MICHAELMAS HANDICAP(L) at Hollywoodbets Greyville this Sunday
Racing’s Modern Family
I
Sunday’s Hollywoodbets Greyville feature holds good memories for the Van Zyl family. Veteran jockeyturned-trainer Gavin’s son Gareth saddled the 2016 winner Celtic Captain at his first meeting as a fully fledged conditioner.
t was Friday 28 October 2016 when Gareth saddled his first runners under his own name. His very first representative Northern Storm was a winner, and an hour later Celtic Captain won the Listed then sponsored by Jonsson Workwear Michaelmas Handicap, under Warren Kennedy. The high-riding Kennedy is back on Sunday – this time riding Blackball for Gareth’s Dad, Gavin. And Gareth has his own pair of representatives in topweight, and former Mike de Kock charge, The Dazzler, and the lesser acclaimed, Paths Of Victory. The Dazzler started his career in fine style when winning at 50-1 for trainer James Goodman. The son of Mogok has proven a decent
handicapper over time, picking up three further wins and some eyecatching place money, and has his first run in 15 weeks since a very decent third behind Shenanigans in the Consolation July. On best form he has a shout. Stablemate Paths Of Victory also returns from a break following an outing on Durban July day. The son of Noble Tune pulled up distressed after going the 3000m of the Gold Vase for the first time. He ran just over 5 lengths behind Walter Smoothie but looks a better proposition over shorter. The Sporting Post toprated White Lightning gets the blinkers fitted and now looks to improve after failing to get beyond a maiden victory in his 3yo season. Rested after a fair fourth in the KZN Derby last term, he has had two
prep runs and showed some pace when beaten 2,70 lengths behind the paper weighted Jack Of Hearts last run. He strips fit. His stablemate Our Coys carries a handy 52kg galloping weight and is a dangerous sort who could grab a place cheque with some luck in running. The son of Uncle Mo is in under sufferance but shouldn’t be disregarded in a tricky race and with the services of the astute competitor, Muzi Yeni. The smart 5yo Blackball has been rested 19 weeks since beaten 1,25 lengths by the progressive The Sultan’s Bazaar under a welter 63.5kgs last time. He showed nice versatile promise on both surfaces earlier and could be right there if not too much in need of a run. Wealthy was a surprise winner of the Listed Michael Roberts Handicap in January and his form has tapered off a bit since then. His running on fourth behind Walter Smoothie in the Gold Vase saw his connections take their chances in the Gold Cup. He ran no kind of race after making respiratory noises and comes in here off a twelve week break.
The 7yo Silver Rose is a hardknocking 7-time winner who never runs a bad race. In his favour, he has had a run earlier this month and will strip fitter than some of his opposition. Pilot Gareth Wright knows him well and he will stretch them. One of the fittest of the
eight runners the Querari filly Arianos Shadow – the only member of the fairer sex in the field of eight – was a stakes placed 2yo but has been quite disappointing. She now steps into mixed company and has a stiff task. Fitness is probably the single biggest variable in a

race where a decent pace looks assured by the pacy Silver Rose. White Lightning strikes us as much better than a onetime winner and he is the choice – but don’t write off Blackball. And they obviously can’t let Silver Rose get too far ahead.
Puller Out Front
While he doesn’t have a runner at Sunday’s Hollywoodbets Greyville meeting, it is worth noting that Hollywood sponsored Garth Puller leads the KZN trainer’s championship at this early stage of the season.
Gold Circle report that Puller was realistic enough to admit he did not have the stable firepower at this stage to hang on to this lead. “We usually have a good run at the beginning of the season. But I know how these things change and we don’t have the top horses to compete with the big yards in the Champions Season," said the former jockey who has has 68 horses at present. A lot of them are youngsters. He has had 15 winners this season from 100 runners. Puller arrives at Summerveld before 04h00 every morning and only leaves at 18h30. Meanwhile, nine-times KZN champion trainer Dennis Drier is currently lacking in big race firepower and will only be sending a ‘low key’ string down for the Cape Summer Of Champions this year. Drier is sure to make a bold bid for a tenth KZN championship, although he is currently
only in fourth place with nine winners gained at a strike rate of 10,59%. Dennis Bosch and Gavin Van Zyl are in joint second place on eleven winners apiece, achieved at a strike rate of 18,97% and 17,19% respectively. Johan Janse van Vuuren is in joint-fourth place with Drier on nine winners. Former KZN champion trainer Duncan Howells is in a rebuilding phase following the departure of his chief owner Dave McLean, but he has still managed to send out seven winners this season to put him in joint sixth place on the KZN log together with Alyson Wright. Next on the log with six winners each are Tony Rivalland, Kumaran Naidoo, Dean Kannemeyer and Brett Crawford. Drier and Howells have dominated the KZN championship over the last few years.

Brett Crawford marked his 19 years of training horses with the milestone of his 1000th winner at Durbanville on Saturday, courtesy of the Dynasty colt, Bag Of Tricks.
rawford trains the grey for his staunch patrons Ridgemont and the Kieswetter family have struck a rich vein of form in recent weeks, topping the local owner log. But Bag Of Trick’s victory was not a velvet smooth pop the champagne moment! The Highlands bred 3yo was not the easiest of rides and Corne Orffer earned his commission the hard way – and picked up an unwanted holiday in the process. Bag Of Tricks had it all to do inside the final 200m but plugged on to gain the advantage – a neck separated the top four past the post. The rider of the runner-up Brother Louis wasn’t happy though. The Stipes reported that approaching the 150m SNOWY MOUNTAIN (R Fourie) lost position when forced to ease off the heels of BAG OF TRICKS (C Orffer) which shifted outwards. Jockey C Orffer, the rider of BAG OF TRICKS, was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7 in that he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to SNOWY MOUNTAIN (R Fourie) at the 150m. Orffer signed an Admission of Guilt and was suspended from riding for 7 days. Dates 16/10/2019 to 22/10/2019 inclusive.
