there’s lots to look forward to.” He said his riding had raised a notch or two up to a more consistent level now – a key factor, he points out. “There are some world class jockeys in Hong Kong, but just like anywhere else it’s all about getting chances. Their handicapping system is really good though, so there are always opportunities to be found.” The talented Grant has mainly ridden for the likes of John Moore, Frankie Lor, Danny Shum and Tony Millard. He ascribes his overall success to being focussed on conveying a professional image and riding like a professional. “The way one carries oneself is importantly. Look smart – whether at work or after races when mixing with the important people. Be courteous and respectful. It’s nothing different to what we are taught at the SA Jockey Academy. It’s just vitally important to always be at one’s best in this competitive no quarter given world.”
Grant says that everything about Hong Kong is ‘world class’. He points out that the policing is strict and professional. He says the sport is marketed well, too. “A Wednesday meeting feels like the Sun Met. The vibe on course is unbelievable.” He concedes that he gets homesick
and misses his family and the beautiful sight of Table Mountain. But having Aldo Domeyer around, who started out with him from Day 1 in the academy at Summerveld, and lending support, was helpful. “He’s a good friend and we try and encourage and help each other. Lyle Hewitson is arriving soon and he should do very well
Grant’s Early Days He joined the SA Jockey Academy in January 2007, alongside Gareth Wright, JP Van Der Merwe, Tshwaro Appie, Athandiwe Mgudlwa and Aldo Domeyer. Grant’s first ride was aboard the Glen Kotzen-trained Combat Leader at Clairwood on 11 June 2008, where he finished second. Two meetings later, he rode his first winner at Clairwood Park on 25 June on the very same Combat Leader – at only his fourth ride. His first posting was with Riaan van Reenen and then he moved to Glen Kotzen, before finding a home with the powerful Mike Bass Racing outfit. That was in July 2013 and brought with it a sponsorship from Kuda Insurance. Grant says that the move was the turning point in his career. Inara gave Grant his first maiden Gr1 victory in the Paddock Stakes on 10 January 2015 and followed up with a second Gr1 in the Majorca Stakes on Met day that year. He would go on to win five Gr1’s on the Drakenstein bred Trippi filly.
with his attitude and talent.” Looking ahead, Grant is determined to improve and keep his head high. He is adamant that he is not going to be ‘one of the battlers’. When taxed on one thing he’d like to change about life in Hong Kong, he thinks long and hard before suggesting ‘maybe the food’. “We are spoilt here in Cape Town with Mom’s home cooking, roasts and great food. I’m not sure the Hong Kong cuisine appeals to my palate after my established South African diet. But I have gotten used to it!” Grant van Niekerk is the only South African rider with a full season in Hong Kong Kong. Both Aldo Domeyer and Lyle Hewitson have six month contracts. Grant says that he can’t wait to get going and next season the likes of Flying Thunder, Big Party and Harmony Victory are all rides that should be worth following. And will he be back for the Met? “I’m a Hong Kong Jockey Club rider and any overseas engagement is subject to their sanction. They will also only consider application if it involves one of the top 100 rated races internationally,” he added.
Aldo Could Bolt Home
Grant and Aldo Domeyer fly out of Cape Town for Hong Kong on 17 August. The new season starts on 1 September at Sha Tin. The traditional pre-season carnival will be held on 24 August at Sha Tin and Penfold Park. The Jockeys’ Sprint is a highlight of the Carnival and the race has been dominated by the ‘Mauritian Magician’ Karis Teetan in recent years. Grant finished second last year and as Teetan will be in Japan to ride in the World Super Jockeys Series this year the publicity blurb suggests a new star could emerge in the form of one of the new young faces – the likes of Lyle Hewitson, Regan Bayliss or Alfred Chan, who are participating for the first time. But have they even heard of the Cape’s own ‘Usain Bolt’, Aldo Domeyer? Douglas Whyte has been engaged to be the starter.

