Marchingontogether defends his title on Sunday

UMTHOMBOTHI STAKES at Hollywoodbets Scottsville this Sunday

T

Hollywoodbets Scottsville is the lead venue on the local weekend racing programme with the only feature carded countrywide. The R120 000 UmThombothi Stakes is an all-horses conditions race contested over the Capital City track’s 1950m on Sunday and hosts a competitive mixed bag line-up.

he statistical guru’s may be pondering the fact that the corresponding meeting last year was washed out and then held in blazing sunshine at the same track four days later. But positive thoughts rule with the long-term weather forecast suggesting temperatures in the high 30’s and some cloud cover. So we are not even going to contemplate delays or switches. Of more interest is that last year’s smart winner Marchingontogether – together with his runnerup stablemate Blackball - is back to defend his title under regular pilot Warren Kennedy. The son of Pathfork has probably not achieved the heights expected of him, although his programme shows - take the SA Derby and Charity Mile excursions - that a few people connected feel he is better than what he has shown. That said, he will need to up his game after four ordinary efforts – two with excuses, to be fair. He could easily find his feet with some luck from the pole position gate, so include him in a race where the pace could play into his hands. His year older stable companion Blackball has shown better recent form but carries 3kgs more than he did in this race last year when chasing Marchinontogether home and beaten three quarters of a length. He finished 12 lengths ahead of the same horse in the Michael Roberts Handicap and even the 7kgs worse off now, is probably not enough to turn the tables. The Noble Tune grey White Lightning is the first of the Paul Lafferty trio. He has the blinkers removed at his first run after gelding and returns from a short break of ten weeks. On his better earlier form he would have an undeniable chance of earning and was even rated as a classic prospect in the early days. Stablemate Our Coys seems to have lost form but should improve at his second run after a break. Dark Moon Rising has yet to recapture his form since going unplaced in the Gold Cup last term. At his best he would have a shout,

but pulled up lame after the Michael Roberts Handicap and looks to have his issues. The Hollywood Syndicate have been in prime form and their 4yo Seattle Force makes his KZN debut on Sunday. The son of Mambo In Seattle loves to race up with the gallop and ran a really smart race last time, when despite not being able to find the front early, he finished right on top of accomplished performers Hero’s Honour and Divine Odyssey. From the positive draw, he could make them gallop here. Ella’s World is the only filly in the race and looks to have it all to do. Paths Of Victory has drawn wide. but is a fair sort who could assert his authority. But he likes to go up there and the fight up front could end up playng into the hands of the wait-and-see brigade. Christmas Handicap winner The Dazzler has solid form and is always a consideration if things go his way. There should be little between him and Blackball. Gallant 7yo Wealthy didn’t enjoy the all-weather last time when defending his title in the Michael Roberts Handicap. He is at home at this track and is worth including in bigger permutations. Like Wealthy, the 7yo Silver Rose seems better on the turf and faded late behind G G’s Dynasty in the Michael Roberts Handicap last time. His duel out front with Seattle Force and others, should make for an interesting tactical sub plot. The two 3yo’s Twice Golden and Great Warrior run off a 51kg joint bottomweight. Twice Golden appears to enjoy Scottsville and followed up on his maiden win with a rattling good effort over 2400m in an MR 82 Handicap last time. If he is not run off his feet, he would have a place chance here. Suzette Viljoen’s Great Warrior only has his third start and comes in straight out of a Hollywoodbets Greyville polytrack score. He is difficult to assess. In a race where there seems to be some reasonable pace merchants ready to strut their stuff, we are siding with Marchingontogether and Seattle Force to fight it out, with quartet scope for Blackball and The Dazzler.

Cape Yearling Sale 2020

Exciting Boost For BSA Sale

H

With just over a fortnight to go to the 2020 renewal of the Cape Yearling Sale, interest amongst buyers is gaining momentum with the exciting prospect of finding a potential winner of the inaugural BSA Cape Yearling Sale Cup, scheduled to be run on the prestigious Cape Derby Day in February 2021.

eld under the auspices of Bloodstock South Africa, the genuine value-formoney regional sale will be conducted at the scenic Mistico Equestrian Centre outside of Paarl on Friday 28 February. The catalogue, comprising 181 yearlings hailing from some of South Africa’s top breeders, is a broadly diverse one of some depth. And the opportunity to find the equivalent of the likes of recent Gr3 Lebelo Sprint winner Mr Flood – a R50 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Sale – or one of the smart gelding’s fellow graded stakes winners of the ilk of Doosra, Elusive Heart, Final Judgement, Hack Green, Princess Peach, and Drakenstein Stud’s exciting young stallion Gold Standard, is no further than a bid away. The additional incentive of a linked sales race to be run for a minimum stake of R550 000 on the prestigious high-profile Cape Derby day in 2021 now raises the game for buyers. “The attraction of this sale’s historic record of generating stakes winners has now been enhanced by the added golden reward of a linked race for graduates. Hosting the race on a major Gr1 raceday in the height of the Cape Summer Of Champions provides a thrilling splash of glamour and excitement,” added Bloodstock SA’s Chris Haynes He recalled that in the modern era, the Cape Derby has produced Met and July winners, as well as Equus Champions. “It is an arena of champions and we are truly proud to be associated with Kenilworth Racing on a great day on the racing calendar,” added Haynes. He went on to remind buyers that graduates of the Cape Yearling Sale will also be in line to earn the R60 000 bonus payable by BSA to maiden winners of Juvenile races in South Africa. The catalogue is available in hard copy and online and can be viewed live at www. bsa.co.za. Don’t miss our Cape Yearling Sale preview in next weekend’s bumper Cape Derby edition – or find it online at www.sportingpost.co.za

Coronavirus Hits Munger HK Racing Breaks The Ice After a first couple of weeks finding his way around the office, South African jockey Ryan Munger hit the target for the first time in Singapore with Pindus in the $50,000 Class 4 Division 2 race over 1000m last Friday evening.

