Gr2 Post Merchants winner La Bella Mia has the gate speed
Gr3 SPRING SPREE STAKES at Turffontein this Saturday
T
With only 25% of the field having run in the past month, fitness could be key to the outcome of our first graded stakes feature of the new racing season at Turffontein on Saturday.
he R250 000 Gr3 Spring Spree Stakes is a 1200m handicap run on the draw-sensitive inside track and is a traditional season starting-point for many. Distance suited and very talented, the lightly raced Bold Eagle is the SP top-rated runner in the line-up and looks set to regain his 2yo salad days when he reeled off three wins from three starts – including a dual stakes strike. Now with the Geoff Woodruff yard, the obviously smart gelding has not won again in his seven subsequent starts. He did stay on well behind Singfonico at Turffontein nine weeks ago and could come up trumps running fresh with a handy galloping weight. The Durban Merchants winner La Bella Mia is a speedy sort who found the weight-for-age terms of the Mercury Sprint a touch too much last time. She should enjoy this track and has the gate speed to challenge under the bang in-form Muzi Yeni.
The Var entire Valbonne has drawn wide out and looks to have plenty to do. The 2017 winner and former champion sprinter Will Pays has not won in over a year and looks to have it all to do from a wide draw on current form. The very capable 6yo Zouaves comes off a break of 11 weeks and is at his best over slightly further. The same applies to the rather enigmatic Doosra, whose wide draw is a deterrent. He has not run in 15 weeks. A promising 3yo of last term, Russian Prince reeled off three smarts wins at the Vaal before chasing Gr1 winner Van Halen home in the Man O’War Sprint. He has been rested 12 weeks since pulling up lame after his last start at Greyville. The very quick Down To Zero showed his typical speed last time when finishing under two lengths behind surprise winner Pretty Penny. He has a wide draw to overcome
and is probably more effective over the shorter sprint. A genuine and honest sort, Prince Of Kahal finally put it all together to register a sixth career win last time in a four horse field. A course and distance winner, he could prove to be the value in a tricky race. Clever Guy ran on well to win an MR 96 Handicap over the Vaal 1200m last time out and while he has failed to feature at this track previously, could pay to include in bigger perms. Social Order would ordinarily prefer a bit more ground to show his best form but has run on well over this trip and could prove to be a quartet kicker if he pitches up in the mood to race.

Now a 7yo, Angel’s Power is the fourth of the Azzie quartet and has a solid record in this race – with second cheques in 2016 and 2017, followed by a fourth placing behind Chimichuri Run last year. With a more favourable draw this time
round, he could conceivably place again if things go his way. Bella Mia has plenty of speed, but Bold Eagle could be the one to be with and find his winning act again. Prince Of Kahal looks the value.
Race Closure – TAB Takes Action Disciplinary action is being taken following the late closure of TAB betting pools on several Australian races last Saturday morning. Betting pools on four races from Australia - Toowoomba races 2 and 3 and Belmont races 7 and 8 - were not closed timeously. A full inquiry yesterday revealed that neither the tote betting system operator nor the raceday auditor on duty had followed standard operating procedures in the wake of the loss of communication links with Tabcorp in Australia on Saturday morning. The raceday auditor has been suspended with immediate effect pending a formal disciplinary hearing this week. Raceday auditors have the primary responsibility for ensuring betting pools are closed at the start of a race. “There’s no evidence of any malpractice,” said a TAB spokesperson. “It’s a case of the individuals involved failing to following the procedures and rules in the chaos that followed losing the communication links with Tabcorp. That said it’s totally unacceptable and the necessary disciplinary action will be taken. TAB will issue an update later this week when that process has been completed.”

It's Just Highlighting The Problems!
Charles Ndlovu gets Meryl up late to beat Raven Girl and Wayne Agrella on Studio Blues
Maiden Handicaps were introduced on a trial basis on the Highveld recently. Do they make sense? Why opt to go this route? In the absence of any information from Phumelela, we are left in the dark.
JOCKEY CLUB STAKES (L) Fairview last Friday
Salute ‘Prince’ Charles!
A
The smart Tiger Ridge mare Meryl benefitted from a terrific ride by the Winning Formsponsored Charles Ndlovu to clinch the second stakes victory of her career in the shadow of the Fairview post on Friday.
