Justin Snaith travels up the coast with his promising Gimmethegreenlight filly Favorita to take on unbeaten local star Delicasea in the R150 000 Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery at Fairview on Friday.
he visitors have a fair record in the 2yo fairer sex feature in recent years, Snaith winning it in 2016 with The Merry Widow and in 2012 with The Black Rose. They travel with recent Cape Fillies Nursery fourth-placer Favorita, who ran on steadily – and she may
not have enjoyed the conditions - for a 2,25 length fourth behind Delta Queen in the Kenilworth feature on Derby day. She won well beating stablemate Thumbs Up at the second time of asking. With two wins from two starts, Global View’s smart daughter Delicasea steps up 200m and looks to carry the major hometown hope
of victory. It is interesting that Greg Cheyne has opted to ride another of the Greeff quartet. We tried calling both Messrs Greeff and Cheyne without success before going to print to get some clarity on the riding arrangements. First of the Gavin Smith trio, Sugar Gum produced two good second efforts – including a close call to Eternal Hope – before winning well at her third start. A very smart debut winner, Eternal Hope travelled to the Cape on Sun Met day and was beaten 9,55 lengths by Erik The Red. This is her first run back and it is interesting to note – as already mentioned - that Greeff ’s first
choice jockey Greg Cheyne rides her ‘in preference’ to the unbeaten Delicasea. A good maiden winner at her second start, Herrin is another well held by Delicasea on her last start when beaten 1,35 lengths. The extra 200m should suit her. Crusade daughter Sloane steps up 200m after running on for second at her first three starts over shorter. While she should not beat Delicasea, she could be the joker in the pack and must go into quartets. Third of the Gavin Smith trio, and second of the Global View offspring in the line-up, Storyland stormed home by 4,25 lengths on her well supported course-and-distance debut. Warren
Kennedy makes a rare visit to PE and is in hot form. Montana Turner’s Sweet Spring has been placed twice in three starts but is well held by Storyland. Flying The Flag filly Cecca has been slow away at both her runs and is well held by her stablemate, Delicasea. The once-raced maiden Lets Rock was beaten 8 lengths by Storyland on her course-and-distance debut and would need to improve many lengths to feature here. Delicasea and Favorita are the standouts. Storyland is the only course-and-distance winner in the field. Eternal Hope and Storyland look next best.

The tempo has been raised a few notches in KZN. The Snaith runners in Sunday’s Hollywoodbets Greyville feature, the Listed Kings Cup, are a sure sign that the SA Champions Season is on the horizon. That said, the visitors don’t look likely to start on a winning note.
ean Tarry saddles Silver God and the SA Champion won this race three years running before the Cup landed in a local cabinet last year - and another local in Dennis Bosch could hold the key with the grey Silvano gelding, Born To Perform. The enigmatic athlete looks nicely in off his 52kg mark and comes in fit. Brett Crawford’s G G’s Dynasty is a model of consistency and has won 5 of his last 7 starts. He continues to lift his game and must have a big shout here of a top three finish. Tristful is a kilo better off with G G’s Dynasty on their last start on the allweather and has the look of an improver. First of the Snaith duo, and jumping
from pole position, Knights Templar has been slightly disappointing but had excuses in his last outing. His stablemate, Jet Master Stakes winner Crown Towers benefitted from an inspired ride by Bernard Fayd’herbe last time and comes in with his tail up. Seattle Force has changed stables and has his second run in KZN after fading out in the umThombothi Stakes when 6,25 lengths behind Blackball last time. In theory, he could well enjoy the Hollywoodbets Greyville circuit as a dangerous front-runner and must be included. Camphoratus is a solid mare and as a former Gr1 winner must always be considered. She carries topweight of 61kgs and looks to have plenty to do.
Stop Press: International Racing In two important announcements as we went to print on Tuesday, news broke that all horseracing in Britain was suspended with effect from Wednesday up to the end of April. The decision will be kept under constant review. Churchill Downs Incorporated also announced its decision to reschedule the 146th Longines Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. The Derby has been rescheduled from 2 May to 5 September, while the Oaks has been moved from 1 May to 4 September. These dates are contingent upon final approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