T

he 24-year-old began his local stint on January 26, failing to salute from 17 rides in three meetings, but did come quite close with two minor placings and seven fourths. Unfortunately, the promising start was spoiled by a careless riding three-day suspension (on Broadway Success) he will serve after this past Sunday’s meeting, but at least, the 600odd race winner won’t have to wait it out before getting the monkey off his back. The conditions for an iceRyan Munger breaker didn’t actually look all that auspicious with Pindus posted out wide from his awkward alley, but the lightweight jockey had the Ricardo Le Grange-trained Exceed And Excel four-year-old travelling on the bridle throughout before clicking him up for the supreme effort at the top of the straight. Taking the widest path to the line, Pindus finished right over the top of his rivals in the last bounds to defeat favourite Man Of Mystery (Simon Kok Wei Hoong) by a neck. Sun Step (Ruan Maia) ran third another half-length away. The winning time was 59.96 secs for the 1000m on the Polytrack. With wife Kelsey on hand to lead him in, a delighted Munger could barely contain his joy at the winner’s circle. “The last few days, I’ve run in the money at a strike rate of around 50%. I was wondering when one of them would break the ice for me,” said Munger. “This horse had good form and was in a good place. I actually made him one of my better chances to get my first win, but he was also jumping from a tricky barrier. “When he saw daylight at the top of the straight, he attacked the line very well. He dug down deep and won a nice race. “Big thanks to Ricardo, I work for him in the morning and he helps me out a lot. We work as a team, and the good results are showing. “Singapore is a different set-up from back home, but it’s all very efficient and clean. I’m in a very good space now.” Le Grange was glad he could finally share the spoils with a jockey he had been longing to have on the team. The South African trainer had pledged support to Munger from the day he was granted a oneyear licence in November, but the work permit took an unusually long time to get approved – almost two months. “I can say a lot about this kid. He has a great work ethic and he ticks all the boxes,” said Le Grange. “He was stiff on California last week (beaten a nose), and I’m glad he won tonight. He was never affiliated to a big stable in South Africa, didn’t have a chance to ride top horses, but that win will give him the confidence now, and I’m sure all the guys will grab him now. “As for Pindus, he was a bit of a conundrum when he came. People kept bagging him for being a non-trier, but I think we got into his head, and he scored another good win tonight. “I’m really happy for the team, Paolo and Rudy Mendoza.” Despite the early stigma on Pindus, he has now silenced his critics with three wins and two placings from seven starts for prizemoney that has hit around the SG$80,000 mark for Paolo De Villa Mendoza. · Singapore Turf Club

Only 400 people will be allowed to attend this coming weekend’s dual Gr1 card at Sha Tin as the Jockey Club acquiesces to a government demand to further reduce crowds at Hong Kong race meetings.

ust trainers, jockeys, key personnel and horse owners with runners will be admitted on course for the next three meetings – on 12, 16 and 19 February – to help prevent any further spreading of the coronavirus. It means only two rooms were open at Happy Valley on Wednesday night and those who do turn up will be subjected to temperature screening while being advised to wear medical masks. There will be no cross-betting at the opposing track. Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges says the measures are necessary in the current environment and enforcing

them as requested is the only way to ensure racing continues. “We think that by having 400 people or less on track means there is minimal risk of spreading the virus,” Engelbrecht-Bresges said. “With 700 000 to 800 000 fans watching our races on TV, it helps keep people at home rather than out on the streets and therefore helps to contain the situation. “We really think it is important to keep racing and provide a source of entertainment in these circumstances. If we stop racing, it is likely we won’t be back for about three months.” These moves come after the Jockey Club has already closed all 101 of its

off-course betting branches and nine of its Telebet lines. Automated and online services are still running. Unsurprisingly, turnover continues to take huge hits, with Saturday’s Sha Tin meeting down HK$410 million (R800 million) on last year’s corresponding fixture to HK$1.166 billion (R2.26 billion). A partial lockout has been in place since the Lunar New Year fixture on 27 January and it continues to be tightened. There are two Gr1 races scheduled for Sunday’s card – the Hong Kong Gold Cup featuring Exultant while stars Beauty Generation and Beat The Clock will go head-to-head in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup. · South China Morning Post

Yeni Saga Nears End

T

Jockey Muzi Yeni, who was runner-up to Lyle Hewitson in the national championship title race last season, is currently serving a ninety day suspension for initimidation and interference related to an in-race incident involving Hewitson.