past winner of Listed Devon Air Stakes and Gr1 placed, Meryl overcame a wide draw and traffic problems to score a gutsy win at her second start in the Eastern Cape. Her dashing 1100m prep earlier this month gave hint of her wellbeing, and Charles Ndlovu made no mistakes on the former Dean Kannemeyer-trained mare. Settled in midfield after overcoming her awful draw, the Sporting Post toprated Meryl (6-1) was climbing all
over them at the 350m and despite a check and switch late in the contest, the chestnut found a surging finishing effort to catch the free-running Raven Girl in the final stride to win by a short head in a time of 122,58 secs. Raven Girl looked a winner everywhere but the line and shouldn’t be long in winning again. Studio Blues was a half length away in third, with Delia’s Delight completing the R9 385 quartet, with just over a length completing the quartet. Bred by newly crowned SA
Champion breeders Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Meryl is a daughter of Tiger Ridge (Storm Cat) out of the four-time winning Rose Lipped Maiden (Fort Wood). Meryl was purchased for R450 000 on the National Yearling Sale and has won 4 races with 4 places from 14 starts for stakes of R435 600. Alan Greeff confirmed that she will stay in training for the season. Charles Ndlovu, who doesn’t ride the stable elects every day, has made a famous start to the season – his six winners to date coming at a 23% win strike-rate. His place strike-rate is 26%. Alan Greeff saddled a treble on the afternoon – the other two ridden by Teaque Gould and Greg Cheyne, respectively. Please read more about Charles Ndlovu on page 9
MJ Breaks The Ice
I
The promising Oratorio colt Cavalieri gave former champion jockey MJ Odendaal the first winner of his training career when the 3yo got off the mark at just his second start at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.
n the same season that his good friend Doug Whyte launches his own training career in Hong Kong, Odendaal has 24 horses – half of which he says he owns himself – at his Summerveld yard and Sunday’s victory was a great start for the charismatic former jockey. He was champion jockey in 2004/5 and rode six winners on an afternoon for Gary Alexander. MJ also rode abroad – in Hong Kong, Mauritius and Macau. After breaking nineteen bones
and having twenty-four operations, he called it a day from the saddle in 2014. He was then very sick for six months. His wife Taryn is still on the farm and will relocate to KZN when their son Ty completes his primary schooling at the end of the year. Owners Johnny Peter, Preggie Anappa and Colin Govindasamy have given him a flying start. He also paid tribute to his vastly experienced assistant Braam Malherbe. Sporting his trademark long hair, MJ kept interviewer Paul Lafferty busy for a good while.
MJ chats to Laff He attributes his hairstyle to a Red Indian belief that says that when one’s hair reaches the waist, one connects spiritually with animals. “I am halfway there! And who knows – in a few years I could be the first Dutchman to train a Durban July winner for Indian owners!” he is on record as saying.
TONY MINCIONE suggests that everyone knows what’s wrong with racing. Everyone has an opinion, and that’s the way of the world. But do you ever get the feeling that the world isn’t as thoughtful as it once was? Not that we get things right or wrong more, just that we haven’t mulled it over as much, that we arrive at answers by choosing a side? Nothing highlights racings’ problems more than have a MAIDEN PLATE offered as a MAIDEN HANDICAP. We must ask: if this is the answer, then what is the question? Whose side is it? So maiden races are for horses that have never won a race. It’s racing’s entry-level. Sure there are some practical concessions, there is a simple WFA formula so that 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds meet, there is a sex allowance to encourage fillies to race against colts, and we keep 2 year- olds separate until they are closer to 3. But in principle, the entry-level of the sport is to be able to win a race before choosing your career path. You can compete, without worrying about merit ratings or conditions, and always against horses who have never won.
Two Groups Over time it has proven to be an excellent system. Roughly speaking, the horse population has been divided into two groups, horses who never win a race and those that win 1 and more. The South African racing we are all so proud of when our horses go overseas and shock them, from London News, Sun Classique,Victory Moon, Ipi Tombe to JJ the Jet Plane and Variety Club etc, are horses that are standing on the shoulders of a system that asked only one condition: that the first test that everyone goes through is the same entry exam for all, a not negotiable benchmark where your first victory is fair, without concessions or handicap advantages. The brilliance of this is that as a breeding country we can trust that a winner in the studbooks is exactly that. That if a mare has a winner, we understand what it means. If a stallion has a winner over a mile, we know what that means. We know what it means if you win in your first two runs (Met and July fields consist of horses where 9 out of 10 have won in their first two starts). It’s a basic separating the wheat from the chaff. This may not seem a big deal, but horse racing is a game of so many variables that after so many advances, after great statistical improvements in form guides, after digital timing, after computer analysis, money still doesn’t guarantee anyone success. So the benefit of an entry benchmark gives you the kind of security you see in UK racing where certain pointer races go back 100 years or more. It’s not tradition for tradition’s sake – but keeping some things that are tried and tested, and true. Other than the individuals who would benefit in a race from being weighted to win in a maiden, who would want this?
Not A Positive! Now altering conditions so that you do not win because you are ready and able, but because you have failed in your previous runs. Again, who wants this, and why? I suspect operators and not fans or participants. And probably not punters who had given up on handicaps and mainly play on maiden races. Breeders must hate this – your mare has a horse who should have won but doesn’t because a proven bad horse gets a 2 or 3 or 8kg advantage. To make it even worse, you then enter the handicapping system (post maiden handicapping system) with an advantage that you keep. If you did receive 8kgs, and you win by a short head, the horse you beat will still have to give you say 7kgs. We started with a tiered system of racing in South Africa and introduced merit for handicapping believing that it would only affect handicapping. What actually happened is it consumed everything between Maiden races and Feature races. It changed the whole landscape at the expense of good horses, and at the expense of smaller yards.
