REFLECTING PAST AND PRESENT If it’s not broken- don’t fix it! That’s the philosophy of most polo players and supporters because it has worked well. The Polo product has been very successful over two decades and there are good reasons for it. There are excellent polo tournaments with fast and competitive action, social conviviality, attractive overseas players, solid sponsorship, lovely clubhouse settings and plenty of spectators.

Many other sporting venues would love to enjoy this successful environment. It is steeped in over 130 years of tradition, albeit from modest origins. Yesteryear’s polo is a far cry from modern Barbados polo. Polo has a proud tradition in Barbados sport. Cavalry horsemen in the mid 1880s introduced the game at the Garrison, but within a short time the local plantocracy were sharing with sporting duels. However, in 1905 the British army returned to England leaving local planters to continue, albeit with a hug vacuum. The dashing cavalrymen were a bigger attraction in comparison. Polo developed as a minority sport simply because the horse owners were few in numbers and only grew in the last 20 years. Ironically, when a new breed of affluent businessmen entered polo it was still a minority sport in comparison to cricket and watersports. Horses meant ownership and consequently participation. In the 1960s the Kidd family kindly provided a new home for Polo at Holder’s. It has remained the home of polo since. The club committee is responsible for the administration of the membership and the affiliation with the Hurlingham Club, the parent body in England. The Polo Club is organized much the same way as other Barbados sporting governing bodies with a President, Club Captain and the other officers including a committee. Wayne Archer and Richard Deane hold the principals offices. The past 20 years marked a new era. New fields were developed post-Millennium at Clifton, Lion Castle and Apes Hill. Two other fields were subsequently made by private individuals for local chukkas with friends and private events. Clifton and Lion Castle later withdrew from the International season, but both clubs should be credited for their enterprise to promote polo.

Holder’s Hill and Apes Hill remain vibrant and both are progressive, working together to avoid fixture conflict to ensure the season is well planned. The highlight is the International Season from January until May. Large crowds attend on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. On Sundays pomp and ceremony often accompanies the polo with an introduction to the players, a special celebrity to meet the teams, Regimental bands, commentary, prayers, food and champagne, presentation of awards, party and music. One of the most popular additions over the past 15 years has been the inclusion of the Ladies Polo, featuring the coveted Battle of the Sexes for bragging rights. No quarter is spared in healthy competition, as many of the Ladies are overseas professionals and good competitors. The Ladies now boast eight locals, which is quite an achievement in modern times. The local male players, home and ex-pats number 25-30. Apes Hill has also been innovative with night polo under floodlights, combining sport and nightlife in a unique way to boost the social ambiance. The horses are now mostly polo-trained pedigree, although in the past two decades ponies were often imported from overseas, mainly Argentina. The link with Argentina has a special significance, as everyone acknowledges it’s the Mecca of polo in international sport with the most amazing polo ponies. Visiting clubs have been welcomed for many years. For over 30-40 years the Villages in Florida and the Cheshire Club in England have been worthy opponents. In return, the local members often travel overseas. In recent times the overseas visitors are growing in numbers combining polo, camaraderie, hospitality, sand, sea and sunshine. It’s a great package! Large sponsorships and patrons help to boost this wonderful sport.

A GREAT Season planned Polo continues to thrive as we move into the 2017 season! President of the Barbados Polo Club, Wayne Archer is confident that with the varied and exciting line up planned, crowds will continue to come to see this magnificent sport live.

‘We have a great line up this season including the Ladies, The return of the Villages, Cheshire, a young teenage team from South Africa and the Jamaicans. It will be a series of super polo and even better après Polo! “ said Wayne. Over the last few years, new innovations have evolved in the Polo scene including night polo and after attractions such as serving Sushi etc. Plans are in place for a number of exciting after events for the season which will be revealed as each tour evolves.

More and more we are being approached about such events. We had an event for the Food and Rum Festival in association with the BTMI which was also innovative and trendy. They are obviously a good source of revenue for the club and we are happy to do these kinds of special events once it is not hindering our normal polo activities.” Asked about the growth of Polo on the island, Wayne said that it’s a very niche sport.’We are looking at ways to encourage more Juniors as they are the lifeblood of any club. You can look

“We want to bring the party back into Polo. We’ve been quiet for a few years and now’s the time to liven it up a bit, “ said the President, on the Polo scene in general on the island, Wayne is extremely positive. “Everyone is working well together to promote the sport. We have two main fields in action this season - Holders and Apes Hill and we are making sure that nothing clashes and we get the most out of the season for the two venues.” Polo is also becoming very popular as a ‘private event’ which is an area that Wayne predicts has good growth potential“Last year we were hired by a private company to have a night polo event at Holders. We only used half the field which made it easier to follow the action and Marquees were set up for the client’s guests etc. The evening was extremely successful.

at the club and see that many of the present players are the sons and daughters of past players. At the moment we don’t have as many Juniors as we would like coming along but we are looking at models like the one they have in Jamaica for their juniors and hoping to generate some more interest. What we have done is brought some of the young blood onto the committee - Marc Atwell and Adam Deane - both in their twenties and polo players - they come with a fresh perspective and we welcome their ideas and enthusiasm.” With regard to ladies polo - Wayne was very positive - “We have one new lady member who is very keen; Poppy, and we have about 8 ladies in total who play which is terrific. I’m all for it!” What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in Barbados! Very few places in the world can you get as close to the action. Wayne and his committee will welcome you and Polo Barbados can assure you that it will be an afternoon of action, fun and excitement so don’t miss it.

