5 Kuda Sprint winner Agent Of Fortune could enjoy the step up in trip

PINNACLE STAKES at Durbanville this Saturday

T

The Cape champion combination of Justin Snaith and Richard Fourie have started the new term in good fashion. Their classy Star Chestnut returns from a seven month break when he carries the flag in Saturday’s Durbanville topliner and as a fellow who likes to run fresh, who is beating against them?

he Pinnacle Stakes weight structure favours the class and the seven-timer winning Star Chestnut is reportedly doing well at home and ready for a big run. He has been competitive against better than what

he meets here. Vaughan Marshall’s 2018 Kuda Sprint winner Agent Of Fortune is an interesting customer. He beat the high-class Cirillo on debut in the sales race but then chipped a knee and missed a SA Champions Season campaign. He has only

had three runs in the space of twenty months and showed his first flicker of life when beaten under two lengths by Photocopy at this track last month. His smart dam won from 1400m to 1800m and he must improve over this trip. Rested close on seven weeks, the talented Joey Ramsden 8yo Catkin missed a scheduled engagement last month as no suitable jockey was available to ride him. The stable indicate that he will need it. The super consistent 5yo Ready Steady Go ran on smartly last time to finish under 1,50 lengths off the top class Elusive Silva. He has proven effective at this track and has the

Cape Of Storms

T

Getting the various entities and personalities to sit around the same campfire and bury personal perceptions and agendas is going to be a nonnegotiable starting point to get Cape Racing back on track.

hat emerged from a rather haphazardly convened meeting hosted by the Racing Association’s Larry Wainstein at Kenilworth on Monday, 9 September 2019 that seems likely to achieve very little in the short term. An invitation was extended to local owners and trainers by RA CEO Larry Wainstein a week earlier. The note gave no notice of a specific agenda – this was instead handed to guests on arrival. And those who came in search of answers, left sorely disappointed. Larry Wainstein sketched the background of the Gold Circle

demerger, during which Cape Racing formed the standalone entity known today as Kenilworth Racing. The structure and day to day management of Kenilworth Racing is not straightforward, as it is managed by Phumelela, in part of the agreements struck during the Gold Circle demerger process. To give Larry credit, and even while it was his own party, he did have the guts to come out and face the music - to a degree. With figures presented by Wainstein showing the Cape to be in serious decline and the RA having to bridge ever increasing gaps, this is likely to become an increasingly large bone of contention as the

industry’s finances come under ever increasing pressure. The figures presented raised justifiable concerns and questions among those present. But with no representation from either the WPRRA, Kenilworth Racing or Phumelela board, answers were in short supply. With no clear hand on the reins from the Chair to keep things in check, or counterarguments or facts available, the meeting degenerated into speculation, accusation and recrimination. Was this a strategy or simply inept planning? Take your pick. A meeting was convened at Kenilworth earlier in the day where discussions were held to find a best solution to massaging the stakes structure against the background of a reduced budget. Wainstein said the Cape stakes were ‘under review’ – something we have all known for months. He couldn’t give us specifics and an announcement should be made in a few weeks. That was an anti-climax!

undeniable advantage of match fitness in his favour. The 6yo course-and-distance specialist Zeb has his first run of the season after being withdrawn midway through August with an elevated temperature. A solid hardknocker, he gets the 1,5kg discount courtesy of top apprentice Sandile Mbhele and could be dangerous if overcoming his wide draw. Mike Stewart has four runners in the race and Icon King appears to be clear stable elect after a welcome form return when winning his last start at Kenilworth. The 6yo is a dangerous front-

runner who was highly regarded in his early career and could stretch them if allowed to dictate from the 4 draw. The one-time winning 7yo Duchess Of Prussia looks outgunned in this line-up and does not appear to pose a threat on current form. The formless 6yo Pergola has not run for 43 weeks and the stable have said that he will need the run. The fourth of the Mike Stewart quartet, the 7yo Celtic Charm has no recent form to recommend her and would be a shock winner. Star Chestnut should carry too many guns and he is the selection to beat Ready Steady Go.

The charismatic Mike de Kock is a well-respected individual and he suggested that what was lacking is leadership. He recommended an urgent search for a CEO and didn’t feel that the fact that KR have Co Chairmen was necessarily a positive. It’s all well and good appointing a CEO, but when the present leadership is fractured, what’s the point? Hassen Adams, who apparently had a visit from Phindi Kema the previous week, didn’t cover himself in glory or grace when he launched an attack on the absent KR Chairman Robert Bloomberg and was never challenged or countered in the process. While some felt Bloomberg should have been present, had the two been in the same room and he defended himself and made his own allegations against Adams’ own alleged lack of delivery, where would the line have been drawn in potential prejudicial breaches of confidentiality and exposing boardroom strategy? Racing historian and expert Charles Faull made an observation about the lack of transparency and accountability, while owner David Abery impressed with his concise

questions and points. He could be a man to play a more prominent role in time to come. The lack of leadership at the meeting led to attacks on other KR board members and Phumelela. A poor show that had labels of circus and free-for-all being attached to it by some. And we are no further. Some owners told the Sporting Post that they came looking for answers and left with nothing. Disappointment in the lack of urgency amid the absence of leadership was the underlying thread. Sadly the deep rifts are likely to have widened amid the stone throwing. With many questions and no answers, one clear take-away was that those in charge are either not willing or able to sit around the same campfire. With the industry under fire from the economy, the government and the Public Protector, it seems the biggest threat might be from itself. If there are any leaders out there, would they please stand up?