Leaving the 100m BROTHER LOUIS (D Dillon) rolled away slightly from BAG OF TRICKS (C Orffer). An objection was lodged by Jockey D Dillon, the rider of the 2nd placed horse BROTHER LOUIS against the winner BAG OF TRICKS on the grounds of intimidation and interference in the latter stages. After reviewing video from various angles and hearing the evidence put forward by the connections of both horses, the board were of the opinion that BROTHER LOUIS (D Dillon) would not have beaten BAG OF TRICKS (C Orffer). Therefore the objection was overruled. The deposit was refunded. So the Stipes didn’t spoilt the party and all’s well that ends well! Crawford’s 1000th winner came up at a 14,28% win strike-rate. The Zimbabwean-born horseman did his apprenticeship with Mike de Kock, Eric Sands and Dennis Drier before branching on his own. He worked for Sabine Plattner before opening his licence in 2009. His two other winners on Saturday were the highly progressive Jackson filly Pretty Young Thing who signalled herself a contender for Classic glory this summer. A race earlier, Kilindini had opened Crawford’s account with a fluent win in the Maiden 1400m.
Calvin Habib gets down to keep Mary O going (Credit: Candiese Marnewick)
Summerveld trainer Lezeanne Forbes was rewarded for her initiative to keep Sunday’s Hollywoodbets Greyville feature alive, when her stable elect Mary O went all the way to score a deserved victory.
I
t’s an ongoing puzzle as to why the programmers put on races that obviously don’t suit the needs of the market. Are trainers even consulted? Seems not, as there was nominal interest and the 3yo fillies non black-type feature, the Beach Beauty Mile, came close to being scrapped before Lezeanne used her initiative and included two first-timers to keep the numbers. The seven horse field stood up eventually and after the withdrawal of Michael Roberts’ Winter Sun, six fillies went to post. While she looked to have a little to do at the
weights, Mary O was taken to lead by jockey Calvin Habib who backed her superior fitness. Controlling the pace all the way in a slowrun affair, Mary O kept galloping relentlessly down the straight and clinched the honours by a head from the gutsy Electric Surge in a time of 97,48 secs. Jack’s Bird was never in the hunt and can only improve. She ran third and 1,80 lengths off the winner. Bred by Lindi and Paul Garlicki’s beautiful Connemara Stud in Paarl, Mary O is by the in-form Oratorio (Danehill) out of the bravely named four-time winner, Mary Hinge (Second Empire). The latter won up to 2400m for Glen Kotzen. Avontuur-based Oratorio has enjoyed a top season so far and is vying for a top of the sires log position. Mary O has won 2 races with 1 place from 4 starts for stakes of R158 225. She should pay to follow and looks like she will go 2000m plus in time.

Phumelela have advised that due principally to a decline in TAB tote revenue in the 2018-19 racing season and the withholding of the Gauteng provincial levy, prize money at its racecourses will be reduced by around 13% from November.
M
ore than half of the prize money at Phumelela tracks is derived from a set percentage of TAB tote turnover, which is governed by a stakes agreement between the company and the Racing Association, which represents racehorse owners in Phumelela regions. In terms of the agreed stakes formula, set percentages of other Phumelela revenue streams also flow directly into the prize-money pool. Total stakes for each racing season (1 August to 31 July) are mostly determined by the monies generated by this prize-money formula in the previous season. The amount allocated for stakes in the first five months of each season is based on an estimate of the amount likely to be generated by the prize-money formula in the previous season. Once the figures have been finalised and audited, any adjustments needed to
balance the estimated total to the actual total are applied to prize money in the last seven months of the season (January to July).
Cape
Prize money in the Western Cape is governed by an arrangement in terms of which total stakes are set at 26% of the combined net stakes pool in Phumelela regions. After engaging with the Racing Association, Phumelela and Kenilworth Racing wish to advise stakeholders that prize money will be reduced with effect from 1 November 2019 in order to spread the impact across nine months of the season, rather than waiting for the audited total and only applying the reduction from January. Should the various audits, however, reveal a higherthan-expected total, stakes would be adjusted accordingly from January to July next year. The stakes pool has been impacted by various factors,
including declining TAB tote turnover and a negative return from fixed-odds operator Betting World. Added to that is the loss of the Gauteng Provincial Government levy on winning bets with fixed-odds operators, 30% of which used to flow to the stakes pool. It should be noted that Phumelela is currently negotiating with the Gauteng Provincial Government and the Gauteng Gambling Board in an attempt to have its share of the levy reinstated.
Tellytrack Squabble
Simultaneously, Phumelela is in discussions with the Gauteng Gambling Board and fixed-odds operators to resolve the long-standing commercial dispute around the provision of Tellytrack. The other major impact on prize money is that the stakes pool will not benefit from share dividends this year. Normally 80% of the share dividends accruing to the
Thoroughbred Horseracing Trust from its 26.7% shareholding in Phumelela are added to the stakes pool. This amounted to some R19 million for the 201718 financial years. But as a consequence of the collective negative factors impacting Phumelela’s profitability, no dividend will be paid for 2018-19. The Racing Association, through its Stakes Committee members, have engaged with Phumelela and Kenilworth Racing and innovative ways of addressing the reduction in stakes have been agreed. Details are as follows: Reducing the number of races at midweek meetings to eight. Reducing stakes of selected major Grade 1 races, as well as the majority of Grade 2 and Grade 3 race so as to lessen the burden on minor-race stakes. Introducing different minorrace stakes levels in and out of season on the Highveld and in the
Pools – TAB Dive In
Having been notified of a recent query relating to a significant increase in certain pool sizes, with particular reference being placed on the quartet bet for local racing over the last week to ten days, the tote can confirm that we have seen some pools with a growth over expectation and above the average pool size.
T
he Phumelela Team have addressed Sporting Post Readers in response to queries about bigger pool sizes in recent weeks. SP reader and lifetime racing fan Philip Goldberg posted on www.sportingpost.co.za recently, observing that it was interesting how quartet pools have grown of late. “Whereas before, we battled to get R200,000 into a midweek quartet, yesterday, we saw a number of pools exceeding R500000. This has been noticed for about a week now. I would like to hear the operators take on this one (no assumptions been made),” he added.
