Editor’s Comments Barbados Property News is first and foremost a property publication and website. This edition is packed with magnificent property. We welcome the new Ocean Grove Development in St Peter with three modern luxury villas in a terrific location. If you are retiring in search of that perfect spot with country breezes, The Estates at St George is for you. Or how about something on the bustling South Coast close to all the lovely restaurants and night spots – Harmony Hall is right in the midst of it. Want to ‘get away from it all’? The Crane is the place! And if golf is your thing and you just want a bit of luxury in glorious surroundings, Royal Westmoreland has it all! Plus many many more. A bit of cliché but there is something for everyone and everyone’s purse on this Pamela Hiles, Editor island. We continue to see visitors flocking in and the cricket has certainly helped! The West Indies and our own Jason Holder made us proud and over 5000 fans were in Kensington Oval to witness the excitement. We look forward to the Test Match in March! Our Prime Minister, the Honourable Mia Amor Mottley has returned to office after a historic 30-0 win once again and Barbados is back to business. The island is buzzing and the economy is picking up. We still have a long way to go and Covid lurks but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Remember we are on line www.barbadospropertynews.com and on social media. A New Pharmacy Vision One Up Pharmacy is a boutique pharmacy, designed to provide a curated and knowledgeable experience to anyone using our services. With this ever-changing and unpredictable pandemic, patients' needs have changed along with it. There is a need for a fresh start and a design for progress, and this is what has driven me to be strategic as the future of Pharmacy is remodelled. I've been a retail pharmacist for close to a decade. I've listened to and sympathized with my patients, not just during this pandemic, but since the start of my career. I love what I do. I go home knowing I've helped people, and this drives me to continue being dedicated to my patients' health and well-being.

selected by trained professionals, with a careful eye to ingredients and manufacturing processes. My vision is to give my patients and everyone who helps them a space they feel comfortable and safe in, a space that feels like magic. From the moment you step through One Up's doors, you're welcomed by a chic, relaxing and calming environment. Our layout is designed to be truly patient centric, optimizing the look and feel of the physical space. The aim is to make sure our patients are not only taken care of physically, but also emotionally. Thanks to my trusted team, we were able to make this vision a reality, “A New Pharmacy Vision”. I look forward to working with you,

This is the foundation and the heart of One Up Pharmacy: my patients. Everything offered is of the highest quality and hand

Ann-Marie Mayhew (R.Ph.) Founder One Up Pharmacy

A Warm Welcome Richard and Patsy Adams left behind dark and damp Belfast, Northern Ireland for some sun, sea and rum punch in Barbados, an island paradise. They are the ‘stampers’. They chatted to BPN about their experience living on the island.

opportunity and use it to our advantage and start a new adventure as a Stamper in Barbados.

How did you hear about the Welcome Stamp initiative and what made you decide to leave it all behind and come on an adventure? We watched a tv documentary in the UK on Channel 4 about people doing it and never thought it would be us, said Richard.. It aired in November 2020 called Escape to Barbados. The series follows British families and individuals, looking for a new adventure on the tropical island of Barbados, as they take on the challenge of relocating in the middle of a pandemic and working remotely from the Caribbean sanctuary. It followed their life-changing journey as they prepare to leave Britain and begin a new life that is unlike anything they have experienced before. We watched it with interest after having holidayed on the island four times and it being a firm favourite destination for us celebrating wedding anniversaries and birthdays. We didn’t watch it thinking it would be us. But as we got into 2021, I was still working from home Patsy was on furlough and things were looking very grim in the UK with the lockdowns. Patsy’s company was looking for employees to take redundancies at this very stressful and uncertain time for everyone in Northern Ireland. I decided to approach my employers regarding whether this would be a viable option for me expecting to be turned down. Luckily for us my employers accepted my managers business case. I have had lung conditions in the past, they thought I would be safer abroad with the pandemic instead of working from home in the cold and wet winter. Patsy as the months drew on, decided to take redundancy and we decided to apply for the welcome stamp and take this

What was your first impression? We had previously holidayed on the island four times since 2012 and returned each time loving it. Our first impression was “wow look at this place”! It is paradise! The people are so friendly. We hired cars out on each trip and discovered the different parts of the island and its diversity. We loved going on the catamaran trips, swimming with turtles. Patsy loved the shopping. I took an opportunity to play golf. In 2018 Patsy took part in the Barbados marathon weekend which was one of the best experiences of her life.