Cheshire Team Takes Tops in 2016 Tour BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

After being whitewashed in the 2015 series, Cheshire were able to bounce back and take the title in the 2016 edition of the UNNA/ICBL Cheshire Polo Tour. The visiting side were able to hoist aloft the Mickey Hutchinson trophy following the final at the Holders ground on March 6th, winning three of the the four games played. Cheshire opened the series earlier in the week with a win before allowing the hometown boys to draw level in a highscoring game. Winning by the slimmest of margins on Day 3 of the series gave the visitors just the edge they needed to take the title home, and when they met up in the final there was a similar result as Cheshire won by just half a point. With Cheshire beginning with a leg-up off a half-point due to an inferior player handicap, they began with a short-lived lead as the hosts ended first chukka with two goals. Adam Deane, who sports a handicap of three, scored both to put Barbados ahead. However, the visitors pulled one back before the chukka ended through the talents of Cheshire's four-goal professional, Tarquin Southwell. At the top of the second, Cheshire took the lead as the young James Fewster put his first goal for the evening through the north-end uprights. Once again, Barbados moved to the front as Deane hit at the same end. Ensuring that his team would go into the half-time break ahead, Fewster made a reach for a beautiful goal to close out the second half.

More than half of the third chukka went without any goals, but Southwell rounded out his brace with a 30-yard penalty with just under three minutes left in the period. Just a few seconds after, Fewster brought up his hat-trick with a lovely shot at the north end. With the first horn in the third chukka gone and the seconds dropping off, Oliver Taylor got on the cards with an under-neck shot at the south-end uprights. Trailing by three and a half and not scoring since the second chukka, Barbados needed to get back into the game, and Jamie Dickson began the fight-back by running from the middle of the field after a slip up by Southwell left the ball wide open for the taking. He made it all the way to the south end despite Southwell giving chase the entire way. With two minutes left in the game, Deane brought Barbados up to five goals. However, exchanges in the field saw the rest of the time proving unproductive for the hosts. On the horn, Dickson's never-say-die attitude paid off as his lovely, long shot from the right rolled through the uprights see the game end, six to six and a half.

JAMAICA

returns BY LESLEY FONG-YEE

For the first time in many years Jamaica and Barbados exchanged teams in 2016. The young Jamaican team of teenager Luke Clarke, Rachel Clarke, now Jamaica’s Captain of Polo, and Jonathan Dougall accompanied veteran Lesley Fong-Yee for a low key visit in May.

T

richard gooding

hey arrived very late on Wednesday, May 11th to stay in the lovely apartments beside the Cole’s home at Lion Castle. Thursday morning they unpacked, toured around a bit then headed for their first match at Holders against Josh Archer, Phillip Atwell, Mark Atwell and Roddy Davis. Although very well mounted the Jamaican’s came out sluggishly and were properly trounced as young Archer went on a scoring spree and Davis locked down the back door properly. As usual the visitors excelled in the 5th chukka in the Club House, starting with the after polo ‘boat race’ and closing down the bar before stopping by their usual eatery (Chefette) on their way home. The next day they had lunch at Apes Hill and toured the fabulous new Club House under construction with Linda and Stephen Williams. In the evening the Davis family hosted them for a sumptuous dinner at their home along with several friends and fellow polo players. On Saturday the Jamaicans returned their trouncing to their Bajan hosts in one of those games where everything went perfectly for the visitors but not so much for the local team of Camilla Williams, Oliver Williams, Stewart Gill and Alex Cole, who pulled his riding muscle and had to be replaced by Wayne Archer. Once again the Jamaicans fully enjoyed the après-polo as the boys headed off to a bachelor party and the girls ended up at Kent Cole’s dining table … Guess who got to bed at one am! After a lovely lunch at the Yacht Club with the Coles the Jamaicans headed to Apes Hill for their last game of the tour against Linda Williams, Stephen Williams, Richard Gooding and Roddy Davis. Once again they were superbly mounted each person that played in the series lent the horses that they had ridden to the visitors and it was a close, exciting game.

POLOBARBADOS luke clarke

By their final game, at Kingston Polo Club on Sunday, the BAJANS had found their stride and rolled over the local team... However, the visitors made a couple of errors, perhaps having over done the après-polo, which their hosts capitalized on to win the match and the series. Another enjoyable evening was spent in the Club House before a final stop at Chefette. The Bajan team of Roddy Davis, Phillip Atwell, Teddy Williams and Richard Gooding completed the exchange arriving in Jamaica on Wednesday, June 15th. The group met up with several of the Jamaican players at the new entertainment complex 100 in Kingston for dinner and then a visit to the open air bar upstairs. Davis was unable to arrive in time for the first match so the visitors borrowed Adam Epstein, similar in stature and play, to complete their team and took on the local team of Paul Lalor, Jonathan Dougall, Mark Chin and Charlie Chambers at Kingston Polo Club. It was a close fun match that the Bajans managed to win by a goal. Everyone stayed for dinner in the Club House and possibly one beverage more than necessary. All sorts of sightseeing plans had been made for the next day that didn’t quite happen but after a big Chinese lunch the visitors toured Dougall’s factory. On Saturday the team headed to play against the St. Ann team at Drax Hall, but when they heard that it was the first time the Club was playing polo in several weeks because of rain they offered to split up so that all the Club members could play, including several of the teenagers. Two very enjoyable matches were played with a Bajan on each team and all the matches ended with just a goal difference in the score. The Club hosted everyone for dinner and the standard beverages before the visitors headed back to Kingston. By their final game, at Kingston Polo Club on Sunday, the Bajans had found their stride and rolled over the local team of Luke Clarke, Paul Lalor, Marc Melville and Mitta Rousseau. However, it was good, open polo enjoyed by all. The last ‘boat race’ of the series was held and Teddy Williams “pony” was adjudged Best Playing Pony. Once again everyone was fed and watered in the Club House before heading home. Both the Bajans and Jamaicans enjoyed the low-key aspect of the tours and look forward to continuing the exchange in 2017. luke clarke

