Teller Line is a daughter of Roar, whose female line goes to La Troienne. The dam of Teller is inbred to Buckpasser’s dam Busanda, who also goes to La Troienne. Given what we have seen in Tiger Ridge’s best runners, this is a riveting pedigree.

ies, damn lies, and statistics. Massage the numbers a little here and there, and you can prove anything. Some statistics, however, cannot be manipulated. Like this one. Take the current log of South Africa’s leading stallions. Summarise the stud careers to date of the top-seven sires. Cream of the crop. 21 Yearlings at Nationals FORT WOOD Prenup (#94) comes from a French sire-producing family. His grandam is half sister to General (sire of US-sire of sires Lord At War), and also is half sister to the dam of French sire Marchand de Sable (sire of French Gr1 sprinter Marchand d’Or, Timeform 127). Serious stuff. A half sister to the sires, Main Verte, came to South Africa. She’s grandam of Tiza, who won the Gr2 as a 2yo in SA and still races at the highest level in France at age ten. Main Verte also is grandam of the yearling on offer, who is half brother to a 4-time winner. The idea of a colt by sireof-sires Fort Wood from a French Gr1-sire producing family should set a few hearts aflutter. Prenup indeed.

Bluebell Glade (#364) is one of just two yearlings in the National Sale catalogue whose Now that we have your dams were Equus Champions. attention, let’s look to Among the wins scored by the filthe future. ly’s dam Bold Ellinore was the Gr1 (In case you wondered Garden Province Stakes, run at which sire leads the weight-for-age. She won seven above pack, career-wise, races in all, and was three times he’s oh-so cool). Gr1 placed, from 1200m to a mile. That the pedigree make-up of the mare wasn’t fluke is shown by her full brother Emperor Napoleon. Not the luckiest of royals, he ran four Gr1 seconds (including two legs of the Triple Crown). Bold Ellinore’s yearling filly is her second foal.

RIGHT APPROACH Valmont (#388) should turn heads. His dam Clandestine, runner-up in he Natal Oaks, is a full sister to Horse of the Year and successful sire Dynasty. Both are bred at Wilgerbosdrift, as is a third full sibling, Gr1 Gold Cup runner-up (and Gr2 Gold Vase winner) Sequoia. Niebelung (#395) is offered on account of the Wilgerbosdrift grooms, who will be rooting for a big price. The colt is half brother to highlass 2012 3yo Wagner and to two other winners, all of the foals to date for their dam Cosima Liszt.

The bloodlines of Horse of the Year & successful sire Dynasty, bred at Wilgerbosdrift, are well represented. Dynasty’s classic placed full sister Clandestine has a yearling colt (#388) by Right Approach, while Trippi sired a filly from the family (#206). Eden Estuary (#444) comes from a strong, emerging female line. The yearling filly is the first foal of her dam, who is full sister to Equus Champion 2yo & sire Kildonan, Grandam Cathay Firth is one of three influential mares bred by their dam Caprica Firth. The latter's three daughters are the dams of Kildonan, of SA Derby winner Kale, and of Wilgerbosdrift-bred Guineas winner Dunsinane.

SILVANO

Marangrang (#412) is full brother to stakes placed multiple winner Pemberley. Their twotime winning dam is a daughter of Little Strike. This is the potent Let Kiss female line, with Little Strike a full sister to highclass Leopard Strike and Life’s Power, who both stood as stallions, and to Little Kiss, ancestress of Gr1 performers. The yearling colt is the dam’s third foal.

Santa Clarita (#75) is the yearling full sister to 3-time winner Laurel Canyon and half sister to 2-time winner Palos Verdes. The winners are the only two runners to date of their dam Los Angeles, who is a Gr2 placed winner of three races. The yearling’s third dam is a half sister to Horse Chestnut. Pearla Gibson (#310) will have strong appeal to foreign buyers. The yearling’s dam Western Revival is out of a Sadler’s Wells half sister to highly successful English sire Pivotal, while Pivotal’s half sister Resurgence produced Araafa, winner of Irish 2000 Guineas and Gr1 St James Palace Stakes. The yearling filly is half sister to 4-time winner September Moon, their dam’s only runner to date.

TIGER RIDGE Capricorn Ridge (#197) has pedigree that requires some thinking. The yearling colt’s dam Seeking The Wind is a Gr3 placed 5time winner by Jallad. She is half sister to Gr1 placed 5-time winner Divine Nymph, by Al Mufti (who is half brother to the dam of Tiger Ridge). Divine Nymph is dam of Gr1 SA Classic winner Divine Jury, who is by Jallad. Put all this together and the yearling colt becomes a very close relative to Classic winner Divine Jury (who, by the way, is half brother to highclass 3yo Divine Jet). The dam Seeking The Wind has five winners to date, including Gr3 placed 5-time winner Martial Eagle, Aircon, and a full brother to the yearling colt. Siddhartha (#332) belongs in the same camp, as his dam is a 3-time winning half sister to Martial Eagle, and out of Seeking The Wind. The yearling is the dam’s second foal.

