Now in its seventh year, the mystique and unknown of this unique inner city sale has been quickly surpassed by the burgeoning honour roll of Gr1 winners and stakes performers, while offering a playground of abundant quality and variety for the connoisseur and casual consumer alike. The alluring cocktail of Cape Thoroughbred Sales’ true-blue Cape hospitality, our plodding currency and a host of local stars and internationally sought after sires has seen international interest grow to the point that makes this a must-attend date on the calendar. The quality catalogue has something for every taste but there is little doubt that the three fillies and one colt by unbeaten superstar racer Frankel will have the impressive Cape Town International Convention Centre at capacity. His first three come up on day 1 of the sale. Frankel, whose first 3yo runner stepped out just a matter of days ago at Newcastle, has had five stakes winners and celebrated his first Gr1 winner in mid December. The ten time Gr1 winner has stamped his progeny and captured the imagination of buyers in both hemispheres. All the major local stars are there, with SA champion sire Trippi well respresented with 14 lots, while perennial champion producers Captain Al and Dynasty have 33 between them. Besides the offspring of 12 Gr1 winning mares going through the ring, the impressive catalogue is rounded off with premier international stallion representation. Names like Bernardini, Elusive Quality, Rock of Gibraltar, Scat Daddy and Pierro needing no introduction!

Breeders Cup – Here We Come

The sale catalogue features a host of yearlings where there is a stamp on the page showing ‘Breeders Cup Nominated’. What does it mean?

There are many Breeders' Cup sponsored races during the racing season in N-America, with two main days at the end of the year, the Breeder’s Cup World Championship. All horses wanting to compete in BC World Championship races have to be nominated at some time during their career, at a fee. The fee depends on the time when the horse is nominated, and whether the sire of the horse was nominated as a Breeders' Cup stallion for the birth-year of the horse and the season (N- or S-hemisphere) in which it was conceived. For example, Frankel is a BC-nominated stallion, but only for N-hemisphere. Which is why the Frankel yearlings in the catalogue do not have the ‘BC Nominated’ stamp. It also means that to nominate such a yearling for the Breeders' Cup a higher fee is charged than if Frankel had nominated for S-hemisphere foals.

This is how the Breeders' Cup describes it: Horses of Racing Age Nomination Program Horses may be nominated at any time during their racing career. All horses must be nominated to compete in the Breeders' Cup World Championships. All nominations made by July 15th receive a discount on the racehorse nomination fee. ELIGIBILITY Sired by Nominated Stallion & Nominated before July 15th. Two Year Olds $12,000 Three Year Olds & Up (N-hemisphere-bred) $50,000 Three Year Olds & Up (S- hemisphere-bred) $25,000

Two Year Olds $100,000 Three Year Olds & Up (N-hemisphere-bred) $100,000 Three Year Olds & Up (S- hemisphere-bred) $100,000 Sired by NON Nominated Stallion & Nominated before July 15th. Two Year Olds$18,000 Three Year Olds & Up (N-hemisphere-bred) $100,000 Three Year Olds & Up (S-hemisphere-bred) $50,000 Sired by NON Nominated Stallion & Nominated after July 15th. Two Year Olds $200,000 Three Year Olds & Up (N-hemisphere-bred) $200,000 Three Year Olds & Up (S- hemisphere-bred) $200,000 The exception comes in with a series of special ‘WIN AND YOU’RE IN’ races, including for South Africa the l’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes. Notes on offspring of two international sires

In The Limelight Frankel

The world’s highest rated racehorse Frankel made headlines again in 2016 through the exploits of his first N-hemisphere crop of 2yo’s, but some perspective is needed.

Frankels four best 2yo’s were all fillies (two of them in Japan). They had ratings of between 108 and 112, so major improvements on this are needed if his progeny are to maintain their sire’s reputation as 3yo’s in classics of 2017 – especially the colts. His best English filly probably was Queen Kindly, out of Gr1 placed Gr2 winner Lady Of The Desert, by Rahy out of a half sister to multiple Gr1 winner and sire Dylan Thomas (by Danehill). Next-best Fair Eva, whose grandam is half sister to Gr1 winner and sire Distant Music, and closely inbred to Nijinsky. Frankel’s first Gr1 winner is Japanese-bred Soul Stirring, whose dam Stacelita was a French & US multiple Gr1 winner, voted Eclipse champion turf female. She’s by Monsun out of a mare by Dashing Blade, both German bred.

