With much of the field having their first run as a 3yo, Western Cape racing’s opening feature of the season, the R150 000 Listed Sophomore Sprint, sets the tone for what should be a sizzling summer on all fronts.

s the name indicates, the class are now in their second year at school. Apparently the word ‘sophomore’ is derived from the Greek terms, sophos, meaning ‘wise,’ and moros, meaning ‘foolish, dull’. So while the connotation is not exactly flattering, these are some of our potential future equine stars that could be entertaining us over the next few seasons. Run over the Kenilworth straight 1200m, the race is restricted to 3yo’s and the weights are framed with a base of 52kgs for maidens and one-time winners, with each additional win attracting a 2kg penalty. Over and above that, Graded and Listed winners are hit with penalties. After all that, nine one-time winners and a maiden will line up at level weights.

The Sporting Post top-rated King Of Gems was a 12-1 winner of his debut start over the course and distance in April and after two fair sprints, he produced an eyecatching fourth under two lengths off Snow Report in the Langerman. While his stablemate Finding Camelot finished a length ahead there, and on jockey engagements appears to be the stable elect, King Of Gems must be a serious contender. While Finding Camelot is also the officially top-rated runner in the field, he could find the 1200m on the sharp side and has already shown a preference for the mile. Captain Tatters beat Langerman winner Snow Report on debut and then ran on well for second behind the Hong Kong-bound Armando in the Somerset 1200. Rested 17 weeks, it is difficult discarding the Fourie – Snaith combination on any day, and he should be included.

The speedy Ground Control was a length behind Captain Tatters in the Somerset, and then choked up when trailed off at his only start this term. He looks much better than that and could make amends. Three Two Charlie followed up Durbanville maiden win with a 3,25 length third behind Armando in the Cape Nursery. His first start this season saw him staying on late behind the highly regarded Macthief at Durbanville last week. He will be sharper this time. His stablemate Constable has not seen action since his course and distance maiden victory fourteen weeks ago. He has plenty of scope for improvement. Djokocovic had excuses in the Langerman and may be better reverting to the sprint track. Piet Botha’s Warrior Tiger looks to have it tough as a thrice raced maiden. Call Me Al ran green on debut but then improved to win his second start. He is another who could be anywhere on the improvement scale. Glen Kotzen’s Hardfallingrain has produced two good runs over Saturday’s track and trip – winning his second start. He falls into the

same category as Call Me Al. King Of Gems, Captain Tatters and Ground Control could be the three to fight it out – with Three Two Charlie the fit dark horse. The recent maiden winners have scope and a surprise cannot be ruled out.

Two Strong Men The Sophomore boasts some good winners over the years - most noteworthy probably are 2012 victor Tevez and Hong Kong export Strongman (2013). The latter, a half-brother to SA Horse Of The Year Do It Again, raced under the name of Horse Of Fortune in the East. The Avontuur-bred Caesour gelding Tevez bowed out of a distinguished track career in February this year. Mike Bass and daughter Candice Bass-Robinson trained the soldier who had his first start at Kenilworth seven years ago. Tevez peaked with a terrific double in the Merchants of 2013/14. The well-related gelding retired with 9 wins and 22 places from 54 starts for stakes of over R1,5 million. Glen Puller trained Strongman to win the Sophomore in 2013 under Karl Neisius. The 8yo retired just a month after Tevez following his victory in the Gr1 Macau Hong Kong Trophy at Taipa. After winning his first three starts for Puller, he was exported and won another seven races - amassing well over R20 million in stakes. Strongman was bred by Northfields Stud, by Stronghold out of Casey Tibbs daughter, Sweet Virginia.

Angel’s Power (S’manga Khumalo) and Prince Of Kahal (Denis Schwarz) go head to head

Handicappers Spring In The NHA Handicappers have published their official analysis and ratings adjustments following Saturday’s feature at Turffontein. PRINCE OF KAHAL and ANGEL’S POWER have had their merit ratings increased by three pounds apiece after they shared top honours in a tight finish to the Gr3 Spring Spree Stakes (handicap) over 1200m on the inside track at Turffontein on Saturday, 31 August 2019. The race produced a good handicap finish, with 2,5 lengths covering the first eight finishers and only 6.25 lengths from first to last in a 12 runner field. Third placed ZOUAVES and fourth placed LA BELLA MIA were used as the joint line horses. With no second placed horse, this is the lowest way to rate a handicap race and accordingly PRINCE OF KAHAL goes up from 113 to 116, while ANGEL’S POWER was upped from 104

to 107. As an aside, ANGEL’S POWER has contested this event in all four years of its existence, previously finishing 2nd in 2016 and again in 2017, and 4th in 2018. Being the line horses, the ratings of both ZOUAVES and LA BELLA MIA remain unchanged on 119 and 109, respectively. WILL PAYS – winner of this race in 2017 – drops from 121 to 119, BOLD EAGLE (who had little luck in running) was given a small drop from 104 to 103, DOWN TO ZERO (who had a tough draw of 10) was only marginally trimmed from 113 to 112, and RUSSIAN PRINCE was cut from 110 to 108. -Press release published by the NHRA on Monday 2 September

Aldo & Dougie Spring Has Sprung! Dream Start Gr3 SPRING SPREE STAKES Turffontein last Saturday

R

As if we haven’t already had enough drama with just one month of the new term behind us, the first graded stakes feature of the 2018/19 season, the R250 000 Gr3 Spring Spree Stakes, produced a dramatic finish with a dead-heat and an objection crowning a thrilling 1200m dash.

un over the barrier-gate sensitive Turffontein inside track on Saturday, there were a few traffic issues in running, with the field marshalling to the outside – thanks, in part, to the false rail configuration. The pacy Russian Prince led favourite Prince Of Kahal, Valbonne and Angel’s Power into the straight, with Post Merchants winner La Bella Mia being given a patient ride by Muzi Yeni. Into the final stages, S’manga Khumalo looked to have timed his effort perfectly as Angel’s Power – second in this race in 2016 and 2017 and fourth last year – moving

forward powerfully to grab the consistent Prince Of Kahal. But in a grandstand finish, the Roy Magner charge Prince Of Kahal came right back in game fashion to give the talented Denis Schwarz his third winner on the day and force the dead heat in a time of 71,78 secs. Schwarz objected against the shared result but the judges didn’t agree that the Azzie’s Angel’s Power had done enough to justify demotion. The 6yo Zouaves ran on well fresh after an eleven week break over a distance marginally short of his best to grab third a length back. The smart filly La Bella Mia was not disgraced in fourth.

