She held Sergeant Hardy safe in November 2016, then went on to accumulate earnings of over R2.7 million, running 2nd in the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas, Gr1 Paddock Stakes, Gr1 SA Fillies Guineas (pity she had to compete against Bela-Bela). Safe Harbour, a daughter of Elusive Fort bred by Jim Antrobus, rated MR 108.

Siren’s Call went on to win the Gauteng Fillies Guineas, SA Fillies Classic, and ran second in the SA Oaks – missing the Triple Tiara by a whisker. She earned over R2.5 million. The adage goes… you have to spend money to make money, but nobody wants to outlay a fortune with no hope of return. Which is why the CTS track record of sales to earnings says everything about the product we offer: Like the first CTS “Million Dollar” winner, ILLUMINATOR, who was bought for R180 000 and won over R8,4 million in stakes. DUTCH PHILIP who at a cost of R460 000 has won almost R4 million in stakes to date, and COPPER FORCE – purchased for only R70 000 – with stakes winnings of over R2 million so far. The legacy of Cape Thoroughbred Sales is one of outstanding performance from bloodstock and outstanding value. A legacy of titles, of returns, of winners...

April Has Never Been This Hot… It is the month of Love. It also became one of the hottest of the year for breeders when Cape Thoroughbred Sales made the move to combine their CTS March and Emperors Palace Select Sales into a single two-day event. The result of consulting stakeholders and considering the calendar and other factors have seen the rostering of what is hoped will be the right window of opportunity.

The brand new CTS April Yearling Sale at Durbanville starts with an exciting select session at 17h30 on Thursday 12 April and continues on, a hopefully lucky for some, Friday 13 April at 11h00. With breeders already under the whip for some time, there will be hope that the renewed sense of positivity prevailing on the back of the recent changes in our political landscape, will translate to an upturn - and a knock-on boost in the strained micro economy of our sales environment.
JANOOBI wins Zabeel Mile in UAE
Think Positive!
Past CTS graduate Janoobi powered home in the Zabeel Mile at Meydan a few weeks ago. The 4yo Hong Kong Classic Cup winner Singapore Sling cost R225 000 here as a yearling, and has earned over R15 million and counting – chasing Ping Hai Star home in the Hong Kong Derby last month at his latest start. These are some of the stars to pin our dreams on and who knows what magic lies in the pages of the upgraded April Yearling Sale catalogue – which boasts a 33% increase, growing from 257 lots in the March 2017 pages, to 343 in the bulkier 2018 book.
DUTCH PHILIP wins CTS 1200
The key could be the diversity offered in the strength of numbers. From the proven stars Dynasty, Silvano and Trippi, to Redoute’s Choice son Time Thief, who coincidentally celebrated his first Gr1 winner just two weeks ago in Australia, there is a horse for every taste and pocket. There are yearlings by top class international stallions Exchange Rate and Rock Of Gibraltar, while Epsom Derby winner, Camelot is also represented. Sires with their first local crop include champion sprinter Captain Of All, Flower Alley, Kingsbarns, Linngari, Soft Falling Rain, Vercingetorix and Wylie Hall. A quartet of some of the last of the legendary deceased champion Captain Al add to an eclectic mix. All the proven vendors are there - and the graduate honour roll makes for happy reading – especially if you made that winning bid! The likes of 2016 graduate Dutch Philip, winner of the valuable CTS 1200.

Pick of the Bunch from the 2015 Breeders Handbook
CAPTAIN OF ALL
As possibly significant pedigree elements, Breeders Handbook pinpoints what can loosely be termed Lady Juror kin-links (as in Court Martial, Tudor Minstrel, etc), as well as Buckpasser elements (as in Northern Guest, National Assembly, Seattle Slew/Argosy, Dancing Champ, etc), and Hyperion carriers from the best offspring of Captain Of All’s sire Captain Al (notably dam of Fort Wood, grandam of Badger Land). Pick of the Bunch from the 2015 Breeders Handbook
FLOWER ALLEY
A $165.000 Keeneland yearling in 2004, Flower Alley won five races from a mile to 2000m on dirt in USA. He won the G1 Travers S. and ran second in the G1 Breeder’s Cup Classic. He was the second highest rated 3yo in USA, with Timeform 127. At stud he sired G1 Kentucky Derby winner and US Champion 3yo colt I’ll Have Another in his second crop, as well as champion filly My Wandy’s Girl (subsequently sold as broodmare prospect for $700.000). Flower Alley, a son of US Champion Sire and sire-of-sires Distorted Humor, started his South African studcareer at Wilgerbosdri. His 2015 fee was R80.000 (with a published ‘book full’).