Sizzling Spies Hollywoodbets-sponsored trainer Corne Spies enjoyed a double at Turffontein on Saturday, with his Potala Palace filly Singforafa ageing him a few years when she looked beaten, but got the better of a thrilling duel with Paul Peter’s Che Bella to win the R150 000 Listed Bauhinia Handicap. Such was the tight nature of the tussle between the top two, commentator Alistair Cohen put his proverbial on the line by calling a dead-heat. Apparently he had heard Singapore caller Luke Marlowe pull off the feat earlier in the week. While it was close, Craig Zackey got the big cheque on the top-rated filly Singforafa (77-20), who shaded her year older opponent Che Bella (21-4) by a painful nose in a time of 57,12 secs. Green Plains (11-2) was well beaten in third. “I don’t know how Craig kept her going,” said Spies. “Pity she hung in. It was a great run after a break and in the sticky going. I know owner Xander Spies will enjoy this!” said Zackey. Bred by Mr NJ Swart, who leases her to Corne’s Grandson, the winner is a daughter of Ridgemont Highlands’ Singspiel stallion Potala Palace out of the three-time winning Whistling Wood mare, First Whistle. A winner of the Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes as a 2yo, and once described by Zackey as one of the fastest fillies he has ridden, Singforafa took her win tally to 4 from 12 with 3 places and stakes of R462 125.
Damage Done Bloomin' Smart
St John Gray pulled his home-bred joker out of the pack in Saturday’s R150 000 Listed Derby Trial. “I thought at one stage that Christopher Robin’s sire Damage Is Done was doing just that to my broodmare band,” laughed the victorious breeder-owner-trainer afterwards. The 2000m feature was run in driving rain and it was 25-1 shot Christopher Robin who finished the strongest under the rampant Warren Kennedy. The victory was the kick start to a R384 905 Pick 6 dividend on the afternoon. While it’s no golden ticket to the SA Derby and third leg of the SA Triple Crown, which is run over 450m further on 4 April, the race would certainly have put paid to the hopes of a few starry-eyed hopefuls. The most experienced runner in the twelve-horse field, Christopher Robin has earned at over 50% of his starts and he duly showed that he could be a bit better than his rating suggests, with a sustained finish to hold off Nebraas (35-1) by 2,50 lengths in a time of 128,09 secs. Our Man In Havana (7-1) was the closes fancied runner, when he plodded into third. The rest were outgunned. Winning Form-sponsored jockey Warren Kennedy said that he found himself falling further and further back as the lead changed hands. “The turn was soft and he also floundered a bit. But when he picked it up late, he made it a professional performance,” he added. A winner of 3 races with 7 places from 18 starts for stakes of R263 825, Christopher Robin is a son of the now inactive Rakeen stallion Damage Is Done, who won 4 races from 1600-2000m, before being injured. The female line has produced champions Politician, Al Nitak and The Sheik but Damage Is Done got limited opportunities at stud. The winner is out of the five-time winning Malhub mare, Onehundredacrewood – who only won up to 1200m. The Derby is next on the programme. Who knows what happens if the rains come again?
Just a week earlier, Mary Slack was thrilled to have had a daughter of Wilgerbosdrift’s Gr1 winning sire Flower Alley chasing Summer Pudding home in the SA Fillies Classic.
On Saturday Flower Alley produced his 23rd individual stakes winner when another of his progressive 3yo daughters, Fayrooz, won the R150 000 Listed Ormond Ferraris Oaks Trial (2000m) at Turffontein on Saturday. Beautifully ridden by Marco van Rensburg, who was sadly to go on and fracture his clavicle in a fall later, the Mike De Kock-trained Fayrooz (13-1) pulled well clear in the closing stages, producing a powerful run up the outside. She produced a post-maiden cracker when storming home to beat Smoking Hot (18-1) by 5 lengths in a time of 128,57 secs. Irish Dame (22-1) was a further 2,25 lengths back in a strungout finish. The Rosedene Stud bred Fayrooz, her sire’s first South African stakes winner, has now won two of four starts and took her stakes bank to R150 300. Out of the Fort Wood mare Diamond Game, Fayrooz was a R140 000 buy from the 2018 CTS Ready To Run Sale. Her Gr1 Travers Stakes winning sire Flower Alley has made a bright start to his South African stud career, with his first local crop including the unbeaten Alibi Guy, recent Gr1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic runner up Marygold, Gr3 The Citizen Fillies Mile second Keep Smiling, and the progressive pair of Azores and Parterre. Flower Alley, whose 40 plus stakes horses include Kentucky Derby winning champion I’ll Have Another, has 18 lots on this year’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, including a halfsister (#168) to July winning champion Marinaresco, a halfbrother (#353) to recent Lady’s Pendant winner Elusive Heart, and a half-sister to Gr1 SA Fillies Classic winner Athina.