#27 is a filly out of Daffodil, by Fastnet Rock. Frankel is by Galileo, a son of Sadler’s Wells, out Kind, a mare by Danehill. Daffodil is by Fastnet Rock, a son of Danehill, out of Roman Empress, a mare by Sadler’s Wells. The yearling filly thus has both Danehill and Sadler’s Wells 3x3. This is a sire-producing female line, found in Mastercraftsman, Capote, Broad Brush and others.

#64 is a colt out of Fly To The Moon, by Holy Roman Emperor, a son of Danehill. Fly To The Moon’s dam Royal Ballerina

is by Sadler’s Wells. The yearling colt has both Danehill and Sadler’s Wells 3x3, in the same way as the filly out of Daffodil. There’s a bit more, because the grandam of Fly To The Moon is by Jim

French. Jim French is Graustark out of Dinner Partner, by Tom Fool out of a Blue Larkspur mare. Compare this to the dam of Danehill, Razyana, who is by His Majesty (full brother to Graustark), out of a mare by Buckpasser (Tom Fool x Blue Larkspur mare). Interestingly, Frankel’s Japanese champion 2yo filly Soul Stirring has as fifth dam the mare Southern Seas, by Jim French, and half sister to the dam of stallion Sagace. As an aside, Jim French is a full brother to the dam of Caesour, whose Gr1 daughter Dane Julia is out of a Danehill mare. The female line of Fly To The Moon goes to a full sister to Argentine champion racehorse Macon (damsire of Seductor who is in Fly To The Moon’s third dam).

#114 is a filly out of Irish-bred Little Fastnet, by Fastnet Rock (Danehill). Little Fastnet’s dam is champion 2yo filly Damson, by Entrepreneur, a son of Sadler’s Wells. That makes for inbreeding to Danehill (3x3) and Sadler’s Wells (3x4) in the yearling filly.

#198 is a filly out of Irish mare Supposing, by Invincible Spirit, a son of Green Desert. Green Desert is by Danzig out of a daughter of the mare Courtly Dee. Supposing’s dam is by Arch, whose dam Aurora is by Danzig out of a daughter of the mare Courtly Dee. Compare this to Frankel’s damsire Danehill, by Danzig (with more commonalities in their female lines). The bottom female line-background is the same as the one of #27 Daffodil.

Rock Of Gibraltar

#136 colt, half brother to 4 winners.

Winner of seven consecutive Gr1 races, which made him world-Horse of the Year in 2002. He’s a son of Danehill, his grandam is half sister to influential sire Riverman (by Never Bend).

Their dam Mystic Mile is a stakes placed daughter of Sadler’s Wells.

#149 colt, half brother to four winners,

Sire of five European Gr1 winners, from 6 furlongs (Society Rock, at Haydock) to a mile and a half (Prince Gibraltar, in Baden-Baden), with ratings from 113 to a high of 123 (for Mount Nelson). He also had Gr1 Eagle Mountain for Mike de Kock in Hong Kong (at 124 his highest rated offspring) and a G1 filly at Keeneland in USA. Let’s look at the European ones. Mount Nelson - Gr1 winner in

France over a mile at 2, and winner of Gr1 Eclipse Stakes as a 4yo in UK. Started stud career as a shuttle stallion (UK and Argentina), stands in Ireland in 2017. His dam Independence is an English Gr2 winner by Selkirk, the next two dams are Yukon Hope (by Forty Niner) and Sahara Forest (by Green Desert; half sister to sire Reference Point who is by Mill Reef). Green Desert and Mill Reef both bring Never Bend.

Society Rock - Gr1 sprinter in UK, who died in 2016 after 2 seasons at stud. His dam High Society was a Listed winning sprinter in Ireland and USA. She is by Key Of Luck (Chief’s Crown by Danzig), a 3-part brother to Anabaa (Danzig), their grandam a daughter of Riverman. Varenar – French Gr1 winner, at stud in India. His dam Visor is dam and grandam of a host of Graded winners in France. Visor is by Mr Prospector, her grandam is half sister to stallion Forty Niner (by Mr Prospector). Prince Gibraltar – multiple Gr1

winner, at 2 (in France) and at 4 (in Germany). Went to stud in France in 2016. His dam, who raced in France and Spain, is by Pennekamp (half brother to Black Minnaloushe) out of a mare by Nureyev. The next dam is inbred 3x3 to Determine (Alibhai).