Injection The Phumelela Team wrote that this is not a new phenomenon and is most commonly as a result of either an increase in interest from a foreign territory/customer or an additional high turnover territory that is added to the group of countries commingling on that specific day or race. These fluctuations in pool sizes can occasionally be on the back of increased local interest but are generally dictated by the fact that: 1) Foreign customers are selective in the events that they choose to bet on and do not play every race and 2) even though a high volume territory might be commingled into our pools, very often the race will still not get broadcast in that territory due to clashes, race delays, etc. and only the races that make it to broadcast will draw turnover. However, we are always cognisant of the fact that, what might seem to be a ‘sudden’ change
or increase in betting volume, can be seen as a potential indicator of unscrupulous behaviour and, as such, we continue to monitor all events to ensure the validity and source of the turnover and, in addition, our partners in the Isle Of Man continually monitor all betting activity through the international commingling hub to ensure the integrity of all trading. As the tote is based on a pari-mutuel or pool betting platform, how many customers win in each individual pool has no impact on the profitability or financial position of the TAB.
More Is More In the long run, the more turnover or players we have playing into our pools, and ultimately the more winners we have, the better it is for both the tote and our totalisator customers. Any additional betting activity into our South African tote pools, whether from local or international customers, offers both increased liquidity and the opportunity for bigger dividends to all South African customers and, furthermore, all goes to help fund and sustain our local sport of horseracing and the stakes pot. Therefore, the tote welcomes all additional betting turnover, audited and monitored as it is, into our pools and can confirm that (and in particular to the instances raised as a concern) we have no suspicion of any illegal or unscrupulous behaviour of any sort in this regard. As TAB, our mission and goal remains the improvement of the tote product and the growth of turnover in all our pools, while maintaining the integrity of the product and brand to provide equal opportunity to all customers.
Western Cape (the Highveld feature season runs from 1 October to the first Saturday in May, whilst the Western Cape feature season runs from 1 November to the end of February) Introducing a lower stakes level for minor races restricted to fillies and mares (with the exception of Maiden, Maiden Juvenile and Juvenile Plates) across all regions Full details of the new stakes levels can be viewed on www. sahorseracing.co.za from Monday 14 October. The Racing Association has also taken a decision to change the distribution of stakes in all races run in Phumelela regions (Highveld, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape). With effect from 1 November, the winning portion of the race stake will be reduced from 62.5% to 58% and redistributed to pay down to 10th place as follows: 1st – 58% 2nd – 20% 3rd – 10% 4th – 5% 5th – 2% 6th to 10th – 1% each In the event of less than 10 starters, any stakes not allocated will be stockpiled for future distribution.
It is worth noting that as things stand the current stakes pot receives zero revenue from TAB tote (open) bets taken with fixedodds operators. As an example, for every R1 million wagered on Pick 6’s in the form of open bets, R75000 is lost to the stakes’ pot. The magnitude of the lost revenue to prize money is highlighted by the National Gambling Board statistics for 2018. They show that R3,9 billion was wagered on horseracing on the tote versus R7,68 billion with fixed-odds operators, of which a substantial portion can be attributed to open bets. Declining tote betting turnovers on horseracing are a trend facing many racing jurisdictions around the world and are by no means unique to South Africa. That said, Phumelela is totally committed to engaging with regulators and fixed-odds operators to find solutions for the issues that have impacted so negatively on its business and the sport of horseracing. Tracks Inspected or Not?
We keep getting assurances that racecourses are inspected prior to racemeetings.
A
recent incident at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, where a wet patch was only discovered after an accident, highlighted the responsibility aspect of whether the pre-raceday inspection duty lies with the racing operator or the National Horseracing Authority. The outcome of that incident was that assurances were given that the track manager walks the track. That seems a touch casual, to be frank. When? Is it on his duty list? Does he submit a clearance report to the Stipes? At Turffontein last Tuesday, after the running of the first race, the jockeys raised concerns regarding an area on the track between the 800m and 600m. A track inspection revealed that there was a significant area of wear and tear at approximately the 800m. It was decided to remove the false rail which would allow the horses space to race away from the area. The published track configuration was also changed. So what happened to track management walking the track? Why did it take the jockeys to
discover it when they raced over it? Interestingly, in Hong Kong it seems they inspect the track between every race. The HKJC issued a statement last Wednesday that stated that when carrying out a routine track inspection at Happy Valley after Race 7 and before the commencement of Race 8, Hong Kong Jockey Club staff identified three small opened containers of paint on the back straight of the track. The material was cleared away immediately. It was decided to hold horses behind the starting gates to ensure that the start of Race 8 would only commence when Racing Stewards were satisfied that it was safe to go ahead. An additional number of security staff were deployed alongside the normal patrolling security staff to ensure no similar incident could occur. After noting the report from security staff, Racing Stewards were satisfied that the remaining two races could commence. The Club said that it takes this incident very seriously and is looking into the case thoroughly and will review security measures.

Alexis Ramsay
A
From the golden acres of Mooi River to the rolling green hills of Taylor Made Farm in Jessamine County, Kentucky, Alexis Ramsay is living proof on the hoof that ‘love horse, will travel’.