Ferraris Factor
Leg 1 - In The Bag
Mike de Kock and Callan Murray got punters off to a happy start in the R1,57 million Turffontein Pick 6 on Saturday, when the Klawervlei-bred favourite Vaseem proved too strong for his five rivals in the R135 000 Gold Rush Sprint. A son of Vercingetorix, Vaseem’s victory was full of merit as he was having his first start back from his Cape campaign where he ran third in the CTS 1200. He was also carried inwards late in the race by pacesetter Arapaho. Luke Ferraris had Arapaho out quickly after Illusion had to be snatched back at the start. Vaseem was confidently ridden by Murray a few lengths off and Ferraris appeared oblivious of the De Kock runner breathing down his neck at the 350m. But when the SA Champion Apprentice straightened Arapaho (11-1), Vaseem (17-10) cruised past to win the non black-type feature by 1,25 lengths in a time of 64,10 secs. Illusion (23-10) came on late to run third, a further 2,25 lengths back. A R275 000 Cape Yearling Sale buy, Vaseem has won 2 races in the silks of Al Adiyaat (SA) Pty Ltd, with 3 places from 6 starts for stakes of R917 950. He was bred by Klawervlei Stud from Vercingetorix (Silvano) out of the twice-winning Giant’s Causeway mare, Giant’s Bounty.
A textbook tactical ride by Luke Ferraris got Factor Fifty home to beat her older stablemate Flichity By Farr in the R135 0000 Sun Chariot Handicap at Turffontein on Saturday to give trainer David Niewenhuizen the feature exacta. A winner of her maiden at her second start by over 13 lengths, the dual stakes placed Factor Fifty was drawn at pole position in the small but competitive field that contested the 2400m non black-type event. But she simply outstayed her rivals as the winning trainer gave SA Champion Apprentice Luke Ferraris all the accolades. “Luke did everything right. His positioning was 100% and he applied his mind. The runner-up Flichity By Farr had a hard race a week ago and carrying 61kgs in this going wasn’t easy,” said Niewenhuizen. Starting a 3-1 favourite, Factor Fifty stormed home to win in a time of 157,43 secs. Flichity By Farr (97-20) was game in defeat, two lengths back, with Pilgrim’s Progress (10-1) rounding the trifecta off a short head away The original pacemaker Seville Orange faded out to run 15 lengths behind the winner. Sadly, Bondiblu broke down in running. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, the winner is a 4yo daughter of Marchfield, a son of legendary sire and Horse Of The Year A P Indy. Marchfield was a dual champion, millionaire and classic winner in Canada, where he won a trio of graded races and the classic Breeders’ Stakes. He has not been well supported here. An R85 000 BSA Cape Yearling Sale graduate, Factor Fifty is out of the accomplished winner-producing Model Man mare, Tanover. She has won 5 races with 5 places from 13 starts.
Allan Greeff and Ridgemont-Highlands sponsored rider Greg Cheyne have a serious chance of going all the way in the 2020 renewal of the R630 000 WSB East Cape Poly Challenge after former Gauteng resident Bold Coast turned on the acceleration to win the R110 000 opening leg over 1200m at Fairview on Friday. The top duo have walked this road before with now retired stable star Juan Two Three winning the first leg but not comfortable over further. “This was a plan come together. We finally have a horse that may take us all the way,” said Greeff after the 4-1 Bold Coast stayed on resolutely to beat the persistent Lets Play Ball (12-1) by a quarter lengths in a time of 69,32 secs. The 13-10 favourite Sire Frenchie had every chance, but failed to deliver his lethal finish, running a 1,50 length fourth. A R90 000 National 2yo Sale purchase, Bold Coast has won 7 races with 21 places from 38 starts for stakes of R719 500. The Ascot Stud-bred son of Bold Silvano (Silvano) is out of Tiger Ridge three-time winner, Kwacha. The next leg of the challenge is the R110 000 WSB East Cape Poly Challenge 1400 to be run at Fairview over 1400m on Friday 10 April. The third leg is the R110 000 WSB East Cape Poly Challenge 1600 which is run at Fairview over 1600m on Friday 15 May. The challenge is contested over three legs and a bonus of R250 000 is paid to the owner of the horse that wins all three, while a consolation bonus of R50 000 will be paid for the horse acquiring the most points in the event of there not being a winner of all three legs. The only condition is that to qualify, the horse must run in all three legs. Last year’s top points scorer was Lets Play Ball, who ran second on Friday. 5% of the bonus will be paid to winning trainer/s, 5% to the winning jockey/s and 0.5% to the winning groom. Horses that participate in both 1st and 2nd legs of the Eastern Cape Poly Challenge will not be subject to Entry and Declaration Fees in the 3rd leg.

