A non black-type feature tops the weekend national billing at Fairview on Friday. The fillies and mares Walmer Handicap has attracted a field of nine and should prove a competitive puzzle to unravel.

ocal champion trainer Alan Greeff has a powerful threecornered hand for the 1800m contest, with recent Listed Jockey Club Stakes winner Meryl out for a double after her breathtaking victory last time out. The daughter of Tiger Ridge was left on a 101 rating by the NHRA handicappers after getting up in the final stride to beat Raven Girl. That run capped an excellent second on her East Cape debut and she is being kept in training for another season – a sign that she is loving her racing and will be very competitive. Charles Ndlovu, who rode such a pearler to win last time, is in the saddle again. She takes her time to find her feet and the change of surface and the 200m drop in trip are the only cautionaries for us. Her stablemate Ontenderhooks, formerly with Candice Bass-Robinson, found her feet at just her third run in the Eastern Cape with a runaway success over Friday’s course-anddistance. This is tougher and Meryl stands in her way as a major centre stakes winner. The SP top-rated, Jacques Strydom’s hardknocking 7yo Sao Paulo bounced back from an unsuccessful Flamingo Park raid early in August, when she ran

on well to beat Double Black over the poly mile on 2 September. She tries the 1800m for the first time, but it is worth noting that her wellperformed dam won up to 2000m. Flying Squadron had no luck in the Jockey Club Stakes when cramped in running and being forced to ease. She has had four runs in this region and won her first start on the polytrack – so may warrant inclusion if she steps up further on the surface. Seeking Wisdom ran a poor race in the Listed Jockey Club Stakes and dropped out to finish close on 24 lengths off Meryl. There was no official explanation for that strange effort and she could bounce back if finding her best form. Delia’s Delight challenged strongly in the Jockey Club Stakes and was beaten a shade over a length into fourth behind Meryl. Her previous poly run was slightly below par. She is 3kgs better off with Meryl and must be a serious runner. Former KZN-based Dean Kannemeyer charge Pearl Glow showed promising earlier form but has not run for 29 weeks and has her first run in the Eastern Cape.

Rocksette appears to have lost her better form of 2018 and was reported not striding out last time – that was only a fortnight ago. Lateral’s Flash is the third of the handily weighted 52kg crew and the Gavin Smith charge loves the allweather surface. She ran on steadily behind Ontenderhooks last time and

even though well beaten by 4,50 lengths, she comes in on 4,5kgs better terms and should be held again. If she doesn’t get found too far out of her ground, Meryl looks likely to follow up. The dangers are Sao Paulo and Ontenderhooks.

Fast Donkeys & Slow Cars The Friday feature is named for Walmer, a suburb of Port Elizabeth. The connection to racing is not clear, although it is an area that was well known for its donkeys. Until the 1940s, they were still freely wandering around Walmer and were raced through the valley by school children. Research shows that the area has a colourful history dating to 1855 when it was renamed after Walmer Castle, seat of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. This is a historic series of coastal towns in Kent and Sussex which were originally formed for military and trade purposes. William Adcock, the first mayor of Walmer, was quite a man about town and he had the distinction of being the first person to own a motor car in PE. It was a 4.5hp Benz Velo which took 15 hours to make the 128km trip to Grahamstown. The coming of the train line to Walmer on Saturday 15 December 1906 saw 5000 people sample the new transport that day, despite bad weather. Walmer was incorporated into the Port Elizabeth municipality on 1 September 1966.

Still Provisional The Gauteng feature race programme for the 2019/20 season remains provisional and is conspicuous by the gaps for the date slots on the Gallop website. This situation is unprecedented at this late stage of the game and no word has been forthcoming as to when the programme is likely to be finalised – and whether wholesale changes are anticipated. The next Turffontein feature meeting, scheduled for 5 October, comprises the R350 000 apiece Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge and the Gr2 Joburg Spring F & M Challenge, both run at weight-forage plus penalties over 1450m. The first Gr1 of the SA racing season is the R2 million Gauteng Summer Cup which is scheduled for 30 November. First entries for this prestigious handicap are due on Wednesday 25 September. Weights will be published after second entries on Monday 4 November.