With everybody looking for the outside rail down the straight, things became quite messy late with a few getting squeezed for space. Bold Eagle was one who had to be checked. A son of Kahal (Machiavellian) out of the five-time winning Model Man mare Vogue, Prince Of Kahal was bred by Clifton Stud and was bought for R120 000 at the KZN Yearling Sale. He took his stakes earnings to R855 038, with his seventh win and ninth place from 26 starts. The 7yo Angel’s Power, who finally got the Spring Spree Stakes that he has sought for four straight years, is a son of Miesque’s Approval (Miesque’s Son) out of the Mogok mare, Angel Child. He was purchased at the 2014 National 2yo Sale for R100 000. He took his stakes earnings to R766 700, with his sixth win and 19th place from 41 starts. The Pick 6 pool – projected to reach R3 million – got to a healthy R5 569 419! It paid a dividend of R943 659.

Don’t Adjust Your Set

Tellytrack viewers can expect two short breaks in the television transmission every day from 8 September to 15 September at around 07h29 and 09h00 due to the spring solar outage. THE LONGEST breaks in transmission will be on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 September. The time and duration of the daily outage will vary, with a progressively shorter outage for the 3 to 4 days either side of 11 and 12 September. A solar outage – also called a sun transit or sun fade – is an interruption or distortion of geostationary satellite signals caused

by interference (background noise) of the sun, when the sun aligns directly with a satellite and the earth station it is receiving or transmitting data to. It usually occurs briefly twice per year after the March equinox and before the September equinox for the Southern Hemisphere. Given that all geostationary satellites are over the same geographic plane— the equator—and orbiting at the same

distance, 36 000 km, the solar outage will apply to every antenna at a given location. For instance, if there are four antennas looking at four different satellites, the solar outage will travel through all four satellites and antennas at that location on the same day. The four events will happen at different times of day for each satellite, as Earth’s rotation creates alignment. As Tellytrack uses two different satellites for incoming racing – the Measat and the IS-20 – the solar outages will happen twice daily. Tabnews

South African racing fans enjoyed a thrilling opening to the 2019/20 Hong Kong Racing season at Sha Tin on Sunday with Cape star rider Aldo Domeyer booting home a double and the Durban-born Doug Whyte saddling his first winner as a trainer.

Douglas Whyte celebrates his first win as a trainer.

W

ith plenty of the attention focussed on the Sha Tin debut of dual SA Champion jockey Lyle Hewitson, it was Domeyer who demonstrated his ability and the benefit of the experience of last season as he got two early for trainer Tony Cruz. Domeyer, who rode 13 winners when only based in Hong Kong for four months last season, celebrated a dream start when he steered California Gungho to victory in the fourth. He followed up in the fifth for the same trainer on Sunshine Warrior. Dougie Whyte was Hong Kong champion jockey for thirteen straight seasons and he became only the second man after Tony Cruz to move straight from riding to training. Whyte had seven runners at his first meeting and got off the mark with his second in the shape of the Australianbred gelding Adonis for owner Johnson Chen.

“It’s phenomenal. It’s fantastic!” Whyte said after the six-year-old had chosen the most opportune moment to break his own maiden. “It’s lovely to have the support and to be able to achieve my first winner on the first day; it’s Hong Kong, this is my home, so it’s a special feeling,” he continued. Whyte’s first Hong Kong win as a rider was Fireball, 23 years ago this month, and the South African found comparison between that historic marker and today’s breakthrough victory. “It’s just as emotional, it’s a good feeling,” he said. “I’m a lot more mature now and I’ve had a lot of success since, so to have a winner as a trainer, it’s not about that, it’s about the effort and the time that’s gone into this horse.” Winning jockey Regan Bayliss received praise for his successful ride. The Australian, 22, broke his hand during a late-season stint last term, but returned with zero ill-effects and his confidence evidently high.

Let The River Run!

I

Our 2018/19 Equus Outstanding Breeders Drakenstein Stud celebrated another big winner on Sunday when the Trippi gelding White River sauntered in to win the Gr1 The Courts Mammoth Maiden Cup run at the Champ de Mars.

n the process, he made it five wins from five starts this season. A winner of the Duchess and the Barbé, the former Brett Crawfordtrained Cape Guineas runner-up now based with the Rameshwar Gujadhur yard gave jockey Manoël Nunes his first Maiden Cup success. Relaxed in midfield, White River cruised away from his opposition for a classy win and while Alshibaa tried his heart out, he had to settle for second. Former Greyville 1900 winner Ten Gun Salute ran third. White River was owned here by Messrs W P Drew & B Kantor, Mesdames A M Doyle, D Nagle & Paul Shanahan & Klawervlei Out of Irish Torrent (USA) by Giant’s Causeway (USA), he was a R1,1 million graduate of the 2016 Cape Premier Yearling Sale where he was signed for by Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock Ltd. White River looks set to secure the Mauritius Horse Of The Year title. The island’s premier test of stamina, the race was initially run for maidens and was first won by Creeper all the way back in 1843. Since 1983, when won by Noble Salute, the race has been run over 2400m.