Chase Maujean drives Mighty High to win as Muzi Yeni slogs away on third-placed Rebel’s Champ
Gr2 SENOR SANTA STAKES Turffontein last Saturday
Pathfork On A High
E
The R350 000 Gr2 Senor Santa Stakes produced the thriller as anticipated at Turffontein on Saturday with the flying Pathfork filly Mighty High rallying powerfully under a determined Chase Maujean to beat the favourite – another Pathfork – Mr Flood, who was bidding for his sixth win on the trot.
asy to back at 15-1, Mighty High produced a rare Senor Santa Stakes victory for the fairer sex in a race of dizzy highs and a tragic low – the outstanding 3yo Basadi Faith breaking down in running, to mar what was a classic sprint duel. It was a forgettable race for the defending champion Mardi Gras, who was always under a push of a ride and clearly wasn’t himself, finishing some 8,75 lengths off – and the Stipes report should tell us more.
But the race belonged to Ridgemont Highlands’ Sandownbased Irish Champion Pathfork, who sired the exacta and again underscored his great value – he stood for R10 000 last season. Coming down the outside from just two lengths off the gallop, the tough Mighty High (15-1), having her third run after a rest, ran on doggedly to resist the persistent and pace-charged Mr Flood (47-20) by a half length in 67,94 secs. Recently returned to action, Muzi
Gr2 Senor Santa Stakes MIGHTY HIGH’s rating remains unchanged on 108 after she captured the Gr2 Senor Santa Stakes over 1160m on the Turffontein straight course on Saturday. The Handicappers were of the view that fourth placed WARRIOR’S REST and fifth finisher ROMI’S BOY were the most suitable line horses to use in assessing this race and as such they remain unchanged on 113 and 105, respectively. In rating the race this way, MIGHTY HIGH which was rated to win at these weight terms, remains unchanged on 108. Runner-up MR FLOOD also remains unaltered on 120 – and in fact only one change was made to any rating in the entire field, with RIVARINE dropping slightly from 109 to 108.
Listed Derby Trial (Handicap) CHRISTOPHER ROBIN has had his rating upped from 83 to 89 following his fluent success in the Listed Derby Trial (handicap) for three-year-olds over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday. Third placed OUR MAN IN HAVANA was used as the line horse and accordingly remains unchanged on 88.However,
Yeni rode for his life in a bid cause the shock on the gallant Rebel’s Champ (16-1) who was a head away in third. Winning rider Chase Maujean said five minutes after the race that he was ‘still shocked’. “When I looked at our opposition, I thought this was going to be a mountain to climb. This was a gutsy win. A great team effort. Thanks to the owners for the opportunity,” he said. Trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren, who saddled last year’s winner Mardi Gras, said that the winner chipped a fetlock in KZN last season. “I am glad the owners persisted with her. She always had a sneak at the weights. I’m really thrilled as we have a nice record in this race,” he added. After showing plenty of toe,
Warrior’s Rest (16-1) was further 1,25 lengths back in fourth. While her injury has curtailed her career to some degree, Mighty High was Pathfork’s first ever Gr1 winner when she captured the 2018 Allan Robertson Championship and she continues to be great value for her R120 000 National Yearling Sale price tag! Bred by Maine Chance, Mighty High is out of the Shamardal mare, Bold Nimph. She has won 5 races with 4 places from 13 starts for total stakes of R1 037 949. An Irish Champion Two-YearOld, Pathfork brings the best of American pedigrees, strengthened through Sadler’s Wells’ influence in Europe, and is one of the best sire producing lines available, to mares in South Africa.
Mr Flood Stays A 120 Saturday’s feature race action from Turffontein has been assessed by the NHA Handicappers. runner-up NEBRAAS is up from 83 to 84. There were no other increases out of this race, but three horses received a rating’s drop – CAPETOWN AFFAIR drops from 76 to 75, MAGIC VISION is down from 75 to 72, and BANHA BRIDGE goes from 85 to 84.
Ormond Ferraris Listed Oaks Trial (Handicap) FAYROOZ has seen her rating adjusted from 74 to 89 after she easily beat her rivals to win the Listed Ormond Ferraris Oaks Trial for threeyear-old fillies on handicap terms over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday. FAYROOZ was making her handicap debut here after winning a maiden plate in her most recent start, and she was only having the fourth outing of her career, so she certainly appears to be a very progressive filly. Third placed IRISH DAME was deemed highly unlikely to have run below her rating in
a race of this calibre and was accordingly used as the line horse. Her rating thus remains unchanged on 77, but runner-up SMOKING HOT was raised from 76 to 81. Aside from the winner and runner-up, there were no ratings changes (either upwards or downwards) for any runner in this race as every one of them was a winner within their last three outings.
Listed Bauhinia Handicap SINGFORAFA has had her rating upped from 111 to 116 after she narrowly got the better of CHE BELLA to win the Listed Bauhinia Handicap for fillies and mares over 1000m at Turffontein on Saturday. Third placed GREEN PLAINS and fourth placed MADEMOISELLE were both used as line horses and therefore their ratings remain unaltered on 103 and 88, respectively. CHE BELLA, however, is up from 101 to 105.
Pathfork was the highest rated 2yo in Ireland in 2010 and one of the top 5 in the world. He was undefeated in 3 races as a juvenile with an official Timeform Rating of 120. His dam is a 3-part sister to Spinning World (TFR 130 – sire of Gr1’s in UK & Australasia) and Sagara (TFR 124).This is the sire producing female line of Redoute’s Choice, El Gran Senor, Northern Guest, etc. Pathfork has produced 17 black type horses and we have already heard whispers about his quintet on the National Yearling Sale next month. Lucky owner, and an astute breeder, Geoff van Lear says none are smarter than #142 – named Shikoku, she’s a Pathfork half to his multiple Graded Stakes winning flyer, Schippers (Var).
In assessing this race, the Handicappers exercised considerable caution and picked up neither the winner nor the runner-up to their actual achieved marks. It was taken into account when allocating new ratings to the pair that both fillies have run well above their profiles in the Bauhinia Handicap which may be attributed to the underfoot conditions on the day. It was therefore deemed prudent to only apply half the adjustment to the first two. There were no other increases, but several horses were given a ratings drop – TRUE CHARM is down from 100 to 98, NICKY NOO goes from 99 to 97, LESEDI LA RONA drops from 97 to 94, POOL PARTY was cut from 100 to 98, CAPITIANA is down to 88 from 90, ULLA drops from 98 to 96, and DALAI’S PROMISE was cut from 100 to 97. NAWAASI, who raced off a 90 here, had in fact been dropped to 88 subsequent to the publication of the weights for this event and was not given a further reduction as a result of this race. Important Sales Date Changes
T
Bloodstock South Africa have announced important amendments to the 2020 sales programme. This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa¹s address to the nation on 15 March and is in line with his urging for a responsible approach to the Covid-19 Virus.
here are specific restrictions on public gatherings that need to be adhered to and as such Bloodstock South Africa will be implementing the following change of dates regarding its 2020 Sales programme: The Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale will be postponed from its current date of 22, 23 & 24 April 2020. The proposed new dates are 20, 21 & 22 May 2020, but remain provisional and will be reviewed on 16 April 2020. This mirrors government’s target date for the evaluation of the situation surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. As such the tentative provisional dates for the remaining BSA sales are: • Cape Mare Sale 11 June 2020 • Kwa Zulu Natal Yearling Sale 23 and 24 July 2020 (weekend of Champions Cup & Gold Cup) • Emperors Palace National Two-Year-Old Sale 17 and 18 September 2020 • Emperors Palace Ready to Run and November Two Year Old Sale 1 November 2020 Dr Bennie van der Merwe, who is Veterinary Advisor to the TBA, told the Sporting Post that he felt that the decision to provisionally move the sale date on was the soundest and wisest one in the circumstances. “BSA were really between a rock and a hard place. It’s all very fresh in the mind and the mood is sombre and unsettled. I have spoken to international experts and the epidemiological thinking of restricting social interaction and attempting to flatten the infection curve by taking the sting out of the virus through two infection cycles is the most sensible approach, Our government acted timeously and have done the right thing. That said, I believe their ‘maximum gathering figure’ of 100 is purely a random number scientifically.
The rest of the world has used 200, while Australia are 500,” he said. Bloodstock South Africa thanked everyone for their understanding in this matter and assured them that decisions were not taken lightly but in the interests of the safety of the thoroughbred breeding community at large. The safety of staff, vendors, buyers and suppliers is of utmost importance and they will be closely monitoring the designated channels of authority within South Africa and provide relevant updates where necessary. Should you have any questions or queries please contact Bloodstock South Africa.