Assistant Barry Donnely was quoted on Saturday suggesting that Regimental ‘was going places and should have a money chance.’ The topliner of the afternoon was a scratching decimated R140 000 Pinnacle Stakes run over 1400m. The deceptive style of East Cape Champion Greg Cheyne produced the goods as he showed cracking judgement to get Ready Steady Go home, ahead of Catkin, Zeb and the gallant Star Chestnut, who was returned from an eight month break. It was a thriller with only 0,55 lengths separating the top four. Agent Of Fortune was never in the hunt and he looks much better than this. Richard Fourie and Justin Snaith were in fine form again, with a well-taken four-timer. Fourie picked up five winners, and eight in two days after his hat-trick at Fairview on Friday!

appeared well on track for the DWC but then jarred himself on the near fore at the beginning of January this year. Dean Kannemeyer said he was thrilled that the talented athlete would be back on track. “I was chatting to Dr John Mcveigh recently. He had the opportunity to have a look at Last Winter in the flesh a few weeks ago and was very happy with him and says that he was moving well. It’s a tough little

race and he has been off for a while, and it will be great to see him come through it well.” Last Winter only raced six times here, winning his first four on the trot. He was then stepped up in the Gr2 Premier Trophy in December 2017, where he was beaten a nostril by a clever Gavin Lerena ride on the Bill Prestage handicapper, Milton. His sixth outing came in the Sun Met, where he made up lengths in the final 150m under Piere Strydom to he beaten a half length by subsequent SA Horse Of The Year, Oh Susanna. After last Wednesday’s horrific Hollywoodbets Scottsville accident, KZN racing operator Gold Circle issued a press release denying the fact that a wet patch and divots were to blame.

et on Sunday a walk of the track revealed that all is still not well and it may be time to face reality and take corrective action. The release states that following the unfortunate incident last Wednesday when two jockeys came down and the subsequent criticism of the track on public forums, Gold Circle Management, the NHA and a trainer’s representative made a thorough inspection of the track last Friday morning. The inspection team consisted of Gold Circle Racing Manager Raf Sheik, National Horse Racing Authority Chairman in KZN, Shaun Parker, trainer’s representative Paul Gadsby and Track Manager Michael Ndlovu. Ndlovu had not carried out repairs to the area where the falls occurred. After a thorough inspection of the area and surrounds there was no evidence to suggest that the track surface could be blamed on the incident. The so-called ‘hole’ or ‘wet patch’ that was reported on the day was a repaired divot that was measured 58 metres before where the incident took place and in no ways could have

been responsible for the first horse stumbling. Ndlovu rubbished claims that the track is not inspected before every race meeting. “I personally walk the track to check that the rails are correctly position and three of my staff also walk the track to check for anything untoward and take the pen readings.” “Pen readings are taken in three places across the track after 100m and the average recorded and made public. With four of us on the track before the race meeting any obvious problems would be picked up,” he said. Gadsby was satisfied that the track was not at fault, in fact he said the surface was in excellent condition. Parker was also complimentary of the track and felt that there was no way the incident could be blamed on the track. On Sunday there was another incident of a faller and a walk of the track revealed a bone dry back straight and then wet patches – a highly dangerous state of affairs, with horses having to cope with dramatic changes in surface conditions. We believe that Gold Circle are now investigating further.

Saudi Cup Drawcard THE WORLD’S RICHEST race, the US$20m Saudi Cup, will have a glittering support card for its inaugural running on 29 February 2020. Three of the five new races on the undercard will be run on a new turf course, with the other two to be run on the highly acclaimed dirt track on which the 1800m Saudi Cup itself will be contested. KEAGAN’S OKAY KZN rider Keagan de Melo is ‘very sore but seemingly fine’ after falling off his mount Silent Crusade in the sixth at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday. De Melo, who has made a good start to the term with 10 winners from 85 rides, and rode the third race winner on the afternoon, came off at the 200m mark, just when making his run. The Mark Dixon-trained Silent Crusade, who looked a likely winner, appeared to peck and lose her balance and the young rider fell head first in a shocking sight. He was rushed to hospital and subsequent x-rays revealed that he had no fractures. He will undergo a CT scan to as an extra precaution on the higher part of the spine.