Breeders Handbook makes the observation that the dam of Flower Alley, Princess Olivia, is by Lycius whose dam is a daughter of Lyphard. Flower Alley’s fourth dam is a daughter of Goofed, the dam of Lyphard. This gives Princess Olivia a 4x4 double of Goofed, and a possible source of breeding excellence. She is dam of stakes winners in Japan, rated TFR 120/123, who are by Deep Impact, whose dam Wind In Her Hair is a daughter of Alzao, by Lyphard. The pedigree of Wind In Her Hair makes her very close kin to Lyphard’s son Elliodor, whose dam is full sister to Busted, the damsire of Wind In Her Hair. Deep Impact is from the same female line as Right Approach, who has several daughters out of Elliodor mares. The grandam of Distorted Humor, Sweetest Chant, is very close kin to Bold Reason and Never Bend. A large proportion of Distorted Humor’s G1 winners have Sadler’s Wells (as sire of dam, grandam, or damsire). Sadler’s Wells’ line of Bold Reason appears significant in his best offspring. Lalun, the dam of Bold Reason and Never Bend, is a noted La Troienne carrier, and La Troienne is invariably present in multiples in Distorted Humor’s best offspring. This apparent affinity for La Troienne (in Flower Alley present through Sadler’s Wells’ damsire Bold Reason) is emphasised in I’ll Have Another whose dam has a double of Bold Reason’s half brother Never Bend and whose damsire Pleasant Tap is from the La Troienne female line. The close resemblance of performance at stud of Distorted Humor and Trippi makes the latter’s daughters interesting options for Flower Alley. There are five yearlings on offer with notable pedigrees based on the above: #78 half sister to a winner, their dam a half sister to champion Kildonan – the dam is by Right Approach who fits the kin-suggesons (Klawervlei) #95 half sister to 2 winners in UK; grandam Hiwayaa (by Shadeed, the damsire also of Right Approach) and third dam Alathea both kin-link to Flower Alley’s grandam and third dam. Very much the right stuff! (Klawervlei) #97 half brother to seven winners including Gr1 placed Gr2 winner Maybe Yes (by Tiger Ridge); the winning dam is by Model Man (Elliodor), the grandam is by Northern Guest who brings Buckpasser (La T. female line) (Narrow Creek) #103 half sister to 3 winners, out of a winning dam by Fort Wood (Sadler’s Wells) (Dr Ian Heyns) (find all the stallion’s detail on the Sporting Post website - https://www.sportingpost.co.za/ sire/flower-alley/ ) FLOWER ALLEY • The sales story so far for 2018 First Season Sire Galacc Storm 16Juliea 16Diamond Game Hawthorn Adorable Alley Gypsy Woman White Lace Integrity

Pick of the Bunch from the 2015 Breeders Handbook
KINGSBARNS
Unbeaten in 2 starts as a 2yo having won the Gr1 Racing Post Trophy, Kingsbarns was quoted at 8/1 for the next year’s 2000 Guineas and Derby, rated Timeform 120p. Things didn’t work out, as he raced only twice at 3 (with a Gr1 3rd and Timeform rang 121p). Kingsbarns entered stud at Coolmore in Ireland in 2015, having ferlity issues. He was sent to South Africa later that year, where the problem persisted.