his occurred when Yeni took his hand off his left side rein and placed it on Hewitson’s arm in the second race at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 27 July 2019. A subsequent appeal failed and Yeni is due back in the saddle on 1 March 2020. The National Horseracing Authority has now confirmed that at an Inquiry held over the dates of Thursday, 15 August 2019, Thursday, 10 October 2019, and Friday, 31 January 2020, Yeni

was charged with various further rule contraventions. These were:-

Rule 72.1.26 In that Mr Yeni made comments during a post-race interview on Tellytrack, after the running of the 4th race run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday 31 July 2019, which might have had the effect of discrediting horseracing and which did or might have brought into disrepute the good name of the NHA. Jockey Yeni pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Board after considering the

Brand New Stipe Former jockey and longstanding assistant trainer Ricardo Sobotker has been appointed a Stipendiary Steward in the Eastern Cape. While the NHA have made no announcement of it, the 47 year old Sobotker’s, who is also popularly known as Ricky or Avo, name appears as an ordinary entry in the latest racing calendar. Sobotker took out his assistant trainers licence in 2002 and only ever worked for Joey Ramsden. They enjoyed great success with top horses, amongst others, the like Winter Solstice, Major Bluff, Bravura, Variety Club and King Of Pain. Ricardo enjoyed a solid grounding in the racing game.

One of the first trainers he rode for, after completing his apprenticeship, was Ramsden, who in 1990 was running Vaughan Marshall’s yard in Port Elizabeth. He then tried his luck in Cape Town but had no success so he returned to PE where he first rode for Dumas Coetzee and then ended his riding career with Gavin Smith. Ricardo, a born and bred Capetonian, decided to return to his home town where he kept in touch with Joey by riding work and helping out in the yard.

evidence found Mr Yeni not guilty of the charge.

Rule 72.1.43 In that on 1 August 2019, on a social media platform being Facebook, he posted a comment which could reasonably be construed to be offensive with respect to the NHA. Jockey Yeni pleaded not guilty to the charge but was found guilty of the charge. The Board after considering the record, and taking into account the arguments in aggravation and mitigation, ruled that Jockey Yeni be fined the sum of ten thousand rand (R10,000.00), of which five thousand rand (R5000) is suspended for a period of 12 months, provided that Jockey Yeni is not found guilty of a similar offence under this Rule during this period.

In between his time with Joey he worked for Des McLachlan and Glen Puller. Ramsden closed up shop last November and emigrated to Australia.

Because We Said So...

The NHA in KZN are focussed on antiquated rules rather than the more important issues at play. This was the general consensus from trainers spoken to by Short Heads after it was noted that the Stipes report of the racemeeting at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday contained an unprecedented over 50 verbal warnings issued to trainers for not saddling their runners in the front boxes at the parade ring. The trainers feel the rule is antiquated and bad for the horses – and thus for racing. Surely a half hour meeting between the parties could solve the impasse and aggravation?

BHA UPS RETIREE CONTROLS The British Horseracing Authority has announced changes to the way retired racehorses are registered in a drive to further improve the traceability of horses leaving the sport. The new system, which is integrated into the existing racing admin site, involves opening up the ability to register the new homes of newly retired racehorses to trainers as well as owners. It is designed to ensure that there is as much traceability as possible for horses who are permanently retired from racing.

Moore Magic

A record-breaking trailblazer in Hong Kong since gaining his licence in 1985, John Moore saddled his 1700th winner at Sha Tin on Saturday when Savvy Seven won. He is Hong Kong’s longest-serving and winning-most trainer, netting an all-time record prize money haul of HK$2.03 billion (R3.88 billion) since taking over from his legendary father George Moore. The seven-time champion trainer’s lengthy honour roll of winners includes training the last six Horse of the Year winners, and a hatful of Gr1 wins, including four overseas notably Sterling City’s victory in the Gr1 Dubai Golden Shaheen.

What A View! Treble Q Maine Chance Farms’ stallion Querari enjoyed a treble over the weekend, with his daughter Luna Wish winning the Breeders Guineas Plate on Friday, while Calvary and Enrapture both scored on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville. South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2yo’s in 2018-2019, Querari has had another good season, with his runners having already banked more than R5,3 million in stakes.

GOOD NAME The interestingly named Mandela Effect, a son of Turffontein (by Johannesburg), won the A$100 000 Listed Thomas Lyons at Hobart on Sunday. The 5yo gelding is out of the West Quest mare, Morell. The winner was an A$18,000 yearling at the 2016 Magic Millions Tasmania Sale.

Save The Date

The Cape Breeders Club have announced a ‘Save the Date’ for 6 March for the first of a series of relaxed field days that the Club will be hosting to discuss a variety of topics on breeding. The first topic will be deworming and yearling preparation. Food and drinks will be served. Venue: To be decided. Time: 14h30

Ascot Stud’s Galileo stallion Global View has made a flying start and produced his third winner from his first five runners when Fireview won for Yvette Bremner at Fairview last Friday afternoon. Bred by the Riyo Stud, the 2yo was third on debut. Fireview is out of the Sail From Seattle mare Spellfire, and was a R40 000 bargain buy from the 2019 Emperors Palace National 2yo Sale. Currently South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire, Global View was a high-class racehorse who won the Gr3 Generous Stakes at two and Gr2 American Turf Stakes the following year. Global View has 3 lots on offer at the upcoming Cape Yearling Sale.

Call – Then The Fall Those who relied on the commentary when trading in-play on Betfair were left counting the cost after the second at Morphettville on Saturday. Over A$7000 was traded at A$1.01 on Dexter You Devil after the 5yo gelding was incorrectly called as the horse sprinting to the lead at the 100m and subsequently the winner. It was actually Jester Halo, sporting similar red silks, who took out the M&J Chickens Handicap. Commentator Brett Davis had correctly identified the pair for much of the race before confusing the two at the 200m.