lexis tells the Sporting Post that when she packed her bags nine years ago and bid farewell to KwaZulu-Natal, moving her life, heart and soul with her family to New Zealand, she could never have wildly imagined the adventure that lay ahead. A Barn Foreman at Taylor Made, where she commenced in the middle of July as a Yearling Groom, Alexis completed the Saratoga Yearling Sale and Keeneland Sale, and returned to the farm at the end of September to fill her current position. It is thanks to her parents and famous Aunt Pippa Mickleburgh that at about the age of ten she started being involved with the yearlings at the sales, showing them or walking. “I worked for Pippa one year in Germiston, and with that I also took a horse through the ring for Terry and Annabel Andrews of Sorrento. We moved to Sibaya for the sales and I think it was the second sale that Verna Roberts asked me to take a yearling for her through the ring. It was through these sales that I was also able to meet Steve Davies.” She keeps a diary of the twists and turns of a life lived to the fullest since the flight touched down in New Zealand in 2010. She has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names and greatest horses internationally, and has absorbed every ounce of energy along the way. “Sales work is not easy. It is long days, lots of miles. The Keeneland Sale I have just completed was about 18 days of 5am to 6pm each day. I walked 34km in one day – in fact I averaged about 23km/day at the sale!” she laughs. In 2017 Alexis flew 37 flights and worked at 32 sales. She also made a deal with herself to try and ride in every country she visits. She has ticked New Zealand, Australia, Germany, the UK, Iceland and the USA, in that box, so far. But back to the beginning. The Ramsays were part of the fabric of Natal racing and breeding. Dad Craig trained for years and bought Golden Acres Stud in the 1980’s. He is a man who held various positions that took up so much of his
waking hours that he had to give up training. Craig Ramsay was highly respected and is still sorely missed in KZN racing and breeding circles. His list of office-bearer positions reads like the CV of ten different people! Chairman of KZN Breeders Association, Director and Steward of Gold Circle, Director of KZN Trainer's Association, Council Member of TBA, Lifetime Member of National Horseracing Authority Life Member of Gold Circle, Life Colour Holde, Breeder representative for SA International Gambling, Chairman of various sales, marketing, liaison sub-committees. The Ramsays emigrated in May 2010, with Craig and Tammy seeking a better future for their son Wesley and daughter Alexis. They located to Cambridge, which is on the North Island and onto Cambridge Thoroughbred Lodge where they did two seasons and then a further season with the stallions. Alexis tells how in South Africa, foalings are done inside and in NZ outside. “We did it ‘our way’ which raised a lot of eyebrows. The Kiwis thought we were mad! The big difference was that we had to do the work. Bed the stables, bring the horses in and out, feed out in the paddocks etc,” she recalls. “I remember thinking one day that nobody at home would believe the site of Mom and Dad driving an old tractor in the pouring rain and feeding horses out in muddy paddocks. But in a way they enjoyed it.” Tammy and Craig went into retail and changed direction – buying into a lotto/men's gifts/cigar/ barber shop and ran that for about 3 or 4 years. They dabbled in and were extremely successful in home buying and restoration and selling. In July 2017 the family purchased an avocado and kiwi farm in a town called Katikati – with amazing views of the ocean and mountain range. Alexis recalls the initial shock of her immigration to the land of the long white cloud. Like the fact that the house on the farm where they first lived had no keys. They left their gumboots outside the coffee shop in town and they were still there when they got back. She says that the move was initially sad, but the farm was the life she knew apart from school.
“Every morning during the breeding season I'd wake up and run to the laundry to see if Dad's wet weather gear was out, and if I saw it I knew we had foalings, so I'd get ready for school super-fast and run to the barn to see the new foals. Our neighbour who would take us to school, used to hoot for me because I'd make us late for school. But once I accepted the changes, I became so excited about it.” The now 25 year old unattached horse-lover was born in 1993 and raised at Golden Acres where she worked horses and recalls riding upside Garth Puller. She was schooled at Treverton in Mooi River, and at St John's DSG in Pietermaritzburg. She completed high schooling a Cambridge High School New Zealand and at Vet Nursing College at WINTEC in NZ. Alexis recalls starting a job on a stud called The Oaks and on her first day was given a grooming bag and a fork and told to start grooming horses and mucking out. She worked her first sales prep there and her first sale in NZ whereafter she went into studying nursing. In 2013 she worked at Scone Equine hospital in Australia for five months and then back to NZ where she worked for Wentwood Grange. She did their prep and sale. She graduated in August 2014. “I went back to work on the farm till after the sale in 2015 and filled the time working for the SPCA.” She tells how Mike Fleming of Bhima Thoroughbreds in Scone has helped her so much. “I worked for him from April 2016 through till August 2018. I have been extremely privileged to work under his yearling Manager, Melissa Jordan, who after my parents has truly been an inspiration. Her work ethic is incredible, she's a fantastic horse person and leads by example. She taught me so much just from me observing her working with horses.” In 2017 Alexis went to Europe to work their sales circuit. She was working the Easter sale in Australia when Dr John McVeigh came to vet one of their horses. He offered her a job. From there it is a whirlwind. First it was Gestüt Fährhof, Dr Andreas Jacobs farm in Germany. Then to Italy and Centro Equino
Arcadia, for Dr Giovanna Ramano. A sale in Ireland for Baroda and Colbinstown, where she got to meet Mick Flannigan. She then flew Sweden for their sale. Back to Ireland for Baroda again. Then to Newmarket to work for the McVeigh Team at Tattersalls. Between Tatts Sales Alexis travelled around Iceland, back to Newmarket, and then back to Australia in November. in 2018 she worked again at Scone Equine hospital, employed now as an ICU nurse. “My first year, the great mare Sun Classique came to the hospital. Sadly she didn't survive, but I grew up watching her race,” she recalls fondly. Up to July this year, Alexis worked in the UK for Baker McVeigh. “I loved it so much. I got to meet Mr William Haggis and his wife Maureen, who is the daughter of Lester Piggott - dad had his book in the library growing up! I was privileged to be able to work with Sea of Class, Awesome Tank, Celtic Manner and so many of his amazing horses. I went to Shadwell, worked in Hugo Palmer and George Scott's yards, spent time in Mike de Kock’s yard at Abington Place. And worked with the Aussie mare Houtzen. “ She has also visited Iceland. “I went to the Calgary Stampede prior to starting at Taylor Made. Meeting Monty Roberts this year was awesome too. He has an extremely close relationship with Dr Jacobs' farm in Germany, so it was a quite personal for me to meet him.” “The reason I'm here at Taylor Made is to help decide if I want to go nursing full time or do stud work. At the moment my decision hasn’t been made. I loved my job in Italy and would go back in a heartbeat. I also enjoyed working with Baker McVeigh. But who knows what will come out of working here? Who I might meet or what the farm has in store for me?” Working in the industry in Japan and India are also on Alexis’ dream list. “I need to travel to South America too maybe I'll find a polo player there!”

