The Listed Settlers Trophy has been tweaked by the race programmers. Saturday’s Durbanville feature has been dropped in distance from 2400m to 2000m. Apparently there was some lack of enthusiasm as some trainers were not keen to go so far this early with their decent feature horses.

Snaith’s powerful hand means he can score his third win in five runnings, and his sixth overall. The SP top-rated Platinum Prince carries the flag with the lightly campaigned Belgarion and topweighted senior Elusive Silva as support fire. The handicapper may not yet have the number of the promising Dynasty 4yo Belgarion, who returned after an unplaced effort in the Cape Derby (he choked up, so had excuses), to win over a mile last time. A fitter horse this time, and from the best of the draw with Richard Foure up, he

looks the one to beat. The SP top-rated Platinum Prince gets the blinkers removed and enjoys the benefit of two recent runs under the belt. On his best form he must have an undeniable chance of banking the R93 750 first cheque and thus breaking the win hoodoo – his last success dating back over two years. The 7yo Elusive Silva is clearly the proven class-horse in the race and showed his edge with an eyecatching victory over 1400m last time. The Vodacom Durban July placer, and multiple away stakes winner, could be dangerous at best. American Landing has not won since his away success in the East Cape Derby in May 2018. He has tended to lack interest of late. Gyre seldom runs a bad race and is 1,5kgs better of with Crome Yellow for a 0,75 length beating last time.

He should be thereabouts again. Dharma was something of a surprise winner of the Gr3 Winter Derby last term and only tired late when hanging on well for third at his first start as a 4yo in August. He was beaten 1,50 lengths by Crome Yellow but meets the Nel runner on 2kgs better terms and will strip fitter – and certainly more competitive over the extra 300m. Crome Yellow is in a rich vein of form and goes for a hat-rick of wins. He has gone up in the ratings and will need to be at his best to hold the likes of Gyre - and even American Landing. The grey Herodotus has his first run as a 4yo and his first as a gelding. The son of Trippi, who

Punters Will Beneﬁt Information and transparency is key to raising the image of the sport and maintaining and growing racing’s customer base. The news that the Kenilworth Racing board have taken the decision to implement a compulsory trainer comment requirement for first-timers and horses rested for longer than 120 days is to be welcomed. Following a board meeting held on Friday 20 September, it was agreed to implement a local condition that with effect from the racemeeting at Durbanville on Saturday 5 October 2019, it will be compulsory for all trainers to supply the National Racing Bureau with comments for horses that are running for the first time or are coming off a rest of longer than 120 days. Two Cape trainers randomly canvassed by the Sporting Post said that it was a great initiative and a proactive step in the right direction. “Racing is far too often reacting to criticism and loaded with negativity that tends to grab the headlines. Making pre-race comments a requirement means that we are all on the same page and the punter must never feel it’s a game of insider trading and exclusivity.” The move makes the Cape a leader on the South African horseracing landscape in the quest to encourage transparency and it is hoped that other jurisdictions will follow suit.

Owners To Blame? The NHRA needs to assist trainers with owners who fail to pay. So suggests trainer Leon Eramus Jnr who was recently warned off after it was found he failed to provide a reasonable level of care and treatment to a number of his horses. ERASMUS took over the yard upon the tragic death of his Dad Leon, who had been a trainer for 28 years. Leon died in a car accident in June 2018. Erasmus Jnr writes on the Sporting Post comments platform: “You all say it’s a disgrace, but not one of you stopped and asked why, what happened. Then I would tell you. I started off with no funds or financial backup, and I did everything I could possibly do to keep the horses going. The disgrace is the owners who know they have

Winning Form’s Charles Ndlovu maintained his new season high with a well taken double at Fairview on Friday that included another polished effort to get the talented Meryl home to win the R110 000 Walmer Handicap.

he non black-type feature counts for little on Meryl’s burgeoning CV but the race was a watershed maiden Fairview polytrack victory for the talented Tiger Ridge mare who has gone from strength to strength in three East Cape outings. After her scintillating last gasp victory in the Listed Jockey Club Stakes last time, Meryl was easy to

Relaxed early after a rough early passage in the nine-horse field, she powered home with authority to collect the R68 750 first cheque and beat the free-striding Flying Squadron by a length in a time of 109,39 secs. Seeking Wisdom was a length back in third with Sao Paulo in fourth.