Devonne Govender

M

In a country boasting world-class jockeys and some great race commentators, it’s a reality that both disciplines slot perfectly into the sitting duck line of fire often targetted by horseracing’s diverse cognoscenti.

ike de Kock has already expressed his opinion of our peanut gallery professors. But let’s face it - the back of a horse and sitting behind the binoculars are just two very lonely places to be in this game. At the age of 31, Devonne Govender became South Africa’s newest racecaller at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday when he stepped up from the nursery experience of calling the low-key barrier trials to his first ‘big school’ professional race. It wasn’t exactly a ‘mission impossible’ type baptism of fire with just seven horses in the line up. But in-race tongue twisters like Wall Of Dubrovnik and Zave De Grace, and the climax of a short head finish between those two, kept the former harness racing jockey on his toes for the full 65 seconds of the maiden contest. The man with the calm demeanour, who loves reef fishing to unwind and relax, didn’t break into a cold sweat, but conceded there ‘were some nerves’ tempered by the innate confidence of being well prepared. “I had a wisdom tooth removed a few days before. So the timing was not ideal. But that was the least of my worries. The barrier trial calls had given me a good feel of things and I just pretended I was sitting at home and calling it from my couch, remembering of course that the world is listening. Overall, I would describe the dominant emotion of that wonderful moment as excitement and an immense sense of achievement,” he adds quietly. Like many promising youngsters in the ranks of the top heavy age demographic of the South African racing pyramid, Devonne says that Sunday’s milestone was another day just living his dream in a sport he is passionate about. While he has had his fair share of international travel, he still lives in Verulam, 27km north of Durban, where he grew up and went to school. In his mid teens he got the opportunity of a lifetime that was to fashion his future. His Dad, who is a Telecommunications Engineer, secured a contract in New Zealand. It was to be Devonne’s eye-opener and passport into the wonderful world of the sport of kings.

“I was sixteen years old and racing was in our faces 24/7. It was all over the media and, unlike South Africa, New Zealand has an abundance of racetracks all over the country. In fact they have 52 racecourses, from Ascot Park at Invercargill in the South to Ruakaka at Whangarei in the North. That was when I decided I had to get involved in this great game – and harness racing became a particular favourite for me.” But all good things come to an end, and the finalisation of his Dad’s contract saw Devonne back on Mother Earth – Verulam, to be precise – where he, somewhat reluctantly it seems, commenced his first year IT studies at Varsity College in Durban. “My parents were always sensibly intent on me getting a qualification. But I had this yearning to get into racing and packed up the timetable and my text books and joined the SA Jockey Academy. This was frowned upon by my folks, but they respected my wishes and knew it was what I wanted.” Devonne spent a year at Summerveld, and under the tutorship of Johan Nilsson and Dean Latimer working with the Summerveld based harness horses. Too tall to be a flat jockey, he drove in 4 of the KZN Premier’s First Harness Challenge series of races. It was while completing his apprenticeship with Harness Racing South Africa, in conjunction with the South African Jockey Academy, that he was offered an opportunity with Racing & Wagering Western Australia which consisted of one year’s training to obtain his international racing licence - which he still holds. “What a thrilling experience! During this I time was based at Byford Harness Racing Complex, a premier Harness training facility in Western Australia. I was hosted by a number of licensed trainers with whom I worked closely. Trevor Warwick, multiple champion trainer/ driver in Oz and America, was my mentor and Driving Master. When I was initially licensed as a Cadet Driver I was allowed to drive in trial races, where I did very well. Following the requisite number of approved trial drives, I was awarded a professional licence, which enabled me to drive in races, excluding Friday night meetings at Metropolitan tracks.”

Devonne also spent approximately six months with Aldo Cortopassi Pacing Stables. During this time he performed the duties of a stable hand and track work driver and was involved in all aspects of general stable duties, including stable management and daily routines. “I learnt so much- from feeding up in the morning, jogging horses, exercising horses on the horse-walker, grooming, washing horses, preparing them for races as well as maintenance of the stable area, gear etc. I then spent four months at Noel Keily’s Pacing Stables. Mr Keily, who had 35 horses, specialises in training and breaking-in of younger horses - yearlings and 2 year olds. Some of my duties included track work driving, assisting with the breaking in, exercising of young horses for the first time on a horse walker, preparing horses for races, gearing and ungearing of horses at races. My 12 months training with RWWA was completed and I returned to South Africa in September 2013, with a whole world of understanding, knowledge and basic experience of these wonderful animals – plus that teenage ambition nurtured in New Zealand,” he recollects proudly. Veteran racing journalist Andrew Harrison, a fairly talented fisherman himself when he can break away from his keyboard, runs a tight ship at Gold Circle Publishing at Greyville where Devonne is based. “It’s a great environment. A happy team and it’s racing 24/7. So I love work and there’s no clockwatching or big rush at 4pm,” laughs Devonne. He explains that he does editing, writing reviews for race meetings, as well as proofreading