Puzzling!
On Saturday at Turffontein, S’manga Khumalo was fined R3 500 for contravening Rule 58.10.2 for striking his mount more than 12 times in the race. The Board took into account the excessive number of strikes, the fact that he won the race, as well as his recent poor record with regards to a contravention of this Rule and Guideline. Yet on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville, he is found guilty of the same rule by the same NHRA. The Board considered the manner in which the crop was used and his recent riding record. He was fined R1000. Work it out.

What are the consequences for horses and the SA breeding industry? The majority of horse owners the world over are still deworming horses as they did 40 years ago - by the calendar regardless of need or species affecting the horse, writes Worm-ex Lab’s Dr Karl MA van Laeren (BVSc) Four major groups of parasites need to be considered :
1. Small Strongyles or Cyathostomins These worms live in the gut wall to the cecum (the very large equivalent of a human’s appendix but designed to digest grass) before maturing and migrating into gut lumen or cavity They often occur in numbers exceeding 100,000 worms in the gut wall. As adults they migrate out of the wall into the intestinal cavity where they live on bacteria and protozoa and cause little harm. This is where reproduction and egg production occurs and is the principle egg seen in horse’s dung. If a rare mass emergence of larvae from the gut wall occurs then this could be fatal in young horses.
2. Large Strongyles These worms are the real “bad boys “of yesteryear. They migrate beyond the gut wall and into the arteries of the abdomen, or in the liver and other abdominal sites. Left untreated, they form masses, which can lead to thrombosis, damage to arteries and masses breaking loose can lead to blockage of the arterial tree, starving the intestine of blood supply, which causes areas of the intestine to break off, resulting in colics and other complications. Fortunately, nowadays Large Strongyles are all but extinct due to the deworming efficacy on many studs.
3. Non strongylid Gastrointestinal nematodes (parasites) or GIN’s These include Parascaris equorum (Ascarids), Habronema sp. and Draschia megastoma (Summer sore worms), Oxyuris equi (pinworms), Trichostrongylus axei (bankrupt stomach worms contracted from cattle and sheep especially in winter rainfall areas. This is the only parasite horses and ruminants share in common) and Strongyloides westerii (transmitted
in mare’s milk to foals). On studs and racing stables the Ascarid worm that develops after passing through the lungs of horses is the most spectacular due to its large pencillike size. The eggs of this GIN are thick walled and very well designed to survive in the environment for years overcoming freezing cold or hot dry spells. As these parasites pass through the horse’s respiratory system, left uncontrolled, they can result in respiratory issues as well as intestinal blockages, leading to colics and associated complications.
4. Tapeworms that undergo an indirect lifecycle needing a forage mite to complete the life cycle Parasite control is effected by the administration of anthelmintics (a group of antiparasitic drugs that expel parasitic worms (helminths) and other internal parasites from the body by either stunning or killing them and without causing significant damage to the host. Two to four to even eight times a year, all horses, regardless of age or immunity, get dewormed willy-nilly. The more we, as humans, get exposed to antibiotics the more likely a bacterium will mutate into a super bug. The same principle applies to our horse’s parasites or GIN’s. The more dewormers used per year the greater the likelihood of resistance occurring and the faster it is likely to happen. Anthelmintic resistance (termed AR in the scientific literature) occurs when worms get exposed to an effective dewormer, but fail to respond satisfactorily. A satisfactory response is a reduction of at least 95% on the pre-worming worm egg count. So, if a horse shows 1000 eggs per gram of dung predeworming, they should have 50 or less eggs two weeks after deworming to meet the 95% acceptance level. If not, they are showing signs of AR. Small Strongyles are the most common parasites in horses and also the most commonly susceptible to AR. However,
To Win or Not To Win
There were questions about the eligibility of Captain Carlos who ran in the Flamingo Park Maiden Plate first race on Monday. The Sporting Post took up the matter of the son of Jay Peg’s participation as he was the runner-up to the subsequently ‘disqualified’ Elusive Kat at Fairview on 21 June, and is thus technically a winner. What confused the issue was that after the publishing of the NHRA’s recent findings following an inquiry on 27 September on the disqualification of Elusive Kat, Captain Carlos was ‘promoted’ and reflected as a winner of the race on 21 June 2019 by the NRB. Since our query, this has been amended by the bureau. NHRA CEO Vee Moodley confirmed to the Sporting Post that the trainer of Elusive Kat was still entitled to an appeal and that the status quo of the actual form shall remain intact until that process is finalized – alternatively, if the appeal route is not followed, that it has passed via the review board. So at this point in time, Elusive Kat is still a winner and Captain Carlos is still a maiden.
there are over 40 species of small Strongyles and only one or two may have mutated into a resistant species. So, a count may only drop from 1000 eggs per gram of dung to say 150, which indicates only 85% reduction. This is an indication that some worm species are not being effectively destroyed and it may be worth trying another dewormer to rid the horse of the remaining worms. This war against parasites is won or lost by the accumulation of small victories and/ or oversights.
Resistance
As young horses carry the highest worm burdens and may be exposed to up to eight dewormings per year, this is the portion of the horse population that has shown the greatest tendency to develop resistance. In essence, resistance is occurring in the Performance Horse and Thoroughbred studs and has the potential to spread to in contact horses. To date we have encountered no less than ten such young Thoroughbreds that fail to clear fully after ivermectin dewormers. In such cases, we then advocate moxidectin dewormers which may reduce the burden some more. However, these horses never drop to the mandatory 9599% reduction levels one would expect with macrocyclic lactone dewormers (the family of drugs containing ivermectin, abamectin, the cattle dewormer, doramectin, and moxidectin). There is evidence of Macrocyclic lactone dewormer resistance in sheep, cattle and in horses. We diagnosed our first case in a horse from the Eastern Cape in 2016. A new molecule, monopantel, developed in New Zealand is now available for sheep and goats but
alas, the first cases of resistance reported in 2013 in NZ. Horses, however, have no new “get out of jail solution” if resistance is encountered, as monopantel’s safety in horses and in pregnant mares is not assured. We are having to revert to older families of drugs or a combination of deworming drugs to clear resistant parasites. Stomach tubing with up to three drugs has been required in some Ascarid infections. As long as horse owners and even their veterinarians remain confused or unaware of the risk factors of repeated deworming with, moxidectin in particular, GIN’s, especially in young horses, are prone to encourage and select for resistant genes to evolve and disseminate to other horses sharing the same paddock space. Stud farms are breeding good equine genetics (bloodstock) through selecting strong compatible pedigrees, but inadvertently, excessive and unnecessary dewormings are breeding bad persisting parasite genes with a propensity to show resistance to drugs that previously proved highly effective. Anthelmintic resistance is now a worldwide phenomenon. Just think of the old days were one syringe of dewormer was truly BROAD SPECTRUM. This term is now a dream of the past as Ascarids, pinworms and now Small Strongyles all show signs of AR.
