Mike de Kock’s 2018 Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge (F&M) winner Cascapedia is back to defend her title when she runs in the 2019 renewal on Saturday.

Gr3 MATCHEM STAKES at Durbanville this Saturday
T
The 2018 R200 000 Gr3 Matchem Stakes was the season launching pad to great things for the top-class subsequent Sun Met winner Rainbow Bridge. The 2019 renewal presents another fascinating mix of the generations with Dean Kannemeyer’s exciting 3yo African Warrior taking on his elders.
he SP top-rated Undercover Agent returns from a break of 17 weeks following an unplaced effort in the Gold Challenge, when showing his customary bold galloping style and fading late to 2,55 lengths off Do It Again. He was carded for stud duties at Klawervlei, but the decision to keep him in training for another season suggests that he should not be underestimated and he runs well fresh. Dean Kannemeyer has conceded that he is not quite sure of the correct distance for his Gr2 Umkhomazi Stakes
winning 3yo African Warrior and he starts the son of Vercingetorix on Saturday – unfortunately from the widest draw of 11. “He is a smart youngster. His Scottsville Gr1 form, where he may have gone too early, is an indicator of his class. He has a hell of a turn of foot. It makes sense to start him in the Matchem with his high rating,” said Kannemeyer, who has one of his best classic attacks in years. Vaughan Marshall’s top-rate 4yo One World returns from a 19 week break following a convincing defeat
by his arch-rival Vardy in the Winter Classic. He beat Equus Champion Sprinter Kasimir over Saturday’s course-and-distance at this meeting last year, and must rank a massive danger, running fresh over a distance he enjoys. The 7yo Search Party, stablemate to Undercover Agent, has not been at his best recently and comes in off an unplaced run in the Gr1 Mercury Sprint at Hollywoodbets Greyville last season. Snaith’s Star Chestnut is an interesting runner. He was beaten over 5 lengths in the 2018 Matchem by Rainbow Bridge but has a place chance here. He was in need of his last run when beaten a half length by Ready Steady Go. His best recent form is at Fairview, but with Fourie in the irons, he cannot be discarded. Listed Sophomore winner Pleasedtomeetyou failed to fulfil the expectations last season but comes in off a ten week break and has a place chance at best. It looks tough for the balance of them and if at 80% readiness, Undercover Agent should have them on the backfoot from the break. African Warrior is the danger and can stamp his Guineas claims.
The Cape Summer Of Champions starting point has become a bit blurred over the years. Saturday is definitely the launchpad of the summer feature action but last year the season branding was focussed only on the Gr1 action of December and January. Whatever the calendar dynamics, the Matchem and Diana Stakes are two well-established local contests. The Matchem is named after the famous thoroughbred foundation stallion, Matchem (1748 – 21 February 1781). Matchem is a direct male tail line descendent of the Godolphin Arabian (or Godolphin Barb as he is also known) and along with Eclipse and Herod is considered one of the three 18th century stallions that produced the Thoroughbred sire-lines of modern times. Traditionally run at Kenilworth, it was switched to Durbanville in 2010. The earliest record of the Matchem Stakes dates back to 1958. It was then open to 2 and 3yo’s and run in mid-April over 1400m at Kenilworth for a stake of £1,250. The idea of running juveniles against 3yo’s over that distance in April, at what was more or less weight for age terms, came in for a lot of criticism, with many feeling it was too much to ask of the youngsters.

Now this is more like it! Starved of highquality local racing for three months, Cape racing fans will be excited at the class line-up for Saturday’s R200 000 Gr3 Diana Stakes.
he presence of the smart Cape Fillies Guineas winner Front And Centre, who jumps from the pole position draw, adds an interesting dimension to a tricky race, where local star Helen’s Ideal is the SP top-rated. Both ladies come off 14 week breaks from last term and are likely to need it – they are also drawn alongside each other. While thought by many to likely stay the 2200m, the big-hearted Helen’s Ideal failed to go the distance in the Winter Oaks and blotted her copybook with a rare non earning run. Back to a more suitable trip, she looks a big runner. Brett Crawford’s Front And Centre had little luck in the SA Champions Season but should be a different kettle of fish back on home turf. A course-and-distance winner, she was unplaced in the Garden Province in her last start as a 3yo. Poinsettia winner Freedom Charter found the pace a bit hot too handle in the
SA Fillies Sprint. She has her first run this season. Dean Kannemeyer’s Sugar Girl flew up late to be beaten 1,40 lengths in the Poinsettia and then rounded off her KZN campaign with a good second to Whiskey Road at Greyville. The stakes winner Lesedi La Rona is one of the few with a run under the belt and Candice Bass-Robinson used the same strategy to her advantage when winning the Sophomore Sprint recently. At her best, Lesedi La Rona could assert her class. The Snaith-Fourie duo team up with Dynamic Diana, who was well beaten behind Love To Boogie in this race last year. On the face of it, her recent form is not quite good enough to suggest she could take on the big guns. Front And Centre could show her class at the expense of Sugar Girl and Helen’s Ideal.