Tiger Tops (#261) is half brother to four winners from different sires, notably Gr3 placed 4-time winner ArOnly two yearlings in the catalogue have boreal. The yearling’s Bold Cherry, whose three Gr1 wins included the Garden Province dam Teller Line won a dozen races in the USA. She’s half sister to Stakes. Bold Cherry was voted Champion Older Mare.

Mist, Gr3 winner of nine races, runner-up in the Gr1 Queen’s Plate. He subsequently won a Gr3 in Dubai. A half brother to the pair is Gr2 winning sprinter Shades of Indigo. Their 3-time winning dam Palace Bride is an Australian-bred daughter of English Gr3 placed stakes winner Bridesmaid, whose fourth dam is half sister to influential sire Hyperion.

NOT FOR SALE Belong To You (#359) is Argentine bred, and half sister to 3 winners in SA and USA, all with black type. Locally, the family flag is kept flying by Ugly Betty, three times stakes placed to date. Two other half sisters have been stakes placed in the USA, where their dam Betty Van won three races and was Gr2 placed.

ORPEN Rice (#216) is the second foal of her unraced dam, who was bred in the USA and at stud in Argentina. The grandam, an English stakes winner, is half sister to Gr1 winners and successful sires Desert Wine and Menifee (both runners-up in two legs of the US Triple Crown), as well as three-part sister to Champion European 2yo and sire Fasliyev. Their dam Anne Campbell was voted Champion Broodmare in the USA. Her daughters and granddaughters have followed her example, so the yearling filly on offer must have paddock value if nothing else.

he year is 2002. The first crops bred at Wilgerbosdrift hit the tracks running. First winners of the year are Dunmore West (multiple stakes winner later in her career) and The Daydream (placed in the Fillies Guineas a year later). Then, in June 2002, appears a bay colt called Dynasty. Starting at odds of 1/3 in open company over a mile at Greyville, the 2yo canters home, leaving fourteen older opponents struggling in his wake. It is the shape of things to come, for Dynasty as much as for the fledgling Wilgerbosdrift stud.

Ground Rules

The Wilgerbosdrift-bred Gr1 winners

“Geologically speaking, the area is the horse breeders powerhouse.” So says Tim Miller, best known as owner of Horse of the Year Prince Florimund, from whom he bred the dam of another Horse of the Year, Pocket Power. The MIT-educated geologist made a name mining rubies in Kenya. Thoroughbred breeding is his passion. “In a nutshell it’s like this. Very long ago, the West Coast area consisted of small islands. Those had lots of birds, which deposited droppings – guana. Phosphates. Add to that deposits of calcium carbonate, from seashells, and you have a unique combination. For breeding strong, healthy horses there isn’t anything to beat it.”

Grade & Upgrade Looking back over the decade since Dynasty’s first win, the proof is in the pudding. The stud’s big-race winners include Equus Champion 2yo filly Asylum Seeker and five Gr1 winning colts – Equus Champion Elusive Fort, Equus Champion 2yo Kildonan, Cape Guineas and SA Guineas winner Noordhoek Flyer, SA Guineas winner Heir Apparent (who sadly died after his 3yo career), and Horse of the Year Dynasty, the trail blazer. All four of the surviving colts are now at stud as stallions.

UPGRADING THE BAND: English-bred Gr1 placed Gr3 winner WELWITSCHIA is a daughter of Oasis Dream The key to continued successes is upgrading the mare band. New blood for the Wilgerbosdrift paddocks includes Irish-bred Danehill Dancer daughter Berry Blaze (MR 104), English-bred Oasis Dream mare Welwitschia (MR 105), Equus Champion Mother Russia (MR 111), Jallad mare Zirconeum (MR 107), Irish-bred Montjeu mare Gorongosa (MR 91), UK-bred Shamardal filly Centimes (odds-on winner of her only start last month). Quality counts.

The Million Rand Coup

IGHT APPROACH. Bred by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the magnificent bay colt raced in the royal colours. Following two promising performances as a 2yo, he was heavily supported for the Epsom Derby to give the monarch a first winner of that big race in her Golden Jubilee year. A hairline fracture of vertebrae put paid to those hopes. As a result he missed most of his 3yo season, including the Derby, but made up for lost time subsequently. Here’s the story of Right Approach.

Born in September 2008, from the second crop of Right Approach, Red Barrel was offered as a foal in May 2009 at Marianne Thomson’s dispersal sale. He changed hands at R85k, one of forty foals sold at the sale. More than a year later, Red Barrel went again through the ring at the Ready To Run Sale. This auction was linked to a R2 million race to be held a year later, exclusively for Ready To Run graduates. Red Barrel fetched R350k, twice the sale average. The now 2yo joined the stable of Mike de Kock, to race in the colours of Markus Jooste. A plan was hatched, the aim the big prize of the next year. Following careful preparation, Red Barrel made his racecourse debut only at 3, over 1200m at the Vaal, in October. Slow away in a field of sixteen, he showed his ability to win nicely and secure his place in the Ready To Run Cup a month later. He started favourite, and won. In two starts, the Right Approach colt had earned a shade over R1 million. Mission accomplished.