Mauritius Turf Club CEO Mike Rishworth issued a press release on Monday confirming that the club is in a financial predicament which it blames on off-course bookmakers not being able to work for 27 of the 37 racing fixtures in 2019. Stakes payable on all races will be reduced by 10 percent with effect from 19 October. This represents a reduction of Rs 2 million on the remaining races for this season, and will mean that by the end of 2019 total stakes paid will be Rs 98 million - same as those paid in 2018.

AP McCoy returned to the saddle to ride a winner on Quizical in the Pat Smullen Champions Race For Cancer Trials Ireland at the Curragh on Sunday. McCoy, 45, who retired in 2015, finished ahead of old friend and rival Ruby Walsh, on Aussie Valentine. Smullen, the nine-time Irish champion flat jockey, who is being treated for pancreatic cancer, persuaded McCoy and eight other former top jockeys to come out of retirement to take part in the flat race which has raised more than 2m Euro for cancer research. He could not fulfil plans to ride himself because of his illness.

Drakenstein Stud’s four time Gr1 winning stallion What A Winter has made a blistering start to the 2019/20 season. The triple Equus Champion produced three smart winners on Saturday. West Australian apprentice Jade McNaught has written her name into the record books, becoming the ﬁrst apprentice in the west to ride six winners on the same programme. The 30-year-old, who has only been riding since May 2018, achieved the feat at Belmont on Saturday. Following her recordbreaking achievement, which now has her leading both the apprentice and senior jockey premierships on 17 winners, McNaught said she wouldn’t be aﬀected by the big day out and would remain grounded.

The trainers lounge was like a morgue. Lips were hanging on the ground, the faces were glum and the vibe was in stark contrast to the laughter and banter emanating from the jockey room.

aybe jockeys have less stress than trainers, generally. But veteran Ashburton trainer Duncan Howells suggests it’s high time to make racing fun again – it’s the reason the game started and why most people got into it in the first place. The 53 year old Winning Form-sponsored conditioner, a twice KZN Champion, says that racing is a sport and trying too hard to run it like a business is a recipe for failure. “It’s always going to be a game of chance. We are dealing with flesh and blood. If you’re not enjoying it and feel like pointing fingers every time things go pear-shaped, go play golf or something rather,” he says as he recalls his colleagues’ faces in that morbid room at the races. Fact is that Duncan is the one man who should entitled to be as miserable as sin. His yard has just come out of the worst virus that they have ever experienced. He says it’s been two years of disappointments, headscratching, frustration and agony – and plenty of questioning and more questioning. He tells how his young horses would work up a storm and then go in the wind or start bleeding. He lost a lot of youngsters as a result of the virus. “One starts to get paranoid and question your sanity! The horses are not reproducing their work on the track. Then the Vet suggests it could be the feed. The feed merchant suggests it’s not the feed - you’re just not feeding correctly. Then the whispers are out – ‘Howells has lost it – he has forgotten how to train horses’. But you know you are not doing anything differently – but then you do start wondering whether you have lost it!” he smiles as he recalls a testing stretch that is now behind him. A straight-shooting guy, who concedes to sometimes getting frustrated at the way officialdom handle apparently simple things, Duncan says that he has no excuses for not training winners being based at what

Stop Press – Flamingo Park Phumelela Gaming and Leisure confirmed as we went to print on Tuesday that it is in negotiation with Gold Circle and other interested stakeholders to extend racing at Flamingo Park Racecourse in Kimberley beyond December this year. Phumelela announced recently that it intended to cease holding race meetings at Flamingo Park after the 9 December fixture there, but potentially viable options to continue racing at the venue have surfaced since then. Phumelela CEO John Stuart said these options were now being evaluated in conjunction with Gold Circle and other stakeholders, and that more details would be released soon.

Although starting work at 04h30 and finishing after 17h30, means it’s a long day, most days. “Our training tracks are excellent and comparable with anything I have experienced anywhere. Winters are perhaps the one tough aspect of Ashburton – but nothing’s perfect and we can live with that,” he muses as he points out that in earlier years the viruses were not as prevalent as they are today. “We have a lot more traffic and movement of horses as well as new strings here, and that may well be a contributing factor to the viruses,” he contemplates as he proudly states that he took a tough decision as a seasoned professional to stop the bus and start all over again.

