Q&A with John

What makes you different to other athletes? I joined Team Bath Athletics Club, which is based in the Sports Village at Bath University, at the age of eight. I have trained and competed for my club, county and school ever since. I have a strong work ethic; I’m focused and dedicated to self-improvement. I love to compete and thrive on the team ethos we have at the club. I am passionate about endurance running.

Why do you want to compete in college? I want to further my academic studies when I have completed my high school exams; a good education is vitally important to me. I have a passion for athletics; it is a huge part of my life. I guess I want the best of both worlds and I believe the American collegiate sports pathway is right for me. I want to be part of a successful team, compete against the best and achieve sporting excellence. I know it will be hard to balance study, exams, training and competition but I believe I am equal to that challenge.

What are your college goals? I aim to progress my academic studies and obtain a good degree. I am aware that American undergraduate study is different than in the UK and I believe the more holistic syllabus offered in the USA will better suit my learning style. I hope to major in either a Business or Biology related discipline. I want to develop as an endurance athlete and represent my college at the highest level. My aim is to participate fully in college life and enjoy the experience that a new culture will bring.

What are your life goals? I want to win recognition as a top class endurance athlete and compete at the very highest level; I aspire to represent my college in major competitions and to represent my country. I want to build upon the foundations of a good education and have a successful career in a working environment that is fulfilling. What are your outside interests? I really enjoy listening to music and my taste is wide and varied. I play the piano and have worked through my grading exams (Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) achieving a grade 8 merit. I am a qualified Rugby Union referee; I officiate at schools and club matches. I’ve had some excellent feedback, frequently along the lines of “its great to have a ref who can keep up with play”.