Greg Cheyne steers Three Two Charlie to an easy win

Sophomore Sprint Handicappers Ratings Three Two Charlie has had his merit rating upped from 94 to 102 following his very comfortable win in the Listed Sophomore Sprint for three-year-olds over 1200m at Kenilworth on Saturday, 7 September.

T

his rating is a very good fit as, in assessing the race this way, 3rd placed KING OF GEMS, 4th placed CONSTABLE and 5th placed DJOCKOVIC all run to their marks and are therefore effectively all line horses. Accordingly, none of their ratings have changed, however, runner-up CAPTAIN TATTERS is raised from 96 to 99. Only two drops were made to unplaced horses, with WARRIOR TIGER being cut from 90 to 87 and GROUND CONTROL dropping from 93 to 90.

Bring On The Big Guns

I

Former 61 Mechanised Battalion Gunner and long-suffering owner Rod Mattheyse pulled rank at Kenilworth on Saturday when he shouted his What A Winter gelding Three Two Charlie home from the 600m marker, before the ‘gross’ galloper swept forward late to win the R150 000 Listed Sophomore Sprint.

t was something of a pleasing plan come together for Rod Mattheyse, who bred the 3yo in partnership with Beaumont Stud’s Anton Shepherd and others. “I didn’t feel that we were getting enough money for him when he went through the ring at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale – so I bought him,” said a broad-smiling Mattheyse, who confirmed that he had named the yearling – built like a tank – after his military unit. Trainer Candice Bass-Robinson described Three Two Charlie as a horse blessed with a super temperament – but quite a gross specimen – and that’s just why she could afford to give him a run ten days earlier. Gross in equine terminology indicates that he is a big strong upstanding heavy horse – and can takes lots of work. Ridgemont-Highlands jockey Greg Cheyne rode a confident race – on a horse he admitted he knew little about.

“He is an unassuming, lovely, big gross fellow. He was travelling well early and we got a bit cramped. So I gave him a chance. Our stablemate Constable pulled us through late. He should go a mile, I think,” said the recently crowned multiple East Cape Champion rider. After King Of Gems, Finding Camelot and Captain Tatters had looked to attack going into the final stages, Three Two Charlie (61) scythed through the traffic from some way off the gallop and stayed on best to beat Captain Tatters by 1,50 lengths in a time of 75,07 secs. King Of Gems was a neck back in third, with the winner’s stablemate Constable showing he needed it in fourth. Djokovic was a further 1,50 lengths back in fifth. The rest were well beaten. A R250 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate, Three Two Charlie has won 2 races with 3 places from 5 starts and stakes of R188 350. Bred by Beaumont Stud, Three Two

Charlie is a gelded son of triple Equus Champion What A Winter (Western Winter) out of the four-time winner, Mairingi Bay (Joshua Dancer). It’s amazing how some glorious sunshine, a smart horse and a smiling owner can make us forget the racing politics – for a while, anyway! Stipes report excerpt: DJOCKOVIC (O Noach) jumped inwards and brushed CAPTAIN TATTERS (R Fourie), thereafter DJOCKOVIC (O Noach) was slow losing one length, and was slow into stride. KING OF GEMS (D Dillon) and CALL ME AL (A Andrews) were slow into stride. Jockey M J Byleveld (GROUND CONTROL) reported that this gelding had choked up in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine the gelding on its return to the unsaddling enclosure and submit a report. FINDING CAMELOT (C Orffer) was hanging out throughout. At the 900m in a tightly bunched field HARDFALLINGRAIN (M Winnaar) raced onto the heels of WARRIOR TIGER (G Behr) and had to be checked and shifted in sharply. This resulted in DJOCKOVIC (O Noach), which was following, having to steady and KING OF GEMS (D Dillon) being carried inwards.THREE TWO CHARLIE (G Cheyne), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer Mrs C BassRobinson was advised.