“Let’s be honest – its human nature to try and find blame. I’m not blaming anybody - I have gone back to basics and am feeling a lot more positive right now.” On training horses in KZN, Duncan says he wouldn’t choose to be anywhere else on earth, but would like to see them revisiting the programme and racing on turf at least once a week in the holiday province. “Horses, owners, trainers and punters need the variety and a balance between poly and turf. I am not convinced we are utilising our racecourse facilities to the optimum. I understand the need for seasonal breaks and treatment, but closing a track for three months and then exposing it to racing can cause damage. It becomes a patch of beautifully green grass, more than a racecourse in the end.” One of his bugbears is that he feels that racing generally appears to have a fear of being transparent and upfront. “When there is a problem, man up and come clean. It is the apparent lack of communication and transparency that leads to

conspiracy theories, frustration and stonethrowing on the social media forums.” While he has a few boxes open, and would welcome new horses, Duncan says that he would like to settle on a string of 50 horses. He tells of his top team of personnel – headed by himself, his partner Cathy Rymill and Dela Naidoo, a proud graduate of the Summerhill School of Equine Excellence. On any unraced lurkers in the Howells Racing string, Duncan says that he expects a few could still put up their hands. He mentions a Trippi gelding that may be worth following. Looking at the prospect of chasing the big trophies in the Cape during the forthcoming summer, he says that he would only consider travelling South if he genuinely believed he had ‘the right horse’ and that he could go down early, as he did when the Var flyer Via Africa won the 2014 Gr1 Cape Flying Championship. “I have tried the road trip ten days before the race. Eric Sands has always been a massive help. But it didn’t work as well as going down well in advance and settling in properly. I also used to be busy managing a big string at home – I would be happy to take our chances whether this season or in future – but, as I say, on the right terms, with the right horse.” One of the most experienced and knowledgeable men in the game, Duncan’s first runner was a winner. Her name was Whispering Magic. It was the opening day of the 1999/2000 season, and his now Summerveld-based colleague Robbie Hill did the riding honours in the pre-polytrack days at Greyville. Still staunch supporters today, Avison and Mary Carlisle were his first owners Duncan was always destined to follow a life with horses and was born into a racing family. His track record dates back to his years as a leading amateur jockey and his first job with Eric Sands at Milnerton. He lists his late Uncle Andy Smith (father of his cousin and top PE trainer Gavin), Roy Curling, Eric Sands and the now Australiabased David Payne as some of the biggest influences on his career. On his best horses, Duncan doesn’t hesitate that Mogok’s daughter Gypsy’s Warning ‘was really brilliant!’ Zeeno providing him with his first Gr1 success in the 2006 Gold Medallion at Scottsville was an inspirational turning point in his career. His other Gr1’s include the brilliant Gypsy’s Warning victory in the 2008 Thekwini Stakes at Clairwood – his favourite racecourse. Dual Gr1 champion Same Jurisdiction won the same race six years later, while Lauderdale completed Duncan’s treble in 2015. Via Africa won the SA Fillies Sprint in 2013 and 2014, as well as the Cape Flying Championship in that memorable summer seven months later. Grant Off The Mark Cape-based jockey Grant van Niekerk arrived at Sha Tin on Sunday with a zero in his season’s win column. He rectified that situation with victory in the afternoon’s second trophy contest, the Class 4 Chinese Recreation Club Challenge Cup Handicap run over 1400m. “I’M GLAD the monkey’s off my back,” he said after guiding the Ricky Yiu-trained Simple Elegant to victory. “With the new jockeys and with Joao (Moreira) becoming a Club rider this season, things are competitive. I can feel it with the rides I’ve been getting I’ve had to battle for them. It hasn’t been tough, it’s just I wasn’t riding great horses at the last couple of meetings. I do believe that if I get the chance, I can get the job done too.” The South African overcame gate 11, grabbed the lead, rolled along and kicked down the straight to a length and a quarter success in a Class record time of 1m 21.15s. Champion trainer John Size was another to notch his first score of the term. Moreira was the man who made sure Monkey Jewellery’s head was first past the post in the Class 4 Sunbird Handicap run over 1200m. Trainer Ricardo Le Grange was repaid manifold for his decision to entrust hard-working apprentice jockey Krisna Thangamani with a first ride on Polytrack specialist Pennywise at Kranji on Friday night.

