Highlights of JUDPOT’S amazing season

What are the Chances?

Two legs of the Triple Tiara

Pictured is 2yo filly FINAL JUDGEMENT winning the Golden Slipper on Vodacom July-day. The youngster is one of just 16 fillies from Judpot’s small 4th crop. Of the 16, five raced as 2yo’s, three earned black type.

Pictured is 3yo filly JUXTAPOSE, winning the SA Fillies Classic before going on to the take the SA Oaks.

FINAL JUDGEMENT won the Golden Slipper and ran third in the Devon Air S.

She’s the second 3yo Gr1 filly in Judpot’s first three crops, following ALONG CAME POLLY from the stallion’s freshman-crop.

MALEFICIENT won that Devon Air Stakes, and started odds-on favourite for Final Judgement’s Golden Slipper (she ran a close fifth).

Earlier in the season, JUXTAPOSE had placed in the Three Troika’s Stakes and the Fillies Mile.

TIMEDTOPERFECTION finished third in the Godolphin Barb Stakes against the colts.

Five 2yo fillies, 3 stakes horses. What are the chances - or better still: how good can it get? Next season will tell: Judpot does great with 3yo fillies, too.

Ranked with the best of the fillies in her year, JUXTAPOSE has earnings of over R1.4 million.

SA Derby – Oh No!

From Dash to Marathon

Pictured is 3yo ROCKETBALL, who gave Triple Crown winner Abashiri the scare of his life in the SA Derby, final leg of the crown. ROCKETBALL ran second by an official nose, to become Judpot’s second SA Derby runner-up – one year ago 3yo DEPUTY JUD split winner Legal Eagle and third finisher French Navy in the big race. Earlier in the season ROCKETBALL placed in the Sea Cottage Stakes, while DEPUTY JUD showed his versatility with a win in the Gr2 Supreme Cup over 1450m.

ROCKETBALL’S earnings stand at R720.000, DEPUTY JUD over R1.4 million now.

Pictured is 4yo filly LITTLE GENIE, who won two 1000m sprints, the Gardenia Stakes (beating Carry On Alice) and Bauhinia Stakes, to show that Judpot gets black type over all distances. Another daughter DOUBLE WHAMMY won the 1200m Lady’s Pendant, bringing her career earnings to over R600.000. At the other end of the Judpot stamina spectrum is THREE BALLOONS, runner-up in the two-mile Chairmans Cup during the 2016 Cape season, and third in the KZN Derby. He’s carded as reserve for the Gold Cup on the last day of the season.

Whatever next Judpot’s largest crop to date will be 2yo’s next season. They were conceived on the strength of his bunch of 2yo Gr1 winners in his freshman-year. First, though, there’s the grand finale of the 2015-16 season at Greyville on 30 July. FINAL JUDGEMENT in the Thekwini Stakes ROCKETBALL in the Champions Cup THREE BALLOONS as first reserve in the Gold Cup. So much to look forward to!

A study of the careers of South Africa’s top stallions shows a pattern. To get near the top of the national log, a stallion needs to build momentum. Mostly made up of about 4 crops of high-end earners. The tables below show how. The first has the stallion’s position on the national log by season, starting with his very first 2yo’s. The second table has the same numbers in different order, with positions as the crops build momentum.

What every breeder should know about breeding for the future mostly requires a crystal ball. Mostly, but not always.

Apples with Apples Judpot’s third crop are current 3yo’s. It is crystal clear by now that Judpot is going places. Here’s proof. Let’s compare apples with apples, showing what happened with the first 3 crops of the very best sires. First 3 crops – Black type summary Sire

* Remember, Judpot’s first three crops still have a few years to add to the numbers.

Millionaires are rare. The Class of 2010 (year of Judpot’s 1st crop) has less than two dozen, headed by Legislate, Louis The King and Futura. The Class of 2011 has twenty, headed by Legal Eagle, French Navy and Act Of War. The Class of 2012 has thirteen, led by Illuminator (winner of the Million Dollar), Silver Mountain, and Abashiri. JUDPOT is one of only three stallions with Millionaires in these three crops – the other two are Dynasty and Trippi. Here’s the Judpot trifecta: 1st crop Along Came Polly 2nd crop Deputy Jud 3rd crop Juxtapose

R1.6m R1.4m R1.4m

Two fillies and a colt – both sexes. Nothing like raising hopes for the future.

There’s data about young stallions early in their careers which gives good insight to what can be expected. Current studfees and yearling prices often lag behind the expectations – until these come true. Logically, everyone wants to get on – breeders and yearling buyers alike. So here’s the way to stay ahead of the pack.

The Judpot way.

Upgrading The Mares The value of a broodmare and of her future offspring increases dramatically when earlier foals win big. Question is, how much can a sire contribute to the future value? Plenty, apparently. See Judpot’s best so far, with a profile of dams at time of their sale as yearlings.

Forest Indigo - Gr1 winner first foal of Albizia (4 wins, no black type) Along Came Polly - multiple Gr1 winner 4th foal of Perfect Polly (1 win, no black type, no runners) Juxtapose - Gr1 winner first foal of Sunsational (5 wins, 2x Gr3) Deputy Jud - multiple Gr1 placed Gr2 winner 6th foal of Star Deputy (3 wins, SW; 3 runners, 3 winners incl Gr1 WAR HORSE) Rocket Ball - Gr1 2nd 3rd foal of Kite Runner (2 wins, no black type, 1 runner, 1 winner) Mister Cricket - Gr1 2nd 4th foal of Follow On (2 wins, no black type, 2 runners, 2 winners)

What The Butler Saw

When a stallion has decent numbers of foals, evidence emerges about physical traits that are passed on.

Sensible breeders will want to know what it takes to produce a good saleyearling. So let’s cut to the chase. From a physical point of view, Judpot excels with medium size mares who have quality. Judpot gives the bone, and he gives the substance. Although Judpot can produce good-looking first foals, sending small maidens is best avoided. The opposite is also true: very big, coarse mares aren’t his preference.

Family Matters Judpot didn’t come out of the blue, he’s true blue. Silence Before The Storm

Be Aware What’s Coming Judpot’s biggest crop will be 2yo’s in the 2016/17 season, just around the corner. They were conceived on the strength of Judpot’s two 2yo Gr1 winners in his very first crop. Easy to understand why the new crop is three times the size of the one of current 2yo’s. And why expectations are high for the future – on the track and at the yearling sales to come. Crop colts fillies all 2010 33 40 73 2011 37 43 80 2012 28 31 59 2013* 14 16 30 2014 54 41 95 2015 45 33 78 211 204 415 *current 2yo’s

Interesting to see he started off with more fillies than colts, and how it evened out (as nature ensures it will).

You Can’t Beat Value

Evidence points at Judpot being among the best stallions in the land for many years to come. Which will be reflected in his yearlings’ prices to come. For many breeders the cost of production for saleyearlings is becoming a headache. So, at his fee for 2016, Judpot simply has to be the Gr1 value-stallion of the season.