Race From Home
I
Racing continues behind closed doors on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville with an interesting eight-race programme, which will also welcome the powerful Justin Snaith stable to KZN shores for the first time this season.
n preparation for the KZN Champions season, Snaith’s first float arrived at Summerveld two weeks ago. On the float was two-time Vodacom Durban July winner Do It Again, along with the consistent Bunker Hunt, and two horses which line-up in the Listed Kings Cup on Sunday in Crown Towers and Knights Templar. The Snaith duo will look to get things off to a good start for the Cape team but it won’t be easy as the KZN contingent hold a strong hand in this contest. Camphoratus from the Robbie Hill yard ran an impressive comeback run when behind True To Life recently. She looks to be leading the KZN
charge in this contest and taking on the boys, it will be no surprise to see her in the winner’s enclosure today. Others from the home province that will be competitive are G G’S Dynasty and Born To Perform, who will be ridden by Craig Zackey and Warren Kennedy respectively. The advice from the Winning Form tipsters is to get your copy of Winning Form, open a Hollywoodbets account and punt from the comfort of your home. *The team at Winning Form encourages you to practice good hygiene continuously in accordance with the South African Department of Health.

Muzi’s Back On Track!
It took him five meetings to find the winner’s enclosure, but Muzi Andile Yeni is back on track and he put his three month suspension blues behind him in style at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday with an armchair ride on the Weiho Marwing visitor Adorable Alley.
O
bviously loaded with pent-up frustration, courtesy of celebrating his 33rd birthday while banned, and the worse for wear having to watch Tellytrack on the sidelines for three months, Muzi was quick on the chirp bandwagon – “I’m surprised they allowed me back here,” he smiled in an obvious reference to the very square metre of real estate where his championship chasing foot-in-themouth troubles started in the first place. “At least the fans know I haven’t forgotten how to ride winners. Hopefully the owners and trainers remember too,” he laughed. But it was clear that whether one labels him by his childhood nickname ‘MPL’, ‘Magic Muzi’, or even ‘The Mouth’, the Clermontborn multiple Northern Cape champion definitely has his loyal fan base and his return was greeted with enthusiasm by punters, who obviously appreciate the star quality spiced with attitude, and the talent of one of our shortest, yet hardest working riders. Let’s face it – he is a natural lightweight, but it must be a quandary for some of his colleagues when Muzi can take a holiday for almost fifty percent of the season and still maintain a top ten position on the national log.
Muzi Yeni And despite the long break, he has also ridden more horses this term than any of the 100 odd registered riders, bar log-leader Warren Kennedy and Chase Maujean. Adorable Alley was Muzi’s 65th winner of the term and he holds 9th position on the log with a 10% win strike-rate.