Samitar – Irish 1000 Guineas

winner, her dam Aileen’s Gift (by Rainbow Quest) out of Joyful (by Green Desert). Third dam Optimistic Lass is by Mr Prospector, and also is 3rd dam of Galileo’s 2016 multiple Gr1 winning daughter Alice Springs.

P AT H F O R K

#43 colt, 3rd foal of Elisium, a daughter of Proclamation (by

King’s Best). Elisium is half sister to Hoity Toity, grandam of Galileo’s 2016 champion daughter Minding. The second dam Hiwaayati is by Shadeed, whose grandam is half sister to the dam of Forty Niner. Elisium’s third dam is a full sister to champion Vaguely Noble. This is the female line also of Lombard, damsire of King’s Best (who is half brother to Galileo’s dam).

#60 colt, first foal of Fire Stone,

by Fastnet Rock (Danehill), which gives inbreeding 2x3 to Danehill with Rock Of Gibraltar. The second dam Dance To The Top is Gr1 placed, by Sadler’s Wells out of Aim For The Top (by Irish River, son of Riverman). The female line goes to the mare Honey Buzzard (dam of stallion Honeyway) to which Fire Stone is inbred.

#83 colt, half brother to 2 winners out of English stakes placed winner Heavenly Bay.

Heavenly Bay is by Rahy out of Bevel, by Mr Prospector, and inbred 2x3 to Raise A Native. The next dam Bev Bev is by Nijinsky out of Native Partner, who is half sister to Jim French.

#123 colt, half brother to winners by Danehill stallions Fastnet Rock, Dansili and Danehill

Dancer. Their dam Magnolia Lane is by Sadler’s Wells and is full sister to champion stayer Yeats, as well as half sister to SA sire Solskjaer (by Danehill) and his Japanese full brother Tsukuba Symphony.

2nd leading Freshman Sire by Stakes wins (2016)

Irish Champion 2yo

Undefeated at 2 yrs including Gr1 & Gr2 Highest Rated 2yo in Ireland 2010 Joint 5th Top Rated 2yo in the world 2010

their dam a Gr3 winner by Kingmambo. The second dam is an Italian Gr2 placed daughter of Storm Cat and champion 2yo & 3yo filly Mrs Penny, from the family of Hatoof and Irish Prize (by Riverman’s son Irish River). Mrs Penny is by Great Nephew (Honeyway).

#153 half sister to two multiple winners in Hungary (by Danehill

stallion Oratorio) and Spain, their dam Prayers For Rain a 3-time winner by Darshaan. The grandam is half sister to a Mill Reef mare with three stakes winners by Danehill.

#165 filly, first foal of Rehanaat, a

mare by Daaher (Awesome Again). The second dam Sultana has produced two stakes winners. She is by Storm Cat out of French Gr1 winner Sierra Madre (her sire Baillamont is by Blushing Groom out of a sister to Liloy).

#196 filly, first foal of Supernatural, a mare by Danehill Dancer’s son Mastercraftsman.

That makes the filly inbred 2x4 to Danehill. The mare’s dam Quality Love closely resembles the pedigree of stallion Raven’s Pass (both by Elusive Quality from mares with Verbatim (by Speak John). The female line traces to a 3-part sister to stallion Speak John – the mare’s 4th dam is inbred 2x2 to Speak John and the 3-part sister. This links closely to Rock Of Gibraltar’s third dam River Lady.

#230 half brother to 2 winners in UK, Italy and Germany; their dam Amhooj is by Green Desert (Danzig), which makes for inbreeding 3x3 to Danzig in the yearling. Amhooj herself has Green Desert and Shareef Dancer 1x3, the pair closely resembling each other in make-up. The female line is a famous European stallion-producing one, tracing to Horama through her daughter Urshalim and grandaughter Violetta.