The female line focus, according to Breeders Handbook, is on 5th dam Agar’s Plough (Irish Oaks, TFR 122) and 4th dam Mesopotamia (Champion Irish 2yo, TFR 126). Both are closely kinbred, both carry elements making them close kin to notable others. Agar’s Plough is close kin to the mares Special, Darrica and Bride Elect. Two yearlings catch the eye: #238 second foal, half brother to a mulple winner; dam is kinbred through the boom line of Captain Al and the mare’s boom line, both in turn connecon to Agar’s Plough. Good stuff. (Sorrento Stud) #248 filly, first foal of Go Deputy mare. The kin-link is through Agar’s Plough going to Helenita – her sire True Swallow’s grandam Four Poster is half sister to Agar’s Plough, and Helenita is kinbred through Four Poster and her 3rd dam New Dawn. Soft Falling Rain is from the US female line of multiple US Champion sire Smart Strike, prompting Breeders Handbook to suggest that kin-breeding to members of that female line might be beneficial. The latter is by Fort Wood’s son Dynasty, while Strike Smartly has stakes winners from mares by Fort Wood. VERCINGETORIX
A R1.4m yearling in 2011, Vercingetorix raced in SA, Dubai and Hong Kong, winning seven mes from a mile to 2000m. Undefeated in South Africa, he was voted Equus Champion 3yo Colt. Timeform rated him 129 in 2015, the year a sesamoidal ligament injury ended his racing career in Dubai. He remains Silvano’s highest rated son. Vercingetorix started his stud career at Maine Chance, his 2015 fee R40.000.
As possibly significant pedigree elements, Breeders Handbook pinpoints lines which kin-link to Vercingetorix’ 3rd dam Scarteen (by Sweet Song) and 4th dam Noble Vixen (by Royal Pardon). This loosely translates as Lady Juror-clan elements. A second possible angle highlighted is the one of Buckpasser-links. There are ten yearlings on offer with apparent Breeders Handbook kin-breeding highlights: #59 colt, first foal of stakes placed 3-me wiining dam by Captain Al; a variety of kin-links comes from the dam, notably through Lassie Dear, Danehill and the remote boom female line. Interesng pedigree (Klawervlei) #72 colt, third foal of his dam who is by Naonal Emblem, making for a solid kin-link to Vercingetorix’ dam and a 3x3 Naonal Assembly double (Stone Hill Stud) #85 second foal of unraced Galileo mare, who provides a double Buckpasser (one from Danehill, who is close kin to Naonal Assembly) plus a link to the boom female line (Abernant) (Klawervlei) #144 filly, third foal of mare by Captain Al (leading to Buckpasser and female line) (Klawervlei) #146 half sister to a winner, out of unraced Sadler’s Wells mare who provides mulple Lalun and a Buckpasser (Sorrento Stud) #159 second foal, half sister to a winner, out of a mare by Captain Al (leading to Buckpasser and female line) (Birch Bros) #200 colt, first foal of winning Jet Master mare; the grandam is by Northern Guest out of a Secret Prospector mare, giving a double Buckpasser (Connemara Stud) #222 colt, second foal of 3-me winning mare by Naonal Assembly, making for a 3x2 double to that stallion. The grandam is by Touch Gold, who dam is by Buckpasser, making for a double in the yearling’s dam. (Klipdrif Stud) #265 half sister to a winner, out of 3-me winning Captain Al mare whose dam is by Naonal Assembly (making for a 3x3 double to that stallion); there are addional kinlinks with the dam, through Golden Thatch, Royal Pardon. Good stuff (Dr Ian Heyns) #297 half sister to a winner out of 4-me winning mare by Al Mui (gives Buckpasser), the dam from the same female line as Vercingetorix (Scarteen the common ancestor) and very close kin to Vercingetorix’ dam. The grandam is by Naonal Assembly, making for a 3x3 double to that stallion (giving Buckpasser). This is a cracker in kin-breeding language. Not everyone has the knack to spot a diamond in the rough. But for those in the know, CTS has a proven track record for successful pin hookers, many of whom have successfully turned shrewd yearling purchases into valuable ready-to-run graduates. Last year’s top 20 pin hooks at the 2017 CTS Ready to Run Sale raked in profits in excess of R7,4 million for speculators, with the average profit for the top 20 being R380,000. Top pin hook Khopesh (Jackson x Ruby Heart) was a R45,000 purchase at the 2017 CTS Emperor’s Palace Select Yearling Sale who sold at the RTR Sale for R700,000 – a profit of R655,000 within a matter of months. Whether you’re speculating or purchasing with the intention to keep, the 2018 CTS April Yearling Sale promises great value and choice plus, of course, entry to the lucrative CTS incentive races.