Excellence Part of horseracing is competition and consequently the pursuit of excellence. The competition part comes alive because there is this 1 in 10 attrition factor. Most races have about 10 runners and only 1 can win. As you win you move up with horses that did the same as you. By the time you are a 4 or 5-time winner (without handicapping), you are part of the top 5%. With handicapping some other horse will get your spot. Each Maiden Handicap we have will make rewarding success fairly, more difficult. If this were a school system, there is a time to help the battler, but also a time to hold back those who haven’t made the grade. Maiden Handicaps is how you promote those who haven’t grasped reading yet. Who wants that?

Jackson Gelding NHA The Twice Over Again! Lands Gamble Weekend All the KZN Stars of 2019!
T
The well-related Jackson gelding Leicester Square landed the gamble at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday and looks a 3yo with a bright future.
rying the 2000m for the first time and fitted with the blinkers, the gelding, backed from double digit odds into 6’s, made short work of his nine opponents in the Pick 6 opener as he stormed away from them at the 350m mark to win under the hands by close on five lengths in a time of 123,96 secs. “The pace was quite muddling, so I didn’t hang around – but when I asked him, it was no race,” said the LG Panelbeaterssponsored Sean Veale, who rode three winners on the day. Veale added that when he had jumped off at his last start he had told assistant trainer John Buckler that the gelding would win next time. Trainer Glen Kotzen said that they had purchased the well-bred
galloper as he was related to their smart former charges Pack Leader and Light The Lights. “The Jackson progeny need a bit of time. I think he was a bargain at R125 000 off the National Yearling Sale. Well done to Ridgemont, and I’m glad that Suzanne and Hugo (Hattingh) stayed on after Friday evening to be here to enjoy the win,” said Kotzen. The Hattinghs won the Champion 3yo Filly award at last Friday evening’s KZN Season Awards for their Duke Of Marmalade daughter, Temple Grafin. Leicester Square is out of the three-time winning Spectrum mare, Epic Style. The gelding is registered as having been bred by Riethuiskraal Stud.
Update
The NHRA advises that Meryl’s rating was left unchanged on 101 after her narrow victory in the Listed Jockey Club Stakes for fillies and mares over 2000m at Fairview (turf course) on Friday, 23 August 2019. In fact, MERYL was by some way the highest rated runner in this conditions event. The Handicappers were of the opinion that the consistent sixth placed ESTEEMAL was the correct line horse to use in assessing the race and as such, her rating remains unchanged. Runner-up RAVEN GIRL was raised from 94 to 98, while third placed STUDIO BLUES was upped from 90 to 96. Fourth placed DELIA’S DELIGHT remains unaltered on 97. The only other changes were made to RED GINGER (who drops from 96 to 94), WOODSTOCK FAIRY (down to 78 from 80) and to WIDOW’S LAMP, who drops to 90 from 92.
Randjes Boss Defends His Domain
T
Qatar Racecourse Manager and former SA jockey Bradford Smith’s recent comments in a television interview regarding the 'horrifying' state of the Randjesfontein Training Centre track hit a nerve and even trainers came out in defence of the surfaces.
he Randjesfontein manager Hilton Makhubedu responded to the criticism levelled at his course by the vastly experienced Smith, who was involved decades ago with the established of the centre. Tabnews reports that a lot of the criticism has been directed towards the track managers, who have been accused of not being qualified or skilled enough to run the operation. The 37-year-old Makhubedu studied at the University of Pretoria where he acquired a certificate in Turf grass management. He also has a certificate in sports Turf management (horseracing) and another in project management. “I started out as part of the divots repair team in 2001, filling in the racetracks after every race was run at Newmarket and Gosforth Park – this is all I really know,” assured Makhubedu. “I then heard there was a vacancy to be a tractor driver and I jumped at the opportunity. The funny thing is, because I didn’t have a computer at the time, my first CV was handwritten. “Two months later I was called in and afforded a learnership. From there I just kept adding to my qualifications and then I started working at Rand Water as a senior gardener.”