Keagan de Melo
T
Who knows anything about Keagan de Melo? With no ego to vent, or sponsor to chirp about in post-race interviews, and a generally serious approach to his career, the quietly spoken KZNbased rider, who rode a terrific double at Durbanville on Saturday, clearly tends to avoid the limelight.
he Alberton-born jockey turns 27 on 24 September and he and fiance’ Demi Murray – a soon to be Lawyer and sister of another progressive young rider in Callan Murray – are expecting a daughter in a few weeks. Keagan has quietly chipped away at building his career and currently holds third position on both the Cape jockey log and the SA national log. A decade on from his nervous first winner on Western Gem for the now Korea-based Bart Rice at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on 8 August 2010, he has quietly honed his skills and developed into a consistent professional. “Don’t take notice of the 4kg tearaway claimers and the jokers and the talkers – watch this young De Melo. He has got the temperament, attitude and the ability. Give him time and he will be top of the log in a couple of years.” That was an unsolicited quote from a past SA champion jockey to the Sporting Post in 2018. The assessment is seemingly on track to becoming reality. Top racing scribe and a man who has watched a few races, Michael Clower wrote after Keagan’s Durbanville double last Saturday that his enterprising riding is beginning to
Lady Christine Laidlaw leads in Fillies Nursery winner Delta Queen (Keagan in saddle)
change the accepted wisdom of riding at Durbanville. “Before he came along few jockeys were bold enough to attempt to challenge on the inside for fear of the gap being slammed shut in their faces but he often finds a way through on the rails – Meet At The George was a typical example – and Anthony Andrews did the same on 10-1 shot Six Degrees in the Interbet.co.za Handicap.” Trainer Dean Kannemeyer, a top amateur jockey in his day, and a man who rode before he could walk, was enjoying a purple streak during his partnership with Anthony Delpech. When the time came to find a replacement, Dean didn’t rush into it. He liked what he saw in De Melo and the duo have been a partnership for nearly two years now. “I have always believed that a dedicated stable jockey is vital to the success of any top yard. They get to know
the horses. They can provide sensible feedback. There is continuity. They are part of the team. Keagan has the right temperament, the natural ability and the professional approach to his career. Any jockey who is willing to listen and learn, and bounce back with enthusiasm and commitment, is a valuable asset. He hasn’t been riding for years but he can only continue to grow and refine his skills. A level-headed and talented youngster,” added Kannemeyer. Keagan started his apprenticeship in 2009 and his intake included Julius Mariba, Jason Smitsdorff and Stallone Naidoo. We asked him why he had decided to base himself in KZN. “By the time I had finished my apprenticeship at the SA Jockey Academy, I felt as though I had built up enough support in KZN to remain here and develop my professional career. As much as I miss my family in Johannesburg, I prefer both the professional and personal lifestyle that I have been privileged enough to enjoy on the coast,” he said. Keagan, a dedicated Arsenal supporter, maintains his fitness levels by riding work each morning and racing regularly. He says he can eat normally and is comfortable at 53 kgs. He has built up a good support base in the Cape, even beyond the Kannemeyer yard. “I started going down for Mr Kannemeyer and now enjoy some nice additional support there. The racing in both centres is good quality, but I must admit that the pace in the Cape tends to be a bit slower than in KZN. One gets used to it and adjusts.”
Keagan’s goal is to ride his first Gr1 winner and every year he aims to step up his riding both physically and statistically. A Gr1 could surely be in the pipeline this season. He is knocking on the door having won the Gr2 Durban July Consolation three years in a row and also the Gr2 Premier’s Trophy at Kenilworth in the Cape summer season. He says that he could be riding some really nice horses during the coming KZN feature season. “The Kannemeyer Stable has many nice horses and to name a few, the likes of Cape Fillies Nursery winner Delta Queen, Azores, African Warrior, Sir Michael, Cool Runnings and the recently gelded Seventh Gear, come to mind. Then I also ride Silent Crusade for Mr Dixon. So between those, there could be plenty to look forward to,” he smiles. As to the demands of fatherhood balanced with a testing career that includes travelling, Keagan says he is looking forward to it. He enjoys life in Assagay, where he has lived since the end of his apprenticeship, “Demi and I have been together for 6 years and we were in a longdistance relationship for 5 of those years, so we are used to the odd working hours and traveling commitments. That being said, I try to make the most of the time I have at home during the day with my family and I will take each day as it comes once my daughter is born. Luckily Demi will have some time off to care for our baby girl until she is admitted as a Legal
Practitioner later on in the year. I cannot wait to become a father and experience this new chapter in my life. I am not so sure that I am ready for all of the nappy changing though!” he laughs. His face straightens to serious when we ask how the coronavirus threat has impacted on his psyche. “The widespread impact of the coronavirus disaster is truly heartbreaking. I will be taking extra precautions when traveling and working, using hand sanitizers and boosting my immune system with the vitamins and nutrients it needs. Knowing that my daughter will be born in a few weeks is extremely frightening given the uncertainty of the virus. But for now I am not panicking and just living as healthy of a lifestyle as possible,” he adds maturely. Keagan admits he adopts a chilled attitude to life and is thankful for the small mercies rather than stressed about the things he can’t change. He rates loyalty and integrity top of the pile and says both characteristics feature strongly in his career highlights so far. “I’d have to sum up my highlights as the support of stables such as Mr Dixon and Mr Drier, who have both been loyal to me throughout my career, and being a part of the Howells Racing Team when they won the KZN Championship. And latterly being stable jockey to the well-respected Dean Kannemeyer Racing Team. I have been lucky to have these top trainers feature in my foundation success.”

George Best The Terry Andrews-bred Vercingetorix filly Meet At The George was a smart winner at her fourth start at Durbanville on Saturday, after earning at her first three outings. Described as a ‘fun filly’ by her host of owners, her name was apparently inspired by a popular Umhlanga Rocks watering hole. Trainer Dean Kannemeyer said that he had heard of the Umhlanga venue. She should pay to follow.

Again? Justin Snaith, who fields his first KZN feature runners for 2020 at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday, was quoted in reports recently that he needs a big SA Champions Season to put the Cape Summer Season behind him. Snaith’s big horse will probably be Do It Again, who bids to make history with a third consecutive victory in the Vodacom Durban July. Check the July ante-post betting on www.hollywoodbets.net.
Big! The fortunes of 22 year old South African champion jockey Lyle Hewitson continued to flourish in Japan when he rode his second double on Saturday in his third race meeting since arriving in the country. Hewitson rode three winners last week at Nakayama Racecourse but they were all on the dirt. This weekend they moved to the turf.
Liam’s On NOT SO BIG D Who is doing anything about the Cape racing programme? Nobody it seems. We hear that Saturday’s meeting had to be hand crafted by the NRB. They ended up with 77 runners in 8 races.
Delayed? The long-awaited European Union (EU) audit for the South African Bloodstock Industry is scheduled for between 20 April and 1 May 2020. But with travel restrictions imposed by the state of disaster announced on Sunday evening, it is likely that this date could well now be postponed.
The Hemel ‘N Aarde based Jay Peg enjoyed feature success in Zimbabwe on Sunday, when his son Peggson captured the Listed Breeders Champions Cup at Borrowdale racecourse. It was a triumphant afternoon for the Bridget Stidolph yard. The stable sent out the winners of both feature races, and Mathew Thackeray rode both. Former Castle Tankard winner Peggson ran out an easy winner of the Breeders Champions Cup when scoring by three lengths over Three To Tango. Bred by the Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, five-year-old Peggson (who was conceding weight to his rivals) made it win number six with his Sunday victory. Peggson has a Time Thief half-brother (# 330) on offer at this year’s delayed National Sale.
Save The Date
This could change in view of the NYS date shift, but the Cape Breeders Club 2020 Golf Day is pencilled in for Monday 18 May at De Zalze Golf Estate in Stellenbosch. Watch this space.
The Map
The 2,5kg Milnerton-based claimer Liam Tarentaal booted home his third winner at Durbanville on Saturday after a long absence following a leg break. Tarentaal, who has enjoyed an unorthodox apprenticeship, numbers a couple of Dubai winners in his 33 victory tally. He rode Skidoo to victory for Paul Reeves. The What A Winter gelding, who was registering his third strike on the trot, is in the Reeves SA Champions Season ten-strong travelling team.
Marco Out Top lightweight Marco van Rensburg is likely to be out of action for over six weeks after a fall at Turffontein on Saturday. He was dislodged when his mount Bondiblu broke down about 600m from home in the Sun Chariot Handicap. Marco underwent an operation for a fractured clavicle on Sunday evening. Sadly Bondiblu had to be humanely euthanised.