The winner’s stablemate and favourite Ontenderhooks never kicked and finished sixth and 2,35 lengths back. The race rounded off a nice double for Ndlovu who rode Elusive Kat (11-1) to victory for Jacques Strydom in the previous race. In a letter to members, the Western Cape Chapter of the Racing Association (WPRRA) advises that it has a vacant seat on the Board of Trustees of The Thoroughbred Horseracing Trust.

The principal objective of the Trust is to promote the interests of all thoroughbred horse-racing in South Africa with a view to the long-term viability of the sport. It is an ancillary object of the Trust to promote and encourage schemes

and projects which broaden the base of persons who participate and who are involved in the Sport to reflect the diversity of the people of South Africa, and in particular, to promote the participation and involvement of persons from historical disadvantaged backgrounds. The Trustees are appointed to the Trust by the RA and SASCOC. The RA can appoint five trustees, of which one must be nominated by WPRRA. Importantly, the following

Stakes Under Pressure

The move to reduce the stakes burden on Phumelela following ongoing news of financial pressure on the company has started to take effect.

The prize monies of the Cape Classic, Concord Cup and the Cape Merchants have also been reduced. In a letter issued to trainers, Phumelela advise that in consultation with the Racing Association a decision has been taken to reduce the number of races scheduled midweek on both the Highveld and in Kimberley from nine to eight with effect from 1 October 2019. This is said to be part of an initiative to mitigate the imminent re-alignment of stakes that will be announced in due course in terms of the stakes agreement formula.

Midweek low grade 9th races added to the Highveld programmes will be cancelled from 1 October and Kimberley’s current nine-race programmes will be cut to eight races from the same date. Due to the financial pressures, Phumelela state that they will generally not be splitting races in the foreseeable future – and then only in exceptionable circumstances. While the provisional Highveld programme published for the three month period October to December 2019 does not include the minor race stakes at this stage, for the month of October these will be set at current winter stakes levels, whereafter the new minor race stakes levels will be published from November.

regally bred Seventh Gear was an impressive Maiden winner. The Matchem is in its 61st year and much like the Drill Hall Stakes run on the eve of the SA Champions Season, it can be an awkward pipeopener for a couple of the big guns. It was won last year by Rainbow Bridge, and we all know that the big son of Ideal World went on to win the Sun Met and the Champions Cup – as well as chasing Do It Again home in the Vodacom Durban July. Supplementary entries are due by 11h0 on Friday 27 September, with declarations closing by 11h00 on Monday 30 September.

A neck winner over the same course and distance on 16 August, the Roger Charlton-trained 2YO filly spaced her opponents by a flippant 9-lengths second-up to remain undefeated.

Noble Double Millstream Farm’s new resident sire Noble Tune produced two winners over the weekend. The former Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf runner up’s first winner came when his talented daughter Abelie made all to win over 1600m on the Turffontein inside track on Saturday. The Piemonte Stud bred Abelie, her sire’s only runner at Turffontein on the day, has now won or placed in 15 of her 18 races. Much as author Johann Wyss described in his famous novel The Swiss Family Robinson from our school days, there are plenty of lessons about life, love, family and animals to be found in Cape Racing’s own ‘The Racing Family Kotzen’. fter four smashing winners at Durbanville on Saturday, the Woodhill Racing Team look to be set for a sizzling summer season with some still unexposed youngsters in the wings. Morne Winnaar rode three of their winners, with Greg Cheyne booting