This is where Makhubedu’s managerial skills were sharpened. In fact, he won employee of the year three years in a row – and two major awards during his stint there. “I eventually found my way back to horseracing and in 2012 I was appointed supervisor; in 2014 an assistant and from 2016 to this day I have been the track manager.” The negative comments regarding the tracks don’t bother Makhubedu. He reckons sometimes you just have to let your work speak for itself. “I’ve heard what has been said and I want to make it clear that we know and fully understand what we’re doing here. “If the tracks were in poor condition, I don’t think the likes of Mike Azzie, Sean Tarry and Mike de Kock would keep quiet – they have no reason to protect us.This is the home of champions and we try to match the quality of our tracks with the quality of the horses.” What most people forget is that hundreds of thoroughbreds beat that track up on a daily basis, so the fact Makhubedu’s team keep the grass in excellent condition every day is commendable. “Horses can weigh 500kg or
more so I take pride in the fact our grass can handle the pressure. If you let horses do that on a rugby or soccer pitch it wouldn’t survive,” explained Makhubedu. “We use kikuyu grass and although it turns brown during certain seasons, we maintain the same cushion and consistency.” This job is basically a science because samples of the grass used at Randjesfontein gets sent to the laboratory regularly and that’s what essentially decides what type of fertilisers Makhubedu uses. In an effort to prove that he and his team are all for constructive criticism, he let known that he discusses day-to-day issues with trainers at the centre and he has even included all of them – big and small – in a WhatsApp group. “De Kock is a globetrotter so we try our best to produce the same quality track he would work on overseas. We want this for all our trainers and my team is here to make this possible. “I’m blessed to have a team as hardworking and motivated as mine. The guys who mow our grass, tractor drivers, and cleaners are equally as important – it would be unfair for me to take the credit for the track.” Makhubedu believes if a horse from Randjesfontein wins the Summer Cup or Durban July, his entire team has won too. “There will be challenges,” he admitted. “But that is why you hire people, to ensure issues are fixed.”
The KZN Racing Awards and season-end celebrations were held at an enjoyable function in Gold Circle’s flagship venue, the Silver Ring at Hollywoodbets Greyville, on Friday evening.

Blue Sky Baby! The 2019 Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold was a picture of good health at Candice Bass-Robinson’s Milnerton yard on Monday as she prepares for the forthcoming Cape Summer Season. A first Gr1 winner for her treble Equus champion sprinter sire What A Winter (Western Winter), the winner of 7 of her 9 starts suffered an injury after her arrival at Summerveld for the SA Champions Season and never raced on the East Coast last season. The Drakenstein owned and bred filly will be aimed at the Sceptre-Majorca double.
Flower Power
Wilgerbosdrift’s Gr1 winning sire Flower Alley, whose first 2yo’s made a big impression here last season, enjoyed more black type success in North America on Saturday. His 6yo daughter Beach Flower dug down deep to score a repeat win in the Minnesota H. B. P. A Distaff Stakes at Canterbury Park. Sent off favourite for the 1600m contest, Beach Flower picked up the third stakes victory of her career in the process. A son of champion sire Distorted Humor, Flower Alley also enjoyed success at Woodbine on Sunday when his son Papa D shed his maiden over 1200m on turf.

JUSTICE DELAYED The subject of the perceived manipulation of serving suspensions timeously has been hotly debated recently. One man who won’t feel too aggrieved is Qatar Apprentice S Salem who was suspended from riding in one Qatar Apprentice race held in KwaZuluNatal. This was for failing to ensure he did not cause interference in the annual race on 4 August.
Duke Daughters Dazzle
Duke Of Marmalade, whose five time group winning son Marmelo currently rates as a leading fancy for the Gr1 Melbourne Cup, is fast becoming a very successful broodmare sire. His high-class daughter Wannabe Better is the dam of promising 3yo filly Lady Wannabe, who picked up her first black type success in the Listed Dunloe Hotel & Gardens Vincent O’Brien Ruby Stakes at Killarney. She is a daughter of Camelot and her dam won four times. She holds an entry for the Gr1 Sun Chariot Stakes. Group winners produced by daughters of Duke Of Marmalade include 2019 Italian Derby winner Keep On Fly, Chilean and Antonia De Vega.

KARIS GOES CLOSE
South African Jockey Academy graduate Karis Teetan finished a joint third in the World AllStar Jockeys Series in Japan on Sunday as he flew the Bauhinia flag and represented Hong Kong. Teetan took on 13 other riders including Irishman Colm O’Donoghue, up-and-coming French jockey Mickaelle Michel, Julien Leparoux (USA), New Zealander Lisa Allpress and Christophe Lemaire. But they had to take a back seat to local rider Yuga Kawada who captured his first and much awaited title.
Champ Out
UK Champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa could be out for more than a month after breaking his collar bone in a nasty fall at Chelmsford on Friday. He faces more than a month on the sidelines.
Jockey Ian ‘Fish’ Sturgeon was booked off permanently from riding in April this year due to a hip problem but is already thriving in various business ventures. Gold Circle reports that Sturgeon was found to have a labrum tear as well as tears in the joint capsule and joint ligament. He and his girlfriend Clare Steele have started a pre-training centre in Hammarsdale.
Assistant trainer Michelle Rix and her veteran Milnerton-based Dad Harold Crawford will train in a partnership from this week. One of the heaviest apprentices of his year, the 66 year old Harold Crawford has recently suffered ill health and has been assisted by his daughter. Harold has trained for over 43 years.
The Roar Goes Silent
Qatar Racing and Tweenhills Stud have announced the death of shuttle stallion Roaring Lion who was euthenized after suffering another bout of colic in New Zealand. A 2018 Cartier Horse of the Year and a winner of four consecutive Gr1 races, the grey was a son of Kitten’s Joy. Owned by Qatar Racing, Roaring Lion covered his first book of mares in the spring, but it was when he was shipped to New Zealand to stand at Cambridge Stud that the problem first emerged.