28

How easy was it for you to commit to and make the move? It was easy for us to commit regarding our house as we could easily get it rented out. But our dog Lucy was 13 years old and Patsy’s mum 85 so that was probably the hardest decision, leaving them behind.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve both had to adjust to? I think the heat when we arrived in September! It was exceptionally hot for the time of year. We now have become accustomed to that and tend to stay out of the midday sun. Living somewhere in this climate is different to being on holiday as you aren’t squeezing the hours of sunshine in. You know you are here for the year and Patsy, being very fair with pale Irish skin gets burnt very easily. What’s your most favourite thing about living and working here? The people are our favourite thing. It is really like Northern Ireland where in the street or Parks you acknowledge people and say good morning afternoon etc it is super friendly I just love that about Barbados. I love the Bajans pride in their country they are very like Northern Irish people who are also very patriotic and so proud of where they are from. It is like a big family here walking on the boardwalk each

morning you meet the same people and we feel totally safe. Living on Rockley Golf Course has exceeded our expectations beyond our wildest dreams. Everyone has embraced us and truly made this experience phenomenal. We couldn’t love it anymore. We only rented for a month and knew within a week this is where we wanted to live for the duration of our stay. The resort of Rockley Golf and Country Club have a variety of properties for a wide range of budgets with each cluster having its own pool. They have made us feel so welcome it’s like your Bajan home not just a property you are renting. My wife feels it is like awakening into a meditation each day walking with nature- the flowers, the monkeys, the peace over 70 acres. It is very relaxing. The golf course exceeded my expectations immensely in both quality, affordability and layout. There is great camaraderie amongst the members and they welcomed me, having previously never played here before. People know your name it’s like your Bajan family here. Every day is a new adventure and each day we pinch ourselves and we are so grateful to be here on the Welcome Stamp. We thank Barbados for giving us this wonderful opportunity to live in paradise for a year on The Welcome stamp. Of course, also the weather is tremendous and the diversity of all the different foods and the beaches are also phenomenal. The turquoise water is breathtakingly beautiful all around the island - a true paradise. Have you met any locals and joined in any sport? Yes, we have met many locals so many on the boardwalk each sunrise for Patsy and for me, an avid golfer it is a dream come true living on Rockely golf course. I joined many of the groups and golf around 5 days a week here with the locals who live here whether they are here for four months as ‘snowbirds’ or live here permanently. We also tried Pickleball as there are tennis courts on the property which was fun. Unfortunately, due to covid restrictions Patsy hasn’t been able to join the Barbados hiking group but she has her boots and poles ready to go when it returns. Would you recommend the experience to others and why? I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

Barbados has everything - the weather, the people, the lifestyle, the beaches, the history and historic buildings. If you come here to work on the welcome stamp the internet is faster than it is in the UK so it’s perfect from working abroad. It is one of the best decisions we have ever made. I thought we would be homesick but it’s just been an incredible journey so far. The only problem is the months are flying by as time flies when you are having fun. During covid we have felt far safer in Barbados than in the UK as the rules are stricter regarding masks and temperature checks. We got the booster on Miami Beach, where else in the world would this happen? Obviously, you are outside most of the time and the government lets you know what is going on daily with covid figures and statistics something the UK fail to do. They have had no consistency throughout the pandemic. It’s something I think Barbados should be proud of. If you get this opportunity jump grab it with both hands. You won’t regret it, it will be one of the best years of your life. Anyone I have met on the Stamp is exactly the same they love it, and many have signed up to work remotely for a second year and are currently on that second year not wanting to leave.