Selective
The Southern African evidence pertaining to AR has mainly come from the Thoroughbred studs producing stock for racing purposes. Usually this trend to AR is only noticed when these horses arrive at the few training establishments practicing selective deworming. Selective deworming
Sun Met Suffers The Sun Met is the biggest casualty in Phumelela’s stakes reduction programme with the value of the Cape Town showpiece dropping from R5 million to R3 million. It used to be run for R2,5 million but the stake was doubled in 2017. Michael Clower reports on www.goldcircle.co.za that the other main features on February 1 are unchanged – with the two CTS sales races worth R5m each and the Majorca and Cape Flying both remaining on R1 million – but the Western Cape Stayers and the Politician both drop R50 000 to R350,000 and R200,000 respectively in line with the reductions already known for Grade 2 and Grade 3 races. The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate on January 11 stays at R1.5 million and the Paddock Stakes on R1 million but the Peninsula Handicap and the Chairman’s Cup that day take R50 000 drops to R350 000 and R200 000. The revamped Cape Derby meeting on February 22 – intended as a showpiece for the Asian Racing Conference – sees the Diadem and Prix Du Cap both taking R50 000 drops but the R1 Derby is untouched as is the Cape Nursey (R200,000) and the R150,000 Jet Master.
Cape Elections Make Your Cross The voting papers for election to the Western Cape Chapter of the Racing Association have been mailed to members. Messrs Ashwin Reynolds, Philip Sarembock, Kevin Sommerville and Troy Finch are the nominees.
Completed voting forms must be returned by no later than noon on Friday 1 November 2019 in terms of the options outlined. See full details and pen-pics of the nominees on www.sportingpostco.za
is an evidence-based deworming protocol where only horses with over a predetermined threshold level are dewormed. Studs and racing stables should do worm egg counts (WEC) and especially worm egg count reduction tests (WECRT) to establish the efficacy of their deworming drug of choice and whether AR is present in their herd. “Is our deworming achieving a 95% plus outcome post worming?” should be on every forward-thinking stud personnel’s mind. If doing these tests on the entire draft of yearlings and two year olds in one’s care is initially unattractive, one should consider testing a sector of the stud to establish whether the drugs one is employing Is producing the desired outcome. A reduction of 95% plus should be achievable on an individual basis and certainly on a stud basis to ensure that one’s deworming protocol is effective. The one clear oddity about AR is that it never shows up in an entire draft of horses. One or more individuals may be affected while other members of the herd may show no signs. So, throw one’s net out as far as possible as the problem is still very selective in distribution. Only by looking critically at ones deworming methods are we likely to avert a looming disaster. For many owners and trainers, though, it is the reductions across a broad sweep of maidens and handicaps that will be felt most. An ordinary maiden, for instance, will drop from R80,000 to R70,000 at Kenilworth and Durbanville. There are also cuts at the other Phumelela-administered courses – Turffontein, the Vaal, Fairview and Flamingo Park – with falling betting turnover to blame as well as the loss of the Gauteng Provincial Government levy on wining bets. Interestingly there are no cuts planned – for the time being anyway - at the two Hollywoodbetssponsored KZN courses Greyville and Scottsville even though many of their bread-and-butter races offer higher stakes than those in Cape Town. Hasili’s Ideal World
V
Not for the first time, the influence of Juddmonte’s late broodmare extraordinaire Hasili (Kahyasi) was felt in a number of graded features around the world recently. Hasili’s grandson Ideal World (Kingmambo) is the sire of recent Gr2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge winner Vistula, while Hasili sons Champs Elysees (Danehill) and Dansili (Danehill) have both made their mark in a number of major feature races over the past few weeks.