t was a goal from the mallet of Christian Chaves in the dying seconds of the final chukka that tipped the scales in the favour of Consumers Guarantee Insurance (CGI) to see them take home the 2016 Archer's Hall Barbados Open Polo Tournament.

CGI picked up ther second title for the season by slipping past Team Rubis in the tournament final at the Holders ground after two weeks of games. After beating out the Apes Hill teams in the semifnals, CGI and Rubis went into the final in fine form. Rubis, who lost to Mango Bay in the 2015 final, got on the boards first through Oliver Taylor while Chaves opened for CGI to tie things up at the end of the first

CGI brought things level once again in the third chukka with a goal from Matt Evetts. Before long, Danny Atwell put Rubis back ahead with the conversion of a 60-yard penalty. Taylor was a man on fire and he closed out the period with his fourth and final goal for the day when he ran from about half-field with the ball. Failing to finish the play after being stripped of the ball, Taylor was fortunate enough to pick it back up after it was knocked around a bit in front the North end uprights, and he made good on the goal the second time around. Just one minute into the last chukka, CGI started to fight back as team captain, Bruce Bayley pulled one back to bring his team up to four. Chaves made it five right after with a beautiful, long shot off a 60-yard safety at the james fewster takes the ball down the boards

South end. Out on the right, Evetts swung his mallet to send the ball sailing just inside the left pole for a fifth CGI goal. With the teams now equal again, the pressure was on. Three minutes in, CGI were gifted a 60-yard penalty off a bad play at the North end, and Chaves made no mistakes to see his team to six. With just under three minutes left, Rubis were back on even terms when CGI, in turn, gave them a penalty. Atwell hit it home from 30 yards to equalise. As the remainder of the time dropped off the clock and it looked as though the clash would end in a stalemate, good fortune smiled upon Chaves as he got the game-winner for CGI. In the subsidiary final of the tournament, there was an in-house squabble as Apes Hill Polo Club took on Apes Hill Black. Black were the eventual victors, winning seven goals to five. For Black, Jamie Dickson scored a beaver-trick, while James Fewster had a brace and Adam Deane scored once. For Apes Hill, Pablo Crespin scored twice, Nick Pepper scored once and the score board showed two goals for Sir Charles Williams and Richard Deane.

POLOBARBADOS With the visitors holding on to an opportunity to draw the tour level after breaking even in the first game at five goals apiece and narrowly losing to the hosts six-five in the second game, they let it all hang out in the final. However, Barbados held sway for the majority of the clash. Adam Deane put Barbados on the board in the first chukka and he would go on to have a great game, scoring again in the second, only to be followed by Richard Gooding, who gave the home-team a sound three-goal cushion before the half. The third chukka brought up a hat-trick for Deane, however, it also saw Canada closing the gap with two goals. Pablo Falabella put the visitors on first while the Barbados Polo Club President, Wayne Archer, who was on loan for the evening, added the second. The final chukka saw Canada pulling a third back with under two minutes on the clock. The visitors were almost able to force an extra 30 seconds as they came agonisingly close to drawing level when Max Torokvei took a long shot at the south-end goal in the dying seconds of the match. However, the ball rolled just outside the left upright to see the game end at four goals to three.

CGI Ride Off with The AHPC Roger Gooding Memorial BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

I

t was a determined Bruce Bayley that captained Consumers Guarantee Insurance (CGI) to victory when the dust settled at the end of the 2016 ICBL Apes Hill Polo Club Roger Gooding Memorial Polo Tournament.

With a side that included the likes of Roddy Davis and Argentine transplants Christian Chaves and Luis Clerici, CGI were able to ride away with top honours in the one of Apes Hill's first majors of the season. The 6-goal tournament attracted the likes of overseas four-goal professionals Tarquin Southwell, Nick Pepper and Ollie Taylor while names like Nicolas Roberts (3) and 17 year-old James Crossley (-1) helped to make up the close-to 10 teams vying for the title last year. With ICBL looking to defend their 2015 title, they fell just short of their goal as they were beaten out in the February final by CGI. Chaves was in fine form on the day and managed to dictate the pace for his team for the four-two finish, proving he was worth his four-goal handicap as he scored all four of CGI's goals. The physical game saw some fancy stick work from both teams which defended well in the early stages of the game. At the half, only one goal separated the two teams, with the score line reading two-one in CGI's favour. Balls were cleared off the line, plays were broken up just in a nick of time and there were plenty of impressive long shots throughout the game to keep the exchange exciting for the patrons on-hand at the Apes Hill ground. Chaves did not find it easy going throughout the match-up as he had to contend with the constant pressure of the accomplished Teddy Williams. As the game neared its conclusion, there was a moment of suspense as Bayley and ICBL's Marc Atwell toppled from their mounts in the dying seconds of the game. Everyone looked on and waited to see if they were uninjured and both players continued the game much to the delight of the crowd.