Simons Big Day For Hong Kong Gets A Flyer Hong Kong’s 2019/20 season opened on Sunday with an enthusiastic crowd of 68 271 cheering on their sporting heroes in an atmosphere of positivity at Sha Tin racecourse.

SA jockey Randall Simons enjoyed a confidence boosting start to his new Mauritius contract when he won at just his third ride on Sunday. SIMONS only rode his first work on Wednesday last week and demonstrated plenty of cheeky confidence as he booted Consul Of War home in the fifth race for his new employers, the Preetam Daby yard. Simons, who rode two winners for the De Kock yard at Turffontein the previous weekend, went close in the final race of the day when the judge had to be called upon to split the top five runners. His mount Never Fear was placed second. Simons was joined by another South African in Diego De Gouveia, who arrived to take up his contract with the Rameshwar Gujadhur yard on Friday. The 2019 Gr1 Cape Derby winning rider, Diego De Gouveia takes up a position recently vacated by multiple SA Champion, Piere Strydom. Diego, aka ‘Digz’, confirmed the decision to the Sporting Post and said that he was looking forward to the challenge.“I am young and feel that I should take my chances. I would really like to thank all the local owners and trainers who have given me so many great opportunities,” he said as he packed his bags on a trip that could set the standard for his future career. Whatever the outcome, the experience is likely to be a value-add! Like dual SA champion Lyle Hewitson, Diego came through the tough school of the workrider ranks. He rode for a year in Zimbabwe and attended the British Racing School in 2016. The Rameshwar Gujadhur yard are currently the top-ranked Mauritius stable on stakes.

acegoers roared loudest for 13-time champion jockey Douglas Whyte, who saddled his first winner as a trainer. Mr. Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We know that we are in challenging times here in Hong Kong but I found it very encouraging to see the positive energy that was created at the racecourse on Sunday. “The first-race atmosphere, the excited anticipation from the racegoers, was extremely good and the results, from a sporting point of view, were extremely pleasing: It was great to see Douglas Whyte have his first winner with only his second runner.” The CEO was also delighted with the five successes on the day for Hong Kong’s homegrown riders, all of whom are products of the world renowned HKJC Apprentice Jockeys’ School. “Our Hong Kong-grown talent has done extremely well today,” he said. “You can see the confidence in Vincent Ho, in how he rides, and it is encouraging for them to win five of the 10 races despite the significant increase in competition from our new arrivals, who also did well today without winning.” Turnover was HK$1.28 billion, while the

attendance was the fourth highest in the last 25 years. “We are very pleased to see the total attendance at 68,000 – that is a positive outcome and exceeded the expectation I had,” Mr. Engelbrecht-Bresges admitted. “I was really surprised that we could hold up the attendance to this level, which is similar to the crowd we had here on the opening day in 2017. I hope this shows Hong Kong racing is strong and we hope we can continue with this positive momentum. “The turnover was up by HK$35 million to HK$1.28 billion, and again, I have to admit that I expected it to be much lower today. Our commingling turnover has gone up from HK$158 million on this day last year to over HK$209 million. That shows the competitiveness of the overseas market.” Mr. Engelbrecht-Bresges thanked the city’s racing fans for the “tremendous support and the resilience they have shown” in a challenging situation. “We have got the first race meeting off the ground with a positive start and that emphasises the strong support we have from our fans. I would also like to thank our staff for their dedication to make this happen” he said.

Name In The Hat? “Making himself at home, Hat Puntano beginning to look like the sensational multiple Gr1 winner he was at the races”. Mick Goss was referring to the multiple Argentinian Gr1 winner and the subsequent Charity Mile star , who has settled in well into his new domain of the Summerhill stallion barn. Gaynor Rupert’s Drakenstein Stud, the Vilela family of former Samsung connection and ten-time champion breeders, Summerhill Stud, have joined forces to bring the son of Hat Trick to the market. His service fee is available on application.

ABSOLUTE MONSTER A 14 length win for the Charlie Appleby-trained Ghaiyyath (DubawiNighttime, by Galileo) in the Gr1 Grosser Preis von Baden run over 2400m at Baden-Baden in Germany on Saturday may have paved the way for a tilt at the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe - providing Enable with some pretty hefty competition! This was the first attempt at the distance for the Godolphinowned 4yo. Jockey William Buick labelled the winner an ‘Absolute Monster.’

Summer’s Cool

The Gr1 Gauteng Summer Cup is no longer on the Asian Pattern Committee’s hit list for a status downgrade, for the moment. Phumelela Racing Executive Patrick Davis told Short Heads that they have decided not to change the conditions away from that of a handicap. “The stake remains at R2m and we will do all we can to encourage out of town participation to boost the race. We will continue to contribute towards the travel costs of raiders as has been the case in the past.”

Resting Lotsa Fun

Avontuur’s triple Gr1 winning sire Oratorio (Danehill) enjoyed two winners over the past weekend. Operetta made it three on the trot when winning the Ladies Stakes run over 1200m at Turffontein on Saturday. The 4yo Operetta is unbeaten since being fitted with blinkers – this being her sixth victory. Out of the Var mare Varsity Queen, Operetta was bred by Pippa Mickleburgh and she was an R180 000 buy from the 2017 CTS Ready To Run Sale.

Asking Questions The Mauritius Stipes take issue with items like slipped saddles and changes in riding tactics. They ask the questions – why are our officials not doing the same?

What’s Retirement? Racing legend and former champion jockey Garth Puller celebrated his 68th birthday as we went to print on Tuesday. He says he has no plans to retire soon . “Sitting idle at home could age me,” he quipped.

Bernard Fayd’herbe has had his recovery slot extended to 30 November on the advice of his doctors. He was anticipated back in the saddle in a matter of weeks and his absence leaves the Cape jockey ranks a touch on the thin side.