istula became Ideal World’s 22nd stakes winner when she won the R350 000 Turffontein feature, and her dual stakes winning sire went close to having a feature race double on the same day when his four-year-old daughter Helen’s Ideal ran third in the Gr3 Diana Stakes at Durbanville. Vistula and Helen’s Ideal are from Ideal World’s fifth crop of 57 registered foals. This crop is currently responsible for 29 winners, from 50 runners, with Vistula, Helen’s Ideal along with short-lived Gr1 SA Derby winner Samurai Warrior, Kenilworth Fillies Nursery/Irridescence Stakes winner Coral Bay and Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes winner Inverroche headliners of that foal crop. At the time of writing, Ideal World has been responsible for 232 runners of which 37 are black type performers, with his star performers including the Equus Champions Smart Call and Hermoso Mundo. Ideal World, who is out of Hasili’s champion, and Breeders’ Cup winning, daughter Banks Hill (a full-sister to Champs Elysees and Dansili), has been consistently successful since retiring to stud. With his pedigree, and record of siring above average daughters, it is hard to imagine that Ideal World will not go on to become a successful broodmare sire. His close relative, the ill-fated Champs Elysees, is the sire of 2018 Gr1 Qipco 1000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook who bounced back to winning form when accounting for four Gr1 winners when victorious in the Gr1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket recently. The four-year-old filly, who appears to relish the Newmarket track, has won three of her last four
starts, with Billesdon Brook’s latest score taking her earnings to close on £700 000. One of five Gr1 winners out of Hasili, and Canada’s Horse Of The Year in 2009, Champs Elysees has been represented by 11 stakes winners in 2019 including repeat Gr1 Australian Cup winner Harlem (third in Saturday’s Gr1 Ladbrokes Stakes), while his daughter Durance was second in Saturday’s Gr1 E.P. Taylor Stakes. Champs Elysees’ full-brother Dansili, also sire of a 1000 Guineas winner in the form of Miss France, is damsire of recent Gr1 First Lady Stakes winner Uni (More Than Ready). Hasili’s best sire son, and one of Danehill’s elite sire sons, the now retired Dansili is currently the sire of more than 130 stakes winners having been Champion Sire in France back in 2009. He has been responsible for five stakes winners in 2019 including Gr3 Modesty Handicap winner Juliet Foxtrot, while his son Stratum captured Saturday’s historic Emirates Cesarewitch Stakes at Newmarket. However, Dansili’s greatest success in 2019 has been as a sire of sires, and broodmare sire. Recent The aforementioned Uni is one of 14 stakes winners produced this year by a daughter of Dansili, with the latter also broodmare sire of fellow Gr1 winners Channel (Prix de Diane) and Aspetar (Preis von Europa). Other Gr1 winners produced by daughters of Dansili include Chicquita, Astaire, Nezwaah, Capla Temptress and Breeders’ Cup Mile winning sire Expert Eye. (Top class filly Magic Wand (Galileo) is another top galloper produced by a Dansili mare, while the sire is also damsire of Gin Fizz (Soft Falling Rain), who was second
Vistula winning Gr2 Joburg Spring (F&M) Challenge to Vistula in the 2019 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge). Dansili has also enjoyed notable success as a sire of sires this year, thanks to the likes of Harbinger, Zoffany and Bated Breath. The latter has had a breakout year in 2019, with the former Gr2 Temple Stakes winner responsible for such notable stakes winners this year as Daahyeh (Gr2 Rockfel Stakes), Space Traveller (Gr3 Jersey Stakes, Gr2 Solonaway Stakes), Maid In India (Gr3 World Trophy), Simply Breathless (Gr3 Wilshire Stakes), Worth Waiting (Gr2 Dahlia Stakes)
Oratorio’s Son On Cue!
Avontuur’s high-riding Danehill stallion Oratorio’s son Cue The Music produced a commendable first run in Hong Kong on Saturday when finishing fourth behind the record-breaking Aethero in the HK$ 2,1 million Wo Tik Handicap over 1000m at Sha Tin.
The classy Aethero marches on to the Gr1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint after smashing Sacred Kingdom’s twelve year long record for the Sha Tin 1000m. Now trained by David Ferraris, Cue The Music, the 2017/18 KZN Champion 2yo male, only arrived in Hong Kong in May this year. He is owned by Mr & Mrs Julian Chow Kai Wo, Chow Wing Shuen and Chow Cheuk Wai. He was ridden on by SA Champion jockey Lyle Hewitson, who is still out to break his duck after just 4 places from 35 rides. In a frustrating start for the SA star, he had to sit out an early suspension from the previous season in his home country, and has not enjoyed the best quality of rides, generally.
The Deep Blue (Snitzel – Simply Carina by El Prado)
and Breathtaking Look (Gr3 Sceptre Stakes). Bated Breath’s paternal halfbrother Harbinger is the sire of star Japanese racemare Deirdrevictorious in the 2019 Gr1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, while another Dansili horse Zoffany, sire of 30 stakes winners thus far, has had another good season with his representatives including Sunday’s Gr1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac winner Albigna, and German 1000 Guineas winner Main Edition. Hasili’s influence this year, however, has not been restricted to
her sons and grandsons –she is also granddam of group winner Obligate (Frankel) and third dam of fellow group winner Sangarius (Kingman) in 2019, while Hasili’s highclass grandson Mirage Dancer (Frankel) was recently sent to further his career in Australia this year. A stakes winning daughter of dual Derby winner, and underrated sire Kahyasi, Hasili was produced by High Line mare Kerali, herself a daughter of champion, and Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Sookera (Roberto). (Hasili’s own dam Kerali also continues to be a major factor in pedigrees, with that High Line daughter the third dam of unbeaten Gr1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile winner Quadrilateral (Frankel) –a close relative of the Frankel sired Gr2 winner Obligate and a leading classic contender for 2020.) Hasili’s potency as a broodmare can be also be viewed in the fact that even her uplaced son Raise The Flag (Sadler’s Wells) has been responsible for black type winners, with the New Zealand based sire’s seven black type winners, at the time of writing, including Broadside (Gr3 Newcastle Gold Cup) and Etah James (Gr3 Lord Reims Stakes).
Gr1 winner by 3 x Australian Champion Sire
His luck must surely change soon. A former Dennis Bosch-trained gelding, Cue The Music won his first three starts, including the Gr3 Godolphin Barb Stakes over 1100m at Scottsville and he then only just failed to hold on when runner -up in the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville. A half-brother to Equus champion Val De Ra (Var), Cue The Music was purchased for R1,6 million off the 2017 Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale. He was bred by Avontuur from their international stakes producing sire Oratorio (Danehill) out of the prolific winner producing Minelli (Elliodor). Oratorio is currently third on the SA National Sires log behind Silvano and barn-mate, Var.

Durbanville 9 October The distance of 1400m took the lion’s share of the races at the country course on Wednesday and in what proved to be the fastest of the three we saw a smart performance from the full brother to Bold Respect SUPER SILVANO. Now a winner of two from seven, Brett Crawford’s charge raced in midfield for most of the journey. He quickened well at the top of the straight and under a well-judged ride from Pierre Orffer he won going away by three quarters. The stable of Brett Crawford (3 winners on the day) were again on the mark in the faster of the two 2000m races when KHOPESH ran out a very easy winner. Always handy, the Jackson gelding took up the running 300m out and cruised clear in the closing stages of the race to score by seven and a quarter. Another to win with authority on this card was the highly regarded RIO QUERARI when landing the MR81 Handicap over 1250m. Sent off a well-supported favourite at 17/10, Justin Snaith’s 3yo raced fifth coming off the bend. He put his head in front shortly after passing the 300m marker and drew clear easily below the distance to score by three and a quarter. TITBITS Now a winner of two from four, LARENTINA showed a very nice turn of foot in the latter stages when getting up late to win the smarter than average MR78 Handicap over 1400m.