WYLIE HALL
An A$205.000 yearling, Wylie Hall won six races from 1400m to 2450m, at three to five. His wins included the Gr1 SA Derby and Gr1 Champion’s Challenge. He was first past the post in the Gr1 Vodacom July, only to be placed second following an objecon. He rated MR 119. Wylie Hall started his stud career at Cheveley Stud, his 2015 fee set at R20.000.
Breeders Handbook suggests that suitable lines for Wylie Hall could include kin-links to the kin-breeding from his sire Redoute’s Choice. This leads to Buckpasser (notably Northern Guest, National Assembly, Lassie Dear), Nijinsky (notably Dancing Champ), Danehill (Caesour, Requiem). Given Wylie Hall’s Australian female line, elements from Marauding combined with the female line could be interesting, leading to Jallad and more generally multiple Hyperion (notably Flower Bowl), Alycidon, Aureole, Donatello. Danzig might count, in the context of National Assembly, Maroof. There are four yearlings on offer who catch the eye given Breeders Handbook’s views. #88 colt, first foal of 2-me winning Encosta de Lago mare who brings two lines of Lalun (Fairy King, Riverman) and one of Aureole (Normandy Stud) #98 half sister to 2 winners; dam, half sister to Tatler, brings lines of Nijinsky (Silvano) and Aurole (Contraband) (Normandy Stud) #201 half sister to a winner, out of winning full sister to Gr1 Guineas winner Solo Traveller, whose dam is by Jallad out of Strawberry Lane. The laer is by Centaine (Vain, Todman, Helios) out of a mare by Whiskey Road (Nijinsky, Flower Bowl). A pedigree full of opportunity in kin-breeding terms. Good stuff. (Summerhill) #258 filly, first foal of Australian-bred mare by Bernardini (AP Indy); the yearling is kinbred through Wylie Hall’s 3rd dam and the mare’s 3rd dam (both by Sovereign Edion), with added Buckpasser from the dam (AP Indy, Try My Best who is same female line as Redoute’s Choice). NORMANDY STUD & OSCAR FOULKES
W
Normandy Stud’s Oscar Foulkes recently completed the personal milestone of a second Cape Epic. The triumph comes weeks after his horse, the home-bred Sergeant Hardy, won the Gr1 Cape Flying Championship on Sun Met day 2018 and Oscar jokingly said Sergeant Hardy was his Cape Epic sponsor.
hile Oscar prefers marathon events and Sergeant Hardy is a sprint specialist, the two have had to do more than simply beat the competition as each has a significant breathing impairment.
You Get The Horse You Need Sergeant Hardy was led through the ring at the 2015 Cape Premier Yearling Sale and knocked down to Oscar’s younger brother. Unusually, he was found to be suffering a paralysed right vocal chord – the condition normally affects the left. Oscar’s impairment came courtesy of his long-running battle with throat cancer and scarring from the numerous operations and treatments. Tragically, they also lost his younger brother in 2015. Offered again on the 2015 Ready To Run Sale, Sergeant Hardy found no takers, so the Foulkes’ bought him back for R70k and Oscar decided to race the horse in partnership with his mother.