APES HILL SUMMER POLO Throughout the summer in the United Kingdom, Apes Hill Polo Club teamed up with the BTMI and Huntington House, competing in some of the best known tournaments, highlighting Barbados in the ranks of UK competitive polo.

Apes Hill/Huntington Team Win The French Ladies Open The Huntington/Apes Hill Club Ladies did themselves very proud this summer. After winning the British Ladies Championships last year, the team of Lucy Taylor, Tamara Fox, Emma Boers and Camilla Williams made it to the finals and fought hard but lost to the Cowdray Vikings this year. The same Huntington/Apes Hill team crossed the channel to Chantilly, France to participate in one of the

biggest polo tournaments, the French Ladies Open. This was a week of some of the best polo with about 400 horses coming in to play both the ladies and the men’s tournaments. Once again Huntington/Apes Hill fought their way to the finals and not only won the Tournament, but also came away with the MVP (Lucy Taylor) and Best Playing Pony (Tamara Fox).

Apes Hill Team Wins Challenge Cup The Apes Hill Team of brothers Luke and Mark Tomlinson, Nicolas Antinori and young Luke Wiles won The Very Prestigious Challenge Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club. This is the oldest cup in the club and was first played for in 1911. Something to be very proud of.

Prestigious Arthur Lucas Tournament Won by Apes Hill Apes Hill Club team of Luke Wiles, Olly Tuthill, Mark Tomlinson and Nico Antinori won The Arthur Lucas Cup at Beaufort Polo Club against Justerini and Brooks. Apes Hill took an early lead in the first chukka, with impressive goals from Mark Tomlinson and Luke Wiles. Justerini and Brooks didn't score until the third and fourth chukkas, making a late comeback, however this wasn't enough to defeat Apes Hill, who won 8 goals to 4.

The Falcon Ladies International Tournament at Knepp Castle Linda Williams teamed up with Georgina and Rebecca Walters and Hazel Jackson to win the Falcon Polo Ladies international tournament at Knepp Castle. 60

THE VOICE OF THE BARBADOS POLO CLUB If you have ever been to Polo in Barbados you would have heard Jonathan Simpson’s banter over the mic. His quick wit and entertaining commentary have entertained crowds for years. Unfortunately before the start of the season Johnathan was diagnosed with Cancer of the Tonsil. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jonathan as he undergoes treatment and wish him a speedy recovery. We look forward to hearing his voice once again at polo keeping us all entertained.

PRIVATE EVENTS During the off season the Barbados Polo Club hosted two very successful private events at the Holders Polo Field. Both of the events were under lights and it was the perfect opportunity for the club to showcase what polo is about, and to introduce the sport to a new audience that would not normally get to experience the game of polo. Besides the polo and a photo opp with the horses there was an abondance of music, dancing, drinks and delicious local cuisine, all making for a very successful evening.

SOCIAL EVENT For a second year running, The Barbados Polo Club hosted the Food and Rum Festival at Holders Polo Field. It was touch and go whether the event would happen due to the amount of rain that fell during November, but the sun finally shone and the afternoon was again a huge success. Patrons were treated to a tuk band on arrival followed by delicious food, cocktails and a fun afternoon of polo. Teams were once again presented with a beautiful trophy locally made by Torchworxx. The trophy was a glass polo player mounted on a mini wooden rum barrel.

BAJANS IN ARGENTINA In November 2016. Husband and wife team of Linda and Stephen Williams took off to Argentina to join Emiliano Blanco at his Polo Estancia "Estancia Don Manuel". Located a mere 40 minutes outside Buenos Aires "EMI" offers an incredible polo experience. Linda and Stephen were lucky to be there during 2 tournaments. The first tournament was the Hurlingham Cup and they teamed up with two Argentine players (6-8goal) as the Apes Hill Club Team against 3 other teams. After battling it out for 2 days with some spectacular polo and great ponies the Apes Hill Club Team won the tournament. It was then onto the Liga 8 Tournament where Captain of the Apes Hill team Stephen Williams along with his team mates reached the final against King Power in an extremely hard fought match only to lose by 1 goal after the 6th chukka.

CONGRATULATIONS Congrats are in order for one of the club’s newest members Poppy Ross on tying the knot to her boyfriend Adam J. Zive. They were married on July 16th, 2016 at the Splendido Hotel in Portofino, Italy. When not in England, Poppy spends the winter months in Barbados playing polo, where she keeps a string of ponies. We wish them all the best and a lifetime of happiness.

POLOBARBADOS

PEOPLE AT POLO

John & Judith Barrington-Carver We are not owners in Barbados but have been coming to Barbados and watching polo at Apes Hill and Holders for many years. Have known Cow Williams even longer as he used to come to polo at Cowdray. These days we rent in Barbados for about three and half months in the winter. We are lucky enough to have travelled and lived all over the world so we know that of all the destinations we love Barbados most. Of all the other Caribbean islands the Bajans are the nicest too and not all islands have polo. The only other comparable places would be Singapore or K L but they are a long haul to get there.