Richard Fourie and Justin Snaith made it a double in Saturday’s R150 000 Listed Settlers Trophy at Durbanville when the lightly exposed 4yo Belgarion finished with a flourish to follow up on stablemate Magnificent Seven’s classy victory in 2018.

And the good son of Dynasty – now a winner from 1200m to 2000m – signalled his Cape Summer Season prospects to give Justin his third win in five runnings, and his sixth overall, in the early season feature. The pace was muddling early on, with Belgarion staying within three lengths of the leader as the brimful of confidence Morne Winnaar eventually taking the grey Herodotus out to step up the pace ahead of American Landing and Crome Yellow. Winnaar and Woodhill Racing kingpin Glen Kotzen can do little wrong at the moment and at the 250m an upset looked on the cards as Belgarion took his time to find his stride down the inside as Herodotus galloped fresh off his rest out front. But Fourie had again timed it perfectly and Belgarion (9-10) went past the leader with authority to post a half length victory in a time
of 121,91 secs, with Herodotus (18-1) staying on for second. Crome Yellow (6-1) finished with a rattle to run third, ahead of the not-quite-there-yet American Landing in fourth. The winner is owned by staunch Cape racing supporters, Alec and the Honourable Gillian Foster and bred by Alec Foster. He is a son of the now deceased perennial class producer Dynasty (Fort Wood) out of the lightly raced German two-time winner Riva (Acatenango) – a half sister to French Gr3 winner Oxava. A winner of 4 of his 6 starts with 1 place, Belgarion has banked R193 750. He choked up in the Cape Derby and was placed in the Politician Stakes behind the smashing Twist Of Fate earlier this year and looks a horse worth following and remains undefeated as a 4yo. His target is the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap to be run at Kenilworth on 11 January. That means the real Belgarion fireworks could reach fruition in the 2020 SA Champions Season. The Snaith-Fourie combination won three races on the day.
What A Beauty!
H
Beauty Generation caned his rivals on his return to action in the Gr3 Celebration Cup Handicap at Sha Tin on Tuesday.
ong Kong’s star galloper displayed imperious form at his first start of the season. The brilliant bay brushed off the burden of 133lb, as well as large weight concessions to all his rivals, and surged to victory in a track record 1m 20.05s. “He’s just an amazing horse. To do what he does defies logic to a certain degree,” jockey Zac Purton said. “We only just started to see the best of him at the end of last season so I believe he’s still got plenty ahead of him now.” Beauty Generation now holds Sha
Tin track records at three distances, with today’s 1400m mark standing alongside his jaw-dropping mile time and, remarkably, an all-time best over 2200m. “That’s the first part of the mission accomplished!” trainer John Moore said. “With the tail-wind in the straight today I thought he’d have to break a track record to give so much weight away to the others and he did. “Zac said he felt it in the last 50 m but that’s to be expected when you’re carrying 133 pounds and giving away so much weight.”
Gavin Smith’s Big Four Hollywoodbets sponsored trainer Gavin Smith enjoyed a terrific four-timer at Fairview on Friday, including a gutsy win for the Ralphs Racing Team in the Fairview 1800m with evergreen 6yo Dawnbreaker.
O
n an afternoon dominated by the Smith and Yvette Bremner yards, Gavin Smith had Dawnbreaker cherry ripe for a big effort in the R110 000 non black-type feature. Replacement rider, Ridgemont – Highlands sponsored Greg Cheyne rode an intelligent race as he settled the relaxed Dawnbreaker a length off the free-running Shogun. Dawnbreaker is effective over the 1200m and 1400m, but Smith showed his years of experience, testing the waters and sending him over 1800m in a small field, where pace was always likely to be lacking. The move paid dividends, even though the favourite Toltec looked very dangerous
late and Dawnbreaker frankly appeared beaten in the run for home. Cheyne pointed out that Dawnbreaker (12-1) had not changed legs in the dash for home, but enjoyed the challengers and threats around him and he rallied well to hold the odds-on Toltec to a short head in a time of 109,77 secs. Shogun was there for a long way and was not disgraced a head away in third. Bred by Highlands, Dawnbreaker is a son of champion Trippi (End Sweep) out of the National Assembly mare, Enchanted Dawn. He has been a model of consistency, winning 7 of his 30 starts for 15 places in the mix and stakes of R565 800.