Journey Oscar refers to the horse as his ‘laryngeal brother’ and the two have walked an interesting and emotional journey together. If horses don’t know how they’re bred or what they cost, it stands to reason that they probably don’t bother much with how they stack up against their competition. Despite his physical drawback, Sergeant Hardy has flourished in the hands of Snaith Racing, achieving 8 wins and 5 places from 17 career starts for earnings of R 1,823,375 and culiminating in that scintillating Gr1 Cape Flying Championship victory. “It’s wearing your heart on your sleeve, it’s living the brand and somewhere in the middle is me and Sergeant Hardy and mountain biking – but I’ve always believed he had a WFA Gr1 in him. He’s just the most magnificent horse. In everything he does, there’s something special about him – he’s just that kind of horse. If you look at his 2yo form and his early 3yo form, that’s the kind of merit he was showing, he just didn’t have a good Durban season. It was great to have him demonstrate what he was capable of.” Sergeant Hardy also received a tip of the hat from the Longines Worlds Best Racehorse Rankings Panel and was ranked joint 12th in the first edition of the rankings for 2018.
Cape Campaign Asked to talk us through the build up, Oscar comments, “Firstly I think the programme for sprinters over the Cape summer season is a bit cockeyed. He ran in everything this season – he had no choice. On 31 October, he won a 1200m Pinnacle Stakes, then there was a big break to 2 December and the Cape Merchants which is a handicap. For a horse like him, a handicap is exactly the sort of race you want to
try and miss. On 23 December, he won the South Easter Sprint (also a handicap) - and I think he won it pretty impressively. Then it was the Diadem on 13 January, which is a Weight-for-Age plus penalties. It’s the kind of race that suits him, but it’s just 2 weeks before the Cape Flying Championship which is Weight-for-Age. There are only 3 WFA sprints in the country – the Cape Flying Championship, the Computaform Sprint and the Mercury Sprint - so the few horses at the top of the ratings are basically stuffed and then they go and put in a programme where two ideal races are spaced 2 weeks apart!” he exasperates. “He couldn’t go from the Merchants to the Cape Flying without a run, so from 23 December to 27 January he had three runs. The timing really wasn’t ideal.” “Justin and Jono were a little concerned that it was a lot of racing, but it all worked out well in the end and he came through the season with a Gr1 to his name,” he says proudly.
Gr1 Glory Asked what was going through his mind on Met day, Oscar admits, “To be honest, I was working, dealing with crises and putting out all kinds of fires, so I was a bit distracted. It’s a big thing to have a runner in that whole theatre. One thing I can tell you vividly is it had been a stressful few months leading up to that day, but the moment Sergeant Hardy was leading the field, nothing could detract from it. Hymie Maisel always used to quote Rothschild – it’s the moment the owner becomes one with the horse. That moment transcends anything.” “Sergeant Hardy for me is talismanic for so many things. We’ve never been in the position to
have to decide on an offer – I don’t think anyone would be brave enough, even now that he’s proven what he can do – but it would be a very difficult decision. There is so much emotion tied in and one shouldn’t have emotion in this. For an average Joe like me to own a horse worth millions is insane - there is so much risk involved. But it’s an emotion and feeling that you can spend a lot of money and not replace. It probably explains why so many men and women pour millions into chasing that dream – and we’re living that dream. We don’t know where it’s going to go, but for me it’s living the dream and giving rein to it whatever direction it’s going to go.”
Looking ahead
Green, has represented South Africa at the Olympics. She was amazing and to draw a parellel on the experience, Justin gave Sergeant Hardy a massive amount of work to get him as fit as possible and basically Erica did the same to me – she worked me to death!” he says cheerfully. “On Monday I could have got on my bike and done it again.” “Another bit of cross over is on Sunday, we started with climbing from Wellington to Du Toits Kloof Pass and it’s an hour and a half of pain. The day before Justin had sent a video of Sergeant Hardy rolling in the sand at Summerveld. Riding up the hill, I replayed this video in my head. He was so happy, having a roll, looking around, freshing. It took my mind off what I was doing.” “I’ve just received an email from my cycling partner, Piet Viljoen. He crunched some numbers on our performance from last year to this year and it’s interesting - all the big things come down to small gains.”