The eleventh renewal of the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup to be run on Charity Mile day at Turffontein has received a handsome shot in the arm with the news that the stake for the 1400m event has been boosted to R1 million with immediate effect. THE 3YO contest, run on 2 November, is restricted to eligible graduates of the 2018 Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale and the news that the stake – payable all the way down to tenth finisher in a likely capacity sixteen horse field - has been effectively doubled, will be well received by all stakeholders. Announcing the exciting increase on Tuesday, BSA CEO Michael Holmes said that the positive outcome was the product of a collective spirit of cooperation between all stakeholders, which included Emperors Palace, Phumelela, the Racing Association and BSA. “The stakes increase is a testimony to what can be achieved through a unified and collaborative effort in the very best interests of this sport that we are so passionate about. The willingness to put heads together and increase the stake, thus rewarding our loyal owners and investors, was never in question, and augurs well for racing’s ongoing association with another winner in their own industry in Emperors Palace,” said Holmes, who lauded all role players. It’s well documented that the Ready To Run Cup and the Ready To Run Sale, which will be held at the TBA Sales Complex in Germiston on 3 November, have been inexorably associated with Emperors Palace for much of the prestige entertainment destination’s over two decades in business. Peermont Emperor’s Palace Chief Operating Officer Bob Yearham echoed Holmes’ sentiments and

said that the Charity Mile Day had become a foundation event for his company. He added that the news of the stakes boost was to be hailed as a 'major plus'. “I have become very familiar with the benefits of the ready to run concept in our well established association with the auction and the associated race, and, coupled with a great day of quality horseracing and the enormous benefits to charity, we welcome the great news of the Cup stake going up to R1 million. It is an honour and a privilege to once again add our name to the event and we are looking to achieving new heights this year,” said Yearham, a very familiar face in the racing community. Michael Holmes confirmed that progress logs reflecting the standings of the possible final field contenders would be issued in the build-up to the race, as has become the norm in years past. “Sixteen horses and two reserve runners will be carded. We would encourage trainers to optimise their focus on qualifying their candidates. It is always a high-quality sale and competition for a final field slot on the big payday is bound to be hot as we approach the first race entry date of 21 October.” Watch the media for all the big race updates! All enquiries regarding the sale itself may be directed to Ashley de Klerk on Tel 031 – 303 1017 or via email on bsa@equine.co.za

O On Fire!

Avontuur’s triple Gr1 winning sire Oratorio had another good weekend, with the son of Danehill producing four Southern African winners. Oratorio’s first local success came when his Drakenstein Stud bred and owned filly Speechmaker got off the mark at Fairview. Her sire struck twice in Southern Africa on Saturday, with the Oratorio sired Some Song scoring at Borrowdale, and the sire’s son Viva Rio victorious at Kenilworth on the same day. Oratorio rounded off his quartet at Hollywoodbets Greyville the following day, where his son Dickens romped home to shed his maiden by nearly six lengths.

Visionary Lammerskraal Stud’s resident stallion Visionaire (Grand Slam) had a pair of relatives make headlines on the first day of the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale on Monday. Visionaire’s Gr1 Santa Margarita Stakes winning half-sister Tara’s Tango was responsible for a Medaglia D’Oro colt (Lot 138) who made $2.15 million - making the regally bred colt the second top lot sold on Monday, while Visionaire’s outstanding dam Scarlet Tango had a Curlin colt (Lot 68) sell for $800 000. Both colts were consigned by Denali Stud on behalf of Stonestreet, with the Medaglia D’Oro colt knocked down to Godolphin, and the Curlin colt sold to Mike Ryan, as agent.

The World Premiere of the highlyanticipated biopic Ride Like A Girl took place in Melbourne on Sunday. The film tells the true story of Michelle Payne (played by Teresa Palmer), who beat the longshot odds to become the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. A small, but vocal group of anti-racing protestors made their way into the cinema, interrupting the screening three times. Police were not called to the event and the affected moviegoers were offered free tickets to another showing when it's released on September 26.

FOUR-TIMER

The Oratorio gelding Dickens was the first leg of a four-timer at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday for Gauteng-based trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren. The 8yo mare Ginger Biscuit, Prince Of Venice and What A Thrill completed the romp. Dickens and What A Thrill, were the mounts of Keagan de Melo with Ashton Arries riding a particularly good race on Ginger Biscuit. Warren Kennedy rode Prince Of Venice.

Hugh Out Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman has a broken finger and underwent surgery on Tuesday. Bowman was involved in a trackwork fall at Randwick and was taken to Prince Of Wales Hospital.

Piere picked up the tag from his wait-and-swoop style of race riding, an art he mastered on the windswept tracks of Arlington and Fairview in the 1980’s. He rewrote the record books when he became the first South African jockey to ride 5000 winners. That momentous occasion came in the Selangor Cup on Act Of War on 22 November 2014 at Kenilworth. He spoke to the Sporting Post while sitting out his Mauritius suspension at his partner’s home in Fourways, in advance of his return to race Piere was fined Rs.50 000 and suspended from riding in races for a period of 6 weeks in terms of the MTC Rules of Racing after he was found guilty of contravening MTC Rule 160 A(j). The stipes felt that he failed to ride Man Of Seattle to their satisfaction from the 400m in the second race on Saturday, 3 August. He was also suspended from riding in races from 6 August 2019, but will be riding at the Vaal on 19 September. “Having been off for over a month now, and with a few weeks left before I resume raceriding, I feel refreshed and ready to bounce back into the swing of things. My life is in a really good place and I think the breakaway on the island has done me well – despite the fact that it ended quite suddenly,” he mused. Striker took up a contract with the powerful Rameshwar Gujadhur yard in May and rode ten winners and twelve seconds from his 51 rides in five odd weeks there. He started in fine style riding Danger Rock to victory at his opening meeting at the Champ de Mars – his first at the oldest racecourse in the Southern Hemisphere since his last appearance all the way back in 2001. He said he loves the country, the lifestyle and the tangible and animated passion for racing and life of the ordinary Mauritian people. He concedes he even considered acquiring a property on the island. But he is less complimentary about some of the racing folk, and said bluntly that it seemed that fingers had to be pointed and blame absolutely had to be leveraged every time a horse didn’t produce what was expected. “The Stipes have their job to do and as a professional jockey you learn to accept and respect that fact. While I don’t necessarily agree with their decision and findings on Man From Seattle, that led to my fine and suspension, I ride under their rules and have no choice but to accept it and move on. But looking at it broadly, I must admit that I experienced