Home for us is in London; Chelsea in fact so we are able to get to Guards, RCBPC and Cowdray for high goal and to other clubs like Ham fairly easily despite the traffic. Barbados is great because the main grounds are only 15 to 20 minutes from where we normally stay on the West Coast. We also like the polo in Barbados because we now know many of the players which makes it more interesting. We also enjoy the visiting teams matches so we can cheer on Barbados! Having been polo fans for a while it has been great to watch the progress of the young Bajan players like Josh Archer and Liz Bayley’s son Jake. It's also good to see ladies' polo is well supported on island with Vicky Gonzales, Christansia Evelyn and the Williams Ladies all playing. Christansia not only plays polo but also does a very good Commentary. The annual Battle of the Sexes is actually one of our favourite tournaments since we know the overseas ladies as well as the locals. The polo is really great to watch as the crowds get very partisan in their support which makes it fun as well! Of the main polo fields, one of our favourite grounds used to be Lion Castle before it sadly "retired", but both Holders

68

and Apes Hill are lovely venues. The only criticism is that it would be good to see a list of “runners and riders” of the teams with their handicaps written on a card at the bar before a match. All the UK clubs do this. We have been asking for years but it seems it's never going to happen. Many island visitors watching polo have never been to polo before, let alone know about the players or where they hail from... John and I have been riding since we were 8 years old and John was introduced to the game in the Navy hence we have been fans of riding and polo for a long time. I have even ridden a camel - they go quite fast! In the UK I have ridden at Sarah Tallent’s amazing Polo Pastures where she provides rehoming for retired polo ponies. In our travels we have watched polo in many countries. Perhaps the most glamorous was in Marrakesh at Patrick Guerand Hermes's private grounds watching from Bedouin tents on gilded chairs! It was a charity event and we ended up explaining the match and rules to the overseas guests as the sound system had broken down. I got to present the prizes and we were invited to stay for lunch with Hermes silk scarves for table cloths. This was followed by the grand spectacle of a "Fantasia" display by mounted Arab warriors.

All we had gone for was to watch a match, so one never knows in life. We used to go every year to Deauville for polo also horse-racing as the track is round the outside of the polo grounds; Just like the old days in Barbados I understand at the Garrison. This year though we went to Sotogrande to see the Gold cup and Argentine stars like the Pieres family and Adolfo Cambiaso - we were told the latter had brought over 140 of his own ponies!! Other places we have been to watch polo include Beach polo in Jersey and at Sandbanks in the UK and in India and Malaysia. John used to write articles for the Polo Times when in Deauville and I have written an article about spectators’ fashion at Guards and Cowdray for the Queen’s and Gold Cup finals. We watch polo at Cowdray and Guards every season in England; and I even did a small bit for a TV camera crew at Guards. Whilst polo in Barbados is something John and I both love we also watch some dressage on island with Mackenzie Manning and show jumping with Zoe and Monique Archer. We have been to the Garrison races several times because we know the Simpsons and the Deanes (both owners and trainers). The Deanes also play polo; Richard and Adam are both great players, then there is Richard’s sister Vicky Gonzalez another Deane who also plays polo. If in the unlikely event we get bored of polo in Barbados, there is always motor racing, horse racing, sailing, water sports, golf, cricket… the list goes on and although we love polo, there is something for everyone here!

GIRLS go all the way in 2016 Battle BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

The title went to the Virgin Atlantic Women again as the combined forces of Sarah Wiseman and Hazel Jackson led the ladies to victory in the final match of the 2016 Diamonds International Battle of the Sexes series. The two seasoned players, who are veterans to the tournament, scored a beaver-trick and a brace respectively to see the ladies coming from behind to storm past the men for a six-four victory at the Holders Polo Field early in February. The rain-affected series saw the Diamonds International Men picking up wins in the first two matches before showers claimed the third. Not willing to go down without a victory to their name, the girls displayed some impressive stick work and teamwork to secure the title in what was easily the most exciting clash of the series. The ladies opened the scoring early in the first chukka, thanks to a penalty scored by Wiseman. The women had the opportunity to double their lead as Jackson battled with Philip Atwell all the way to the goal. Unfortunately, a bad bounce saw her miss the crucial shot to put the ball between the uprights. However, it was the men who led at the end of the first chukka. The score stood at two-one, compliments goals from Alex Cole and Atwell. Cole got the men on the board when he converted a 60-yard penalty with a crackshot which saw the women attempting to deflect the ball by raising their mallets in the air. Immediately afterwards, the men took the lead with Atwell racing to the opposite goal to score just before the final seconds in the chukka dropped off. In the second chukka, it was the women who held sway and Claire Brougham darted away from a scrimmage with the ball towards the goal before feeding Jackson who finished the play. For the next few minutes a midfield battle ensued and it was late in the chukka that Wiseman held her nerve under pressure to put the ladies ahead 3-2.

