The Benefits of Joining the Barbados Estate Agents and Valuers Association (BEAVA) BEAVA is a Professional Members Association whose members aim to provide a consistently high level of professional services to their clients. Clients will know that when they are doing business with a BEAVA member, they can expect to be well informed, and to be practicing a high code of ethics. Should Clients, other Real Estate Agents or Valuers think that there may be any wrongdoing, there is a Disciplinary Committee in place to hear grievances and to take appropriate action. All BEAVA members benefit from the BEAVA By-laws and code of ethics and standards of Practice. Each and every member is interviewed and must have a certain level of Real Estate knowledge. Courses at The Barbados Community College and at the University of West Indies are offered and must be completed before becoming a full member. BEAVA then offers continuing education seminars for all members held every other month which also presents itself as a great

opportunity for members to get to know each other better and build great working relationships. The members on the Real Estate and Valuers Boards and Councils make themselves available to mentor any other member as they each have quite a wealth of knowledge and experience. The Office is open every day with the Administrative Assistant there to answer all queries. Many businesses and people call the Association to ensure that the Agent or Valuer they want to work with is indeed a member of BEAVA. Members are constantly kept up to date with industry news and are also automatically members of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) being invited to their seminars, networking with their members and sharing their news. Lastly, there is a social aspect to BEAVA as members get together after modules and workshops held every other month. BEAVA aims to encourage co-operation, friendships and mutually respectful business relations between Member Agents and Valuers.

Creating magic on a budget! by Pam Hiles When Mark lost his job temporarily due to the Covid shutdown in March/April last year, he and his wife were forced to move. They had to downsize quickly. After frantically looking around at the market, what could suit their smaller budget was a one bedroom cottage on a bigger property. At first glance, it was quite run down but the couple saw the possibilities and set to work. They asked their landlord if they could do some decorating and he was only too happy to give them a free hand. They say that pictures speak a thousand words so we will let you be the judge. With a budget of just under $5000 Bdos dollars, this is the wonderful transformation achieved by this couple. Most of the work was done by themselves, all day and often late into the night. They painted, covered the ugly floors with wooden flooring, hid the windows with modern blinds, applied mirrors in the confined space to create the illusion of a larger room, fake grass to cover the ugly worn steps outside, made a deck out of wooden pallets found at Massy Stores. We at BPN hope that this inspires our readers to see what is possible if you have a good eye and happy to do a little DIY.

FEATURE Half Lemons – Find Recipes with Ingredients you Already Have A Barbadian local and her husband, food-obsessed entrepreneurs, created an iPhone app they say will revolutionize home cooking. The app is called Half Lemons. It serves up recipes using only the ingredients you have at home. Julie and Theo Goodman say they usually cook 4 times per week. But when quarantine orders came to Barbados they found themselves cooking every meal at home. They realized something was broken about the way we cook. “The problem”, Julie says, “is that we spend too much time searching for good recipes. Recipes don’t account for the ingredients we have on hand. So we find ourselves missing key items, making funky substitutions, or even a trip to the store. The process is broken.”

“The more people we talked to about this, the more we heard the same stories” Theo adds “People cooking the same meals from one week to the next, rotating across the staples. Having 15 spices in the spice rack but only using the same 2 or 3. Checking what’s in the fridge to eat… and then checking again 20 minutes later, expecting new food to magically appear.” Half Lemons solves this problem by flipping recipe-search upside down. The old way of finding recipes & shopping for ingredients is outdated. Instead, the app serves up recipes you know you can make using the ingredients you already have on hand. You can even filter by specific ingredients, or omit any that you are allergic to. The app launched in January, and feedback from early adopters has been better than expected. People with dietary restrictions in particular, and those who cook for a family say the app has dramatically simplified their lives. Half Lemons runs on iPhones running iOS 13 or later. It is available for download on the App Store. They plan to launch an Android version later this year.