nasty people and bad losers. Money, as in most areas of life, was probably at the root of it and it made the whole experience sour for me. Racing by its very nature is subject to so many variables – we are dealing with flesh and blood, things go wrong, equipment goes wrong. I found it remarkable that a country so steeped in racing history had so many bad losers. It’s a great pity, and believe me, I was well aware of what happened to my colleagues in the past – so wasn’t going in blind when I set out in May,” he added. The top jockey said that he had reached a point of going stale prior to taking up his Mauritius contract. “The economic realities dictate that the smaller yards are getting smaller – and the bigger yards are getting bigger. The younger guys coming up through the ranks are hard working and hungrier – a lot of them have talent too. So from the days when I would phone and get 60% of the ride choices – and even the second choices would be accepted elsewhere, and I would ride them too, I now have the fourth choices – if I’m lucky!” he said early in May.

The twice divorced Dad’s days of travelling far and wide to chase championships are also over. He says that racing is a fickle sport – people write one off quickly. With his support waning he reflected that experiencing the rejection over and over, and being emotionally knocked back all the time, was soul destroying and ‘not good for anybody’. So Mauritius came along at the right moment and was an opportunity to reinvigorate his mind and career.

Striker said it has sharpened him up dramatically – and proved a good refresher crash course for a veteran of the track. “As our guys will experience in Hong Kong, the races are run faster. They are quicker out the stalls. You need to be razor sharp. The stiping is stricter and so they have to be to ensure optimal safety. But take Cape Town, as a local example. The jockeys jump out and cut each other off to squeeze into position. It seems to be regarded as acceptable. Try it at your peril in Mauritius or Hong Kong!” he smiled. But he says that the Mauritius rollercoaster had the adrenalin pumping and all senses on full alert. Something he feels will stand him in good stead on his return next week. “Look, I have children at school, a mortgage to pay and a life to live. So I am keen and hungry and have had a few phone calls from trainers. So that is encouraging. I have kept myself fit with spinning sessions and race-riding fitness will come. I had always aimed at stepping down at 45. That all changed when my children came along. Now 55 remains a moving target. I have plenty of time to win a few more Gr1’s and take on the young guns,” he laughed. Pieré Johan Strydom is the eldest of 5 children and was born in Port Elizabeth on 7 June 1966. The likes of Glen Hatt, Robbie Fradd, Nicholas Shearer, Eric Chelin and Hemant Ramlugaan were his classmates at the SA Jockey Academy. Piere rode his first winner on Saadabad at Scottsville in 1982. We welcome back a living legend of the game!

Diego Off Singapore Success The Mark For Le Grange

T

South African jockey Diego de Gouveia stepped into massive boots when he took over the post vacated by multiple champion jockey Piere Strydom at the Rameshwar Gujadhur yard just a week ago.

he talented 2019 Gr1 Cape Derbywinning rider showed his balance and strength in the finish when he extricated an extra ounce of enthusiasm out of former Sean Tarry-trained stakes winner Barrack Street to register his first win on the island in double quick time. This was his only his sixth ride on the island. The much anticipated duel between Barrack Street and Henry Tudor went all the way down to the wire in the Apex Group 15th Aniversary Trophy, with Diego getting one over fellow Gauteng-based rider Randall Simons, who ended the day with a beautifully taken double to take his win tally to three. An elated Diego told the Sporting Post on Sunday that he was thrilled to have broken the ice – and equalled the 990m course record in the process. “I am glad that I have got the first winner behind me. I am enjoying it here and while it is a different lifestyle, we are adapting quickly,” he added when touching on the adventure that he and long-time girlfriend Jamie-Lee Oliveira have undertaken. The Klawervlei Stud bred Barrack Street was a R500 000 2016 CTS Lanzerac Ready To Run sale graduate. He is by Dynasty out of Laptop Lady – and thus a half brother to ill-fated Equus champion racer and sire Jay Peg (Camden Park).