Prince BIG BROTHER Charming

The NHRA have launched an exciting advance in Racing Control technology. The ‘Virtual Boardroom’ is a facility which enables officials based at HO to have real-time and review access to the live video patrol footage of any racemeeting countrywide, and to actively participate as members of a Stipendiary Board at the race meeting.

The Varsfontein bred Gimmethegreenlight entire Yulong Prince - known here as Surcharge - has been entered for the A$8 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup and the A$5,15 million Caulfield Cup. Now a 5yo in the care of Chris Waller, Yulong Prince ran just under 4 lengths off the winner when making his first Australian start. He won or placed in 10 of his 11 South African starts, winning the Gr1 Daily News 2000, Tony Ruffel Stakes and Secretariat Stakes, and also finishing second in the Gr1 SA Derby, Gr1 SA Classic and Gr2 Gauteng Guineas.

Kimberley Racing

T

The two men from Johannesburg walked in to the hastily arranged meeting at Flamingo Park. Months of uncertainty and rumour crashed head-on in a screeching collision as they said Kimberley would close on 9 December. They rattled off a few numbers, looked slightly apologetic and shrugged their shoulders. That was it. A community wiped out in a matter of minutes.

he mostly salt-of-theearth Kimberley racing community is currently still reeling in shock after both Phumelela and the Racing Association quite matter-of-factly pulled the plug on careers and lives a week ago. Decades of tradition, a dream initiated by Harry Oppenheimer, of blood, sweat and tears. It all went up in smoke – and all they got from the bearers of the tragic news, Patrick Davis and Larry Wainstein, was three months and some unrealistic offers of compensation to sort themselves out. These are sensitive days. Few are prepared to go on record – and we know that bad things happen to people who express their opinion in this game. But how much worse can it actually get? “One gets the sense that they have hardly applied their minds. Wainstein did most of the talking- why? The RA doesn’t have a strong representation down here. And shouldn’t they have been the balancing act with their member’s interests when it came to negotiations with Phumelela? The irony is, neither of the messengers arrived with a pen or paper. They said the numbers were in their heads. That’s insensitive arrogance personified,” suggested an unimpressed local. The alleged loss figures of R23,5 million per year are being questioned as inflated and ‘convenient’ as no supporting documentation or a presentation was provided to back up the story. “The security here costs R60 000 per month. The bus costs R35 000. That’s just two sets of expenses that could be better managed. But we are not privvy to anything. Zero consultation. What happened to the constitution, the law of the land and plain common courtesy?” asked an angry owner.

The rumour mill about the track’s closure has been circulating for many months. Trainer Leon Lotz approached the Sporting Post months ago as he was wary of purchasing more horses. They say that Wainstein told them a few months ago it wouldn’t happen ‘if I could help it.’ “That’s the real pain of it. They never came to talk to us. They never said things are chronic. They never asked for input, suggestions or for a solution that was workable. They were walking around here at the Kimberley Festival on 3 August as if we were looking forward to a big season ahead. Now it’s a half-baked poorly thought out gun-to-the-head ransom demand and there is three months left to rip out our roots – our children – our homes,” added the owner, who said he would be relinquishing his colours. He also questioned the complete absence of the National Horseracing Authority in the process. “The NHRA are the custodians of the sport. Should they not exercise a policing oversight role? This is a logistical and PR time-bomb of enormous impact. Shooting hundreds of horses as a result of a grossly mismanaged racing industry is going to look great on the front page of the Sunday papers. I’m sure new owners and sponsors will be queueing up. It’s a shocking indictment on the fatcats who drive the BMW’s and live on expense accounts. I’m starting to understand why ordinary people resort to radical action. Wait till the ANC and EFF hear what the industry has done to honest, hardworking people.”

Oppenheimer Diamonds were discovered close on 150 years ago in the Northern Cape. The late Harry Oppenheimer’s great passion for horseracing, coupled with his support for the Chief Race Steward of the then Griqualand West Racing

Club, ‘Sailor Malan’, saw him donate the land in 1957 – the racecourse still used today after undergoing a multimillion rand refurbishment in 2005 and being renamed, Flamingo Park. The closure of racecourses, while a symptom of the collateral damage of the economic realities facing the sport, is a naturally emotive issue. And with Clairwood the most recent casualty in 2014, following the likes of Arlington, Bloemfontein, Newmarket and Germiston, the demise of the only sand track in the country and a vital cog in the wheel of equine excellence – or a lack of it – will be a blow. “I was shocked to hear they are closing Flamingo Park at the end of this year,” trainer Leon Lotz told the Sporting Post in June, after picking up on the track rumblings that have been doing the rounds for some time. Lotz, who conceded that he was not the top trainer in the Northern Cape or anywhere else for that matter, said that he felt that the closure would have a knock on effect on the ‘food chain’ for the breeders and owners as a start. His old owners in Hoopstad wanted to renew their colours, but they decided tonight not to and just handed him the horses that he bought recently. “Kimberley is an alternative for horses that are not good enough to race in the bigger centres. It’s an option for owners to earn with horses that don’t make the grade elsewhere. As smaller trainers we purchase at the second-hand markets like the Shongweni Sale and the Super Sale at Greyville. We may be at the very bottom of the ladder, but Kimberley is an important cog in the wheel.” He is 100% correct – KZN trainers are already asking, where to now, for their polytrack slow-coaches who did so well on the sand. Looking at his personal position, Lotz said that his farm was within striking range of both Flamingo Park and Fairview, but that the latter was much stronger. “I was looking at the options and have spent considerable cash relative to my personal budget in the past few months and had intended to go and bid on a few horses at Greyville in June. I decided

not to put a noose round my neck, given this news,” he added. Lotz also made the point that since Stipendiary Steward David Rahilly had been permanently based in the Northern Cape, the centre was being strictly policed and professionally managed. While Flamingo Park racing cannot match betting turnovers achieved on a Monday in the bigger racing centres, the point made by Lotz that it is a strategic component in the SA horseracing economy is fair comment.