e Grange’s Malaysian apprentice does all the hard yards on the Argentinian-bred son of Pure Prize, but for some reason, never got a chance to partner him in a race. Better late than never, as when that opportunity finally came his way in the SG$85,000 Class 2 race over 1000m at the six-time winner’s (all on Polytrack) 16th start, Krisna did not let it go begging. Despite cutting the breeze three to four wide, Pennywise stuck on gamely inside the last furlong with his rider coaxing him to the line at a balanced rhythm, along with a few wellsynchronised smacks on the rump. “I have to thank Bernard Kantor. It’s his big birthday in a couple of days (70 on 27

September), and he and Pat Shaw (Le Grange’s ex mentor for 16 years at Kranji before he took over him) are in Portugal celebrating with other friends,” said Le Grange. “I’m also very happy for Krisna. For two years he only rode trackwork on this horse and never got a chance to sit on him in a race. Tonight, he got the chance and he gave him a great ride. Yes, they were trapped wide, but Krisna kept him rolling and they were nice and strong to the line. Krisna rides this horse every morning in trackwork because he’s been a handful. He dropped Barend Vorster and Nooresh Juglall before, but Krisna gets along well with him and has done all the hard work on him.” Following that seventh Polytrack win, Pennywise has now taken his prizemoney level past the SG$330,000 mark for Kantor.

Logician maintained his unbeaten record to win the prestigious St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday and give jockey Frankie Dettori his sixth win in the Gr1 race.

THE 5-6 FAVOURITE won by four lengths to give trainer John Gosden his fifth success at the meeting. The BBC reports that Sir Ron Priestley, ridden by 49-year-old Franny Norton, finished second with 40-1 shot Nayef Road in third. The one-mile-and-six-furlong race was Logician’s fifth win in succession. “He’s amazing. He’s the favourite. There are 30,000 people here and he delivered. It’s great for the sport,” Dettori told ITV Racing. “He’s not short on speed. He’s only run five times and it’s a good horse to have, with plenty to come. Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who had three horses in the field, was aiming for a third win in three years, but his best place was Sir Dragonet in fourth. Dettori’s five previous wins in the showpiece race came in 1995, 1996, 2005, 2006 and 2008. The Juddmonte Farms-bred Logician (GB) is by Frankel (GB) out of the Daylami mare, Scuffle (GB). He is unbeaten in five starts.

A daughter of Galileo and a full sister to Bush Hill Stud’s Flying The Flag, Magical landed a gamble to provide Aidan O’Brien with a remarkable 1-23 in in the QIPCO Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on day one of Longines Irish Champions Weekend on Saturday.

The well-backed favourite was perfectly positioned throughout under Ryan Moore to pounce coming into the straight and establish a racewinning move, though backers of Deirdre will wonder what might have happened had she enjoyed a clear run. RTE reports that the first Japanese-trained horse to run in Ireland was caught in last place when the race developed and, pulled out by rider Oisin Murphy, flashed home to finish fourth. However, the 11-10 favourite Magical still won readily by two and a quarter lengths. Having finished second to Enable three times over the past 12 months, the mare was finally happy to meet a field that did not include that other star mare. Magic Wand was second, Anthony Van Dyk third as O’Brien won his first Champion Stakes since 2011, but his domination was remarkable, as he also won three of the first four races.