Oscar cycles with Piet Viljoen as the two man ‘Hoarse Power’ team in pink colours to match Sergeant Hardy’s racing silks. Poignantly, the first three nights of the Cape Epic were spent in the paddocks at Normandy, where Sergeant Hardy was born. “My breathing is still impaired, but it’s not as bad as last year. We were fitter and stronger and every day of Epic was better than the day before. Our coach, Erica

“It’s not dissimilar to the pursuit of breeding and owning race horses. On average, 3% of horses will be stakes winners. One foal in 500 or 0.5% is a Gr1 winner. My mother outperforms that by a very wide margin. If you can do things that skew things in your favour and instead of 3%, you can get that up to 8, 9 or 10%, you’re still going to fail 90% of the time, but you’ll be right three times more than the average.” “One of the strengths of the way my mother runs her operation is that she works with families that produce good individuals. It takes 10 – 15 years to work out which mares are producing the kind of stuff you want to keep in your stud, but you work it out until you end up with a few mares where you’re happy with what they produce on a consistent basis and she gets a high percentage of winners from her mares.”
Sales
For anyone who fancies taking on the odds, Normandy field a 20 strong draft for the CTS April Yearling Sale. “We have quite a few from the first crop of Wylie Hall – both for ourselves and as agent. They’re nice individuals. Someone called them trainers’ horses. Everything is put together nicely and PHILANTHROPIST colt x Happy Jean (Charismatic) they give the impression PHILANTHROPIST colt x Royal Jubilee (Trippi) they will turn into decent PATHFORK colt x Bergfrue (National Emblem) horses. We have a PHILANTHROPIST colt x Centre Court (Sportsworld) couple of Queraris as agent, quite a few PATHFORK colt x Dance With Tigers (Tiger Ridge) Philanthropists and PHILANTHROPIST filly x En Prive (Dupont) Pathforks and all out of PHILANTHROPIST colt x Genteel Approach (Right Approach) really nice mares.” POMODORO colt x Westwardly (Silvano) Asked to name a few WYLIE HALL colt x Costly Romance (Encosta De Lago) highlights, he selects Lot QUERARI filly x Key To Heaven (Elliodor) 98, a filly from the Tatler family who is closely MASTER OF MY FATE filly x Nantucket (Badger's Drift) related to Tahini and Lot WYLIE HALL filly x Noble World (Noble Thatch) 109, the half brother to QUERARI filly x Spanish Vixen (Al Mufti) Crowd Pleaser, who is PATHFORK filly x Tropical Dance (Luhuk) likely to draw attention. WYLIE HALL filly x Cashel Leaf (Bernardini) “Lot 180 is out of Royal Jubilee, a filly we WYLIE HALL colt x Durbanite (Red Ransom) bought for stud. She’s a QUERARI filly x Flowering Peach (Horse Chestnut) daughter of a Gr1 winner (Colonial Girl) and sister to Peggy Jay. She’s a young mare we’re optimistic about.” “Lot 260 (Philanthropist – Centre Court) is from a family founded on a Royal Affair mare my parents bought from Mordaunt Milner called Lese Majesty back in the 80’s. This is not a smart damline like Mother Russia, but has always produced speedy horses and it’s been in the family for the best part of 40 years now. These are not big ticket horses and we have realistic expectations of what they are going to fetch in the ring. While no-one makes money selling a horse for R50k, if you buy a horse at that price and it’s a decent individual, you have half a chance of making your money back.” “If you look at Sergeant Hardy’s catalogue page, by no means was Hard Lady the most glamorous mare covered by Captain Al that year. In fact, she’d probably have been in the lower percentage of his book. She was a 4 time winner and the granddam only produced 2 foals. It’s a family from the Jan de Clerq days – not smart, but plenty of winners that’s eventually going to crack something. Not dissimilar to the families of quite a few we’re selling here!”
Sergeant Hardy is currently settling in at Summerveld getting ready for Champions Season. He will have a prep in APRIL YEARLING SALE DRAFT Durban before heading to Turffontein for a tilt at 9 JACKSON colt x Marry For Money (Hard Up) the Computaform Stakes 80 PATHFORK filly x Carmina (Var) and then be aimed at the 98 WYLIE HALL filly x Family Silver (Silvano) Mercury Sprint.