T

South African trainer Ricardo Le Grange’s high opinion of Field Marshal was given another boost following a second win from as many starts at Kranji in Singapore on Friday night.

he New Zealandbred three-year-old by Sweet Orange made a thrilling winning debut under Le Grange’s apprentice jockey Krisna Thangamani, getting up by a nose in a Restricted Maiden race over 1200m on turf on July 28, carrying only 50kgs. Le Grange raised the ante by stepping up the Middle Kingdom Stable-owned galloper in the $75,000 Novice race over 1200m, this time around on Polytrack. The switch in surface was not the biggest worry. He was going to cross swords with other impressive debut winners like Diamond Ring and Coming Through while last week’s winner Lord Of Light and laststart winner The Nutter were nothing to sneeze at either. The 51.5kgs handicap was a big shot in the arm, though, and an ounce of luck in the running went a long way towards Field Marshal laying down the law for a second time. Well ridden into a railshugging position by lightweight jockey Ben Thompson, Field

Marshal was always well poised in a striking decision, around three lengths off leader and favourite Diamond Ring (Daniel Moor). At the top of the straight, Thompson, however, elected to peel his mount out when he could have sweated for a rails gap, but bumped into Coming Through (Alysha Collett) at the 300m as he came out. For a horse with so little exposure to racing, such impeded runs could have snuffed his lights out, but he maintained his composure and a strong gallop to gain the upperhand on the top pick, who even lost second place to Angel’s Choice (Yusoff Fadzli) by a head. The winning margin was half-alength and the winning time was 1min 11.92secs for the 1200m on the Polytrack. Field Marshal has already recouped his price tag of NZ60,000 as a two-year-old having now pocketed around $80,000 in prizemoney for the Middle Kingdom Stable, which together with its affiliation with the Ultima Racing Stable, the new sponsor of Friday's Gr3 El Dorado Classic (2000m), gave their usual rapturous welcome to the winner at the weigh-in.

Whyte Lightning! Douglas Whyte had only one runner on the Sha Tin card on Sunday but Hong Kong’s newest trainer made it count as Big Fortune powered away in the Class 4 Tung Wah Group Of Hospitals Challenge Cup Handicap. RIDDEN BY Alberto Sanna, the son of Moshe broke well and made all to give Whyte his first cup race victory and the second win of his training career, remarkably from only eight runners for a 25% strike rate. “It’s going to sit well on the mantelpiece, my first cup ever. Again, it’s not about the class of the race, it’s about the particular horse that’s let down for me today,” Whyte said. The 13-time champion jockey, 47, is utilising his talents in the saddle to aid the training of his horses and admitted the five-year-old has not been the most straightforward stable acquisition. “He’s proved a bit of a difficult horse in that he has been too keen. I think in some of his races it proved that he’s over-raced maybe and he doesn’t tend to hit the line as strongly as he can,” the South African said. The win, meanwhile, was Sanna’s first success since 16 June, ending a three-month run of outs after returning from two injuries.

Millard Eyes Big One

WITH US$20 million on offer, the Saudi Cup on 29 February will be the world’s richest race, and, while conceding that his charge Elusive State needs to keep improving to earn a place, Hong Kong-based Tony Millard remains upbeat. Millard and jockey Joao Moreira, who rode a treble at Sha Tin on Sunday, had to settle for second place with Elusive State, first-up over a distance short of his best in the Class 2 Po Yan Handicap– Big Time Baby won the contest for trainer Manfred Man and jockey Matthew Chadwick. But Millard is optimistic that his improved six-year-old can continue progressing towards an ambitious international target. “I didn’t expect him to run that well but in another two strides he’s there. He never had a break the whole race but he still ran on and that’s just his class and he could be

an international horse. He needs a little help to get him to Dubai and what’s also been thrown into the field now is the new race in Saudia Arabia,” Millard said. “No-one wants to say he’s that good at this stage but what’s good about the Saudi race is that it’s over 1800m – and that is exactly what Elusive State wants. He’s the type of horse who’s progressive and if we can get him in the right spot you never know what might happen,” he said. The $20m Saudi Cup, to be run at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Riyadh is now the world’s richest race. The prize for the winning horse will be US$10,000,000 with finishers down to 10th place sharing another US$10 000 000 between them. The Saudi Cup will take its place on the international calendar and will be run four weeks after the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park, and four weeks prior the Dubai World Cup at Meydan.

T

East Cape champion trainer Alan Greeff’s record-breaking win tally of 176 last season was a long-standing benchmark held by his good friend and arch-rival, Gavin Smith.

he two yards have dominated the East Cape racing landscape for 25 years. Greeff was awarded an outstanding achievement acknowledgement for his feat, while

Smith was also acknowledged for having held the previous record of 150 winners for 13 long seasons. Hollywoodbets sponsored Gavin Smith, whose smart Hooves Of Troy was crowned champion 2yo male, was both surprised

and pleased with his award and congratulated Alan Greeff on his top season. Gavin took over from his Dad Andy in 1995. A champion in his own right, Andy passed away in 2014 at the age of 76 after years of ill health. “It’s always an honour to be acknowledged and it was a wonderful evening amongst colleagues and friends. But I’d like to give a special mention of appreciation and a word of congratulations to Joyce Burggraaf, who travelled all the way to Port Elizabeth from Saudi Arabia to collect the award for Champion 2yo Colt / Gelding for Hooves Of Troy. That’s a long round trip and it’s a reflection of a passion and interest for this great game. They have a really lovely 3yo in Hooves Of Troy and we are set for a good season.” Bred by Hartley SA, the son of Vercingetorix went through the ring for just R60 000 at the KZN Yearling Sale Hooves Of Troy is out of the seven-time winning Mogok mare, Secret Magok. Gavin Smith loves the horse – “He’s a dead ringer for probably the best horse I trained, called Bold Silvano!”