Winning Form’s Charles ‘PE Striker’ Ndlovu’s finely judged cucumber-cool ride to grab a nailbiting last-stride victory in our first stakes feature of the season at Fairview last Friday had all the hallmarks of a polished performance by a top drawer jockey.
t the age of 35, Charles tells the Sporting Post that he feels geared and ready to produce his best season to date. He has already ridden 6 winners, with a total of a modest 15 on the board last term. “I was out with an injury for three months last season. That really set me back. And race-riding is such a confidence dynamic. The mind and body have to be in sync. They have to be right. I have got no excuses – a wonderful family, a powerful main yard, the support of good people including a loyal sponsor in Winning Form, a fit mind and body – and many years of experience!” When asked about his flying start to the term, Charles says that he ‘feels alive’ when he gets on a horse. “I feel on top of the world. I may not always be on the best horse in the race but I have done my job if I have done my very best and got the maximum effort out of my mount. So a horse that finished last the week before and now runs second last is an improvement.” He relishes the challenge to improve horses. We asked him how he really felt about riding work six or seven days a week and then not necessarily getting the plum rides as Cape-based Greg Cheyne is Alan Greeff’s first choice jockey. “I can say with all sincerity and honesty that the fact that I may ride a lot of work and not always be on the stable elect does not bother me in the least. I am fortunate to have the mindset that reminds myself every day that I wake up that I am attached to a champion yard – it’s a job many jockeys would give their eye tooth for. If I let anxiety and a grudge mentality set in, I may as well go cry in a corner and go do something else. We are a top team – that’s more important than anything else.” Today Charles has made ‘the Bay’ his home. He loves it here and enjoys a good life with his longstanding partner Nopopi and his two gorgeous daughters, aged nine and five. He attends the Methodist church where he participates in the counselling and preaching and says that spending time with the family and work take up most of his time.
“My days of partying and socialising are behind me. I ride work up to seven days a week. I like to watch my show on tv and then get into bed at about 21h30 and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to give it 100% at work.” Charles was born in Durban’s King Edward hospital and grew up in the small town of Izingolweni near Port Shepstone. He was brought up in a strict Catholic environment and has always respected the value of faith and prayer. His staunch beliefs came in handy when he won the Listed Jockey Club Stakes on Meryl last Friday – a race that looked a tall order for the classy filly from a 17 draw – and a host of traffic issues in the home straight that almost shattered the fairytale. “I prayed every day in the week of the build-up to the race. I had run second on her in a sprint just a few weeks earlier. She gave me a lovely feel – so when Mr Greeff put me on for the
feature, I realised this was my big chance to make a great start to the season.” Charles explains that he managed to slot Meryl in nicely and she was going beautifully at the 350m. “I thought that If the gaps appear, we will win. But then we had our way blocked. I switched her and she found her stride quickly. It is at that point where faith kicks in.
I was patient and it paid dividends as she saw daylight and we got there late. It was a memorable moment. A plan come together in my head! She will be a mare to follow this season, I feel.” Charles attributes veteran trainer Hekkie Strydom with having had a great influence on his career when he moved down to Port Elizabeth as an apprentice. “When I was an apprentice, Mr Strydom taught me to be patient on a horse. To sit as long as possible. His voice often rings through my head when I ride those kind of races. Some of the guys in the weighing room call me the ‘PE Striker’ – which is a bit of a grand title, to be frank!” The young man’s interest in racing was sparked by his father, who punted occasionally and noticed a newspaper advertisement inviting applications to the SA Jockey Academy. Charles’ older brother tried out, but didn’t make it past the interview stage. But Charles was accepted and joined the Academy in 2000, alongside the likes of recently retired Ian Sturgeon, Kevin Derere and Vicky Badenhorst – who is married to Gavin Lerena and also no longer rides.
Charles recalls receiving plenty of support from the late Gift Funeka. “We didn’t have a lot of African jockeys at the Academy and he was my senior. A couple of times I felt like throwing in the towel and going home and to have someone like Gift sit me down and talk me through it, helped me a lot.” His career got off to a slow start. “When I signed my papers at the end of my second year, I got 5 rides, so they decided to send me to Zimbabwe to get more experience. My first winner was a horse called Be Real trained by Paul Matchett and his assistant trainer, Lowen Denysschen. I was so excited, I saluted like a lunatic!” Back in South Africa things were still a little slow, so riding master Gary Rich organised for Charles to transfer to Barry Steenkamp, who he stayed with for two years. He also rode a lot for Hekkie and Jacques Strydom through his apprenticeship.” A sad injury to Charles Roberts opened the door at the Greeff yard for Charles. He has never looked back. “I do ride work at Mrs Sharon Kotzen and Mr Jacques Strydom too, but Mr Greeff is my anchor yard. He is a calm, cool trainer. You only put yourself under pressure, he never puts you under pressure. So I flourish in that environment – it brings the best out in me and he has taught me so much and uplifted my career. I’m so fortunate, you know!” Charles is not an outspoken guy by nature, but we pushed him to suggest a change he’d like to see. “I know they are important, but I think racing has too many rules some days. And they are often made by people who have never even sat on a horse. And then the list of items that are prohibited can be over the top. If I have a headache before races, I can’t even take a Disprin. That’s crazy, in my personal opinion. But the downside is outweighed by the great plusses. The atmosphere at Fairview, even on a mid-month Friday, is good. So many people love the game. I think the future for SA racing is bright. I don’t participate in the negativity. I live my life in a positive frame of mind.” On the subject of his sponsors, Winning Form, Charles says that he has sometimes gone a month without a winner - and he never gets even a moan or a whinge. “I’m really hoping to make them, my supporters and my family proud with a big season. I feel right and in a good space!”