Sleepless Nights Trainer Jarett Rugg says he is one of the ‘luckier guys’. At the age of 37 he doesn’t have a wife and kids to worry about. “I took over from my late Dad’s cousin Duncan McKenzie two years ago. This is a major shock. We have all existed from month to month here – but life has been good. Now I suffer sleepless nights and headaches. Duncan has offered to help me at Fairview. And we have been given six months rent-free there. But I am worried – I only have 33 horses. I may have to leave some behind. I will have to up my keep costs as wages are more expensive on the coast. My owners have pledged their support,” he said. A born-and-bred local, reigning champion conditioner Cliffie Miller said on the SP comments platform that this was a very sad time. “I have lived my life and given everything to this place for 43 years - now it has come to this. Easy to say we must move, but some of us have property that’s paid for – and we can’t just pack up and go . Will the operator help towards a new property seeing that they uprooted me? We have families living on the property, with kids - where to now? All the horses can’t go to the other centres - must we kill them for the sake of survival? We can’t do that, I’m sorry. But if we now all of a sudden are running at that loss why did this not happen earlier?. We asked in an email not even a month ago about the rumours - but they were in denial about it.

We must pray that somebody out there sees our plight and comes to the rescue for the only sand track in the country. I can only pray to God for guidance.”

Tragedy Emmie La Grange, who is assistant to her husband Corrie Lensley – they got married at Flamingo Park - said she was deeply concerned about the impact on the families and the community – with HIV prevalent - the 280 odd horses, and all the cats and dogs that made up the colourful community. The Lensley yard is one of the few to employ female Grooms. Emmie is worried what happens now as females are unlikely to be able to move to the coast or Vaal. “Our staff are our family. I help the children with their homework. We put plasters on their feet. We have one little chap who goes to a model ‘C’ school here with our help. What happens now? This is a unique situation as the staff and their families live on the premises.” Corrie, who says that he could probably have 20% of his current string running in a stronger centre – but not necessarily winning races - says that behind the mines and the government, he felt that horseracing was probably the third biggest provider of employment in the region. “The local co-op stock all our feed – they employ people too. There are other peripheral service providers who will suffer too,” adds former multiple champion trainer Corrie. He lamented the devastating reality of the majority of the horses having to be culled. “The sport horse market here is limited. One can sit for months looking for a home for two horses. Now flooding the market with hundreds of horses could be catastrophic,” he says sadly. How was this tragedy allowed to happen?

Kimberley – Another Racecourse Phumelela Disaster Closure Shock

V

This industry is far too sensitive to accept constructive criticism. Right now we need people of courage to save us and say what it takes – without fear of reprisal.

astly experienced racing personality and former trainer James Goodman put pen to paper and poses a few questions of his own. Closing the Kimberley track is just another of the long list of Phumelela disasters. Under their watch racecourses have been closed and the land sold. Stakes have not kept up with inflation. And now Kimberley to be closed because it runs at a R23m loss. Phumelela has known this for years but done nothing to alleviate the loss. This loss is not sudden! Why the loss? Phumelela suggest it is running costs. Then why not start by cutting the running costs by creating local staff for the running of the race meetings? There should be no subsidies. Create a workable operation – budget properly and get the racecourse to fit the framework, Maybe change the Kimberley festival to be a self-sufficient event. I can just imagine how much that costs! Love or hate Kimberley, it is a working part of our industry which gives many horses a second chance. It fills a gap on Mondays. If management had just rather sat down and talked to the Kimberley racing community about cutting the losses by way of some very strict money saving initiatives – surely they would have preferred austerity measures with a business plan, as opposed to closure? Sadly, I am sure the Kimberly community would. But not Phumelela. It has always been mooted that the industry would be wealthier by not running racemeetings in SA. Well this is simply the next

step in that process and backs the theory. Phumelela has not got racing in SA’s interest as its core business – overseas betting is the focus. It has been an enrichment programme for shareholders. But that has collapsed. The share price says it all and share prices in the public domain reflect the health of the company. It’s critical! He writes that one only has to look at the controversy caused by Bradford Smith’s personal views on Randjesfontein and then the announcement on Thursday of the closing of Kimberley. What I have to say will probably not please many in positions of power in racing. Who actually cares if Bradford Smith says Randjesfontein is is not what it should be? Remember he comes from a racecourse and training centre where everything is pristine. He built it out of the desert. He also had a hand in building Randjesfontein. The hullabaloo was simply caused by him saying that, in his opinion, the centre is not what it should be. The knee-jerk reaction was to pull Winning ways, censure Goodman, and then implement ridiculous propaganda type damage control by getting trainers from Randjesfontein to counter Smith’s comments. It’s childish and shows how sensitive this industry is to criticism. Is Randjesfontein really in the pristine condition they would have us believe by the slew of trainers extolling the virtues of the centre on Tellytrack? There is plenty wrong. The sand tracks are much narrower, as is shown by the base not being fully covered by sand.

Now It’s Kempton

T

With stakeholders and the racing public still reeling from the announcement of South African horseracing’s worst kept secret, the dumping of Northern Cape Racing, a British track could follow a similar route.

he Jockey Club plans to sell Kempton Park, with plans afoot to build 3000 houses on the 230-acre site where racing has been run since 1878, Ladbrokes signed a new five-year deal on Thursday to back the two day Winter Festival at Kempton, but this

will not be changing anybody’s minds to sell for £600m. The likelihood that Kempton would be closed appeared to recede in March 2018 when an assessment of Spelthorne council’s green belt land found Kempton was ‘strongly performing’ in fulfilling the purposes of the green belt.