Hollywoodbets Greyville 8 September Sunday’s action took place on the poly track where victory in the opening maiden plate over 1100m went to the 4yo Pathfork gelding GENTLEMAN’S WAY. Beaten almost 20 lengths in his only previous outing some 68 weeks earlier, Dennis Bosch’s charge was not surprisingly very easy to back in the betting market. He got away well when the gates opened and soon up handy raced prominent throughout. He got the better of the favourite QUANT MASTER 50m out and won going away by 0,3 lengths. Three of the afternoon’s eight races were run over 2000m and stopping the clock in the fastest of these was PRINCESS ANALIA when winning the MR74 Handicap. Another to race handy, Frank Robinson’s charge took up the running early in the straight and in what proved to be a real thriller she held on in a three way finish by a quarter. The MR78 Handicap was the faster of the two 1000m races and here victory went to the rapidly improving 3yo PRINCE OF VENICE. Now a winner of two from three, this son of Vercingetorix sat fourth during the early part of the race. He ran on strongly over the final 400m and went on to score a bit more easily than the official winning margin of just half a length would suggest. TITBITS Now a winner of two from four, FAVOUR completed a double over the course and distance when running on from the backend of midfield to win the MR78 Handicap over 2000m.

Durbanville 10 September With a strong tail wind the track at the country course was running fast on Tuesday. The MR90 Handicap proved to be the faster of the two 1000m races on the card and here the 4yo BELLINGHAM BAY completed a double. Soon positioned close to the speed, Eric Sands’ charge put his head in front 150m out and kept on strongly late to beat the always handy SKIDOO by a half-length. Third placed RIO QUERARI raced at the back of the nine turning for home and finished best of all in this race. The bill topping MR100 Handicap was the fastest of the three 1600m races and here victory went to the second favourite SECRET DEPTHS. Always handy, the daughter of Elusive Fort was ridden to lead going through the 400m and with the benefit of first run she got the better of the running on favourite SLEEPING SINGLE by just under a half. The opening maiden plate over 1000m was priced up as a boat race between BROADSIDE and GOLDEN TRACTOR and so it proved to be. They raced first and second in that order throughout and were together over the final 200m. They drew some six lengths clear of the remainder and it was only very late that Broadside asserted his authority. TITBITS

The newcomer BINDI had the field well strung out at the finish when comfortably accounting for her ten rivals in the maiden plate for the girls over 1250m.

With the other two races over the distance being maiden plates, the bill topping pinnacle stakes won by the lightly weighted EFFORTLESS REWARD was not surprisingly the fastest of the three 1000m races. Set to shoulder the featherweight of just 46kg with the benefit of apprentice Ramzan’s 4kg allowance, the Reward For Effort mare led throughout. She raced two lengths clear for most of the journey and that proved to be only just enough to hold off the always handy GOLIATH HERON by a short head. The MR74 Handicap was by far the faster of the two 1750m events and here we saw an impressive performance from the heavily supported DANCING FEATHER. An easy four length winner of her maiden last time out, this daughter of Duke Of Marmalade was soon cosily positioned in third. She took up the running early in the straight and after quickly skipping clear she won very well by four. A maiden plate over 1000m had gotten proceedings underway and here we saw a comfortable victory for the Corinne Bestel trained MYSTIC

Marshalling The Troops Turffontein 12 September They raced on the inner track on Thursday where we saw a smart performance in the faster of the two 1600m events (a MR72 Handicap) from the progressive MARSHALL. Far from extended when opening his account on debut last time out, Mike De Kock’s charge again raced handy. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 300m marker and went on to score with authority from the well-exposed PELICAN BAY. Another to win in good style on this card was MY DREAM CHASER when registering her third career victory in the bill topping MR92 Handicap over 1800m. Content to race in the rear of what proved to be the fastest of the three races over the distance, David Nieuwenhuizen’s charge cut

through the field like a knife in the short home straight and won going away by three and a half after striking the front 200m from home. They also ran three races over 1450m and quickest home amongst these was EHSAAN in the MR88 Handicap. Always handy, this 3yo son of Captain Al ran on strongly at the business end of the race and held off a determined challenge from LONE SURVIVOR to score by a half. TITBITS Making his debut in what looked to be a fair maiden event over 1450m, the newcomer RIVERSTOWN cruised clear in the straight to score decisively by three and three quarters.