A beauty of a long, cracking shot from almost the half-way mark by Alex Cole amazingly found its way through the uprights during the third chukka as the men kept the game interesting by levelling the scores. However, before the period ended, the ladies tipped the scales again as the men were unable to deflect a low penalty shot from Wiseman. In the final chukka, the ladies increased their lead through some quick thinking from Jackson who was able to make a sharp turn and score from a compromising position. rhys odle

A consolation goal came late in the chukka from Atwell, but it was too little, too late and the Virgin Atlantic Women were able to lift the championship trophy. claire tries some different horse power

A GUIDE TO BARBADOS POLO … A chukka is a game between eight players … You score a goal hitting between the posts as high as you want … A player can change mounts at any time … The numbers on your back is the position you are playing … The third umpire in the stand decides if the two Umpires on the field disagree … A goal gets a point … Sometimes you get a half point or more if the other team has a higher handicap … You can’t play behind the boards … You can strike the ball with a mallet but not another player … Each Chukka lasts for 7 minutes but an extra 30 seconds may be played to win a game … Barbados plays 4 chukkas … The best players are the players with a higher handicap … High Goal players are expected to score … A Low Handicap player is normally a beginner … Players face opposite on one side and then switch after another goal is scored … Free hits are given to fouls … Some goals are awarded for very bad fouls … The Ladies and the Men play as equals when playing against each other

AHPC Inaugural International Ladies Tournament BY CAMILLA WILLIAMS

88

This year we saw the Inaugural Ladies Tournament at Apes Hill Club. The Apes Hill Ladies International spanned over a week in April, with 16 women taking the field to battle it out. This was the first time in Barbados a tournament has been dedicated entirely to the female players, who are on the increase worldwide. Being that Ladies Polo can be considered calmer and more refined, it is not a surprise that the spectators and polo lovers do enjoy watching these matches. The tournament was played under the new ladies’ handicaps established by the Hurlingham Polo Association, which have been designed to handicap ladies’ players to the level they represent allowing for even competition. This year we saw 4 teams with handicaps between 10-12. Team Massy, Team Foxcote, Team AR Aesthetics and Team Pro Fit. With 11 foreign ladies’ players and 5 local ladies. lucy taylor

Tamara Fox, Lucy Taylor who are two of the top ladies’ players and well known for their success in England through the years and who also continue to play for Apes Hill Polo across the world. Claire Brougham, Lottie Lemmacraft and Sarah Wiseman who are also massively respected and known for their skill and ability to take on the boys on the field which made it all much more exciting to have them join us in Barbados. Team Massy United Insurance who were this year’s winners, put up a great fight throughout the tournament and in the final, beating AR AESTHETICS by 1 goal and also lead the festivities in to the night with one of the polo clubs well known clubhouse parties.

POLOBARBADOS Between the three days of amazing polo the ladies also took in the sights and experiences of Barbados, with a catamaran cruise, swimming with the turtles, Island Tour, shopping, dinners and so much more. It’s not difficult to see why Barbados is the perfect location for Polo, between the activities and hospitality of the club members, our friends across the pond keep coming back. With Polo on the rise worldwide and Ladies Polo taking the world by storm it’s not hard to see why Barbados Polo is a huge supporter and the 2017 Apes Hill Ladies International is already in motion, we will see 6 all ladies’ teams on the field, with a new addition to the local ladies, Zoe Archer, our youngest lady player. The dates for 2017 are March 21st to 26th. We look forward to another year of great polo and another great Ladies International.

“Its becoming much more widely excepted that WOMEN can play polo on a level playing field with the guys...”

96

GIRLPOWER!! SARAH WISEMAN With the recent popularity in Womens Polo, Polo Barbados took the opportunity to interview Sarah Wiseman, one of the top professional female polo players to find out what it truly is like to play a male dominated sport. You are one of the top female Polo professional players in the world - what was the journey like in this male dominated sport? Becoming a professional polo player hasn’t been easy but then again nothing is meant to be easy right?! I have always had the support of my family, mostly my mum who loves polo and has always supported me in my efforts and dreams. I think I have been very lucky along my journey and had the privileged of playing with some great professionals and patrons that have never had a problem with the fact I’m a lady player. They gave me my first runs as a professional, paying me to play as a 0 goaler and from there I really haven’t looked back. There have been times when patrons have selected the guys over me, but now with the International Women’s polo circuit that is growing, us girls really have a lot more paid international opportunities that the guys will never get!

What new developments have happened in Polo to allow ladies to move forward? I think the major changes came about with players like Claire Tomlinson and then Sunny Hale, playing at the top level of polo. They opened the doors for the next generation to step forward. Its becoming much more widely accepted that women can play polo on a level playing field with the guys and more girls are becoming professional not just in Ladies polo but in the mixed game as well. The growth of the Womens' Game is unbelievable. There are now Ladies Tournaments being played all over the world and this I think will help a lot of young lady players to earn the extra income over the off season so that they can make a living out of polo all year around. I think that is the biggest issue, funding your career as a professional player. If you want to be the best, you need to have the

97

POLOBARBADOS sarah at battle of the sexes in barbados

What would you say to some of our young ladies who aspire to being professional polo players? Its not easy, but its not impossible. I was told it wouldn’t be possible, that I was dreaming, and here I am, playing the sport I love as my career! You will never be a millionaire by doing it, but I can safely say I wake up every day and love what I do. I get to travel the world and meet incredible people. There is a lot of hard work and heartache that goes into it behind the scenes and its not all glitz and glamour, its a labour of love and passion. So if thats what drives you then go for it. I honestly believe the sk is the limit in terms of opportunities in polo. What’s in the Future for Sarah Wiseman? capital to invest in horses and thats expensive. If you only get paid 6 months of the year thats impossible, so having opportunities to play around the world and earn an income is incredibly important.