The rails are antiquated. The horse rings are the same as 20 years ago, with more wear and tear. Fences and the posts and rails are dilapidated. The stables could do with a coat of paint and the doors and window frames are crying out for a varnish. The Bullring is a restaurant cum bar, that lacks soul. It has no atmosphere and lacks class. Whoever built it cannot be proud of it! Chairs and tables are uncomfortable. I am sure it runs at a huge loss. Randjesfontein was the premier training centre in South Africa and that is why Brad Smith was head -hunted to build Qatar. I am quite sure that training horses at the centre works – as is borne out by the successes of the resident trainers! So, while Randjesfontein adequately serves as a centre to train horses, why does it languish in the condition it does? I was at Randjesfontein on Friday 16 August and these were my observations. Smith was there during October 2018 and maybe the tracks were being redone. The heart of this problem is Phumelela and their employees are reactive, as is shown by the response on Tellytrack. I believe racing should be proactive. How much better would this have been handled if they had just said: ” Hey, there MIGHT well be some substance to this view so let’s handle it at source and see what comes up!” To produce a whole host of TV interviews with trainers saying how wonderful everything is – when they patently know all is not great – is a source of great worry. We need people of courage to save us. Let’s have the forum to say what it takes in the interests of the betterment of the game – and not individual power players – without fear of reprisal. Come on people, please, let’s do it!

Flamingo Park Racecourse will stage its last meeting on Monday 9 December.

T

and all their grooms to relocate to another venue. Over the next month or so we will be in discussions as to where they wish to move. The options are the Vaal, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town,” said Davis.

he decision is based purely on commercial factors,” explained Phumelela Racing Executive Patrick Davis on Thursday last week. “A financial analysis conducted on Kimberley Racing in isolation from the other racecourses, indicated it was losing around R23.5 million a year. It has the lowest TAB turnover of any of local race meeting at around R3 million. “It is also one of the least cost-effective meetings to stage as we have to bring in people like stipes, judges etc from other centres. The last race meeting will take place on Monday 9 December after which Flamingo Park will close as both a training facility and a racecourse.” Davis and Racing Association CEO Larry Wainstein recently went to Kimberley to discuss the move with the Kimberley trainers and their staff, also assuring them they would not be left in the lurch. “Phumelela will support the trainers

“The general consensus is that they will go in different directions.” As a result of the closure, the 2020 fixture list has been rejuggled to accommodate 20 of those 36 meetings. The plan is they will be held at either the Vaal or Port Elizabeth and will be programmed with Kimberley-level stakes and race programmes. “We will also include some kind of protection clause for former Kimberley-based trainers at those extra meetings,” said Davis. Press release by Phumelela Gaming & Leisure on Thursday 29 August 2019

Competition - That Could Be The Answer!

T

In something of a bizarre twist following the announcement on Thursday of the closure of Kimberley, the Gauteng Gambling Board has called for expressions of interest to develop, own and operate a racemeeting licence and to operate a Totalisator licence in Gauteng. he undated notice in the possession of the Sporting Post states that there is currently only one licence for both in Gauteng and as the statement confirms, that was issued at the dawn of the democratic dispensation in SA.

In the interests of fostering competition in the horseracing betting industry, the board wishes to establish whether there is an appetite and need for additional racemeeting and totalisator licences. The closing date for submissions of interest is 30 September 2019. Read more on www.sportingpost.co.za

Cape In Shape? Western Cape Owners and Trainers have been invited to an address which will cover a number of changes which have to be considered to ensure the racing industry’s sustainability. All owners, and not only Racing Association Members, together with trainers have been invited to the meeting by RA CEO, Larry Wainstein. The meeting is to be held at Kenilworth Racecourse on Monday 9 September at 18h00.

Various interest groups have expressed an interest in having a long overdue say. It could be an interesting evening! Inquiries may be addressed to the Racing Association’s Jeanette Schuter at Tel: 021 762 3094.

The 1993 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea has had an impact as a broodmare second to none in recent times, with the deceased chestnut responsible for the Derby winning half-brothers, and outstanding sires, Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) and Sea The Stars (Cape Cross).

he remarkable Urban Sea produced a total of 8 stakes winners, notably the Gr1 winners Galileo, Sea The Stars, My Typhoon (Giant’s Causeway) and Black Sam Bellamy (Sadler’s Wells). Galileo, recently responsible for his 300th individual stakes winner, and Sea The Stars have dominated major European races in recent times, and both now have a plethora of sire sons at stud. In 2019 alone, Galileo and Sea The Stars have been responsible for 11 Gr1 winners, with their offspring taking such races as the Investec Derby, Gold Cup, Grand Prix de Paris, Juddmonte International, Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, 1000 Guineas, Irish Oaks, and Irish 1000 Guineas. Between them, Galileo and Sea The Stars accounted for four young stallions, touted among the ten most promising young sires around in a recent Thoroughbred Racing Commentary article, while Galileo is also responsible for top sires New Approach, Frankel, and Teofilo, among others. Galileo is also firmly established as an outstanding broodmare sire, a claim it is surely only a matter of time that his brilliant half-brother will lay claim to.