home one. Interestingly, there are seven different owners amongst their four winners. We asked Glen Kotzen whether that diverse mix was part of the secret of their success? “In a tough economy, nobody really dictates the customer mix, I suppose. But we are thankful for the support and have been very fortunate. The Hattingh family of Chrigor Stud are our biggest owners. We also enjoy the support of top breeders like Drakenstein and Varsfontein, with their magnificently bred fillies. And we have maintained a really good base of those owners who are willing to put that R30 000 or R40 000 in when we are putting a nice horse together. So, it’s a customer demographic that keeps us competitive. And that underscores our family oriented business philosophy of giving every owner – big or small - the very best racing experience we can.” The Kotzen team is an eclectic cocktail of experience and youthful exuberance. John Buckler manages their KZN yard. It’s the longest running ‘satellite’ yard in the holiday province and a key component in the Woodhill Racing business model. “The polytrack option and varied mix of racing in KZN gives us the perfect opportunity to optimise returns for our owners. Some horses are not competitive and have limited opportunity in the Cape summer season. So they go to KZN where they can earn their way. An vice versa. It works well and we have been there longer than some of the ‘permanent’ local yards,” laughs Glen.

At their Paarl Headquarters, former trainer Des McLachlan oversees a strong team headed by Mazenyo Mathabazihe who is Head Groom and breaks in all the babies. “Mazenyo has attended the grooms school courtesy of the Cape Breeders Club and through them also attended the Monty Roberts exhibition at Mistico which he loved. He often talks about the experience and says that Monty was a magician with horses. Some of it has rubbed off on Mazenyo!” Key stable employees of the likes of Nelson Nxana and Wesley Mynhardt, and Glen’s nephew Daniel Kotzen, also play a key role. Glen points out that Nelson Nxana dates all the way back to his days at Ralph Rixon. “Nelson is a great horseman. He left the game and went to work in the security industry. I managed to get him back as one cannot buy that kind of dedication and experience. Wesley Mynhardt and Daniel Kotzen are super riders. When we talk like this I just realise how many people we employ and what an operation of this size takes to run!” he smiles Asked about Saturday’s hat-trick hero Morne Winnaar’s red hot strike-rate for them, Glen says that the talented rider is a good example of confidence at work. “Take Warren Kennedy as a current example. He was getting three or four rides a meeting. Until Gavin van Zyl showed faith in him. Look at Warren today. Morne, who travels through to us three times a week, is a balanced and talented rider. Some owners may not see him as their jockey of choice but we have tried hard to place our trust in him and back and reward him - and he has delivered, as he did on Saturday. Everybody deserves a chance.” Grant Behr has also joined the Woodhill team and he will be riding work and race-riding. “Grant is an experienced rider and he lives down the road. We need

people who can provide intelligent feedback.” Glen explains that he was feeling particularly pleased after his yard’s streak of hot form and had put that typical early season ‘panic’ behind him. “One sits at the beginning of most seasons and look at what you have at your disposal and where you could be competitive. Most trainers do it. One tends to quietly panic- it’s human nature,” he laughed as he commended the vastly experienced Des McLachlan for the outstanding job he had done through the winter. “It’s a tough unglamorous job. The weather. The dark mornings. But most of all it takes patience and going through the preparatory processes with a calm head. You can’t rush a racehorse – he will always make you wait,” says the man who was born into the sport of kings and whose jockey father named him after a horse. Glen tells how time has flown and it has been nineteen years next month since the family made the beautiful Woodhill Estate their home. He recalls that Paul and Avril Gadsby gave him his first job, where he ran a spelling farm for close on two years. “Then I worked for Trevor Lange and went off to do my two year’s national service in the army. After that I worked for Ralph Rixon for seven years and then spent two years with Clodagh Shaw - after which I took the plunge and went on my own. I must say that I have never looked back and have been fortunate to have been able to enjoy the home and work environment that this beautiful farm provides us.” Despite his rugged boyish looks, Glen is 53 already and his mainstay and pillar of strength Kathi ‘is in the same vicinity’. Their three offspring are all grown up with 25 year old Kuyan the only one opting to follow in his Dad’s footsteps. He is a stable employee, a real people’s person and is quickly learning the ropes. He also handles the marketing and social media for the yard. Daughter Kirra is 22 and in her third year of