“I can safely say I wake up every day and LOVE what I do.” You travel all over the world now to play polo - what do you think of women’s polo and the polo scene here in Barbados? The standard of Womens Polo is getting better and better and Barbados is no exception. I first came over to play the Battle of The Sexes which is a great concept and proves that girls can take on the boys on a level playing field. Barbados hosted their first Ladies tournament in 2016 and it was a great success with several local lady players taking part and playing exceptionally well. Polo in Barbados is great, and everyone is so kind and welcoming. Its a huge pleasure to come back year after year and play and I hope to keep coming for years to come!

98

I want to keep playing as long as I can, and improving as well! I will be heading off around the world again this year. I think my future will always be in polo in some capacity. I have set up a club in the UK now as well as playing professionally. I still have some polo dreams to chase and I hope that I can make some of them come true. I’ve been so lucky on my journey so far, but I hope I can squeeze a few more successes out of my polo career yet! Do you see Women’s Polo or Mixed Polo growing significantly? Womens Polo is the fastest growing element of the sport. There are more new Women members join polo clubs across the UK than men and I think as we get more exposure globally this will continue to grow. I think Polo is a wonderful sport and I hope to see it grow, with sponsorships and now the growth of online streaming I think the sport has a bright and exciting future. What do you enjoy when not playing Polo? I pretty much play polo all the time! When I’m not playing I’m running the polo club in the UK or sat in an airport or airplane flying off to play polo! I love sport in general, whether watching it or playing it so if I’m not on a horse or thinking about polo, I’m probably watching or playing another sport! Luckily I love travel and food, so I’m pretty much living the dream!!

POLOBARBADOS

A Strong Connection A strong link between polo and horseracing has existed for almost 130 years in Barbados. Racing first took place at the Garrison Savannah even earlier as the Derby was recorded before 1850. Much of the credit has been given to the Royal Engineers who drained the old swamp that we know as the Garrison transforming it into a splendid oval arena when the British military occupied Barbados from 1627 - 1905. The military used it for many purposes including sports. We are indebted to the late historian

Both are held at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society. Another painting by Kathleen C Hawkins circa 1870 showed cricket at the Garrison, although it was first mentioned being played in 1865. There is no doubt the withdrawal of the military was a huge loss to the island in terms of the economy, security and sport. Racing and polo suffered after this exodus. Polo now

trainer robert peirce with his son andrew

Major Michael Hartland for preserving a historical record of this wonderful heritage at the Garrison. The Garrison area contains many military buildings, including the impressive Main Guard, St Ann’s Fort, Charles Fort, Needham’s Point and an intricate series of underground tunnels. All of these are remnants of that strong British historial past can be visited today individually or as part of a guided tour. Polo started circa 1880s and the Barbados Polo Club was formed in 1884. Several old paintings exist in this era and illustrate an impressive scene at the Garrison. In 1846 WS Hedge painted “Race Day at St. Ann’s” resplendent at the Derby. In 1853 WH Freeman painted the Cavalrymen beside the Troops across the Garrison in front of St Ann’s Barrack.

depended on old or rejected racing horses and generally the game declined. During the 1930s it folded for a period until an enthusiastic group resurrected it. But the polo field used was regarded as a poor surface. However, the club was delighted to be offered a new home at Holder’s Hill in 1965 by the Kidd family. The field still required a lot of work, but in due course it became Headquarters. A clubhouse was added and Holder’s Hill was born. Polo and Horse Racing no longer shared the Garrison but the strong links remained. Polo players continued go to the races and in return some of the faithful watched the polo. In recent times polo members are closely involved like Sir Charles Williams, Jonathan Simpson, Richard and Adam Deane and Bruce Bayley.

The Garrison is now an impressive Oval with a visionary Turf Club, grandstand, food and beverage facilities, tote betting and hospitality boxes. The year is spread in three seasons, with racing mainly on Saturdays. The entrance fee is a modest charge. The events are well sponsored and it features the Sandy Lane Gold Cup, Diamonds International Boxing Day at the Races, the Massy United Insurance Derby and the Ansa McAl Racing Festival among others. The Sandy Lane Gold Cup is staged on the first Saturday in March and the Derby is normally held in early August. The Sandy Lane Gold Cup is full of pomp and ceremony with a lively parade and big crowds inside and outside the track. Television coverage is beamed throughout the world. Last year was another packed occasion with a thrilling finale. Ten runners contested the classic with a total purse of BDS$ 214,000. The race is run at 1800m. American owner Ken Ramsey was backed as favourite with Watchyourownbobber. The defender Sayler’s Creek was also a strong contender, but when they hit the final furlong jockey Jalon Samuel on Dorsett steered home with 3 lengths to spare. Watchyourownbobber finished second with War Envoy and Sayler’s Creek close. The owner was Steven and Allan Madoo with local trainer Robert Peirce. The 2016 Massy United Insurance Derby proved a double edge for trainer Victor Cheeseman. Attempting to win in three successive seasons with Poetry in Motion the champion finished only 5th. However, Victor still won on Northern Star

with his stable-mate. Victor was also joint owner with Mervyn Rollins . It’s hard to beat the excitement and fun or a good day at Races or Polo. Both sports are very accessible in Barbados and great value for money!

POLOBARBADOS

POLO LINGO Coming new into polo you could be forgiven for not understanding some of the common expressions used in the game. Here are a few definitions that will help the Rookie to understand ‘polo speak.’

Ride off

Umpires

This happens when a player leans against the opponent and veers them away from the ball instead of chasing it. It’s legal, but it always looks unsporting.