Mfanelo Zuma
S
Big names following in famous family footsteps have long been a power passport to a successful career in the saddle. Lerena, Ferraris, Puller and Lloyd are just some of the proven dynasties that run deep in South African racing.
o when a young member of the Zuma clan from the little known reaches of Impendle, with a family of 23 siblings and literally zero exposure to the sport of kings, packs his bags and takes his chances in the big wide world of racing, one has to express a measure of admiration. For those not familiar with the location, Impendle is a town in the Umgungundlovu District and is just under 50 km west of Pietermaritzburg – the Capital City of KwaZuluNatal. One of its most progressive former residents is the 21 year old Mfanelo Zuma, a second year SA Jockey Academy student, who enjoyed the thrill of his first ride at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on 15 September. Nobody will remember that the Gavin van Zyl - trained La Bahia finished over ten lengths back in the modest Maiden Plate – except for the young Mr Zuma. He introduces himself and tells us his mates call him ‘Fa’ – remember it’s a silent ‘M’ in his first name – before going on to speak with tangible pride about that first ride. “I won’t say I wasn’t a touch nervous and hyped up as raceday approached. But when the gates were sprung that all disappeared. The adrenalin was pumping and I kept thinking about everything I had been taught. It was 70 odd seconds that felt like nothing I have ever experienced. I can’t wait for my next ride!” The Stipes reported that the not so easy to handle La Bahia, who was ponied to the start – something of a baptism of fire on Zuma’s first day at the office - lost 1 length. But the important part for the young rider was the stipes’ last comment – ‘ Apprentice M Zuma the rider of La Bahia had a satisfactory qualifying ride’. So that’s the first of five baby steps on the long ladder to fame and fortune. But with Hollywoodbets Scottsville’s spring treatment under way, Mfanelo will have to wait until Sunday 8 December, when racing returns to the KZN Capital City track. “We are only allowed qualified rides down the straight track. That’s not an option at Hollywoodbets Greyville obviously, so I will have to be patient and hope, at the same time, that Mr Moore at the Johannesburg Academy can possibly get me a ride in a suitable apprentice race.” At the age of 21, and with his high schooling at Imbali Junior Secondary School behind him, Mfanelo fits into the same profile as a recent subject on these pages – Cole Dicken.
It is clear that maturity and the ability to focus on their jockey training gives the older guys an edge on their wide-eyed academy mates, who arrive unsure about where they are headed in life and still distracted by history and geography. SAJA Marketing Manager Leonard Strong makes an interesting observation – the Academy’s target market in terms of the physical attributes minimum specs fits less than 1% of the population. So how did the young man with the famous surname from the far-flung Impendle land up at Shongweni? “I used to ride our neighbour’s horses when growing up and that, coupled with the fact that I have never weighed a lot – right now I stand in my boots at 44kgs – had plenty of people suggesting I should be a jockey.” Mfanelo was at a loose end when finishing his schooling and a search of the internet led to his eldest
brother, who owns a construction company, contacting the SA Jockey Academy. Leonard Strong recalls hosting Mfanelo and his brother at Greyville during a racemeeting and showing them around. “I can’t see anybody new to racing not being taken with the vibe and pulse at a racemeeting – and it wasn’t long before Mfanelo’s bags were packed and he was on his way to us to start a whole new life.” Mfanelo picks up the story from here and tells how being the second youngest in a family of 23 has many advantages in preparing one to cope with life. His family at home is bigger than the academy, so he has slotted in with ease! “You learn to stand in a queue – to not expect anything being dished out to you - and especially not to be selfish. I adapted quickly and have really enjoyed my time here. I’m very thankful for the opportunity.” And his energetic work ethic has already been in evidence at the training tracks where he runs from ring to ring. “He is tiny but is as tough as nails. He is half the size of some of the guys and I have seen him tackle them off the pitch on the soccer field too. He has no fear and is a hardworking youngster – he is always smiling. A real example – and I like him as he takes feedback as well as criticism constructively. In this game, sulking can be destructive – and he definitely doesn’t sulk!”
said the veteran former champion jockey Garth Puller, who has taken many apprentices under his wing. Garth says that he has suggested to Mfanelo that he works on his upper body and legs strength as he needs to ‘bulk up a bit’. “He is the kind of guy that horses run for. Pencil his name in – he will be more than okay when he learns the ropes of pace and race-riding. That just comes with experience.” Leonard Strong endorses what Puller says. “Mfanelo reminds me a little of Callan Murray. Always a smile. Always willing to work. The trainers pick up the enthusiasm and it’s important to create the opportunities as the youngsters can only build their careers and reputations on the racetrack with opportunities provided by trainers and owners,” adds Strong. Mfanelo, who is doing his post-matric this year, singles Warren Kennedy out as his role model amongst the senior jockeys. “He takes the time to give advice and guidance. He doesn’t need to bother. But he is a good person. And I admire the way he rides,” says the 21 year old. And on the inevitable off-the-track question of whether he is related to a former State President of South Africa, Mfanelo smiles broadly. “My Dad tells me that us Zuma’s are all related. But I have never met the big man. I just want to get on with making my family proud and riding winners - and hopefully becoming a champion one day!”