Agent Races On
Brett Crawford’s Undercover Agent will not take up stud duties at Klawervlei this season as originally intended. The son of Captain Al’s owners have opted to race the 5yo for another season. A R325 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate, Undercover Agent is a winner of 7 races with 6 places from 18 starts and stakes of over R5, 7 million. He was scratched from the recent Champions Cup and his last run last season was an unplaced effort in the Gr1 Gold Challenge.
Bonji Best Aron Xabendlini is vastly more experienced than his fellow participants in the KZN workrider’s series. He wrapped up all three legs of the competition in a tight finish on Dennis Drier’s charge Liquidity in the first at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday. He got the better of Tristan Mustard who went down by the narrowest of margins on Kom Naidoo’s runner Juniper Lane. Mustard is the grandson of exjockey Leslie Mustard, successful on the Des Rich-trained Lightning Shot in the 1977 July.

It’s possible that Salouen could even make a return in the Longines Grosser Preis Von Berlin in Germany on Sunday.

Their Loss - Our Gain Piere Strydom’s sojourn in Mauritius has come to an abrupt end following the termination of his contract with the Rameshwar Gujadhur yard by mutual agreement. At an inquiry this week, he was found guilty of failing to ride Man From Seattle to the satisfaction of the Stewards in the second race on 20 June. He was suspended for 6 days (or six weeks equivalent in SA) and fined Rs 50,000 – the latter sum is the equivalent of approximately ZAR20 700. Strydom told the Sporting Post that he is looking forward to returning home to his family.

In a race where the trainer engaged a jockey to ride without his consent, and the jockey bailed, both were fined. Tara Laing was fined R1000 ito Rule 55.1.1 for declaring Lyle Hewitson to ride Samba With Suzie in the Fairview eighth on 29 July. Then Hewitson was fined R1500 for failing to fulfil his riding engagement on the same horse. Then Samba With Suzie was scratched. Everybody lost out – and ironically, Muzi Yeni won the race.
Dawdle The sixth race at Kenilworth on Saturday was a walk in the park in more ways than one. Winner Chrome Yellow (Greg Cheyne) dictated matters without a challenge from his four opponents and won the 2000m event in 138.41 secs. Acting Chair of Stipes Nick Shearer explained to the Sporting Post that Greg Cheyne on the pacemaker was riding the race to suit himself. “Had he gone quicker, that would have suited his opposition. The guys behind him were also tied to their instructions. So while the race was run in a ridiculous time, it always looked on the cards. We had no reason to talk to the jockeys.”
Silvano, who was recently crowned Champion Sire in South Africa for a fourth time, produced a pair of winners at Kenilworth on Saturday. The 3yo Sachdev ran on strongly to win first-time out over 1200m for trainer Justin Snaith. Bred by the Normandy Stud, the gelded Sachdev was a R1 300 000 buy from the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.Out of the Kabool mare Quetta, Sachdev is a three-parts brother to Silvano sired Gr1 Investec Cape Derby winner Bravura. Another Silvano so Machiavelli won for a second time in just seven starts. Bred by Maine Chance Farms, the lightly raced 4yo won as he liked. He is bred on the same Silvano/Al Mufti cross as Gr1 winners Al Sahem, Bold Silvano and Kings Gambit. The sire of 2018/19 Equus Award nominees Hawwaam and Silvano’s Pride, Silvano currently boasts 88 stakes winners, 22 Gr1 winners and 6 South African champions.