content for online, newspaper and race card/magazine publications. “I play a diverse role in the media department as Sub-Editor, GTV Presenter, and I also get my hands involved in the design side of things - and now commentating! I also have some fun muting the tv and doing some race calls for the boys in the office. Some good practice in front of a critical audience!” And does he punt? “Only the odd bet, now and again,” he says. For his quiet external demeanour, Devonne is empowered with a six-pack of confidence and self-belief as a result of taking every ounce of his experience and training seriously. From sweeping the stable yard at 4am on icy mornings, he is now in a position of responsibility behind the binoculars at one of South Africa’s historic racecourses. “I have to pinch myself still, but I believe I have what it takes. My wide scale exposure to racing locally and internationally in both the practical and administrative side has given me a wealth of knowledge as I continue to learn. In this game learning never stops. I have been told by many trainers that I’ve worked for that I have the ‘Master’s Eye’ when it comes to racing. Other professionals have given my voice and elocution the thumbs up. So now it’s up to me to build on that foundation,” he adds. He says that he has had help and support along the way from many different people and the list is too long to mention, adding that Gold Circle’s Graeme Hawkins, one of our greatest racecallers, is his mentor. “Terry Spargo is my role model. You would know he is famous for calling in Meydan and he’s now back in his home country calling in Australia. I think he is absolutely brilliant on the world stage. Then when it comes to a favourite, I’d have to say Australian, Chris Barsby.” We asked Devonne the standard gloomy question on SA racing’s future: “In this current time everyone knows it’s been difficult. But we have to make every effort to preserve, sustain, regulate and promote this beautiful sport that we all love so much to ensure it continues to thrive into the future.”

De Kock Slams Dubai History Phantoms For Uruguay

O

Multiple champion trainer Mike de Kock has had his fill of keyboard phantoms who almost demand transparency and then sling off behind the mask of a pseudonym.

Belle Fever, unbeaten in four starts in her native Uruguay, made some history at Meydan last Thursday night when she became the first Uruguayan-bred to win in Dubai. Dubai World Cup winner Invasor was originally trained in Uruguay, but he was bred in Argentina.

ne of the most insightful mottos in my life is, ‘Suspicion haunts the guilty’. My message to the consistently bitter, obstructive commentators, who often suggest skulduggery in the racing industry is, ‘If racing is so bad, why are you still around? Why don’t you do us all a favour and get out?’” Speaking on his website, www.mikedekockracing. com, De Kock referred to negativity among “faceless internet trolls”, who complain about a lack of transparency and then criticize those who reveal stable information and offer reasons for disappointing runs. He said: “People are quick to sling off, but they don’t really have the facts. I challenge anybody to come from Cape Town to Johannesburg and to do what we do coming the other way. Never mind acclimatisation, it works both ways. “Having said all of this, I’m not sure we owe anyone an explanation about runners running below par. Whatever gets into the press in the

interest of transparency seems to get twisted, especially on racing forums. “We’ve tried to inform the racing public with transparent comments in everyone’s interest, but we have to suffer for that at the hands of internet trolls, many of whom have little understanding of the industry and feel it’s their right to sling off at trainers, jockeys, horses and administrators whilst hiding behind pseudonyms. “We’re suffering abuse for our transparency. It’s often the same individuals slinging off, week after week. They contribute no value whatsoever. There are several trainers who are re-considering their stance on transparency. We’ve tried to help the punters and racing fans, those who really love racing, but all we get back in return is ridicule. Why should we continue? “This is not the racing media’s fault, they have reported our words, but there are a few negative people out there who misconstrue or purposefully misrepresent our comments and it’s doing the industry no good.”

Derby Day Is Next

Puller & Kennedy Lead

Racing Diaries

One of the great innovations in South African horseracing in 2019, the inaugural R750 000 Hollywoodbets Sizzling Summer Challenge is set to go all the way to the wire. The last meeting is at Holywoodbets Greyville on Friday 28 February.

May The Force Be With You

The Cape Summer Season will reach a climax on 22 February at Kenilworth when a reshuffled feature day sees the sun setting on a terrific three months of entertaining racing down South. THE REVISED programme – sensible or not - heralds another ‘mega day’ of racing just three weeks after the Sun Met. There has been plenty of debate as to the wisdom of the changes made - the Gr1 ARF Commemorative Cape Derby was moved off Sun Met day, supposedly allowing the top 3yo’s to run in both the Met and the classic. None of the 15 Derby entries were even Sun Met prospects. And what about the move to run the colts’ and fillies’ nurseries so early in the season? Bringing the two races forward to earlier in the year was apparently done in the hope of attracting bigger fields, as well as creating an additional opportunity for youngsters who did not win the Juvenile Stakes on Met Day. But at close of first entries on Monday morning, only thirteen entries were received for the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery. And due to insufficient entries, the Gr3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery was held over to Tuesday, when 13 entries were received – four of which were fillies. The fairer sex do not have an overwhelming record in the race with the Drakenstein Stud owned and bred Clouds Unfold winning the juvenile male race in 2018 – the first filly in a decade to clinch top honours. The Derby and Gr2 Diadem fields will be declared on Thursday 13 February.