Well Respected Mfanelo Zuma is almost too small, as Garth Puller points out. To be considered for jockey training, you need to be between the ages of 15 to 20 years old, not taller than 160cm and weigh between 38 – 47kgs. The internationally respected South African Jockey Academy is the only institution in South Africa that offers an academic and practical apprentice programme to qualify as a professional jockey. Established in 1958 the South African Jockey Academy has grown from strength to strength in producing leading jockeys, many of whom have gone on to receive top honours internationally. The academy has satellite campuses in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. There is also an academy based in Gauteng that is funded and administered by The Racing Trust. Apprentices begin their initial training at Summerveld and are fed through to the other three training centres once they competent at riding in races. Visit www.saja.co.za

Eric The Brave Only brave jockeys venture into Mauritian waters! But new arrival Eric Ngwane made a dream start for his new stable at the Champ de Mars on Saturday when booting home a winner at only his second ride. On the SA racing and breeding sponsored day, the 26 yo Ngwane, a graduate of the SA Jockey Academy, showed composure and balance when getting former Dean Kannemeyer charge Carlton Heights up to beat Manoel Nunes on All Aboard and win the BSA Souvenir Trophy.
Whoops Former Tasmanian apprentice Alex Patis endured a tough start to her Queensland racing career when she was hit with a one-month suspension after costing herself and her mount Just Favulous victory by misjudging the winning post. Patis was having her first ride at Toowoomba on Saturday aboard Just Favulous in the opening event when charged by stewards under AR 131 (b) with failing to ride her mount out to the line. The 19 yo later explained that she believed she had just won the race when she misjudged the winning post, allowing favourite Archer’s Treasure to get up.

Somebody’s listening! TAB has bowed to customer demand and reintroduced Rolling Doubles on all South African racemeetings with effect from Monday’s Fairview racemeeting. The bet was discontinued last month in favour of a single R6 unit Daily Double on SA and many international race meetings.
Double Quick Apprentice Thabiso Gumede doubled his tally of winners in the space of a few days last week. On Heritage Day Tuesday he broke the ice on Sarah for trainer Paul Peter for his first career winner. And then added Mokoko to his tally, as he kept Paul Lafferty’s gelding going the very next day at Hollywoodbets Greyville. A flying start after a modest beginning.

Muzi Leads Boks
A
Winning Form-sponsored Muzi Yeni will lead the South African team at this year’s World Sports Betting International Jockey Challenge supported by Sun International and Air Mauritius, at Turffontein on Saturday 16 November.
t the official launch of this year’s event at Turffontein last Wednesday, Larry Wainstein, CEO of the Racing Association, said the event will return to South Africa after having been staged in Singapore last year. “They promised we could have it back this year and we’re delighted to host it again.” The South African team is made up of the top four finishers on last season’s log, and two wild cards. Unfortunately, Lyle Hewitson is unavailable as he is contracted to ride in Hong Kong, Richard Fourie declined the invitation due to other commitments, and Anton Marcus, although very eager to represent his country, could only confirm his participation closer to the event. The four who do qualify for the International Jockeys’ Challenge are Yeni, Gavin Lerena, Greg Cheyne and Warren Kennedy. The wild cards have been given to Callan Murray and S’manga Khumalo. Five of the six members of the international team were announced, and they are Rab Havlin (Scotland), Paul Hanagan, Martin Dwyer and Hayley Turner from England and Italy’s Andrea Atzeni. The final team member will be announced in due course. Commenting on their involvement, Ryno du Plessis, National Marketing
Manager for World Sports Betting, said that while many people came to watch the international jockeys, he is “excited to see our local guys in action”. “Our jockeys are world class and it’s an opportunity to give them a platform to show their talents.” Rob Dalton, Gaming Relationship Manager at Sun International, said they are the “lifestyle partners” of the event and will be the providers of accommodation for the jockeys, which includes a stay at Sun City. “If somebody is a professional, they want a good room, a good breakfast and that leaves them to focus on the job they need to do,” said Dalton. Wainstein also thanked Air Mauritius. “They have been our flying partner for the past four or five years and they have come on board again this year.” Jockeys will be drawn for these races at an event held after final declarations. They will also race in their country’s team colours and not the owners’ colours. Another great event to be hosted on the day is the Monaco Million Maiden Sprint, which is sponsored by Prince Albert of Monaco together with a few business associates. The race, run over 1160m, will carry prize money of R1-million, half of which will be paid out to the connections of the winning horse.

Enable’s Arc Bid On Sunday
A
John Gosden expects Enable to be pushed all the way by what he describes as ‘mighty opponents’ when bidding for a recordbreaking third Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp on Sunday.
ssessing the rivals that could stand in the way of the daughter of Nathaniel writing herself into the history books on October 6, the Newmarket handler feels there are plenty of live dangers that could deny her victory. Though Enable is a general 1011 chance to complete a hat-trick of victories in the prestigious mileand-a-half prize, Gosden believes her price is short enough given the calibre of opposition. Gosden – who is seeking a fourth win in the race – said: “This shaping up to be a proper Arc, which is what you want. She is a slightly silly price and that doesn’t reflect the quality of the opposition.