Thoroughbred racing lost one of its greatest stallions with the death of Japanese superstar Deep Impact.
he son of Sunday Silence was just 17 when he was euthanized following an operation . The greatest son of his outstanding sire, Deep Impact was produced by the Alzao mare, Wind In Her Hair, who had won the Gr1 Aral Pokal and who ran second to champion Balanchine in the 1994 Epsom Oaks. Wind In Her Hair proved an exceptional mare, also producing US Gr2 winner, Veil Of Avalon, and Deep Impact’s stakes winning own brother, Black Tide -the latter going on to be Japan’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2012 and siring Horse Of The Year, Kitasan Black. Wind In Her Hair is also third dam of Japanese Gr1 winner and champion, Rey De Oro (King Kamehameha) and granddam of Gr2 Sandown Mile winner and useful sire, Jeremy (Danehill Dancer). Deep Impact traced back in female line to one of the greatest mares in the stud book in the form of 1000 Guineas runner up, Feola (Friar Marcus). The latter is also ancestress of such top racehorses and or sires as Round Table, Pulpit, Nashwan, Tale Of The Cat, Johannesburg, Unfuwain and Nayef. Deep Impact, who won 12 of his 14 outings in total, won his first seven races in a row, with this streak including all three legs of Japan’s Triple Crown in 2005, with Deep Impact landing the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) by 2.5 lengths, the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) by five lengths, and the Kikuka sho (Japanese St Leger) by two lengths.
Silence Is Golden Remarkably, sons of Sunday Silence were 1-2-3 in both the Satsuki Sho and Kikua Sho. The colt went on to win five of six starts at four (including the Gr1 Japan Cup), and was third in the 2006 Gr1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, before being disqualified after a banned sample was found in a sample. When victorious in the 2006 Japan Cup, Deep Impact accounted for Pop Rock (Helissio) and Delta Blues (Dance In The Dark), who had finished second and first respectively
in the same season’s Gr1 Emirates Melbourne Cup. Timeform gave Deep Impact a rating of 134 in 2006, and rated him above such notable performers that year as Invasor (Horse Of The Year), David Junior (Champion), Hurricane Run (Horse Of The Year), Shirocco (four time Gr1 winner), and Pride (Champion Stakes). However, it was as a stallion that Deep Impact really made his mark. Champion Sire in Japan for the past seven years in a row, Deep Impact has also headed that country’s 2YO Sires List the last eight occasions, dominating the Japanese sire ranks to an extent only rivalled by his own sire, Sunday Silence, in recent years. Deep Impact had been responsible for 136 stakes winners, including over 100 group winners. The Triple Crown winner exerted a remarkable influence on Japanese classic races. Deep Impact's daughters, Marcellina (2011), Gentildonna (2012), Ayusan (2013), Harp Star (2014), and Gran Alegria (2019) won the classic Oka Sho (equivalent of 1000 Guineas). Deep Impact's sons have won the Japanese classic, the Satsuki Sho, (twice thanks to Dee Majesty (2016) and Al Ain (2017)), and the Tokyo Yushun has fallen to a son of Deep Impact five times thus far -via Deep Brillante, Kizuna, Makahiki ,Wagnerian and Roger Barows.
Fairer Sex His daughters, Gentildonna (2012), Mikki Queen (2015), Sinhalite (2016) and Loves Only You (2019) have won the Oaks (Yushun Himba) four times and Satono Diamond and Fierement have won the Kikuka sho. His influence has also extended to outside of Japan, with major races won by the progeny of Deep Impact including the 2000 Guineas, Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby), Hong Kong Cup, Dubai Turf (twice), Prix d’Ispahan, Emirates Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Racing Post Trophy, and George Ryder Stakes. The champion appears again on track to top the Japanese Sires List in 2019, with Deep Impact’s progeny having earned more than double the total of runner up, Heart’s Cry, already this year. Remarkably, the top three on the Japanese General Sires List are all sons of Sunday Silence.
Danon Platina - Champion son of Deep Impact Deep Impact also enjoyed British feature race success on Saturday, when his regally bred daughter Love So Deep (her dam Soinlovewithyou is a three-parts sister to Investec Derby winner Ruler Of The World, and ½ sister to champion and Drakenstein Stud’s successful sire Duke Of Marmalade), won the British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes at Newmarket.

all over the world, Deep Impact has also made his, well, impact, on the Leading First Crop Sires List in Japan for 2019. The Japan Cup/Triple Crown winner is the sire of the first three stallions on Japanese’s first crop Sires List thus far, with Kizuka leading from Real Impact and World Ace. Another son of Deep Impact, Spielberg - a Gr1 winning half-brother to Wilgerbosdrift based sire, Flower Alley- is currently the tenth leading First Crop Sire in Japan by earnings. A Choice Week!
DECEASED Arrowfield champion stallion Redoute’s Choice (Danehill, Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad) enjoyed another Group victory in Europe to put the icing on the cake of a super last week. Following Danceteria’s Gr1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preiss (Bayerisches Zuchtrennen) triumph in Germany, 4YO mare Enbihaar (Redoute’s Choice-Chanterelle, by Trempolino) added a second Gr2 to her resumé, with a convincing victory for trainer John Gosden in Goodwood’s Gr2 Lillie Langtry Stakes over 2800m on Saturday. Now the winner of 4 of her 7 starts, also including the Listed Warwick Stakes at Goodwood, the lightly raced mare is also the winner of the Gr2 Lancashire Oaks 2400m. Enbihaar is a half-sister to Gr2-placed Silent Attack and stakes-placed Bolete. There is a strong possibility the Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned mare could line up in a new Gr1 event run at Longchamp on Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe day.