Starting a new stable from scratch is not easy at the best of times but, undaunted, Tomcat Racing’s new yard is looking spick and span and ready for more customers.
heldene Chant writes that Borrowdale Park desperately needs another competitive stable and she hopes that Thomas Mason will soon get all the support he deserves. He is one of those lucky people who loves what he does, and he has been a familiar face at Borrowdale for years. He was born into racing as his mother, Anna Mason, trained in Denmark and Kenya. Thomas attended senior school in Denmark
and took the opportunity to ride work at that time. He began his racing career in Zimbabwe with the late Murray Lindley, and subsequently joined Kirk Swanson’s yard in 2005, becoming an assistant trainer in 2009. He has an eye for a good horse, having been influential in the acquisition of several local stars such as Cape Cod, Haga Haga, In The Mood, and Heir Line, to name a few. The KZN Racing Personality Of The Year award trophy was handed to Stacey Haswell at the upbeat regional racing awards function in the Hollywoodbets Greyville Silver Ring on Friday evening.
Thomas sent out 5 runners in the closing stages of the 2018/19 racing season, contesting 8 races for two seconds, a third and a fourth. Not bad for a start! 55,90 secs! Battaash made it third time lucky in the Gr1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Friday. The Charlie Hills-trained gelding smashed the course record, held since 1990 in this race by Dayjur in the same colours of owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. York’s perfectly flat 1000m has always been a test of blinding speed although many regarded Dayjur’s time of 56,16 secs as a record unlikely to ever be beaten. Battaash hit the line in 55,90 secs. The Curragh’s leg of ‘Irish Champions Weekend’ is now set to host probably the world’s fastest sprinter!
Personality Of The Year - Stacey Haswell BUT WHO is he? Stacey Haswell is KZN's assistant starter and the upbeat and ever smiling character has worked at the start for over 30 years. Word is that he has never lost his enthusiasm for one of the industry's most underappreciated roles. Haswell thanked the Chief Starter Solly Ngcobo and then praised the team of handlers underneath him, saying :"Without you I would not be standing here." The Anita Akal award went to a doyen of the owner ranks in Mary Liley. The popular longstanding personality of the owner ranks was obviously surprised and in the quote - or misquote of the night –
said: "I thought this award was only for jockeys, I didn't know it was also for people." See the list of winners on Page 7

Easy Does It Hollywoodbets Greyville (poly) 18 August There were a number of very easy victories on Sunday’s poly track card, but none more so than that of FIRE FAERIE in the maiden plate for the girls over 1400m. Backed into favouritism at the track, the daughter of Irish Flame was soon up handy. She was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 400m marker and despite being eased down late, she cruised in by seven and a half. Another to win with authority in the maiden ranks on this card was the newcomer DISPICABLE in the opening 1200m event. Always top of the boards, Tony Rivalland’s charge led throughout. He was always in command and extended his length and a quarter advantage to three and a quarter in the short home straight. A MR96 Handicap over 1000m topped the bill and in what not surprisingly proved to be the faster of the two races over the distance, the Sail From Seattle filly BOEING CITY registered her fourth career victory. Nicely positioned in second in what was always a very tightly bunched field, Garth Puller’s charge took up the running 400m out and kept on strongly in the closing stages of the race to beat the always handy veteran BIG KING (now an 8yo) by a half. TITBITS Now a winner of two from four, DRUNKEN SAILOR ran on well from the rear when getting up in the very last stride to land the graduation plate over 1200m. Fourth placed MAC ‘n SCAR also finished well from the rear in this race.

Strong Blast
Deeds Not Words Turffontein 20 August Five of the nine races on the old stand side track on Tuesday afternoon were staged over 1400m and stopping the clock in the fastest of these was NO MORE WORDS when winning the MR76 Handicap for the girls. Freely available at 18/1 on the off, the poorly drawn Byword mare was positioned at the back turning for home. She quickened well in the long home straight and did well to get up late after being hampered 300m out. Three of the four remaining races were run over1160m and by far the quickest home amongst these was PRINCESS NICOLE when winning the bill topping MR84 Handicap. Just five went to post and nicely positioned in second she was always poised to strike. She commenced battle with the odds on favourite MAGIC SCHOOL 200m out and with the rest left trailing in their wake, she got the verdict by a half. A maiden plate over 2400m completed the day’s fare and here victory went to the favourite FINAL OCCASION. Always handy, Geoff Woodruff’s charge put his head in front 500m out and just had enough in hand to beat the well supported outsider POPPYCOCK by a half. TITBITS The 3yo daughter of Crusade THE FIFTH WAVE made it two from four when beating a small, but useful looking field going away in the graduation plate over 1160m.