“Certainly Japan I’ve mentioned as a danger. I thought he was impressive the way he quickened in the Juddmonte International. The Prix du Jockey Club winner Sottsass, who I thought put in the best threeyear-old performance of the year with the way he quickened. They are mighty opponents those three-yearold colts, getting weight. “Then of course we see a horse (Ghaiyyath) run over a trip in Germany that he has been asking to run over for some time and absolutely destroyed the field.A horse like him and Waldgeist, who we should not underestimate, and the three-year-olds set a very high standard.” Having warmed up for her trip to
France with a second victory in the Yorkshire Oaks at York last month, Gosden feels he has Enable in the right place mentally. Gosden said: “She is doing nice, normal canters and is very content in herself. I think we have her mentally where we would like to have her. Come next week we will build her up to the Arc. “I didn’t want to drop back in trip at York for the Juddmonte. It was not a case of running away from one horse. She won over a mile and a quarter at Sandown, but that is a different to the flat, slick, fast track at York. “She set her own fractions over the mile and a half at York. They came and joined her and she said, ‘OK, you want to race’, and off she went. She has been a pleasure to train from the early days and you are very lucky when you get a filly of that quality in the place.” www.racingtv.com

Eagle Eye On The Cup
T
Leading South African owner Braam van Huyssteen will be at Flemington Racecourse on 5 November where he hopes to lead in the winner of the A$7,3m Lexus Melbourne Cup.
he charismatic George-based Van Huyssteen, whose dayglo yellow and purple silks have been a dominant feature on our tracks since his 50-1 Grey Cossack won the 2011 Gold Vase in the care of Carl Burger, could enjoy the extremely rare privilege of two runners in Australian racing’s holy grail – a race that literally stops the nation on the first Tuesday of every November. Braam’s previous highlight, in a decade of racing horses, came at Kenilworth in January 2018 when dual SA Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle, a horse that he had acquired only weeks earlier, won the prestigious Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate for the third consecutive year. But the entrepeneur’s sights have now moved to the global stage and Melbourne on 5 November – a date on our calendar usually associated with fireworks. Together with his longstanding partnerowner, the Brisbane-based William Henderson, Braam will fancy the chances of Europe’s richest flat handicap race winner, Mustajeer, who is set 55kgs, being a big runner. They also have Raheen House in the weights. He will carry 53kgs, but could possibly miss the cut. While Ger Lyons trained Mustajeer to win the Ebor at York in August, trainer Kris Lees will take over the son of Medicean’s preparation in advance of the Caulfield Cup. Lyons knows Mustajeer well, but he was not too helpful in suggesting whether Mustajeer had a shout in the 3200m scrap.
T
T Braam van Huyssteen Playfully labelling the race ‘the most expensive bumper in the world’, he said that ‘braver and bigger men than him have tried and failed. “And better horses than this guy have tried and failed,” he added. Damien Oliver will ride Mustajeer in the Caulfield Cup. Newmarket trainer William Haggas plans to give the gelded Sea The Stars’ son Raheen House a shot at the Caulfield Cup on 19 October. The five year-old, one of just two horses to have beaten dual Arc winner Enable, finished down the field on his last start in the Ebor at York – but he had previously been placed in both Listed and Group race company on the Knavesmire. Champion Sydney jockey Brenton ‘The Gun’ Avdulla has been locked in to partner Raheen House in both races. · First published in SP Digest on 26 September
A total of 45 entries, including the 2018 winner Tilbury Fort, were received last week for the R2 million Gr1 Gauteng Summer Cup which will bring the curtain down on the 2019 Highveld Spring Season when the 2000m feature is run at Turffontein on Saturday 30 November.
he inaugural Summer Cup was run in 1887 as the Johannesburg Handicap. The race was won by outsider Haco, a five-year-old trained by Mr Du Plessis and ridden by J Bundy. Second, the 13-8 favourite, finished fourth. Many famous horses have won down the years and they include Pamphlet (1917), Lenin (1940), Cuff Link (1963), Caradoc (1966) and Home Guard (1970). One horse who really grabbed the public’s attention was Java, trained by Jack Butler. He pulled off a remarkable Summer Cup hat-trick from 1956 as a four-year-old before going on to claim the honours again the following two years. Elevation was to repeat those exploits almost 20 years later. Trained by George Azzie, the chestnut landed his first victory in 1972, when the race was run as the Holiday Inns for the first time. He went on to score again in 1973 before completing a fantastic hat-trick under a big weight in 1974. After Cape challenger King’s Guard’s victory in 1971, the name of the race was changed to accommodate a sponsor. As the years rolled by further changes to the name,
The Merits Of A Blunder!
conditions and date diminished the event’s glitter and it eventually became the Champion Stakes, run in April. In 1999 Phumelela reintroduced the Summer Cup to the racing calendar in its traditional format and the event is now firmly established as one of the “Big 4” on the country’s racing calendar. Trainer Mike de Kock has won the race a record nine times with six of those victories coming since the race’s reintroduction. One of the interesting 2019 entrants is Mike de Kock’s champion 3yo of last term Hawwaam, who has not been seen since a late withdrawal from the Vodacom Durban July. Being a handicap, it is not known whether De Kock will rather aim him at the Cape summer features like the Sun Met. Sean Tarry goes for a hat-trick of Summer Cup successes and has 11 entries. His colleague Geoff Woodruff was the Summer Cup King, winning it four consecutive years from 2013 to 2016. The Guv has four entries. Hollywoodbets are running an ante-post book - link to them and find the entries via www.sportingpost.co.za

The South African racing and breeding industry had reason to celebrate on Tuesday when the Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred Ezra saluted at Sha Tin racecourse for trainer Tony Millard, jockey Aldo Domeyer and owner William Mocatta.