In Our Own Hands
Hollywoodbets Greyville 8 March They raced on the turf on Sunday where the faster of the two 1000m races that got proceedings underway was the MR78 Handicap won by WE LIGHT THE FIRE. Freely available at 15/2 at the off, the poorly drawn son of Gimmethegreenlight raced in the backend of midfield early on. He ran on strongly in the short home straight and won well by a length and a quarter from the luckless CONSTANTINE. The only other distance to stage more than one race was 2000m where both of the events were maiden plates. The first division was the quicker and here we saw a comfortable victory for the well supported BRIGADE. Backed into 9/2 from 10’s, Paul Gadsby’s charge raced sixth for most of the journey. He was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 200m marker and comfortably accounted for SONJADOR by two. In terms of distance the easiest victory on the card was recorded by MASTER OF DESTINY when getting off the mark in the maiden plate over 1600m. Sent off a well-supported favourite at 13/10, Dennis Drier’s charge was soon positioned close to the speed. He put his head in front going through the 300m and drew clear easily in the closing stages of the race to score by four and a quarter. TITBITS Running on stoutly from midfield, WALLS OF DUBROVNIK only had to be pushed out when winning the opening Juvenile Plate going away by a length and a half.

Vaal 10 March The two 1000m events on the Vaal’s classic card on Tuesday were both maiden plates and in the faster of these, the boy’s division we saw a smart performance from the newcomer ROGER THE DODGER. Freely available at 30/1 on the off Corne Spies’ charge raced in the rear during the early part of the race. He quickened best of all when given rein, and won going away by a length and a half after striking the front 120m from home. The MR80 Handicap was by far the faster of the two 2000m events on the card and here victory went to the 2/1 favourite NIMCHA. In touch throughout, Gary Alexander’s charge was ridden to lead approaching the 300m pole and kept on strongly in the closing stages of the race to fend off a determined challenge from GENTLEMAN ONLY by a quarter. A MR80 Handicap over 1200m brought the meeting to a close and here a major upset was to be had when the column’s top rated selection INDIAN SONG registered her third career victory. Easy to back at 75/1 at the off, Barend Botes’ charge raced in midfield early on. He ran on strongly over the final 400m and with the rest well beaten he got the better of the 33/1 shot MOVIE SHOW by three quarters. TITBITS

On A High Turffontein 14 March The Gr2 Senor Santa Handicap topped the bill on the old stand side track on Saturday and in what proved to be by far the fastest of the three races over the distance, MIGHTY HIGH caused an upset. Positioned sixth of the ten early on, the daughter of Pathfork was ridden to lead 300m out by Chase Maujean, and kept on strongly in the latter stages of the race to beat the rallying front runner MR FLOOD by a half. The Derby Trial was the faster of the two listed events over 2000m and here another upset was to be had when CHRISTOPHER ROBIN gained his third career success. Allowed to drift right out to 25/1 from 12’s at the track, St John Gray’s charge sat in midfield for most of the journey. He quickened well in
the heavy rain that fell throughout the race, and after striking the front 250m from home, he won going away by two and a half. The Mike De Kock trained VASEEM was the best bet on the card for most, and the son of Vercingetorix didn’t let down his supporters. Allowed to drift at the track as money came for the Paul Peter trained ILLUSION, Vaseem was always handy. He ran on strongly over the final 400m and with the rest well beaten he got the better of Ilusion’s front running stable companion ARAPAHO by a length and a quarter. Durbanville 14 March Four of the eight races at the country course on Saturday were staged over 1600m and in the fastest of these, the MR84 Handicap, the nibbled at SIX DEGREES gained his third win. Always handy, Glen Kotzen’s charge put his head in front 100m out and won well by three quarters from the marginally more fancied PATH OF CHOICE. 1250m was the only other distance to stage more than one race and in marginally the faster NAP BETS of the two maiden juvenile plates that opened up proceedings, the newcomer ZARINA won a * Fancied ** Strongly fancied good race. Nicely positioned in fourth, in what soon became a strung out field, the daughter of *** Very strongly fancied Master Of My Fate was always well positioned to strike. She did so 60m from home, and won going away by three quarters. Race three on the card was a maiden plate for the girls over 1400m and here we saw a smart performance from the 3yo MEET AT THE GEORGE. Sent off a strong favourite at 14/10, Dean Kannemeyer’s charge sat fifth, and was always doing it easily. She only had to be pushed out in order to take up the running 200m out, and won with some in hand. Horses worth following at their next few starts... TITBITS

All Over The World!