studies. She is focussing on marketing this year. Their 21 year old son Liam is doing a yachting course and intends finding a job on the marine side. Glen reflects on the great advantages of the farm. “In the early years I was never there. The advantage here is that I have my family with me and my pets – sixteen dogs - all the time. The advantage of having your own establishment is that you have no restrictions as to how many horses you need to work, or the time involved. Every cent spent on the tracks and facilities is also an investment,” he says proudly. Reflecting on the future, Glen is excited about some lovely unraced 3yo’s – and points out that he is not thinking of retiring at this stage – ‘most of us will be working forever. I’m lucky I love what I do. So it helps!” he grins broadly. On racing’s present troubling issues and the stakes cuts, he is cautiously guarded. “Racing is all most of us know. So we have to remain united and positive. It’s obviously not good news about the stakes as that cuts to the heart and core of every stakeholder and must have a ripple effect down the food chain. But tough calls and pain may be necessary now to right the ship - and we have to trust in the judgement of those invested with the task of turning things around. As long as there is communication and transparency, we are happy.”

Named, Trained, Ready To Run!

Naming them is one of the fun parts of buying racehorses. I’m not saying that this is the only fun to be had, but at the very least, it’s something that the entire family can get behind.

ormandy Stud’s Oscar Foulkes writes that for this reason they stopped naming their yearlings prior to sales. However, Ready to Run introduces a new angle – in order for a horse to truly be ‘ready to run’ it has to have a passport. Of course, we don’t just take our own produce to RTR, there are also the yearlings we’ve picked up at a variety of auctions. Leading this group are four that we bought from Maine Chance, where a specific naming policy is in place. All their horses are named before sale (even weanlings), and the first letter has to match the dam’s name. Thanks to this, we have Nicaragua (from a very strong ‘N’ family), Peaceable, Al Diablo and Marcchinetta. The latter had me confused when we bought him as a weanling, until I discovered that the ‘r’ had crept in somewhere in the naming process. He is supposed to be Macchinetta, continuing the coffee theme of his dam Mocha Java (with the ‘chi’ spelling in Italian pronounced as a ‘k’). Having purchased a smashing Master of My Fate colt at the National Sale, I got a second dose of excitement when I noticed that he was named

Tarantino. I immediately put this onto my family WhatsApp group, to which I got all the right emojis in reponse, including a plea that we keep him. Well, kids, paying your university fees involves hopefully turning a profit on selling this chap on RTR, so I’m sorry, but no. From Moutonshoek, we bought Blingking (out of Blingsta) and Mit Eish (out of Ice Link, geddit?), in trademark humour from these great people. I hope the breeders of the unnamed horses we bought will think we’ve done justice with the names that have been dreamt up. Shadwell give their horses Arabic names, so I trust they’ll forgive Cold Snap for the smashing What A Winter colt we bought from them. A scopey Querari colt out of Fairy Tern was anointed Tara Iti, which is the Maori name for a fairy tern. I’ve had a lot of fun naming Twice Overs, and I’m rather pleased with Stereotype for the colt out of Typical. Naming our own produce means exploring similar themes on a regular basis. Top of this list – and winning no prizes for originality – are the foals of the three full-sisters Arctic Breeze, Nordic Wind and Nordic Breeze (all by Windrush out of Nordic Vine). Please don’t judge, three different people were involved

in the naming of these mares. On an individual basis, it’s not that bad, but when you put them all together, oi vey! We had to withdraw the Arctic Breeze filly (Icy Gust) as a result of a fractured pedal bone. For the Judpot filly out of Nordic Wind, I found Tuuletar, which is a Finnish goddess of the wind. I assume that is pronounced ‘tool-e-tar’. I suspect we have now exhausted all avenues with any reference remotely connected to wind in Nordic territories. Stand by for Horse One and Horse Two (with apologies to Dr Seuss). Our mare, Janis, was also withdrawn from RTR several years ago, after she had an injury during preparation, and was then covered as a two-year-old rather than wait for her to recover sufficiently to be put back into training. She was named after Janis Joplin (her dam is Diva), so her Querari colt is named Full Tilt Boogie, which was the name of Janis’ band. Ocelot is a nice feline reference for the mare Dance With Tigers. It will be very useful if her three-yearold, Tango With Tigers, cracks his maiden before this filly is offered for sale. I’ve named a few foals out of Happy Jean, including one of my favourites, Crowd Pleaser. Happy Chappy is a particularly smart Querari colt, and we’re hoping he will be a … um … crowd pleaser. I’ve explored Argonaut-related references for Lady of the Fleece a couple of times. Her RTR filly last year was named