ent off the 27-10 favourite, fouryear-old Ezra picked up his first Hong Kong win when he captured the Nanning Handicap over 1400m in emphatic style. The gelding romped home to score by three and a quarter lengths, while drawing comfortably in the final furlong. Second twice previously in his brief Hong Kong stint, Ezra looks set for more Hong Kong success judging by the ease of his win on Tuesday. What made Tuesday’s win all the more satisfying is that not only is Ezra bred in South
Africa, but both his trainer and jockey hail from this country as well. A R2 200 000 buy from the 2017 National Yearling Sale, Ezra is a son of the Avontuur based triple Gr1 winner Oratorio and the topclass race mare Emerald Beauty. The latter, a daughter of Equalize and from the same family as champions Elusive Fort and Empress Club, won three times in South Africa and the UAE, with Emerald Beauty’s wins including a triumph in the 2003 Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas where she accounted for subsequent Horse Of The Year, and multiple Gr1 winner, Ilha Da Vitoria.

The 1972 Epsom Derby winner Roberto proved an excellent sire, broodmare sire and sire of sires, with his numerous top class stallion sons including Dynaformer, Kris S, Red Ransom, Silver Hawk, Brian’s Time, Lear Fan and South African champion, Al Mufti.
hile the Roberto male line has thinned out dramatically over the past ten years or so, he remains a factor in a number of countries, through both male line and granddaughter
descendants broodmares. Dynaformer’s son, Temple City, has enjoyed Gr1 success as a sire in North America (another son of Dynasty, Point Of Entry, is sire of 2019 UAE Derby winner, Plus Que Parfait), while Red Ransom has a number of stallion sons in Australia, notably such Gr1 producers as Charge Forward, Duporth, and Domesday. Silver Hawk remains a factor, primarily as a broodmare sire, today – his maternal grandson, Nathaniel, is an increasingly successful sire, whose progeny include the great champion, Enable, while Al Mufti’s South African legacy lives on through his champion sire son, Captain Al, and the latter’s growing number of sire sons at stud.
Kris S One of Roberto’s very best sire sons, without question, was the lightly raced Kris S, a winner of three of only five starts, including the nongraded Bradbury Stakes. Kris S, whose descendants enjoyed particular success in the Breeders Cup, left behind 839 registered foals, of which 88 were stakes winners. Kris S’ black type winners included five individual Breeders’ Cup winners, Epsom Derby winner, Kris Kin, dual Japanese Horse Of The Year, Symboli Kris S and outstanding producer, Vertigineux - whose Horse Of The Year daughter, Zenyatta, ran second to Blame in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Kris S is represented in South Africa by the Drakenstein Stud based Philanthropist. One of Kris S’ very best performers
was the now deceased Gr1 Super Derby winner, Arch, and the latter continues to build on his successful stud career – more than three years after he died. While not as consistently successful as his outstanding sire, Kris S, Arch was a very good sire in his own right, with the former Claiborne Farm resident’s number of stakes winners currently standing at 71 (from 916 runners). His 12 Gr1 winners include Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Classic winning champion, and increasingly successful sire, Blame, 2019 Gr1 Woodward Stakes hero, Preservationist, Canadian Horse Of The Year, Arravale, July Cup winner, Les Arcs, and Arkansas Derby winner (and G1 sire) Archarcharch. Arch, whose gelded son, Tax, ranks as one of the best US 3yos of 2019, having won both the Gr2 Jim Dandy and Gr3 Wither Stakes this year, has been responsible for more than 660 winners, with his progeny having banked in excess of $91 million. This tally looks sure to grow further, with the likes of Preservationist and Tax likely to add to their respective earnings. Preservationist currently ranks as a potential contender for the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Classic, and also won the Gr2 Suburban Stakes earlier in 2019, although he could only finish a well beaten fourth in Saturday’s Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Arch made his mark on both the recent Grr1 Natalma Stakes and G1 Summer Stakes, with his son, Blame, sire of the Natalma winner, Abscond, and Arch’s daughter, Gamely Girl - very closely related to Blame - the dam of Summer Stakes victor, Decorated Invader. Arguably, Arch’s best son to date, is the regally related Blame (he hails from the family of Sadler’s Wells, Nureyev, and Stormy Atlantic), and the latter continues to build his resume as a successful sire in his own right.