Fastnet Rock, one of the very best sire sons of legendary stallion Danehill, is in the middle of another great season.
dual Champion Sire in Australia in both 20112012 and 2014-2015, Fastnet Rock has already supplied four graded stakes winners since the start of 2020. His star performers thus far include the remarkably versatile Avantage, a Gr1 winner from 1200-2000m, and Gr1 New Zealand Derby hero, Sherwood Forest. His 2yo daughter, Personal, looks poised for a big effort in the Gr1 Golden Slipper and she could well add further to her sire’s success, while Fastnet Rock’s son, Inverloch, captured the Listed Morning Cup Prelude on Saturday.
In The Black Fastnet Rock has produced 156 stakes winners - and a further 130 plus black type horses - with his tally of black type winners headed by an impressive 38 individual Gr1 winners. Sherwood Forest’s win ensured that Fastnet Rock is now the leading sire son of Danehill by individual Gr1 winners. In contrast, the late Redoute’s Choice has been responsible for 37 G1 winners, Dansili for 21, Exceed And Excel currently for 15, and Danehill Dancer for 23. Remarkably, Fastnet Rock has produced at least one Gr1 winner per year since 2009. Not only has he proved to be a prolific sire of stakes horses, but the son of the versatile Danehill has also proved a very versatile stallion. This fact can clearly be seen when looking at Fastnet Rock’s list of G1 winners, with his top level winners including top sprinters and classic winners. His progeny have notched up Gr1 victories in all of Australia,
Britain, France, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, and North America. His current star, Avantage, is a perfect example of her sire’s versatility, with the filly winning the Gr1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (at two) over 1400m, and this season’s Gr1 JR &N Berkett Telegraph (over 1200m), the Gr1 Haunui Farm WFA Group One Classic (over 1600m) and the Gr1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (over 2000m). A plain headed bay, Fastnet Rock made a tremendous start with his first crop (born in 2006), including 13 individual stakes winners of 23 black type races. From a limited number of runners, Fastnet Rock has also made his presence felt in South Africa. His son, Curved Ball, won three of seven starts, including the 2009 Gr2 Dingaans, before retiring to stud, while the blue-blooded Fastnet Rock daughter, Ngaga, won four in this country, including the Listed East Coast Cup of 2018.
Run Fast The Fastnet Rock sired Gr1 William Reid Stakes winning son, Foxwedge, has also made his mark here, with Foxwedge the sire of both brilliant filly, Run Fox Run, (winner of five of her first six starts, including both the Gr2 World Sports Betting Southern Cross Stakes and Listed Olympic Duel Stakes) and Engen Performance Stakes winner, Infamous Fox. To date, Foxwedge is the sire of 17 stakes winners, with his progeny also including the Gr1 winners Foxplay, Urban Fox and Volpe Veloce. Foxwedge is not the only son of Fastnet Rock to make his mark at stud. His deceased son, Hinchinbrook, who died in 2018,
has a total of 20 stakes winners to his name, with his star performers including the Gr1 winners, Beat The Clock (Hong Kong Sprint), Press Statement (Caulfield Guineas), Spring (Sangster Stakes), and Seabrook (Champagne Stakes). Hinchinbrook’s high-class son, Press Statement, a Gr1 winner at both two and three, is currently among the leading first-crop sires in Australia this season. The well- related Fastnet Rock horse, Smart Missile, (whose dam was a half-sister to ill-fated highclass sire, Northern Meteor), and Fastnet Rock’s Gr1 Newmarket Handicap winner, Wanted, are the sires of Gr1 winners Maid Of Heaven (Spring Champion Stakes) and Leicester (South Australian Derby) respectively. With sons such as Fascinating Rock and Merchant Navy yet to have runners, Fastnet Rock’s legacy as a sire of sires should continue to grow over the coming seasons. Fastnet Rock’s sire, Danehill, as damsire of many top Galileo runners, including Frankel and Teofilo, has built up a remarkable record when mated to daughters of Galileo. At the time of writing, Galileo rates as the broodmare sire of seven of Fastnet Rock’s Gr1 winners, namely Qualify (Investec Oaks), Intricately (Moyglare Stud Stakes), Rivet (Racing Post Trophy), Zhukova (Man O’War Stakes), Magicool (Queensland Derby), Age Of Fire (Levin Classic), and Unforgotten (Australian Oaks).
Galileo Gold In total, Galileo is broodmare sire of no fewer than 18 black-type winners sired by Fastnet Rock.
Ascot Stud-bred (Bold Silvano - Kwacha)
WON first leg - R630 000 WSB East Cape Poly Challenge Fairview 13 March
Congratulations to all the connections! 7 wins, 21 places in 38 starts
Galileo’s sire, Sadler’s Wells, is damsire of the Fastnet Rock sired Gr1 Pretty Polly Stakes winner, Diamondsandrubies, while Sadler’s Wells’ son, Scenic, is damsire of the sire’s G1 Flight Stakes winner, First Seal. Late champion sires Zabeel and Giant’s Causeway are other stallions whose daughters have enjoyed sustained success when sent to Fastnet Rock. Zabeel is broodmare sire of the Fastnet Rock sired Gr1 winners, Atlantic Jewel, Avantage, and Planet Rock, while Giant’s
Causeway is damsire of the sire’s Gr1 winners, Awesome Rock and Sherwood Forest. Winner of both the Gr1 Oakleigh Plate and Gr1 Lightning Stakes, Fastnet Rock is also enjoying increasing success as a broodmare sire, his tally being five stakes winners in 2020, including Gr1 Lightning Stakes winner, Gytrash (Lope De Vega). The latter is one of three Gr1 winners produced by daughters of Fastnet Rock thus far, joining Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) and Tivaci (High Chaparral).

M
ore than 470 yearlings were catalogued for this year’s sale, with the majority of this country’s leading breeders set to be represented at South Africa’s premier yearling sale in 2020. Once again, this year’s National Sale will be held at the TBA complex in Germiston, with the 3 day sale now set to commence on the revised date of 20 May, concluding on 22 May.
The sale made history last year, when the Silvano colt, Masaki, was knocked down to Shadwell South Africa for R9 000 000, making the brother to Gr1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes winner Nightingale the most expensive thoroughbred ever sold at public auction in South Africa.