Take It From Timeform “When the champion jockey says a twice-raced two-year-old could be the best he has ever sat on, the racing world has to sit up and take notice, and, as a result of the publicity given to Her Majesty The Queen's Right Approach, his name will surely be racing silks are the same as those of King George IV appearing in plenty of horses-to-follow lists (…). There’s no doubt that he has enorand King Edward VII. mous potential and he could well come close to living up to Kieren Fallon’s expectations; in Sir Michael Stoute, Right Approach has a trainer who is sure to get the best out of him.” So wrote Timeform in their 2001 Racehorses annual. Right Approach’ 3yo campaign was an anti-climax, especially as he’d been heavily backed for the Derby prior to making his 3yo debut. He ran twice, in the Classic Trial in April and Dante Stakes in May, making no show in the latter. He reportedly fractured a vertebrae, and was given the rest of the year off. As 4yo Right Approach won the Listed Royal Windsor Stakes on seasonal debut, then ran second in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, earning a Timeform rating of 117. He lost form subsequently, and his no doubt disheartened connections sold him at the Tattersalls October Sale for a rather modest 65.000 guineas.

From Queen To King Right Approach proved an inspired buy for his new connections, who put him in the care of Mike de Kock, the King of Dubai racing. Less than four months after he’d changed hands, Right Approach won a Listed race on his Dubai debut. A month later, on World Cup night, he dead-heated in the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free over 1800m at Nad Al Sheba, then finished a 2-length fifth in the QEII Cup in Hong Kong in April. That was that for the season. Right Approach reappeared in Dubai in March of the following year, recording a career-best rating of 121 when narrowly beaten in the Gr2 Jebel Hatta after being slow away. He concluded his racing career with a third in the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free and fourth in the Gr1 Singapore Cup. Right Approach had earned his purchase price several times over in just six starts, racing consistently well, and to his best form. It was time for the next move.

A People’s Stallion Right Approach was presented to the world of South African breeders in 2006, to start his stud career at Wilgerbosdrift. With his utterly classic good looks, a true sire’s pedigree, and his televised achievements abroad still fresh in the collective minds, he predictably proved popular. Standing at an advertised fee of R20.000, Right Approach sired over fifty foals in each of his first three crops. They were registered to over 50 different breeders, out of mares by over 80 different sires. Genetic variety aplenty.

Best Runners The list of best runners for Right Approach, when measured by Merit Rating, is headed appropriately by colts who were the sire’s highest priced lots when sold. If the measure of a sire Gr2 Dingaans runner-up Whiteline Fever (MR 105) is what he can accomplish when compared to other foals from the same mares, then all is Right.

Sale Perspective The first crop of Right Approach hit the auction market in 2009. Buyers and sellers alike were ecstatic. The National Sale saw a R700k colt, the Vintage Sale a R300k filly. The National 2yo Sale had a R200k colt, and even in Natal the R100k barrier was broken, with a filly. All this achieved on a service fee of just R20k. The frenzy continued in 2010. Daytona Stud made headlines with a R700k colt at the regional Cape Sale (almost nine times the sale’s average!). The National Sale followed with R600k and R550k colts. Heads could again be held high in 2011, when a National sale colt achieved R575k, while Natal surprised with a R310k colt (more than six times the sale’s average). If all that was amazing, there was one foal who took the cake. Red Red Barrel - R1 million in 2 starts. Barrel. earnings index rn

Pedigrees of Best Progeny

Put into training as a 2yo, Tiger Ridge injured a cannonbone, serious enough to curtail his racing career. So he was packed off to stud, to follow in the footsteps of his older and successful G1 producing half brothers A.P. Indy, Summer Squal and Honor Grades. Tiger Ridge’s new home was in Florida, traditionally the try-out ground for wellbred stallions without G1 racing careers. He didn’t let the grass grow under his feet, with G2 and stakes winners in his first crops. The title of Florida’s Champion second crop sire came his way. The market took note, Tiger Ridge yearlings selling for up to $650.000. His abilities as a sire now exposed, a successful bid of a cool n-million dollars was made to bring him to South Africa. Soon syndicated, the ten-year-old Tiger Ridge stood ready to take up duties at Wilgerbosdrift in 2006, at a fee of R80.000.

21Yearlings at Nationals

Twenty-one Tiger Ridge yearlings, thirteen of them colts, will be at the National Sale. Three colts are out of Al Mufti mares. In terms of pedigree, there’s an interesting colt out of American mare Teller Line (half sister to Dubai champion Asiatic Boy). Teller Line is by Roar, who is half brother to Eastern Echo (who we know as damsire of Tiger Ridge’s USson Bashert). Roar’s female line goes to La Troienne, and below that the dam of Teller Line is inbred 3x4 to Buckpasser’s dam Busanda. All the aces! Amongst the fillies is a full sister to stakes winning Gr2 SA Oaks runner-up Ilha Grande, out of Horse of the Year Ilha da Vitoria (also dam of 2012 Fillies Guineas runner-up Ilha Bela).