The two ‘mounted police’ in black and white, who amble slowly behind the play. In addition the Referee or third man is polo’s answer to the TV referee. He sits in the stand and only adjudicates when the two umpires disagree.

Hook This happens when a player uses his mallet from behind to hook or stop another player hitting the ball. It is a skilful manoeuvre and must not be done in a robust or unsafe manner. However, many spectators feel it is unfair!

Penalty Hit A free hit after an infringement. The distance is determined by the severity of the foul.

Near-side

Chukka

Left side of the pony.

Is a period of play, usually seven minutes with an additional 30 seconds after the sounding of the bell. Most matches are 4-8 chukkas.

Off-side

Mallet That’s the long stick the players use to hit the ball.

Out of Bounds Happens when the ball is hit over the boards and the play is then re-started with a ‘Throw-in’. The Throw-in is also used to start a match or re-start after a goal has been scored. In these situations it takes place in the centre of the field.

Right side of the pony. All players must play right-handed.

Line of Ball This is the most misunderstood and abused rule. Basically it is the imaginary line the ball is moving on and an opponent should not cross it if a player is following that line and has the right of way. But, it is open to interpretation and quite often, disagreement.

Back Shot A strike in the opposite direction in which a player is moving. It is usually performed when a player is racing back to defend and plays a reverse shot to switch the ball back upfield.

Meet the ATWELLS You would be hard pushed to find a frequent Polo spectator in Barbados who had not heard of at least one of the Atwell men! Over the years this talented and gutsy polo playing family has contributed significantly to the game in Barbados.

Philip Atwell, the father of Craig, Danny and Marc, credits his relationship with Sir Charles Williams as starting the polo bug in his family. “I worked with Sir Charles and it evolved from there,” says Philip, “ The boys all grew up helping in the stables, coming home from school and exercising the horses.” Danny remembers working with their polo ponies and being paid $5 each to exercise Kent Cole’s ponies. From riding as boys and following Dad Philip, Craig, Danny and Marc all grew up riding, stick and balling and slowly gaining the skills that would see them become very competent players in years to come. Danny and Craig had some formal training at the Congo Road facility with Roberta Foster. Danny also went to Cheshire when he was 18 at the invitation of Howard Taylor

and played there for two seasons gaining a lot of experience, he then went to play in Ireland for a season with Bryan Lyham. The editors of Polo Barbados even met Danny in Phoenix Park Dublin for an interview for the very first edition of Polo Barbados, which featured this talented player on the cover! Not to be outdone - brother Craig also went to Argentina for six months to hone his skills and stayed with Sonny and Maxine Moore and their two sons Gaston and Max. Some of you might remember the fantastic stick work of Gaston when he played in Barbados, also an extremely talented polo player. There is nothing this family loves more than competitions they love them all - playing long time friends Cheshire and the Villages but the favourite of the boys is the Barbados

POLOBARBADOS danny atwell

In 2009 Marc along with Adam Deane and two Jamaican players represented the YOUNG WEST INDIES against Young England... Open, while Dad Philip prefers the local inter-club matches. “This particular competition has helped to raise the standard of polo on the island, said Danny.”In the early days it was very competitive as you were allowed to bring in as many pros as you liked but the Open now is much more equal in that each team is only allowed one pro. This evens the playing field a bit.” Asked about how Polo has grown over the years, the Atwells are all in agreement that polo has grown tremendously in Barbados going from one field to four, however at the moment there are only two grounds Holders and Apes Hill in operation. The improved grounds have also been a major factor in making Polo better for everyone on the island. Philip recalls how it used to be- “In the early days at Holders, the grass was cut with a simple mower by the barman! - now it’s done with special mowers and the surface is a lot easier to play on. We

isla atwell danny’s daughter

have become used to more professional standard fields now and this encourages better play.” The Atwells are very proud of their home bred horses which they now play in most matches. Their stallion, Baku Boy, a former race horse, is the sire of all their horses, which have made excellent polo playing ponies. When it is out-of-season and the horses are put out into the paddocks they are enjoyed by all especially the grand-daughters, Isla in particular, who loves to go and pet and feed them. This family also loves their travelling polo and over the years have made trips to many countries to represent Barbados and solidify friendships with some clubs that have become legendary in Barbados. In 2009 Marc along with Adam Deane and two Jamaican players represented the Young West Indies against Young England in the UK, unfortunately the boys lost but it was an amazing experience for them and was the only time that the West Indies was represented in polo. The Atwells also believe that Polo has become a sport with a more diverse audience and that’s been a good thing - the last ten years have helped to open up what is in essence a sport seen as being very elitist to the general public. Philip, Danny and young Marc are the future for polo, embracing ladies polo and welcoming the new initiatives by Apes Hill and others to offer Polo Holidays to visitors who want to come to the island to learn the sport. Unfortunately, the downside of the game, is the very real danger involved in playing polo, and it has had it’s toll on Craig and he has had to step out of the game due to a series of injuries. From all accounts this talented player had much to offer and we wish him well as he watches from the sidelines. At the core of it all is the wife and mother Frances Atwell, sister of Mickey Hutchinson, who was also a polo player and would have been extremely proud of his talented nephews. She is the rock that attends all the games, washes all the clothes, organizes her squad and is there cheering them on with a passion easy to see! Where would they be without her? There is a bright future in Barbados with many great Polo playing families - The Williams, the Deane’s, the Archers and the Atwells taking the game forward and ensuring that it continues to grow and prosper!