Vaal 10 October The girl’s division was the faster of the two 1000m events that got proceedings underway on Thursday and here we saw a very comfortable victory for the deposed favourite ALLYOUNEEDISLOVE. Allowed to ease right out to 9/2 from 3/1 as solid support came for the Sean Tarry trained newcomer LEADING FAST (6/1 into 26/10 – never a threat), the daughter of Captain Of All led throughout. She was always clear and won without any anxious moments by two and a half. Money also came in buckets for the Sean Tarry trained IN THE DANCE in the progress plate over 1200m and this time the stable were on the mark. Absolutely thrown in at the weights, the Gimmethegreenlight filly was soon positioned close to the speed. She got the better of the front running SEEMYVISION 150m out and with the rest well beaten she won going away by three quarters. A pinnacle stakes over 2400m topped the bill and in what not surprisingly proved to be the faster of the races over the distance, the ultra-consistent DAWN ASSAULT took his tally of wins into double figures. Sent off third in the betting market at 4/1, St John Gray’s charge was always handy. He was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 200m marker and again comfortably accounted for the horse he beat last time out, DROMEDARIS. TITBITS
Fairview 11 October
The 33/1 shot TOUGH CHOICE had the rest four lengths adrift when running on from the rear to finish second in the MR76 Handicap over 2400m. Backed into second favourite, the Lucky Houdalakis trained newcomer MARYGOLD only had to be ridden with hands and heels when beating her twelve rivals in the maiden plate for 3yo’s over 1450m going away.
They raced on the poly track on Friday where the faster of the two 1200m events was the MR84 Handicap won by the former Gauteng campaigner ALPINE GLACIER. Having his first start here since relocating to the province Alan Greeff ’s charge raced fourth of the six early on. He quickened well in the short home straight and won nicely by a half from the fancied DI ME. The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1300m where the faster of the two was the MR78 Handicap won by OPEN FIRE. Not the quickest into stride when the gates opened, the 5/1 shot was positioned towards the rear during the early part of the race. He made his move rounding the turn and was already at the front going through the 400m. He kept on strongly from there onwards and got the verdict by a half over the always handy KINGSMAN.
Soqrat Ready For Battle Turffontein 12 October A pinnacle stakes over 1600m topped the bill on the inner track on Saturday and in what proved to be the fastest of the four races over the distance the best weighted runner in the field SOQRAT did the business. Making his seasonal debut here, MIKE De Kock’s charge was soon positioned close to the speed. He only had to be pushed out after taking up the running 200m from home and won well by a length from his running on stable companion LIKE A PANTHER. The runner up was having his first outing since December ’18 and finished very well. Three of the nine races were run over 1200m and in the quickest of these, a progress plate, we saw a gutsy performance from the lightly raced DONDERWEER. Now a winner of two from three, Paul Matchett’s charge was soon two lengths clear. Last season’s Gr2 Golden Slipper winner COCKNEY PRIDE challenged strongly 200m out and may even have led briefly. The Soft Falling Rain gelding found extra below the distance though and
went on to win well by three quarters. One to look out for next time from this race is DUBLIN QUAYS. In the rear coming off the strip, Mike De Kock’s charge was finishing best of all and did well to get within a length and a quarter of Donderweer. The stable of Paul Matchett were also on the mark in the faster of the two 1450m events, a MR72 apprentice handicap, when HERTOG registered his second career victory. Nibbled at on course into 9/1 from 14’s, the Duke Of Marmalade gelding broke well and raced fifth early on. He put his head in front shortly after passing the 200m marker and kept on strongly below the distance to beat the running on CATEGORY FOUR (came from the rear) by just under a half. TITBITS Now a winner of three from four, the Mike De Kock trained QUEEN SUPREME won the MR100 Handicap with authority by two. She’s behind at weight for age and can still improve plenty.
Patience Rewarded Durbanville 12 October The bill topping pinnacle stakes was by far the fastest of the four 1250m events at the country course on Saturday and here we saw a smart performance from the lightly raced 4yo AGENT OF FORTUNE. The speedy BWANA made the running and coming off the bend he was easily four lengths clear. Nicely positioned in second though Vaughan Marshall’s charge quickened well at the business end of the race, and won going away by a length and a half after striking the front 100m from home. Another to win very well on this card was KILINDINI in the faster of the two 1400m maiden events. In what was priced up as a boat race, his main rival PINKERTON got first run and struck the front 300m out. Kilindini tracked him throughout though, and with the remainder left trailing in their wake he went past Justin Snaith’s charge with authority 120m out to score going away by a length and three quarters. The two remaining races were both MR78 Handicaps over 1800m and in the faster of these, the girls’ affair, DANCING SALLY recorded her third career victory. On leaving the stalls it was the supported LUNAR TUNES who elected to make the running and coming off the bend she was five lengths clear. The chasing pack steadily wore her down in the straight though, and under a welljudged ride from Richard Fourie the daughter of Twice Over got up close home. TITBITS Now a winner of three from six, the progressive 3yo PRETTY YOUNG THING won the conditions plate over 1250m with authority by a length and three quarters.
The Bold Silvano filly WIND FINDER was the best bet on the card for most and she didn’t let down her supporters. Narrowly beaten by a fair local sort in BERNARDO in her only previous racecourse appearance, the 12/10 favourite was soon at the head of affairs. She was always a couple clear and with some in hand won very cosily by two and a half. TITBITS Having his first outing since relocating to the Eastern Cape, the heavily supported Toreador gelding ARABIAN SNIPER was racing over a trip probably too short in the opening maiden plate over 1000m. He had many lengths to find coming off the bend and finishing best of all he did very well indeed to get within 2,75 lengths of the winner.