With a small string at his disposal, it’s been a while in coming. But longstanding former workrider and assistant to the late Ronnie Sheehan, Peter Wrensch opened his account as a trainer with a game win by the 3yo Captain Garett in the opener at Kenilworth on Saturday.

The East Cape Racing Awards for the 2018/19 season were held at a function at Fairview Racecourse on Wednesday evening. In what must have been a unanimous choice, the Yvette Bremnertrained Gauteng Guineas winner National Park was voted Horse Of The Year. Also clinching the 3yo colt/gelding trophy, he is a son of Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) out of six-time winner, Fancy Park (Camden Park). A R240 000 National Yearling Sale purchase, National Park was bred by Knysna-based Rob Knuppe’s Missing U Syndicate, who also races the gelding in partnership with Hedley McGrath, Bryn Ressell and Mark Wright. National Park has not seen action since May, when he chased Twist Of Fate home in the KZN Guineas at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

Top Racing Man Passes Away Veteran Gauteng trainer Brian Wiid passed away in the Union Hospital last Friday. He suffered a stroke over a week ago but was reported to be making progress. The 72 year old Brian trained racehorses for 45 years and conditioned some top horses, including the likes of champion sprinter Knife Edge and Summer Handicap winner, the Jean Heming ‘chuck out’, Cardinal Fury. won seven Gr1 races in four different countries and who was Horse Of The Year in Europe in 1999, Daylami has left behind 14 stakes winners from 542 runners - 3% of his runners winning black type races - with his progeny headed by Irish Derby winning sire, Grey Swallow, and Italian champion and Gr1 Premio Roma winner, Voila Ici. His multiple Gr1 winning son, Grey Swallow (also victorious in the Gr1 Tattersalls Gold Cup) has failed to make much of an impact at stud – from more than 80 runners in Australasia, thr now USA-based Grey Swallow failed to leave behind a single stakes winner, although his daughter. Ungrateful Ellen. did finish second to none other than Winx (Street Cry) in the 2015 Gr1 Queensland Oaks. In South Africa, Daylami sired 88 registered foals, but they included just a single stakes winner in the form of Gr3 Diana Stakes/Gr3 Victress Stakes winner, Super Elegant. Another daughter, Kalami, did finish a head second in the Gr1 SA Fillies Classic of 2012.

Broodmare Boom Daylami

T

Outstanding racehorse, Daylami, who stood in South Africa briefly, could be on track for British classic success as a broodmare sire this coming weekend.

he son of 2000 Guineas winner Doyoun (a halfbrother to former KZN sire Dolpour) is damsire of unbeaten threeyear-old, Logician (Frankel), who currently tops the betting for Saturday’s William Hill St Leger the fifth and final British classic to be run this year. A very impressive winner of the Gr2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes last time out, and now unbeaten in four starts, Logician has been given quotes ranging from 6-5 to 11-8 to land the 2019 St Leger. The oldest of all five British classic races, the St Leger is set to be run at Doncaster on September 14th.

Logician is out of the Daylami sired Scuffle, a three time winner who ran third in the Listed Snowdrop Stakes, during a brief racing career. Logician is the second pattern race winner produced by Scuffle to date, with the mare , a half-sister to Gr1 winner, Cityscape, and hot sire, Bated Breath, having also produced triple graded stakes winner, and Gr1 E.P. Taylor Stakes runner up, Suffused the latter by Champs Elysees.

Different Ball-Game Daylami, whose daughter, Madonna Lily, is dam of this year’s Gr1 Prix de Diane third, Grand Glory (Olympic Glory), has been a considerably more successful broodmare sire than Asire. His outstanding half-brother, Dalakhani, was a far better sire, and is also now enjoying success as a broodmare sire. An exceptional racehorse, who

In contrast to this rather ordinary record, especially in light of the quality of mare he received, Daylami is compiling a steadily consistent record as a broodmare sire. While Logician could well rate up there with the best of progeny produced by Daylami mares, he is by no means the only significant performer produced by a Daylami daughter. At the time of writing, Daylami is damsire of more than 30 black type performers, and his presence remains to the fore in Australia, thanks to the exploits of his outstanding maternal grandson, Pierro (Lonhro). Australia’s Champion 2YO Of 20112012, Pierro won 11 of his 14 races, with his five GR1 victories including the 2012 Golden Slipper. Since retiring to Coolmore in 2013, Pierro - who currently sports a stud fee of A$88 000 has made a considerable impact and was Australia’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2016-2017. To date, he has been responsible for 260 runners, of which 17 have won black type races, with Pierro’s star performers including the Gr1 winners Pinot, Levendi, Pierata and Arcadia Queen, as well as Hong Kong Derby victor, Furore. In South Africa, Pierro’s handful of runners includes July contender and Gr3 Track And Ball Derby winner, Roy Had Enough.