A treble from Anton Marcus at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday narrowed the gap at the top of the Hollywoodbets Sizzling Summer Challenge jockey’s log to 63 points. Warren Kennedy didn’t have a winner on the day but still maintained his lead at the top of the leaderboard with multiple places. The trainers' log saw Hollywoodbetssponsored trainer Garth Puller also maintain his lead with multiple places on the day. Trainer Paul Lafferty is another that didn’t have a winner on the day and is 53.5 points behind Puller. The consistent Bint El Malak is the leader on the horses log and extended her lead to 15 points after her 6th place finish in the fourth race on Sunday. The next KZN meeting is carded for Hollywodbets Greyville on Wednesday. The Hollywoodbets Sizzling Summer Challenge, which awards points for every runner in every race, got underway on 1 December 2019. A prize pot of R250,000 will be awarded to each of the categories, totalling R750,000 in the competition. The prize money will be broken down for the top 6 positions, with R100k going to 1st place, R50k to 2nd place, R40k to 3rd place, R30k to 4th place, R20k to 5th place, and R10k to 6th place.

elle Fever contested the $100,000 Meydan Classic Trial over 1400m, her first attempt beyond 1000m, and she ran on strongly under a well-timed ride from jockey Dane O’Neill to win by a neck, but was going away in the last few stride and looks progressive.

A three-year-old filly by Texas Fever, Belle Fever joined Mike de Kock’s barn in Dubai last year, following a trip via Jane Chapple-Hyam’s yard at Newmarket, where she had surgery and was looked after in recovery. Mike commented: “This was an amazing win for Uruguay, well done to owners Jorge Wagner and Victor Azambullu. They took a gamble, had the courage to send her here when they knew how arduous the trip would be and seeing that they could’ve kept her in Uruguay where she was beating everything. “This reminded us of days gone by when we visited South America often and came back with horses that were competitive in Dubai. “Belle Fever was courageou after she played up a bit at the start, she’s a nice filly and was well prepared by our Dubai team of Declan Cronin, Shorty Feni and Thomas Ncume.”

Racing returns to the KZN capital on Sunday for an eight-race programme. With the Hollywoodbets Sizzling Summer Challenge drawing to a close, it is a meeting that should not be missed. he UmThombothi Stakes is the non black-type feature race of the day and it will see the Hollywood Syndicate's talented frontrunner Seattle Force make his provincial debut.

The gutsy gelding was unlucky when odds-on in a small but top quality field at Turffontein last time when finishing fourth. He didn’t manage to get to the lead there and that arguably cost him. Looking at the field on Sunday, all things should be in the 4 year old's favour as he is drawn well and should be able to get to the front much easier as there does not appear to be much pace in the race. And with the manner in which he

normally kicks away, this son of Mambo in Seattle should be the one they all have to beat in the run down to the line. With racing at the big ‘T’ abandoned last Saturday all the focus was on Kenilworth and our in-house tipsters performed exceptionally well. PeTeBe tipped the place accumulator which paid R264.90. He got it 12 times! And Jimmy The Rich tipped the first four winners on the card. The advice from the tipsters this week is to follow their selections closely as they are on a good run of form. This weekend promises to be another intriguing one. Make sure you get your Winning Form to keep you in the know!

SPORTING POST • FRIDAY 14th - SUNDAY 16th FEBRUARY 2020

Highly Competitive Weekend with Steve Furnish

Hollywoodbets Greyville 2 February Five of the nine races on the poly track on Sunday were staged over 1400m and in the fastest of these, a pinnacle stakes, the Visionaire gelding CALIENTE registered his fourth career victory. Freely available at 8/1 on the off, Dennis Drier’s charge was always handy. He was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 200m marker and kept on strongly late to beat the staying on pacemaker HIGH VOLTAGE by a length. The only other distance to stage more than one race on the card was 1600m. The MR89 affair was not surprisingly the faster of the two handicaps and here victory went to CAESURA. Always handy, the son of Oratorio ran on strongly in the short home straight and got up late to beat BLACKBURN ROC by a length. In terms of distance, the easiest victory on the card was registered by RALPH THE RASCAL when getting off the mark in the maiden plate over 1400m. Runner up when finishing strongly from midfield in his only previous racecourse appearance, Alyson Wright’s charge raced in the rear early on. Once given rein though he quickened in good style and despite having to switch 350m from home, he won going away by three and a half. TITBITS

Not So Elusive

Promising Start

Vaal 4 February Fifty percent of the races on the Vaal’s classic track on Tuesday were run over 1200m with the fastest of the four being the graduation plate won by the Elusive Fort gelding BENJI. Soon positioned close to the speed, Paul Peter’s charge took up the running 400m out and kept on strongly late to beat the running on SMOKE by 0,3 lengths. The bill topping MR96 Handicap was by far the faster of the two 1600m races on the card and here victory went to the 3yo SECRET DREAM. Also sired by Elusive Fort, Lucky Houdalakis’ charge led throughout. She was a length and a half clear going through the 400m and although the always handy AURELIA COTTA chased hard in the closing stages of the race, she couldn’t get closer than 0,4 lengths at the wire. At the other end of the scale the biggest winning margin on the card was just the 2,5 lengths recorded by UNDISCLOSED when getting off the mark in the opening maiden plate over 1200m. Sent off a warm favourite at 2/1, St John Gray’s charge also made all. He was always in command and won comfortably from the unfancied BARISTA. TITBITS

Hollywoodbets Scottsville 5 February

Now a winner of two from five the aptly named SUPREME WIN came from the rear when getting up late to land the MR76 Handicap over 1200m.