Here’s Stereotype when bought at the Klawervlei Farm Sale. He’s not exactly a 'carbon copy' of Twice Over, but there’s a lot of Northern Dancer about him. Fleeced (yes, bit of a cop-out), and then she proceeded to injure herself badly before the sale, resulting in an open wound a good 10cm x 15cm (i.e. fleecing herself, which shows just how prophetic names can be), necessitating her withdrawal from the sale. from the front, she rattled off a couple of big margin victories in a row before doing her tendon. Her filly, Sabrina Fairchild, is possibly the best Querari filly we’ve bred, and a chip off the old block in name as well. I close with two horses that we bought already named. I would be delighted if Mosalah has just a fraction of the talent of his namesake, Mo Salah. And, the best post-purchase name discovery of the lot – bearing the RTR sale in mind – is the lovely Gimmethegreenlight filly Ready to Rania. Are you ready?

Karis’ Flying Five A fabulous five-timer at Sha Tin on Saturday couldn’t dissuade Karis Teetan from his firm view that he has a fight on his hands to match Hong Kong career-high success of last season. “THIS IS THE strongest bunch of jockeys since I’ve been here,” the Mauritian ace said at the end of a day in which he also guided King Opie to a welcome feature win in the Class 2 Pok Oi Centenary Cup Handicap over 1600m. Teetan soared to 84 wins and thirdplace in the premiership last term. He headed into Saturday’s card with what he reckoned were “ok rides” and stuck among a raft of riders with two wins on the board, all looking up at the high-flying Zac Purton and Joao Moreira. “Things are tough but I’m out there and I’m trying and hopefully I’ll keep getting the support,” he said, aware that the ranks, already bolstered with the talents of Blake Shinn and Lyle Hewiston will, come November, also feature the returning Silvestre de Sousa and Alexis Badel. “The support I had last season was really good,” Teetan continued. “This season is very tough. I’m getting rides but not as much quality. I still have a few stables supporting and I’m trying to work hard in

the morning but there are a lot of good jockeys around, light jockeys, so things are not easy this season.” For all of that, Teetan left the track in a more familiar and buoyant position: equalsecond in the standings thanks to only his second Hong Kong five-timer, which took his tally to seven, three more than at the same point a year ago and sitting upsides Moreira, right on the heels of Purton. He did so after lighting up an otherwise low-key card. Teetan had one win on the board at mid-point but completely dominated the back-end, winning the last four races. The Frankie Lor-trained King Opie’s Cup success followed an earlier Class 4 score on the Tony Millard-trained Fun Times and preceded the Francis Lui-trained More Than This’s Class 3 victory, Winner Supreme’s impressive dirt track score, and King Of Hearts’ driving triumph in the finale. “I thought I had chances but there were a few horses that were competitive in those races so I couldn’t be too sure,” he said.

Hong Kong - Quality Not Politics The Issue Turnover was down at Sha Tin on Saturday but the civil unrest that has plagued Hong Kong racing in recent days was not to blame, according to Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges.

Poet’s Voice’s 16 black type winners were headed by multiple Gr1 winner, and now sire, Poet’s Word, and Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes victor, Trap For Fools. Poet’s Voice also enjoyed success in Italy, where his representatives included Derby winner, Summer Festival, Oaks winner, Sand Zabeel and Premio Parioli (Italian 2000 Guineas) winner, Poeta Diletto.