Pierro, very closely related to dual Gr1 winner, Laverock (by Lonhro’s sire Octagonal) is out of the dual winning Daylami daughter, Miss Right Note, whose three other winners include Grr2 Wakeful Stakes winner and Gr1 Australian Oaks runner up Ambience (Street Cry). Another Gr1 winning two-year-old produced by a Daylami mare, who has enjoyed success as a stallion this year is former Prix Morny winner, Arcano (Oasis Dream). The sire of nearly 30 black type performers to date, Arcano is the sire of recent Gr3 Prix de Meautry winner, Spinning Memories, who is being aimed at the Gr1 Prix de l’Abbaye and Hong Kong Sprint. Other group winners sired by Arcano include Just Glamorous, Tajaanus, Abel Handy, and Italian champion Kathy Dream.

French Flair One of Daylami’s most prolific

daughters is the French stakes placed, Roscof, the dam of 3 black type performers thus far, including Italian champion, Hero Look (Lope De Vega) and the latter ‘s smart 3yo full-sister, Manuela de Vega. The latter captured the Silver Tankard Stakes at two, and ran fourth in the 2019 Gr1 Investec Oaks. Multiple group winner, James Garfield (Exceed And Excel), who is now standing at the Rathbarry Stud in Ireland, is out of Daylami’s Chesham Stakes winning daughter, Whazzat. James Garfield won the Gr2 Mill Reef Stakes at two and G3 Greenham Stakes at three, before finishing second in the Gr1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Daylami’s granddaughters are also now coming to the party and making their presence felt. Talented four-year-old, Mrs. Sippy (Blame), who won the recent Gr2 Glen Falls Stakes, is out of the stakes winning Encosta De Lago mare, Qushchi, herself in turn out of a daughter of Daylami.

Jackson Double Brett Crawford and Ridgemont Highlands rider Greg Cheyne were in a rich vein of form at Kenilworth on Saturday. Two legs of Cheyne’s personal treble presented a double for Ridgemont’s triple Gr1 winning sire, Jackson.

BOTH OF THE Jackson winners race in the dark green, blue and white of Ridgemont Racing and look like fillies with a bright future. Crawford also trained Jackson. First up was Flame Tree, a Highlands and Georgina Jaffee bred half-sister to recent Gold Cup winner Dynasty’s Blossom. Easy to back, Flame Tree produced a professional performance to beat yet another Jackson daughter in Blue Gangsta in the third race, a maiden 1400m. Jackson’s daughter Pretty Young Thing was a facile winner of the last race, with Cheyne just pointing her to post. Bred by Highlands, she is out of the twice winning Commands mare, Nona In Command and made it two wins (both over the Kenilworth 1400) from five starts.

His son Global View’s first crop sold up to R1,3 million this year!

GLOBAL VIEW – (Galileo x Egyptian Queen by STORM CAT)

Trainer Brett Crawford indicated afterwards that the Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship on 26 October will be Pretty Young Thing’s target. A half brother to Gr3 winning sprinter Jade Bay and full-brother to Gr3 Byerley Turk winner Heartland, Jackson hails from the immediate family of multiple champion sire Smart Strike – whose son Lookin At Lucky is the sire of this year’s Kentucky Derby winner Country House. The best classic horse in SA in 2013, the handsome and athletic Jackson has made a god start with some decent stakes performers. He stands for a fee of R15 000. A review of the week's best SPEEDRATINGS

Star Performance Hollywoodbets Greyville 1 September They raced on the poly track on Sunday where victory in the fastest of the three 1600m races that got proceedings underway, went to the easy to back PLYMOUTH ROCK. Freely available at 14/1 to win the MR78 Handicap, Doug Campbell’s charge raced in the rear during the early part of the race. He ran on strongly when the race developed into a sprint in the short home straight and after striking the front 100m from home he just held on by the narrowest of margins from the 9yo NICKLAUS. Beaten just over a length into third, the hat-trick seeking WHAT A BLAST was positioned at the back turning for home and was baulked twice in the straight. Race six on the card was a MR82 Handicap over 1400m and in a time no faster than that of the maiden plate over the distance we saw an impressive performance from STAR VEGA. At the back of the eleven coming off the bend, the lightly raced daughter of Oratorio cut through the field like a knife in the straight and won going away by a length and a quarter, after striking the front 50m from home. Another to win well on this card was ANCIENT SPIRIT in the faster of the two 1200m events, a MR92 Handicap. Backed into favouritism at the track, this fastnet Rock mare was visibly cruising throughout. She took up the running shortly after passing the 400m marker and won going away by three and a half. TITBITS Lightly raced ARRABIATA ran on well from the backend of midfield when a 1,1 length runner up in the maiden plate for the girls over 1600m.

