The National Yearling Sale is widely accepted as the holy grail of our thoroughbred sales programme. South Africa’s time honoured nursery of champions is a show with the minimum of bells and whistles, where the honour roll of winners does the serious talking.
Fine Selection
A total of 526 lots will come under the hammer commencing Tuesday 24 April in a bumper and diverse catalogue spanning three days and encompassing all of South Africa’s leading sires and top breeders.
The damlines are strong, with 13 Gr1 winners respresented, including two of our finest racemares of recent years, in Triple Tiara winner Cherry On The Top and top-class Met winner River Jetez.
High Flyers
The 21st century poster boy of this sale, the 2013 R425 000 buy Legal Eagle, won the Gr1 H.F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes for a third year running just over a week ago to take his earnings to well over R11 million. It is a timely reminder that the dreams are here for the buying.
Our leading sires are all on show, with promising younger producers Elusive Fort, Gimmethegreenlight, Querari, Twice Over and What A Winter balancing the needs equation. Stallions represented by first SA yearlings at the sale include Capetown Noir, Captain Of All, Flower Alley, Kingsbarns, Linngari, Soft Falling Rain, Time Thief, Vercingetorix and Wylie Hall. The exciting Galileo sire Nathaniel –whose very first crop produced European Horse Of The Year and five time Gr1 winner Enable – is also represented.
Housekeeping
For the first time in recent years, the sale will be divided into two sessions, with day one devoted to a select session. The first session, which runs up to lot 231, continues into the second day. Each day of trading will commence at 11h30, with the first day ending on lot 170. Day two will see lots up to 350 go under the hammer, while the third and final day will host the balance of the yearlings on offer. Michael Holmes, BSA CEO, confirmed that the sale is set to be one of the most well-attended in many years, with a host of local and international enquiries suggesting a vibrant buying bench.
Beyond the champion miler, past alumni of this outstanding sale include recently exported Equus Champion Marinaresco, the Gr1 winner Captain America, another past Horse Of The Year and outstanding sire Dynasty, as well as his champion sons Futura and Legislate.

A R1m yearling in 2011, Capetown Noir won 8 races from 1200m to 2000m, notably Gr1 Cape Guineas and Gr1 Cape Derby as a 3yo, and Gr1 Queen’s Plate at 4. He was voted Equus Champion Miler at 3. Rated MR 116. Capetown Noir started his stud career at Summerhill, his 2015 fee R20.000.
Breeders Handbook considers Capetown Noir’s significant female line ancestor to be the mare Spits, who is closely kinbred. Her main elements are descendants of the mare Agnes Court (Polly Agnes). Spits was mated to Noble Chieftain, a descendant of the Agnes Court female line, resulting in Martha, the 5th dam of Capetown Noir. Martha’s daughter Donna Anna was mated to Jungle Cove, whose female line has the same remote ancestry (Fam 16), resulting in Jungle Janna. The latter got Guineas winner Dance Every Dance from a mating to Northern Guest, whose significant female line ancestry brought more of Fam 16. Another Western Winter’s son Winter Solstice, Horse of the Year, is from Fam 16 female line. His 5th dam Brandy Ball and Capetown Noir’s 5th dam Martha are very close kin. Breeders Handbook suggests that suitable lines for Capetown Noir could include multiples of Fam 16 female line carriers, remote or otherwise. That’s the fee for Dynasty, who stood at R250k in 2015, just a few months after his son Futura made Horse Of The Year. He has nineteen yearlings on offer, including full brothers to Legislate and Eyes Wide Open, and half siblings to Snowdance, Yorker and French Navy. Next highest fee that season was for Silvano at R200k. Interestingly, Captain Al was Champion Sire in 2015, in a four-way finish with Trippi, Dynasty and Silvano – in that order. Less than a million in progeny earnings separated the four stallions, Captain Al’s runners collecting R16.087.976.

The highest number of yearlings at the sale by a first-season stallion Way ahead of the established sires are the Wilgerbosdrift pair of Flower Alley (33 yearlings) and Soft Falling Rain (29). Flower Alley is technically not a firstseason sire, as this is his first local crop – in the USA he’s sire of G1 winners of both sexes, including Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another, now a sire in Japan.