South Africa by the well-performed Danon Platina, Japan’s Champion 2YO Colt of 2014. Remarkably, Danon Platina is one of six sons or daughters of Deep Impact who were named a champion in Japan at two. Safe to say, with a large number of two-year-olds, not to mention some exceptionally well related yearlings, yet to represent him, the final chapter in the Deep Impact story appears a long way from being completed.
New Age Sales THE POPULAR Inglis Digital Online Auctions will move to a bimonthly schedule effective immediately following successive record sales. In a stunning July auction completed last Thursday night, a southern hemisphere record gross for an Online Thoroughbred Auction was achieved, with A$2,246,300 traded. The sale gross eclipsed the previous record of A$1,751,650 set at the June auction. Stakes-winning filly Kinky Boom (Spirit of Boom) and O’Reilly mare Guelder – in foal to Zoustar – were equal sale toppers, selling for A$150,000 each. Sheamus Mills Bloodstock bought Kinky Boom from McEvoy Mitchell Racing while Greenhaven Park Stud was the winning bidder on the Musk Creek Farm-offered Guelder. In total, two horses sold for A$100,000 or more and seven for A$60,000 or more. This brings to 91 the number of sales for A$50,000 or more since 2018. Based off recent successes, overall demand and significant client feedback, the Inglis Digital Online Auctions will now occur twice per month.

Turffontein 28 July A maiden juvenile plate over 1400m got proceedings underway on the old stand side track on Sunday and here victory went to the well supported newcomer SUMMER PUDDING. Sent off a clear favourite at 16/10, this daughter of Silvano was soon up handy. She ran on strongly at the business end of the race and after getting the better of the form horse ZODIAC PRINCESS 50m from home, she won going away. The two 1160m races on the card were both maiden events and in the faster of these CAPTAIN FLYNT opened his account. Another to race handy, Alec Laird’s charge commenced battle with INSIDE POLITICS 150m out and after a thrilling tussle he got the verdict by a neck. The two 1800m races were also both maiden plates and quicker home here was PAX ROMANA when causing an upset in the boy’s division. Sent off as the rank outsider of the eight horse party at 44/1, Paul Peter’s charge was positioned at the back turning for home. He put his head in front going through the 300m and belying his two previous racecourse appearances, he cruised clear to score by five. TITBITS Positioned at the back when the twelve runners swung for home, DANCEWITHTHEDRAGON fairly flew in the closing stages when getting up late to open her account in the girl’s division of the maiden1800m.

Fairview 29 July Three of the eight races on Monday’s poly track card were run over 1600m and in the fastest of these, a MR72 Handicap, the 3yo IN A PERFECT WORLD gained his fourth win from just ten starts. Content to amble along in the rear early on, Alan Greeff ’s charge quickened best of all at the top of the short home straight and won going away after striking the front 100m from home. They also ran three races over 1300m and stopping the clock in the fastest time amongst these was the Alan Greeff trained ELUSIVE DIVA in the MR64 Handicap. She raced a length and a quarter clear for most of the journey before asserting her authority in the straight to score by five. The Greeff trained MIO GRANDE in the maiden juvenile plate over 1600m was the best bet on the card for most and he didn’t let down his supporters. Another to race clear throughout, Mio Grande ran on strongly over the final 400m and won without any anxious moments by two. TITBITS Always handy in what soon became a strung out field, SUN UP bolted clear after striking the front 60m from home when winning the MR64 Handicap over 1300m by four.

Content to race at the back of the six for most of the journey, St John’s Gray’s charge finished best of all and got up 150m from home to beat his stable companion MANITOBA going away. They also ran two races over 1450m and stopping the clock in the faster time here was the 3yo LIGHTHEARTED when winning the MR71 Handicap.