Off a penetrometer reading of 25 the going was originally posted as Good to Soft in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday. However, after the running of race one it was changed to Good, and the winning times during the afternoon did confirm this. A maiden juvenile plate over 1000m got proceedings underway and here followers of the money got off to a nice start when the Lezeanne Forbes trained newcomer SOFIA ERIN did the business. Backed throughout the morning into 2/1 from 13/2, this well regarded daughter of Vercingetorix broke well and was already at the head of affairs going through the 600m. She ran on strongly from there onwards and with the rest well beaten she won well by a length and a half from the always handy KINSKEY’S TUNE. Also supported in this race was another newcomer NIRVANA GIRL. She was staying on nicely at the finish after racing in midfield.

Vaal 6 February Racing returned to the classic track on Thursday where the last race had to be abandoned due to a severe electrical storm. Three of the seven races that did take place were run over 1000m and in the fastest of these, a MR80 Handicap, STARFLASH landed a gamble. Backed throughout the day into 11/2 from 16/1, Barend Botes’ charge raced in midfield during the early part of the race. He produced a nice turn of foot below the distance and in what proved to be a real thriller he got up in the very last stride. They also ran three races over 1450m and quickest home here was the sparingly raced RIVONIA BOULEVARD in the MR88 Handicap. Having only his second outing following a 14 month layoff, Sean Tarry’s charge was soon up handy. He ran on strongly at the business end of the race and with the rest comfortably beaten he got the better of the hard knocking 8yo TOKYO DRIFT by a neck. The one remaining race was a graduation plate over 2000m and here a bit of an upset was to be had when the odds on favourite WESTERN FORT got rolled. The best bet on the card for many, Paul Peter’s charge adopted a change of tactics here and made the running. He rallied gamely after being headed by the Mambo In Seattle filly DIORAMA 300m out, and in what proved to be a real thriller he went down by a quarter. TITBITS Freely available at 16/1 on the off, the St John Gray trained newcomer PERSICA ran on well from the rear when a length and a quarter runner up to the heavily supported newcomer HERSTEL in the opening work rider’s maiden plate over 1000m.

Fairview 7 February This meeting was originally scheduled to take place on the turf. A maiden juvenile plate over 1000m was first up on the poly track on Friday and here we saw a smart performance from the Yvette Bremner trained FIREVIEW. Nibbled at on course to go off second favourite at 5/2, the son of Global View led throughout. He only had to be pushed out in the short home straight and cruised in by three. Another to win with authority on this card was the newcomer SCENTED GARDEN in the maiden plate for the girls over 1200m. Soon up handy, Alan Greeff ’s charge was ridden to lead approaching the 300m marker and drew clear easily in the closing stages of the race to score by five and three quarters. Three of the afternoon’s eight races were staged over 1300m and in the fastest of these, the MR92 Handicap, the What A Winter

mare FOREHAND gained her first win since relocating to the province. Easy to back at 8/1 on the off Alan Greeff ’s charge led throughout. She kept on determinedly over the final 400m and just held on from her gaining stable companion CHAKRI (the favourite) by a half. TITBITS One of four winners on the card for trainer Alan Greeff, LUNA WISH ran on well from the backend of midfield when getting up late to win the Breeders Guineas Plate for 3yo fillies over 1400m.

The only other race over 1000m was a MR78 Handicap and in a much faster time than that of Sofia Erin, the course and distance specialist BLAZE OF SILK made it four from twelve over the trip. Soon up handy, Corinne Bestel’s charge was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m pole and comfortably accounted for the pacemaker LA BELLA by just over a length. Two maiden plates over 1500m brought the meeting to a close and in the faster of these BLACK FOX opened his account. Drawn widest of the twelve that went to post, the son of Black Minnaloushe raced in the rear early on. Once in the home straight though he ran on best of all, and in a classic finish he got up late to deny the supported KING JULIAN. TITBITS The uneasy favourite CAPTAINS FORT ran on well from midfield when winning the maiden plate over 1200m very easily by four and a quarter.

SPORTING POST • FriDAY 14th - SUNDAY 16th FEBRUARY 2020 13

Regal River Runs Deep! The dominance of the deceased Japanese superstar, Deep Impact (Sunday Silence), was well and truly felt on the 2019 Japanese Sires List.

N

ot only was Deep Impact Champion Sire in Japan for an eighth consecutive time, but the former Japan Triple Crown winner was Japan’s Leading Sire of 2Yos for 2019, and also topped the country’s Leading Sire of 3Yos List.

Before The Storm Deep Impact had 89 individual 3yo winners (11 stakes winners among them) last year, with his star representatives headed by Gr1 Kikuka Sho (St Leger) first and second World Premiere and Satono Lux, Tokyo Yushun (Derby) hero, Roger Barows, Oka Sho (1000 Guineas) winner, Gran Alegria, and Yushun Himba (Oaks) winner, Loves Only You. The latter is out of a Storm Cat mare, with Storm Cat now broodmare sire of no fewer than eight of Deep Impact’s Gr1 winners –he is also found in the pedigree of the sire’s highclass gallopers Beauty Parlour and Contrail.) His two-year-olds earned a whopping ¥703,360,000 in 2019, with Deep Impact’s 46 individual juvenile winners in 2019 headed by Gr1 Hopeful Stakes winner, Contrail. Deep Impact’s success last year was by no means restricted to Japan, with his son, Glory Vase, capturing the Gr1 Longines Hong Kong Vase, another son, Fierce Impact, lifting two Gr1 races in Australia, 2yo fillies Fancy Blue and Savarin, winning the Staffordstown Stud Stakes and Gr3 Prix d’Aumale respectively, and his 3yo, Love So Deep, landing the Listed British Stallions Studs EBF Chalice Stakes at Newmarket. The former Japan Cup winner also made his mark on the 2019 Japanese Leading First Crop Sires List for 2019, with Deep Impact’s Tokyo Yushun winner, Kizuna (out of Storm Cat’s daughter Catequil) the Leading First Crop Sire of 2019, with Kizuna also finishing second to his own sire on the 2019 Leading Japan 2YO Sires List. Deep Impact was also responsible for Real Impact and World Ace, who were third and fifth respectively on last year’s Leading First Crop Sires’ list, and the champion had no fewer than five sons in the top twelve. Kizuna, whose dam is a half-sister