Derby Dream Sea The Stars and Galileo’s remarkable dam is also now making her presence felt through her daughters and granddaughters, with the Urban Sea impact - Urban Sea appears in the pedigree of each and every one of the runners in the 2019 Gr1 Investec Derby - showing no sign of slowing. Urban Sea’s remarkable influence was once again underlined at Friday night’s meeting at the Curragh. Promising 2yo filly, Cayenne

Pepper, (by Galileo’s son, Australia) made it three wins from three starts, when she accounted for So Wonderful (War Front) in the Gr3 Flame Of Tara Irish EBF Stakes. Not only is Cayenne Pepper (who is inbred to Urban Sea’s dam, Allegretta) descended in female line from Allegretta, but both Flame Of Tara runner up, So Wonderful, and third place-getter, A New Dawn, (Zoffany) are descended in female line from Urban Sea. While Cayenne Pepper’s dam, Muwakaba, (Elusive Quality) is out of a Nureyev half-sister to Urban Sea, So Wonderful’s dam, Epsom Oaks runner up, Wonder Of Wonders (Kingmambo), is a granddaughter of Urban Sea and A New Dawn’s third dam is also Urban Sea. Urban Sea is the granddam of Friday night’s Gr3 Snow Fairy Fillies Stakes winner, Goddess (Camelot), with the latter (a three-parts sister to this season’s high-class 3yo, Sir Dragonet, (Camelot)) being produced by Urban Sea’s increasingly successful daughter, Cherry Hinton (Green Desert). Urban Sea appears in the pedigree of four of the first five home in the Snow Fairy Fillies Stakes, another fine achievement for this broodmare extraordinaire.

Urban Sea Flame Of Tara Stakes at two, before training on to take second spot in the Gr1 Belmont Oaks at three. Another daughter of Urban Sea to make her mark at stud is the Epsom Oaks runner up, All Too Beautiful. That daughter of Sadler’s Wells only had a handful of foals, but her three black type performers included fellow Oaks second, Wonder Of Wonders, Italian stakes winner, Victory Song (Dansili), and Gr3 performer Sparrow, dam of recent Gr3 Chester Vase winner, Sir Dragonet. Stakes winner and Oaks third Alluringly (Fastnet Rock) was produced by a daughter of All Too Beautiful.

The Gr2 Gold Bracelet winner Flying Ice was recently acquired in the USA by private treaty from Team Valor, for export to Australia in 2020. She is in foal to Noble Mission. THIS WAS tweeted on Sunday by Alistair Brown of Equarius Bloodstock. Lane’s End Galileo stallion Noble Mission is a three-time Gr1-winning Champion. He is out of the stakes-winning Danehill mare Kind (Ire), making him a full brother to the magnificent multiple Gr1-winning champion Frankel (Ire)—already a leading sire in Europe. When Anthony Delpech steered her to victory in the Gold

The Deep Blue (Snitzel – Simply Carina by El Prado)

Yet another daughter of Urban Sea to make her mark at stud is Pretty Polly Stakes winner and Irish Oaks runner up, Melikah. The daughter of Lammtarra is ancestress of a host of top-class performers including Derby winner, Masar, and fellow group/graded stakes winners, Khawlah, Masterstroke (Monsun), Vancouverite (Dansili) and Moonlight Magic. Both Moonlight Magic and UAE Derby winner, Khawlah (dam of Masar), were sired by Cape Cross, the sire of Urban Sea’s outstanding son, Sea The Stars. Urban Sea, to

whom recently retired Investec Derby winner, Masar (New Approach) is closely inbred, clearly rates as the leading individual broodmare of her generation and her influence looks set to continue for decades to come. Inbreeding to Urban Sea’s dam, Allegretta (Lombard), is also on the increase, with this pattern having already produced the group/graded stakes winners, Armanade (Sea The Stars), the aforementioned Cayenne Pepper, and Tantheem (Teofilo), as well as Gr1 performer Frankly Awesome (Frankel) and recent Windsor Castle Stakes winner, Southern Hills (Gleneagles).

Ice Off To Aus

Cherry On The Cake A three-parts sister to Sea The Stars, Gr3 Blue Wind Stakes runner up, Cherry Hinton (the granddam of A New Dawn) is fast compiling an impressive record at stud. Not only is the daughter of Urban Sea the dam of the aforementioned Goddess, Cherry Hinton is also dam of Goddess’ Gr1 Belmont Oaks winning own sister, Athena, Irish Oaks winner, Bracelet (by Camelot’s sire Montjeu) and Gr2 Rockfel Stakes heroine, Wading (Montjeu). Cherry Hinton is also ancestress of a growing number of stakes performers, including A New Dawn and the high-class filly, Just Wonderful (Dansili). The latter both won the Gr2 Rockfel and Gr3

Top Class

Gr1 winner by 3 x Australian Champion Sire

Bracelet at Greyville in 2016, Flying Ice was the late Neil Bruss’ last winner here after 44 years before he departed for Saudi Arabia. A R125 000 BSA National Yearling Sale purchase, the Lammerskraal Stud-bred Flying Ice is a daughter of Triple Crown-winner producing Go Deputy out of the twice winning Western Winter mare, Strawberry Ice. A responding retweet from the SA Equine Health & Protocols said that it was wonderful to see SA

bloodstock being freely traded in international markets, which should be the norm once the current onerous export protocols from here are addressed. They added that two-way trade between South Africa and the EU will be beneficial to everyone. The formation of the Import/ Export Task team in August 2015 was in response to the need to take direct and focused action regarding the successful export of horses from South Africa. On their website, they indicate December 2019 as the target date for conclusion of protocols with targeted non-EU countries and agreement of design of quarantine station.

Making Money At The Office

Hollywoodbets Greyville 25 August A MR98 Handicap over 1400m topped the bill on the poly track on Sunday and in what not surprisingly proved to be the faster of the two races over the distance, we saw a smart performance from the Master Of My Fate gelding MASTAGAMBIT. Now a winner of three from seven, Dennis Drier’s charge raced seventh of the eight for most of the journey. He quickened best of all in the short home straight and with the rest well beaten he got up late to beat the front running STREAM AHEAD going away. Three of the afternoon’s eight races were staged over 2000m and stopping the clock in the fastest time amongst these was SAMSONITE when winning the MR85 Handicap. In the rear turning for home, the son of A P Arrow quickened well at the top of the straight and in what proved to be a real thriller he got the verdict over GIBRALTAR GREEN by a quarter of a length. The runner up also came from the rear and after having to switch 300m out, his rider dropped the rein late on. The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1200m where quickest home was TRIPPLE EXPLOSION in the MR70 Handicap. Swiftly guided over from a wide draw by Musi Yeni Tripple Explosion raced handy in second. He put his head in front going through the 400m and just held on by the narrowest of margins from his fellow 6yo GREAT DICTATOR. TITBITS Always top of the boards, BLONDE BABE won the opening maiden plate for the girls over 1000m easing down by a length and three quarters.

