Welcome by Adam Craig

Spending last summer in New York State working as a counsellor and sports coach at a sleep away camp really opened my eyes to America and its culture, behaviours and attitudes. This has identified the possibilities and given me the inspiration to research what opportunities the American Collegiate system can provide to continue my studies and compete at the highest level I can in track and field and cross country. These studies for the past 3 years since leaving school involve sports coaching and development and together with 10 training sessions weekly; competing; and part-time employment at weekends and during college holidays require determination, commitment and discipline. Coming from a different country with this background and these skills could support improvement of team performance. Being part of a competitive team and pushing myself as hard as I can for the team as well as encouraging other athletes during races to gain both team and individual places has been developed by joining Edinburgh Athletic Club who have involved me in team track meets in the UK along with the cross country team. I am a very cooperative and considerate person who is willing to perform in an unselfish manner to allow my team mates to achieve their success. This has included running in a 400m relay as a last minute replacement after winning the 1500m. Living in a very rural area and training either in a small group or on my own on many occasions requires considerable self-motivation and organisation e.g. training early before college and then coming home to train again at night and utilizing days off to complete college work. I find I work well with many different types of people and am prepared to listen to and take on their ideas to further my knowledge. I have competed in a variety of distances from 400m up to 1500m on the track; 4km up to 9km on the country; 10km on the road. https://www.facebook.com/adam.craig.969

Reference I have worked with Adam for 2 years and it is hard to describe how enjoyable it is to coach him. He is a really mature and respectful individual who is fun to be around. We discuss where we will go during a six month block of training and when the group train at the track, Adam trains with amazing intensity never questioning the ever increasing demands of planned sessions. He is beneficial to the other athletes he trains beside and has stepped out of intense sessions to “pace make others assisting their development. The easiest way to gain an understanding of Adams approach is that my main function, after planning sessions, is to ensure Adam does not go too fast or do too much. His training appetite is ferocious and his commitment is absolute. Adam has never skipped a planned session and his focus is ever present. This is infectious and rubs off on other athletes he trains with which is a joy to see. What I like about Adam is he will ask about different aspects of training and preparation until he has a total understanding and will often suggest improvements or other options. He is a very quick learner and a sharp individual but with a modest disposition. Adam continues to develop as an athlete and, if he had chosen to have a summer season this year we would have seen him go below 1 minute 55 for 800m and 3 minute 55 for 1500m. In early May 2014 he ran an 800m leg at the National relay championships in 1 minute 56 and it was evident that far more would have been possible had he raced all summer. With going to America to work during the summer we maintained training with tempo runs and interval work on the roads. Adam has an excellent future on both track and country at a range of distances up to 10Km. Over the next 2 years, Adam has the talent to get down to running times in the area of 1 minute 50 over 800m and 3 minutes 40 for 1500m. Adam is an athlete who has had fantastic success locally and it is to his credit that he is easily one of the most popular and liked athletes in the area, by fellow competitors and spectators alike. He is one of the most committed athletes I have worked with in my 30 years of running, he is driven and very competitive yet still retains a balance that shows respect and friendliness to others. He has an enthusiastic and infectious personality, positive outlook and approach and he engenders positivity in others working alongside him. He is a natural team builder and leader however he is also a supportive team player. Adam will be an asset to any training group, team, club or university. He is also a person I would readily employ and he will be a success at whatever course he chooses in life. He understands the value of careful planning backed with extremely hard work. With his outstanding attitude and application combined with an abundance of natural talent and clever approach to solving problems, I have no doubt Adams future will be very bright.