It belongs to the Var filly Goddess Var, subsequently renamed Ghaalla on behalf of the buyer, Sheikh Hamdan. Bred by Varsfontein the filly is a first foal of her one-time winning dam Fidelity, who is a half sister by Captain Al to freshman sire Master Of My Fate. Ghaalla made her debut on 17 March over 1160m at Turffontein, winning by a shorthead at odds of 5/4. The rest of the runners were five lengths and more in arrears.

The early date is no surprise, as the dam has a history of foaling abnormally ‘early’ – for her first foal, the stakes placed 4-time winner, the mare was covered on 11 November and gave birth on 7 September. The yearling, named Affonso, is consigned by Piemonte Stud. The youngest is #523, born on Boxing Day, 26 December 2016. Named Sweet Chariot, she’s a half sister by Noble Tune to five winners, their dam a half sister to Gr1 winner Gilded Minaret. The consignor is Kjell Foundation. A $165.000 Keeneland yearling in 2004, Flower Alley won five races from a mile to 2000m on dirt in USA. He won the G1 Travers S. and ran second in the G1 Breeder’s Cup Classic. He was the second highest rated 3yo in USA, with Timeform 127. At stud he sired G1 Kentucky Derby winner and US Champion 3yo colt I’ll Have Another in his second crop, as well as champion filly My Wandy’s Girl (subsequently sold as broodmare prospect for $700.000). Flower Alley, a son of US Champion Sire and sire-of-sires Distorted Humor, started his South African studcareer at Wilgerbosdri�. His 2015 fee was R80.000 (with a published ‘book full’).
Breeders Handbook makes the observation that the dam of Flower Alley, Princess Olivia, is by Lycius whose dam is a daughter of Lyphard. Flower Alley’s fourth dam is a daughter of Goofed, the dam of Lyphard. This gives Princess Olivia a 4x4 double of Goofed, and a possible source of breeding excellence. She is dam of stakes winners in Japan, rated TFR 120/123, who are by Deep Impact, whose dam Wind In Her Hair is a daughter of Alzao, by Lyphard. The pedigree of Wind In Her Hair makes her very close kin to Lyphard’s son Elliodor, whose dam is full sister to Busted, the damsire of Wind In Her Hair. Deep Impact is from the same female line as Right Approach, who has several daughters out of Elliodor mares. he grandam of Distorted Humor, Sweetest Chant, is very close kin to Bold Reason and Never Bend. A large proportion of Distorted Humor’s G1 winners have Sadler’s Wells (as sire of dam, grandam, or damsire). Sadler’s Wells’ line of Bold Reason appears significant in his best offspring. Lalun, the dam of Bold Reason and Never Bend, is a noted La Troienne carrier, and La Troienne is invariably present in multiples in Distorted Humor’s best offspring. This apparent affinity for La Troienne (in Flower Alley present through Sadler’s Wells’ damsire Bold Reason) is emphasised in I’ll Have Another whose dam has a double of Bold Reason’s half brother Never Bend and whose damsire Pleasant Tap is from the La Troienne female line. The close resemblance of performance at stud of Distorted Humor and Trippi makes the latter’s daughters interesting options for Flower Alley. There are a good few Flower Alley yearlings who have notable pedigrees: #2 filly, third foal of unraced Jallad half-sister to Gypsy’s Warning et al. The mare’s first foal is a stakes winner. The yearling’s pedigree shows unusually strong kin-breeding connec�ons along bo�om-lines of sire and dam, including to Goofed. This qualifies as a cracker in Breeder’s Handbook terms. (Varsfontein) #31 half brother to Gr1 Noordhoek Flyer; the grandam is by Dancing Brave, a son of Lyphard (Wilgerbosdri�) #101 colt, first foal of mul�ple Gr1/Gr2 placed Irish dam from a highclass family. Soft Falling Rain is from the US female line of multiple US Champion sire Smart Strike, prompting Breeders Handbook to suggest that kin-breeding to members of that female line might be beneficial. How long can a sire remain fashionable? By looking at the top prices at the National Sale over an extended period, patterns arise. The SI (Sale Index) makes it possible to get perspective from the 21-year period. SI = Sale Index is the price of the yearling compared to the average price of all yearlings of the same sex at the same sale – an SI of 1.00 means the price is exactly average. Here a bottom cut-off SI of 2.50 was used.