Roberto Broodmare Producer Arch is showing signs of shaping up to be an outstanding broodmare sire, as was Kris S, and to date is broodmare sire of more than 40 stakes winners, including recent Grr1 winner, Decorated Invader (Declaration Of War) and 2019 Gr1 Pacific Classic runner up, Draft Pick (Candy Ride). While Arch is already damsire of a Kentucky Derby winner in the form of I’ll Have Another, arguably the most important horse produced by a daughter of Arch thus far is champion and increasingly successful US sire, Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie). Leading First Crop Sire and Sire of 2Yos in North America in 2015, Uncle Mo has already sired over 50 stakes winners, with his seven Gr1 winners headed by Kentucky Derby winner, and champion, Nyquist, and fellow Gr1 winner and sire, Outwork. A consistent producer of stakes winners, the former unbeaten champion 2yo, Uncle Mo has a growing number of sire sons at stud, and he looks likely to build on his impressive start during the coming seasons. A son of Indian Charlie, Uncle Mo was an exceptional racehorse, with his three wins at two including romps in both the Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Gr1 Champagne Stakes. Uncle Mo’s dam, the stakes placed Arch daughter, Playa Maya, is also dam of Irish 1000 Guineas runner up, Could It Be Love (War Front).
Inbreeding Interestingly enough, inbreeding to Arch is now proving successful, with the 2019 Gr1 Del Mar Debutante
The Deep Blue (Snitzel – Simply Carina by El Prado)
Gr1 winner by 3 x Australian Champion Sire
winner and Friday’s Gr1 Chandelier Stakes heroine, Bast (Uncle Mo) closely inbred to the 1998 Gr1 Super Derby winner. From a limited number of runners, Arch has also made his mark in South Africa. His local runners include multiple Equus Champion, Overarching, dam of Gr1 Woolavington 2000 winner, Lady Of The House, and Gr3 Yellowwood Handicap winner,
Arch Mistress, while his daughter, Archerfield is the dam of Listed Ardmore Jamaica Handicap winner, Princess Irene (Duke Of Marmalade). With the likes of Uncle Mo, Blame, and, potentially, Preservationist, the Arch influence looks set to continue and Arch and his descendants could well ensure that Roberto remains a factor in major winners in North America.
Jet Powered!
Klawervlei Stud’s young Jet Master stallion Pomodoro has been in good form of late, and the former Vodacom Durban July winner was amongst the winners again on Saturday. Pomodoro had a pair of winners on Turffontein’s inside track on Saturday, with his son Leopold winning the day’s second race and daughter Invisible landing race four. Trained by Johan Janse Van Vuuren, three-year-old Leopold got off the mark at just the second time of asking, when the Ridgemont Highlands bred gelding ran out a cosy half length winner over 1200 metres. Leopold’s paternal half-sister Invisible provided Pomodoro with yet another winner on the day, when that three-year-old filly Invisible got off the mark in emphatic fashion. The Klawervlei Stud bred filly strode clear, under in-form jockey Raymond Danielson, to win by a length and a half over 1600m. A good second on debut, Invisible races for trainer Sean Tarry and owner Chris Van Niekerk –who not only raced Pomodoro so successfully but who are also now enjoying tremendous success with their July winner’s progeny. South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2017/18, Pomodoro made an instant impression with his first runners headed by Equus Champion and multiple Gr1 winner Return Flight and R4.9 million plus earner Cirillo, while his second crop includes Gr2 Durban Golden Horseshoe runner up Putontheredlight and smart recent debut winner Golden Belle. Pomodoro has two lots on offer at the 2019 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale next month.

Trainers Urged To Play Ball
A
Phumelela are applying hands-on management to optimising field sizes and managing stakes expenditure and have encouraged trainers to consider running maidens in open handicaps.