Hollywoodbets Greyville 21 August A maiden plate over 1000m got proceedings underway on the poly track on Wednesday afternoon and here we saw a comfortable victory for the lightly raced Toreador gelding NINOTTO. Sent off a well-supported favourite, Dennis Drier’s charge was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead 60m out and won well from the running on duo of VINODH’S BOY and DOUBLE ESPRESSO. A graduation plate was the only other race to be run over 1000m and in a time 0,7 seconds faster than that of Ninotto, the lightly raced TRAVELLING LIGHT gained her second win from only four starts. Just five went to post and nicely positioned in second she was always ready to pounce. She did so 250m out and kept on strongly in the closing stages of the race to fend off a determined
Four Favs Vaal 22 August
The aptly named THERECANBEONLYONE looked to be a good thing in the opening work rider’s maiden plate over 2400m on the classic track on Thursday and so it proved to be. Content to track her only serious rival in the betting market LACONIA for most of the journey, Sean Tarry’s charge suddenly found herself with a bit to do when the front running RITCHI stole a march 500m out. The daughter of Twice Over quickened well under a determined ride from Joe Gwingwizha though, and went on to score going away after striking the front close home. The MR68 Handicap was the fastest of the three 1600m races on the card and here favourite backers were again on the mark when WAQAAS did the business. In the rear for most of the journey, Fabian Habib’s charge ran
on best of all at the business end of the race and comfortably accounted for the supported PELICAN BAY. The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1000m where by far the faster of the two races was the MR76 Handicap won by the favourite BEFORE THE DAWN. A very easy winner in the maiden ranks last time out, Ashley Fortune’s charge was soon positioned close to the speed. She was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 200m marker and won going away by a length and a half. TITBITS Now a 9yo, the grand old servant GREASEPAINT took his tally of wins into double figures when landing the MR80 Handicap over 1200m.
Three From Three Fairview 23 August With an 18km/h easterly tail wind the time of the non-black type Speedsters Stakes over 1000m on the turf track was not surprisingly a fast one. On leaving the stalls it was ALDO who elected to make the running whilst the heavily burdened top weight QUINLAN (62kg) sat at the back of the tightly bunched field. Quinlan ran on best of all over the final 400m and in what proved to be a real thriller, he got up in the very last stride to deny the always handy CALLA LILY. The MR86 Handicap was by far the fastest of the two 1400 races on the card and here the Querari mare RINGS AND THINGS made it three from three since relocating to the province. Always handy, Alan Greeff ’s charge put her head in front 200m out and comfortably accounted for the running on FLY THOUGHT by two and a quarter. The listed Jockey Club Stakes over 2000m topped the bill and here the classy MERYL registered her fourth career victory. Nibbled at on course into 6/1 from 10’s, the Tiger Ridge mare raced in midfield for the vast majority of the trip. She ran on stoutly down the long home straight and in another classic finish she got up in the shadow of the post. TITBITS Now a winner of four from six since relocating to the province, EPIC STORM came from the backend of midfield when getting up late to win the MR76 Handicap over 2000m.
challenge from CANDY GALORE by a quarter of a length. Three of the eight races were staged over 1600m and quickest home amongst these was the heavily burdened recent maiden winner WHAT A BLAST. Shouldering no less than 61kg here, the 4yo Visionaire gelding raced in midfield during the early part of the race. He ran on stoutly over the final 400m and with the rest comfortably beaten, he got the better of the heavily supported NORTHERN ROUTE by a half. TITBITS The best bet on the card for many, DANCING FEATHER ran out a very easy winner of the maiden plate for the girls over 1600m.

A number of well performed and blue blooded stallions are set to be represented by their first runners in South Africa this season.
mong them Cape are Guineas victor Act Of War, Tapit’s son Coup De Grace, the Dynasty sired Horse Of The Year champions Futura and Legislate, the superbly bred Flying The Flag and Dubawi’s classy Gr1 SA Nursery hero Willow Magic. Another well performed stallion, who also sports an excellent pedigree, set to be represented by his first runners in South Africa this season is the Ascot Stud based Global View. A son of the world’s premier sire Galileo, Global View made an instant impression in the sales ring this year. Not only was he responsible for a first crop yearling colt making R1 300 000 at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, but the multiple graded stakes winner was the Leading First Crop Sire, by aggregate, at the recent Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale. In what has proven a tough market, Global View had two colts make in excess of R400 000, a notable achievement for an unproven stallion today. His son out of Rozelana made R450 000, while a Global View colt out of Princess Magdalena was a R425 000 buy. Winner of the Gr3 Generous Stakes at two, and Gr2 Crown American Turf Stakes as a sophomore, Global View has plenty to recommend him.