Queen For The Day

Fairview 2 September Monday’s action took place on the poly track where five of the afternoon’s eight races were staged over 1600m. The MR66 Handicap for the girls was the fastest of these and here the well-supported outsider OASIS QUEEN (12/1 into 13/2) registered her sixth career victory. Running on stoutly from off the pace, the column’s top rated selection struck the front 150m out and won going away by three. Another to win very easily on this card was ONTENDERHOOKS in the graduation plate over 1800m. Always handy in a race where there was no pace at all early on, the former Cape Town campaigner cruised clear in the short home straight and came home lonely by five. A MR82 Handicap over 1600m topped the bill and in a time over half a second slower than that of Oasis Queen, the 7yo SAO PAULO took her tally of wins to five. In the rear along with the runner up DOUBLE BLACK turning for home, the Trippi mare finished the strongest late and got up in the very last stride. TITBITS At the back turning for home, VICTORY MARCH ran on best of all when comfortably accounting for his ten rivals in the MR68 Handicap over 1600m.

Easy For Succession Turffontein 3 September Four of the eight races on the old stand side track on Tuesday afternoon took place over 1600m and in the fastest of these, a MR84 Handicap, we saw a smart front running performance from the 4yo daughter of Philanthropist VIRGINIA. A length clear for most of the journey, Alec Laird’s charge asserted her authority over the final 400m and ran out a comfortable winner by two and three quarters. Two maiden plates for 3yo’s opened up proceedings and in the faster of these, the boy’s affair, we saw an eye catching performance from the lightly raced SUCCESSION. Returning from a four months break here, the son of Captain Al led throughout. He had only to be pushed out over the final 400m and won with plenty in hand by three and three quarters. The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1000m where the faster of the two handicaps was the MR84 affair won by the easy to back NICKY NOO. Freely available at 36/1 in a seven runner field at the off, the Horse Chestnut mare was soon

Couple To Follow Kenilworth 4 September

We saw some smart performances in Cape Town on Wednesday and none more so than that of SACHDEV in the fastest of the four 1200m events, a MR82 Handicap. Confidently ridden by Richard Fourie, the Silvano gelding raced in the backend of midfield early on. He produced a nice turn of foot below the distance and won going away by two after striking the front just 60m or so from home. Race four on the card was a maiden plate over 1800m and here we saw an impressive performance from the 3yo Dynasty colt BLACK KNAP. Having only his second career outing here, Vaughan Marshall’s charge was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 300m marker and cruised clear in the closing stages of the race to score by nine and a quarter.

The MR80 Handicap over 1600m was not surprisingly the faster of the two 1600m races on the card and here we saw a very comfortable victory for the consistent son of Jay Peg JAY ROCK. Nicely positioned in second when the race began in earnest, Glen Puller’s charge put his head in front early in the short old course home straight and won well by a length and a quarter from the well-supported odds on favourite CANE LIME ‘N SODA. TITBITS Ridden to lead 400m out, KELPIE only had to be pushed out when winning the maiden plate for the girls over 1600m with authority by three and a quarter.

Unbeaten In Two

Turffontein 5 September They raced on the inner track on Thursday where once again the course at Turffontein was running a little fast. Four of the eight races were staged over 1450m and in the fastest of these, a MR76 Handicap, MELCHIZEDEK registered a second victory. Not the quickest into stride when the gates opened, Paul Peter’s charge raced in the rear early on. He quickened well coming off the strip and under a well-judged ride from Mathew Thackeray he got up late to deny the nibbled at outsider ROYAL CITY. 2600m was the only other distance to stage more than one race and in the faster of the two handicaps, the MR70 affair, the veteran CRANBERRY CRUSH took her tally of wins to five. Soon at the head of affairs, the Kahal mare kept on doggedly at the business end of the race and got the verdict by a half over the determined GLAMOROUS SCANDAL. Finishing best of all, third placed MERENGUE didn’t find the clearest of passages in the closing stages of this race. TALLINN in the MR76 Handicap over 1450m was the best bet on the card for most and the daughter of Vercingetorix didn’t let down her supporters. A fluent winner of her only previous racecourse appearance, Mike De Kock’s charge was soon up handy. She was ridden to lead as they approached the 300m pole and won with some in hand from the running on KAPAMA. TITBITS Pitched in against a rather moderate bunch, top weighted SEGONTIUM won the maiden handicap over 1450m a little more easily than the official winning margin of a length and a quarter would suggest.

positioned close to the speed. She was ridden to lead as they approached the 300m marker and went on to score with authority by three and a half from the rank outsider of the party MERCER GIRL (44/1). TITBITS Beaten five lengths into fourth, lightly raced MARMARA SEA caught the eye running on nicely at the finish of the maiden 1600m.