Change As Good As A Rest Fairview 13 September They raced on the poly track on Friday where a half of the afternoon’s eight races were staged over 1200m. The pinnacle stakes was the fastest of these and here victory went to the heavily supported SIR FRENCHIE. Backed into the red before the off, Yvette Bremner’s charge raced in the backend of midfield for most of the journey. He quickened best of all from halfway and won with plenty in hand after striking the front 200m out. 1900m was the only other distance to stage more than one race. The MR62 Handicap was comfortably the quicker of the two and here victory went to the well-supported SALUBRIOUS. Always handy, the daughter of Golden Sword took up the running 250m out and went on to score with authority from the in-form OASIS QUEEN. There were a number of very easy victories on the card and none more so than that of TOLTEC in the MR82 Handicap. Having his first outing since relocating to the Eastern Cape, Toltec was soon positioned close to the speed. He put his head in front early in the short home straight and cruised clear over the final 400m to win with a ton in hand by six and a quarter. TITBITS Pitched in against mainly boys in this only her second outing, TAWNY JET won the opening maiden plate over 1200m much easier than the official winning margin of half a length would suggest.

DREAMER. Easy to back at 17/2 on the off, the daughter of Visionaire raced in midfield during the early part of the race. She quickened well from halfway and comfortably accounted for the wellexposed BLING A DING DING by two. TITBITS Not disgraced in the R1M non-black type KZN Yearling Sale Million last time out, WE LIGHT THE FIRE made all when getting off the mark in the maiden plate over 1000m.

The Path Of Glory Irish Champion Pathfork, who hails from the same family as Saturday’s unbeaten Gr1 William Hill St Leger winner Logician, enjoyed another good weekend, with a trio of winners. Pathfork had double success on Saturday, with his son Viking Trail winning in Mauritius, and daughter Promise winning at Turffontein. One of five winners on the day for trainer Paul Peter, the five-year-old Promise made much of the running to claim victory in a FM 83 handicap by a length, with regally bred Exceed And Excel daughter Queen Supreme a beaten favourite back in third and Met winner River Jetez’s daughter Jetorio back in fourth spot.

Miesque’s great-grandson, and fellow Breeders’ Cup Mile winner, Karakontie (Bernstein), has made a pleasing start with his first twoyear-olds this season, with his early runners including Tyro Stakes winner, Karak. Another from Karakontie’s first crop is high-class Russian performer, Great Winner, who is closely inbred to Miesque. This grandson of Storm Cat could well further enhance Miesque’s magnificent legacy over time, as could Miesque’s 2018 Gr1 French Derby winning grandson, Study Of Man (Deep Impact). Miesque’s A.P. Indy sired son, Judpot, has enjoyed success in South Africa, through the likes of Gr1 winners as Along Came Polly, Coral Fever, Forest Indigo, and Juxtapose, and it is surely only a matter of time before Judpot makes his mark as a broodmare sire. His half-brother, Kingmambo, is currently damsire of more than 140 individual stakes winners. Winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile in both 1987 and 1988, Miesque to this day rates as the most influential female BC Mile winner of all, although 2003 Mile winner, Six Perfections (whose dam is a half-sister to Miesque) is the dam of four black type horses to date, including Australian Gr2 winner, Yucatan (Galileo), French Gr2 winner, Planet Five (Storm Cat), Gr3 winner, Faufiler (Galileo), and Mount Everest (Galileo). The latter ran second to subsequent multiple Gr1 winner, Japan (Galileo), in the 2018 Gr2 Beresford Stakes.

Bred by Willem Engelbrecht JR, Promise has now won four of her last five starts, and has won or placed in 11 of 16 outings. Her Gr1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes winning sire Pathfork also enjoyed success at Hollywoodbets Scottsville the following day, when the stallion’s son Marchingontogether landed a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m impressively. The Pathfork gelding, third in last season’s G1 SA Derby, has now won

four times and has already earned in excess of R500 000. Bred by Jagessar Limited, Marchingontogether was named Champion 3YO Colt/Gelding for 2018-2019 at the recent KZN Racing Awards ceremony. Pathfork, whose previous notable performers include graded stakes winners as Mighty High, Red Chesnut Road and My Friend Lee, is from one of the hottest families in the stud book – with Pathfork being a half-brother to 2019 Gr1 Preakness Stakes winner War Of Will, and from the same family as 2019 Gr1 winners Romanised, Siskin and Almond Eye, as well as red-hot sire Bated Breath.