Fast Family Ascot Stud’s Ashley Parker said of the decision to buy Global View: “We had just lost Sail From Seattle to colic, and I was very keen to acquire a son of Galileo from a fast family. Alistair Brown found Global View in North America – his dam (Egyptian Queen) had been a very expensive
yearling who injured herself. Covered in Ireland, Egyptian Queen returned to the USA where she foaled a rare American Galileo colt. “Global View has proved an easy stallion to mate, and he covered three quality books in his first three seasons at stud. Ascot will again be sending him 25 mares this season and I am hopeful they run as well as they look! His first crop have been purchased by many prominent owners and trainers, and I am confident they will receive every chance of succeeding.” Global View is a horse with an intriguing pedigree in that he is inbred to the important taproot mare South Ocean. The latter is not only dam of Storm Bird - whose great sire son Storm Cat is broodmare sire of Global View - but South Ocean is also fifth dam of Global View. Global View’s sire Galileo - who produced his 300th stakes winner this year - continues to dominate racing all over the world, and at the time of writing, is on track to record his 11th General Sires title in GB/Ireland. The remarkable son of Sadler’s Wells has had another superb season in 2019, with Galileo’s feats including a fourth Investec Derby win courtesy of his son Anthony Van Dyck. Galileo is responsible for earlier Derby winners in the form of New Approach (sire of Investec Derby hero Masar), Ruler Of The World and Australia. Other big races won by Galileo’s progeny this year include the Gr1 Juddmonte International, Gr1 Qipco 1000 Guineas, Gr1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas, Gr1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris, Gr1 Prix Ganay, Gr1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, Gr1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and St James’s Palace Stakes.
Global View In a further show of dominance, Galileo sons ran 1-2-3 in this year’s Irish Derby, while all but one of the runners in this year’s Gr1 Investec Derby were sired either by Galileo or one of his sons/grandsons.
Power Hold This dominance looks set to continue, with Galileo two-year-olds already making a big impression this year, thanks to pattern race winners like Armory and Love, with a host of well-bred prospects still in the wings. Galileo’s growing number of high-class and promising sire sons include all of Frankel, New Approach,
Teofilo, Australia, Nathaniel (sire of, among others, Enable), Intello, and Gleneagles – to name but a few, and their influence promises to grow from strength to strength. Global View’s broodmare sire Storm Cat (Champion Sire in North America in 1999 and 2000) is an exceptional damsire, with Storm Cat daughters having produced in excess of 260 stakes winnersincluding the very successful sires Speightstown (Gone West), Lord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha) and Sky Mesa (Pulpit). Storm Cat mares have built up an impressive record when
mated to Galileo, with that cross already responsible for Gr1 winners Ballydoyle, Misty For Me, Decorated Knight, Happily, Marvellous, Churchill, Clemmie, and Gleneagles. The latter, a dual Guineas winner and own brother to Gr1 winners Marvellous (Irish 1000 Guineas) and Happily (Champion 2YO Filly), has made a very bright start with his first two-year-old runners this season including Gr2 July Stakes winner Royal Lytham and Windsor Castle Stakes winner Southern Hills and three other black type performers, and Gleneagles is currently one of the Leading First Crop Sires in GB/Ireland for 2019.
Canford Cliffs Son For Caulfield Gr1 A smart son of Ridgemont’s Cape-based stallion Canford Cliffs looks a major contender for the first Gr1 event of the Melbourne Season at Caulfield on Saturday. WON last year by Humidor, the A$1 million Memsie Stakes is run at weight-for-age over 1400m, and Cliffs Edge looks ready to go very close. His aspirations were fuelled by the news that Mystic Journey is to bypass the feature – music to the ears of trainer Ciaron Maher. Maher, who trains in partnership with David Eustace, will have two runners The Australian website www. punters.com.au reports that Cliff ’s Edge and Humidor will represent the stable and Maher could not have
been more succinct when he learned Mystic Journey was being reserved for the Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on September 14. “Good,” he said. Cliff ’s Edge was beaten threequarters of a length into second place by Mystic Journey in the P B Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield on 17 August. Maher said that performance had brought on Cliff ’s Edge who will be racing third-up in Saturday’s 1400m contest. “He’s flying. That was a huge run the other day,” Maher said. Maher is looking forward to
Global View: A top-class son of the world leading sire of sires Galileo
Humidor making his debut for the stable. Previously trained by Darren Weir, Humidor won the Memsie Stakes second-up last year and will be entering Saturday’s race first-up this time around. Maher said after two official trials and a jump-out, Humidor was ready to make his racetrack return after missing the autumn with a leg Injury. Humidor will be ridden by Damian Lane who was aboard the gelding when he ran third to Winx in last year’s Cox Plate. “He’s had three trials now and he’s ready to go, but will be improved by the run,” Maher said. “He’s a quirky bugger but he seems free and happy and Damian Lane knows him very well and he’s happy with him.”