nd Mike de Kock's success at the Vaal last Thursday when his maiden filly Bold Ellie won a handicap has been cited as a good example. It is pointed out that this is also the norm in countries like the UK, where most horses head into the handicaps as maidens after being allocated a rating by the handicapper after 3 runs. In a letter to trainers recently they write that with the recent removal of ninth races during midweek race meetings and our advice that generally speaking there will be no splitting of races, we note that some races are attracting large numbers of entries/declarations (predominantly maidens), whilst others are allowed to stand despite a paucity of entries/declarations. The best interests of racing and most stakeholders are not being served where large numbers of
horses are either being eliminated or scratched on draw at the expense of allowing another race with a paucity of entries/declarations to stand. In view of this, the Racing Operator will be going forward with immediate effect apply its discretion in deciding to cancel the race with less than the required number of entries/declarations and instead split another race which is evidently oversubscribed in terms of Racing Operator's condition 4.3. This may well be at entry stage so as to allow the split of another race to take place as early as possible. In order to do what we believe is in the best interests of most interested parties, this discretion will not be applied consistently with each situation being viewed on its merits. However, going forward these decisions will hopefully benefit most of you most of the time, but there will be occasions where it does
Tarry In The Groove Spiritofthegroove from the Sean Tarry yard continues to top the log for the R1-million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup over 1400m on Saturday 2 November. The race is restricted to eligible graduates of the 2018 Emperor’s Palace Summer Ready To Run Sales. The field size will be limited to 16 runners plus two reserve runners. The final field will be determined by a panel appointed by the racing operator. Gaian Glory, who won a Graduation Plate at Turffontein on Tuesday, remains in second spot while the biggest mover is Bohica, who also won on Tuesday. The son of Capetown Noir, who is trained by Mike and Adam Azzie, Sean Tarry moved from fifth place to third on the log following his one-length win over Hidden Agenda. The Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale will be held at the TBA Sales Complex in Germiston on Sunday 3 November at 11h00. Visit www.sportingpost.co.za to see the log
Plenty At Stake A second log of standings for possible contestants in the R2,5 million CTS Ready To Run Stakes at Kenilworth on 23 November has been published. The 1400m race is restricted to eligible graduates of the 2018 CTS Ready To Run Sales. Last season’s Premiers Champion Stakes third-placer Rock The Globe currently tops the charts. Please note that the Cape Town RTR Sale will be held on Friday 22 November 2019 at Durbanville Racecourse . Gallops to be held on Friday morning, 22 November 2019. not suit you and we ask you to bear with us and understand that we are attempting to do the best for most of you and the sport as a whole. As this is most likely to affect maiden plates, and to provide more opportunities to race, Trainers are also encouraged to enter their maiden horses in Open handicaps, provided they have had three runs to obtain a merit rating. We have discussed this with the NHA Handicappers, who point out that the advantage in doing this would be that a maiden winning a handicap will most likely be more leniently treated in terms of its rating than if it won in a maiden race where there are no restrictions on what the Handicapper could adjust its rating to. In addition, it goes without saying that a maiden that has had the requisite minimum of three runs without success will generally be more competitive receiving weight against winners in the lower divisions than trying to take on potentially strong maidens at level weights.
Met Countdown The countdown to Africa’s Richest Race Day began on Tuesday with the launch of the Sun Met in Cape Town. The Sun Met is already being billed as the Race of the Decade. If all goes to plan, the race should see defending champion Rainbow Bridge, the Vodacom Durban July winner Do It Again, and the Premier’s Champions Challenge winner Hawwaam line up to – once and for all – determine who carries the crown as the country’s top thoroughbred. Under the theme African Luxury: Visionaries, Cape Town’s most prestigious horse-racing event combines high-end fashion with world-class entertainment. The theme for the 2020 edition of The Sun Met is a celebration of luxury with racing enthusiasts and fashionistas expected to evolve imagination on Race Day.
KZN Partnership On The Up!
G
Hollywoodbets have extended their original R10 million three-year sponsorship of Gold Circle by a further R1,5 million per year with the announcement of some innovative changes that came into effect on 1 October 2019.
old Circle and Hollywoodbets will be in a R1 million joint partnership, each contributing R500k towards rewarding the grooms of winning horses with R1000 for every winner at KZN race meetings. Tokens to the value of R1000 will be presented to the winning groom of every race in KZN. This is in addition to the 1% of stake money that the grooms already receive. “Getting involved in joint CSI projects was always high on the agenda when Gold Circle and Hollywoodbets first met regarding sponsorship initiatives,” said Gold Circle’s Senior Marketing and Events Manager, Stephen Marshall. “This additional grooms’ incentive demonstrates the commitment of both parties to all stakeholders in the horse racing industry. We recognise the critical and integral role that grooms play and we are always looking at ways to illustrate that recognition. Going forward, grooms’ names will also be included in the official race card.” Hollywoodbets Brand and Communications Manager, Devin Heffer, added; “Hollywoodbets is proud to be partnering with Gold Circle on the grooms initiative. Rewarding the winning groom with R1000 for every race at Hollywoodbets Greyville and Hollywoodbets Scottsville is important to us as a brand, and we relish the opportunity to play a tangible part in the empowering of this important sector of horseracing in KZN.”
Colour The World In a further initiative, which will add colour and make horseracing more fun and attractive to a younger audience, Hollywoodbets will sponsor colour-coded saddles cloths, each saddlecloth number corresponding to a specific colour. Recently, this only applied to the last race on the card, but from October 1, it will apply to all races in KZN, excluding certain sponsored race days. “Horse racing is steeped in tradition. However, respect for tradition should not be a barrier to innovation and stimulation. We believe that each small innovation will refresh our product and will go some way in differentiating the KZN offering from horse racing in other parts of the country – which in turn, will hopefully increase the interest, participation and betting on our product,” said Marshall. “The Gold Circle and Hollywoodbets marketing teams will continue to collaborate and introduce new initiatives wherever we can to improve the customer experience on course and on TV.” “This practice currently exists in the USA and South America,” said Heffer. “It is an initiative that allows people who may not follow form, to possibly follow their favourite number, or favourite colour. The consistency with this is that the numbers and colours will always be the same. For example, Number 1 will always be red with a white number. Number 7 will always be orange with a black seven, etc.” “Our goal will be to make these colours as visible and informative as possible, and to simplify the sport of horseracing to the wider viewing public,” said Heffer.