to the dam of Japanese champions, Biwa Hayahide and Narita Brian, had 27 first crop 2yo winners and two stakes winners last season, and he looks a bright prospect for his sire going forward.

Well Connected Deep Impact also made his presence felt on Japan’s Leading Second Crop Sires list for 2019, with his sons, Danon Ballade and Tosen Ra, finishing seventh and eighth respectively on that list. Incidentally, both Danon Ballade and Tosen Ra have connections to either current or past South African stallions, with Danon Ballade hailing from the same family as former SA sire, Rakeen, (Northern Dancer), and Tosen Ra a half-brother to the Wilgerbosdrift based, Flower Alley (Distorted Humor.) Deep Impact’s dominance in Japan is well viewed in terms of comparison to some of the world’s other leading stallions. His own record of eight consecutive sires titles lags not far behind Galileo (11 times champion sire in GB/Ireland, with ten consecutive titles), and is well clear of the likes of modern day US champion sires, A.P. Indy, Deputy Minister, Giant’s Causeway, Kitten’s Joy, Smart Strike, Storm Cat, and Tapit. The last horse to dominate the North American Sires List as completely as Deep Impact was the legendary Bold Ruler (Nasrullah), who was champion sire eight times from 1963-1973. With an excellent crop of two-year-olds to his name, Deep Impact could well dominate this year’s sire standings in Japan once again. Some outstanding racemares have already foaled to Deep Impact this year, suggesting his legacy is set to continue for years to come. His classic winning sons, Saxon Warrior and Study Of Man, are now standing at stud in Ireland, shuttling to Australia and Britain.

So Close! Deep Impact went close to registering another major victory, when his son, Fierce Impact, (previously victorious in both the Gr1 Kennedy Cantala and Gr1 Toorak Handicap) ran a close second in Saturday’s Gr1 Neds C.F. Orr Stakes at Caulfield.

Danon Platina - only son of Deep Impact at stud in SA Fierce Impact joins the likes of Real Impact and Tosen Stardom as Australian Gr1 winners sired by Deep Impact. While Deep Impact’s dominance of Japan is impressive, he has a long way to go to match his own sire, Sunday Silence, whose remarkable record includes Japan’s Leading Broodmare Sire for 2019 - Sunday Silence mares produced the earners of a staggering ¥4,400,736,500. Sunday Silence is the male line ancestor of no fewer than ten of

the top 20 on the 2019 Japanese General Sires List. Sunday Silence and his sons have headed the Japanese General Sires List a stunning 23 times in the past 25 years, a truly remarkable achievement for a stallion rejected by North American breeders. North America’s Horse Of The Year in 1989, Sunday Silence (now deceased) topped the Japanese Sires List no fewer than 13 times in a row, and, Deep Impact aside, is also the sire of Japan champion sires,

Agnes Tachyon, and Manhattan Cafe. A truly exceptional sire and broodmare sire, Sunday Silence’s dominance of Japan’s racing industry is quite remarkable, and it looks set to continue for decades to come. Deep Impact’s only son at stud in South Africa is the Mauritzfontein based G1 Asahi Hai Futurity winner, Danon Platina, who is bred on the same Deep Impact/Unbridled’s Song cross as 2019’s star two-year-old Contrail.

Another Avontuur Queen?

S

Avontuur’s evergreen sire Var looks to have another really smart sort to his credit in the form of the exciting Kenilworth Fillies Nursery entry, Delta Queen.

he made an eye catching debut in the Khaya Stables silks at Kenilworth on Saturday, when making all to score over 1100m. Trained by Dean Kannemeyer, Delta Queen had shown plenty at home and was backed down to start a 17-10 tote favourite. Quickly into stride, under Keagan De Melo, the Amm and Avontuur bred filly was always up

with the pace, and when De Melo asked the question, Delta Queen kicked clear before going on to score a decisive and impressive three and a half length debut win. Delta Queen is out of Jet Master star River Jetez, a full-sister to Triple Horse Of The Year Pocket Power, whose victories included both the 2010 Gr1 J&B Met and Dubai’s Balanchine Stakes. A full-sister to Gr3 Lebelo Sprint winner Rivarine, Delta Queen - bred

on the same cross as recent G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Vardy and the exciting Miracle Flight - was a R2 million buy from the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. The filly is the third juvenile winner (from 4 runners thus far) for Var, South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2Yos in both 2016-2017 and 2017-2018, this season. Var is also sire of the promising two-year-old Miracle Flight an impressive winner of each of first three starts. The sire of more than 20 G1 horses, Var has three lots on the upcoming Cape Yearling Sale.