Back On Track

Not Such A Surprise

Durbanville 27 August Three of the eight races at the country course on Tuesday were run over 1250m and in the fastest of these, we saw a smart performance from the lightly raced 4yo MUSHI STEREK. After winning impressively by five on debut, something was clearly amiss when not persevered with last time out. Clearly back on track now though, this daughter of Stratum again made all and won with some in hand by two and a quarter. The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1400m where the faster of the two was not surprisingly the MR90 Handicap in which the Sail From Seattle filly VOMANDLA caused an upset. Allowed to drift right out to 16/1 from 17/2 at the track, Andre Nel’s charge was soon positioned close to the speed. She was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 300m marker and kept on strongly late to beat the luckless FAYE by a half. The runner up didn’t find the clearest of passages and finished well. A maiden plate over 1600m had opened up the meeting and here the Justin Snaith trained SILVER HOST won in eye catching fashion. In touch throughout, this 3yo son of Silvano was forced to switch 400m out. He showed a very nice turn of foot over the final 100m though and won going away by a length from his marginally more fancied stable companion WINTER IS OVER. TITBITS

Hollywoodbets Scottsville 28 August

The well-supported 3yo LARENTINA didn’t find the clearest of passages at the business end of the maiden plate for the girls over 1400m, but despite that, she won by a length and a quarter with some in hand. Poorly drawn MACTHIEF came from the back when comfortably accounting for a useful looking field in the MR77 Handicap over 1250m.

As is often the case in and here the column’s top rated Pietermaritzburg the distance of selection LINNGER LONGER 1200m took the lion’s share of the caused a major upset. Freely races. A MR104 Handicap was the available at 50/1 on the off, this fastest of the four and here it was poorly drawn Linngari mare was nice to see the 5yo joint top weight soon well positioned by Deon FILIPPO gain just reward for his Sampson. She took up the running consistency. Now a winner of five 200m out and just held on by the from 22, the son of Toreador raced narrowest of margins from the in the rear early on. He quickened rallying pacemaker CLASS OF well from halfway and after striking EIGHT. TITBITS the front 250m from home, he kept Positioned fifteenth of the sixteen on strongly late to beat the rallying for most of the journey, the lightly favourite CABO DA CRUZ by a raced BRASS BELL was flying at quarter of a length. the finish when a 2,5 length runner After losing out by the narrowest up in the opening maiden plate of margins at Hollywoodbets over 1200m. Greyville just three days earlier, GREAT DICTATOR was sent off favourite to win the MR68 Handicap over 1000m and TOP SPEED RATINGS he duly landed the odds. for this WEEKEND Always handy, the 6yo Great (Ratings shown have already been Britain gelding was ridden adjusted to allocated weights) to lead 150m out and won well by a half. A Merry Dancer Vaal 29 August

Trainer Paul Peter has been in devastating form of late and with four of the six runners in the opening MR88 Handicap over 2000m here it was no surprise to see him get off the mark early again. What was a surprise though was that the winner DIAMOND DANCER was the lessor fancied of his runners. Taken straight to the front by Callan Murray the 11/1 shot led throughout. He kept on strongly at the business end of the race and comfortably accounted for the favourite (his stable companion) POPSICLE TOES by a length and a half. The two 1800m races were both maiden handicaps and in by far the faster of these the 25/1 shot MOUNT RAINIER got off the mark. Placed just once in his ten previous racecourse appearances, Stephen Moffatt’s charge raced in midfield during the early part of the race. He ran on well from halfway and in what proved to be a real thriller he

got the verdict on the nod over the well-supported second favourite GENTLEMAN’S WAGER. The graduation plate was the faster of the two 1000m races that brought the meeting to a close and here the lightly weighted 3yo ARISTACHUS registered his second career victory. Set to shoulder just 51kg taking into account apprentice Dicken’s allowance, the Seventh Rock gelding was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m marker and kept on strongly late to beat the always handy ALEX THE GREAT by a quarter of a length. TITBITS At the back of the twelve 350m out, the Mike De Kock trained newcomer NIMITZ was flying at the finish when only beaten a short head in the maiden plate over 1200m.

Deat-Heat For Spring Turffontein 31 August Run in a time 4/100th of a second faster than the graduation plate won by ROCKIN RUSSIAN, the maiden plate won by the aptly named STOP FOR NOTHING was the faster of the two 1400m races on Saturday’s card. Freely available at 35/1 on the off Stephen Moffat’s charge was a little slow into stride and raced in the rear early on. He ran on best of all at the business end of the race and got up late to deny the Mike De Kock trained first timer ARNICA MONTANA. The Gr3 Spring Spree Stakes topped the bill and in what proved to be the fastest of the afternoon’s three 1200m events a dead heat was declared between the well-supported favourite PRINCE OF KAHAL and ANGEL’S POWER. Nicely positioned in second Prince Of Kahal took up the running 300m out. He was joined by Angel’s Power 200m later and after a thrilling tussle below the distance the judge couldn’t separate them. Four 1600m races made up the afternoon’s fare and in the fastest of these, a MR88 Handicap, the easy to back LONE SURVIVOR registered his sixth career victory. Always handy, the top weight took up the running 150m out and comfortably accounted for the younger MARCH TO GLORY (led 400m) by three quarters. TITBITS At the head of affairs throughout, ATOMIC BLONDE quickened nicely over the final 400m when winning the maiden plate for 3yo’s over 1600m by six.
