Growing up in Dubai I was lucky enough to be surrounded by a plethora of flora and fauna in its desert and aquatic ecosystems. Countless documentaries were watched and books read once I had realised that I was extremely interested in anything associated with Biology during my early years of secondary school. By studying Biology and other sciences throughout my time in secondary school, it became obvious to me that I wanted to continue learning about Biology and in particular Zoology after leaving school. I have the ambition to further enhance my biological knowledge by studying it at a degree level and hopefully incorporating it in my future life. My GCSE & IB Diploma results demonstrate my hunger to learn about a wide

range of new subjects and by studying at the school’s boarding house for 4 years shows that I am independent and adaptable, which I believe are important qualities for university life. I also regularly read the Biological Sciences magazine and this has particularly heightened my interest for Biology. I found Volume 13 on ‘The Cycle of Life’ the most interesting as I am more attracted to the field of Natural Sciences and Zoology due to my love of the animal kingdom. The IB Diploma programme also offers a chance for students to present an Extended Essay within the course. My Extended Essay focused on William Golding’s novel The Inheritors and is based on Golding’s portrayal of Neanderthals versus how they are pictured in the modern world, therefore I have researched deeply into the behavioural traits and evolutionary theories around Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. This has tested my writing skills in producing a 4000-word piece, which will prepare me well for the academia that I will face at university. Being brought up in a balance of Indonesian and English culture, this multi-cultural background has enabled me to travel confidently around the world, allowing me to learn about and interact with different cultures. I am also a committed athlete by playing regular football for the school’s 1st XI team. In addition, I also committed myself to Hutton Football Club outside of school. By playing for two teams I have had to juggle training sessions and fixtures resulting in playing football for a minimum of 5 times a

week and this demonstrates my commitment, perseverance as well as time-management. The IB Diploma programme of CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) has also allowed me to create a ‘CAS project’ which led to working in collaboration with The Humanisti Foundation in Jakarta. I was able to plan and conduct English Language lessons in a primary school, built for children who cannot afford an education and is run for free on the outskirts of Jakarta. I also hosted after school football training sessions for boys between the ages of 8-11. This enhanced my understanding of Indonesian culture. It also gave me a large confidence boost as I was teaching 40-50 children at a time. Through a period of a week, I developed organizational skills and pedagogical abilities which sparked an excitement for education which I never knew I had. I was also elected Head of House of the school’s boarding house. This demonstrates my capabilities of becoming a leader as I have to speak to groups of around 50 people, furthermore, I have to ensure that the boarding house is being run smoothly by assisting the House Master. As a hardworking, motivated and dedicated individual I believe I am highly capable of studying Biology at a university level. I always endeavour to give 100% in everything that I do and I am enthusiastic in any new task I am given as I see everything as a valuable opportunity to grow my character. I will apply all these qualities and work incredibly hard to thrive in the high academic environment of a university.
